4-0 out of 5 stars I like the programs, but I think it needs improvement.
I bought this package based on a friend's recommendation. Looking back I wish I had saved the money and just bought Dreamweaver. I think they are both great programs, but from my experience you need only need one. If you own Illustrator or Photoshop you can build your graphics there and import them into Dreamweaver. If you don't just buy Fireworks, you can build an entire site and all your graphics in this program.

I am a novice at web design, and I wanted to jump right in with setting up a site. I found both of the instructional guides a bit frustrating and overwhelming. I was surprize to find that I even though I had bought the Mac version, the instruction books were cross-platform for both PC and Mac, favoring the PC platform. (A HUGE turn-off for a Mac person like me.)

After doing the tutorials I tried to build my site by using both programs. I am mainly a print designer and was thinking that Dreamweaver and Fireworks like I use QuarkXPress and Illustrator, but it doesn't work that way.

Like I said before you only need one. I think they are both great programs, but I don't see the need to have both, which is why I gave it a four.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great program, documentation could be better
A complete novice in web design, I just spent 4 days developing an 8 page web site with Dreamweaver, which I had never used before. The web site's great, and I love the program. An excellent tutorial guides you through the basic steps, and Macromedia provides a 400+page downloadable reference manual. A bit bulky, and difficult to find what I needed, but the program itself is pretty intuitive, once you've worked through the tutorial. I still haven't figured out how to upload my HTML files using Dreamweaver (as far as I can tell, you're supposed to be able to), which is why I rate this only a 4; otherwise, from uploading graphics and text to layout and links, a user friendly program that will have you on the www in no time at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dreamweaver is a dream come true!
Dreamweaver is well beyond its opponets in web-design, and anybody who designs web pages should have this program! Packing every single tool you would need or ever want to make your website the way you want it, Dreamweaver is easy from the start. Although I'm not an actual owner of Dreamweaver, I have friends who own this product, and every one of them has been blown away bit it, including me. This program is easy to use, and for those who are still using old programs like "Visual Page", I suggest that you upgrade to this program, which you will never regret. Many people still stick with the old fashioned way of making mouse-overs, but Dreamweaver makes it easy, and this can be done in under a minute, without having to spend hours on Java coding. I personally like this program much more then Adobe "GoLive", which are the two leading web-design programs. Make your choice, but I think Dreamweaver is the true program that will make every website look incredible. It's worth the price tag, every cent! The day will come soon when I hope to have the priviledge of owning this program myself. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Here's a little no-nonsense advice for those of you who are consideringDreamweaver 4 as your future Webeditor: don't skimp; buy this bundle. The seamless integration of Dreamweaver 4with the nicely upgraded graphics application Fireworks 4 justifies theinvestment in this complete suite.

Macromedia's Dreamweaver 4 packs layer upon layer of powerful features, for justabout any Web developer's needs and preferences. Perfect for individuals andprofessional Web-development teams alike, this latest version offers a fresh setof upgrades and improvements. Programmers who build sites by using only a basictext editor are rewarded with features for source-code inspection. Code View'stext-editing environment offers such customizable features as live syntaxcoloring, tag balancing, and auto indenting. Noncoding types can click and dragsites together by using one of the finer visual editors available. Within thoselayers of features, there are resources for creating forms, Flash files, frames, cascading style sheets, Java and ActiveX files, and more. In Split View, theCode and Design views display simultaneously--providing the best of both worldsfor ambidextrous types.

The quickest and easiest way to design graphics in the Dreamweaver world is viaFireworks 4. Fireworks' strengthslie in its focus on the creation and optimization of bitmapped and vector Webgraphics. The files are integrated into Macromedia Flash and Dreamweaver easily, and importing/exporting Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator files is a breeze;especially with the program's improved layer mask handling, and a new Color FillLive effect. Version 4 rolls out a new interface that Flash, Dreamweaver, andFreeHand users will recognize. This standardized format also offers tabbed menusfor easy customization, and helps keep the screen tidy. New tools for addinginteractive elements--rollovers, navigation bars, and pop-up menus--are awelcome sight. And a Live Animation feature creates frame-based GIF animations, using symbols, instances, and tweening features that are familiar to Flashusers. With built-in HTML and JavaScript capabilities, version 4 delivers thegoods to the Web graphics design community.

Convinced? If not, you can always buy Dreamweaver 4 at full retail, and thenfollow-up with a Fireworks 4 purchase, weeks or months later. Just don't blameus for the lingering red mark from your forehead slap. --Eric Twelker ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply THE best web dev combination
DreamWeaver Rocks. Fireworks Rocks. Together they make for a spectacular web design/development combination.

Dreamweaver is packed with features for the beginner through advanced web developer; it's easy and intuitive to use. It may take you a while to learn all the capabilities, but with each successive feature you discover and master, the development process becomes easier and faster.

Fireworks is the best in class web graphics software. It integrates very well with DreamWeaver. Creating animated GIFs is a snap, as is image optimization (file compression), image map creation, and exploring full tables (HTML and all!) for use in DreamWeaver.

You simply cannot go wrong with this package. Photoshop still has its place, but if you focus exclusively on the web and don't need to do exquisite image editing this bundle is all you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome
I've been doing web development since 1996 and, to be honest, I fought tooth and nail against giving up Windows Notepad as my web development tool of choice. Microsoft FrontPage really ruined web development software for me and I pretty much vowed to avoid such applications in the future. Fortunately, my boss insisted that I use Dreamweaver and even sent me off to classes to learn the nuts and bolts. And now I'm hooked.

Dreamweaver is simply awesome and I can't imagine ever going back. Whether your a novice or professional, you'll come to love Dreamweaver's simple interface and ability to tackle otherwise tedious tasks -- such as Cascading Style Sheets, tables, layers -- with ease. Adding Flash, Shockwave or Java is as simple as it can possibly be. I took classes on Dreamweaver, but only because my boss insisted. The software is pretty easy to learn, though those with web development experience will have a fuller understanding (and respect) for the capabilities of the product.

The single most powerful part of Dreamweaver is the use of templates, which allow you to use the same look and feel across multiple pages and have all those pages updated when you make changes to the template. This alone will save you hours!

Another great thing about Dreamweaver is that creates clean HTML. This is something that any developer who has ever had to edit the HTML directly will respect -- especially if you've ever tried to make sense of FrontPage HTML nonsense.

Finally, the FTP application in Dreamweaver is outstanding. It keeps track of every page, graphic, link, etc. in your site and any change to any of them is cascaded through the entire site -- automatically updating links where necessary. With a simple click of a button your site is uploaded to your webserver.

There are so many features I haven't covered, but with the little I have this product is worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stupidly Discontinued!
Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4. They have turned this once great web design package into a hybrid cross of something that looks like Netscape/Flash and called it Dreamweaver MX 2004.

I used Dreamweaver MX 2004 for a month, uninstalled it and went back to Dreamweaver 4. It really is that terrible and the work space is terribly cluttered making it very hard to work within.

Bottom Line -- Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 instead if you can find it. Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 is a very good web design package that knocks Dreamweaver MX 2004 for ten. You will simply hate Dreamweaver MX 2004 when you install it on your system. I nearly barfed after a month of using that *new* completely hostile and non-user friendly piece of unstable and slow excuse for a web design software program.

Get this instead ... if you can find it...

5-0 out of 5 stars Review for Dreamweaver 5
-This review is for Dreamweaver 5- I absolutely love this software. I had Adobe Go Live but I never seemed to take to it like I did with Dreamweaver. Once it was installed within a day, I had made several webpages. As I continued to use it I learned more and more intuitively without needing much guidance from the manual. As a user you can create your webpages visually or in code mode, this makes it a great option for anyone no matter what your skill - it can be adjusted to suit your needs. You can learn and develop your webpage skills as much or as little as you like. You do not need to be intimidated by it's high price. You can learn it and the cost is well worth the output. ...
I don't have to look for anything else, I have hit paydirt with this program! If you are using Front Page or any other visual interface for ease, you know that you are trapped into a forced format, get this program and you will understand the freedom of control without fear!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best I've used.
I have used many products, from straight editors like TextPad and NoteTab to Cold Fusion Studio and Microsoft FrontPage. I have their strengths and weaknesses. I personally prefer Macromedia for it's suite approach of tying the products together for high powered web development. I especially use Dreamweaver and Fireowrks extensively together. Dreamweaver also can handle ASP, JSP, PHP and ColdFusion development.

Then you also get Flash, Freehand and ColdFusion Developer to boot.

Tell me another that works with all and has all the powerful tools that Macromedia has and I will definitely be interested!
Buy it before December 31, 2002, as it goes up after that. It's now... on Macromedia's site and about... at Amazon after rebates. It's a great investment.

There's also a cheaper Macomedia web design product out there now called Contribute. I paid an introductory $99 to check it out for my daughter who is also starting to build web pages at 6 years old. So far it seems easy to use for people who don't want to get into the coding side of things.

The Macomedia Studio MX suite is definitely the way to go if you have the money. It's well worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Value for your money
Ok first thing I want to say, I do not work for Macromedia, and my only motivation in writing this, is to help you. This is THE best suite to design, code, and publish a very cool, engaging website. I do not know of any other software package that comes close. In my opinion Adobe tried and failed, (plus it costs a ton), Bill Gates crew is not even in the same game. The only challenge is the learning curve you will encounter, if you are not familiar with Macromedia's products. Now this may be a little presumptuous on my part, but I would go so far as to say if you are not using Dreamweaver and flash, you are not in the web development game seriously. I would guess that some of your efforts might have ended up on "Webpage's that [stink]" website. This is a tremendous value and you could make a career out of mastering anyone of the applications included in Macromedia Studio.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bogus software
I received CD-ROM that was not a used one as advertised, but a copy. Before trying to load it, I went to Macromedia's website to check the serial number and found that Macromedia didn't accept the number as valid. No response from customer service after one week of sending an email request for a refund.

5-0 out of 5 stars I switched from the other one
Yep there comes a time in one's life when they just have to give up on tools that are more trouble than doing it by hand. Yep I tried the other one to find that you had to by 'Publisher just to get it to the site. Then you find that they site has to be dedicated enough to have half the cone on it just to support what you cave composed. Well enough is enough.
Now this here Studio MX animal is great. Moet of the functions are contained in the product its self and very little support is needed by the web site provider. With the split screen you can get closer to the code. I wish there were more beginning templates but there is sufficient quantity to get you off the ground. The transfer of information from and to different sites is amazingly simple. I will not go into the details of all the marvelous cross-product integration and leading design tools just to say that if you can think about it, it is here.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
If you are a professional web designer, this is a must have. If you are a home user and want to design a personal site, this program will make it a lot easier than any other program.

It may look more confusing than Frontpage - but you have to get into it to see that it's actually much easier and offers so much more.

You also won't have "front-page" extension issues with the hosting companies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Are you seriuos?

5-0 out of 5 stars Flash 5 is the Samurai Sword of Tools!!!!!
Who am I? I am a website designer, corporate trainer and Flash 5 designer/creator. I am Microsoft certified, CTT certified, M CIW D, A+. I-Net+, Net+, IBM certified recently. I know my stuff. This program rules! Version 5 has increased its ease of use, the dynamics of ActionScript has blossomed 4 times over, and things have also become more simple and user friendly. If you thought Flash 4 was an awesome weapon, then version 5 will rock your world once you learn the new abilities. IT IS NOT BUGGY like the other review claims. I have had Flash 5 since it was first available. Has it crashed on me once or twice? Yes. Why? Well, sometimes it just happens. Computers arenot perfect. Out of the few times it happened, it was either my fault, or when I was trying to use another program within Flash 5. Flash 5 has also been updated with a patch. I doubt you will have any problems my friends. Freehand 9 DOES NOT weight this package down!!! Freehand 9 lets you mock up and layout websites quickly to show your clients a "working quickie example". This saves me time over and over again! It also lets me create nicely streamlined graphics to use within Flash 5. Creating them in Freehand first can be easier than in Flash sometimes, the tools are also a bit better. Together, they become a hurricane of creative power to be unleashed upon your competitors! ActionScript is taken to a new level too. Forget the ActionScript you knew in Flash 4. Childs' play!!! It is a whole new ball game. The concepts, layout and theory are still the same, but the new commands, and means of using the..especially the new "dot notation" system is incredibly easy and quick! Ignore the other reviews that pooh, pooh this product. If they were right, Macromedia wouldnot have a BEST SELLING and one of the BEST RATED vector graphics programs that all of us PRO designers use. Don't get this suite if all you want to do is create a web page for your kitty or puppy. DO get this if your career needs to go further! Best Wishes and check out my book reviews for Flash 5 tutorial books hereon Amazon.

1-0 out of 5 stars Flash is extremely buggy now
Flash 4 was the pinnacle of flash-dom. This version crashes all the time, and Macromedia has not offered a fix.

1-0 out of 5 stars Freehand drags this package down

I had hoped to come away with more than just a rudimentary knowledge of the product, but after several days of frustration, I gave up and picked up a copy of Illustrator. It seems much better! ... After Effects is a great program for creating effects for video. The best attribute that After Effects has is its ability to let you create your logo or image, etc., in PhotoShop and then import it as a composition so you can animate it. The caveat is, however, that AE is at times extremely complex, especially more so in the Production Bundles and from previous versions. Amazon.com Review

Director 8.5 Shockwave Studio is an essential and excitingupgrade for Web authors who need the latest 3-D capabilities, Flash, and RealMedia support. Version 8.5 of Macromedia's Director hasstrengthened the product's position as a flagship multimedia tool.

The sheer depth and power of Director 8.5 does not hinder beginners, who will find that the streamlined interface and library ofdrag-and-drop behaviors allow them to produce impressive results quickly. Themore experienced user will find that--with more than 800 new commandscovered in well-written documentation--Director's Lingo scriptinglanguage provides good detail and control over interaction anddelivery.

Director's new 3-D capabilities are based on Intel technology, and aregeared toward delivering the goods regardless of the user's connectionspeed. It does this by employing technology that automatically changesthe detail of 3-D objects depending on the user's bandwidth and thespeed of his or her computer.

Although Director doesn't really help you create 3-D models--you mustimport these from other third-party applications using the new W3Dformat--once in place, key frame and bones-based animation are employedto bring these models to life. In addition, there are a number ofpresupplied 3-D behaviors, particle effects, and an option to renderwith a flat, cartoon-style look. All these factors combine to giveDirector some powerful new moves that will undoubtedly be of enormousinterest to 3-D developers.

Director 8.5 supports two other important Web technologies that furtheradd to its versatility. RealMedia is now supported, allowing the authorto rotate, scale, and skew clips while they are playing. Flash supporthas been updated to version 5, and, with its improved integration, youcan now control Flash media within Director by using Lingo.

Other new and extremely useful features of Director 8.5 ShockwaveStudio include support for XML data and better multiuser serversupport. This includes new server-side scripting and an increase in thenumber of concurrent users to 2,000, which will enable rich andimmersive multiuser experiences.

Game developers and specialists in Web-based interaction willundoubtedly benefit from these new features, which now make Director anessential choice for multiuser, interactive, and online experiences.--John Bloor

aloha from Hawaii, so you're looking for ways to recoup your software investments. Or maybe you just want to build something really really kewl. Either way, this product is potentially the most important software to be released in the last 6 months.

As a software instructor, I can attest to the ease of use. Heck, using this software, I can teach you how to create a complete video conferencing and chat application in hours. Best of all, your target audience already has the necessary Flash player to view your finished work. The player shipped long before the software was released so anyone that upgraded their player in the last 6 months (approx) can use the application you build.

As a dot.com business owner for the last 6 years I can attest to the fact that companies are paying for the features this product allows you to build. Imagine building a complete video conferencing solution for a client in about a week. Delivering this sort of value is what has kept us in business and it will keep your customers coming back for more.

You can try out one of these applications I built for our local Macromedia User Group (mmhug.com) and see if it's kewl enough for you. The link to the application is in the news section.

Those of you learning web design or just starting out in Flash, need to learn this software. There's trial versions available to get you started. Best wishes with your designs... ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Macromedia Flash 5 and Macromedia Generator 2 Developer Edition together offer the complete solution for designing and automating high-impact Web site graphics. Flash is a popular choice for producing high-impact, low-bandwidth Web experiences, and Generator is the data-driven solution for automating Web site graphics. Flash provides a broad range of design, assembly, and animation tools. Within the Flash user interface, Generator authoring extensions offer predefined objects like charts, tickers, tables, and lists--enabling you to design your site easily with data-driven graphics. Generator avoids costly static-content updates that require you to go into the authoring environment, make the updates, and push the pages live. When you modify content in your data source, the new information is reflected in your Flash Web site automatically, which drastically reduces maintenance time. Generator takes content, images, sounds, behaviors, and information that are stored in data sources, and uses variables to update a Web site automatically, and without additional engineering resources. Generator makes updates to your Web page when a user visits the Web site and requests personalized information, and when a change occurs to the database of information that's shown on your Web site. The flexible nature of Generator templates gives you the ability to customize the user's experience without having to recreate your graphics multiple times. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Freehand drags this package down
The tool-heavy approach to this software makes it very difficult to actually do anything with the software. I had hoped to come away with more than just a rudimentary knowledge of the product, but after several days of frustration, I gave up and picked up a copy of Illustrator. It seems much better! ... Amazon.com Review

Without Flash, Web surfing would be a much less dynamic experience. Andany Flash developer can tell you that without Macromedia Director, Flashpresentations would be years behind the brilliant productions peppering the Webtoday. Director 8.5 Shockwave Studio introduces a powerful new set of 3-Dauthoring tools, unleashing a whole new dimension for multimedia Web developers.

Employing 3-D graphics technology developed at Intel, developers can import 3-Dgraphics with textures and animated elements (from 3D Studio MAX, for instance),and apply creative new ways to animate objects and text--from spinning icons toSuperman-style logo fly-thrus--on three axes. A Particles System debuts a rangeof special effects: smoke, water, fire, explosions, you name it. Withcustomizable lighting and camera effects, this package delivers the goods on the3-D development front. Naturally, the 3-D presentations are fully scalable, ensuring that viewers with systems ranging from chug-a-lugs to the latestgigahertz blazers can enjoy the show.

For e-commerce, online game, and animated entertainment developers, the upgradesare more than worth the bucks--especially given the wonderful collection of newproduction capabilities. Director 8.5 offers support for XML data, allowing foreven more dynamic Web pages, and the new Shockwave Multicast 3 tool dishes upserver-side scripting and UDP support. This strong community-building tool nowsupports twice as many simultaneous users--up to 2,000 at once.

A true gem of a new feature is the seamless support for RealVideo and RealAudiodirectly within Shockwave content.

Director 8.5 is topped off with an improved publish feature that smoothly buildspresentations for the Web, CD-ROM, or even DVD. For having such powerful newcapabilities, Director's interface remains surprisingly intuitive. Though manyof the advanced effects may thwart impatient newbies, earnest novices won't havetoo much trouble creating professional-looking presentations. And once the prosget warmed up with this necessary upgrade, expect to see some brilliant newWeb-based 3-D games and animated movies hitting a browser near you. --EricTwelker ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant but doesn't play well with others
Director is a powerful bit of software but I have a few complaints:
1. It will make your entire system run slower - even when it isn't open. This ugly bear of a program works at a very low level in your software and can make applications like MS outlook malfunction or run so slowly you'll think they're not working.

Of course if you have a machine to dedicate to developing your director projects, this is not a problem. This was the solution I came by to use it on projects that required shockwave for work. But if your computer is the one stop workhorse of your business, maybe this isn't the best thing to do to it.
(I have run Director on Windows XP, 2000 and 98 and found the same performance problems - but least problematic on Win 2000 - the macintosh version may not have the same problem.)

2. Lingo is a bizarre language to learn. Lingo is the scripting language you must use to unlock the full power of Director. But for anyone familiar with other programming/scripting languages like C++ javascript, or Macromedia's Actionscript for Flash MX will find the mixed syntax confusing and hard to learn.

If this is the only language you ever plan to learn, then go ahead, do it. But frankly with a similar investment of time and energy ou could teach yourself C++ or Java and create the same sort of projects you could in Director - plus many many more- and you multiuser projects could run on UNIX Servers.

In short, for most projects that people create in Shockwave, I would recommend doing them in Macromedia's excellent Flash MX. For more elaborate projects, do them in c++ or Java.

Until Director tosses away the last of it's old stage metaphor lingo and replaces it with true object oriented programming it will remain an aging dinosaur losing ground against newer programs and technologies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Software you can create anything.
This is probably the best software in the world, for one reason only. You can easily create other multimedia software with it. Games for kids, adults, presentations for the boss, greeting cards, web based applications. The user interface is a bit difficult to get used to because it has its own programming language. You can click and drag, AVIs, MPGs, JPGs, GIFs, WAVs or any other file to create whatever you want with it. The big downfall about this software is that Macromedia comes out with a different version of the Shockwave studio once every three months! So you could pay for this, then another will come out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy yet powerful
I used the previous incarnation of Director when it was still on the Amiga (a very very long time ago) and recently, for a new job, I began to work with it as it has been rebuilt now. I was surprised that it was just as easy to use as before, but it was still deep enough that you could really get into it and get some truly amazing and powerful results from it. I would reccomend it to any developer, despite the high pricetag its much more than worth it for the use you will definately get out of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool!
ha! another great piece of work from the nationally acclaimed company of macromedia! It rocks! a little bit expensive, but very much worth it! you can do ANYTHING!!!!! ... Read more
