Amazon.com Review

Home users who want to secure their Mac from unwanted intruders andvirus attacks will find Norton Internet Security 1.0 an invaluable package. Thecombination of a simple--yet effective--firewall, Norton's best-selling AntiVirusapplication, and iClean from Aladdin Systems which cleans up and removes unwantedWeb-related files, this software provides an integrated security solution for Mac users whospend much of their time online.

Installation is quick and easy, guiding you through checking your Mac forviruses before you install, and only requiring you to select the level of virusprotection you require. NortonAntiVirus 7.0 not only protects you from a huge list of viruses--includingMacro viruses, which are the most common form of virus on the Mac--but it evenscans e-mail attachments as you download them, allowing you to stop an infectedfile before it reaches your computer. Basic configuration of Norton AntiVirus 7.0 is simple, requiring you to simply select a protection level from "NoProtection," if you prefer to scan for viruses manually, to "Full Protection,"which not only scans all files and applications whenever you use them, but alsowatches for virus-like activity, which could indicate that you have a new virusthat is not in the database. Keeping the application and its essential virusdefinitions up to date is made simple by the LiveUpdate feature, which allowsyou to download new versions manually when you are online, or at scheduledtimes.

The most striking feature of NortonPersonal Firewall 1.0, also included, is its simplicity. Once you run thesoftware installer and restart your Mac, you are protected from all forms ofunauthorized access from the Internet, and that's practically all there is toit. Using Norton Personal Firewall 1.0 for the first time, it's surprising tosee just how many attempts are made to access your computer without yourpermission during an average session on the Net.

In its default configuration, the firewall blocks all access to your Mac by FileSharing over TCP/IP, Program Linking over TCP/IP, Web Sharing, and All Others. We found that setting all of these access types to Deny All Access caused someminor problems with services such as anonymous ftp. However, temporarilydisabling Norton Personal Firewall 1.0 only requires a single click on thefirewall control strip module. In addition, with the advanced preferences inNorton Personal Firewall 1.0, you can either list specific IP addresses, whichare allowed access to your Mac, or list the IP addresses, which may not haveaccess. Finally, Aladdin Systems iClean provides a quick and simple way to cleanout unwanted Internet-related files such as browser caches, cookies, and pagehistory files.

Mac users who spend much of their time online, and particularly those withalways-on Internet access such as ADSL and cable modems, will find this suite ofsecurity applications an effective way of maintaining peace of mind with minimumfuss. --Daniel Jardine ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a "must-have" for Mac's connected to the internet
I bought an iBook and hooked it up to the internet on my cable modem at home via the airport card, and I must say it is a pleasure to surf the internet at home at these speeds. But when I got to work the next day and started telling people about this, everyone asked "Do you have a firewall?"

At first, owning firewall software seemed excessively cautious. Who would want to access my computer? But one person told me how there computer was 'hijacked' unbeknownst to him, and used in an internet denial-of-service attack. Another person, who has a firewall, told me that he couldn't believe how often his computer was 'probed', and how his firewall protected his computer.

So I bought this software on their advice, and it was a good investment. It is very easy to install and configure the firewall. And it comes with Norton Anti-virus, which is useful for preventing viruses. And it comes with Alladin iClean which is useful for cleaning up after an internet session -- you wouldn't believe all the cookies, caches, and history files that are created after a session.

This is good value for the money...and a must-have if your Mac is on the internet. ... Read more

Convergence seems to be the watchword for the Microsoft FrontPage 2002Web authoring system. Every new edition becomes a bit more like the othercomponents of the Office suite, while also increasingly tying in to relatedMicrosoft products and services. This is vaguely threatening to users who wantgreater freedom to edit HTML and other code directly or who want to call all theshots on their sites' designs, but for most users the expediency of FrontPagemakes these sacrifices worthwhile or even unnoticeable.

With new templates and smart tools ("bots") to help create a wide range ofintranet and Internet pages, version 2002 is even simpler and faster to use thanits predecessors. Users can draw with PowerPoint tools, drag and drop livecontent, and create photo galleries with a few mouse clicks. Publishing isincredibly easy. Beginners will love the wizards, and will find Web authoringmuch easier than expected.

Why do so many people have problems with FrontPage? The main complaint is thatthe output, which tends to be flabby and difficult to parse, can't be edited bythe user and is difficult to run on non-Microsoft servers. This is a problem forthose who've gone beyond using wizards and templates to create their pages, butmany other users are content with the results. The automatic direction toMicrosoft-related services is also somewhat troubling--it would be nice, ifunrealistic, for users to have easier access to the wide range of servers ande-commerce providers available.

Still, for Webbies with fairly simple needs and no desire to spend monthslearning the ins and outs of HTML and XML, FrontPage 2002 is most likely the wayto go. --Rob Lightner ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Better off with ground meat... literally...
I started off with FrontPage 97... and gradually worked up to FrontPage 2002.I used to think FrontPage was a godsend, boy was I wrong.Things only work if using MS Internet Explorer for a browser, or just plain doesn't work if your ISP doesn't support it's extensions.

I now use Macromedia Dreamweaver. However, between using FrontPage and being able to afford Dreamweaver, I used a nice product by some folks with a funny name. A product named "HotDog Pro" made by Sausage Software!Funny tho it may be, their software is nothing to laugh at!It is a GREAT product, and costs A LOT LESS than MS FrontPage!

4-0 out of 5 stars Front Page put me in the web business
I read some of these reviews and I must say that 2002 is so deep I think I feel into a hole.As far as the software being difficult, I spent considerable time in the library with some great books.I also bought some books, visual being the best and worked with the software.I took my first order for a web site while I was still learning and let me tell you forms just beat the living hell out of me.What I did was to look at some of the preformed pages of front page and looked at the html andlearned how to use tables with forms and learned even more.

I use front page every day with my ebay items and it is a very professional presentation.

What a wonderful powerful program.I literally have no problem with this program.I don't use the microsoft templates anymore as I make my own using microsoft photodraw v2.

Someday I guess, as I get better I will take some courses in dreamweaver, which I understand is difficult. But Microsoft Front Page 2002 was a piece of software that I was able to challanage myself.Truthfully it is maybe 100 hours of learning and practice, but it is well worth it.

Good job Microsoft, hey, did I say that?In the end if you buy this and think it will be an easy learn, forget it.It is web design.Difficulty is moderate, but you must focus and practice to learn this software.

Take command and get and learn front page, find a good host and boom you are in with a professional website for your business.

1-0 out of 5 stars This software does not work
Quite simply this software does not work, and I've been using other versions of FrontPage since it first came out--check out the Microsoft web site--they have loads of 'fixes' for this software.None of the web component functions work, and neither does shared borders.I can't imagine that they would continue to sell this.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best part of this package is WebExpress 4
I like this package but the crown jewel is definately Microvision's WebExpress 4 which is bundled as part of the package. This is one of the best HTML programs that I have ever used and offers excellent site management capabilities. If you are looking for a top quality but affordable program, you can't go wrong with this. The rest of the programs aren't as good but WebExpress makes up for it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but Buggy
I've used several webbuiilders , everything from Adobe to Frontpage and found that Web Page Construction in the easiest to use. Quickly make buttons and layout and your on your way, but, I've found that it crashes for no reason from time to time Plus you have to copy and past from the menu bar. Yet, i still think it's one of the best out there for people just starting out on the web.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy AND Helpful
I loved Web Page Construction Delux! It was so easy ( even for a computer illiterate like me ).I was able to build a stylish, professional looking web page in a weekend and I actually had fun doing it.This is a very good program and I recomend it to anyone looking for a fun and easy way to build a great first web page. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Effective and comprehensive ad blocker
Zeroads is excellent software. I have tried nearly every ad blocking and pop-up blocking software on the market before I settled on this one. Most ad and pop up blockers are limited to a few types of ads or only pop-ups. Zeroads uses low level network packet sniffing technology based on Microsoft's Layered Service Provider protocol to interercept and modify ad content before it gets to the computer. The result it that it blocks pop-ups, flash ads, gif ads, cookies, and nearly every other form of adware. The block lists are automatically updated weekly by the software. The installation is simple, the user interface is attractive and well designed, and the model is set it and forget it as everything is automated. Web surfing with Zeroads is not only "cleaner" but generally much faster. This program is addictive and I always run it on my laptop.

As a software developer I think an important factor to note is that the layered software protocol is a widely abused system protocol by many software companies and malware. Any search on McAffee forums, or Oracle both of which have software components that use the same protocol have had customers that have experienced incompatability with other Layered Software Protocol applications. Spyware and Malware such as webhancer often use this protocol both incorrectly and maliciously. The result it that when two such applications interact users can experience a severed net connection unless the offending application is removed. Zeroads does do a good job of detecting incompatabile LSP's and even alerting the user as to spyware that may have affected their network connection. Also I found FBM software's 24/7 tech support to be responsive and helpfull.

This program is an essential net surfing tool and I highly recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars It kept ruining my internet connection
I downloaded it from Amazon and from the beginning I had problems. I had windows 2000 at the time. Well I downloaded it and immediatly it destroyed my connection and couldn't get back on the internet for weeks. I removed it and was done with it. Well I upgraded to Windows XP and I tried downloading again but with a different type of internet connection. Well first off it is really hard to figure out, so someone who isn't technically savvy would have a really hard time deciding how to set everything at. And if I were to leave my computer sit just for a couple of minutes I would be thrown offline (this was due to Zero ads because when I removed it, I didn't have the problem anymore). Plus it didn't even block the ads it was awful, don't waste your time and money. I'm still searching for something that actually works and I haven't been able to find anything. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Probably the best midrange database development system on the market, Microsoft Visual FoxPro 7.0 Professional Edition takes the ease-of-use and gentle learning curve that are characteristic of Microsoft Access and combines them with the scalability and feature-richness of Microsoft SQL Server 2000. The result is an eminently refined database development system, ideal for projects that aren't performance intensive.

FoxPro disproves the notion that database development and administration are black sciences, comprehensible only to specialists. This database suite demonstrates that you can do meaningful database work in an environment that can be figured out intuitively. The operative word is meaningful. FoxPro is not a friendly-but-feeble database management system you can use only to manage your recipes. Despite its friendly interface, it's a serious database tool.

The traditional way to use FoxPro is to develop a database on a server machine, then compile client applications--which rely on the freely distributable FoxPro runtime environment--to make queries against that server. That's still a good solution, but version 7.0 includes an object linking and embedding (OLE) database provider, with which you can expose FoxPro databases to non-FoxPro client applications. You can also increase your range of client compatibility by choosing to serve your data from Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Edition (MSDE), which ships with this product. Taking the MSDE path also makes future upgrades to the full version of SQL Server easier. It's straightforward to connect FoxPro databases with Internet Information Services (IIS) sites, which means FoxPro can serve as your Web site's back end. So, even though FoxPro isn't technically part of Microsoft's .NET architectural initiative, this new version is a lot more network-centric than any of its ancestors.

A lot of thought--and many years of customer feedback--have clearly gone into the design of this product. It's hard to imagine how the process of setting up a database could be made easier, since all you need to do is use simple menu commands to create a new project and populate it with databases, tables, queries, and the other elements of a useful application. To create a table, for example, you can choose to use a wizard that presents you with some typical tables--contacts, invoices, products, and so on--and the fields each kind of table typically contains. You can then choose to include in your table all or some of an example table's fields, supplement those fields with fields of your own making, and start collecting data.

The most immediately obvious new user-interface feature is IntelliSense, a longtime feature of other Microsoft products. IntelliSense will automatically complete function names and do syntactical grunt work for you as you type code. You can turn off IntelliSense, or modify its behavior, if you find it intrusive. Other interface changes include dockable windows and toolbars, and a couple of new ways to navigate around large code passages. There's also a new Object Browser tool you can use to examine and refer to the COM objects in your application's environment.

If you prefer to work with code and a command line, FoxPro has your number, as well. You can type commands and arguments that create databases, tables, relationships, views, reports, and queries, to say nothing of full-fledged business applications. The FoxPro language, like its graphical user interface, has been expanded and refined over the years. Microsoft has added more than 50 new commands, functions, and system variables to the language since its last release. Many of the more interesting ones--like XMLUPDATEGRAM() for sending database change notifications--have to do with importing and exporting data in Extensible Markup Language (XML). It's also now possible to monitor and react to events thrown by non-FoxPro COM objects.

Further improvements in FoxPro 7.0 include support for Web services (with which you can advertise your application's capabilities on a network) and Active Accessibility, which is Microsoft's set of hooks for devices and software that help handicapped people. There's also a copy of InstallShield Express included here, which enables you to create deployment packages that install the required files and make the needed settings on computers that will run your applications.

You wouldn't use FoxPro to store values for a performance-intensive software application, and it's a bit too costly to replace quick-and-dirty Access for simple database work. But for medium-size organizations that need to make it easier for people to share data, FoxPro's power and elegance promises to enable insiders to solve database problems with a minimum of outside consulting expense. --David Wall ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best yet!
I have been working in FoxPro and Visual FoxPro for 7 years now. With each upgrade, FoxPro has only gotten better. With Web Service, IntelliSense, XML, and OLE DB, this is the best yet! I've only been working with for a few days now, but I can't wait to find out what lies in store for me. It's a programmer's dream come true.

5-0 out of 5 stars VFP web rocks!!
VFP has always been about speed and now this version makes it extremely easy to put that database and string processing speed to use in VFP mtdlls and XML Web Services. For rapidly developing web apps, compare the speed, robustness, and scalability of VFP 7 to anything out there(yes, Oracle too) at a fraction of the price of other solutions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Must have for VFP Developers
Although serious VFP developers invariably upgrade with each new version I'd upgrade to version 7 just for the intellisense feature alone. Other development languages have had this for years and it was sorely missed from FoxPro. To me, intellisense alone is worth the price of this upgrade not even mentioning the other other improvements and new features such as XMLToCursor, CursorToXML, OLEDB provider, and much more. Intellisense doesn't cure world hunger I know but I love it! What a time saver. Should of been in VFP long ago. Also the very first beta was astonishingly stable for a pre-release which is a good sign. If you develop with Visual FoxPro at all this is one version upgrade you will not want to wait getting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a must have for the serious database developer.
Having been an early Beta Tester for VFP7 I must say that I am extremely pleased with its performance and its enhancements from previous versions.

An excellent improvement on a very mature and stable OOP database development language, it is well at ease using its native data engine as well as working asa front end or middle tier for any other DBMS, from SQL Server to Oracle to MySQL.

It finally brings Intellisense and an OLEDB Provider!

Visual FoxPro is the only Microsoft development language that can play in any tier of an N-Tier system.

It works well with all the current technologies, MTS, COM, COM+, ADO, XML, ActiveX, etc.

Well worth your adding it to your programmer's toolset!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fox is back
VFP 7.0 has dramatically improved its IDE, including an awesome data driven implementation of Intellisense that is completely customizable, making it one of the best available. But thats not all, improved speed, stability, and XML support, along with the long list of language enhancements suggested by VFP users add up to make this one of the most powerful and easy to use Database tools available. ... Amazon.com Review

Norton Internet Security 2002 is a complete PC security suite, designed to protect you while you are online. Earlier editions of Norton Internet Security offered a separate Family Edition; that edition's features have now been incorporated into the standard product. Norton Internet Security 2002 is also Windows XP compatible.

Four tools make up the Norton Internet Security 2002 suite: Norton AntiVirus 2002, Norton Personal Firewall 2002 (two topnotch products also sold separately), Privacy Control, and Parental Control. This is the same mix as before, but each element has been modestly upgraded. For example, instant-message filtering keeps personal or confidential material from being transferred via Instant Messenger, while the ad-blocking feature removes banner ads from online sites, noticeably speeding up page downloads. The parental control features in this new release keep young people from accessing inappropriate material through file-sharing programs and instant messages, in addition to blocking the content of specific Web sites.

Like earlier editions, Norton Internet Security 2002 is virtually self-configuring--simply insert the CD, install, and reboot. Then use the Security Assistant wizard to customize your level of protection simply by clicking links or answering Yes/No questions, although the preconfigured settings are sufficient to protect PCs in most situations. A new network wizard makes configuration of the personal firewall on home networks easy by detecting local files and printer shares. It also greatly simplifies setting up a firewall to protect multiple PCs sharing one Internet connection; it automatically identifies all machines on the network and configures the gateway that is actually connected to the Net.

If you already own Norton Internet Security 2001 this year's model may not be a compelling upgrade, but those without PC protection software or for users of Windows XP, Norton Internet Security 2002 is a complete protection solution. --Roger Gann, Amazon.uk.co ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Use Cable Or DSL To Go Online, You Need This...
I recently installed Norton Internet Security in my Windows XP system after the previous anti-virus software which came with the computer failed to prevent an attack by the blaster worm virus which came through my DSL line.

The hard drive crashed and it had to be reformatted, and after I reinstalled Windows XP, and my DSL service, I installed Norton Internet Security, and the installation was a dream. I inserted the disc in my CD drive, and the programs installed itself with ease, requiring only a few clicks on the dialog boxes.

Norton Anti-Virus is on another computer I have (a Windows 98), and it's so easy to update the program to keep up with the latest computer viruses and worms with Auto-Update. With Norton Internet Security, you can set Auto-Update to become active automatically when new updates are available, and the updates won't interfere with your work while you're online.

If you use DSL or cable to go online, you've got to have Norton Internet Security installed on your computer, because your DSL/cable service provider's firewall may not be secure enough to prevent hacker attacks, and Norton Personal Firewall adds an extra layer of security to keep your computer safe.

Norton Personal Firewall, which is included in the Internet Security program, was able to stop three hacker attacks within a hour after I'd reinstalled my DSL service, which I think is very impressive.

Along with an easy to use Parental Control program, spam blocker and Intrusion Detection to alert you to hacker attacks before they get to your computer, Norton Internet Security is a must-have program if you use DSL or cable to go online, or even if you use dial-up to go online, get Norton Internet Security. It's definitely worth the money!

2-0 out of 5 stars Better than average product. Non-existant support.
Symantec's Norton Internet Security combines a firewall, anti-virus and ad blocking in a nice package. The LiveUpdate feature makes updates easy. However, Symantec will give you LITTLE to NO support even if you find a bug with their product. Good luck contacting them because they have hidden their phone numbers on their website to force you to solve problems yourself. The problem is that some problems are not solvable by anyone other than Symantec. For example, they have a bug that basically breaks ad blocking. Ad blocking does not work. I paid for this functionality and it is completely broken. They gave no way of reporting the problem and left us customers in the dust. There are other problems too that happen from time to time. The anti-virus software sometimes can't scan your e-mail. So, you won't be able to read your e-mail until they fix their software OR you take the risk of disabling antivirus and getting a potential e-mail virus. I urge everyone who owns this product to complain to Symantec about their complete lack of support. It's one thing if they want to filter out common user problems that waste their tech support staff's time but it's another issue entirely to leave your customers with no recourse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Protect your system...
Yes, this program may slow down your computer slightly, but that's normal for many anti-virus/firewalls programs. The slight slowdown is worth the protection. And it is noticable, since it runs on my slow computer (Pentium 233MHZ, 64MB RAM), it's had a few probs running, but nothing that severe. It's saved my computer from several types of disasters though. And yes, there is a yearly payment for the virus update subscription, but it's all worth it. There are always new trojans and nasty things out there on the web to get ya, but updating regularly will keep you system safe. Nothing has got passed Norton yet, so I am completely satisfied with it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Can be hard to lasso down
While I feel secure with this product and am thoroughly satisfied with the antivirus software, it has the annoying tendency to ignore the user's orders. Specifically, the software allows you to allow, deny, or automatically configure other programs on your computer which try to access the Internet. But after you provide a setting, weeks later it will ask you again whether to allow, deny, etc. as if the program is totally new and had no idea what settings you had put in previously. In the long run this becomes tedious and annoying. However, friends have had the same trouble with McAfee...

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy NIS 2003 For the Ad Blocking Feature Alone
This is a good product, but the 2003 line is better. Norton
Internet Security 2003 contains an OUTSTANDING ad blocking
feature. After installation, I visited numerous sites which had
previously dumped loads of pop-up and pop-under ad windows and
flash-based ads on my screen, but now -- POOF -- no more trash,
with no discernable negative effects on web page loading. Plus
ad banners are effectively eliminated--so all you get is the web
page you want. After a week of intensive use, I have yet to find
a problem with this software. I find it difficult to praise
this product enough--it delivers every feature smoothly and
efficiently, as advertised. I have it installed on my computer
along with Norton Cleansweep--no conflicts or flaws noted. ... Read more
