4-0 out of 5 stars Good except for one obnoxious thing...
I bought this from EBay in January 2004, and from what I see today Amazon is offering an excellent price.

On first appearance, this software looks to be complciated to learn. The thing is, they packed it with more features than I personally would ever need. If you have the patience, you can really get some neat things out of the software. I played around with it, but eventually discarded the manual and started using it just like my old tape-drive 4-track recorder. Build-in metronome? Cool. Don't need it. Built-in effects? Might use it someday. Not today. So - you can get off the ground with the basic pretty quickly. One really neat thing is graphicly selecting regions that you want to punch in before hitting record. All in all, really good.

There are a couple of clunky thing about it that you can work around easily - if you try to record a track before selecting an input device, for example, that track isn't going to work again (so just deleted it and make a new one). Double-clicking a Cakewalk file from file explorer results in an error, so bring up the application first, then load the file. I haven't run into any really drastic bugs, but makes me wonder when I will.

Okay - my big beef - you have to pay extra to enable mixing down to MP3. I personally find it very obnoxious to buy a fully-featured, production piece of software - and then they want MORE MONEY - $30 - to enable what should be a standard feature. You can mix down to plenty of formats, sure, but let's face it, you'd expect MP3 to be a pretty standard format to use. I feel cheated and not respected as a customer of the product when the developers resort to this kind of money-grubbing.

Well, I was going to give 2 starts because of the MP3 thing, but to be fair, overall this is a really nice piece of software, so it deserves a balanced review. Happy recording!

2-0 out of 5 stars Powerful but hard
I bought the program, so that I could be able to record MIDI. I have an Casio WK-1800 keyboard, which I thought to connect to my computer. I connected the keyboard with a Yamaha UX-16 Midi in/Midi out to USB connector. I have gone through zillions of e-mails with support, and they don't seem to be able to make it work.

Otherwise, the program is a powerful workhorse, only if you spend hours and hours of figuring everything out. As an first-timer, I don't recommend this product. But as an professional, go for it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good value - if you have the patience
I bought this as a home recording novice. Whereas my prior home recording experience was limited to a microphone and an office tape recorder, my knowledge of desktop computers and how they operate is extensive. Novices be aware that Cakewalk has a steep learning curve with regard to troubleshooting. Don't expect to install and be recording right away. This is a very complex program and it seems the possibilities for conflicts with other software on the computer is endless. I can't imagine having to wrestle with this beast not having the computer knowledge that I have. For example, to avoid dropouts I have to set my soundcard and Cakewalk audio mode to ASIO. It will not record in the standard MME mode and to this day I have no idea why and have explored every possible soundcard conflict to no avail.

That being said - if you are up to a couple weeks of trying to defeat the beast, Cakewalk does provide a tool for you to make pro-quality digital recordings at a bargain price. You have unlimited tracks for audio and MIDI instruments. I only use the audio tracks to record guitar and bass compositions. The drum machine included in the software is kind of weak so I recommend getting a CD of professional drum loops. With a good drum loop I can record a bass line, rythm guitar track, and lead guitar track with sound quality that match any store-bought CD I own.

The options to tweak your sound are practically infinite. So you are limited only by time and your imagination.

If you think it will be too much of a hassle, I understand. Otherwise, if you have the courage and determination, you will eventually reap the rewards.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Jury is Still Out
After an apparently successful installation, the "Wave Profiler," module repeatedly crashed my machine. Installation of the patch offered by Cakewalk did not seem to be of any help.

At present, I am able to record MIDI. Due to the aforementioned problem with wave profiler, however, I am unable to record instruments through mic/line input.

I believe this software does have potential. Hopefully I will be able to realize it in the near future. This reveiew will be updated accordingly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cakewalk Home Studio just keep getting better and better!
Cakewalk products just keep getting better and better. Possibly the best all-around home studio recording software packages in it's (low!) price range. Cakewalk Home Studio 2004 includes a whole whack of goodies, including some very serious new tools for musicians. The best part is that Home Studio is nice and easy to use.

If you're a musician stepping into the world of digital recording, Cakewalk Home Studio gently eases you into a creative recording environment, providing you with everything you need to turn your computer into a powerful multitrack recording studio.

With lots of pro level features not found in most other recording software packages, Home Studio 2004 records up to 24-bit / 96 kHz audio and is designed to let you focus on the creative process of making music.

Home Studio also includes the great sounding EDIROL Virtual Sound Canvas DXi. With over 990 sounds and drum sets, this little 'extra' is actually a HUGE bonus with the software.

One of Home Studio's many pro-level features is support for multi-channel audio cards. This is great if you want to record more than one instrument or audio track at once - perfect for recording live bands with each musician recorded to a separate track.

Want to create some killer drum tracks? It's easy to 'paint' drum tracks with the simple 'click and drag' feature. You can record unlimited audio and MIDI tracks, mix with real-time audio and MIDI effects, and then burn your masterpiece to CD with Pyro Express CD maker and WAV ripper. Home Studio 2004 supports ACID-format, MP3, WAV, WMA and MIDI files.

For anyone wanting to enter the magical world of digital recording, this product is truly an excellent choice... ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great features, but partially unusable, with terrible suppor
I bought Music Creator Pro to create sound tracks for the video projects I've been putting together, and it's a very capable set of tools. The MIDI and recorded sound mixing, effects, and automation would be perfect for my application - if they worked. The description of the product on Cakewalk's web site is accurate, and the user interface is not very difficult to understand.

I installed the software on a fast Windows XP machine, and soon discovered that it would crash when the drum pattern paint tool was used. Cakewalk's tech support has been very slow in their responses, taking at least one day and sometimes more than four to respond. I still haven't received any help other than advice to reinstall the product (I did), make sure I have the latest drivers (I do), and delete a couple of configuration files (I did). The drum pattern tool still crashes the application, and in the course of working through the tutorials (the ones I can use) I have also discovered some features that appear to be globally disabled.

Two weeks after installing the product, I'm simultaneously very impressed with the features and capabilities, and very disappointed with the responsiveness of Cakewalk's tech support. If everything worked the way it was supposed to, I would probably rate Music Creator Pro with five stars.

[update]
It's now a month since purchase, and the software still does not work correctly. Cakewalk will not support this product by telephone. If you call their (non-toll-free) support number, you are told that they only support Music Creator Pro by email. They have failed to respond to either of my last two email messages, the first of which was sent two weeks ago. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Voyetra has created a winner with Teach Me Piano Deluxe. This comprehensive set includes lessons, music reference, music-related games, and even a simple recording console. It should appeal to both beginning and intermediate players.

Installation was fast and trouble-free. The application's interface is well-designed and navigation through the program is self-explanatory. From the main menu you can select Piano Lessons, Recording Station/Jammin' Keys, Music Games, Music Reference, and SoundCheck. We moved right into the piano lessons, which cover getting started, right-hand training, rhythm training, and more. You can also zoom in on individual chapters, and select solo exercises from a drop-down list.

After choosing right-hand stretches, a video window popped up with our friendly instructor, Hugh Berberich. The camera view is over-the-shoulder, top-down on his hand as he slowly plays a scale up one octave. The video window allows one to pause or repeat the lesson, and move to the next lesson when ready. Throughout this and other lessons, Hugh explains concepts such as intervals, bars, and sharps and flats in a clear and concise manner.

Having made it through a lesson with Hugh, we then checked out the recording capabilities of Teach Me Piano. The recording station looks like a simple mixing board, with 12 sliders; Record, Mute, and Solo buttons; LED level meters; and transport functions. The recording station is quite simple and effective for multitracking keyboard parts, transposing MIDI data to different keys, and assigning the recorded MIDI data to the 128 General MIDI-compatible instruments. Although there are no features like editing or effects, it works well for the purposes of simple recording.

Additional features like music games and the Jammin' Keys section provide a respite from the lessons. Overall, Teach Me Piano offers a lot for the beginning or intermediate piano student, and would probably appeal to those simply interested in the piano's role in modern music. --John Bosch ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I have looked at others but this is simply the best...
What they don't tell you is that, you can add midi songs from the internet to the trainer, so that you can learn thousands of songs.
In the lessons, you can change the tempo, if it goes to fast. You can ask it to label the notes with the corresponding letters, as well as, the fingers to use. You can pick a range of measures to go over, instead of the entire song. The most important part of learning music is the timing and this program teaches it from the beginning.
The sequence that the material is presented and studied is thoroughly professional and challenges you every step of the way. This program with a midi keyboard connected to a computer is an ... alternative to traditional music lessons for children and adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product !!
I'm 52 years old and learning to play the piano for the first time. I'm using Teach Me Piano Deluxe in combination with my computer (running win xp) and a midi keyboard. I've been at it now for 5 months (practicing about an hour each day). When I started I knew nothing and now I'm playing simple songs. Short of having a teacher sitting beside you, I think this software is the next best thing. If you're willing to make the investment in time, Teach Me Piano will take you a long way toward learning the piano.

2-0 out of 5 stars Non-Turtle Beach Sound Card Owners beware
AFTER READING THIS REVIEW, PLEASE READ THE UPDATE LOCATED TOWARDS THE BOTTOM.

After reading the reviews of Teach Me Piano Deluxe elsewhere, I must admit that I was geeked.

However, after reading the reviews of the same software here at Amazon.com, I was somewhat apprehensive due to the bad reviews it received, especially for Windows 2000 users and especially the boxed retail version sold in stores.

Therefore, I called Voyetra customer support, told them that I was running Win 2K and there were bad reports on the boxed software and Win 2k. He assured me that there was no difference between the download version and the retail version.

I took him at his work and purchased the retail version. WRONG MOVE! It would really be a nice package IF IT WORKED! As another reviewer stated, the sound is terrible. The MIDI settings keep changing. Sound is intermittent and may leave you at any time.

Using the headphones with this software is a nightmare. Sometimes the sound comes out through the speakers when it should come out through the headphones. Then it might come to its senses and do the right thing.

This software is also a CPU hog. Most of the time, CPU usage is 100%. It hangs constantly, especially during the video episodes and during the verbal instructions. Not only will this software not work properly, but after I kill it in Task Manager, it has the nerve to foul up any other apps that I may want run, even Internet Explorer!

I have rebooted my system tonight 8 times in the course of 1.5 hours. This is totally unacceptable. I will be calling Voyetra on Monday for an upgrade or a refund.

I write software for a living and I am extremely familiar with how to install and use vast numbers of software packages.

However setting up and using software should be a no brainer for even the most novice of users. I feel sorry for a novice trying to wrestle control of their computer back from this software.

UPDATE:

I was FINALLY able to get this program to behave. I was able to, by hunting and pecking, to figure out that for my Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum sound card that I had to set specific MIDI Synth before the MIDI Input would work and I had to do it in a specific order. It seems that Voyetra not only wants to sell you their software, but they only support the Turtle Beach sound card which they also want to sell you. With Sound Blaster soundcards being the most popular sound cards, not to mention the fact that many PCs motherboards now come with integrated sound cards, this is unrealistic. I know that every sound card may not be tested, but at least the most popular ones should and there should be a non-Turtle Beach compatibility list on their website. At the very least, the software should warn the consumer that they purchase this software at their own risk if they have a non-Turtle Beach sound card because Voyetra will not provide technical support BEFORE THEY PURCHASE THE SOFTWARE.

Since I eventually got it to work after much PAIN, I upgraded my rating to 2 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not too bad...
Worked out a lot better than expected. Requires a lot of perseverance and self-determination, but the program itself is very intuitive and easy to use. Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Try this one...
With all these bad reviews, I'd like to make a suggestion...Adventus Piano Suite Premier...Lots of songs, rock solid stability (run the patch from the website if you have any problems) and easy transition from one lesson to the next... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantanstic Program!- And Inexpensive Too!
I am new to using my home PC to make digital recordings. Cakewalk Home Studio 2002 is the only recording software I have and it works great! I have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer and am running Windows XP. I agree with other reviews of this product that once you go through the provided tutorials, it's a cinch. Plus, the controls and toolbars of Home Studio make sense and are quite intuitive. The contextual help and help references are quite good.

I am using an M-Audio Omni Studio with a M-Audio Delta 66 sound card and everything works great! I was pleased when the software recognized the sound card immediately after installation. I think my learning curve on Cakewalk Home Studio 2002 may have been positively influenced by my previous experience with using a 4-track, tape-based unit (Tascam Portastudio 414). Plus the toolbars remind me of the ones in AutoCAD 2000. Because the icons make sense (e.g., two small metronome buttons- one with a red square that sounds during recording and one with a black triangle that sounds during playback), the software is easier to learn.

For the money, I don't think you can beat this package. I am a guitarist (classical, jazz, folk), so it may be a while before I get around to exploring all of the MIDI-type features. I think the track view is great for recording and the console view is great for mixing- very straightforward and convenient. I love that I can make MP3 files and send them as email attachments to my music loving friends. The only bummer I've encountered so far is that the MP3 encoder is only a trial one and if you want to keep it, you have to spend an additional $29.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good software
I have a full review below. Just wanted to add something else.

Home Studio XL in Windows 2000 gives annoying little problems that force you to stop your flow (in some cases for as long as 5 minutes when it crashes and you let windows 2000 sort everything out on its own). Every problem in the full review pertains to working in windows 2000.

However, on windows 98, its smooth sailing. I never had a problem with it while working in Windows 98.

5-0 out of 5 stars difficult but outstanding
I purchased this item in spite of the warnings about how difficult it was to learn. It is indeed difficult. The tutorials are detailed, but regretfully silent on some key issues. I had to search the web for solutions to some problems I had in getting it to run on my laptop computer. The solutions simply involved toggling some options in the pull down menus, but I'd never been able to stumble onto the fixes without investing a few hours in searching the web for advice. I still can't get the chorus and reverb options to work on the mixing board. Oh well. Nevertheless, there really isn't anything else like this product -- especially for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful tool, on a budget!
I have read the review above from the guy who says that Cakewalk Home Studio stinks, and cannot disagree more. True, you do have to learn how to master the tool before it will perform optimally, but what's the alternative? You either learn how to do it, or pay someone to do it for you.
As a musical nerd/geek, I use Home Studio a LOT. I have produced my own music as well as that of others, and for the price you simply cannot beat it.
Unless you are a complete weiner, you should be able to figure out how to use the software. Go on, by the software and start recording...You know you want to!

4-0 out of 5 stars For it's price it is a good value
Software sequencing is not as easy as some might think. It takes a bit of getting used to and reading up on midi, recording audio and mixing. All of this is available on the interent for free and for a person new to home studios it is an excellent supplement for ANY sequencing software.

One area where Cakewalk and other "linear" sequencers create difficulty is when comparing to audio based programs like Acid. It doesn't get much easier than Acid....until you want control that enables you to add your own sounds while playing in which case you'll need the Pro version which while more capable is still not meant for using with midi in any significant way.

Home Studio 2002 is an outstanding bargain. You get a couple of direct x synthesizers aka DXi. They are simple but effective enough to get the user started in software synthesis. Partiuclarly Dreamstation is useful for analog style timbres and the Virtual Sound Canvas is acceptable for traditonal sounds that will play standard midi files.

The audio system is dead simple and requires about an hour to get help through the Cakewalk bulletin board or several other music related sites. Cakewalk's manuals are drab but have the information necessary to get you started. Third party books are common for software. They cut to the chase and do not have to spend the laborious time explaining the entire program. They get you going and then you continue learning with a decent knowledge of the application you are using.

Feature wise you get 80% of the much more expensive Sonar program which adds a beat slicing and sequencing DXi, Rewire capability (for programs that can be synchronized in sample perfect time, some include Reason, ReBirth and Abelton LIVE) and several direct x effects. It's ability to use Acid loops and to save loops to the format makes it especially good for remixers and for those projects that needed a bit more instrumentation but survive as audio tracks. In terms of value for money this is an incredible deal.

There are a couple of contenders but they are nowhere near the capability of Cakewalk Home Studio 2002 which is good enough to create professional tracks.

Considering the professional quality plugins available for instruments and sound/effects processing nothing at this price point is close. Maybe the price of so much flexibility is a little extra work but that becomes a question of whether you need to work immediately or can take a day or two to master the most important aspects of the program so you can lay down tracks and midi takes.

Pass on Cakewalk Home Studio if you are looking for instant gratification. Buy it if you want a taste of the pro-studio at a fraction of the cost. ... Read more

The arguable king of CD burning is back, and it's got a bag of new tricks. Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 Platinum Edition takes you by the hand and leads you through all kinds of CD and DVD creation, from data backups and music compilations to photo slide shows and feature films. User friendly to the last, it comes with a massive manual weighing in at almost 400 pages. Unfortunately, however, beneath the shiny surface of this program hide a few snags.

Burning data and music compilation CDs is simple enough with a "drag to CD" function--you can literally drag files from Windows Explorer onto an icon that resizes in the lower right corner of the desktop. More complex burning and copying can be done through wizards or manually.

For DVD authoring, Roxio includes support for every DVD burning format out there. It allows you to create movies, photo slide shows and more. It interfaces directly with digital video recorders to capture footage to the PC's hard drive, from where you can then burn them to a DVD. You can rearrange parts of a movie, trim clips, add sound, and more. The interface is functional at best, though, and casual film directors will pine for a simpler, more graceful solution than this program can offer.

The PhotoSuite applet's interface is overly friendly and not nearly powerful enough. Adding photos from a networked PC was a painstakingly slow process. Worse, once we'd picked out a few dozen photos, we went to create a VCD slide show and were met with an error message that even baffled Roxio tech support.

Another caveat: Easy CD automatically checks for product updates, but it forces you to register the product in order to download them. This invasion of privacy aside, Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 does provide some easy and user friendly features at the cost of clunky interfaces and limited options for power users.--Joel Durham ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beats Sonic and Nero hands down
I am very much into burning CD's and now DVD's with the help of Easy CD Creator 6. I have used many other burning software and have nothing but problems. Installing Nero 5 made me lose my drives and I was stuck in Tech Support hell......p. I also tried making VCD and DVD movies with Sonic My DVD and it was a very frustrating experience.

With Creator 6 I was able to capture my video easily, add the content to the DVD Builder layout and I created a DVD with menu's that played perfectly the first time I tried. I am telling you and hope you believe me when I say, this is the easiest CD and DVD burning application available hands down.

I also forgot to mention the MGI photo application that is now owned by Roxio is also bundled as well. The biggest improvement over Creator 4 and 5 is the Audio application Audio Central which lets you rip MP3's and edit the MP3 file and ID Tags which contain all the information of the file. It compares to the audio features of Microsofts media player.

I strongly recommend this suite of burning products to anyone that has a digital camera, video camera, dvd player, or wants to backup or create audio CD's. This application does it all.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very user friendly...or with lack of support services
I have to agree, I am very disappointed with the software and services...don't like the idea of talking to a computer or calling long distance. My biggest problem is losing all audio files when video is copied to DVD. I paid 100 for a DVD of an occasion and when I went to copy with this software, I lost all the original audio tracks on the tape:-(...mine was also buddled with Plextor DVD-burner. I have to think twice before I buy another of these products as I now am shopping for something better to replace this software...I also have Pinnicle and with the rendering and failing to copy over to the DVD, it's just about as bad...customer service is better though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Expensive but worth it
All CD&DVD burners tend to be fairly expensive, as usually software is. Comparing this to Nero, Roxio is a sure buy. It is really easy (surprise, surprise) to use, and it looks good.

It is also powerful, in the sense that you can do almost anything with it. You can even cut your music, design menus for your movie DVDs and create your own covers for your CD cases.

It comes with a helpful handbook that helps you deciding on wich application to use (Audio central, Creator Classic etc.).

One thing it lacks is a wizard. Wizards are always nice to use and keep you self-confident that you woun't waste your DVD disk though it is quite hard even without the wizard.

I didn't have any writer probelms, and I am overall happy with the product, though I think that once you buy an expensive DVD burner one has to buy an expensive program as well, though this does make burning so much easier than playing with codes and files and windows. If your looking for an powerful burner, this is what you should buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money...
The best thing about this product is that I got it via eBAY for $15.00. I know now why it was so cheap. The module that I was really interested in, DVD creator, is a total disaster. It is hard to use, confusing, and does not produce repeatable results. Forget about getting help from Roxio. I tried using the email route. About 3 days after submitting a question, you get some form-letter jibberish back, unrelated to the question. I refuse to pay for long distance. I also refuse to buy any more Roxio products, at any price.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Genuine Stinker
I got this software with a terrific Plextar PX-708UP disk drive. Why they include ROXIO I will never understand. Lot's of problems. It doesn't work along with Redxpress Express Copyware 3. After using Redxpress once, the computer would recognize the DVD drive, but the ROXIO program wouldn't. The exact same thing happened with my two machines, both equipped with Windows XP. Don't buy it. Ive consistently found ROXIO products to be low rent. The pits. Go with Nero. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, and pretty powerful
Given that this is a stripped down version of some of Sonic Foundry's more powerful (and expensive) professional tools, Acid Music 3.0 is still a pleasant surprise. I had it set up on my computer within ten minutes, and with very little tutoring from the instruction guide, was able to browse to the music loop library, "paint" out loops on the multi-track display, modify loop characteristics like reverb and bass, and so forth. Obviously, Acid Music 3.0 doesn't easily stand alone. This software cannot generate its own unique loops, so I wound up having to find a MIDI program that would let me create original loops for making truly original music. But as a non-musician who hosts a radio program and is a bona fide electronic music fan, Acid Music 3.0 made it super easy to assemble my MIDI tracks into pretty good sounding pieces. I would recommend this program to anyone, musician or non-musician, interested in breaking into the world of digital computer music creation. It's been almost three months since my wife gave me my copy as a gift, and I've managed to put together many different kinds of pieces of music, using both original content and the great loops that come with the program. It's a lot of fun, and has me hungering to see what more I can do with the thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Suprise!
I discovered this software by accident, while window shopping, and I ended up buying it and taking it home. I was able to get it up and running pretty quickly, and was creating my own music right out of the box. Of course it takes some time, but this program makes it possible to make some pretty good music in your spare time. Add a mic to your computer, and you can pretty much turn your computer into a recording/editing studio, make your own music and burn it to CD. Sounic Foundry also makes it easy to publish your work to the web, by providing an online community of Acid music-makers who review and comment on one anothers' work. You can also listen to music published by other users. Even if you're just a musical legend in your own living room, this makes it easy and fun to become just that. Sound Forge also sells music loops on CD especially for Acid, but you can find lots of free loops on the web that also work. Sound Forge also provides weekly samples for free on their Acid Planet website.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of the ACID Music series.
This one is definately the best out of all of the previous ACID Music programs. It has a ton of loops, a really cool looking skin, and much more options than in ACID 1.0 or 2.0. It comes with two CDs. One of them has the application on it with some loops and the other CD has nothing but loops and demo songs! It has over 1,600 unique loops! Definately a good buy for those who really liked any of the previous ACID Musics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for making original tunes quickly and easily.
This product, as well as other software developed by Sonic Foundry, is used in the gaming industry. It was even used to make the music in Summoner! I've been using this product for a while, and I have made tunes like THAT and saving them as MP3s, WAVs, and so forth. Heck, if I make a digital home video or something, I can rig it with music by adding the music in with ACID Music! Get this if you want to make games with tunes, show off to friends and make them say "Damn! You couldn't have made this!", or if you got other reasons to make some good music without needing to hire an orcastra (eat your heart out, John Williams)! ... Read more
