1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PROGRAM!!!
MUSIC WRITE 2000 STANDARD/PROFESSIONAL VERSION = A WASTE OF MONEY!!!!

IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT COMPOSING/ARRANGING MUSIC - DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH HOW DIFFICULT THIS PROGRAM IS TO USE!

COMPARED TO FINALE NOTEPAD - THE TRIAL VERSION OF FINALE - MUSIC WRITE *CANNOT*:
~TRANSPOSE - YOU HAVE TO TRANSPOSE EVERYTHING! ALL 48 INSTRUMENTS IF YOU CHOOSE TO ENTER THAT MANY!!
~ENTER ACCIDENTALS - WANT AN ACCIDENTAL? HAVE FUN DOUBLE CLICKING EACH NOTE AND TRANSPOSING IT YOURSELF!
~TIE NOTES - WANT A NOTE TO BE TIED? MUSIC WRITE WILL NOT DO IT!

THE LIST GOES ON!! I REPEAT AND REPEAT AGAIN - DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT - DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY - PURCHASE A BETTER PROGRAM! THIS IS A COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY AND I'VE EXPERIENCED *BOTH* PROGRAMS - THE BOXES LIE TO YOU!! DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Difficult
It probably isn't worth buying. There are two many options. The program dosn't let you put an eighth note right after a sixteenth note or a quarter note right after an eighth note and so on. Ties are difficult to put in. It's not so bad but it still isn't worth buying.

1-0 out of 5 stars music write 2000 standard
Very difficult to use. The program trys to do too much and as a result it doesn't do any of its functions well. Very user-unfriendly. Does not allow enough bar-lines per stave (only four). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of cool things it can do for a good price
I originally bought MusEdit to write tab for guitar.
It was easy to enter tab, and then I found this cool
thing where it will automatically make treble
notes appear each time you type a tab note. That works
the other way too, so pretty soon I could put in music
from a library book and the tab would appear. Its
easy to just have treble or tab or chords, and you can put
words anywhere you want.I could play the music back - that
is very nice.I slow it down and then I can learn to play
the piece. There are many samples and some sound really good
with four instruments playing together. It can do drum
rhythms too. There are lots of other things, like a chord
maker where you can just click dots on a grid and design
chord pictures which are saved for later. You
can push a button and the music will turn into
a picture which is easy to e-mail.The printing looks
just like a magazine. Some of the samples look amazing.
There are tons of other things this program can do, so it
is a very good deal for less than [$$$].It's really good
to have a printed manual because of all the stuff it can do. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best - but not so simple...
Finale and I go back a long, long way. How long? Let's just say that after working with several other music sequencing and notation programs I got the opportunity to try it out at a friend's studio. It was the mid-80's, Reagan was President and I think the version was 2.2 or 2.3. Later on it was the 90's and Finale 2.6.3. Now Coda doesn't go by version numbers anymore but by date; apparently its marketing department's objective is to have users pay the upgrade price every year. Sometimes it's not worth it to upgrade; sometimes it is. Depends on how critical your music work is to your livelihood and, more importantly, how well Finale meshes with your MIDI gear, computer setup and operating system.

Doing most music writing in Finale is simple. There's a setup Wizard which asks about the piece's title, composer, lyricist, page layout, instruments/vocals, etc. Once you get to the blank page itself there's several ways to get the notes onto it. There's Simple Entry (click them in with your mouse, or use Finale's keyboard commands). If you have a musical instrument connected to your computer via a MIDI connection you can use Speedy Entry (hit the note, press a number for the rhythm, the note pops up on the screen). The improvisational and the adventurous can try the Transcription tool; although, like most things in Finale, you have to go through a lot of set-up dialogs to get it to work just right. Same for importing a MIDI file.

Needless to say there's a lot to do with the notes once they have been put in. Lyrics, articulations, dynamics, tempo, and other music expressions can also be easily inserted. There's Mass Mover, which is sort of a "page layout" tool for notes and measures. A Resize Tool if you want a reduced score or extra-large music print. And the Staff Tool has a similar function related to, you guessed it, staff spacing and such. And the Page Layout tool (although you had better check your Mac's "Page Setup" before you try to print, just to make sure it matches your piece's page settings in Finale). In fact, Finale has so many tools that sometimes it's hard to keep them all straight. Unlike other notation programs, you can't just grab a note or a page number or a title onscreen and move it. Noooo-- you HAVE to go to a TOOL first! (Sorry to rant, but this is my main disagreement with Finale's user interface.) As a result, a lot of time in this program is spent switching between tools. And compared to other notation software, which have maybe four or five "palettes" with note/rest values, accidentals, word/lyrics input, etc., laid out on the screen, Finale offers a grand total of 30 different tools! There's even a "Special Tools" tool, for custom note tweaking. And there are also Metatools (Finale-speak for keyboard macros) and various Plug-Ins, to add to the complexity.

Don't get me wrong. I love working with Finale. It suits my notational needs about 99% of the time. And the music looks great streaming out of my laser printer. But sometimes it's a love/hate relationship. Let me explain.

Recently I received an email from a conductor. I had notated a vocal/orchestral score for him some years back, and now he wanted a piano reduction for his choirmaster and accompanist. He though he had done one but couldn't find it anywhere. Where was the score? Not on my Mac G3 (my present computer). Nor on the Mac PPC that I used before that. I finally found it, tucked away on my old Mac SE/30. Finale 2002, bless its digital heart, imported that huge Finale 2.6.3 file intact, with only a few very minor glitches.

Now for the piano reduction. "Aha, there's a Piano Reduction plug-in," I thought, gleefully clicking a couple of measures, only to find that doing that mashed notes and rhythms together into an unrecognizable blob. Good thing I didn't try it on the entire score! After some fumbling around I did find the proper tool (Implode Music) and, yes, I did have to go hunt down its Quantization settings, which I think were buried somewhere in the depths of the Transcription Tool. One does this a LOT in Finale: It seems that, while the simplest music tasks are easy, navigating through multiple menus and endless dialog boxes is necessary to get anything important done. It's like going through your crazy old uncle's dusty, disorganized toolshed to find a Phillips screwdriver.

I don't blame Finale for the lousy plug-in. I do fault it for its lack of a decent user interface. Yes, I know it has been getting better in that department; thanks to the efforts of its programmers Finale is a lot more user-friendly than it used to be. And they have added a PDF manual, online and "Quick" help, which is a bit confusing but a definite step up from the famously unhelpful Index to the earlier versions' three-volume hardcopy manual. But at the same time this accumulation of libraries, plug-ins, video help and other "feature creep" has resulted in this fine notation program morphing into a big, bloated memory hog.

Another issue is the lack of support for Mac OS X. According to their tech department, Finale 2003 will run in OS X - but only in "Classic" mode, which is like OS 9. In fact, the tech sheet recommends booting your computer in OS 9 in order to get optimal MIDI performance. That's a big reason I haven't upgraded to Finale 2003 yet.... ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Sibelius's music notation and publishing software relieves headaches commonly associated with its genre--once a scoring decision has been made, getting it onto the virtual page is a matter of dexterity alone.

We tested this workhorse on a networked Windows NT 4.0 machine with above-average muscle. Even though we were at times running four additional RAM-hungry applications, the tenth of a second refresh rate never even shuddered. We'd make a change, and the score would be dynamically re-rendered in nanoseconds.

A Brahms piano Nocturne--Op. 118, No. 6, for those of you keeping score--was our proving ground. It was being made over into a tasty tapas-sized arrangement for chamber orchestra. After about an hour of reading the cheeky manual and head scratching, a feeling of euphoria began to encroach upon the usual swollen-throated despair that accompanies computer-based music notation. Our laziest prayers were answered. Can't remember the exact range of the bassoon? The note head turns red as a reminder. Don't feel like thinking in B-flat? The Transpose button lets you stay in the happy land of C right until it's time for one-click part extraction.

Really, the only task that took some tongue-biting and eyebrow-knitting was an attempt at selecting a group of instrument staves for copying, rather than the usual single staff or entire grand staff. The handy Shift+Alt+key combination proved to do the trick, one of many such fruits of forethought from the designers at Sibelius.

Additional qualities like ease of Web publishing and OCR (optical character recognition) sheet music scanning capabilities sweeten this product. Finally, the software's narrow waistband--a mere 10 MB for full install--leads us to believe that we're talking about a music notation and publishing powerhouse that will make its presence felt for years to come. --Dominic Johnson ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Software
This product is one of the best designed, most powerful and user-friendly software applications I have ever used. Bar none - in any saftware genre. It is a pleasure to use. If you know how to read and write music, you can start using Sibelius because that is how it is designed. There is hardly any learning curve at all. You do not have to translate your musical knowledge or transform your thinking habits to fit into a new way of doing things. Sibelius is to music notation as Word is to writing. You buy it and you use it. I have used Finale and you can do a lot with it. But it will give you headaches. Some of their programming and interface design decisions make no sense. In fact they are counter-intuitive and counter-musical. I would buy Sibelius over Finale for the layout features and part extraction alone. Again- in Finale these are things that you might be able to do after you have used the program everyday for six months. In Sibelius - from day one.

And I must rebut some earlier claims. First of all their tech support is great. Courteous and professional. And it is toll free! Amen. Also the manual. You will love this manual. Some earlier reviewer said "manuals" - plural. Not true. There is one manual and it is exceptionally well written. It is actually fun to read. Yes- I am talking about a software manual. No, I am not insane. Great manual. And they are committed to never ever replacing the manual with electronic help. (they have electronic help if that is what you like)

The fact that it is used by people like Steve Reich, John Adams, Michael Tilson Thomas, Alf Claussen, Ray Charles, etc. doesn't hurt either. And to the previous reviewer - I would hardly call these gentlemen wannabes! Also Boosey and Hawkes uses it, Oxford University Press uses it, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Music Writting Program
Sibelius has been my score writter of choice since I purchased it 18 months ago. As a professional musician, teacher, and copyist, I have found this program invaluable.

It is easy to learn and speed increases with many one key shortcuts that are intuitive. Three methods of input, mouse (slowest), keybord (faster), MIDI keyboard (fastest), are available to the user. The program follows all modern conventions in music notation and allows the user to change these as desired. The newest version (1.4) supports importing scores from Finale, a great help for professional copyists that have scores in that difficult program's format. It can also import MIDI files and transcribe them to a Sibelius score, and save a file in MIDI format.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's sitting somewhere on my shelf
This is the most overrated software I have used. I kept hearing from Sibelius adds about how much easier it was to use than Finale and that it could do the same things that Finale could do. Wrong! First of all, you basically have to have a MIDI keyboard to get any decent input at all. It's not like Finale where you can get around without a keyboard. The output looks like something that came from my old sequencer programs. You also have to make sure that you do everything perfect the first time and don't change your mind because editing parts of the score is probably the most difficult feat to accomplish in Sibelius. They even pop up warnings letting you know that you can't undo some things.

The interface is amateurish and made for kids to use. Every score you make looks the same and it is difficult to add your own personal touches. I much prefer Finale which gives me the power to do anything I could want to do. Finale takes a bit longer to learn because it is more complex and, like anything that is worth learning, it just takes some practice. I would only suggest buying Sibelius if you just write music as a hobby and not as a profession (only if you can't find a copy of Finale).

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You Sibelius!!!!
Musical notation is my JOB, and Sibelius is a dream come true.

It took me a while to decide where to go after being an Encore power user for so many years, but when I saw Sibelius 2 and was able to get my hands on it for just a few minutes, I fell in love with it immediately, ditched Encore, and put Finale (where I thought I might end up) and the others out of my mind entirely.

(I actually have Finale, and I've had to do jobs on it, but it's never given back anything but frustration. Now I stress out at the thought of having to use it, and I rarely accept jobs on it because I'm given plenty of work on Sibelius, and I can get twice as much done.)

Sibelius, the program itself, helped me to make the decision to choose it as my professional choice for musical notation -- copying, transcription, arranging, and composition.

Sibelius is competitively priced and worth every penny. It's created by musicians and composers who understand what music needs to look like on the page. It's extremely intuitive and easy to use and learn. The Sibelius employees are mostly musicians and music educators who understand your concerns and are eager to help and please. The program has an incredibly fast learning curve if you're new to it, it's cross-platformed, and it just keeps getting better.

I'm here, waiting for version 3, and couldn't help but give my opinion about version 2. Buy it! It's unbelieveable~!

5-0 out of 5 stars Career Changing Software
I've been using Sibelius in my professional composing and orchestrating work for almost three years. It has changed my work habits in important ways. What was hard labor, done with a mild sense of drudgery has become fun, interactive work. My creativity has been freed-up and my sense of what I can accomplish in a given time has expanded dramatically. It has also availed me of new relationships based on use of the program which been an important boost in my career. I recommend Sibelius to anyone who is serious about upgrading their professional capabilities. ... Read more

recycle is useful because you can remix any .wav or .aif file you input into your computer. then you can sequence it (that is to say, time it) with other concurrent bits and pieces of sound.

Propellerhead is a musician's group, who are also a team of programmers and have created a series of software which are all intercompatible; including reason, which is another synth and midi module; and rebirth, which i am not familiar with.

recycle is useful because you can remix any .wav or .aif file you input into your computer. then you can sequence it (that is to say, time it) with other concurrent bits and pieces of sound.

it reacts the way an MPC would if the MPC's trim mode was enhanced by an amount only dreamable.

i don't recommend downloading this product for free because the setup file requires a proof-of-purchase cD and the Propellerheads deserve their props. but i could really use that fifty dollar gift certificate. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars WARNING: SPYWARE
"System Requirements: Internet Access" The included software is spyware / 30 day shareware even though you paid for it. Very irritating multi pop-up messages that demand access to the internet. They are time consuming to dismiss.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY IF YOU HAVE WINDOWS XP
This software says it's supports Windows XP but it does not. Voyetra does not have good customer service. This is what Voyetra had to say about this package:

"The USB Music Studio Kit is compatible with Windows XP. The drivers just aren't XP certified, but that doesn't mean they don't work.

They do work of course, otherwise how could we sell it?"

If you are on XP it will give you a warning that it is not XP certified and it may damage your system.

If you have $50 to gamble on this package then go for it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Setup is a challenge, but performance is awesome
I have finally connected my Yamaha PSR-225GM keyboard to my Toshiba XP laptop and now I am recording music directly from the keyboard into MIDI format. The software takes a while to get used to and there are some places where it might have been more user-friendly, but it is powerful and easy to use once you understand it.I like how you can select and move notes, change the length of the notes, change the musical instrument, and print out music. The music recording captured dynamics.

Getting things to work took a lot of time.I spent a few hours and was about to give up.I am still not sure which of the things I tried made the recording to work.I ended up using the Edirol UM-1SX (purchased separately) instead of the USB MIDI cable that came with the studio kit.I configured the keyboard MIDI settings to channel 1 and made sure the MIDI would be sent out.I uninstalled and reinstalled the application. Then tried recording and voila it worked!Used EDIROL as MIDI input and Microsoft MIDI Mapper as MIDI output.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good value! Software registration needs Internet connection
I bought it because I neded USB to MIDI adapter cable to use my older Windows 2000 laptop with my MIDI keyboard. MIDI worked as soon as I installed the software from CD. The only thing I do not like is the registration with included Voyetra Record Producer software, it forces registration throught Internet to be able to use the software or it goes in 30 days demo mode.

1-0 out of 5 stars Didn't work on my Windows XP system
I'd like to be able to say more about this product but I've
been unable to get the included MIDI cable working with my
Toshiba XP system.I've exchanged about 10 emails with their
support person, but so far still no luck.He insists that they
have tested it successfully with other XP installations, but since they can't tell me why it doesn't work with mine, I'd be concerned that it may not work with yours. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Guitar Tracks 2 -> Wav -> MP3
I'd just like to clear up an issue that a couple of people have posted here concerning MP3 limitations with this product. I believe the built in MP3 encoder only has 20 uses before you have to register it. However, you can still output to .wav as many times as you like.

Some people have mentioned that there is encoding in the output .wav file that stops you creating an MP3 file from it using a 3rd party program.

Well, I've just tried creating a .wav in Guitar Tracks 2, creating an MP3 from it in cdex (freeware), then playing it in winamp (freeware also). I had no problems at all.

My point is this - there is no MP3 limitiation with this product so don't let it put you off buying it because is it's fantastic!!...

5-0 out of 5 stars 98% happy with this product
This program is easy to use and has a great interface, two key points. You can plug your guitar right into your line in slot (foregoing any effects though). This is a great program for anyone who has musical ideas to convey, but has lacked a reasonably priced method of recording them. You get 8 seperate tracks to fiddle with, which proves sufficient in most cases. It comes with the drag and drop drummer lite edition, which is cool at first, but it seems like it is just a ploy to get the user to buy the real edition with an more adequate number of fills and beats. It is time consuming to create each track, but proves worth it in the end. The files can easily be saved as .wavs and burnt to CD. The mp3 encoder is a trial only with 20 uses. This is important because even if you save your files to .wavs, they have security features that prevent them from being encoded into mp3s (even by other programs). One more problem is that you can only begin recording at the beginning of a measure, which can be irritating. Overall though, this product has proved hours (and hours) of fun! Anyone feel free to e-mail me with other questions- jwax@tulane.edu

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Way to start recording fast!
This was the way I learned about recording, and I still use it to this day with my home recording (along with several other programs), It has great tools, and is very easy to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars It DOES support XP, Great product for the money
I love this product. Really good economical pc based recorded.

If you're going to make the investment the only thing I recommend is that you have a high end sound card.

Oh yeah, It DOES support Windows XP. One other reviewer claimed it did not. I run Windows XP Pro without a glitch.

2-0 out of 5 stars No XP support....
Purchased this about a year and a half ago...just got a new computer running XP...this is not compatible. No updates available from Cakewalk but they did suggest I purchase one of their NEWER products that is XP compatible. ... Read more
