1-0 out of 5 stars A good concept but fails on delivery
I have been unable to add photos to my webpage, or find any customer support person who will answer my e-mail. Documentation is virtually nonexistent, and the supposed "help tickets" support do not work. The templates our OK, but hokey and limit your choices severly. If you have your own page design in mind, stay away. One month later, the page still does not work.

Of course, BUYER BEWARE because the domain name you choose is really not reserved for you, but goes to the company MOHAHA who produces the software. Thus, you do not own your own domain name as they lead you to believe (you won't find this out until AFTER reserving your domain name, and even then only by checking register.com). They claim that it nontransferable, so unless you continue to use the same service, the domain name will be lost to you and go to someone else.

Seems like a good deal, but I strongly suggest looking elsewhere, even for a few bucks more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow this is Easy!!
I wanted a website to share family pictures with my parents and other relatives across the country. I tried The Website in a Box and it was a snap. It was easy and everything I needed was included. This is a great product at a great price.

5-0 out of 5 stars This product is saved me hundreds of dollars!!!!
The Website in a box was as easy as the box said. Everything was included domain, hosting, builder, 5-email accounts now i have my own website that i control for only $50 bucks a year. I showed my techy friends and they like it too cause they switch to full service hosting for free and get a smokin deal on a domain and hosting for a year. All in all the best product i have ever bought for my computer i can't believe no one else ever thought of it.

Amazon.com Review

NetObjects Fusion 5.0 provides a what-you-see-is-what-you-get (WYSWYG) interface, good for building business Web sites without HTML expertise. A great tool that makes the process quick and easy, NetObjects includes a variety of predefined styles, with graphics for banners, buttons, horizontal lines, and navigation bars. (Unfortunately, as usual with such predefined styles, most are too garish for business use.)

A warning before continuing: in testing this product, it crashed twice, the second crash resulting in a significant loss of data. Most frustrating, the company provided no option for phone support, and the online support was woefully inadequate.

But if you are new to Web publishing, NetObjects Fusion is still a very good tool to get you started. The crashes we encountered came in testing some Javascript features, which can easily be left out of simple Web sites. The program also comes with literature for a whole host of add-in products that make creating your first Web site even easier. If you are an experienced Web developer, you may want to look at Allaire's Homesite 4.0, but for beginners looking for a robust Web authoring tool, NetObjects Fusion is a strong choice for business application. --Rob Frankland ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Too complicated
This program is more complicated that it needs to be. I'm very familiar with graphics programs and this one isn't great at all. There are so many features that I'd never use. If you want to simplify things, use FrontPage but not this program

5-0 out of 5 stars How to buid a site with no HTML experience?
Try this software. Simply to use; complete. Good work!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing software!
I've used Macromedia DreamWeaver, Microsoft FrontPage, and many other HTML programs. For two years I thought that FrontPage was the best. Then I got into the business of designing websites professionally.

Honestly, NetObjects Fusion is the BEST product I've seen or used yet. I highly recommend it to anyone who is serious about designing websites.

Yay NetObjects!

5-0 out of 5 stars NetObjects user interface is intuitive .....
There were some bugs with the original 5.0 release of this product, but the company does now offer a free patch from their website. (Personally, I never experienced any serious problems with the 5.0 version). As a professional designer, I build several web sites each month, and maintain dozens of sites. I use NetObjects for most of them. I would highly recommend this product to ANYONE who builds web sites, but in particular I'd recommend it to a small business person who wants to build and maintain their own site, without the help of a professional. This product is easy enough for a novice user, but yet it is extremely powerful. FrontPage is really no comparison -- with the pixel-level precision you get with NetObjects, you just have much more control over the appearance of your site.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much more robust than MS Frontpage
I've been a user of MS FrontPage vX.X for several years now, and until now, thought it was the best WYSIWYG editor. I am by all means not a expert at designing web pages, and I don't have time to learn all the in's and out's of HTML. Considering this, I look for the easiest, and most professional web authoring tool that is easy to deploy, setup, and publish with. Best of all, Fusions HTML output works on ANY web server, so there are no FP extensions needed here for functionality. With the ability to utilize many professional templates, and integrate your own HTML should you wish, it is very robust. I would advise this for the very basic beginner, all the way up to the most proficient of programmers. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Dreamweaver UltraDev is an enhanced version of Macromedia'sleading Web-authoring tool. The standout additional feature is dynamiccontent, which is when pages have live links to databases or othertypes of server-side scripting. Most products of this type requireextensive manual coding, but UltraDev has an extensive library ofbuilt-in scripts, called Server Behaviors, that allow even moderatelysophisticated sites to be built with little or no code. Version 4 lookssimilar to its predecessor, but includes important changes that make itmore complete and easier to use.

One of the best new features is the split code and design view, whichlets you edit either the code or the visual design and see changesinstantly echoed between them. There is also built-in security, so youcan create login procedures and password-protected sites. Finally, theLive Objects wizards automatically create page elements to handlecommon tasks, such as a master/detail page set, or forms to insert andupdate records.

UltraDev supports three kinds of server-side scripting: Active ServerPages, JavaServer Pages, and Cold Fusion. Unfortunately, it does notsupport PHP, which is popular on Linux and Unix servers, althoughbecause UltraDev is extensible, there may be some third-party add-ins.The features for the three models are similar but not identical, although in every case there is excellent database support. Its greatstrength is that you can focus on designing your pages and let UltraDevhandle the data access code. You can even display live data at designtime, making it easier to get exactly the right appearance.

Everything in Dreamweaver is also in UltraDev, so this is the idealpackage for Web authors who need to add dynamic content with a minimumof fuss.

About Fireworks 4:

Fireworks is a dedicated Web graphics application. You can create bothvector and bit-map images, optimize them for Web pages, and addnumerous special effects for export direct to HTML.

The starting point is a familiar range of drawing and painting tools, such as shapes, lines, brushes, pens, and selection tools. In thedefault vector mode they create editable, scalable objects, and inbit-map mode they paint pixels. Fireworks supports layers andmasks--virtual overlaid surfaces that you can edit independently, enablingdesigners to achieve a wide range of effects. For example, you can varyopacity and blending to fine-tune the final appearance. Other Fireworkspanels include color, stroke, fill, and effects. There is also alibrary panel where you can store graphic elements for reuse.

A key feature for Web designers is optimization. Fireworks offersmaximum control over the critical tradeoff between quality and size. Atwo-up and four-up view lets you compare the quality of original andoptimized versions, using techniques such as reducing color depth andremoving unused colors. The software offers strong support for GIF,JPEG, and PNG image formats. Fireworks also lets you create animationthat is exported as an animated GIF. It will also generate JavaScriptto produce image rollovers and, in this new version, pop-up menus. There is great support for hotspots and slices, techniques for mappingor dividing an image to support HTML features. Integration withMacromedia's Dreamweaver 4 is better than ever in version 4 ofFireworks. Dreamweaver UltraDev 4/Fireworks Studio combines the twoproducts at a lower price. You can export to Dreamweaver--or launchFireworks directly from Dreamweaver--edit an image, and save it backwith all Fireworks-specific information preserved. --TimAnderson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply THE best web dev combination
DreamWeaver Rocks. Fireworks Rocks. Together they make for a spectacular web design/development combination.

Dreamweaver is packed with features for the beginner through advanced web developer; it's easy and intuitive to use. It may take you a while to learn all the capabilities, but with each successive feature you discover and master, the development process becomes easier and faster.

Fireworks is the best in class web graphics software. It integrates very well with DreamWeaver. Creating animated GIFs is a snap, as is image optimization (file compression), image map creation, and exploring full tables (HTML and all!) for use in DreamWeaver.

You simply cannot go wrong with this package. Photoshop still has its place, but if you focus exclusively on the web and don't need to do exquisite image editing this bundle is all you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome
I've been doing web development since 1996 and, to be honest, I fought tooth and nail against giving up Windows Notepad as my web development tool of choice. Microsoft FrontPage really ruined web development software for me and I pretty much vowed to avoid such applications in the future. Fortunately, my boss insisted that I use Dreamweaver and even sent me off to classes to learn the nuts and bolts. And now I'm hooked.

Dreamweaver is simply awesome and I can't imagine ever going back. Whether your a novice or professional, you'll come to love Dreamweaver's simple interface and ability to tackle otherwise tedious tasks -- such as Cascading Style Sheets, tables, layers -- with ease. Adding Flash, Shockwave or Java is as simple as it can possibly be. I took classes on Dreamweaver, but only because my boss insisted. The software is pretty easy to learn, though those with web development experience will have a fuller understanding (and respect) for the capabilities of the product.

The single most powerful part of Dreamweaver is the use of templates, which allow you to use the same look and feel across multiple pages and have all those pages updated when you make changes to the template. This alone will save you hours!

Another great thing about Dreamweaver is that creates clean HTML. This is something that any developer who has ever had to edit the HTML directly will respect -- especially if you've ever tried to make sense of FrontPage HTML nonsense.

Finally, the FTP application in Dreamweaver is outstanding. It keeps track of every page, graphic, link, etc. in your site and any change to any of them is cascaded through the entire site -- automatically updating links where necessary. With a simple click of a button your site is uploaded to your webserver.

There are so many features I haven't covered, but with the little I have this product is worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stupidly Discontinued!
Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4. They have turned this once great web design package into a hybrid cross of something that looks like Netscape/Flash and called it Dreamweaver MX 2004.

I used Dreamweaver MX 2004 for a month, uninstalled it and went back to Dreamweaver 4. It really is that terrible and the work space is terribly cluttered making it very hard to work within.

Bottom Line -- Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 instead if you can find it. Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 is a very good web design package that knocks Dreamweaver MX 2004 for ten. You will simply hate Dreamweaver MX 2004 when you install it on your system. I nearly barfed after a month of using that *new* completely hostile and non-user friendly piece of unstable and slow excuse for a web design software program.

Get this instead ... if you can find it...

5-0 out of 5 stars Review for Dreamweaver 5
-This review is for Dreamweaver 5- I absolutely love this software. I had Adobe Go Live but I never seemed to take to it like I did with Dreamweaver. Once it was installed within a day, I had made several webpages. As I continued to use it I learned more and more intuitively without needing much guidance from the manual. As a user you can create your webpages visually or in code mode, this makes it a great option for anyone no matter what your skill - it can be adjusted to suit your needs. You can learn and develop your webpage skills as much or as little as you like. You do not need to be intimidated by it's high price. You can learn it and the cost is well worth the output. ...
I don't have to look for anything else, I have hit paydirt with this program! If you are using Front Page or any other visual interface for ease, you know that you are trapped into a forced format, get this program and you will understand the freedom of control without fear!

Amazon.com Review

Those who want to design, manage, and publish one or more Web sites without learning to program (or hiring an HTML pro) should check out NetObjects Fusion MX. Installation is quick, and soon beautiful, seamless sites will flow from your desktop to the Web. All that's needed is a little visual design experience or at least a good eye; the Site Wizard handles all the organizational and content details.

After selecting an architecture and preliminary page structure, the user imports or enters text, pictures, design elements, and Web objects like JavaScript or Flash animation. All selections can be checked for browser and platform compatibility, and adding features such as counters and guest books is painless. Users who want to modify their sites using other software might have problems with the idiosyncrasies of Fusion's output code, though these problems are far from unsolvable. Monkeying around with the low-level site controls is also off-limits unless the code is ported into a more versatile Web design package (or a text editor, for that matter).

An easy-to-use, quick-to-learn application, Fusion produces sites and individual pages that work and look good, whether used for promotion, sales, or self-expression. It's hard to ask for more than that. --Rob Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Business Professional Needing to Build Web Site
After playing around with Microsoft's Front Page and looking at many other options, I tried NetObjects Fusion MX and have been blown away by how easy it was to create a professional, highly functional Web site without having HTML knowledge/experience nor being a programmer nor a Web designer.

When I bought this program a month ago, I'd not had any HTML training or experience. I'm not a designer or graphic artist. And I'm not a programmer/techie. I'm a former corporate exec who recently started my own business and am working with a limited budget for the first time, so I decided to pull together my company's initial Web site on my own.

In just a couple of days of working with NetObjects Fusion, I produced what could be arguably called a decent Web site, with virtually no problems or challenges. It really was as easy as the promotional literature claims.

I used one of the styles that comes packaged with the software, inserted text, pictures and pages with simple dragging and dropping and ended up with a great site. I could customize the look/feel extensively using commands similar to Microsoft Word, not having to insert HTML tags. I even doubted that it would be easy to actually get the stuff I created "pushed" to the Web, but was pleasantly surprised when it worked beautifully on my first try, in only a minute and with only two clicks of the mouse.

One of the coolest features is the tightly integrated "components" available from third-party vendors. I've now used several of them to add a response form that sends an immediate response back to the submitter, a customer registration form that not only sends a response but also stores the data in an Excel file for me to download and import into my customer database, a form that enables a user to browse their computer and choose a file to send to me, pop-up windows, a scrolling window within the page for a user agreement and more.

As I've played around and bought an HTML reference book, I also found it easy to add more tricky things like HTML code inserted in my page for a newsletter sign up form and a "refer a friend" feature. A buddy who is a hard-core programmer tells me that the code generated by the program adds stuff that isn't necessary, but for me that hasn't caused any challenges or problems since I'm not a programmer and the resulting site is great. I haven't found anything not to like about this package and have been amazingly productive with it.

Because I had the benefit of playing with Front Page first, I can honestly say that if you're like me--a non-programmer, non-designer needing to build a professional, highly functional Web site quickly--THIS is the much better choice of program. And I have a powerful site, with real customers visiting and interacting everyday...

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate web design tool
This is the closest thing to magic that you'll find. Wave a mouse - there's a web site structure. Wave it again, there's a page. The manual says it will take 10 minutes to set up a site. I have managed it in three. The product is so good that I have been with it for three versions, and buy it for all my clients.

Fusion's great strength lies in two main areas - firstly the construction of the site is as simple as ABC. Pages can be copied or moved around at will, and structures altered, and the program recreates all the links and navigation bars on the fly. You don't ever have to worry that stuff will be out of date. Secondly, and very importantly for designers, you can make just a few simple buttons, and the program will *automatically* create unlimited rollover buttons for you. No fuss. No coding. Change your mind about the labels as many times as you want - it all updates instantly and without your having to worry. If all this wasn't enough, NetObjects Fusion supports database connectivity, all the latest e technologies, and writes some of the smallest, cleanest and most cross-browser compatible code in the business.

Don't be fooled by the price - this product gives Dreamweaver a run for its money. All included is a great set of support newsgroups, an online Knowledgebase, and the capability to extend the functionality in a kazillion ways, using third party components (yes! like Dreamweaver extensions do!) It's worth many times the price on the box. If you are a small or medium sized business, or a professional designer, you need this product. It makes web design totally pleasurable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for small business/personal use
Fast, easy and efficient, this is a sure winner for most people who do not make web sites for a living.

If you just want a pretty, well laid out and functional site and do not want to spend lot's of time learning a complex web authoring tool NOF cannot be beat by anything out there.

I can do it all from html directly in notepad to Macromedia Studio, but I just love the speed with which I can develop, set up and publish a site with NOF. Three years ago I did a small but quite nice site in only 24 hours - and it's still up(!).

NOF has it's limitations. You can make a site look like millions - but do not expect to be able to publish advanced and interactive content with ease. Here NOF quickly runs into trouble and you may as well grit your teeth for another more advanced package. But than again - if you want to splash Flash all over your site - then why even think of anything else than the original Macromedia package?

So, if you believe content is everything (and that's pretty much the case everywhere) NOF will allow you present your message very efficiently - so you can concentrate on your real work and expertise.

And by the way - don't forget that Fusion 7 is just out now.

5-0 out of 5 stars NetObjects is the ideal Web authoring tool
I start to learn HTML since HTML 2.0, and it makes me to be very familiar with HTML coding. Till now, I've experienced many tools including Notepad, Vi (Unix's editor, like window's Notepad), CMed, HotDog, Homesite, Netscape's composer, Frontpage, Dream weaver.
My first experience with NetObject starting from NetObject 4.0, then, I was impressive how productivity it is, although it's still not perfect at that time. I feel satisfied & comfortable with this kind of WYSIWYG tools since the NetObjects MX was born.
For NetObjects MX, I would like to share my opinions here,

1. NetObjects MX is not only the best tool for beginners, also inlcuding sophisticated guys. If you assume it is designed for beginners only, you are wrong.

NetObjects MX provide many flexible ways to access your HTML coding. If you do know what is HTML, and you are willing to spend time to learn NetObjects MX, you'll find there is no "limitation".

2. Yes, NetObjects produces large HTML files, however it won't sacrifice website download speed too much. The real problem to slow down your website download speed mostly come from the large graphics & multimedia files.

3. Compared with Frontpage & Dreamweaver, NetObjects provides a effective way to increase your productivity with much lower cost.

So, I have to say "thank you" to NetObjects, which is a ideal tool. and it's so happy to hear NetObjects Phoenix is coming soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars I thought this was MY little secret!
NetObject Fusion (NOF) is a hugely productive tool in my arsenal. While the focus of a review might be all the great features in the software--and there are so many, I would focus on what it has done for me.

I've used NOF since version 3.0 after trying everything else out there, including DreamWeaver. NOF was simply the tool I needed to get the job done fast and make it look great. In fact, you can buy the program, and have a professional site in only minutes--if you type fast--using their templates.

As I've progressed through my career, I've relied on tools to give my work a really professional touch: NetObjects, PhotoShop, Quark XPress, and a few really good font and graphics packages. People are stunned at both my creativity and productivity. I wish it was all my doing, but in fact, it is the productivity and control these tools give me.

One of the questions I'm often asked by newer staffers is how to progress their career. One of the things I always mention is to buy the tools you need to make YOU look good. This goes for employees as well as consultants and small business folks.

I've designed dozens of websites with NOF, including LeadEater.com, MikeGrigsby.com, LindaChandler.com, SeminarLove.com, HeavenlySounds.com, just to name a few. Along the way I've converted a lot of people to NOF and the business owners have often bought the program so they can maintain the site for themselves. I don't mind because I enjoy the creative aspect that the program gives me, and I don't enjoy the maintenance as much. This is a must-have tool in your professional arsenal! ...

--Tim Anderson ...

Here's a little no-nonsense advice for those of you who are consideringDreamweaver 4 as your future Webeditor: don't skimp; buy this bundle. The seamless integration of Dreamweaver 4with the nicely upgraded graphics application Fireworks 4 justifies theinvestment in this complete suite.

Macromedia's Dreamweaver 4 packs layer upon layer of powerful features, for justabout any Web developer's needs and preferences. Perfect for individuals andprofessional Web-development teams alike, this latest version offers a fresh setof upgrades and improvements. Programmers who build sites by using only a basictext editor are rewarded with features for source-code inspection. Code View'stext-editing environment offers such customizable features as live syntaxcoloring, tag balancing, and auto indenting. Noncoding types can click and dragsites together by using one of the finer visual editors available. Within thoselayers of features, there are resources for creating forms, Flash files, frames, cascading style sheets, Java and ActiveX files, and more. In Split View, theCode and Design views display simultaneously--providing the best of both worldsfor ambidextrous types.

The quickest and easiest way to design graphics in the Dreamweaver world is viaFireworks 4. Fireworks' strengths lie in its focus on the creation andoptimization of bitmapped and vector Web graphics. The files are integrated intoMacromedia Flash and Dreamweaver easily, and importing/exporting Adobe Photoshopand Illustrator files is a breeze; especially with the program's improved layermask handling, and a new Color Fill Live effect. Version 4 rolls out a newinterface that Flash, Dreamweaver, and FreeHand users will recognize. Thisstandardized format also offers tabbed menus for easy customization, and helpskeep the screen tidy. New tools for adding interactive elements--rollovers,navigation bars, and pop-up menus--are a welcome sight. And a Live Animationfeature creates frame-based GIF animations, using symbols, instances, andtweening features that are familiar to Flash users. With built-in HTML andJavaScript capabilities, version 4 delivers the goods to the Web graphics designcommunity.

Convinced? If not, you can always buy Dreamweaver 4 at full retail, and thenfollow-up with a Fireworks 4 purchase, weeks or months later. Just don't blameus for the lingering red mark from your forehead slap. --Eric Twelker--Thisreview refers to the Windowsversion. ... Read more

I used an earlier version of Quicksite with fairly good luck. I actually had a web site up and running with 3 pages in 1 hour. O.k., so maybe with 20 years in I.T. (Information Technology) left me understanding way more than the average internet user! But I still had no direct knowledge of building a web site. Still, it was cheaper to get QS than paying for a course or professional help. My web site has been up for over 2 years now and I'm going to be adding on a shopping catalog shortly, using QS as the guide. I've saved thousands of dollars creating the web site and maintaining it myself. It's not as fancy as other web sites but then I don't need all that to get across to people. Like with anything technical, you have to work at understanding it, then you have to be like a child and explore and play. I set up two other web sites since then and am pleased with the results. Simple is good.

I was really leary when SpinSite asked for my credit card during their "trial sign-up" but I did go ahead and sign up. I spent a couple of hours playing around with my first website and was pretty surprised by how easy SpinSite was to use and how many features are offered. Then I cancelled my site just to see if they would really go away and then I started looking exploring my options. Well...as the story goes - SpinSite let me out of the trial without a hitch and I couldn't find any other web builder that compared - So I came back - and this time I purchased SpinSite - needless to say ...MY WEBSITE ROCKS! ...
