Amazon.com Review

PHPEd is NuSphere's answer to the slick IDEs of the big publishers. Designed to work with several languages--HTML, JavaScript, SQL, and especially PHP--the environment works well. Its easy-to-understand interface simplifies the creation of Web applications with HTML and JavaScript on the client side, PHP as the scripting language in the middle, and a MySQL database at the back end.

PHPEd's editor has prime importance. It's clever and uncluttered, and makes three key improvements on the capabilities of a basic editor: syntax highlighting, variable listing, and real-time syntax help. This last feature is especially helpful, as each time you enter a function name the editor will unobtrusively open up a small reference window that contains a one-line syntax guide for the function. You see what the mandatory and optional arguments are, what data types the arguments must be, and what data type the function returns.

The editor is nice, but its features alone probably won't motivate many programmers to pay for PHPEd. Integrated FTP for management of remote files is nice, too, but similarly, not enough to make someone buy. What might tip the balance is the first key appeal of this IDE, its debugger. With the PHPEd debugger you can add variables to a watch list and monitor their values as they change during step-by-step execution of a PHP script. You can also hover your mouse pointer over a variable name during stepped execution and see its value in a pop-up window. In addition to step-by-step execution, PHPEd allows you to establish breakpoints in your code.

The second big attraction of this kit is its ability to integrate closely with MySQL databases. Once you open a connection to a MySQL database from within PHPEd (the database can be local or on a remote server), you can easily browse the contents of the database as you formulate your programming strategy. Then, when you're ready to start writing PHP code that actually manipulates the database, you can test your SQL sentences in a convenient window.

PHPEd is not the extent of this package, however. It ships with a set of Web servers and language interpreters that together make up the back end for which PHPEd will help you write applications:

  • PHP 4.0.6. Naturally, this kit comes with a PHP interpreter. This is the actual run-time environment that reads, validates, and executes PHP scripts (those written in PHPEd and elsewhere). As a server-side scripting language, PHP is similar in function to Microsoft's Active Server Pages (ASP) and Sun's JavaServer Pages (JSP). It's particularly potent when paired with a MySQL database.
  • MySQL 3.23.41. An open-source relational database management system (RDBMS) that's widely used, meticulously maintained, and easily manipulated with PHP. It supports standard SQL-92, and should be familiar to anyone who has done SQL work.
  • Perl 5.6.1. Perl, like PHP, can be used to generate Web pages based on form submissions and query results. Its text-manipulation facilities are probably better than PHP's, but the question of which you use is largely a matter of personal taste.
  • Apache 1.3.20. The Apache Web server makes your applications available to all browsers by responding to HTTP requests. This kit ships with the mod_perl module for running Perl scripts and the mod_ssl module for providing Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption of communications.
As is typical of NuSphere products, PHPEd Advantage comes with a set of commercially available books instead of a custom-produced manual. It's a good strategy that keeps NuSphere from having to reinvent the wheel, particularly considering that the books are all generally respected ones:
  • PHP Pocket Reference
  • Apache Pocket Reference
  • Perl 5 Pocket Reference, Third Edition
  • MySQL/PHP Database Applications
The "advantage" in this product's name refers to a subscription service that comes in addition to the CD-ROM. Every quarter for a year, NuSphere ships its registered users an update disk that contains the latest versions of the four packages. You get support, too: Web and e-mail support for a year.

Overall, PHPEd Advantage does its job well. It establishes a solid back-end environment for Web development, and provides a good IDE for writing software. The whole solution is reasonably priced. It's a great choice if you work with PHP and MySQL. --David Wall ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Recent Win32 VB Convert
I recently decided not to upgrade my Microsoft VB6 development toolset to the latest .NET product. Basically driven by cost. I then decided to look for an IDE that could deliver similar functionality and decided upon Nusphere PHPed. This is fine product although I do not give 5 stars as I have found the debugger a little temperamental at times. In time I know this product will mature and become a valuable asset.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality PHP development tools
I was a very happy user of NuSphere MySQL when I decided to purchase PHPEd Advantage. I do consulting work for web site developers, and prefer PHP to ASP or CF.

I wanted more than a PHP debugger, which I got, but I am most happy with the debugger. It is very capable, and integrated into the editor and class browser. It compares very well to Visual C++, but I haven't used Visual .NET to compare.

Web publishing is with FTP. I have heard that the new version supports WebDAV and CVS archiving, but I haven't tried it yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional Developers Tools for PHP
Powerful, flexible product. While its integrated debugger is the best I've used, it's not the only reason to buy. The editor does a good job with HTML, PHP, Perl and Javascript. The tool incorporates push-button publishing to remote sites, manages projects, provides a class browser, and is an on-line linter.

Especially nice is its direct connection to MySQL, with SQL statement checking builtin. Direct preview of PHP pages using the (integrated Apache).

Equivalent to Microsoft Visual XXX but for PHP.

Client requires windoze, but servers can be linux/unix. Frequent updates (three functionality upgrades since June). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best x-platform, client-server application development tool
This latest version of 4D really helps keep it up with the competition, but in terms of turning out applications for small and large numbers of users quickly, it's got to be one of the best tools on the market, especially in a mixed PC/Mac environment.

Rather than being a RAD tool with a database engine bolted on, 4D is a completely integrated, database application development tool containing everything needed to create everything from single-user to large multi-user client-server systems. There's also an ODBC driver available for 4D server and 4D can act as a client to SQL and ODBC backends such as Oracle, MS SQL Server, Sybase, etc.

The new webserver in 4D 6.5 now makes it far easier to produce intranet/internet applications than ever before, and it makes it far easier to let web designers do all the design work.

The productivity increases with this latest version keep it well up with the competition, plus the engine speed improvements and additional internet features are an even bigger bonus. Add to that the interface improvements and loads of other new features and it's got to be the best value product ACI have ever released.

4D is a great tool for any sized application from single user to 150+ with the added benefit of having even more users connecting via the webserver, all in one box. It's even got a proper machine code compiler.

This package has everything you need to get started with 4D development as it comes with the compiler, plus the most popular plug-ins from ACI. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Borland Delphi is to integrated development environments (IDEs) as the Macintosh is to personal computers. Like the Mac, Delphi is technically superior to its competitors in many ways and has a devoted following of users. It isn't as popular as its competitors in terms of raw sales volume, but if you use--or try--Delphi you probably won't care. Delphi is a pleasure to work with, and this Enterprise edition brings its intelligent tools to bear on applications that rely on database access, network communications, or a combination of the two. If you prefer Object Pascal to Visual Basic and want to do serious network, database, and internationalized programming, you'll love Delphi 5 Enterprise.

Chief among the attractions of the Enterprise edition on the database-development side is its support for Microsoft SQL Server 7, something that no other version of Delphi includes. You can refer to ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) with Delphi's new ADOExpress object; developers can build database interfaces on top of SQL Server back ends without dealing with ADO directly. There's similar support for InterBase 6.0 (a copy of which ships with Delphi 5 Enterprise) and Oracle 8i. The Enterprise edition also comes with SQL drivers for Oracle, Sybase, Informix, Microsoft, and other database servers, with unlimited permission to distribute them with the applications you create.

Borland's Multi-tIer Distributed Application Services (MIDAS) system remains at the heart of Delphi's database development capability, but it's been enhanced with stateless Remote Data Modules (RDMs). RDMs make it easier to create database applications that behave properly in situations in which bandwidth is minimal or unreliable. MIDAS also now has some support for Extensible Markup Language (XML). The Enterprise edition includes a set of tools for XML generation and parsing, so you can dynamically serve XML documents to clients and take XML data as input. There are tools for distributed computing, too, including a debugger that works with remote CORBA and COM resources.

Delphi now has better support for development teams (in the form of a to-do list and a Project Browser tool). Internationalization is easier, too: The Translation Suite allows you to isolate different languages' character strings--the German and Gujarati for "Close File," for example--in separate library files. You can write for languages such as Chinese and Korean with double-byte characters, but Unicode support remains poor. The debugger now allows you to define and toggle sets of breakpoints.

There's an assortment of bonus goodies in this kit, too:

  • Borland JBuilder 2, for Java development
  • Borland C++ Builder 3, for C/C++ work
  • HoTMetaL Pro 5.0, for HTML authoring
  • And the Delphi Companion Tools CD, which contains tools from companies other than Borland. Some of them are good (such as the full version of the UnitOOPS Object Linking and Embedding components), but others are just freeware and demo versions of other products you can buy.
Annoyingly, the Delphi 5 installation routine won't check for sufficient disk space before beginning to copy files. If you lack room (the amount required varies according to the options you select), the installation wizard will complete only part of its job before stopping, forcing you to go back and remove the partially installed software before attempting another installation.

Borland recommends running Delphi 5 Enterprise on a Pentium 90 with 32 MB of RAM and as little as 80 MB of disk space. Less optimistically, we found a "typical" installation filling more than 200 MB on the disk (250 MB to be safe). Performance on a 500 MHz Pentium III with 256 MB of RAM was solid but hardly blinding; buyers should err toward the higher end, as with any development environment.

Make sure you have plenty of disk space available when you set out to install Delphi 5 Enterprise, and you'll be thrilled by the additions to the Delphi development environment. --David Wall ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Resistance is Futile
Once a VB programmer and still a C++ programmer, I found Delphi years ago and have been in love ever since...

Now, Delphi has it all! And Enterprise 5 is worth the money -- for Enterprise development. Do not buy Enterprises just because it has ADO and Internet components, as you can get these as add-ons to "Delphi Professional" direct from the Inprise shop after you buy Delphi professional here at Amazon.

Those of you who do not know what Delphi is...

It is very productive and powerful language capable of all things Micro$oft. "Delphi is almost as easy as Visual Basic but has the power of C".

Most importantly, we are all programming in competitive market, once you have learned Delphi you will find yourself shutting C++ Builder (or Visual C++) down and opening Delphi, half the development time, and almost the same power.

Inprise Just made a "commitment to Linux" so who knows what it is store for Delphi users, the new C++ Builder is already Linux Friendly. Now for you tech heads using Micro$oft:

Well Delphi has always been a Windows programming language, but unlike the Micro$oft development community. The Delphi community is very tech oriented, meaning they are very helpful to one another with hundreds of free components and free source code sites. If you are using VB, Get Delphi, and hang on tight, as you will be assimilated!

"True Programmers Never Sleep"

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll never look back!
My first language with MS Windows was Visual Basic 3.0. Once I started using Delphi 3.0 three years ago I never looked back. COM, ActiveX, components for a Multi-Tier architeture, fast compiles, true object oriented language, no OCX files to distribute, and more! Try it and see for yourself!

5-0 out of 5 stars Delphi and C++ Builder are the best
Forget about Microsoft, Borland's Delphi and C++ Builder beat Visual Basic and Visual C++ cleanly. Be wise and choose Borland ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The beta of Delphi 6 was awesome!
If you are currently running Delphi 4 or earlier I highly recomend this upgrade. Delphi 5 users will find this version upgrade useful but not mandatory. Support for XML and SOAP and the latest computing standards.

If you want to target Linux and future cross platform environments (other unix flovors, solars and BSD via OSX) this will be a required upgrade since the clix components (Qt) will be in Delphi 6 and later versions, DB Express will be your database connection layer for cross platform development.

Variant support on Linux yea!

This is the best Delphi yet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best RAD tool on the market
I've always been keen on doing Windows programming rather than just stick with console programming using C++. MS Visual Basic 6.0 did allow me to do just that, but somehow it never got me going, especially with more complex functions.

Then, I heard of very good reviews of Delphi and started to get myself familiar with it. What an awesome programming language! Although Delphi 5 isn't the most popular RAD tool, but its definitely the best! The Professional version provides enough functionality to build good applications using components directly out of the box. The beauty of this IDE is also the fact that there are many, many more components which can be 'plugged' into your projects, and some without having to do much or any coding/recoding, which is just great. Some even come with source codes, so that you might build upon rather than rebuild from scratch. Reusable and open source code is one of Delphi's strong points.

No matter what version you might have, you could probably find some components off the web which are either freeware or shareware and is just as, or even better than some components which came with the package. All I can say is that Borland created a really awesome tool that's very easy to get used to. What about the bad points? As I'm not a professional, but rather a casual programmer, I found that compile, debugging times were just aweful compared to MS VB6. Same goes with JBuilder, just to mention it. The Run-time wasn't that great either, but who's to complain when you can drastically cut down on development time. Documentation was alright, and to tell you the truth, more books should be written about it. Goes to show that Delphi isn't mainstream compared to C++ or VB.

No one should spend lots of time doing basic coding of basic features of a program unless they have to, ESPECIALLY when it takes hundreds of lines to code in C++. If you want to be involved in RAD, the Borland's Delphi 5 is your best bet, guaranteed! You get the power of C, but the ease of VB. No point 'reinventing the wheel' like they all say. However, if you feel that C++ is your strength, go get Borland's C++ Builder which sticks with the concept of visual design just like Delphi. I'm was not a Borland fan in the beginning, but now I'm giving my full support for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best Windows development system
I've been programing Windows professionally since 3.1, using C, C++, Visual Basic, and even some Fortran. There is no question that Delphi is the best Windows development enironment currently available. It combines the speed of C++ with the flexibility of VB, while avoiding the complexity of C++ and the sloppy annoyances of VB. And it's easy to learn - not as easy as VB, but _way_ easier than C/C++. Plus Borland will soon release Kylix, the Linux version of Delphi, and for the first time it will be relatively easy to port Windows apps to Linux - if the app was developed with Delphi.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best IDE for Windows
Delphi has to be the best IDE for Windows, and certainly the best thing going for Pascal coding.

Borland Delphi 5 is amazingly responsive, and works well on average hardware, compiles quickly, and has many features.

A person can do in 100 lines of Delphi the same thing that takes 1000's lines in C++. ... Read more
