Amazon.com Review

Dreamweaver UltraDev is an enhanced version of Macromedia'sleading Web-authoring tool. The standout additional feature is dynamiccontent, which is when pages have live links to databases or othertypes of server-side scripting. Most products of this type requireextensive manual coding, but UltraDev has an extensive library ofbuilt-in scripts, called Server Behaviors, that allow even moderatelysophisticated sites to be built with little or no code. Version 4 lookssimilar to its predecessor, but includes important changes that make itmore complete and easier to use.

One of the best new features is the split code and design view, whichlets you edit either the code or the visual design and see changesinstantly echoed between them. There is also built-in security, so youcan create login procedures and password-protected sites. Finally, theLive Objects wizards automatically create page elements to handlecommon tasks, such as a master/detail page set, or forms to insert andupdate records.

UltraDev supports three kinds of server-side scripting: Active ServerPages, JavaServer Pages, and Cold Fusion. Unfortunately, it does notsupport PHP, which is popular on Linux and Unix servers, althoughbecause UltraDev is extensible, there may be some third-party add-ins.The features for the three models are similar but not identical, although in every case there is excellent database support. Its greatstrength is that you can focus on designing your pages and let UltraDevhandle the data access code. You can even display live data at designtime, making it easier to get exactly the right appearance.

Everything in Dreamweaver is also in UltraDev, so this is the idealpackage for Web authors who need to add dynamic content with a minimumof fuss.

About Fireworks 4:

Fireworks is a dedicated Web graphics application. You can create bothvector and bit-map images, optimize them for Web pages, and addnumerous special effects for export direct to HTML.

The starting point is a familiar range of drawing and painting tools, such as shapes, lines, brushes, pens, and selection tools. In thedefault vector mode they create editable, scalable objects, and inbit-map mode they paint pixels. Fireworks supports layers andmasks--virtual overlaid surfaces that you can edit independently, enablingdesigners to achieve a wide range of effects. For example, you can varyopacity and blending to fine-tune the final appearance. Other Fireworkspanels include color, stroke, fill, and effects. There is also alibrary panel where you can store graphic elements for reuse.

A key feature for Web designers is optimization. Fireworks offersmaximum control over the critical tradeoff between quality and size. Atwo-up and four-up view lets you compare the quality of original andoptimized versions, using techniques such as reducing color depth andremoving unused colors. The software offers strong support for GIF,JPEG, and PNG image formats. Fireworks also lets you create animationthat is exported as an animated GIF. It will also generate JavaScriptto produce image rollovers and, in this new version, pop-up menus. There is great support for hotspots and slices, techniques for mappingor dividing an image to support HTML features. Integration withMacromedia's Dreamweaver 4 is better than ever in version 4 ofFireworks. Dreamweaver UltraDev 4/Fireworks Studio combines the twoproducts at a lower price. You can export to Dreamweaver--or launchFireworks directly from Dreamweaver--edit an image, and save it backwith all Fireworks-specific information preserved. --TimAnderson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply THE best web dev combination
DreamWeaver Rocks. Fireworks Rocks. Together they make for a spectacular web design/development combination.

Dreamweaver is packed with features for the beginner through advanced web developer; it's easy and intuitive to use. It may take you a while to learn all the capabilities, but with each successive feature you discover and master, the development process becomes easier and faster.

Fireworks is the best in class web graphics software. It integrates very well with DreamWeaver. Creating animated GIFs is a snap, as is image optimization (file compression), image map creation, and exploring full tables (HTML and all!) for use in DreamWeaver.

You simply cannot go wrong with this package. Photoshop still has its place, but if you focus exclusively on the web and don't need to do exquisite image editing this bundle is all you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome
I've been doing web development since 1996 and, to be honest, I fought tooth and nail against giving up Windows Notepad as my web development tool of choice. Microsoft FrontPage really ruined web development software for me and I pretty much vowed to avoid such applications in the future. Fortunately, my boss insisted that I use Dreamweaver and even sent me off to classes to learn the nuts and bolts. And now I'm hooked.

Dreamweaver is simply awesome and I can't imagine ever going back. Whether your a novice or professional, you'll come to love Dreamweaver's simple interface and ability to tackle otherwise tedious tasks -- such as Cascading Style Sheets, tables, layers -- with ease. Adding Flash, Shockwave or Java is as simple as it can possibly be. I took classes on Dreamweaver, but only because my boss insisted. The software is pretty easy to learn, though those with web development experience will have a fuller understanding (and respect) for the capabilities of the product.

The single most powerful part of Dreamweaver is the use of templates, which allow you to use the same look and feel across multiple pages and have all those pages updated when you make changes to the template. This alone will save you hours!

Another great thing about Dreamweaver is that creates clean HTML. This is something that any developer who has ever had to edit the HTML directly will respect -- especially if you've ever tried to make sense of FrontPage HTML nonsense.

Finally, the FTP application in Dreamweaver is outstanding. It keeps track of every page, graphic, link, etc. in your site and any change to any of them is cascaded through the entire site -- automatically updating links where necessary. With a simple click of a button your site is uploaded to your webserver.

There are so many features I haven't covered, but with the little I have this product is worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stupidly Discontinued!
Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4. They have turned this once great web design package into a hybrid cross of something that looks like Netscape/Flash and called it Dreamweaver MX 2004.

I used Dreamweaver MX 2004 for a month, uninstalled it and went back to Dreamweaver 4. It really is that terrible and the work space is terribly cluttered making it very hard to work within.

Bottom Line -- Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 instead if you can find it. Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 is a very good web design package that knocks Dreamweaver MX 2004 for ten. You will simply hate Dreamweaver MX 2004 when you install it on your system. I nearly barfed after a month of using that *new* completely hostile and non-user friendly piece of unstable and slow excuse for a web design software program.

Get this instead ... if you can find it...

5-0 out of 5 stars Review for Dreamweaver 5
-This review is for Dreamweaver 5- I absolutely love this software. I had Adobe Go Live but I never seemed to take to it like I did with Dreamweaver. Once it was installed within a day, I had made several webpages. As I continued to use it I learned more and more intuitively without needing much guidance from the manual. As a user you can create your webpages visually or in code mode, this makes it a great option for anyone no matter what your skill - it can be adjusted to suit your needs. You can learn and develop your webpage skills as much or as little as you like. You do not need to be intimidated by it's high price. You can learn it and the cost is well worth the output. ...
I don't have to look for anything else, I have hit paydirt with this program! If you are using Front Page or any other visual interface for ease, you know that you are trapped into a forced format, get this program and you will understand the freedom of control without fear!

Building graphics for a Web site often involves the use of several different tools: one for building vector-based images, one for bitmapped images, and still another for incorporating these images into an HTML document. Macromedia's Fireworks 3.0 is all of thesetools--and more--rolled into one.

Fireworks is designed from theground up to be a Web graphics creation package. It is both a vectordrawing tool and a bitmap graphics editor, and the different graphictypes easily mix on any layer. All objects, whether shapes or text, areeditable at any point of production, offering enormous designflexibility. Fireworks also supports layers for maintaining separateelements, and a history palette which can be used to undo numeroussteps or to create replayable actions.

If creating art withinFireworks isn't appealing, or if you are given material from anotherdesigner, not to worry. Fireworks imports most popular formats(including layered native Photoshop files) and keeps layers intact.Fireworks also supports TWAIN-compliant scanners, making it easy toimport material from the real world.

Most of the palettes and toolsare similar to more popular packages, and most of the expected keyboardcommands are present. But as one begins to use and explore Fireworks, the Web-specific features emerge. The slices tool is for specifying howan image will be broken down for use in building it in an HTML tablematrix. The sweet feature here is that the slices can be exportedautomatically, and there is an option for generating the HTML code aswell that assembles these slices in a table.

The software handles bigfeatures--like optimizing the file size of graphics--well. At any stageduring creation, Fireworks shows dynamic previews of the original file,as well as how it will look compressed to JPEG format or dithered downto GIF format. A statistics bar at the bottom of the window lists thefile size and the probable download time at a given connectionspeed.

Fireworks is a fast and flexible tool for creating Webgraphics, and Macromedia is determined to make it the only Web graphicstool needed by any Web designer. They are certainly on the right track.--Mike Caputo ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars These Fireworks Got Wet!
This may be a powerful software package but it is extremely difficult to learn. The documentation is incomplete and full of errors. The help files utilize some archaic navigation system that renders them useless. I have gotten very little use out of this program because in addition to inadequate tutorials the user interface is not at all intuitive....

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
Adobe and Macromedia have gone to war and it's the consumer who benefits.

Fireworks is one of those nearly perfect programs that come up when there's good, healthy competition among the software companies. Though I'm a long-time Adobe follower, I have to hand it to Macromedia on this one. More powerful and versatile than ImageReady, Fireworks is like a Photoshop LE, Illustrator LE (not that there is such a product), and HTML editor all rolled into one as well as being ambassador between all the graphics and web products you could possibly purchase.

Works as both bitmap editor and vector drawing program as well as hacking out your code if you need it. HTML and pictures will go to any program or from any program.

But Fireworks is more than just the assembly garage (though not having to switch between so many programs and diluting your RAM in the process is NICE). It can handle both types of images more than competently and sometimes even better than Photoshop and Illustrator themselves (not like I'm endorsing those programs here. I just happen to use them also). Live previews as you edit, the wonderful option of being able to undo or change ANYTHING long after the history palette has forgotten all about what you did. Even *filters* (which you can import from PS) are undoable long after they've been first applied. This editability (real word?) is my favorite thing about FW. So flexible and powerful, it's perfect for web designers who constantly change their minds or for that page/ image update you wanna do down the line.

The only minus I've found so far is that you can't redraw or specify the direction you want your gradient to flow. At least I haven't found it so far. Supports PS filters, Illustrator paths, exports to Flash too, and will write code for any one of many HTML editors. A must-have for anyone even remotely serious about web graphics. For those not wanting to spend a fortune on software, this is a more than solid choice and you really can do without the others. There are a lot of choices out there. Make the right one.

Treat yourself and get the FW/ Dreamweaver bundle if you're in the market for an editor also. DW's the best HTML editor, too. Hooray for Macromedia! Adobe will be hard-pressed to keep up. ... Read more

Macromedia's Flash 5/FreeHand 9 Studio seamlessly integratesboth old and new media by providing two excellent programs tomanipulate and create art and animation for almost any medium. Flashdelivers cutting-edge, high-impact Web design, while FreeHand providesmultiple options for publishing enhanced graphics both on and offline.

This revolutionary package starts with Flash 5, Macromedia'saward-winning Web content creation software, which has become the de factostandard for animation and dynamic interactive content online. It'sdifficult to go to any cutting-edge media site today and not encounterFlash animation behind all the magic.

Flash has a history of being the designer's favorite for creatinginnovative Web content, but Flash 5 goes above and beyond the call ofduty by offering enhanced tools, options, and integration, whichprovide the user unparalleled license for creativity and expression.Bezier curves? Motion tweening? Perspective fields? No problem. Flashdoes it all and more.

One major reason why Flash is so attractive for Web publishing is itsability to reuse components through the object library, substantiallyminimizing the required file size for complex interfaces andanimations. This is what provides Flash with its overwhelming power.Just as JPEG and GIF compression helped make graphics on the Web aneconomical and virtually necessary feature, Flash is helping to makeanimation ubiquitous online, even for the unfortunate masses stillusing low-speed analog modems.

Even existing Flash users will find the upgrade to Flash 5 beneficial.Almost every tool's options have been moved onto customizable palettes, which help consolidate and unify the many features of Flash. Inaddition, Flash 5 offers excellent integration with existing software, including FreeHand.

Macromedia FreeHand 9 manages to keep one leg in the print mediageneration while placing its other foot firmly in new media by offeringWeb publishing options right next to PostScript, Photoshop, and Flashexporting. In addition to that basic integration, you can also shareobject libraries between FreeHand and Flash, helping to truly unifyprint and Internet media.

All told, the Flash 5/FreeHand 9 Studio package seamlessly integratesboth standard desktop publishing and print media with cutting-edgeinteractive Web trends and innovative animation techniques. Whetheryou're an existing print publisher trying to adopt new technologies, ora high-impact Web developer attempting to transform older printpresentations into deliciously captivating new-media masterpieces,Flash 5 and FreeHand 9 will empower you to achieve new heights inpresentation and innovation.

With Flash and FreeHand, Macromedia holds its place as the leader intoday's Internet-centric multimedia field. Taking into accountMacromedia's past record for anticipating new trends, it is safe to saythat it will continue to lead the online dynamic content revolution andsatisfy both designers and end users with fast and furious innovation.--Victor Andersen

5-0 out of 5 stars Flash 5 is the Samurai Sword of Tools!!!!!
Who am I? I am a website designer, corporate trainer and Flash 5 designer/creator. I am Microsoft certified, CTT certified, M CIW D, A+. I-Net+, Net+, IBM certified recently. I know my stuff. This program rules! Version 5 has increased its ease of use, the dynamics of ActionScript has blossomed 4 times over, and things have also become more simple and user friendly. If you thought Flash 4 was an awesome weapon, then version 5 will rock your world once you learn the new abilities. IT IS NOT BUGGY like the other review claims. I have had Flash 5 since it was first available. Has it crashed on me once or twice? Yes. Why? Well, sometimes it just happens. Computers arenot perfect. Out of the few times it happened, it was either my fault, or when I was trying to use another program within Flash 5. Flash 5 has also been updated with a patch. I doubt you will have any problems my friends. Freehand 9 DOES NOT weight this package down!!! Freehand 9 lets you mock up and layout websites quickly to show your clients a "working quickie example". This saves me time over and over again! It also lets me create nicely streamlined graphics to use within Flash 5. Creating them in Freehand first can be easier than in Flash sometimes, the tools are also a bit better. Together, they become a hurricane of creative power to be unleashed upon your competitors! ActionScript is taken to a new level too. Forget the ActionScript you knew in Flash 4. Childs' play!!! It is a whole new ball game. The concepts, layout and theory are still the same, but the new commands, and means of using the..especially the new "dot notation" system is incredibly easy and quick! Ignore the other reviews that pooh, pooh this product. If they were right, Macromedia wouldnot have a BEST SELLING and one of the BEST RATED vector graphics programs that all of us PRO designers use. Don't get this suite if all you want to do is create a web page for your kitty or puppy. DO get this if your career needs to go further! Best Wishes and check out my book reviews for Flash 5 tutorial books hereon Amazon.

Here's a little no-nonsense advice for those of you who are consideringDreamweaver 4 as your future Webeditor: don't skimp; buy this bundle. The seamless integration of Dreamweaver 4with the nicely upgraded graphics application Fireworks 4 justifies theinvestment in this complete suite.

Macromedia's Dreamweaver 4 packs layer upon layer of powerful features, for justabout any Web developer's needs and preferences. Perfect for individuals andprofessional Web-development teams alike, this latest version offers a fresh setof upgrades and improvements. Programmers who build sites by using only a basictext editor are rewarded with features for source-code inspection. Code View'stext-editing environment offers such customizable features as live syntaxcoloring, tag balancing, and auto indenting. Noncoding types can click and dragsites together by using one of the finer visual editors available. Within thoselayers of features, there are resources for creating forms, Flash files, frames, cascading style sheets, Java and ActiveX files, and more. In Split View, theCode and Design views display simultaneously--providing the best of both worldsfor ambidextrous types.

The quickest and easiest way to design graphics in the Dreamweaver world is viaFireworks 4. Fireworks'strengths lie in its focus on the creation and optimization of bitmapped andvector Web graphics. The files are integrated into Macromedia Flash andDreamweaver easily, and importing/exporting Adobe Photoshop and Illustratorfiles is a breeze; especially with the program's improved layer mask handling, and a new Color Fill Live effect.

Amazon.com Review

Director 8.5 Shockwave Studio is an essential and excitingupgrade for Web authors who need the latest 3-D capabilities, Flash, and RealMedia support. Version 8.5 of Macromedia's Director hasstrengthened the product's position as a flagship multimedia tool.

The sheer depth and power of Director 8.5 does not hinder beginners, who will find that the streamlined interface and library ofdrag-and-drop behaviors allow them to produce impressive results quickly. Themore experienced user will find that--with more than 800 new commandscovered in well-written documentation--Director's Lingo scriptinglanguage provides good detail and control over interaction anddelivery.

Director's new 3-D capabilities are based on Intel technology, and aregeared toward delivering the goods regardless of the user's connectionspeed. It does this by employing technology that automatically changesthe detail of 3-D objects depending on the user's bandwidth and thespeed of his or her computer.

Although Director doesn't really help you create 3-D models--you mustimport these from other third-party applications using the new W3Dformat--once in place, key frame and bones-based animation are employedto bring these models to life. In addition, there are a number ofpresupplied 3-D behaviors, particle effects, and an option to renderwith a flat, cartoon-style look. All these factors combine to giveDirector some powerful new moves that will undoubtedly be of enormousinterest to 3-D developers.

Director 8.5 supports two other important Web technologies that furtheradd to its versatility. RealMedia is now supported, allowing the authorto rotate, scale, and skew clips while they are playing. Flash supporthas been updated to version 5, and, with its improved integration, youcan now control Flash media within Director by using Lingo.

Other new and extremely useful features of Director 8.5 ShockwaveStudio include support for XML data and better multiuser serversupport. This includes new server-side scripting and an increase in thenumber of concurrent users to 2,000, which will enable rich andimmersive multiuser experiences.

Game developers and specialists in Web-based interaction willundoubtedly benefit from these new features, which now make Director anessential choice for multiuser, interactive, and online experiences.--John Bloor

Amazon.com Product Description

Macromedia Flash 5 and Macromedia Generator 2 Developer Edition together offer the complete solution for designing and automating high-impact Web site graphics. Flash is a popular choice for producing high-impact, low-bandwidth Web experiences, and Generator is the data-driven solution for automating Web site graphics. Flash provides a broad range of design, assembly, and animation tools. Within the Flash user interface, Generator authoring extensions offer predefined objects like charts, tickers, tables, and lists--enabling you to design your site easily with data-driven graphics. Generator avoids costly static-content updates that require you to go into the authoring environment, make the updates, and push the pages live. When you modify content in your data source, the new information is reflected in your Flash Web site automatically, which drastically reduces maintenance time. Generator takes content, images, sounds, behaviors, and information that are stored in data sources, and uses variables to update a Web site automatically, and without additional engineering resources. Generator makes updates to your Web page when a user visits the Web site and requests personalized information, and when a change occurs to the database of information that's shown on your Web site. The flexible nature of Generator templates gives you the ability to customize the user's experience without having to recreate your graphics multiple times. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Flash is extremely buggy now
Flash 4 was the pinnacle of flash-dom. This version crashes all the time, and Macromedia has not offered a fix.

1-0 out of 5 stars Freehand drags this package down
The tool-heavy approach to this software makes it very difficult to actually do anything with the software. I had hoped to come away with more than just a rudimentary knowledge of the product, but after several days of frustration, I gave up and picked up a copy of Illustrator. It seems much better! ...

Read more
