3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad good for some tasks
This is a pretty good product if you have LPs or other music sources you've encoded to MP3.I tried it for music I recorded off the radio onto my MP3 player.

The problem with it is that it doesn't allow you to split tracks by selecting sections of it. So if you have a song, like some of Tori Amos' tunes, that have silent pauses during the track, the auto-splitter built into the program will break 1 song into multiple MP3 files. You can go back and join them together but that's a pain.If it gave you a visual mapping of the track so you could highlight sections you want, it would vastly improve the program.

Other problem with it is you can't add the MP3 tags in the program. You have to save the MP3s and then add the Tags using MusicMatch or other player.

So, not bad for tasks like recording LPs where you already know the start/stop times of the tracks. Not nearly sufficient for breaking mixes or large MP3s that you don't have the break time for songs for.

Microsoft typically supplements its operating systems with a retail grab bag of utilities and entertainment-oriented applications called Microsoft Plus. For Windows XP, it has released not one but two such packages. The latest, Microsoft Plus Digital Media Edition, sports nearly a dozen perks, toys and tools for those who use their PC as a multimedia companion. Though some will find the program packs its fair share of incidental "fluff", anyone into photos, video or music will undoubtedly find several components both useful and enjoyable.

Digital camera buffs will quickly take to Photo Story, wherein they can organize their favorite pictures in slideshow format, add narration, and create a dynamic sense of motion by manually or automatically zooming or panning across each shot. The end result is flowing and compelling and far less stagnant than a standard still presentation.

The program also has plenty of goodies for music fans, including Analog Recorder, a clever utility that transcribes audio in real time from traditional sources such as cassettes and 8-tracks (cables not included), organizes them into playlists, and efficiently removes pops and hiss via technology licensed from respected pro audio veteran Syntrillium Corp. Slightly less impressive is CD Label Maker, which offers a standard selection of CD labels and templates but unfortunately emblazons a Microsoft Plus logo onto each one. Party Mode stretches your Windows Media Player to fill the entire screen and displays customizable marquee announcements and animations, and the aptly named Audio Converter converts MP3 and WAV files to space-efficient WMA files.

Arguably Digital Media Edition’s most disposable feature is Plus Dancer, a selection of minuscule live action pop-up dancers who cavort on command across the desktop. Conversely, the practical Sync & Go allows users of pocket PCs to enjoy their favorite PC content on their portable. Microsoft rounds out this eclectic package with several tidbits and novelties, including a variable interval alarm clock, eight mediocre Windows Media Player skins, and fifty additional transitions and visual effects for Microsoft’s free downloadable video editor, Windows Movie Maker. --Gord Goble ... 3-0 out of 5 stars "A" Plus!?... Well.........................
If your computer meets the minimum specs, yes even those in tiny print, then you will most likely enjoy the enhancements this adds to your computer. Missing that 16 MB video card, don't bother with Plus!.

Like screensavers? What about 3-D? How about trying 3-D Screensavers! Plus! pack will add these new screensavers onto your computer and let the fun begin as you watch fish swim in a realistic aquarium or a circus type scene play before your eyes...

If you're a gamer, the bowling game is GREAT... The only problem is that it is a light edition, so to unlock its full functionality you'll have to pay! The labyrinth game is great and quite difficult to do, will keep you playing for hours!

The themes are good if you use themes... Remember that space theme from ME? Its back in a revamped fashion! Also there are themes for an aquarium and some other interesting ones... Personally I don't like the themes!

The new enhancements to Media Player are OK, but are not really worth the difficulty of configuring. Do you really want to give commands to your computer with your voice? Catch a cold, and this functionality won't work anyway...

Overall this is an OK package, but not one that I would spend the money on. After buying this, I was sorry... I won't make the same mistake again!

2-0 out of 5 stars Non functional without downloads, Not worth the hassle
Just bought it not worth the hassle

Its not very functional without tonnes of MS downloads so dont buy it if you have a 56kb modem like me. I dont want to have to download a tonne of updates, I want functional out of the box.

Product Activation should not be on products this cheap, its a waste of my time. I have no problem with activation on Windows and Office because theyre high value products and at least you get to try them out before activating... This though is a hassle.

The digital music converion program only converts to WMA, I expect at least one alternative format such as WAV or MP3. Bad software in a pretty box.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great program
I don't really use most of the programs in this package...except Photo Story. Photo Story is incredible! I have done video CDs for my parents' wedding anniversary, seniors graduating from high school (we have two seniors in our private school and will use the stories at graduation), a teacher appreciation banquet, etc. Just hook your DVD player to a projector, and voila! You're ready to go. The ability to add music really makes the stories moving. My only complaint is that you are limited to one music track, so if the story is long, the song just repeats itself over and over. Hopefully, with the next upgrade, they'll add the ability to use more than one music track. That's the only improvement I see that it needs. Great for creating memories for your family and friends!

4-0 out of 5 stars Want more themes?
If you want lots of themes you can try TGT softs Style XP.
Style XP gave me lots of themes and can be found at http://www.tgtsoft.com/

2-0 out of 5 stars not really a must...
Although many of its stuff are pretty fun to use and creative, but after all, it is not really a "must" have item. and though its only 18 bucks, still seems a bit expensive for its actual usage. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Quality, Full of Features
I'm always impressed with the quality of Adobe software products and Audition is no exception.

The product is incredibly poweful, with gobs of useful effects and approachable controls. Normalizing a track is very easy and effective. The filters and equalizers are very easy to use, though a little tricky to use. The learning curve for applying most filters is mitigated because they can be applied to a stream while the stream is playing; their effect isn't always immediate, but close enough that you're not stuck changing, listening, changing back, and waiting.

The graphics and the user interface presentation are top-notch; the program paints waveforms and scrolls very quickly, zooming conveniently and highlighting and drawing flawlessly. There are a few small bugs in the UI (like "Cool Edit" remaining in some captions, and some windows receiving a flashy custom painting scheme, but others not). None of these problems gets in the way of productivity, however.

There's a whole CD full of loops in the package, and even more can be downloaded from Adobe online for free!

Some of the program's stregnths are some of its weaknesses. It's incredible power is intimidating, so plan on spending some time learning and playing with the options before you feel comfortable using them. The program is also very resource hungry; WAV files take up tons of disk space, so you'll want a fast disk subsystem and plenty of memory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice to use, and powerful muiti-track audio editor.
Adobe's Audition is probably the nicest and cleanest looking audio editing desktop environment I've seen. I liked the way in which you can import a CD track directly without having to launch a CD player beforehand, and the 'Save As' options are plentiful.

You also have 128 tracks onto which you can have music and sound effects for when you're making digital videos, and are able to synchronize these tracks with an editing application such as Adobe's Premiere, to get around its usable. but limited. audio capabilities.

Audition can also apply many temporal and tonal effects.

Not so very long ago you needed racks of outboard gear including timecode locked multi-track tape-machines costing tens of thousands of dollars to do the basics of what can be done with Audition. I look back at that time and am frankly amazed at how much today's powerful PCs allied to inexpensive software can do for those interested in audio and digital film production without breaking the bank.

This is a very good and sophisticated product that goes beyond the basics that many people would require, but if they are anticipating the need to go beyond a basic editing application, Audition would be a great choice.

Be sure to use a fast, up-to-date computer, with lots of hard drive space - preferably as separate hard drives attached to independent IDE or RAID controllers - if you intend to be doing complex projects. Also keep the drives defragged to keep it all humming along.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff
This is great stuff. This is essentially a port of Cool Edit Pro, but may undergo changes in the future. This appears to fit well in the Adobe family of offerings. I use this to take MP3 recordings from church sermons and do manipulations (trim, mono, de-noise, filter, normalize) to make them sound much better. For single track work it may be overkill (Cool Edit 2000) may suffice. The 128 tracks are very nice to have handy. With the extensive number of (free!) loops online, it is great. Setting up tracks and loops is easy and intuitive. ... Read more

Borrowing heavily from respected multimedia authority Sonic Foundry, Screenblast Music Studio is an ideal composition application for PC music hobbyists. Whether you're arranging your own tunes, remixing and adding personal touches to existing songs, merging video with audio, or simply burning compilation CDs, Screenblast Music Studio delivers.

The Music Studio package consists of several components, the most prominent of which is Screenblast ACID Deluxe, a simplified version of Sonic Foundry's ACID Pro. Loops are short, prerecorded musical passages that may be pieced together to create original, royalty-free tunes, and ACID Deluxe's highly intuitive timeline interface allows you to quickly and easily "paint" these loops into complex block-rocking beats of unlimited size and scope. Hundreds of topnotch loops have been included for your enjoyment.

You can later enhance your compositions by recording vocals or traditional instruments (up to two simultaneous tracks at a time), adding reverb and distortion effects, or tweaking the pitch or panning of individual tracks. You may even want to remix songs from your favorite artists or add prerecorded movie clips or graphics to fashion a homegrown music video. After you've assembled all the parts, you can save your masterwork in a variety of formats compatible with both computerized and standalone audio players, or post it online at the Screenblast Web site.

Also featured in the Music Studio suite is Screenblast's sophisticated media player and CD burning application, Siren Jukebox Deluxe. With Siren Jukebox Deluxe, you can record audio and data CDs, rip music tracks to your computer in WAV, WMA, or MP3 formats, and, of course, play audio CDs. The application includes integrated EQ, reverb, and time-stretching parameters, the latter of which allows you to play a song at various speeds while maintaining its correct pitch--an invaluable aid for musicians.

Screenblast Music Studio combines an assortment of semi-professional tools, a slick interface, and a cool mix of loops at a reasonable price, and is therefore recommended to home-based audiophiles and musicians. --Gordon Goble ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have Acid Music 3.0
Do not bother with this program the same program different name.I would highly suggest this if you do not have Acid Music 3.0.One of the most stable music programs around.Alot better then any Magix program I have used. The publishing to the net is unbeatable and a great file rendering program too boot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff
It's great software at a great price. I bought the program so I could rip and burn CD's but soon found that using the ACid program (2 software apps come in the box- Acid and Siren...I think these are the Sonic Foundry engines)I could also add a soundtrack to my home movies. The box also came with audio clips that I used to sequence a Blues song and that was fun too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic New Sony Product
Creating music has never been easier. The interface is very clean and easy to follow. This is a great product if you want to make music. The editing tools are great. This program even comes with some cool loops to get one started. Check this product out! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars You're On Your Own
The power and capabilities of this industry standard audio production application are awesome. Its versatility and potential for a multitude of recording and compositional projects is exciting and inspiring. And its notorious reputation for a steep learning curve ..... well earned.

What used to exist in four versions (Logic Audio, Silver, Gold & Platinum in ascending order) has been simplified to two; Logic Pro and Logic Express. And that's the only thing simple about it. I'm not sure of the Pro version (out of my affordability range at the moment), but this package has the feel of being somewhat rushed to market; there are no tutorials to speak of included on any of the five discs in the box, nor will you find any "guided tour" on any of the printed materials. On the documentation disc is a 496-page PDF you can print out, and at the time of this writing, that is the only publication you will find anywhere that specifically covers Logic Express ..... and it is a reference guide. Not exactly accommodating of Apple/Emagic to just toss purchasers of their software into the deep end like this and just let them flounder. On the other hand, releasing it this way may give the more determined of us that much more of a competitive edge .....

Missing guidance aside, I do not regret this purchase. With a little help from the Apple Pro Training title on Logic 6 (available separately), I've managed to figure out enough of the basics to know how to approach projects. It includes three virtual software tools ("analog" synth, sampler, rhythm machine), ten or so effects plug-ins, as many midi and sample editing options as you'll probably need, a scoring module you can actually print out sheet music from, and if you already have another music creation app like Reason or Garageband, you'll be pretty much set up with your own desktop recording studio. The main caveat I must pass along with this package is, you may save money, but you have your work cut out for you. Good luck. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm impressed.
I just got this program a few days ago; so I am still in the process of becoming familiar with it. At this point I really like what I see. It seems to be quite intuitive. I was initially concerned that the process of learning to use it with facility might be intimidating and frustrating. But my esperiences with it so far give me the impression that even amateurs like myself can master it without getting stressed out.

Here are some things potential buyers need to be aware of:

1)Sound Forge 6.0 has just been issued. I am in the process of upgrading the Sound Forge 5.0 that I just purchased.

2)I heartily recommend the book "Sound Forge Power" by Scott R. Garrigus ... It seems to be very friendly and very helpful. I certainly I am glad I got it.

3)With current CD and DVD burners, you can rip new CD's at incredibly fast speeds. But I was recently speaking with a professional recording engineer; and he told me that for audiophile quality CD's you need to duplicate at slow a speed as possible, preferably 1X or 2X.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best
i use Sound Forge for everything from editing / remixing tracks from CD to creating songs from scratch. aside from multitrack recording, i haven't thought of a single thing that this program can't do with sound. and believe me, i've been trying my hardest to push it to it's limit. if you have even the slightest interest in computer based sound recording, you're really missing out if you don't have this product. it's the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent sound editor
In a search for some way to edit my tapes, records and discs, I have tried several products. I finally stubled onto Sound Forge 4.5. When Sound Forge 5.0 came out, I jumped on it. Sound Forge is easy to use and will do much more than I expected using only a computer. Help is excellent and the program is easy to use. It also has an excellent 'undo' capability. Unless you want to go into professional recording, Sonic Forge will serve you well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nearly everything I need
I have been using Sound Forge since about version 3. New versions don't come out very often, but they are usually worthwhile. The latest version of Sound Forge has the Batch Converter, Acoustic Mirror and Effects Processors included. These were optional extras with the previous versions. So the only extra I needed to buy was Noise Reduction - a plug-in that I use fairly frequently.

There are many digital audio editing programs on the market, but I find that Sound Forge does nearly every thing I need, and I have never been tempted to look elsewhere. Sound Forge has a sizeble set of processes, tools and effects built-in, and recognizes Direct-X plug-ins from other manufacturers. Apart from that, you can convert nearly any known digital audio format to nearly any other.

My interest is computer music, and I use Sound Forge for recording and manipulating sounds. I use Sonic Foundry's Vegas Audio for mixing. Sound Forge is stable, fast, and well equiped. My only small critisism is that extracting sound from CDs and creating CDs could have been a bit more user-friendly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A godsend!
Sound Forge continues with 5.0 to be THE choice for 2 channel mixing. Sonic Foundry, God bless them, took a great program (Sound Forge 4.5) and retooled it into a perfect program. Now included are Acoustic Mirror & XFX 1-3. If you're mixing to CD, video, etc., then you need Sound Forge. Period. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Apple did a good job streamlining this product
With the price jump from around [$$$] for Logic Platinum to around [$$$] for Logic Pro, it's worth while considering that Logic Plat didn't come with any of the soft synths that are built into it. You have to pay an average of between [$$$] for each extra instrument [along with the vocoder and space designer] so the [$$$] price jump isnt bad at all. I bought Logic 6 Platinum and the upgrade price to Pro is worth it and I am very glad that I did NOT buy the seperate instruments. If you already did, then the upgrade might not be as worth it. I can't find too much info on what else is new or improved with this version. Logic may have a learning curve, but once you learn it inside and out, it's probably the most powerful Audio/MIDI package available. If only audio is your primary concern and you want something simple, then ProTools should be considered. But if you want total control over everything, then Logic is the way to go. Id say Logic for composers and more complex music, and ProTools for bands looking to record. Logic is also compatible with TDM hardware systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a no brainer for those using Logic on the Mac
If you already have Logic 5 or 6 on your Mac, this is a super deal. You get all of the emagic plugins and soft synths--even Space Designer, which was about $400 street a little while ago. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Whether you're an old MIDI wizard who's moving up to more advanced sound work or a studio recorder who wants to exploit the PC, Sonic Foundry's Vegas is the best choice for professional-quality multitrack media editing. Using an intuitive Windows-based control system, you'll manipulate sound files (pretty much any format you can imagine), name and fiddle with each track to your heart's content, and apply effects exactly when and where you want them.

The timing mechanisms are smart and easy to use--choose the right tracking option for your project, add markers at any point, and even look at the edit detail list for a comprehensive look at your mix--down to the hundredth of a second. No matter what you're developing, Vegas will support you: pipe it out through 26 Master and Aux outputs, 32 DirectX sends, or streaming files in Windows Media Technologies 4.0 or RealNetworks G2 format. The interface is clean and functional; most windows snap together and come up only when you call them so you won't have to brush aside a swarm of floaters to see your tracks. Support for dual monitors and dual processors adds an extra kick of power, and the unlimited undo/redo feature makes backtracking and repetitive tasks a snap. The auto-crossfade with nine options and audio/video scrub gives you vastly improved performance over other software packages and traditional editing equipment. Good-looking, easy to use, and all the bells and whistles of a pro studio--Vegas is a winner. --Rob Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Vegas Pro - the mixer/editor windows users needed
Vegas Pro is everything the manufacturer says it is and more. Key for me was that it is a non-destructive editor, meaning if you want to cut, you can do so instantly, then only render when you're ready to output. If you're cutting narrative especially, this alone is worth the price. It also scrubs, great for cutting. It is also a fully featured mixer for windows. If protools has not worked for you because it's mac, or because it uses it's own unique conventions, you'll like Vegas' adherence to windows conventions. It behaves like it ought to, it's easy to use (if you understand the concepts of audio engineering such as signal paths, bus structures, etc.) and is totally a professional tool of great utility and value. I use it with a digidesign audiomedia III, but any high quality sound card will do. I'm running it on NT4.0/SP5 with no problems. ... Read more
