2-0 out of 5 stars What's Wrong With It?
I am surprised why Fireworks MX 2004 is so slow! I thought that maybe because I was using the trial version, the program crawled through even the basic functions. To be fair, I only spent a few minutes with it so there might be some workarounds I have missed. But those first few minutes disappointed me.

I opened a digital image, (jpeg, about 900kB taken by a digital camera) on Fireworks so I can make exposure corrections. Applied filter, Levels... took Fireworks 3 seconds to open the Levels dialog box.

Clicked Preview. Another 2 or 3 seconds before the change was reflected on the workspace.

Moved the sliders, again 2-3 seconds before the effect updated on the workspace.

The unsharp mask dialog box appeared 3 seconds after the option was clicked and took all of 5 seconds to update the changes.

The slowness of Fireworks MX 2004 is all the more obvious when I compared it with Photoshop 7. There is no waiting time when applying filters in PS 7 for my digital photographs. (Your workflow may vary, of course.) Photoshop is just swift. I looked for scratch disk on Fireworks but found none. Could there be speed-workarounds I have missed? I wonder. If it was really fast it would have blazed as soon as I ran it. I used other Effects like color balance and seen the same behavior: you will see the hourglass everytime you make any change. What a pity as the interface looked really cool. Perhaps the real strength of Fireworks appear in doing Web projects as touted by Macromedia. But Web images are still subject to image editing, aren't they?

I would recommend this if the flipping hourglass icon is your idea of productivity and fun. Trial is available from Macromedia and you can do worse than taking it for a free spin. See for yourself.

If macromedia can make Fireworks MX 2004 as speedy and as reliable as Flash MX (not the 2004 version) I would consider it again. But as it is, no, thank you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Much slower than previous version (MX 6.0)
Despite what Macromedia writes in their self-inflating promotional literature, Fireworks MX 2004 is SLOWER than Fireworks MX. The application has gotten bigger, slower, dumber. Like Dreamweaver MX 2004, it is also rife with bugs that Macromedia refuses to acknowledge, much less issue fixes for.

Try this simple test: create a new document in Fireworks MX (the original version, not 2004). Create some text. create a shape. Add a layer folder. Create text and a shape in that new layer folder. Then try open and close the layer (using triangle). Nice and quick, right? Now take the same document and open it in Fireworks MX 2004. It's slow as a molasses. Trying to open and close the layer triangle takes *seconds* to execute, instead of instantaneous.

Save your money, stick with Fireworks MX. The upgrade to 2004 will only set you back some hard-earned cash, and it will kill your productivity. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Safeworld leaves you unsafe
I have tried twice to upgrade my Antivirus and this product has ripped me off twice now in one month. I have written numerous requests to all their email addresses and you can guess the result!I started trying to renew my Antivirus as soon as I got the first alert at about six weeks. When I puchased the "bundle", I found it only updated my Firewall. After numerous unanswered pleas, like a fool and almost out of time, I opt for the strait Antivirus upgrade for $29.Once again, after applying the code I am still showing "pending" in all but firewall and the antivirus has now completely elapsed back to an "ad".Thanks for nothing, Safeworld, now I have to ditch your working firewall to go to Mc Avee or Norton antivirus. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Remember VB 1.0?
I remember VB 1.0 I was project leader 12 years ago on a job that needed a GUI visualization front-end (the core was a telephony application to be written in C). I could have had the front-end custom written in Motif with Unix workstations, but that would have been prohibitively expensive.

VB had been on the market for just one week, and I knew it was ragged and not mature. But it did the job. And it was dirt cheap.

And so with Data Analyzer. Sure, it's ragged and immature (no cross-tabs in the grid, for example). But at less than 200 bucks a pop, it's BI for the masses. Will it do the job? Maybe 70% of it. Compared to zero for most business users currently, that's a quantum leap. And all this thin/thick client business? What does a business user care about the techie stuff? Am I going to see about installing en masse into my clent base? Absolutely!

Your point about Business Objects etc is well taken. I put BO into my last two clients. It's fabulously powerful. But it's also several thou per seat! The one to worry about is Crystal Analysis. In my view, this is direct competition. Especially when I can put DA onto a hundred desktops for about 6K with volume discounts.

I expect to see DA bundled eventually. Probably not into Office, more likely into the SQL Server bundle. This one is a stayer. If I were an ISV Partner, I'd be losing sleep.

2-0 out of 5 stars There are better products out there
Unfortunately I was pretty disappointed by Data Analyzer. I was looking for a better OLAP interface than Microsoft Excel and this isn't it.

The majority of the interface centers around bar charts (though pie charts and data grids are also available). On the bar charts it is possible to assign one measure to the length of the bar and another measure to the color of the bar. Data Analyzer then creates a color gradient in hopes of showing you "good" and "bad" using color. This is actually a pretty neat feature, but I found it to be little more than eye candy. Personally I believe there are better graphical representations of multidimensional data.

The product does include a "Business Center" tool that allows you to ask canned questions against the data. One of these questions returns a similarity analysis. Again, a very neat feature, but not enough to justify the package.

Overall, I think Excel will serve as a good OLAP interface for most users. Beyond that, products such as ProClarity and BusinessObjects offer much more in terms of an "advanced" OLAP client. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Software
This software Create PDF files from almost any word processing or html programs with very effective compression ratio almost 1/10 the original size. You can also convert post script ps files into PDF files. You can extract pictures, text from any already created PDF files as well.
With this version you can also create an interactive electronic forms similar to the tax forms. This upgrade version will only install on your system if you have Adobe acrobat 4 or 5 installed. This version only works with windows XP, 2000, NT with latest service package.
The difference between the acrobat 6.0 and the acrobat 5.0 is not so big. The new version is optimized for intel P4 systems and it's slightly faster than the old version.

3-0 out of 5 stars Upgrade is no help for Real Estate
As a Realtor who is pushing the envelope, attempting to move to digital file keeping, digital recording, digital faxing, and digital signing, the concept of Adobe Acrobat is extremely helpful. I've been using Adobe Acrobat since version 4. Version 5 was a very useful upgrade, worth every cent. Version 6 was a grand waste of money and has turned into a waste of time. Files take longer to save in Adobe Acrobat 6, but they do end up being smaller, so maybe there is a more advanced compression algorithm at work. Nevertheless, files do take about twice as long to save in the new version.

Furthermore, at least for my line of work, I see no useful additions to the software. The interface looks a little fancier, and a little more advanced with more curved lines and a splash screen with transparency...(everybody together now, "Oooooh, aaaaaaah"). But, at least for my line of work, I have not seen any productivity or security upgrades which make the investment worthwhile. Save yourself the money and stay with version 5.0.

Unfortunately, it seems that the other reviewers' negative comments are right on the money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money.
I bought the 6.0 upgrade without reading the reviews. Woe to the foolish. It slowed WORD to a crawl, brought DtSearch to it's knees, and twice locked my system up so tightly I couldn't get the task manager open.

I didn't waste any additional time seeing how slow it was at its own tasks. I'll take everyone's word for it.

Less than one day on the machine. I've gone back to 5.0.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lasted 1 day on my PC
I downloaded an evaluation copy of Acrobat 6 before I read the reviews here. I can confirm what others are saying: unlike the upgrade from 4.0 to 5.0, 6.0 doesn't offer the average user additional usefulness over 5.0.

It's also much slower to load and takes twice as long to creat .pdf files. The interface is completely different, so there will be a steep learning curve for users upgrading from previous editions. Sometimes, software developers just screw one up, and this one is such an upgrade.

Pay close attention to the features you need: If you just want to print files to .pdf, you don't need all the stuff 6.0 offers. You'll never use 80% of the features they've added.

After one day, I got frustrated, realized I didn't have the time to learn an entirely new piece of software so that I could simply continue to make .pdf files, and uninstalled it.

Lesson learned: Check for reviews FIRST.

5-0 out of 5 stars Here is the Skinny on the Deal
By the time I was done reading the reviews for Adobe Acrobat 6.0 I was depressed. Not only do I not have Windows XP, or Windows 2000, or NT installed in my machine (The only operating systems that will work with 6) I also couldn't muster up the confidence in the product after so many people were giving it the thumbs down. I want to create an eBook, and Adobe Reader is the most popular reader out there, with some 400 million, to a half a billion users with it installed. What a dilemma. I kept coming back to read some more. Finally I found the answer. I bought a new Adobe Acrobat 5.0 here at Amazon from one of their vendors, and it works great with my Windows 98SE. I planned on buying the 6.0 upgrade after they got the bugs out, and or I got a new computer with XP. Then I found out that 5.0 was the only version before, and that was the professional version. 6.0 Standard is a geared down version of 5. Ok, so it has some additional features, but it is missing even more of them.
So what's the skinny on the deal? For what I paid for a new 5 that is the full program, unregistered, and upgradeable, plus what I would have to pay here at Amazon for the 6 Professional Upgrade, I saved 80 bucks, and wound up with both versions 5 and 6 pro. Which as I mentioned are both professional versions. If I bought 5 and upgraded to 6 standard, I would only spend a little more for both versions. (About 4 percent more for standard, and about 20 percent less for professional) That way if 6 standard turned out to be as bad as many were saying it is, I would have 5 also.
In the final analysis, I am using 5 and am super excited about the new capabilities that Adobe Acrobat gives you. I'm hoping that by the time I get a new machine with XP on it, Adobe will come out with 6.something, or a second edition of 6 etc. with the fixes built in.
I'm not the only one to come to this conclusion. I noticed in the sales rank at the time I bought it and wrote this review, that 5 was outselling 6. Also I noticed that in the "Those who bought 5 also bought this" section, it had a special note that said, 47% of the people who bought 5 also bought the 6 upgrade. If your running XP, 2000, or NT, get them both. That way all the bases are covered.
Check out the reviews on 5 you'll be surprised how everybody raves about it. To be perfectly honest with you, if I had an XP machine, I would have ordered the 6 upgrade at the same time. Hope this helps. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Nagging Bugs from CS Not Fixed In CS2
Very disappointing release!I have been a GoLive user for going on two years now and after a long waiting period, CS2 is finally upon us.Unfortunately, CS2 did not herald the bug fixes and core improvements so many GoLive users have been waited for.

The most glaring problem is that GoLive CS2 still does not have a history feature.Even ridiculously simple functions like previewing your in-development pages make it impossible to revert to a previous state and undue any mistakes.Perform a find/replace and again, once you commit to the replace you cannot back out of this change and revert to an earlier state.

What is the point of previewing your webpage if you can't go back and correct a mistake? It is this kind of blatant oversight that damns GoLive to being a subpar program that just doesn't feel as intuitive or polished as other Adobe products.

There have been a number of improvements (such as an advanced CSS library) but small tweaks cannot make you overlook the fact that at its core, GoLive CS2 is a buggy and fundamentally broken product that fails to deliver on every level.

Another poor showing. When will Adobe get this right? Not worth the money as a stand alone product and certainly not worth upgrading from CS. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Spyless !!
All the bells and whistle's are here but it doesn't detect or remove much of anything just like all the other spyware programs I"ve tried. I think the best software for spyware to come is going to be from McAfee.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product
This product is the best of the lot. I was blown away at its flash interface and ease of use. Nice work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Performs As Expected
Although I had no SpyWare detected, the product does a quick scan and performs seamlessly without any glitches. The installation is easy for the novice--prompts are clear and easily understood.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Perfect, But Pretty Good
The software installs fairly easily, and it did remove a number of spyware programs. The on-line technical support is good, although the "helper" got befuddled when he could not solve my problem with recurrent pop-ups. I sent them diagnostic information so their software engineers could evaluate the problem. The software is better than Ad-Aware (which is free from lavasoft.com), but I am not yet convinced it is worth $25 plus shipping. The jury is still out . . .

1-0 out of 5 stars Buggy product, no support, bad move.
I recommend NOT buying this product. Its very crash prone, the company is a shell company based in the Philipines that will refuse to help you.

Bad risk, avoid! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As good as ever
Various versions of Zone Alarm have been protecting my desktop for a couple of years now, and I see no reason to change my choice of firewall software in the foreseeable future.

As a frequenter of Internet security websites (such as the excellent www.grc.com), I was first introduced to the powerful, yet simple firewall known for its ease of configuration, and rock solid protection. I am not an employee of Zone Labs, nor do I receive any compensation for my endorsement. I am simply a satisfied customer who truly believes in the product.

Zone alarm was the first firewall software on the market to offer true "internet stealth." or a close as one can reasonably hope to achieve in cyberspace. Nothing short of disconnecting your pc from the net offers total protection, but Zone Alarm offers your best defense.

Firewalls in general have been notorious for they're hard to configure nature. Most novice users find that the software seems to do its job too well, blocking things that they may wish to use. For most of these users, choosing the "medium" security setting seems to offer the best balance of security vs. freedom. I've always kept mine on the highest settings without incident, but other reviewers here have voiced concerns that doing so hindered such things as online games.

For the most part, Zone Alarm is easy to use, but like any other software, a little investigation on your part will go a long way. The tutorial is great for walking first timers through the paces, and I still take the time to look it over with each new release of the product.

In addition to offering protection from break-ins, Zone Alarm has a couple other nice features such as built in ad blocking, and email file attachment protection for added piece of mind.

In all, the product is excellent in all respects, and does what it is supposed to do... protect your computer. I give it the game boi's highest recommendation.

1-0 out of 5 stars XP Users Beware!
I do not recommend either the download from web version or this boxed version.

Zone Alarm caused Windows XP Professional system errors (that caused my computer to memory dump and shutdown). The firewall and virus did not detect late June 2004 virus, which corrupted my computer. After extensive research on tech blog boards, I found that the software was the cause of my system failures / errors.

While not the only effective firewall and virus package out there, I personally found Norton easier to use and effective. I recommend free download of Stinger tool (do a web search on Google). I also do not recommend MacFee which the Sasser C & F virus did not detect - even with daily updates.

When all else fails, have the information nearby on how to reload your operating system (Dell has it on their site). In addition, keep latest worm removal tools on a memory stick or CDROM just in case your firewall does not catch the latest bug.

My first two virus invasions, I was able to use removal tools available free on the web. The last one (late June) I could only remove the invader by reformatting my memory stick and reinstalling my operating system.

If your system begins dragging, there is a good possibility that is has a virus! Be prepared.

2-0 out of 5 stars ZoneAlarm Pro "User"
I've had ZoneAlarm Pro for about 18 months on my home computer. Unfortunately, some of the recent upgrades to the product now block me from accessing my HP printer. I checked on the internet and quite a few other people are having the same problem. I put ZoneAlarm Pro on my work computer and it caused connectivity problems and the IT folks at work needed to remove the application. I can no longer use the product because of the problems it causes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Home protection !
I Love Zone Alarm, for home systems. When I install an O.S., I immediately insatll Norton's Anti-virus & Zone Alarm, before connecting the computer to the internet. Then, as each application asks permission to use the connection to the internet, I either Accept or Decline the request. For a couple of days, this can be a bit annoying, and frustrates people who want to quickly show you something on the internet--but, overall this is a good thing. If you take a few days to Install, Update and configure Zone Alarm, on a home system, you Rarely find any Spyware or Adware in the system (unless you click the wrong buttons or download things you chould't from the internet). I have been *very* pleased with Zone Alarm--even if it frustrates my friends.

Personally, I would rather take a little extra time to Accept or Deny a program's access to the internet, than wasting all the time it takes to clean-up a system that is infested with Spyware, Adware, etc.

Sometimes, I must spend over an hour removing Spyware, Adware and restarting virus protection, remotely, on corporate systems (that are running McAffee and a dummed-down firewall).

One thing people need to realize is that A.V. protection is just ONE of the major requirements for running a Windows system. Currently, if you are not running A.V. protection, a Firewall (!!!), Microsoft Updates and "Spybot Search & Destroy" (or a similar Spyware / Adware removal tool that is well-tested), your system is destined for Doom.

A good combination, for great protection, is : "Norton Antivirus 2004 Professional," by Symantec & "Zone Alarm." However, if you do not do the Microsoft Updates, your system will be toast, regardless, and you can plan on a lot of O.S. re-installations.

I also recommend using a Router with a built-in firewall, in combination with Zone Alarm, but the average person needs at-least Zone Alarm.

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent firewall until the latest release...
I would have to say this is one of the better firewalls out there*. I've done some research between ZA (ZoneAlarm), Norton, BlackIce, Tiny, and Sygate. ZA seemed to be the most stable, had the highest user ratings, and good set of features for the money. They even have a free version (trimmed down somewhat of course).

*The caveat to this review is that the latest version -v5.0.590.015, is the most unstable version of software I've ever used. It caused all sorts of problems on my system and a lot of wasted time. I've been up to their support forum and there are TONS of other users with all different types of problems with the latest version. I'm pretty disappointed with the QA that went into that version - seems like there wasn't any. I've had ZA since its 3.x release (about a year or so) and up to this point have been pretty pleased.

Rating up to the latest release - solid "A"
Rating for the latest release - "D-" and that might be generous.

If you're planning on picking up ZA, just wait for the next release. ... Read more
