5-0 out of 5 stars Acid is hands down is the best Audio Remixer
Like Vegas 4.0, Acid 4.0 Pro has nearly the same layout, but is missing the video features. But that's not what the program is for. With Acid Pro 4.0 you can turn your songs easily into remixes (with some loops provided of the internet of course) and make your remix sound like the remixes you hear on your local pop and R&B radio station on saturday nights. And for me, I've always wanted to be someone who can do that, and that dream can now come true. Acid is meant strictly for remixing, or composing music, not editing. That's the downside with acid, is that Editing the music is it's worse quality. But that's not the reason anyone uses it, that's not the reason I use it, it's simply just to become an artist and make my work recognized. And after being experienced for about 1 month with this program, I noticed that my music was becoming better, my friends even began to like the remixes I have done, and now I can compose my own music, and it sounds very original, clear, and cool.

3-0 out of 5 stars The original solution for old iPod on Windows 98SE
Note: The new iPod has both Mac and Windows support.

I like XPlay. It does what it says and it does it well. You can even use it to update the firmware on your iPod -- just like you can with a Mac. The only thing it's missing is an MP3 encoder to rip CDs directly. You'll need separate ripping software.

But that's a small inconvenience when you consider XPlay takes something that is Mac-only and makes it work seamlessly with your PC.

Pros:
Makes the old Mac-only iPod work with FireWire enabled Win98 and WinME PCs
A good plug-n-play solution for iPod and Windows
You can use your iPod with a Mac, too!
Allows you to manage music collections
Edits ID3 tags
Creates playlists

Cons:
No CD ripper to make MP3s
You need FireWire (IEEE 1394, iLink) on your PC (you may need to buy a FireWire card or a 4-6 pin adapter cable)
Apple has released iTunes for Win2K and WinXP as a free download
The new iPod has both Mac and Windows support built in

The bottom line is you can download iTunes for Win2K and WinXP for free. But, if you have a Windows 98 or ME PC, XPlay is a good solution that is much less expensive than a new Windows license.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Joke
No one should have to pay money for this.

iPods for Windows should be 100% compatible or else return it.

Don't pay money for this software; it's a joke.

5-0 out of 5 stars xplay or musicmatch
i used music match for the first 9 months of owning my ipod and i liked it alot, but i noticed that when trying to save some songs or add some songs to my ipod, it would select some of the songs and not move them. it also would mess up the way the song was written so the ipod wouldnt be able to read it and play it. xplay has worked flawlessly as just a program for adding songs and removeing them. it does not change the format of the song and it does not make my ipod skip songs the way music match does. music match messes up the ipod, thats all there is to it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs improvement - not necessary at all with new iPODs
If you just bought or are thinking of buying a new model iPod , save your money - you dont need this at all. A lot of people have touted XPlay as better than Musicmatch but I disagree. Most people try Musicmatch and don't bother to download the tutorial files which show you in detail all the great options available in MM. I have both and to be fair, xPlays only advantage with the older iPods was that you could use a Mac iPod on windows pcs with XPlay. Now that Apple has introduced the 30 gig and smaller iPod, its not necessary as there is not a Mac or seperate windows Ipod anymore. Whatever you computer you use, Apple has included both iTunes and MM, and the newest ipod recognizes the computer you plug it into, eliminating the big need for xPlay. So since the MM and iTunes come included free with the iPod I recommend saving your money because there is no real need for xPlay unless you have an older Mac iPod that you want to use on a Windows pc. That is the only good reason for purchasing xPlay. Please take the time to learn Musicmatch - the supertagging feature is great and there are a lot of neat features I haven't listed as well. Enjoy your iPod and see my review of the newest 30 gig model.

1-0 out of 5 stars What this product could really do
I'm a PC user. Don't hate me. It's what I work with and the platform I develop for. I'm using a new XP laptop at home and have been dumping many of my CDs onto it to listen to. The format I chose to save them as is WMA. It sounds great and creates files that are half the size of MP3s, saving drive space and making file management easier.

Numerous products (MP3 Players, iPod-like Jukeboxes, etc) are accommodating WMA format. I realize that this is a proprietary Windows format and it doesn't make sense for Apple to support it on the iPod. But why make a product like XPlay.. which should enable me, the Windows user, to use an iPod.. without supporting my habits?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems this product doesn't offer the ability to convert WMA files to MP3 on-the-fly before transferring them to the iPod. That would be truly useful. That would be a product made for the Windows user. THAT would encourage this PC-user to buy a Mac product. The iPod is cool. I'd love to have one. My PC has FireWire so I could take full advantage of it. It, and this software, just unfortunately don't meet my needs.

I'm looking at a Creative Labs Nomad Zen instead, which doesn't feature the PIM software that the iPod does, but is cheaper too. It would be nice if the iPod could support my Outlook Contacts and Calendar as well. I haven't seen anything that says whether or not this is definitively true. (The PC Support on the iPod site is 1 paragraph long)

UPDATE: I use iTunes. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars sketchy manual, but still an excellent multitracker for XP
When I bought this software, I was under the impression that it concentrated on multitrack audio recording.I was right, but, by reading the manual, you'd never know it.There are so many references to the video aspect of this program, it's frequently difficult distinguishing the audio part.Thank goodness the program doesn't support MIDI.

I am managing to find most of the the information I need, however, it took me a long time to figure out how to set up an audio project for maximum efficiency and portability. You see, by default, Vegas will dump all the recordings from all your projects into one big community file/folder. If, when saving, you use the "Copy all media with project" checkbox, Vegas will copy EVERY recording in the community recordings file, regardless of what project they come from (GigaBytes of files!).I finally figured out you need to manually make a separate folder for each project's recordings and specify their paths in the properties menu.Maybe it's just common knowledge in the digital recording world, because I've yet to read any documentation regarding this.

I've also discovered that the "Media Pool" allows you to automatically delete any unused recordings/events/takes at the click of a button - what a great organizational feature!

Other than the transitional manual, this program is relatively simple and has every feature you need to make high quality/professional multitrack recordings.

Out of print, it can be found on Ebay. Don't worry if it doesn't include a paper manual because it's in PDF form on the disk.It works perfectly on the Windows XP operating system!

4-0 out of 5 stars if only it had midi
this product is dead easy to use and solid as a rock. everything works the way you think it will and the sound is great. my only wish is that it had some kind of midi implementation - somewhere between nuendo and cakewalk/cubase/logic. there are some things i just want to keep in midi for as long as possible prior to mixdown. if it had this....it would be 6 stars. as it is - i can't imagine life without.

5-0 out of 5 stars powerful and easy to use multi-track recording
I use this to do multi-track hard disk recording of guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. My needs are fairly basic. E.g., record simultaniously on multiple inputs, overdub multiple takes of complex sections, add effects, occasionally splice and rearrange things, etc. I have no need for sequencing (the ability to record, playback, and manipulate keyboard MIDI events), which Vegas doesn't provide.

Before buying it, I spent a reasonable amount of energy researching what the best software was for this purpose and wound up focusing on Cakewalk, Cubase, and Vegas. I was initially drawn to Cakewalk by claims that it had more market share, but encountered several people who felt it was something that serious users would outgrow. I used it a bit, did not bond with it, and moved on to Cubase. Cubase was very powerful and visually striking, but I found its user interface to be a cryptic and confusing obstacle. I used it for a while, but was discontent enough to switch to Vegas.

I am quite happy with Vegas and find that it provides the features I want packaged in an elegant and well thought out user interface. It allows me to focus on the music without unnecessary distractions and I would not hesitate to recommend it.

FYI, one thing I did not look at is ProTools. This is what is most commonly used in professional studios, but it seemed to be only available for the Mac. I heard it was being ported to the PC though, so I would consider investigating it. ... Read more

Reviews (1)

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Awesome
I have reviewed Movie Edit Pro 2004 and this program is A LOT better. The main thing that impressed me was that stability of the program, as well as Magix eliminating errors. It preloads the media files for you when you are importing or editing, to reduce skippy playback. When I say errors, I mean that with MEP2004, I had an error every movie I did. It was really annoying. MEP10 has eleminated those errors and provided more useful help in the help section.

I love the new features! Surround sound: Oh yeah!. Now I can use my audigy 5.1 card when editing. The look of the program has improved to make it more modern. HD video and 16:9 sounds really cool. The new story maker is actually really cool. There are a ton of interesting effects and presets that you could use. I haven't yet tried to use the TV tuner part of the program, but that sounds pretty interesting. DV to MPEG2 sounds good because you can take camcorder footage and convert to MPEG while importing. Okay, now the DVD software that comes with this is not the best, but they have added things like the ability to move the titles and buttons anywhere on the menu, as well as 3D fonts. I haven't yet tried track-freezing, but it sounds like you can edit easier that way.

Alright, now lets look at the price of this software. 60 bucks! For an editor this good! Thats amazing. This program supports features that almost no competitors have in the $50-$100. I think they should have at least made it $100. Whatever. Works for me. Definately a Best Buy. Magix has stepped it up a notch. This is good software!

5-0 out of 5 stars Works WAY better than Roxio
I was sick of the multiple "coasters" (unusable disks) created by Roxio Easy CD Creator 5. I needed some reliable software that would also allow me to do some basic audio editing (add fades, adjust volume, and make simple cuts to audio tracks). I did several searches online for software comparisons and came up with very little helpful information.

Finally I just went to the store & picked up something that looked good: Cakewalk Pyro 2003. And I have to say, I'm impressed! Aside from a bit of a learning curve for the uninitiated (in order to burn an audio CD to play in regular stereos, you must first put your tracks in wav format, a fact that isn't readily obvious to those used to Roxio's setup), this software works, and it works well. So far I've burned about 7 CDs, audio and data, with no flaws and a much easier time setting up the disc to burn than with Roxio. (You don't have to babysit the burning process - since you rip the tracks first, then tell the software what to burn, you don't have to sit there and switch CDs for an hour.) The CD quality produced is flawless, though I've basically been mixing my current CD collection onto other CDs, so I can't speak for those attempting to put their LP collection on CD.

I'd highly recommend this software for those who want to expand the capabilities of the CD burning software that came with their computers. This software works well, is fairly easy to learn, and produces great quality discs. The price is reasonable, and you definitely get your money's worth.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid and reliable burning software
Cakewalk Pyro is the other half of my home recording duo, the other half being Cakewalk SONAR. Having spent a good year with Roxio's CD Creator, I decided to give Pyro a try since I was using Cakewalk's multitrack recording software already.

Users of Roxio will find the controls on Pyro to be more straightforward, the interface more intuitive, and the reliability much higher. As other reviewers have said, not one CD burned with Pyro failed to burn properly. And the real-time track layout is a definite plus for this program.

Features are fairly simple with no real ability to edit waveforms other than cropping and fading, both of which occur at increasingly large intervals depending on the length of the file being edited. One way past this is to take a given file, break it up into smaller pieces and then reassemble them in the track layout. Re-integration of this kind is flawless and is a creative way around the few limitations the program has.

Cakewalk has been around for a long time and continues to improve the quality of its music software. With any luck, some of the features we editors had hoped for will be available in a future updated version of Pyro. All things considered, thought this may not be the most feature-packed burning program, it is by far the most reliable and user-friendly. Pick it up if you've been looking for a better burning program than what comes with Windows XP (which, by the way, the program works flawlessly on.

2-0 out of 5 stars Confusing Interface
All the reviews indicated that this software was easy to use. I found the opposite. Maybe I'll get used to Pyro but I doubt it.
I should have bought something else.

4-0 out of 5 stars Burn 4ever
I won't lie to you it took me about an hour to get it.Im the typical male who wont read the instructions to anything. But even so I got it down in about an hour or so.Im use to the Roxio burner, and Pyro is day to night to that burner. But once I got eveything down it was smooth sailing from there. Of the recordings I have made I have had no problems at all. Pyro lets you fade, volume control etc. The only drawback is that it is a little slow burning compared to Roxio. Great for those new to burning also.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome. Just love it!
As a support person for over 200 PC's, I got sick and tired of the enduser's complaining about Roxio EZCD 5.
The only thing EZ about it was how "easy" it was to cause me
more grief.
Upgrading to EZCD "Platinum edition" fixed most of the enduser's complaints.
But the EZCD that came with the CDRW drives was supposed to "save us money". [Meaning that we bought a certain cdrw drive which provided a copy of EZCD, supposedly saving us the price of buying a cdrw software burner package.Instead we had to buy upgrades, meaning the Platinum edition, which isn't cheap].

Having seen the problems with EZ, I bought Pyro for my own use.
I have used Pyro 1 and now Pyro 2003.

The only thing I did not like about Pyro (which is an issue with the maker of pyro, Cakewalk) was their upgrade polcy.
A lot of companies will let you upgrade to the latest version, at a reduced price.
