Amazon.com Review

Music Creator 2003 may be one of the most impressive midrange digital audio solutions currently available. Published by respected music software publisher Cakewalk, Music Creator is a powerful and affordable application that comes packed with a surprising number of high-end amenities.

Indeed, Music Creator is essentially a less capable adaptation of Cakewalk's celebrated professional-level music system, the considerably more pricey Sonar. Certainly anyone familiar with Sonar will instantly recognize the program's presentation. Even those who don't will have little trouble becoming acclimatized, as Cakewalk has furnished a large and detailed set of tutorials designed to guide newcomers through the procedures and pitfalls of PC music making.

Supporting traditional instruments such as guitars and drum kits, and MIDI-based devices such as computerized keyboards, Music Creator is extremely versatile. You'll need to supply the equipment to transfer your sounds into the computer at first, but the program is ready to handle everything thereafter.

Through its graphic waveform-based interface, Music Creator allows you to fine-tune and reposition your audio and MIDI files, apply multiple effects to both single and multiple tracks, and take advantage of an expansive range of synthesized virtual instrument sounds. With a little practice, you can add fades and crossfades, rip samples from your favorite CDs, and concoct any number of ACID-type loops. Of course, one of the great advantages of digital recording is the ease with which you can remove unwanted background noises and wayward notes, and the program allows you to do just that with just a few mouse clicks.

The package also features a stripped down version of Cakewalk's reasonably respected CD burning utility Pyro, and an extremely valuable search tool that automatically checks your drive(s) for those easily misplaced bits and bytes of seemingly lost tracks.

Despite its relatively friendly nature, Music Creator sports a wealth of rather complex concepts, and thus shouldn't be taken lightly. PC music rookies and hobbyists may well find that Music Creator 2003 is the only application they'll ever need. --Gordon Goble ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was hoping for at all...
I just wanted something I could write music with.I can't read music but I can lay down tracks with a computer that sound almost as good as anything commercially available. The interface on this is not intuitive, it's not easy to use, and I'm sorry I got it.

2-0 out of 5 stars If you run XP, stay away...
There seems to be a serious problem with the installation procedure for Music Creator 2003 under Windows XP/Home Edition. As always with XP, it's necessary to be an Administrator in order to install the software, and the program works just fine when you start it from an Admin account. No surprizes there.

HOWEVER, if you log in under a non-privileged account, Music Creator dies with a message about "unable to create Staff view music font." Then, rather than exiting, the program hangs with its initial splash screen displayed. It just sits there, frozen, until you kill it with the Task Manager. (Very lame...)

From this behavior, I have to assume that no one at Cake Walk ever tested this software under a non-privileged account. (I probably shouldn't be surprized by this, given that no one ever tested it with DirectX 9.0 either...)

Of course, one workaround is simply to run the program from Admin all the time, but this is a TERRIBLE security risk. Admin-enabled accounts should be used ONLY for system maintenance -- NEVER for day-to-day work. (Unless of course, you really like giving viruses the run of your machine.)

In my case, I think the correct workaround for this problem is to return the software and get a refund...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value
I was planning on using Christmas money to buy one of much more expensive Sonar programs but my brother bought me this because he knew I wanted to set up a home studio. I've really enjoyed this program so far. If you are a beginner to computer recording you might want to consider Music Creator 2003. I used the extra money I was planning to spend the Cakewalk Sonar software to get a quality soundcard(M-Audio Delta 44), condenser microphone(AT3035), and preamp. The results have been great so far. I use a Dell computer with Windows 2000XP and haven't had any of the problems others user claim to have had. I just downloaded DirectX version 8.1 from Cakewalk's website and downloaded the updated drivers for my Delta soundcard from M-audio's website. Everything has worked like a charm. Soundwise, the results have been very impressive. I've spent lots of money to record in studio's and the results have not come out nearly as good as the results I'm getting on my computer right now. I put $40.00 aside in order to get the 'Music Creator 2003 Pro' upgrade from Cakewalk's website. I've been so pleased with this program I decided to forget the upgrade and put the forty bucks toward getting an extra microphone. So if you want to get started recording music on your computer and are on a budget I suggest getting this program and using the money you will save to buy other recording equipment. This will keep you plenty busy for a while.
Just to note: I don't use, or plan on using, the sheet music maker included in this program so I have no idea how good that part of it is. I just use it to record vocals and guitar.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
This is the best program I have ever seen for music. Not only can I create sheet music of songs I have written I can also create accompanyment CDs for any song I have sheet music for.It is well worth the cost of it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was told it would be
I had asked the salesman at the Best Buys what software would let me record LP's and cassette tapes into my computer for playback and burning to CD's. He sold me this Music Creator 2003 and when I tried to use it it turned out to be a complete waste of my thirty bucks! I kept getting asked to specify a MIDI output and found out it wouldnt accept the one on my VAIO with XP. I was also rudely informed I would have to buy yet another software from 12Tones to get closer to my purpose of buying this in the first place.
I am forced to rate it as one star when it actualy earns a minus one.
If you want to record your LP's and cassettes into your computer and play them on it or put them on a CD, FORGET this "stuff"!
Buy a stand-alone CD recorder! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For what it is...OUTSTANDING
I have used Magix Samplitude in a professional studio setting, editing radio commercials and doing audio for video work. This product is about three features short of the $1,700 (approx.) version of their pro audio program, Samplitude. It's incredible. When I first saw it, I thought, "They must have stripped the program bare, but at least it has the interface". Upon receiving this product, I was shocked, it's essentially Samplitude Studio, and it has a full MIDI sequencer to boot, with some of the most realistic instrumentation I've ever heard.

It doesn't record 96K audio (only up to 48K - perfectly suited for pro work), can't burn CD's directly from the timeline (who doesn't have alternate CD burning software these days? - it's built into WinXP and others), and doesn't have a built in de-esser (which you can emulate with it's extensive EQ settings).

All in all, this is an incredible program that is mature, stable and has most if not all of the features of it's big brother Samplitude, which has become a staple in studio settings.

I'm buying two more for my business!

4-0 out of 5 stars If you have a sound blaster card chances are your. ...
asio drivers will be very poor and your computer will overstack its buffers. This will cause crashing, dropouts, and other bad assortments. Before buying audio software make sure your drivers are updated and well written specifically for the card. Otherwise you will probably have problems like most of the other users writing reviews. By the wayside... This program is an older version of logic with cut-down logic-type vsti support. Definitely worth it's price not to mention the sample cd's.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works great!
Works great! Very fast on my 2.4GHz machine. I had absolutely no problems using my Audigy drivers under DX8. If you have any doubts, download the demo from Magix and try it before you buy it (duh!).

1-0 out of 5 stars YIKES....I ONLY HAVE TWO WORDS....
DON'T BUY. O.k. I have a few more...this thing crashed more than a drunk pilot. It lagged and locked up on me so many times i'm going cross-eyed. I liked version 5 deluxe a heckuvalot better than this. I was warned about 6 so i stayed away. I wish i were warned about this one. Give this vampire the old wooden stake! DEFINITELY buy 5 over 6 or 7. Or just stay away and find a nice sonic foundry program. They cost a whole lot more...but if you can afford it...get it.If not, look around for magix music studio 5 deluxe. You won't be sorry.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's best feature is un-install!
I never could get this product to work with the audio drivers in my Audigy sound card so I bought Cakewalk Music Creator 2003 instead. Am I glad I did. Cakewalk is 100 time better. Magix has a very poor user interface. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

While there are plenty of at-home music-making programs to choose from these days, Magix Techno Music Maker has all the features and functions necessary for making your own videos to accompany your music.

The package is broadly aimed at beginners and experts alike. For those who are novices at digital home recording, the integral Song Wizard is constantly on hand to help you through the process. With a little nudge, the Song Wizard will show you how to use your mouse to select your musical instruments, to decide the length of a song, and to create and modify sounds and samples that will eventually go in the mix. Echo, reverb, timestretch, and pitchshift features are also available at the touch of a finger. The truly clever part comes when you press the Video button: a number of modules will appear, with small preview thumbnails to show what you're getting. Choose one of these and figures dance, screens go wild, and landscapes and cartoon characters do your most whimsical bidding. It's kind of like being Steven Spielberg without all the effort. Or money.

Extras include a rather splendid retro-style techno synthesizer, a similarly sassy hip-hop synth, a mixer, a copy function, and a kaleidoscope. And, when you're finally done with your Quincy Jones impression you can send your proud production to a friend via e-mail, or, remarkably, post it on the Magix Web site. --Sean Thomas ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars They must know something
Look... If you need software to CREATE music but have no skills with music production, instruments or stuff then this is your tool. It's easy, it's fun and it's cheap, I'm 16 and on a parental buget so cheap is good. Loop based music arrangements like that old Sonic Foundry Acid program but cheaper and easier. I can use mp3 files, CD files, MIDI files and even video. I can even create a website with the software. Created a song in under 5 minutes, I added video later and I can't say enough about it.

I am hooked... this almost makes it to easy.

The only thing that is lame is that the mp3 encoder is extra. no biggie. I say if your into music you need this program.

3-0 out of 5 stars read the insructions and clear your memory ...!!!!!!
If you are crashing....Music Maker Deluxe is my secret weapon, Music Maker Deluxe 2004 (MMD 2004) coupled with 2 other programs I currently use, are proving to be a winning combination for me. Those who have listened to the beats I am pounding out using MMD 2004 are astonished by the layered arrangements and effects this program gave me. Anyone out there who builds beats from scratch and limits their sampling would be impressed with this application. The virtual instruments are cool......bottom line!!!! Even the sampling savy "beat pirates" out there would enjoy this program. It works on my vaio buddy.....LOL The people that will have problems with this program don't read instructions and have too much porn saved to their hard-drive!!!!!!! I'm out

1-0 out of 5 stars This was a huge no no
This is not only (much like music maker generation 7) highly unstable but pretty useless on both my of my Sony Vaios (Computer Brand). Do not waste your money on this program it was a great disapointment because the crash ratio was higher them the running time.Even after cleaning my memory (as stated in the instructions)it crashed just as bad on both my Pentium 4 and my Athlon. Not only did it crash alot but the program effects broads, such as the guitar effects, need to be updated or done away with. They constintly errored out and most effects that was advertised on the box just plain out did not work. Stick with Sonic Foundry or final cut 4 both are alot better programs to work with.

1-0 out of 5 stars I do better using built-in Win apps and CD Burn software
I do better using the built-in Windows multimedia applications and the 'Nero' burner and wave editing software that was bundled with my CD burner. This was the MOST disappointing purchase I have ever made in my life. Nothing on the box even HINTS at the license agreement restrictions, which requires you to upgrade to a 'pro' (or 'royalty free') product if you don't want to include something similar to 'Created via MAGIX' in anything you publish, even the FREE stuff (either that or violate the license agreement), regardless of whether or not you use any of the samples. Further, I couldn't even load a simple MIDI file without the application CHANGING THE TEMPO and as well as all of the patch information in the process. So after converting the MIDI file to '.wav' format (using the windows application 'sndrec32' and the media player, like I usually do) I then added this track as #1, and started trying to add extra tracks, only to find out that the ONE feature that would have made this valuable was missing: NO 'per channel' graphic equalizers! And the "tone control" (not even a graphic EQ) had only 3 levels for bass, mid and treble! Even the free software that came with my CD Burner (namely, Nero Wave Editor) has a multi-band graphic EQ in it (and you can even change the frequencies for each band). So much for "effects". I was completely dissatisfied. I immediately uninstalled it and looked on the box for "money back guarantee" so I could return it. And you know what? There's no money back guarantee. (...).

1-0 out of 5 stars If you already have version 7, DON'T GET THIS
I am a frequent user of Music Maker 7 Deluxe, and it is better on so many levels than this its insane. I was very stoked to buy this product when I heard it had guitar modelling and all the great features in 7 enhanced. BUT, I bought it and realized they took out some of my favorite drum sounds, which worked the best for rock (I am a drummer who likes to make rock music in MM). In addition, there are tons of bugs, crashes, and other annoyances to worry about. The guitar modelling is difficult to use and doesn't really sound like guitar (although its better than what you had before.) The interface is also worse than before. I am very disappointed and pray to god that a patch comes out so my 60 bucks isn't wasted. I will do all my music making in version 7, and maybe use 2004 dlux as a 60-dollar compressor. I'm very ticked right now. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars kash money
when i bought this (march 2003) it was $20, but now it's only $10. i thought it was good for the price when it was $20. so it's a REALLY good deal right now. it is an excellent software with plenty of useful features, and for this price, the best in the league. very easy to use; all you need is a mic and your set to go. this is really good for a beginner to just get into making songs. for $10, this is a MUST. great program, and works fine without clogging up the computer. obviously this isn't as good as a professional program like ACID PRO 4.0, but it's almost ridiculously how little difference there is for amateurs. all in all, great software, and i recommend it for everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Use, SW that actually _exceeds_ its ad copy!
I purchased this SW after trying the demo of Magix's UK Dance Edition SW. MusicMaker 7 is very easy to use, the menu items in the program are arranged in a very logical, yet intuitive fashion.

Help files included with the program are very well written and, unlike all too many programs today, actually answer real, practical questions that arise when one is learning to use the SW.

This program is packed with functionality,an easy to use interface and makes the creative process the focus rather than having to struggle with arcane command/menu sets.

The included video and audio samples are of very good quality; if one is a beginner, like me, you can wax creative for some time to come without having to buy any more samples CDs.

Try it, you will like it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy and sounds GREAT!
I just got this yesterday and only ran the tutorial. I haven't even read the manual completely, but decided to give it a shot. It's SO EASY to drop in bass lines, drums, guitars, sound FX, song bytes, etc. and my first attempt at a song sounded GREAT! My kids said it sounded like something that could very easily be playing on the radio right now! I can't wait to learn more about this program to fine tune our songs even more. It's fantastic, simple to use, and allows you to create terrific sounding music just by dragging and dropping. EXCELLENT PRODUCT!

5-0 out of 5 stars good starter program!
great samples are included with this program, they don't sound cheesy, and every sound can be modified with various effects. it's a little confusing to use at first but comes with a little video you can watch on yr computer that explains everything and a booklet, as well. Plus, what is really cool, it lets you type what you want the COMPUTER to say in your songs and the tones are adjustable, so you can make it sound like a man or woman voice speaking. you can import files and record yr own to import as well. AND not only does it help you to make music, but you can also make videos and websites. the music section, however, is the best, in my opinion. buy it and have fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!!
I just love this program. You can create great Music in a number of different styles: Rock/Pop, Hip Hop, Techno etc. You can make great songs and music in only a few clicks, and additionally add in all kinds of effects, 3D audio, Echo etc. I really enjoy using this. It's easy and the music sounds good too! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Voyetra's Teach Me Piano is an excellent choice for the beginning or intermediate piano student. With a slick, intuitive, and highly graphical interface and several dozen musically intelligent piano lessons, this CD-ROM makes it fun and easy to learn music with any MIDI-compatible keyboard or piano. A standout feature here is the highly effective interface, which sports a visual music room with the piano--and uses piano keys themselves to reach major program features. (Younger users should be able to learn to click on the right objects to get going.)The heart of this title features over 60 lessons, including the fundamentals of reading music and solid, beginning piano technique. You'll learn basic fingerings, scales, intervals, and the essentials of music notation. A library of some 75 songs--including traditional and folk tunes, with plenty of short classical pieces in a good range of difficulty--gives you something to practice. The best thing about the instruction has to be the videos that illustrate proper pianistic technique. A piano expert shows you all the correct positions and fingerings in real-time and full-motion video with sound. It's just the sort of thing that can lead to good habits for new players. As you go forward in the lessons here, you'll master playing in musical keys with up to three sharps or flats. The songbook feature breaks out your library of tunes, which you can work on separately outside of the lesson format. You can search for pieces by genre, composer, and level of difficulty.

With its focus on teaching piano from the ground up along with "real" music notation, this CD-ROM title will be a winner with any aspiring music student who's serious about learning the piano. Teach Me Piano has visual polish and plenty of musical expertise to offer anyone, whatever your age. --Rich Dragan ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Teach Me Piano
Having just purchased a used piano for my daughter, I decided to attempt to learn it also. At the age of 35, I didn't want to take beginning piano lessons so I purchased the above software, Teach Me Piano. When you consider the average cost of weekly piano lessons, this software really does pay for itself after a few lessons. I found it easy to use, however I would strongly recommend you only buy it if you have your computer relatively close to the piano in question. Laptop which you could sit on the piano would be preferable. The interactive portion of the lesson really requires a good quality microphone. You must be self-motivated to get anything out of this.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just started using it
Obviously, installation woes. I expect it to be very buggy, it looks like it's made with some kind of demo-making SW rather than coded from scratch. Could not get it to work under Windows XP on an AMD setup (Athlon XP/Asus MB/Audigy), works fine so far under Windows XP on a P4 setup (Dell 8300 w/SB5.1). Looks like, as of 2004, most of the Piano Teaching SW programs out there that use a MIDI KB are obsolete, there's this one, Piano Suite, and eMedia Piano & Keyboard left? Those are both twice as expensive. Can somebody compare them? I see that the Piano Suite people are suppressing some bad reviews with their lawyers and it might be as old as this one (XP isn't mentioned in the OS list), and I see that the emedia one is the same company as a very well reviewed guitar program and is brand spanking new and modern (mentions OSX 10.2 in the mac version and XP for PC), but I haven't seen many reviews.
The consensus so far is, it works best on older OSs (98se ets.) might not work at all under XP or 2000 depending on your setup, and when it works, is pretty good. You know what? I'm gonna get the emedia one too and compare sometime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory piano lessons
I am in my mid thirties and I had never played a musical instrument in my entire life. Two weeks after installing the software I am well on my way to playing my first complete song by devoting about 45 minutes every day to the lessons. Great software, and it does work fine on Windows XP and the MIDI interface of a Sound Blaster card.

4-0 out of 5 stars Learning all over again
My husband took piano lessons when he was a kid - his mother made him. Sound familiar? Out of nowhere he starts talking about learning again so he purchases these cd's. He's really excited and is literally on the computer every night listening to the cd's and playing his portable piano. Okay, so how many times do I have to listen to 'The Entertainer' ring through the house (sigh)??? Well, he's actually gotten very good at playing, and he's moved on to some other songs (thank goodness!). My husband is not one who reads a lot so the cd's really are great. I would recommend this to anyone who would like to learn the piano all over again!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not compatible with Windows XP
Beware!! You cant use this program if you have or upgrade to Windows XP! Voyettra website states that ther is no patch or download available. But, they do recommend spending the extra 29.00 to upgrade to the "Deluxe" version so that you can use it in XP. This is from their website... "If you're using Windows XP we would recommend upgrading to "Teach Me Piano Deluxe" on our website:" Very poor customer support. I guess Ill be buying software from another company from now on. ...
