2-0 out of 5 stars MCP Review
It did have it's little glitches, but when it worked it work very well, I had to move up to Music Center Live when I changed my operating system to Windows 2000Pro, and it had problems with the effects not working when I would finish a mix.
My biggest complaint would be the lack of support from Data Becker, I wrote them twice asking simple little questions , and never got an answer, I think I'll try Cakewalk next.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you thought Quantum physics was easy...
I have Techno EJay, and I wanted to get a few more options (cut and paste, fading, etc...) With Techno two hours after I had opened the box I had written a song that sounded rather professional, I was very pleased. With Data Becker's Music Center Pro they've made things that should be Easy and Simple so Complex it's just frustrating. Instead of the 1 inch thick book it comes with how about including a College course? It may be the best music software on earth but if I can't use it what good is it to me? You finally get a little music going and then the software crashes... stupid, stupid, stupid...

1-0 out of 5 stars Where's the exterminator, this programs buggy
Other than creating a new sequence file, the program was easyto use. More functions could be listed in the drop downmenus. However, problems started right after installation. The programcrashed when importing an audio file. Re-installed the program and itworked fine. It would crash when closed after importing a midi fileinto the default screen. No big deal. Selecting a new file whenstarting the program fixed this issue. First time I saved a song, thenext time I opened up the file all the tracks were missing. Found afix for this. However, 1 hour down the drain. Copied all the waves inthe default save folder. The program uses shortcuts to the wave files, which is moronic. Everything seemed good. I had twelve tracks ofaudio pieced together. Then I tried opening up my song(which had beenopening fine,) the program crashed. Restarted the computer. Stillcrashed. 4 hours of work down the drain. Finally after hours of tryingdifferent preferences. I figured out a fix for this. Move the wavefiles to another folder, and open the sequence. Finally the... program opened up my song. You can bet that I am not going to usethis program for future recordings. The stability of a program whichis used to create ... better than this. It's definitly not worth themoney I paid for it. You'd be better off with ... As a matter of factI will not buy software that has Data Becker on it. All they do isdistribute the program. If they would have tested it, they would haveknown it was a piece of garbage. As a matter of fact, I was surprisedwhen I went to their website and there wasn't a patch. After all theproblems I was having and not one mention of these issues. There FAQwas a joke... END

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of money...
I am an experienced musician but a beginner as far as MIDI and electronic music goes (although i am much more than a PC literate). This CD has been a waste of my money and time. The user guide is useless, it just describes one by one all the menus (Like "New File": click here to open a new file...). Zero added value. I haven't been able to make it work. It is like a nice Ferrari without a motor. I wonder if the unique 5 star review has been written by the guy who wrote the software.

Anyway i'm returning this software today...

PS: i wanted to put 0 star but amazon did not allow me...

5-0 out of 5 stars This is truly a professional software
Now the guys from DATA BECKER have come out with Music Center Pro and have made some decent adjustments in style and technology. The terrible red interface is gone - now it's all silver and metal, the program is full 32-bit (now the filenames can be longer than 8 digits - thank you) and there are a lot of features that you normally have to pay much, much more for:

Included Direct-X Effects support

Graphic Effects interface

The number of tracks (audio and midi) are doubled Video support

3D Spatiauliser (looks good - but I'm not yet sure what's this for)

and a full GM/XG midi support - to be honest, something I've not seen in ANY other package so far.

I was very enthusiastic about MC and MC Pro certainly is a step upwards from there. The price for that kind of software is ridiculously low - but who am I to complain.

It would be great if the other DATA BECKER software would be up to that standard, which it sadly is not.

One more: Beginners beware: Buy the original MC first, MC Pro has too many features to make you happy when you're not already into HD-Recording and PC-Music Production. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great place to begin
I bought this software over 2 years ago (peep the date) and have
enjoyed myself tremendously. I was new to music creation with software (actually, i totally new to everything) but i was making music (albeit corny) in no time!

The interface is so easy to use. I don't remember a bunch about trying to learn Home Studio, but I know that the help system (online, and printed book) were very good, and helped a lot.

Home Studio 7 is surprisingly rich in features. After a year i still discovered new features. At this point however, i'm ready to move on to a higher version and/or a professional grade.

One of the coolest things that came with Home Studio 7 was the virtual piano. The Virtual Piano lets you use your PC keyboard as a MIDI input device. That will suffice if you're on a budget and can't buy a keyboard to do this.

Home Studio is also offers wonderful ability to archive your works. There is the nomal .wrk file that you do all your work with. Then there is a .bun file. This File packs all your song's audio along wih the MIDI and what you get is a nice bundle (.bun) that can be taken to any machine and used.

This software also allows you plenty of room to customize it.
You can use your on colors in certain places, and use a gif background. It works on Windows 2000 also. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful for the price - Docs useless
This program took me a long time to learn to use, but it is now my favorite. I can import midis and print music to play in my brass band with only a few clicks. It is a resource hog, so don't use the mimimum system requirements. It runs great in XP on a P4. Use the styles print music for diffent instruments without changing how the midi sounds. Use the qua to get rid of annoying sixteenth note rests. Rather than use the pen tool always use the select tool and right click to enter notes on the score. If you miss, drag the note into place. Warning - don't expect any help from the documentatation - even the font names are in German.

1-0 out of 5 stars MAGIX notation - don't bother
This software only allows one note duration to be displayed per line at any point in the music! If you enter an eighth note and a half note at the same spot, it shows both as an eighth note! The picture on the front is very misleading - the music sample they have shows a half note and quarter notes at the same point and you can't enter it that way. (It plays OK but doesn't look right at all!)

Totally useless for entering music for printing. It only gets one star because there's no such thing as a zero star.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money
This program is THE most user UNfriendly software I've ever seen. The manual was essentially worthless and skipped many important basic points. The tutorial was un-doable. I eventually tossed it aside in frustration and tried to go it alone with the menus. However, the menus are not intuitive and few buttons have mouseovers to tell you what the icons (some undecipherable) mean. This is an exercise in sheer frustration. Old-fashioned pencil and paper beat this program any day. Save your money.

3-0 out of 5 stars good product, bad manual
I have used this software now for a week and am still struggling with it. I think the product is powerful, maybe too many features for my needs, but figuring out how to use it is really tough. The users manual was clearly written by someone for whom English is a second (maybe third) language. If you are willing to make the effort to fight through this, you can do a lot. I have now used the note processor like a word processor to document music I have written and I have entered music from the virtual keyboard. It is so much nicer than my handwriting.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save yourself from a headache
Even the little amount of money paid for this software I consider a waste. It is quicker and easier to simply notate your music on a sheet of paper, and in addition to this it is very limited in terms of what you can and cannot do. Take my advice: save your money and wait until you have enough for another, better program that is A LOT more user friendly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Music Software I have used
i have found band-in-a-box to be a very useful tool for creating backing trcks, learning improvisation and practicing my instrument. the interface may be clunky, but i have found it to be quite intuitive. the video demonstrations make it very easy to learn.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs to be Streamlined
This could have been the best software of its type if only it weren't so clunky to use. Plan to spend A TON of time reading the manual just to get started using this product. the controls are definately not user friendly or intuitive. I've had it for a couple of weeks now and I still can't write what I want to write. Pass over this program and spend your money elsewhere untill the programers make this title easier to use. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best is still the best!!!
Finale introduced computerized music notation combined with MIDI capabilities to us back in the mid-80's and they have continued to raise the bar every year. For serious composers, there really is no other option. Do not take the reviewers that claim Sibelius is better too seriously. Sibelius created a very pretty interface with the ability to perform simple tasks, but it is very limited. Their interface style has limited them from being able to perform nessasary functions (like the ability to undo) and they have painted themselves into a corner in the sense that there is not a lot room to add new features. Most Sibelius users I know gave up Finale after 2 weeks of using it because it didn't have little cartoon characters that popped out and explained everything to them. Creating software is a compromise of power vs. ease of use. Finale has really hit the perfect mark with this version. It continually becomes easier to use with every version but is not willing to compromise its power.

Sibelius, the composer, might have actually used Sibelius, but his copyist would have used Finale!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the BEST!
I have been a Finale user for over ten years and it is quite simply the best music notation software on the market. I have used other products, some extensively, and they do not hold a candle to Finale in terms of capabilities, power and ease of use.

For many years, Finale had a reputation of being the most powerful notation product but not very user-friendly. To a certain extent, this was probably true. I am a composer/arranger and I would spend hours formatting parts extracted from a score, not to mention that it would take hours for the software to extract the parts. With Finale 2003, once I have completed a score, it usually takes less than a minute for the part extraction to run and I have to do very little editing on individual parts before they are ready to print.

MakeMusic (previously Coda Music) has also done a marvelous job with the last two or three Finale releases in making it conform with Microsoft Windows interface standards. Again, when I first started using Finale, it seemed to be a Mac product that had been ported to Windows and there were several non-standard interface elements. That has all changed. If you are a musician and a Windows user, you can be immediately productive with Finale.

Finale 2003's MIDI capabilities are also quite good. My daughter sings and I have produced many accompaniments for her using my MIDI setup. For a number of years, I would use a sequencer for those arrangements. However, for the past three to four years, I have been using Finale, especially when it is a more orchestral-oriented arrangement. In fact, I haven't upgraded my sequencer program in several years since I use Finale almost exclusively now.

Input is also quite easy with Finale. I have completed a marching band arrangement of an orchestral piece while traveling on the highway. I have reached the point where it is sometimes easier and quicker to enter music from the computer keyboard than it is from a MIDI keyboard.

I could go on and on but let me just conclude by saying that by any measure you want to use, Finale is the finest music motation product on the market. It is the gold standard for the professional engraver and hobbyist alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finale Rocks!!
Finale is an awesome program. I am currently using Finale 98d and I love it.

In the music world everyone needs software like this for a different reason so no review can speak for everyone. In my case, my use of music notation software requires that my software supports shaped notehead capability and easy input for shaped noteheads. I find both with Finale. Setting it up for shaped noteheads was not easy but after making a template, it is now a breeze.

You will find Finale somewhat cumbersome or difficult to learn. The reason for this is because it can do anything. There are settings and controls everywhere and finding the right one can be difficult. Finale does come with online documentation (Version 98d did) that you can view using Adobe Acrobat Reader. This documentation is very explanatory and deserves five stars in itself. The only thing the documentation doesn't do is teach you music. For example, you will not find explanations for expressions in the documentation. If your willing to put forth the effort it takes to learn the program, you will love this software.

1-0 out of 5 stars There is indeed only one Finale
To the reviewer from Moscow, ID. - who wants to buy a software application and then have to come back to Amazon and buy extra books written by third party users in order to understand how to use the software? Well the answer is nobody - except Amazon.

And to say that Finale is the gold standard for profesionals is absurd. I am a professional copyist and I much prefer to use Sibelius. I only use Finale when required (I am an expert on both). And when I get Finale files from clients - the first thing I do is import them into Sibelius. Most of the publishers I deal with feel the same way.

5-0 out of 5 stars So simple!
My friend and I were both going to play for church. He and I regularly play trumpet/trombone duets. I have a book of empty staves that you can write in music, and for like the past year we had been using that. So this Sabbath (today) we planned on playing "All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name". He had given me a book of contemporary hymns that had that hymn in it and told me to arrange it so that there would be harmony (as the book only had melodies that were to be played to a cd). So I stayed up the night arranging, and it gets tedious.
So the next day I go to his house. He shows me that he had installed Finale 2003 on his computer. Figuring that my handwriting would be too hard to read at a glance (I was tired), we decided to transcribe it from paper to Finale 2003.
And it was so easy to use! WE didn't even have to look at the manual! I think we finished the whole trumpet/trombone score in about 10-20 minutes (it was actually longer but we practiced in between).
A few flaws: at first we had to dig deep to find where the rests were, as they weren't on the main screen. But after we found them (under "Tools" then "Rests", pretty straightforward), it was easy to add them. We were kind of in a hurry, so we didn't know where the fermata was, so our piece was fermata-less. Also, when we found out we had too many measures, we had a tough time deleting them and ended printing the extra measures.
But all in all, it's a very good program

As for that $600 price..............my friend's dad will be getting me a copy :). ... Read more
