Sales Rank: 10574

Amazon.com Product Description

Headline Studio 1.0 has all the necesary tools for creating compelling GIF animations in one streamlined application. Here are some of its features:Dynamic key-point animation: Until now, animated banners have been built frame by frame using one or two separate applications, then "stitched" together into a GIF animation using yet another application. Headline Studio changes the approach by letting you create an animation first using key points, then rendering it out to a GIF animation file--all in one integrated application. Headline Studio lets you do the creative work up front and take care of the technical work at the end.

Split text: Headline Studio has the ability to split animated text into individual words, characters, or lines. You can also determine how much overlap from word to word, or letter to letter, happens with these animated parameters. And splitting text is a simple click once the entire animation has been created.

Color palettes: Choose from different color palettes, such as the built-in Web-safe colors. You also can import color palettes from Painter or PhotoShop, or create custom GIF palettes.

Real-time animation previews: Headline Studio gives you the ability to see your key-point animation and make changes on the fly. You can preview the GIF file instantly and see how it will look with a specified frame rate and color palette. If the file size is too large, simply adjust the frames and colors, then render the file again instantly.

Bandwidt preview: Preview how your animation will look when viewed from a 28.8 Kbps modem, an ISDN line, even a cable modem. Instant bandwidth previews let you tailor your animation to every viewing audience easily.

Import-export index: Headline Studio 1.0 imports GIF, TIFF, and JPEG files natively. Additionally, it supports PhotoShop file-format plug-ins within its plug-ins folder. Headline Studio exports standard GIF89a files, compatible with all standard Web browsers. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Fireworks, Photoshop, Fireworks, Photoshop. If you've been researchingWeb-graphics software, these two names are likely rattling around your headincessantly. So which program is right for you? Well, while Photoshop wranglesthe title of best overall high-end image editor year after year, it's still notthe most robust solution for Web graphics--that claim belongs to Fireworks 4.0.Dedicated to the Web-graphics world, each new Fireworks release strengthens itshold on its domain (no pun intended). And if Dreamweaver is your Web editor ofchoice, uniting the two programs will make you a very happy matchmakerindeed.

Fireworks' strengths lie in its focus on the creation and optimization ofbitmapped and vector Web graphics. Files are easily integrated into MacromediaFlash and Dreamweaver, and importing/exporting Adobe PhotoShop and Illustratorfiles is a breeze, especially with the program's improved layer-mask handlingand a new Color Fill Live effect. Version 4 rolls out a new interface thatFlash, Dreamweaver, and FreeHand users will recognize. Tabbed menus allow forcustomization and keep the screen tidy while organizing elements. New tools foradding interactive elements--rollovers, navigation bars, and pop-up menus--are avery welcome sight. And a Live Animation feature creates frame-based GIFanimations, using symbols, instances, and tweening features familiar to Flashusers. With built-in HTML and JavaScript capabilities, version 4 delivers thegoods to the Web-graphics design community.

Like we mentioned, Dreamweaver users will fully realize Fireworks' fullpotential. These two programs assimilate perfectly, creating the most powerfulWeb-editing suite available today. --Eric Twelker--This review refers to the Windows version. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything is editable, LOVELY
Macromedia has done a great job with this product; it is a comprehensive graphic creation package that works with both vector/based and pixel/based editing capabilities. Contrary to what all designers/developers think, FIREWORKS 4 integrates perfectly with Macromedia dreamweaver AND Macromedia Director.here are some of the things you can do with fireworks 4: *You can save a file as an editable png format and import it from director. You can go back to edit it using fireworks every time. Which is great, because now, we can consider that director has a developed vector/bitmap editor * Fireworks 4 gives a new meaning to the word wysiwyg (what you see is what you get) web creation tool. Rollovers are as easy to create as doing a drag and drop. And popup menus are very easy to create. You don't have to think about the programming. * Fireworks is a tool especially conceived for web graphics; hence, you only work with 72 dpi images and you can always preview them in the browser. without getting too much concerned about optimizing. * Fireworks is a very big boost in productivity, whether you work on Director or on Dreamweaver. it handles all the calculations and saving for you. so you don't have each time to calculate the image sizes and mull over how to compress it. * EVERYTHING in fireworks is editable and nothing you do is committing (like in other graphic creation software), you can always edit the fill of you objects, re-define the gradation inside, change the stroke, effect and fill. The texture, the transparency and even the texture of the stroke. Which could come very much in handy when one is creating rollovers. In other words.. Fireworks 4 is a great program to have if you want to increase your productivity in all that has to do with creating graphics for the screen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the best VR tool!
There are quite a number of pano stitchers out there, but nothing approaches the ease of use, elegance, options and results of QTVR AS. Typical Apple: simple to use, clean interface, and a quality product. Stitching is excellent and saving options plentiful. Don't think that QTVR AS is only good for panos, though -- it makes wonderful objects and can also create full walkthroughs, also with grace and simplicity. A wonderfully finished product, despit being just version 1.0.1, but there really is nothing that needs to be changed, so why have another version? Well, one drawback -- it's not been upgraded to run under MacOS X, other than in Classic. Great pity!

1-0 out of 5 stars QuickTime VR Authoring Studio versus RealViz Stitcher
Is RealViz Stitcher worth (the money against) Apple's QuickTime VR Authoring Studio's? The first tech support call you make to Apple will cost you ($). Yes, that is ($) if you want to ask anything other than an installation question. Also, the software "chokes" - Apple's tech support term - on any high resolution image. It is not useful for anyone wanting to make prints of panoramas. Apple told me when I called pre-sales that they offered 90 days tech support - normal in the industry. But I neglected to ask what does that 90 days cover. It only covers installation. Forget it if you have any other questions. QuickTime VR Authoring Studio also does not support the Nikon Editor version of .jpg. So if you have a Nikon digital camera, be prepared to convert everything to the archaic pict format for this software. Yes, it will accept a .tif or photoshop .jpg, but it's internal process converts to a pict and if you want any semblance of quality you will need to convert to pict first. Do yourself a favor and avoid this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars QTVR authoring studio still a best bet!
An update is sorely missing but of course the next one will be OS X compatible - till then MAcOS 8,X and 9.X QTVR creators would be wise to buy a copy of QTVR-AS. This is one tool that makes it possible to combine a variety of non-aligned images into a workable object or panorama. This heightened degree of control over diverse input is very necessary when one starts building QTVRs for art type projects. When VRWORX fails to build an object or things just cannot be lined up correctly - Authoring studio will do the job and do it well!! Any time apple wants some user input on how to improve this product they can be contact me! i love it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stable and powerful
First, you should know that my perspective is not that of a coder - it's primarily of a designer (although sometimes I do dig into the code a bit).

I've worked with a number of web development packages, including Frontpage, and have found the Dreamweaver series (Ultradev and now Dreamweaver MX) the absolute best choice for anyone serious about developing interactive web sites. It doesn't require any coding experience for many basic design/development goals (although of course the more complex your site is, the better it will be to work in the code).

The software is extremely stable on Windows 2000, and easy enough to use within minutes of installation. I'm amazed at the power of the package - the advanced features take a while longer to learn, but leave you plenty of room to grow.

Beyond the software itself, Macromedia has a very helpful exchange on its site which allows you to add to the functionality of MX by installing "extensions". These extensions extend the functionality of MX and make it even easier to add interactivity.

Bottom line: Strongly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sonner or later, you're going to need Dreamweaver
Dreamweaver is quite simply the de facto standard for WYSIWYG web development. If you are still stuck with Frontpage, GoLive or any other tool, it is time to seriously think of switching. Reason being that the HTML as we know it today is a lot more than the tag soup people are used to (attn: Frontpage and GoLive users) -- it includes a good knowledge of CSS, XHTML, quite frequently even intermediate to advanced levels of JavaScript.

Having used and tried a bunch of alternatives, because DW is sometimes a memory hog (my only quibble with the tool), I am now convinced there is NO HTML tool that comes even close in terms of sheer functionality, period.

The only real contender really was GoLive but the code that is generated by GL is nothing to write home about. DW's siteupload and maintenance features, the incredibly optimized JavaScript, the XHTML 1.0 support built in (and what a treat this is!), the choice of your familiar DW4 interface or the new MX suite look and feel etc etc -- in almost every department, DW is a clear winner. Speaking of the new interface, you'll find after a bit that the MX interface is actually quite efficient -- dockable panels, the new tabbed Insert toolbar, integrated file browsing and the revamped context-sensitive Properties panel.

But where DW really shines, and serious web developers listen up, is its ability to encourage people to be comfortable with advanced code editing within the tool. Features such as "code hinting" which automatically displays appropriate options as you type (usually found among text based code editing tools such as Ultraedit and Homesite), a Snippets panel for storing common pieces of code and some greatly expanded reference material -- the new emphasis is on the tag-based nature of web authoring with a HomeSite-inspired Tag Inspector for viewing an editable list of all tags and their attributes in the current document, and a Tag Chooser and Tag Editor to help you add new ones.

Users of UltraDev 6 (which I was never a fan of) will be happy to note that it is now a seamless part of the core DW program with features such as the new Site Setup wizard and dedicated Database, Bindings and Server Behaviour panels making it relatively straightforward for users to move from creating static HTML to producing server-generated dynamic pages.

What is particularly impressive about the Dreamweaver MX implementation is how broad its server-side support is. As well as ASP and JSP, new support has been added for PHP, ASP.NET, and ColdFusion. Users of the last two server platforms or JSP can also take advantage of the exciting new area of XML-based Web services. Thanks to Dreamweaver MX's dedicated Components panel this becomes a simple task of drag, drop and customize.

All told, this is a top-notch tool and will be coin well-spent one way or another. If you are serious about your work, you could get "TopStyle 3" (a fantastic CSS editor) and "HTML Tidy" and "A Real Validator" for making sure your code is squeaky clean.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dreamweaver MX 2004 - good for PHP, bad for people
I am a big fan of Dreamweaver 4 and have been trying MX 2004 because my DW4 broke. All i can say is it's a great for writing PHP scripts and not much else. Once i switch to design view, i am confronted with stupid things like the cut and paste feature messesing with my code.

If you Google the phrase "Dreamweaver 4 compatible editable regions", you'll find a hack useful in helping all who still stick to the old DW4 template syntex.

1-0 out of 5 stars Macromedia...you've lost my business.
Macromedia...you've lost my business. Other reviewers are right...Dreamweaver has become bloat-ware with too many features no true web-professional needs.

Once upon a time I loved Dreamweaver. It was a great code editor with a simple to use FTP client. But, I've had enough; Dreamweaver MX crashes on me 4X a day on average. I'm going in search of a clean and simple code editor. If I can find one that has some kind of code complete feature for XHTML, CSS and ASP.net, so much the better.

Furthermore, thanks to WYSIWYG editors, I fear that too many developers out there don't really know what they are doing anymore. If you're a novice, here is my advice: learn to hand-code XHTML & CSS for your front-end web development and embrace W3C web standards. I'm serious...do this and you will become a very valuable resource...maybe I'll hire you someday.

Always remember this: the code editor is not your tool; the code is.

1-0 out of 5 stars n00b prog
DW MX is a WYSIMOLWIG (what you see is more or less what you get) program, for n00bs who want to make a website. I'm a proffesional coder (html, php, asp, js, cgi, perl, css and i can also wark with c(++), vbs and pascal), and this program sux. If you want to make a website, go get yourself a book about html, later php and asp. If you make a website yourself in pure html, you exactly know what you're doing opposite to dreamweaver. I only use dreamweaver sometimes, to look up a tag, testing a php script or testing something on my html pages.
Conclusion: dreamweaver is defenetly NOT worth its price actually, it would be a nice program for quick testing if it was free. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing product...
Macromedia has outdone themselves with this product. Creating rollovers, especially, is now a painless and really cool "drag and drop" process. This even applies to creating popup-menus. You can create popup menus on the first day you use this product. They have included the entire Java source code to do these. Be warned though: This is a big Java file, 25k or so. I don't know enough about JavaScript to know whether the entire file is included in your web pages with popup menus, but if it is, this will add a huge burden on each page (maybe it's a server-side function? I just don't know).

With the addition of selective JPEG compression, the need for Photoshop or other image-editing tools is on the wane.

The other really cool thing is the roundtrip to DreamWeaver (4 or UltraDev 4) is now VERY SEAMLESS. I couldn't believe how great this feature worked.

There are many, many other features that are either upgraded, added, or otherwise reorganized to make more sense.

You will love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fireworks works for me
I am surprised at the negative reviews. I have been using Dreamweaver and Fireworks for a couple of years and find Fireworks very useful in creating web graphics. Fireworks 4 is a substantial improvement over 3. I teach DW and FW basics to colleagues where I work and find the tutorials very useful in preparing lessons. Since I was familiar with Photoshop before I started using Fireworks, perhaps I din't notice the problems mentioned, and yes, I did use the Quickstart book and also found the tutorial in Fireworks very smooth. It's not an easy program but it's worth learning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a Photoshop or Paintshop Pro wanna be!
Fireworks 4 is not a Photoshop wanna be. It's sole purpose is the design, layout and implementation of fantastic websites. Fireworks is better suited than photoshop for web graphics.

Why, you ask? because it uses vector graphics to maitain editablity for all time. This means if a client does not like a color or font style, you can use Firework's find and replace to update your enitre set of files! Fireworks also allows you to save buttons you create in a library that can be used over and over.

You want to use Photoshop along side Fireworks to do any bitmap editing. Firworks does have a nice set of bitmap tools, but let Photoshop handle your serious photographic work. In closing, remember: Photoshop is a BITMAP editor. It does not allow you the same FLEXABILITY as Fireworks will. Fireworks 4 is BOTH a bitmap & vector program. So when it comes to creating the best looking websites in the least amount of time, look no further!

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal
Truly an excellent piece of brainpower. Macromedia is king. Since Adobe's bugged Illustrator, crappy version of LiveMotion, and worthless Photoshop updates are withering, expect Macromedia to have an almost monopoly-like view on all of it's great products.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cookie cutter
This is a big disappointment, because its exactly like competing products out there like Paint Shop Pro 7.0 and the Adobe Photo Shop. Same fuctions, same filters, effects and layer function. However this software is much cheaper than Adobe Photo Shop so that might be a good thing. The only useful function I have found that sets Fireworks apart from competing products is its integration into Macromedia Dreamweaver (an HTML editor). With such great innovations as a very easy batch editor, that lets you select whole directory and edit the size, the brightness, and file type of the output images. Very useful for people with picture websites. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Since Macromedia launched Flash in 1996, it has grown into the de factostandard for development and delivery of high-impact, visually rich, interactiveWeb content. Flash MX promises a similar generational shift to the oneexperienced when Flash 5's enhanced ActionScript introduced an unprecedenteddegree of interactivity to the Web.

The most exciting new features in this version are those aimed at e-contentdevelopers and programmers. Integration with application servers such asColdFusion MX and Microsoft's .NET and Internet protocols like HTML, WebTV, andWAP make it possible to deliver Flash content to a range of platforms--from PCsto PlayStations to mobile phones.

But Flash MX also offers plenty to those who aren't part of a large team ofdesigners and programmers developing corporate sites. Novice users can takeadvantage of a range of prebuilt, customizable components, including scrollbars, buttons, list and combo boxes, and QuickStart templates for presentations, photo albums, ads, and more, making it possible to achieve great resultsquickly.

The Flash MX interface is now consistent with Dreamweaver and Fireworks. Nestedlayer folders and improved cursor feedback for frame adjustment make thetimeline more manageable, and the context-sensitive properties panel andcollapsing, dockable panels reduce screen clutter considerably. Vector drawingtools, one of Flash's weaknesses, have been largely overlooked, but there is anew Free Transform tool, which combines rotate, scale, and skew options. Video, another Flash weak spot, has fared much better with the inclusion of theSorensen Spark video codec. Users can import a variety of formats, includingMPEG, DV, and QuickTime. In addition, users can animate and script AVI and videoclip objects in the same way as bit maps, even using them on a mask layer.

Flash MX is backwards-compatible with version 5 (meaning users can publishversion 5 SWF files, although MX SWF files require the MX player), removing theonly argument for not upgrading. Those not yet convinced of the merits of Flashneed only look around. --Ken McMahon ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this program
I was hoping to purchase the commercial version of this program because the 2004 version isn't compatible with my Computer. I'm very familiar with this program's features though. I recommend over the 2004 edition any day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Flash 5
Well, it's not exactly the most SIMPLE program to use, I don't care who you are, it just isn't. Even so it's better than version 5, and no other program that makes SWF's comes close to the features of Flash MX.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent program made even better!
I'll grant you, the learning curve on Flash is steep. Once you get past that, Flash is a mandatory program in today's web environment. Now, with easier to learn functions and drag-and-drop ease, Flash MX can take it to the next level. You can incorporate QuickTime videos. You'll see improved workflow with more informative, easier to use menus. You can incorporate dynamic elements like never before. My personal favorites are the little touches that Macromedia made to just make the everyday tasks easier to do. Plus, the layer folders option is a stroke of genius (even if Adobe got there first). All-in-all, the first upgrade in years is well worth the wait. Also, it runs under both OS9.1 and OS10.1. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Flash 5 is the Samurai Sword of Tools!!!!!
Who am I? I am a website designer, corporate trainer and Flash 5 designer/creator. I am Microsoft certified, CTT certified, M CIW D, A+. I-Net+, Net+, IBM certified recently. I know my stuff. This program rules! Version 5 has increased its ease of use, the dynamics of ActionScript has blossomed 4 times over, and things have also become more simple and user friendly. If you thought Flash 4 was an awesome weapon, then version 5 will rock your world once you learn the new abilities. IT IS NOT BUGGY like the other review claims. I have had Flash 5 since it was first available. Has it crashed on me once or twice? Yes. Why? Well, sometimes it just happens. Computers arenot perfect. Out of the few times it happened, it was either my fault, or when I was trying to use another program within Flash 5. Flash 5 has also been updated with a patch. I doubt you will have any problems my friends. Freehand 9 DOES NOT weight this package down!!! Freehand 9 lets you mock up and layout websites quickly to show your clients a "working quickie example". This saves me time over and over again! It also lets me create nicely streamlined graphics to use within Flash 5. Creating them in Freehand first can be easier than in Flash sometimes, the tools are also a bit better. Together, they become a hurricane of creative power to be unleashed upon your competitors! ActionScript is taken to a new level too. Forget the ActionScript you knew in Flash 4. Childs' play!!! It is a whole new ball game. The concepts, layout and theory are still the same, but the new commands, and means of using the..especially the new "dot notation" system is incredibly easy and quick! Ignore the other reviews that pooh, pooh this product. If they were right, Macromedia wouldnot have a BEST SELLING and one of the BEST RATED vector graphics programs that all of us PRO designers use. Don't get this suite if all you want to do is create a web page for your kitty or puppy. DO get this if your career needs to go further! Best Wishes and check out my book reviews for Flash 5 tutorial books hereon Amazon.

1-0 out of 5 stars Flash is extremely buggy now
Flash 4 was the pinnacle of flash-dom. This version crashes all the time, and Macromedia has not offered a fix.

1-0 out of 5 stars Freehand drags this package down
The tool-heavy approach to this software makes it very difficult to actually do anything with the software. I had hoped to come away with more than just a rudimentary knowledge of the product, but after several days of frustration, I gave up and picked up a copy of Illustrator. It seems much better! ... Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX is a topflight Web editor for dynamic sitesas well as static pages. Dreamweaver's excellent visual tools generate code thatworks across all the leading Web browsers, winning it the respect ofprofessionals. Its availability on the Mac as well as Windows is another strongfeature for designers. The product is also extensible, with a huge range ofthird-party add-ons available from Macromedia's Web site, many of them free ofcharge. There is great support for Internet standards, including cascading stylesheets, XHTML, and accessibility features. Built-in validating mechanisms makeit easy to check a page, and everything is highly configurable so you canspecify the standards you want to support.

This is a visual editor, which means you can create and edit a Web page byselecting items such as tables, forms, and images from a tabbed palette. TheProperties panel lets you specify details such as borders, styles, andhyperlinks, and you can also use the visual editor for frames and layers. Manydesigners also like to edit the underlying HTML, and this is where DreamweaverMX comes into its own. It supports either a pure code view or a split view thatlets you click seamlessly between the code and visual editors. A lot of thefeatures previously found in HomeSite, Macromedia's text-based Web editor, arenow integrated into Dreamweaver, including pop-up code hints, a snippets panelthat lets you keep handy pieces of code for reuse, and a tag chooser that letsyou grab the right tag from a list. An O'Reilly tag reference is built in.

Dreamweaver's template support deserves special mention. Templates give you aquick start with a number of predesigned pages. In Dreamweaver MX, they can alsobe used to lock down areas of the page, so that contributors can create and edita story without disturbing the design. Templates can be nested so that changesto an underlying template ripple through the pages that use it for powerfulsite-wide updates.

Macromedia used to market a product called Dreamweaver UltraDev, which allowedfor rapid development of Web applications featuring online databases, memberlogin, and other server-side elements. In Dreamweaver MX, this capability isbuilt in. It has also been extended, adding support for ASP.NET and PHP as wellas ColdFusion, JavaServer pages, and traditional ASP. Nonspecialists will findthemselves able to build rich dynamic pages, while the integrated code editormakes this a capable development product as well. In fact, Dreamweaver MX hasalso replaced ColdFusion Studio as the primary development tool for ColdFusionMX. It is a uniquely flexible package.

Overall, it's hard to find fault with Dreamweaver MX. It's true that itscomplexity and professional features make it harder to pick up than some rivalproducts. The abundance of panels and options can be confusing, and ahigh-resolution screen is required. In addition, the Studio MX products, whichinclude Dreamweaver, are a better value for those who need more than one of theMX series. However, this takes nothing away from the excellence of Dreamweaveras the first-choice tool for professionals. --Tim Anderson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Much better than I expected it to be!
I have been a user of Dreamweaver through versions 3 and 4. When I redesigned my site to make extensive use of CSS, I found that DW4 had a difficult time rendering the pages and would often crash. So, reading that MX had better CSS support, I upgraded based solely on that.

Indeed, Dreamweaver MX handles my CSS-styled pages with aplomb. But to my delight, it adds many features which I have found invaluable, such as "Snippets" (a library of code fragments you can insert anywhere), the ability to "cloak" folders so that they are not included when synchronizing to the server (invaluable for log and statistics folders on the server), the FTP log, a much improved style sheet editor, a nicer and more configurable workspace, and much, much more.

Dreamweaver MX is a delight to use and has made development and maintenance of my web sites even easier than in previous versions. If you have an earlier version of Dreamweaver, MX is definitely worth the upgrade. (And if you don't have Dreamweaver, you're missing out on what I think is the world's best web site design and maintenance product.)

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the better editors
I've used FrontPage, FirstPage 2000, and other site design packages. MX is THE most comprehensive site design product on the market to date. With integrated Flash, PHP, ASP, JSP, and others support, it makes site design easier. Too bad they don't support the processing of forms; hopefully that will come with time.

From a CIW certified professional.

5-0 out of 5 stars analyse your need before you upgrade
In terms of pure dreamweaver functionality, this version doesnt have any ground breaking advances, but by the inclusion of ultra-devs data driven dynamic site development tools, dreamweaver and ultra-dev have finally merged into one product dreamweaver mx.

Having been a user of both Dreamweaver and Ultra-dev since their arrival on the pro web design scene, this represents a big change in one respect in that data driven web sites are now being delivered into the hands of every web site producer with the same product they use to design simple pages.

The most exiting thing for me is the new PHP feature, and in this i find Macromedia continuing in their trend of offering what their users are most hungry for, now i have no excuse for not learning PHP.

In terms of changes to the actual core design product, i have been happily switching between dreamweaver 4 and mx, and theres nothing in mx that i cant live without, obviously im not here refering to the dynamic data side of things here.

thankfully you can work with mx and make it look like the old dreamweaver interface, im currently working with the new integrated interface, and it all looks a bit frontpage to me, ill give it a chance though, admittedly it is slighly more efficient, but its just starting to look a lot less like a design tool, and a lot more like a developers tool.

Of the new features the ability to creare code snippets is pretty handy, but nothing too revolutionary, and the tag-inspector does speed up speed of changes to the code minded, but again nothing very new.

if your using dreamweaver for mainly design orientated web production, its possible the new features may not be enough to sway the upgrade, one big plus is the support for all the new and emergent technologies and standards, xml, xhtml, and as i mentioned earlier PHP on the dynamic side.

Dreamweaver is still the leading professional web design tool, it will reward all the learning by giving an easy to use cutting edge web development tool. The huge community of developers and users who provide countless extensions to dreamweaver allow easy adaption to whatever tasks it may be put.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even great for novices.......if you take the time
At first glance, the Dreamweaver [DW] interface seems very complicated but after using it for a while, the interface is very intuitative. I was using FrontPage [FP] for web design, but I couldn't control the layout of the tables on the page. I am not a pro. With DW I could! The properties of each element can be shown in a little box on the screen [a improvement over R mouse clicking on then clicking on the properties tag in FP]. The eye dropper icon works anywhere on the the open program - I could grab colors off the menu bar!

Not all was rosy at first.........I installed a demo on two different computers and both computers locked up when using ...it seemed to be very unstable. So I looked to tech support and could not find anyone to call.....so I entered the support forum and posted what happened. My answer came within 24 hours in a dialogue with another user. After that the program ran relatively flawless. A note.....this program can consume a lot of resources on a Win 9.x/Me system and anti-virus software will cause it to crash - SOLUTION: turn your anti-virus software off and make sure you don't have a lot of unnecessary background programs running........give it lots of breathing room!

FP is used a lot because it has a relatively easy look and feel but once you get used to FP, the quirks and limitations begin to show. In DW if you are interesting in seeing how code is formed, just switch to the Code/view and 2 windows open - your WYSIWYG window and the HTML code above! Great!

Conclusion: Download the Demo from Macromedia - don't be put off by the seemingly complicated interface, play around and see for yourself. Then buy it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Problems with Livemotion 2
First let's agree that Livemotion will always be playing catch up with Flash, as Macromedia controls the SWF specification. However, I believe when SVG becomes a more important Web standard, Livemotion will transition to support that SVG as its primary format.

Primary Pro:
Superior animation timeline (compared to Flash) and ability to import motion and elements from After Effects. "Integration" with other Adobe applications.

Primary Cons:
Converts TOO MANY objects and effects into bitmaps. No line styles! Animation import from After Effects is limited, with MOST work being converted to fat bitmaps.

The limited After Effects import capability and lack of line styles can be frustrating at times (ok, most of the time). Yet even with these restrictions, I find Livemotion a more comfortable environment to work in (I am bred on Illustrator and PhotoShop) than Flash. If you use PhotoShop, Illustrator, and/or After Effects, you should really download the demo and visit the Adobe Website to utilize the freely available Livemotion streaming video tutorials.

5-0 out of 5 stars Second to None.
I almost couldn't believe how easy it is to learn Flash animation until I tried Adobe LiveMotion 2! You've got to be a Flash MX student first to really appreciate how Adobe made a powerful, easier alternative to authoring Flash movies. This is not to put down Flash MX which has superb qualities of its own. But as far as ease of Flash animation is concerned, LiveMotion 2 is second to none!

It's more intuitive. There are no esoteric routines to memorize, like long-winded rule on symbols convertion. In LiveMotion 2, you draw, drag, scale, or change the color of your objects to your heart's content directly in the composition window without worrying about symbolism or motion guides. LiveMotion takes care of the behind-the-scenes routines so you can concentrate on your composition.

There are no Lilliputian timeline and frames to hurt your eyes. You would rejoice at LiveMotion's cool, more visible object-timeline. You'll find it laid out like a control center, so using it would feel like second nature to you. You just toggle the properties you want to appear. Dazzling effects (if that's what you want) are just a breeze in LiveMotion 2.

Ah, but I can't say all of it's benefits! It's like Adobe really listened to the pained voices of many learners who had to struggle the steep learning curve of Flash. This software spared users from having to deal with convoluted rules in Flash authoring. The result is a simple, powerful Flash composition program that is as easy to learn as it is natural! You've got to try LiveMotion 2 for yourself to see what I mean! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Slower and buggier than previous versions, if more powerful.
On the good side, we finally have OS X versions of these mainstay web design apps (Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash); on the bad side, they are so buggy that one wonders if OS 9 was really that bad at all. Overall, Dreamweaver on my G4/733 feels MUCH slower than 4.01 did on a G3/333.

For example, the behavior of dragging the panels on the right side is very inconsistant. E.g., when attempting to resize the CSS panel to be longer to show more styles in my file, the cursor often does not turn into the double-headed arrow to indicate dragability; or the cursor disappears completely; dragging sometimes works, but more often doesn't. Or, when in code view, dragging across text to select results in a nasty redraw problem, with the code flashing on and off in rapid succession until you've stopped dragging. It's like the document is having an epilectic seizure. And why haven't they put in a simple window split function? BBEdit has had this for years. They boast about how bit-chin' their HTML code view is, but jeeze, it leaves a lot to be desired (and no, I don't think switching to BBEdit should be a solution to that; I think Macromedia should do more than a half-baked job on the code editor, and then most of us wouln't need to bother with BBEdit). Or, in the Style Sheet edit window, styles are unordered, making it very hard to find a particular style.

And basic functions like launching the app, quitting, opening a file, opening the Site view, saving as, and so forth, are S - L - O - W. It's just a drag to use this software. We should be damanding far more from our application creators like Macromedia.

5-0 out of 5 stars WYSIWYG is what the Mac is famous for.
Dreamweaver has been my choice for web editing since I figured out what I was doing. I started with Adobe PageMill, so the logical step should have been GoLive. But, I had a choice and Dreamweaver won out.

Combining the functionality of Dreamweaver, and the dynamic engine of UltraDev, MX completes this program's journey to what the web should be. Roundtrip editing for Flash MX and Fireworks MX as well, make these programs a designer's dream suite.

Macromedia has made me a fan for life with the latest updates. Fully compatible with both OS X and OS 9. (This review is based on the pre-release download version.) ... Read more
