Amazon.com Review

Dreamweaver UltraDev is an enhanced version of Macromedia'sleading Web-authoring tool. The standout additional feature is dynamiccontent, which is when pages have live links to databases or othertypes of server-side scripting. Most products of this type requireextensive manual coding, but UltraDev has an extensive library ofbuilt-in scripts, called Server Behaviors, that allow even moderatelysophisticated sites to be built with little or no code. Version 4 lookssimilar to its predecessor, but includes important changes that make itmore complete and easier to use.

One of the best new features is the split code and design view, whichlets you edit either the code or the visual design and see changesinstantly echoed between them. There is also built-in security, so youcan create login procedures and password-protected sites. Finally, theLive Objects wizards automatically create page elements to handlecommon tasks, such as a master/detail page set, or forms to insert andupdate records.

UltraDev supports three kinds of server-side scripting: Active ServerPages, JavaServer Pages, and Cold Fusion. Unfortunately, it does notsupport PHP, which is popular on Linux and Unix servers, althoughbecause UltraDev is extensible, there may be some third-party add-ins.The features for the three models are similar but not identical, although in every case there is excellent database support. Its greatstrength is that you can focus on designing your pages and let UltraDevhandle the data access code. You can even display live data at designtime, making it easier to get exactly the right appearance.

Everything in Dreamweaver is also in UltraDev, so this is the idealpackage for Web authors who need to add dynamic content with a minimumof fuss.

About Fireworks 4:

Fireworks is a dedicated Web graphics application. You can create bothvector and bit-map images, optimize them for Web pages, and addnumerous special effects for export direct to HTML.

The starting point is a familiar range of drawing and painting tools, such as shapes, lines, brushes, pens, and selection tools. In thedefault vector mode they create editable, scalable objects, and inbit-map mode they paint pixels. Fireworks supports layers andmasks--virtual overlaid surfaces that you can edit independently, enablingdesigners to achieve a wide range of effects. For example, you can varyopacity and blending to fine-tune the final appearance. Other Fireworkspanels include color, stroke, fill, and effects. There is also alibrary panel where you can store graphic elements for reuse.

A key feature for Web designers is optimization. Fireworks offersmaximum control over the critical tradeoff between quality and size. Atwo-up and four-up view lets you compare the quality of original andoptimized versions, using techniques such as reducing color depth andremoving unused colors. The software offers strong support for GIF,JPEG, and PNG image formats. Fireworks also lets you create animationthat is exported as an animated GIF. It will also generate JavaScriptto produce image rollovers and, in this new version, pop-up menus. There is great support for hotspots and slices, techniques for mappingor dividing an image to support HTML features. Integration withMacromedia's Dreamweaver 4 is better than ever in version 4 ofFireworks. Dreamweaver UltraDev 4/Fireworks Studio combines the twoproducts at a lower price. You can export to Dreamweaver--or launchFireworks directly from Dreamweaver--edit an image, and save it backwith all Fireworks-specific information preserved. --TimAnderson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply THE best web dev combination
DreamWeaver Rocks. Fireworks Rocks. Together they make for a spectacular web design/development combination.

Dreamweaver is packed with features for the beginner through advanced web developer; it's easy and intuitive to use. It may take you a while to learn all the capabilities, but with each successive feature you discover and master, the development process becomes easier and faster.

Fireworks is the best in class web graphics software. It integrates very well with DreamWeaver. Creating animated GIFs is a snap, as is image optimization (file compression), image map creation, and exploring full tables (HTML and all!) for use in DreamWeaver.

You simply cannot go wrong with this package. Photoshop still has its place, but if you focus exclusively on the web and don't need to do exquisite image editing this bundle is all you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome
I've been doing web development since 1996 and, to be honest, I fought tooth and nail against giving up Windows Notepad as my web development tool of choice. Microsoft FrontPage really ruined web development software for me and I pretty much vowed to avoid such applications in the future. Fortunately, my boss insisted that I use Dreamweaver and even sent me off to classes to learn the nuts and bolts. And now I'm hooked.

Dreamweaver is simply awesome and I can't imagine ever going back. Whether your a novice or professional, you'll come to love Dreamweaver's simple interface and ability to tackle otherwise tedious tasks -- such as Cascading Style Sheets, tables, layers -- with ease. Adding Flash, Shockwave or Java is as simple as it can possibly be. I took classes on Dreamweaver, but only because my boss insisted. The software is pretty easy to learn, though those with web development experience will have a fuller understanding (and respect) for the capabilities of the product.

The single most powerful part of Dreamweaver is the use of templates, which allow you to use the same look and feel across multiple pages and have all those pages updated when you make changes to the template. This alone will save you hours!

Another great thing about Dreamweaver is that creates clean HTML. This is something that any developer who has ever had to edit the HTML directly will respect -- especially if you've ever tried to make sense of FrontPage HTML nonsense.

Finally, the FTP application in Dreamweaver is outstanding. It keeps track of every page, graphic, link, etc. in your site and any change to any of them is cascaded through the entire site -- automatically updating links where necessary. With a simple click of a button your site is uploaded to your webserver.

There are so many features I haven't covered, but with the little I have this product is worth the money.

Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4. They have turned this once great web design package into a hybrid cross of something that looks like Netscape/Flash and called it Dreamweaver MX 2004.

I used Dreamweaver MX 2004 for a month, uninstalled it and went back to Dreamweaver 4. It really is that terrible and the work space is terribly cluttered making it very hard to work within.

Bottom Line -- Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 instead if you can find it. Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 is a very good web design package that knocks Dreamweaver MX 2004 for ten. You will simply hate Dreamweaver MX 2004 when you install it on your system. I nearly barfed after a month of using that *new* completely hostile and non-user friendly piece of unstable and slow excuse for a web design software program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review for Dreamweaver 5
-This review is for Dreamweaver 5- I absolutely love this software. I had Adobe Go Live but I never seemed to take to it like I did with Dreamweaver. Once it was installed within a day, I had made several webpages. As I continued to use it I learned more and more intuitively without needing much guidance from the manual. As a user you can create your webpages visually or in code mode, this makes it a great option for anyone no matter what your skill - it can be adjusted to suit your needs. You can learn and develop your webpage skills as much or as little as you like. You do not need to be intimidated by it's high price. You can learn it and the cost is well worth the output. ...
I don't have to look for anything else, I have hit paydirt with this program! If you are using Front Page or any other visual interface for ease, you know that you are trapped into a forced format, get this program and you will understand the freedom of control without fear!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Upgrade
I wanted to upgrade to Photoshop CS and add Acrobat Professional. For the extra money, I decided to go all the way to the Premium Suite. It was a great decision.

As a the owner of a web design and development shop, I have already found uses for InDesign CS and Illustrator CS, programs I never thought I would use.

My favorite part of this program is the file management system. It is easy to use and convenient.

One drawback is the upgrade does not come with documentation. There are web based PDFs, but no books. It is daunting for an old dog like myself to open a new program - particularly one as complex as this one - and start a new project. There is a CD with video lessons that helped, but nothing beats a book in your lap when you are lost.

4-0 out of 5 stars First Look
I haven't had a chance to fully use and review Adobe CS yet, but I am very pleased with some of the improvements I've seen in Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. It's still not as smooth and integrated as Adobe would have you imagine, but for me--a professional graphic designer--the upgrade is well worth it. One caveat: If you buy the Creative Suite, you will NOT receive the printed documentation that you get when you buy the products individually. They do provide PDFs, but I find books much easier to deal with. You do get the printed documentation when you buy standalone Photoshop CS. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Whether you're a big-shot coder or a fledgling newbie, HotMetal Pro 6.0 will help you set up the Web site of your dreams. You don't have to know anything about HTML to start working, but the more you know and learn, the more cool features you can add--and with HotMetal's self-study courses and reference guides, you can achieve any level of mastery you want.

You can begin by attempting some WYSIWIG editing and powerful wizards to customize templates to your liking--or you can dive into the HTML source and tweak each line to perfection. The Asset Manager helps you drag and drop features using JavaScript, DHTML, and other advanced techniques without writing a line of code, and the powerful Site Management tools will help you test and fix your site with ease. Graphics, animations, database information, and streaming media will all fit wherever you want using HotMetal's simple visual architecture.

Additional software tools are included to help you move from the design table to the live site--WS_FTP Pro 6.0, Ulead PhotoImpact SE, browser software, and more. When you've designed and tested your site, push one button to publish it (or just changes) directly to the Web based on your ISP information.

Once you've mastered the wizards, you can move on to the advanced features--but be ready for some heady work. Though the training materials are good, some of the material is just too complicated for the dilettante. Don't let that scare you away from this powerful software, though; anyone can devise a beautiful, professional-looking Web site using HotMetal Pro 6.0.--Rob Lightner ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very, very steep learning curve.
Our company decided to update our web page. The new web page designer insisted that we buy Hotmetal Pro for the staff members who would be updating their own web pages because Word and FrontPage caused the designer problems. So, we bought a bunch. Talk about hard to use. After popping [money] for the programs, we were told that it would cost [money] to run the six staff members through three days of training. Counting lost productivity, we estimate another [money] in possible losses if we try to go for the training. I used to use Hotmetal 1.0 back when it was shareware in 1997. It was considerably easier to use then. We will probably end up shelving the programs and finding something easier to use. The tutorial packaged with the program is little more than an index to the help table of contents. When we tried to import our existing pages, the program crashed. So, I can't really recommend this product unless you have previous experience with a recent version, have the patience and money to learn how to use it, or do this for a living.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you think you don't need to know HTML, you're wrong...
There's no way to create professional looking Web pages without knowing HTML. Period. Let's not call what FrontPage generates "professional looking". Pretty cookie-cutter sites, fine.

If you're a professional Web developer, or an amateur that aspires to make professional-looking sites, no Web development program will help you more than HoTMetaL. The "Tags On" view, the Attribute Inspector and Element List combine to create the fastest Web development environment.

If you're looking to use HoTMetaL on an existing Website, you will likely have some difficulty "migrating" a site with invalid HTML for use in HoTMetaL... HoTMetaL has a built in code validator that will not let you create "invalid" HTML.

That said, there is nothing you can do in a Web browser that you CAN'T achieve with VALID code... so why accept a Web editor that doesn't create valid HTML? It's like a spreadsheet that computes "2+2=5".

Once you've corrected invalid code, it will be perfect and HoTMetaL will never mess it up again. Users of HoTMetaL PRO can't help but learn how to properly code HTML, with all the feedback and instruction guides; HoTMetaL PRO will help talented Web designers make beautiful Websites with Valid code, quickly.

As good as HM6 is, I'd love to see it modernised a bit with a new version 7...

4-0 out of 5 stars HMP Rocks!
I've used the last 2 versions and I thought they were great. I'm giving it a 4 because 1)I haven't tried out 6.0 yet, & 2) SoftQuad seems to have been acquired by Corel, therefore discontinuing the product.

If you're a beginner, don't spend money on software that you think will help you create web pages through osmosis. Then you rate a product badly because of your own "user idiot error". You're better off using any of those free built-in web page editors you get with your AOL web page or Yahoo one.

I was "forced" into updating web pages for my company because the "web person" was too busy to update pages for my department. The only web editor I used before was Microsoft Front Page. I used the WYSIWYG function of HMP to get my web pages updated and in the process learned how to code in HTML. Pretty cool.

I then started transitioning my personal web site from MS Front Page to HMP. What I realized was that some of the pages I had lots of problems with (that were created in MS FrontPage) were due to problems with the MS product. Once I reviewed the source code I realized how much added code MS adds to the page which is nothing short of garbage, which explains why the pages were problematic to begin with. After looking at all the source code, I realized that HMP is definitely a keeper.

Because once you learn it, you'll never need another program again. You can just open up Notepad and start coding your html right there, if you wanted to.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible product
I downloaded the 30 free trial and I'm glad I did because it showed me why I should NOT buy this product! I doesn't recognize comment text like It showed my comments at text in WYSIWYG views. I won't accept
