5-0 out of 5 stars Need clarification
The Fireworks MX listing doesn't list the Macintosh operating system. Is that an oversight?
I'm using Dreamweaver 4 and not sure that this program is compatable with DW 4.

5-0 out of 5 stars Admit you have a problem!
...Fireworks is the ONLY CHOICE for the web design professional. ...if you want FLEXABLE, EASY TO EDIT, web graphics ...then there truly is no other choice. ... Fireworks is the best web graphics tool I have ever used!"...

5-0 out of 5 stars They just keep getting better...
One would think that Macromedia would run out of ideas. Their past software is so good (Fireworks 4, Flash 5, etc.) that I thought there was little room for improvement. I was wrong. The new, consistent UI across applications is simply the best I have ever seen, better even than Microsoft in some of its new products such as Visio 2002.

The interface alone is worth the upgrade price because of the efficiencies it brings, but there is much more here. Being more of a vector guy, I don't use most of the raster tools, but there are some great new ones such as smudge, dodge and burn, etc. The polygon slice tool makes short work of sophisticated rollover diagrams.

I would strongly recommend getting on the Macromedia bandwagon. With cross-browser problems still raging (although NS 7.0 goes a long way to help), I believe Flash is simply going to take over the Internet, period. Fireworks MX is the best way to build your Flash graphics.

Get it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Beware of Customer Support
Fireworks is powerful. However, I encountered some bugs in the extensibility API--something most users won't ever encounter. The customer support department has ignored this bug since version 3, and they wont respond to my requests for assistance. I purchased version 4 just before MX came out, and the upgrade seems too costly--especially since I recently purchased version 4. They won't tell me if the bug is fixed in MX, so I assume it isn't. Again, while this won't affect most users, their lack of responsiveness is troubling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful + Flexible
Very powerful and flexible web design tool -- you can use this program alone to create sleek and modern websites. Unbeatable in terms of ease of use -- built-in tutorial lessons give newbies a sense of confidence, while a plethora of good guide books such as those published by Peachpit Press and Friends of Ed are available for more in-depth exploration of the possiblities that this program brings to the design table.

Fireworks MX allows for an entire graphical website to be built from scratch if one so wishes -- one can design a background, create or enhance graphics, customize text (drop shadow, anyone?) and arrange for nifty javascript rollovers without ever handling any code. Tight integration with other Macromedia MX products such as Dreamwaver also increases ease of website creation and upload -- exporting to Dreamweaver, for example, is extremely simple and allows for entire websites to be ready for upload in very little time.

The almost-inevitable downside to such a powerful program, however, is the computing power needed to operate it. If your computer is not quite on the cutting edge of technology anymore (much like mine), be prepared for slower program start-up times and delays while the program applies customizations (e.g. filters) to graphics or to text. System requirements for Windows include a 300MHz Intel Pentium II Processor, 64 MB of free available system RAM (128 MB recommended), 80 MB of available disk space and Adobe Type Manager Version 4 or later for use with Type 1 fonts. Requirements for Macs include a Power Macintosh G3 Processor, Mac OS 9.1 or higher, 64 MB of free available system RAM (128 MB recommended), 80 MB of available disk space and Adobe Type Manager Version 4 or later for use with Type 1 fonts (OS 9.x).

1-0 out of 5 stars big let down
I am working on a Power Machintosh G3 with Mac OS 9.2. Having used Freehand 5.5 for several years I was looking forward to upgrading to a more functional version. I specifically needed the new function of creating PDF files.

None of my expectations of FH10 have been met.

Exported PDF files are incomplete. Items are dropped without any discernible reason. This makes the function useless except for base preliminary review purposes.

The exporting functions get hung up and it is necessary to toggle over to the finder to get the export to finish.

The application runs slow. It takes a full second to change over tools which leave me magnifying when I try to drag, editing text when I am trying to draw a line and pulling objects off the page when I was reorienting the view window manually.

The basic key command, Command (.) to stop and action, no longer stops anything that I have used it on even though it is referred to in the action window.

I have lost two major files due to application failures. One corruption was due to a crash and a second corruption of a file that occurred after saving it. These two failures alone have cost me days of labor. Saving the files regularly does no good if the file itself is corrupted due to some programming error.

I am running 4 times the requested memory for the application. That translates to 15 times my largest file. It cuts into my use of other applications for no increase in utility. There must be a big hole in the program regarding memory management as there is one files I can not open "out of memory" even though it is a small fraction of the application memory allocated.

To put the icing on this, customer support now requires hours of searching tech notes, which seem to be users comments, or paying to get information on a product they seemingly have not finished.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a standard app
Freehand 10 is a good program. It's more simple than Illustrator with just about the same features and tools. It has it share of bugs though. I'd have given it a lower score if Illustrator wasn't its only real competition.

1-0 out of 5 stars Half the product that Illustrator is
If you look, you'll see that FreeHand has the same number of "features" that Illustrator has. However, each of the features in Illustrator is SO much more deep than those in FreeHand. For instance, transparency in FreeHand is limited to solid colors of individual paths, and you can only stack a certain number (3?) of transparent paths on top of each other. Compare that to Illustrator, where transparency can be applied to anything, from text to paths to pixel images. And Gradients, and mesh. And just the stroke or the fill (and to mulitple strokes and fills on the same object). Or to groups or layers. And then there's all the Photoshop blending modes like lighten, hue, difference and more. And opacity masks.

Maybe "half" is giving FreeHand too much credit.

4-0 out of 5 stars Depends on how you will use it...
I had a really difficult time trying to decide between Macromedia Freehand 10 and Adobe Illustrator 10. Especially since ZDNet gave a bad review to Freehand, I was really confused.

I played around extensively with the demos of both software and this is what I concluded:

1. It all depends on why you need an illustration software. If you are primarily involved with desktop publishing, go with Illustrator because its way more powerful and has really nifty tools. Try imagining a software that includes the features of both Fireworks and Freehand - that's what Illustrator is.

2. However, if you are involved in web publishing or just want the very basic illustration toolset to work with software like Macromedia's Fireworks and Flash, get Freehand. Of course, barring the perspective grid, whatever you do in Freehand, you can do in Illustrator but transferring images to Flash is not always painless.

3. The other factor to consider is price. I think Freehand is heavily overpriced and costs almost the same as Illustrator which is ludicruous. If at all possible, get Freehand as part of the Flash and Freehand Studio where the price is more reasonable. Or you can get Xara which is cheap and yet has a great feature-set.

Overall, Freehand is a pretty good software with decent features and would sell a lot more if Macromedia was more realistic with its price and target users.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice
Pretty nice stuff. Illustrator with direct Flash support, but without filters. Illustrator 10 is buggy though. Take your pick. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Since Macromedia launched Flash in 1996, it has grown into the de factostandard for development and delivery of high-impact, visually rich, interactiveWeb content. Flash MX promises a similar generational shift to the oneexperienced when Flash 5's enhanced ActionScript introduced an unprecedenteddegree of interactivity to the Web.

The most exciting new features in this version are those aimed at e-contentdevelopers and programmers. Integration with application servers such asColdFusion MX and Microsoft's .NET and Internet protocols like HTML, WebTV, andWAP make it possible to deliver Flash content to a range of platforms--from PCsto PlayStations to mobile phones.

But Flash MX also offers plenty to those who aren't part of a large team ofdesigners and programmers developing corporate sites. Novice users can takeadvantage of a range of prebuilt, customizable components, including scrollbars, buttons, list and combo boxes, and QuickStart templates for presentations, photo albums, ads, and more, making it possible to achieve great resultsquickly.

The Flash MX interface is now consistent with Dreamweaver and Fireworks. Nestedlayer folders and improved cursor feedback for frame adjustment make thetimeline more manageable, and the context-sensitive properties panel andcollapsing, dockable panels reduce screen clutter considerably. Vector drawingtools, one of Flash's weaknesses, have been largely overlooked, but there is anew Free Transform tool, which combines rotate, scale, and skew options. Video, another Flash weak spot, has fared much better with the inclusion of theSorensen Spark video codec. Users can import a variety of formats, includingMPEG, DV, and QuickTime. In addition, users can animate and script AVI and videoclip objects in the same way as bit maps, even using them on a mask layer.

Flash MX is backwards-compatible with version 5 (meaning users can publishversion 5 SWF files, although MX SWF files require the MX player), removing theonly argument for not upgrading. Those not yet convinced of the merits of Flashneed only look around. --Ken McMahon ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Script Builder helps.
This program is great.
It is made for the JavaScript and Web Page creators of the world that KNOW HOW TO CODE! This is not a visual program. It is a glorified NOTEPAD for users to look at code, and quickly test via a one touch F8. Flip back and forth from your code to its output instantly. Worried about browsers.... Scriptbuilder lets you integrade IE or Netscape right in to test using their engines.

I've used it for JavaScript over the past 4 years and its still my favorite development tool.

It has tons of room for advanced users who want some 1 touch code generation. I can see you cringing! Don't. This book lets you click a button that generates (clean) code to do such things as rolovers, buttons, form elements etc. The beauty of it is that you are right there to change the code, names etc to your specific demands. The best part is that its not too over imposing like other "code generators" that shove Meta tags in touting the fact that the page was created by "it" and not YOU. No unwanted code!!!

I suggest this tool over any other web development tool out there for the advanced user who knows HTML and JavaScript.

Fully deserving of 5 stars. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use ... but you're on your own
This product is much simpler to use than what is to be expected w/ Photoshop but the support for this product is virtually non-existent. I've had two problems (one w/ it seeing a newly added font) and after a half a dozen emails to their support group, I've been all but ignored and still have the problem ... effectively rendering the application useless. On to Photoshop I go ... at least there's millions of benevolent users that I can bounce the issues off of in a newsgroup.

5-0 out of 5 stars At the top of my list!
I've been conducting web-design tutorials for three years now, and so far NetStudio is the BEST web graphics creation tool I've ever come across! It takes about an hour to learn and beats the learning-curve of Photoshop or anything else; it's not as complicated and has the convenience of step-by-step wizards. Nothing quite like it out there. I also use NetStudio when I do presentations for clients (I'm a freelance designer also), because you can create a website (in front of your client!) in a few minutes. As teacher and user, I recommend!!! And by the way... NetStudio has a very literate support staff (meaning, they talk in full sentences). That's something new in this industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super product and easy to use!
I started out with this graphic program and still have great use for it today in flash 5 8) Buy, use it, create with it, love every minute of it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Netstudio is Superb!
Netstudio is a great piece of software when it comes to creating unique graphics for websites. For beginners, it's one of the easiest graphics programs to use, and includes templates and a very friendly workspace. Beginners will be turning out custom graphics in no time. More experienced users can import and modify images, or create more complex graphics. I highly recommend Netstudio over PaintShop and some of the other pieces of graphics software. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Director 8.5 Shockwave Studio is an essential and excitingupgrade for Web authors who need the latest 3-D capabilities, Flash, and RealMedia support. Version 8.5 of Macromedia's Director hasstrengthened the product's position as a flagship multimedia tool.

The sheer depth and power of Director 8.5 does not hinder beginners, who will find that the streamlined interface and library ofdrag-and-drop behaviors allow them to produce impressive results quickly. Themore experienced user will find that--with more than 800 new commandscovered in well-written documentation--Director's Lingo scriptinglanguage provides good detail and control over interaction anddelivery.

Director's new 3-D capabilities are based on Intel technology, and aregeared toward delivering the goods regardless of the user's connectionspeed. It does this by employing technology that automatically changesthe detail of 3-D objects depending on the user's bandwidth and thespeed of his or her computer.

Although Director doesn't really help you create 3-D models--you mustimport these from other third-party applications using the new W3Dformat--once in place, key frame and bones-based animation are employedto bring these models to life. In addition, there are a number ofpresupplied 3-D behaviors, particle effects, and an option to renderwith a flat, cartoon-style look. All these factors combine to giveDirector some powerful new moves that will undoubtedly be of enormousinterest to 3-D developers.

Director 8.5 supports two other important Web technologies that furtheradd to its versatility. RealMedia is now supported, allowing the authorto rotate, scale, and skew clips while they are playing. Flash supporthas been updated to version 5, and, with its improved integration, youcan now control Flash media within Director by using Lingo.

Other new and extremely useful features of Director 8.5 ShockwaveStudio include support for XML data and better multiuser serversupport. This includes new server-side scripting and an increase in thenumber of concurrent users to 2,000, which will enable rich andimmersive multiuser experiences.

Game developers and specialists in Web-based interaction willundoubtedly benefit from these new features, which now make Director anessential choice for multiuser, interactive, and online experiences.--John Bloor ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

After Effects 4.1, in spite of the one-tenth increment, is a majorupgrade from 4.0 and is light years ahead of the venerable 3.1. For thoseunfamiliar with the tool, here's what there is to know: there are few featurefilms, television-show title sequences, broadcast and cable shows, andtelevision commercials that make it through production without being touched byAfter Effects. It is the animation and compositing tool of choice among themajority of working professionals, and with good reason.

After Effects is a different program to different people. For some, it is a toolfor creating motion graphics for film titles. For others, it is a tool forcompositing layers of animation on top of live action. And, for still others, itis ideal for creating animated textures for backgrounds, or for use as decals ina 3-D application. It can import and export almost any type of graphic format, including QuickTime movies, AVI movies, TGA sequences, TIFF sequences, andanimated GIFs.

There are numerous new features with this upgrade, including a project flowchartview, where one can see diagrammatically how compositions and layers are beingused and which ones are nested in other comps. Also, RAM previews values ofeffects sliders can be customized, allowing for very fine control of any effectproperty.

An important new feature is Collect Files. Save a copy of the project file andall imported elements into a specified folder, and you're ready for archiving ortransporting to another site for rendering. Be careful with this action, though:if your project uses any large video clips, make sure you have enough free spaceon the destination drive to accommodate everything.

All these features (and the flexibility) come at a price: After Effects isreasonably easy to use for very simple work, but it requires some effort tomaster for professional-level output. Although the tutorials in the manual areenough to get one started, a good companion book for deeper learning isClassroom in a Book: Adobe After Effects from Adobe Press.

After being idle for literally years (referred to as the "3.1 years"), After Effects has rocketed through a growth spurt and is maturing into a deepand respected program. For any serious film or video animator, motion graphicsartist, or compositor, this upgrade is a must-have. --Mike Caputo ... Read more
