Dreamweaver UltraDev is an enhanced version of Macromedia'sleading Web-authoring tool. The standout additional feature is dynamiccontent, which is when pages have live links to databases or othertypes of server-side scripting. Most products of this type requireextensive manual coding, but UltraDev has an extensive library ofbuilt-in scripts, called Server Behaviors, that allow even moderatelysophisticated sites to be built with little or no code. Version 4 lookssimilar to its predecessor, but includes important changes that make itmore complete and easier to use.

One of the best new features is the split code and design view, whichlets you edit either the code or the visual design and see changesinstantly echoed between them. There is also built-in security, so youcan create login procedures and password-protected sites. Finally, theLive Objects wizards automatically create page elements to handlecommon tasks, such as a master/detail page set, or forms to insert andupdate records.

UltraDev supports three kinds of server-side scripting: Active ServerPages, JavaServer Pages, and Cold Fusion. Unfortunately, it does notsupport PHP, which is popular on Linux and Unix servers, althoughbecause UltraDev is extensible, there may be some third-party add-ins.The features for the three models are similar but not identical, although in every case there is excellent database support. Its greatstrength is that you can focus on designing your pages and let UltraDevhandle the data access code. You can even display live data at designtime, making it easier to get exactly the right appearance.

Everything in Dreamweaver is also in UltraDev, so this is the idealpackage for Web authors who need to add dynamic content with a minimumof fuss. --Tim Anderson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply THE best web dev combination
DreamWeaver Rocks. Fireworks Rocks. Together they make for a spectacular web design/development combination.

Dreamweaver is packed with features for the beginner through advanced web developer; it's easy and intuitive to use. It may take you a while to learn all the capabilities, but with each successive feature you discover and master, the development process becomes easier and faster.

Fireworks is the best in class web graphics software. It integrates very well with DreamWeaver. Creating animated GIFs is a snap, as is image optimization (file compression), image map creation, and exploring full tables (HTML and all!) for use in DreamWeaver.

You simply cannot go wrong with this package. Photoshop still has its place, but if you focus exclusively on the web and don't need to do exquisite image editing this bundle is all you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome
I've been doing web development since 1996 and, to be honest, I fought tooth and nail against giving up Windows Notepad as my web development tool of choice. Microsoft FrontPage really ruined web development software for me and I pretty much vowed to avoid such applications in the future. Fortunately, my boss insisted that I use Dreamweaver and even sent me off to classes to learn the nuts and bolts. And now I'm hooked.

Dreamweaver is simply awesome and I can't imagine ever going back. Whether your a novice or professional, you'll come to love Dreamweaver's simple interface and ability to tackle otherwise tedious tasks -- such as Cascading Style Sheets, tables, layers -- with ease. Adding Flash, Shockwave or Java is as simple as it can possibly be. I took classes on Dreamweaver, but only because my boss insisted. The software is pretty easy to learn, though those with web development experience will have a fuller understanding (and respect) for the capabilities of the product.

The single most powerful part of Dreamweaver is the use of templates, which allow you to use the same look and feel across multiple pages and have all those pages updated when you make changes to the template. This alone will save you hours!

Another great thing about Dreamweaver is that creates clean HTML. This is something that any developer who has ever had to edit the HTML directly will respect -- especially if you've ever tried to make sense of FrontPage HTML nonsense.

Finally, the FTP application in Dreamweaver is outstanding. It keeps track of every page, graphic, link, etc. in your site and any change to any of them is cascaded through the entire site -- automatically updating links where necessary. With a simple click of a button your site is uploaded to your webserver.

There are so many features I haven't covered, but with the little I have this product is worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stupidly Discontinued!
Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4. They have turned this once great web design package into a hybrid cross of something that looks like Netscape/Flash and called it Dreamweaver MX 2004.

I used Dreamweaver MX 2004 for a month, uninstalled it and went back to Dreamweaver 4. It really is that terrible and the work space is terribly cluttered making it very hard to work within.

Bottom Line -- Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 instead if you can find it. Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 is a very good web design package that knocks Dreamweaver MX 2004 for ten. You will simply hate Dreamweaver MX 2004 when you install it on your system. I nearly barfed after a month of using that *new* completely hostile and non-user friendly piece of unstable and slow excuse for a web design software program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review for Dreamweaver 5
-This review is for Dreamweaver 5- I absolutely love this software. I had Adobe Go Live but I never seemed to take to it like I did with Dreamweaver. Once it was installed within a day, I had made several webpages. As I continued to use it I learned more and more intuitively without needing much guidance from the manual. As a user you can create your webpages visually or in code mode, this makes it a great option for anyone no matter what your skill - it can be adjusted to suit your needs. You can learn and develop your webpage skills as much or as little as you like. You do not need to be intimidated by it's high price. You can learn it and the cost is well worth the output. ...
I don't have to look for anything else, I have hit paydirt with this program! If you are using Front Page or any other visual interface for ease, you know that you are trapped into a forced format, get this program and you will understand the freedom of control without fear!

About Fireworks 4:

Fireworks is a dedicated Web graphics application. You can create bothvector and bit-map images, optimize them for Web pages, and addnumerous special effects for export direct to HTML.

The starting point is a familiar range of drawing and painting tools, such as shapes, lines, brushes, pens, and selection tools. In thedefault vector mode they create editable, scalable objects, and inbit-map mode they paint pixels. Fireworks supports layers andmasks--virtual overlaid surfaces that you can edit independently, enablingdesigners to achieve a wide range of effects. For example, you can varyopacity and blending to fine-tune the final appearance. Other Fireworkspanels include color, stroke, fill, and effects. There is also alibrary panel where you can store graphic elements for reuse.

A key feature for Web designers is optimization. Fireworks offersmaximum control over the critical tradeoff between quality and size. Atwo-up and four-up view lets you compare the quality of original andoptimized versions, using techniques such as reducing color depth andremoving unused colors. The software offers strong support for GIF,JPEG, and PNG image formats. Fireworks also lets you create animationthat is exported as an animated GIF. It will also generate JavaScriptto produce image rollovers and, in this new version, pop-up menus. There is great support for hotspots and slices, techniques for mappingor dividing an image to support HTML features. Integration withMacromedia's Dreamweaver 4 is better than ever in version 4 ofFireworks. Dreamweaver UltraDev 4/Fireworks Studio combines the twoproducts at a lower price. You can export to Dreamweaver--or launchFireworks directly from Dreamweaver--edit an image, and save it backwith all Fireworks-specific information preserved. --TimAnderson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New Paradigm
Getting from proof-of-concept to production has never been simpler, more powerful, or more compelling. Simply revolutionary. One of the most powerful and pervasive development suites I've seen or used. The well-ordered convergence of technologies in StudioMX is truly inspired. Now data logic and structure, business logic and rules, and presentation logic can be clearly distinct from each other for cleaner, more succinct development methods, and more closely integrated for producing more powerful rich media network applications than ever before.

5-0 out of 5 stars The all-around solution for web design.
Dreamweaver MX, Fireworks MX, and Flash MX are the perfect trio for web design/development professionals. With the more seamless integration which MacroMedia has devised for this upgrade, they are even more valuable to you.

Dreamweaver provides the easiest WYSIWYG design capabilities I've found. MX also incorporates all of the features previously found in Dreamweaver UltraDev. Round-trip editing of Fireworks and Flash imports makes this your total web solution.

While I've always preferred Illustrator over FreeHand, and ColdFusion is strictly for the PC platform, the set is well worth your investment. And, if you're a fan of those two programs, so much the better. ... Read more

This review refers to the Windows versionof Dreamweaver 4.0.

Some folks pour Web code from their soul using nothing more than a simple texteditor. Others avoid code altogether by building pages in a WYSIWYG editor'svisual interface. For professional Web development crews, a multi-userenvironment efficiently manages the fast-paced flow of page content updates.

Amazon.com Review

With company intranets, extranets, and the Internet blurringtogether, Web designers and developers will be even more grateful tohave the help of CourseBuilder for Dreamweaver in building customerinteraction, education, and help sites. The mind you save may well beyour own!

As an enhancement library for Dreamweaver 3.0, CourseBuilder simplifiesboth the visual application of interactive elements (sliders, customized submit buttons, images that swap out when a user clicks onthe right page location, or drag-and-drop functionality) and buildingthe stuff of grammar-school terror: multiple choice, true/false, checkall that apply, fill in the blank. As is the case when usingDreamweaver, it's helpful to have some knowledge of the coding behindthe scenes while working on your Web projects. However, CourseBuildercan save even the expert a large amount of time through itspreformatted sequences.

Functional improvements over the earlier version include the ability toedit an interaction you've just created, embed Authorware packages in aWeb page, and assign a separate layer to a CourseBuilder Interaction. The new ability to undo your mistakes, action by action, is a greatblessing; in a Web-authoring tool rich with buttons and menus, it wasgood to see a few subtle enhancements to the interface for clarity ofuse.

For those who want to get fancy with databases and server-side scripts,CourseBuilder can accommodate sending data through HTML, ASP, and ColdFusion tags. If your Web server is running computer-managed instructionsoftware (CMI), such as Lotus Pathware 3.02 or higher, CourseBuilderalso has a feature called Knowledge Track, enabling your interaction tocommunicate its data back to the CMI server. All in all, CourseBuilderis a strong enhancement to the rich Dreamweaver environment. --BetsyAoki ... Read more

Adobe has taken GoLive, its Web design and management tool, and improvedits integration with other applications, adding a number of useful extras in theprocess. In addition to the design elements of the program, GoLive 6.0 includessections devoted to Web site management and maintenance, as well as teamcollaboration.

The main working area of the program deliberately looks much like other Adobeapplications, making it easy to move between them. The main editing windowsfloat on the GoLive worktop, with palettes of functions controlling the tools.Users can now drag and stash palette tabs individually at the edge of thescreen.

The key new features of GoLive 6.0 can be divided into three areas. Under thedesign-and-develop category comes greatly improved table handling, with newediting features--particularly selection--and increased control of HTML code.Adobe has also integrated GoLive more closely with Photoshop, Illustrator, andLiveMotion.

Manage functions govern how several people working on same aspect of a sitehandle different versions and revisions. The revision list is a good example, asit offers full details of who made certain changes to what, along with the timethe changes were entered.

Finally, there's the deploy function, for when you finally launch your site. This feature offers new and improved support for WML authoring, writing fordisplay on WAP devices, XML, QuickTime, and more of the growing family of Webstandards.

Overall, GoLive is a worthwhile improvement if you're thinking about upgradingfrom a previous version. For newbies, make sure you're serious about Web sitemanagement, as this is a heavyweight tool. --Simon Williams ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A big improvement when used with OS X
On my G4 (I do have ample memory- 1.5 gb RAM) Go Live 6 is great. Substantially faster than previous versions. I have had no crashes, freezes, or other annoyances. After about 9 months, I don't want to work with any application that is not OS X native anymore. This one works for me as advertised. I would give five stars but for a few clunky idiosyncracies that have always been present in GoLive. (I find that this is a two-monitor application: site window and tool windows on the left monitor; open page on the right. I've used it with one monitor and it's really crowded.)

2-0 out of 5 stars Not ready for prime time
I've used GoLive since version 4, and this is without a doubt, a step backwards. On my G4 533DP, this product is terribly slow when working with sites with more than a few hundred files. Random crashes are frequent, requiring me to do a "save" after almost every operation. It appears that Adobe rushed to get this one out the door. I'm hoping a point-fix is released soon addressing the performance and bugs. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX is a topflight Web editor for dynamic sitesas well as static pages. Dreamweaver's excellent visual tools generate code thatworks across all the leading Web browsers, winning it the respect ofprofessionals. Its availability on the Mac as well as Windows is another strongfeature for designers. The product is also extensible, with a huge range ofthird-party add-ons available from Macromedia's Web site, many of them free ofcharge. There is great support for Internet standards, including cascading stylesheets, XHTML, and accessibility features. Built-in validating mechanisms makeit easy to check a page, and everything is highly configurable so you canspecify the standards you want to support.

This is a visual editor, which means you can create and edit a Web page byselecting items such as tables, forms, and images from a tabbed palette. TheProperties panel lets you specify details such as borders, styles, andhyperlinks, and you can also use the visual editor for frames and layers. Manydesigners also like to edit the underlying HTML, and this is where DreamweaverMX comes into its own. It supports either a pure code view or a split view thatlets you click seamlessly between the code and visual editors. A lot of thefeatures previously found in HomeSite, Macromedia's text-based Web editor, arenow integrated into Dreamweaver, including pop-up code hints, a snippets panelthat lets you keep handy pieces of code for reuse, and a tag chooser that letsyou grab the right tag from a list. An O'Reilly tag reference is built in.

Dreamweaver's template support deserves special mention. Templates give you aquick start with a number of predesigned pages. In Dreamweaver MX, they can alsobe used to lock down areas of the page, so that contributors can create and edita story without disturbing the design. Templates can be nested so that changesto an underlying template ripple through the pages that use it for powerfulsite-wide updates.

Macromedia used to market a product called Dreamweaver UltraDev, which allowedfor rapid development of Web applications featuring online databases, memberlogin, and other server-side elements. In Dreamweaver MX, this capability isbuilt in. It has also been extended, adding support for ASP.NET and PHP as wellas ColdFusion, JavaServer pages, and traditional ASP. Nonspecialists will findthemselves able to build rich dynamic pages, while the integrated code editormakes this a capable development product as well. In fact, Dreamweaver MX hasalso replaced ColdFusion Studio as the primary development tool for ColdFusionMX. It is a uniquely flexible package.

Overall, it's hard to find fault with Dreamweaver MX. It's true that itscomplexity and professional features make it harder to pick up than some rivalproducts. The abundance of panels and options can be confusing, and ahigh-resolution screen is required. In addition, the Studio MX products, whichinclude Dreamweaver, are a better value for those who need more than one of theMX series. However, this takes nothing away from the excellence of Dreamweaveras the first-choice tool for professionals. --Tim Anderson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars much better than earlier versions
Earlier versions of DW were almost unusably buggy. Crashed every hour, and i'd discover new bugs every time i ran it. I'd report them and never see them listed as fixed bugs. Spent most of my time switching over to BBEdit to clean up the mess. This new version seems much less buggy so far - crashes are rare. (Of course that might be due in part to running it under OSX instead of OS9, but...) It still creates weird code at times, and has some other annoyances, but i have no serious complaints yet. ... Amazon.com Product Description

Namo WebEditor 4 makes it easy to create both personal Web sites and professional e-business sites. It is equipped with powerful graphics tools that allow you to create and edit Web graphics with no hassle. It also provides e-business tools for creating various types of chart and database connectivity. Features include a database wizard, easy document editing, e-business tools, multimedia design and support, a script wizard and script manager, and an intelligent navigation bar.

The database wizard lets you easily create dynamic, database-driven Web documents by following a few simple steps. The wizard creates a block, along with the necessary code to display, add, or modify data in a database system within the block. The wizard can create six different types of blocks that display records of the database system or allow site visitors to modify database records. Connect your Web pages to any ODBC-enabled databases such as MS dBase, Excel, Paradox, Access, SQL, Oracle, and more.

Namo WebEditor 4 provides a nice and easy method of HTML conversion. Visual guide functions help you work with layouts of tables, graphics, and layers. You can freely move, measure, and re-size them simply by clicking and dragging your mouse pointer. Strong macro functions help you reduce the repetition of input operations. Quick Insert handles HTML files as well as frequently used words. If you insert a HTML file by using Quick Insert, all graphics in the HTML file are automatically added as well. You can define either internal or imported style sheets, which allows full user control over the entire Web site as well as individual HTML files. All files on a Web site created by the site wizard are linked to external style-sheet file default.css, so you can change the style of a Web site in seconds. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best!
Simply try to see it yourself!

Can't compare it with FrontPage, GoLive or any other product available.

Best tool ever!

(Hmm, it is cheaper at Amazon.com....)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Web Editing Software
This software I believe is the best out their for 99% of websites. And when you factor in the price it is the best dollar for dollar without question.

The software is simple and cheap enough for beginners, but it also has full database support, mysql, php interaction, so advanced users can benefit as well. I do a lot of script/database programming and I looked around and tried trial versions of a lot of editors and concluded that Namo is the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST web design tool!
This is THE best web design tool. I've used every major web tools- Dreamweaver, Page Mill, Go Alive, and Front Page. Namo offers everything that those softwares offer plus alot more at significantly lower price! Namo offers ASP and even PHP that others do not offer.

Namo costs only 99 bucks(it's even cheaper here at Amazon) whereas Dreamweaver costs hefty 500 bucks, Frontpage 200 149 bucks, and GoAlive 200 bucks.

If you want THE web desinging software (1)with which you can learn by yourself (Without taking classes that cost a couple thousand bucks) (2)that has more advanced functions/platforms (3)that is easy to use (4)that is cost effective. This is the one you should go for. Keep researching about web designing tools, you will end up with this anyways. You can actually try a trial version of Namo for a month at http://www.namo.com Enjoy!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best HTML Web Authoring Tool : Easy and Strong to Use
I used to use Frontpage2000 combined with Dreamweaver. Frontpage is easy to lay out page but no more with dealing layer, dhtml. Dreamweaver is strong. But it is awkward for windows user to use Mac based interface. It provides windows platform based interface, which makes user easy to use unlike Dreamweaver and Golive coming from Mac platform. WebEditor's interface is similiar to Homesite and Frontpage. Dealing with layer and timeline has common features with Dreamweaver. Easy and Strong to Use. Namo WebEditor 4.0 can be a might darkhorse in the web authoring tool market. It provides various functionality site management, multimedia support for Flash,Quicktime. Real media and Windows Media Player, navigation menu, cross browing support.smart button and 200 templtes ready to use. The novice to Web programming can generate javascript code without knowing javascript programming with the help of javascript wizard. It provides additional two gifts Gif Animation maker and screen capture program . It really pays off. ... Read more
