Amazon.com Review

Dreamweaver UltraDev is an enhanced version of Macromedia'sleading Web-authoring tool. The standout additional feature is dynamiccontent, which is when pages have live links to databases or othertypes of server-side scripting. Most products of this type requireextensive manual coding, but UltraDev has an extensive library ofbuilt-in scripts, called Server Behaviors, that allow even moderatelysophisticated sites to be built with little or no code. Version 4 lookssimilar to its predecessor, but includes important changes that make itmore complete and easier to use.

One of the best new features is the split code and design view, whichlets you edit either the code or the visual design and see changesinstantly echoed between them. There is also built-in security, so youcan create login procedures and password-protected sites. Finally, theLive Objects wizards automatically create page elements to handlecommon tasks, such as a master/detail page set, or forms to insert andupdate records.

UltraDev supports three kinds of server-side scripting: Active ServerPages, JavaServer Pages, and Cold Fusion. Unfortunately, it does notsupport PHP, which is popular on Linux and Unix servers, althoughbecause UltraDev is extensible, there may be some third-party add-ins.The features for the three models are similar but not identical, although in every case there is excellent database support. Its greatstrength is that you can focus on designing your pages and let UltraDevhandle the data access code. You can even display live data at designtime, making it easier to get exactly the right appearance.

Everything in Dreamweaver is also in UltraDev, so this is the idealpackage for Web authors who need to add dynamic content with a minimumof fuss. --Tim Anderson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply THE best web dev combination
DreamWeaver Rocks. Fireworks Rocks. Together they make for a spectacular web design/development combination.

Dreamweaver is packed with features for the beginner through advanced web developer; it's easy and intuitive to use. It may take you a while to learn all the capabilities, but with each successive feature you discover and master, the development process becomes easier and faster.

Fireworks is the best in class web graphics software. It integrates very well with DreamWeaver. Creating animated GIFs is a snap, as is image optimization (file compression), image map creation, and exploring full tables (HTML and all!) for use in DreamWeaver.

You simply cannot go wrong with this package. Photoshop still has its place, but if you focus exclusively on the web and don't need to do exquisite image editing this bundle is all you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome
I've been doing web development since 1996 and, to be honest, I fought tooth and nail against giving up Windows Notepad as my web development tool of choice. Microsoft FrontPage really ruined web development software for me and I pretty much vowed to avoid such applications in the future. Fortunately, my boss insisted that I use Dreamweaver and even sent me off to classes to learn the nuts and bolts. And now I'm hooked.

Dreamweaver is simply awesome and I can't imagine ever going back. Whether your a novice or professional, you'll come to love Dreamweaver's simple interface and ability to tackle otherwise tedious tasks -- such as Cascading Style Sheets, tables, layers -- with ease. Adding Flash, Shockwave or Java is as simple as it can possibly be. I took classes on Dreamweaver, but only because my boss insisted. The software is pretty easy to learn, though those with web development experience will have a fuller understanding (and respect) for the capabilities of the product.

The single most powerful part of Dreamweaver is the use of templates, which allow you to use the same look and feel across multiple pages and have all those pages updated when you make changes to the template. This alone will save you hours!

Another great thing about Dreamweaver is that creates clean HTML. This is something that any developer who has ever had to edit the HTML directly will respect -- especially if you've ever tried to make sense of FrontPage HTML nonsense.

Finally, the FTP application in Dreamweaver is outstanding. It keeps track of every page, graphic, link, etc. in your site and any change to any of them is cascaded through the entire site -- automatically updating links where necessary. With a simple click of a button your site is uploaded to your webserver.

There are so many features I haven't covered, but with the little I have this product is worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stupidly Discontinued!
Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4. They have turned this once great web design package into a hybrid cross of something that looks like Netscape/Flash and called it Dreamweaver MX 2004.

I used Dreamweaver MX 2004 for a month, uninstalled it and went back to Dreamweaver 4. It really is that terrible and the work space is terribly cluttered making it very hard to work within.

Bottom Line -- Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 instead if you can find it. Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 is a very good web design package that knocks Dreamweaver MX 2004 for ten. You will simply hate Dreamweaver MX 2004 when you install it on your system. I nearly barfed after a month of using that *new* completely hostile and non-user friendly piece of unstable and slow excuse for a web design software program.

Get this instead ... if you can find it...

5-0 out of 5 stars Review for Dreamweaver 5
-This review is for Dreamweaver 5- I absolutely love this software. I had Adobe Go Live but I never seemed to take to it like I did with Dreamweaver. Once it was installed within a day, I had made several webpages. As I continued to use it I learned more and more intuitively without needing much guidance from the manual. As a user you can create your webpages visually or in code mode, this makes it a great option for anyone no matter what your skill - it can be adjusted to suit your needs. You can learn and develop your webpage skills as much or as little as you like. You do not need to be intimidated by it's high price. You can learn it and the cost is well worth the output. ...
I don't have to look for anything else, I have hit paydirt with this program! If you are using Front Page or any other visual interface for ease, you know that you are trapped into a forced format, get this program and you will understand the freedom of control without fear!

Amazon.com Review

Adobe's latest revision of its Web publishing application continues tomature into a powerful and sophisticated tool. Packed with new features, AdobeGoLive 5.0 offers enhanced source-code control to help Web teams edit andmaintain large sites; improved linking of Photoshop, Illustrator, and LiveMotionfiles; and a new interface that's designed to increase efficiency.

For designers who like to get under the hood, GoLive 5.0 now featuressimultaneous viewing of HTML source code and a WYSIWYG view of the page itself. Each window is editable, and changes take place immediately in both windows.GoLive also can import native Photoshop, Illustrator, and LiveMotion documents. When you double-click on an element in GoLive, the document is opened in theapplication that created it. After changes are made in the native applicationand the document is saved, the file is automatically updated in GoLive.

Two welcome new features are the History palette for going back in time andundoing a set of actions, and the Alignment palette for accurately lining up anddistributing rows and columns of elements.

If GoLive has a drawback, it's the number of palettes that sprawl across thescreen; a high-resolution monitor or dual-monitor setup goes a long way towardalleviating the crowd factor. Compatibility with Photoshop 6 and Illustrator 9is problematic, but presumably a patch or some new version of GoLive (version5.1?) is imminent; they are, after all, part of the same Adobe family.

Clearly, Adobe's GoLive 5.0 has some stiff competition (namely, Macromedia'sDreamweaver), but GoLive also has some virtues of its own. If you're alreadycomfortable with other Adobe applications, GoLive's learning curve shouldpresent only a small hurdle. The application is stable and deep, and has enoughfeatures to help any site designer build almost any kind of site. --MikeCaputo ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Yet another quality Adobe product
Adobe GoLive is one of the most used applications I own. GoLive's easy table creation, site management, global search & replace, and familiar Adobe interface add up to one outstanding program. Not to mention that GoLive is the only commerically widespread web authoring environment that supports easy SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) integration.

I was a bit frustrated that some of the quirks existant since 4.0 are still there, but the added features make the upgrade worthwhile. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New horizon
The CS series offers a great new horizon for Adobe products on OS X. As a designer at an extremely busy design agency, we have found the CS series to be a huge improvement. InDesign is proving to be the victor in the war with Quark. The massive diversity and ease of use of this program is paramount to cross media integration (print to web). These versions of Photoshop and Illustrator are simply the best. The usability of GoLive needs some tweaking, I much prefer Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX 2004. But all in all, hats off to Adobe!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what you need for both the Web and Print!
Photoshop... Not much needed to be said about it! Not much out there with as much to compare it to.

Illustrator... I simply love this product! It is easy to use and the results port perfectly into the rest of the suite.

InDesign... It takes a little getting use to, but then, it is EXTREMELY easy to use. This one is finally very stable! It is actually fun mixing this with illustrator. The two work extremely well together and produce expectional results! Add a few Photoshop edited graphics to the mix and there is nothing to slow you down!

Version Cue... Haven't used this very much. Nice addition though.

GoLive... If you need an editor and you use Photoshop, This fits in really well.

The one thing that puts this set above all the rest is the integration of PDF across the entire platform and the interoperability between the product.

The down side is that they still need to work on a SINGLE interface. I like the way InDesign's interface works with the tool bars hugging the sides of the screens. I wish they would impliment that across all of the products. Still, in terms of pure functionality, it is really hard to beat this suite! ... Read more

Whether you are a professional Web developer who dreams in XMLor you have just decided to learn HTML to enhance yourrésumé, HomeSite 4.5 is the Web editor for people whowant control over their coding and design environments. Created by Webdevelopers for Web developers, this software lets you work in HTML,DHTML, JavaScript, ASP, CFMC, Perl, VBScript, and more. The latestversion of HomeSite offers increased user productivity, enhancedproject-management tools, extended site-deployment capabilities, andadded support for the latest Web technologies.

Installing HomeSite 4.5 is fairly quick and painless. The applicationis straightforward; however, if you have never used HomeSite before, you may want to poke around the help sections and tutorials just tofamiliarize yourself with the tools. Regardless, HomeSite's intuitive, functional interface and array of code-editing options provide the userwith total layout control and design flexibility.

New features to HomeSite 4.5--such as collapsible code in the mainediting window, virtual folders and source control,, custom and teamdeployment, cascading style sheets, and an image map editor--make thisupgrade relatively essential for serious Web developers and projectmanagers. These new features also continue to set HomeSite apart fromsimple text editors, such as Notepad, or easy to-use visual tools, suchas Microsoft FrontPage. One minor drawback to this new version is thatusers can no longer hide the top resource panel to allow for complete,wide-open viewing of a Web page. In addition, HomeSite is still notcompatible with operating systems such as Mac, Unix, or Linux. However, the increased ability to customize code, optimize your workspace, andcollaborate more efficiently with team members make this a worthwhileupgrade for Web developers.

One final note: HomeSite 4.5 is for people who want control over thecoding process. While certain features do maintain and edit the rawcode, the application will not do the work for you. If your goal is tocreate Web pages quickly and relatively easily, you may want toinvestigate an application such as Dreamweaver or FrontPage. However,if you are serious about learning to code or you are a skilled Web pagedesigner or developer, HomeSite is one of the best editing tools--ifnot the best--available today. --Gisele Toueg

I would like design the websites.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product - beginner or pro
I am a Web Programmer and I use HomeSite every day.The programs' format makes it so easy to use. From the color coded tags to the wizards for just about anything. It even links to Dreamweaver for optional WYSIWYG editing and design. Even as a professional I find that the wizards ,especially the tables and frames, are invaluable. By using the wizard to layout the tables, particularly a fairly complicated layout, I save time and money.Several of the features like auto complete are great for beginners. And when you outgrow some of the help features like auto complete and tag insight, you can go to settingsand turn them off. I especially like the validation and document weight feature. This allows me to check where I might of made a mistake in nesting tags etc. and I can check how long it will take for a page to load so that I don'tcreate pages that take forever to load.

I highly recommend this for any one wanting to code in HTML

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent webpage builder for beginer thru advanced
I started with Homesite as a novice and have learned as I built. Their product keeps getting better. I can build the web page, upload it to my website and make changes to it all from the same page. Verify links, html code for errors and check the time it takes a viewer to load a page at different connection speeds all from the same program. There are tools I have not used yet but I am still learning and Homesite is a program you can grow with. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars If I could give 0 stars I would.
No one running Mac OS X should buy this product until the bugs are worked out.

Some of the more annoying Fireworks MX bugs:

Eyedropper - when selecting a color, selects the inverse of that color, so you have to select the color, then select it again to get the correct color.

Crop - If you set up your canvas to delete objects when cropping and then crop your document, it won't delete objects.

Text - You cannot copy and/or paste text into or out of the program

Those are all I can think of right now... but these are not all the bugs, I run into more and more every day.

DO NOT BUY THIS PROGRAM. It's not worth it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very buggy software, but does the job
Another half-baked update. Macromedia really needs to go back to the drawing board and put out some maintenance updates. On the good side, we have OS X versions of these web design mainstay apps (Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash); on the bad side, they are so buggy that one wonders if OS 9 was really that bad at all. Overall, DW on my G4/733 feels slower than 4.01 did on a G3/333.

For example, the behavior of dragging the panels on the right side is very inconsistant. E.g., when attempting to resize the CSS panel to be longer to show more styles in my file, the cursor often does not turn into the double-headed arrow to indicate dragability; or the cursor disappears completely; dragging sometimes works, but more often doesn't. Or, when in code view, dragging across text to select results in a nasty redraw problem, with the code flashing on and off in rapid succession until you've stopped dragging. It's like the document is having an epilectic seizure.

And why haven't they put in a simple window split function? BBEdit has had this for years. They boast about how bit-chin' their HTML code view is, but jeeze, it leaves a lot to be desired (and no, I don't think switching to BBEdit should be a solution to that; I think Macromedia should do more than a half-baked job on the code editor, and then most of us wouln't need to bother with BBEdit). Additionally, some of the other bugs were extant in version 4.01. Some things in 4.01 were slow as heck (templates). What I'm seeing so far in MX doesn't bode well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too Good To Be Called an "Upgrade..."
MacroMedia has exceeded expectations with Studio MX! The newest items -- DreamWeaver MX, FireWorks MX, and Flash MX -- have been renovated to feature a much more consistent, intuitive user experience, slick graphical interface (at least under Mac OSX), and expanded capabilities and features.

So much has been added in features and experience that to call this a mere 'upgrade' is short changing the work done here. DW features all of the features from UltraDev, plus support for the free PHP, demonstrating their renewed confidence in the power of ColdFusion (dev version included w/Windows version of Studio MX), not to mention added support for ASP.NET. Those who loved Allaire's HomeSite will appreciate its integreation into the DW interface itself.

FireWorks is a beautiful application that makes PhotoShop pros feel more at home without feeling like they're using a 2nd rate knock off (like older versions of FW). Creating interacive images is much easier than ever -- some of this stuff you can just 'figure out', perhaps with a bit of guidance from the extensive online help system.

Flash: Wow! It has no competition now, and its intergration with FH10 is fabulous. These two pieces alone make for the most powerful vector-based dev environment on the planet. Crucial, considering the exodus from Raster/bit map images on the web.

Bravo MacroMedia! This stuff is so good, I have no idea what you'll do next! (But, please, may I suggest ColdFusion MX for Mac OSX?) ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Formally owned by Allaire, Macromedia's HomeSite 5 is often referred toas the Web editor for hand coders. With this latest release, Macromediaproves that it is more than capable of providing this spectacular Web siteeditor with a very inviting new home.

If you've used HomeSite before, not much has changed regarding installation andstartup. If you've never used the program before, you might want to either flipthrough the resourceful handbook or check out the long list of help referencesin the left-hand column. One topic that caught our eye was the "Learn HTML andCSS" feature, a rather in-depth tutorial for people who are just getting startedwith the language or who need a refresher course. These online courses takeabout a half-hour to complete.

For new users and old hands alike, HomeSite 5.0 offers some very compelling newfeatures, including XHTML support. Macromedia has also worked hard to improvecode validation for many languages, including HTML, JSP, CFML, and more.Checking your code for errors is as simple as hitting Shift and F6, a bigimprovement over the days of scrutinizing code and straining your eyes in searchof missing "tr" and "td" tags. Another important improvement is the newSecondary Files tab, which lets you access multiple files at once, making itmuch easier and faster to incorporate remote files into your HomeSite project. In addition, Macromedia has included an Auto Backup feature, designed to saveyour work as often as you decide is necessary.

Macromedia's acquisition of HomeSite has also resulted in better integrationwith Fireworks and Dreamweaver, the company's signature Web design anddevelopment products. In addition, you can now edit files that are includedwithin your code without having to open that file in a separate program.

The only pet peeve we have about HomeSite is this: HomeSite automaticallyinserts the proper end tag to correspond with whatever start tag you write. However, if you erase the start tag, HomeSite will not automatically erase thecorresponding end tag, which often results in bad code. Not an earth-shatteringflaw, but fixing it would be a small improvement to an otherwise outstandingproduct. --Gisele Toueg ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best HTML code editor program for Windows
This product is often overlooked with the myriad of WYSIWYG visual HTML editors out in the market. Homesite 5.0 is targeted for people who type HTML code by hand or are programmers.

Highlights:
1) Code Insight: As you type, a list of HTML attributes appears in a tooltip interface. You can choose one instead of typing it out completely.

2) Validator: It comes with a decent HTML validator that can validate against several browsers and W3C specs.

3) Top Style Lite: CSS editor to make basic style sheets.

4) Global Search and/or Replace: If you produce accurate HTML templates and later need to make a global change to the template, the search and replace is powerful. Search and/or replace within a single directory, a directory and its sub-folders, current document, or all open documents.

5) FTP ability: It has an FTP client that will allow you to connect to a remote server directly in side Homesite, allowing you to edit files "directly" (it really just downloads the file locally, you edit it, and when you save, it goes back to the server). Nonetheless, it saves a little time and money, if you don't want to get another FTP client.

6) Integration with CSE HTML Validator and Top Style Pro:
The validator and style editor with Homesite 5.0 are basic versions. If you buy the more powerful versions, they seamlessly integrate into Homesite.

7) Syntax highlighting for major scripting languages and HTML:
HTML, Javascript, PHP, JSP, ASP, CFML, Perl

8) XHTML support: VERY important if you care about standards-compliance.

9) Extendable dialog boxes/custom dialog boxes:
You can use the built-in scripting language to create custom dialog windows for Homesite, should you need it.

You get the best value for the dollar with Homesite 5.0, so even casual and hobbyists can take advantage of it. If you must edit web pages visually, then this isn't the product for you. If you want to write web pages with attention to code detail, this program helps a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Right Tool for the Job - Coder's Dream Come True
Since its original release by Allaire Corporation in 1996, HomeSite has defined excellence in web development software in functionality, extensibility, and productivity. Six years and four feature-packed releases later it remains thus, and it still forms the cornerstone of my own development toolbox. Among the reasons for this are the software's configurable and highly unobtrusive workspace, a host of keyboard shortcuts and productivity-and-efficiency features, and a wealth of built-in validation and analysis tools including spell-check, link verification, and real-time, multi-language syntax validation and color coding. Also indispensable are the file tab, sophisticated find and replace functionality, and project management and FTP. Additionally, features can be added, or existing features enhanced, through integration with such excellent third-party tools as CSE HTML Validator Pro, WatchFire Linkbot, and the TopStyle CSS Editor included in the installation. The program even supports the configuration of server mappings to preview dynamically generated pages-ASP, PHP, JSP, etc.--in the same application as you code!

Macromedia HomeSite 5 is the only answer for the serious web developer and hand-coder today. Note that it is NOT a visual solution (e.g. a WYSIWYG), nor is it the same product alleged to be integrated with the new Dreamweaver MX. If you value the sanctity of you code (if you don't want it rewritten behind your back) or if you've enjoyed HomeSite in the past, don't be fooled into "upgrading" to Dreamweaver! It's not the same thing! Cross over and loose all your keyboard shortcuts and hotkeys and all the strength of the "unobtrusive" environment you valued in HomeSite. On the other hand, if you're a designer--if you're not comfortable coding your HTML by hand--or if you "just need" that click-n-drag environment, this is not the tool for you. HomeSite is not a FrontPage or a Dreamweaver. It IS the single most mature, most accommodating development environment for the professional developer (or even programmer) available today, so if that's you, jump! The cost of the software isn't even comparable to the rewards you'll reap in efficiency and professionalism.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but lack of support a problem
I must echo prior comments about poor support. I once submitted a question and the untimely response did not address my question. It was as if a harried support person whipped out an answer without really reading what I'd written.

HomeSite is still a very useful product for those who want to hand code. I would still be using it if it weren't for TopStyle Pro 3.10. TopStyle was created by the original author of HomeSite, Nick Bradbury. Though it is intended primarily for stylesheets, it serves my purposes just as well. (I'm not a pro, so there may be additional features in HomeSite that I don't miss in TopStyle). Moreover, Nick Bradbury and a cadre of volunteers provide excellent support. Take a look at bradsoft.com.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for the beginner.
I am unfamiliar with 4.5 but, to an extent, I can support the comments from the user from New Jersey. I was chosen by a nonprofit corporation to maintain their website. Macromedia support is nonexistent. The user forums are of no help to someone new to website design and maintenance. (The response to request I have made for assistance, has been a rote, cryptic referral to the user forum.) The manual provided by Macromedia is almost completely useless. If you already know HTML code well, your experince may be different. Following the suggestion from the NJ reviewer, I am picking up a used copy of Homesite 4.5 for Dummies and keeping my fingers crossed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Use Dreamweaver first then tweak with Homesite
When starting a new web site, it's nice to whip out a page without worrying about the code. That way you don't lose your train of thought. However, as good as Dreamweaver is, I'm less than impressed with the way it writes code.

That's when you NEED Homesite. With Homesite has plenty of useful tools to help you tweak the code and make the code "look pretty".

This program is a MUST for your web page arsenal. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Building a contemporary Web site isn't easy, and keeping one current can be a logistical nightmare. Macromedia's Dreamweaver offers new tools for managing sites, as well as other new features for streamlining the Web-site production process.

On the surface, Dreamweaver is an easy-to-use Web-page editor and site design tool, supporting all basic page elements. However, it has enough depth to build sophisticated sites with features such as forms, Flash files, frames, cascading style sheets, and ActiveX and Java controls, just to name a few. It offers WYSIWYG editing as well as access to HTML source code.

In version 3.0, editing HTML files has been improved with added support for styles, and an HTML source code inspector, which can be docked (like a Window palette). HTML code can be block-edited in this window as well, by selecting entire lines and dragging them to a new destination.

URLs in imported Flash movie files can now be edited in Dreamweaver 3.0, making it easier for a site administrator to change links in Flash files. Synchronizing local and remote site files works in both directions, ensuring that the latest version of a file is saved on both local hard drives and remote servers.

A history palette has been added as well, and all file editing is recorded and listed. Actions can be undone (like multiple undo) and saved as an action for reuse on other files.

There are more changes and additions that let Dreamweaver work more closely with other Macromedia tools (Flash and Fireworks) and additional HTML-generation tools. We also noticed an improved handling of imported elements. Group-project manageability has been improved via the check-in/check-out file system, and most of Dreamweaver's menus and shortcuts are customizable, making for a better user experience. --Mike Caputo ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great WYSIWYG web builder program.
I started my web page (...) using an online page builder. A good way to start, but not very creative. I then moved up to Adobe PageMill which gave me even more opportunity to design the look I wanted. When I decided on Dreamweaver, it was out of a desire to make my page look even better, and work across platforms. It does the trick.

The program is extremely user friendly and easy to learn. Always a good thing when you're dealing with a limited schedule. The FTP interface even makes sure your support files go with the html page. All in all, a must have for the web head in you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bugs, bugs, wonderful bugs...
Dreamweaver is the most horrid, repulsive web design software ever written for the Mac. I am warning you, fellow Mac users. Macromedia must have bought a can of ladybugs and dropped them in the beta tester's brains-I can't believe that they missed some very important bugs-the site map doesn't work, and there is no cross-platform compatibility. Do not buy this. Please look into GoLive by Adobe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
I went to a camp and usd it. the minute i started i fell in love it is so easy to use. Iam only 11 and it ia breeze.I made a website and it looks awsome.Thank you macromedia, you did it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sheer Brilliance
Macromedia's Dreamweaver is the absolute best WYSIWIG web design program available. As with any program, however, you have to know what you're doing in the HTML edit mode... Until all browsers and platforms interpret code the same, we web designers will need to custom-tweak the HTML. (Problems with pages not being truly WYSIWYG when viewed are the result of design/coding errors or platform incompatibilities. Previewing work in multiple browsers/platforms allows you to fix any bugs before anyone ever sees them.)

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent...but...
Good old Macromedia, they've done it again! Created a brilliant program that does just about anything you could wish...and with the wealth of add-ons available (many are free!), it's just about perfect..BUT...make something on a mac that looks great, and be aware that when viewed on a PC it could very well look terrible ....text moved, way too large, spaces added, images with text over, etc etc...I say buy it and wait for this to be solved, it's still too good to miss. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Only Beginners Will be Satisfied
I can only recommend this software to absolute beginners with very little or no knowledge of Web publishing. To its credit, Visual Page does offer have excellent "tour" files and novices should be able to make their own Web pages after the first day. But other users will be sorely disappointed. It is simply not sophisticated enough for many and does not support enough features. I also frequently have a problem with text and graphics being misaligned once published.

If you are just learning or need a Web site in a hurry, Visual Page has a lot to offer. But once you're beyond the beginning stage, there are far better Web publishing programs out there.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too old.Get Dreamweaver!
Visual Page is good for just getting a site up and running.Nothing else. I've had to hold up on my plans for learning DHTML and ASP because ofthis.Visual Page won't support them. The source code editing is wayoutdated and attempts to do the breaks for you.Numerous bugs, includingpresentation of transparent GIFs, make it annoying.I would hesitate torecommend this product unless you are in an economic fix and it alreadycame with another Symantec product.

4-0 out of 5 stars I use Symantec Visual Page
I have used Visual Page (since 1998) and Front Page and Adobe GoLive and Drumbeat 2000 eCommerce ASP edition for creating websites.I DO like Visual Page for one basic reason. It is quick, it is easy, and it is thesimplest of all those tools to learn. It is a good quality wysiwyg editor. It It fantastic at handling Tables. It handles CSS1 (sytles) very well, but it is not good with CSS2 (positioning). For positioning use FrontPageor Adobe.I have had to bring several people at work up to speed with HTMLand I always use Visual Page as the teaching tool. It's drawbacks are thatit does not have "Publish to a web" functionality like FrontPage. It does not have all the FrontPage server extensions to handle dynamic webpages. It does not do ASP and database access. It can manage a site as aproject, but this feature is not very trustworthy in my opinion.FrontPageis better at this.I love it for it's low learning curve and it's verynice way of allowing me to use VP to create the CSS stylesheet code in thehead of the document and them i simply type class="classname"inside of the tag I want it to be applied to.I rate it pretty high forit's low price, ease of use, stability, CSS functionality, and good cleanhtml markup code. Everybody at work is able to pick it up quickly and runwith it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The cleanist code
Of all the HTML 3.0 compatable WYSIWYG web page creators, this is the best for professional applications. The code it produces is clean and requires a minimum of tweaking and parsing before it can be consideredproduction-quality.

It doesn't handle 4.0 HTML, CSS(P) or DHTML verywell, but works great for RAD (rapid application development) andboss-over-shoulder development.

I still strongly recommend it. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT

Amazon.com Review

Studio MX is the ideal bundle for professional Web designers, bringingtogether Dreamweaver MX for page design, Flash MX for animation andinteractivity, and Fireworks MX for editing and optimizing graphics. Users alsoreceive FreeHand 10, a full-featured vector image editor, and ColdFusion MX fordynamic Web applications. As for the quality of the individual products,Macromedia proves yet again why the company continues to earn the highest praisein its field of expertise.

Dreamweaver MX is a visual Web editor that generates highly compatible codewhile also including useful site-management features. Flash MX is the de factostandard for Web animation, containing rich multimedia content in remarkablycompact files. Fireworks is a great tool for putting the finishing touches onexisting graphics, adding text effects or other elements, and optimizing theresults for Web display. These three are the core Studio MX products, and thesuite offers excellent value for these alone.

Integration between the individual products is generally very good. It beginswith the interface, which uses common elements such as dockable, collapsiblepanels and a dynamic property inspector, so that you can switch comfortablybetween products. On a technical level, the key feature is roundtrip support. You can embed Fireworks graphics and Flash movies in Dreamweaver pages withoutlosing any information, letting you later reopen an element in its originalapplication with all its features intact.

The MX range differs from earlier Macromedia products by targeting applicationdevelopment as well as design. The user will need to build on a Web applicationserver, such as the bundled ColdFusion MX or another supported platform, including ASP, ASP.NET, PHP, or any Java Enterprise Edition server. You canconnect to databases through JDBC, OLE DB, or .NET data providers, depending onthe server platform you're using. Dreamweaver MX is more developer-friendly thanprevious versions, with an enhanced code editor incorporating many of thefeatures of HomeSite, Macromedia's code-centric Web page designer. AlthoughColdFusion MX has its own tag language (ColdFusion Markup Language), itgenerates Java code that can be deployed on any of the leading Java applicationservers. This also enables Java developers to extend ColdFusion with custom tagsand components. In effect, the combination of Dreamweaver and ColdFusionprovides an easy path into dynamic, Java-based Web development. As analternative to ColdFusion, support for Microsoft .NET is a little lesscomprehensive, but still good, and includes visual designers for the key ASP.NETserver-side controls.

Application development is not just a matter of server-side scripting. Flash MXalso has potential as a rich client, with an interface driven by embeddedJavaScript. Through a technology called Flash Remoting, Flash MX offers supportfor Web services. The Studio bundle makes it relatively easy to set upColdFusion to supply these services and for Flash to consume them. While it mayseem strange to think of Flash as a rich client moving beyond the Web page, itdoes make some sense when you consider that it is cross-platform and very widelydeployed. In addition, ColdFusion itself can consume Web services hosted onother platforms.

Taking everything together, Studio MX is an essential development tool forColdFusion, as well as a great bundle for any Web designer. --TimAnderson ... Read more
