Amazon.com Review

DVDs (digital video discs) store high-quality MPEG-2 video, pristine Dolby Digital audio, and computer data, all integrated and playable from a single DVD-video player or DVD-equipped computer. DVD authoring is the process of combining all these elements into an interactive program. With multiple video and audio tracks, camera angles, multilingual capabilities, linked menus and buttons, Internet integration, and other features, an authoring project can involve complex procedures and scripting.

Apple's new DVD Studio Pro includes a great tutorial, along with associated media files, that demonstrate and explain the basics of the application. We ran through the tutorial in just over an hour, gaining a working knowledge of DVD Studio Pro's interface and functions, authoring language, and an inspiring taste of its power.

Installation is simple and painless. Three separate applications are installed on your hard disk within the host folder: DVD Studio Pro, Subtitle Editor, and A-Pack, for encoding AC-3 (Dolby) audio. QuickTime Pro must be installed and registered separately (you'll need it to encode QuickTime MPEG video). The elegant interface will be recognizable to Final Cut Pro users. In fact, DVD Studio Pro is designed with Final Cut integration in mind for creating source material. You can also use other video and audio applications with a compatible MPEG encoder.

Navigation within DVD Studio Pro is easy enough--there are four main windows with clickable tabs and drop-down menus. Video, audio, and graphic items can be imported or drag-and-dropped into the Project window. These items, known as assets, are detailed in the Property Inspector window. The Inspector lists all the attributes of every element, and contains text fields and drop-down menus for setting and changing their properties. The Graphical View window lets you navigate visually through your project's assets via folders that include a thumbnail image of the asset, and buttons that launch audio tracks, subtitles, markers, stories, and camera angles.

Building interactivity among the assets is, generally speaking, as simple as highlighting an element and specifying actions and attributes in the Property Inspector. In this way, you link program elements together in an interactive chain. Furthermore, DVD Studio Pro supports Adobe Photoshop layers for elaborate still menus and buttons that change state when activated. The indispensable Preview window allows you to immediately verify your event chain and make changes without burning a test disc. Likewise, a debugging feature lets you test all the links before multiplexing; during multiplexing, you can monitor the progress and respond to and fix any errors that might occur before copying to finished disc.

For extremely complex projects with multiple program chains and real-time encoding, DVD Studio Pro might not be the best answer. Expect to pay at least three times as much or more for higher-level authoring, though. With DVD Studio Pro, Apple has superbly reduced the potentially overwhelming nature of authoring in an easy-to-learn, powerful application that can't be surpassed at this price. Remember that this program is only version 1.1. Stick with and master it over time, as it's sure to get even better. --John Bosch ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Quirky Program Is Workable, But Frustrating
I just finished a DVD project using Studio Pro DVD, and I must say it was no treat. My project contained a slideshow, two three minute films, and a 6 minute film with an additional link to a website.

Although Studio Pro's interface is friendly, the layout of any project is restricted by limitations in the software. For instance, the WebLINK feature worked only intermittently. It's impossible to do both an audio and a video switch track, i.e. I hade two video's with two seperate audio tracks. There is no way to link the second audio track to the second video so that when the user only has to hit one button on the DVD controller.

To get a unique interface, Studio Pro suggests you create the background screens and button overlays in Photoshop then import the finished files into Studio Pro. O.K., Photoshop is certainly a good place to do a lot of photo editing and drawing, but the importing sequence back into Studio Pro is cumbersome.

The DVD burns also didn't go well from Studio Pro. I made three different burns at differnt compressions because no single compression played evenly on the test DVD players I used; including Sony, a DELL laptop, and a Panasonic. Jeez, if it won't play on a Sony it just won't play at all.

I ran this program on a new Mac under both OS 9.0 and OS X and had different quirks pop-up under each. No solution was completely satisfactory.

Nothing is perfect and this IS the first release of this software. I hope 1.5 is better. In the mean time, some of these problems can be worked around through judicious design. However, at (Money) a pop, I can recommend Studio Pro only to dedicated DVD designers and artist willing to climb the learning curve and put up with the quirks.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best low-priced DVD authoring solution available...
Before I purchased this product, I was attempting to use Impression 2.1 and My DVD 3.0 to author DVD's using my HP DVD 100i DVD+RW recorder. Using these programs, I found the task of authoring DVD's to be difficult and almost impossible. However, after I found MovieFactory by Ulead, I have had ZERO problems authoring DVD's for home use. This program makes capturing, editing, and burning DVD's extremely easy and user-friendly. While I have not tried the VCD and SVCD authoring modules of the program, I have no reason to believe they would work any differently, as they use the same engine.

Bottom line, if you are using the equipment I am using and mentioned above, you MUST have this software to simplify your DVD authoring. Before purchasing this program, I was disheartened to say the least as the process was extremely cumbersome. Now, however, I am burning DVD's like crazy. This software makes it easy!

2-0 out of 5 stars Can't create DVDs over 4GB
I spent days trying to find why my program was crashing while creating a Image file to burn on DVD. I tried almost all available upgrades for Windows XP Professional, DirectX, etc, etc but this thing kept crashing. Finally, I found that it can't create files over 4GB on FAT32 disk drive. Which means that all blank DVDs you buy will have to have almost 0.5 GB wasted if you have to use this software.

Another major drawback I saw with this otherwise very friendly interface is, it creates TITLES and not CHAPTERS for each file you add to the list of video files to make DVD. The drawback with this is if you select a chapter from menu, it plays only that chapter and comes back to the parent menu. This gets really annoying and I am currently so frustrated that I am already looking to replace this [money ammount] software for which I fortunately paid only [money ammount] due to some rebates and coupons...

4-0 out of 5 stars Straight forward creation of DVD and SVCD disks
I'm two days into the thirty day free trial.

The download and install went smooth as silk. I got an immediate connection to my Canon Optura PI thru a previous Firewire board and imported my video.

I created an SVCD on my first try, burned it to CD-R and played it in my Apex 1500 ...DVD player. The quality was great! Far superior to VCD which has low resolution and all kinds of blocky compression artifacts. The SVCD was DVD quality. I created an XSVCD using MPEG2-High Quality files I created using DVD Factory, but I couldn't tell any difference from the SVCD output. ...P>Why not four stars? The program is really an amalgam of two programs, the Video Toolbox for capturing and trimming the video, and the DVD Factory for authoring menus and creating the disks. Once you go forward from editing to export, you can't go back without exiting and restarting the program. And while the Video Toolbox does remember what files you have on the timeline, you can't save the project by name and open a new one.

I needed help to understand how to set cut-in and cut-out points and to trim the video. Also there is a right-click menu to allow you to "join" separate "scenes" but it is not in the online manual and I couldn't figure it out. I have just created a 35 minute, 690 megabyte SVCD which will not play the final MPEG file. Is this a bug in DVD Factory? A problem with my player? Or a limitation of the SVCD format to a standard 650MB CD? Inquiring minds want to know.

There is no editing available beyond trimming and reordering your imported video clips, and no titleing. It would be useful to be able to create very simple titles to identify clips in an assemble edit, but for that, you will have to step up to a real editing program.

Download it and give it a try. ...SVCD is video for the masses, at least until DVD-R media and drives are the same price as CD-R.

Recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, but very limited.
If you are just getting into the often frustrating world of hobby video, this program will help you get started. However, you won't learn much in the process. Basically, you run a wizard, and a few hours later you've got a (S)VCD/DVD. The menu is somewhat customizable--you can add your own backgrounds and music--but leaves a lot to be desired.

The biggest problem I have with Movie Factory is it's built in encoder. It just takes way too long and the quality isn't always that great. There is also a problem with audio becoming async when converting DivX/XVid to MPEG2 with Movie Factory; just test burn to a DVD-RW first, so you won't end up with a bunch of expensive coasters. To be fair, this can be a problem with many other authoring programs, and is a pain to fix.

Personally, I prefer DVD-Lab, though it costs more and is a tad harder to use. For $80 you get an authoring program that is fairly easy to use, yet is capable of producing professional quality DVDs, complete with fully customizable menus. Similar programs can cost hundreds, even thousands of dollars and won't be nearly as easy to use.

It also lacks an encoder, so you would probably want to look into TMPEGnc Plus (another $30.00) or Flask MPEG (Free). Actually, it's not a bad idea to use TMPEGnc instead of Movie Factory's encoder. Both DVD-Lab and TMPEG have 30 day demos available.

Regardless of which authoring program and encoder you go with, you'll definitely want to download a copy of Virtual Dub. This is probably the most useful piece of software you will ever use for video editing. It's also free. You'll also want to bookmark dvdrhelp.com; if you can't find a solution to your problem there, it probably can't be solved.

4-0 out of 5 stars A little fussy, but otherwise quite nice
I'll concur with some of the bad reviews; Ulead's customer support is snotty at their very best, and that's after sitting on hold for a half hour. However, I'm rejecting some of the bad reviews largely because the posters don't seem to know what to do with the software. DVD MovieFactory is ideal *if* you capture the video somewhere else. If you have a digital capture card, use the application that came with it to do the capturing (I use Creative's DigitalVCR). MovieFactory will only import files that adhere to DVD standards, so you'll probably need to convert the file to a 720x480 Mpeg-2. Adobe Premiere 6.5's MainConcept plugin can do that. However, once all that is said and done, MovieFactory works very smoothly. You can set chapter points effortlessly, create detailed sub menus for chapters, and even have accompanying music to each and every menu. Definately try it out before purchasing it, but if you give it what it wants, I think you'll be happy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This upgraded version is pure magic (again)
This is a significant update of an earlier product called "SERIOUS MAGIC Visual Communicator Plus" (ASIN B000066S28). The earlier product was one of the best tools for creating professional quality videos you could get at any price, and the same holds true for this updated version

Also, the real magic remains in the software, which is a self contained environment for creating videos - not merely editing them. I love the templates that provide a 'program format' such as news, the animated backgrounds, and stock video and sound clips. The automated wizards make creating a presentation a snap, and this version adds integration with web sites, DVDs and PowerPoint.

You'll need the following minimum hardware and software to install and use the software: Windows® 98, 98SE, ME, 2000 or XP, an 800 Mhz or faster Pentium III processor or equivalent, a 16MB AGP graphics card with 3D acceleration and Internet Explorer 5.0 or above. For interfacing camcorders you'll need a video input card, such as a Firewire or analog capture device that is compatible with your camcorder. You also have to make sure that the interface has a Windows DirectShow compatible driver. To make sure that you are working with the most up-to-date requirements go to ASIN B00006GME4 and check for the latest updates.

If ever there was a killer application looking for a market, this is it. Visual Communicator has business and personal uses that will allow anyone with the right equipment and a touch of creativity to make compelling presentations in the business environment and send greetings to friends and relatives that are far beyond what one can do with paper. It's also useful for proposals, training and just about any other use that will be enhanced by visual communication. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Bad Product
Save your money, this product don't work. The input from my capture device is choppy and out of sync with audio. Support is worst than the product. would give it a lower rating, but this is the lowest I can give.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad
This program came bundled with my computer. It is pretty bad. It has limited features and I can't play DVD's on my JVC DVD Player recorded with this software. I tried DVD's and VCD's with programs like Showbiz 2 which is very good and with Movie Factory 3 and I can even play those in the play station 2. Also the video and sound skip a lot and it has pretty low quality. It was a major disappointment so I had to buy extra software. I Chose Movie Factory because it was cheaper, and of the same quality as showbiz, and also included burn now for recording data or music to disc. I even recorded some slide shows of my parent's recent trip to England on Movie Factory and they were very impressed. The program might work for you, but I wouldn't recomend it to any one, try the demos of other software you can download directly from the internet and then choose the one that works the best for you. Most video editing software offer free trials for up to a month.

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work
I have used WINDVD Creator for about a year and decided to upgrade to WINDVD Creator 2 Platinum. I purchased from Amazon because of my experience purchasing many items and the excellent price. I received the product and installed it and it doesn't work. The program "crashes" when making a DVD. I have tried repeatedly to contact InterVideo and have not received a response. I now have a piece of software that doesn't work and can find no technical assistance.

4-0 out of 5 stars home video tool
In short - this is a very good product.
I tested all the features and created all the formats with various types of files and EVERYTHING WORKED AS SPECIFIED!
VCD quality is surprisingly good - a perfect solution to transfer old home videos. SVCD discs are really just a little bit short of a DVD quality, too bad chapters cannot be created in this format.
The best of all are various DVD formats - you can put half an hour content on one regular 700MB disc - amazing! This is just perfect for your home movie studio.
DVD formats are standard, one hour - high quality, 2h - standard quality on one 4.7 Gb disc. For transfer of AVI files from a DV camcoder, it is good to select one hour disc option.
Editing and authoring tools may seem a little bit complicated until you try them, and then, you must love them.
Advanced features can be used for other purposes, if you have time to play with it (sound editing, etc.)

The reason why not 5 stars is simply support - the staff that respond to calls has a limited knowledge of their own product and this may frustrate power users.

User's guide is ok, but that too, could have been done better.

Generally, this is a very good product and I recommend it to all who'd like to quickly create professional quality home DVD's. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best DVD Authoring App on Market!!!
I've been authoring DVDs for years. I started off using Sonic Solutions authoring suite. We paid almost $... for this system in 1997. And SOnic only runs in OS9. Now you can have all that functionality for only $... with DVD Studio Pro. DVD Studio Pro 1.5 offers welcome improvements such as OS X compatibility, more-reliable previews, higher MPEG-2 compression quality, and tighter integration with Final Cut Pro 3, and the program remains the only viable choice for professional DVD authoring on the Mac. But Apple needs to deliver another version that improves usability, the bit-budgeting process, and documentation, so that new users can get up-to-speed faster and experienced users can work more efficiently. If you are serious about making DVDs, I suggest you have a dedicated machine for DVD Studio Pro. Once you start installing games and weird shareware apps, you will have issues with crashing and such. Bottom Line: This is a great application for a pro user and does everything "high end" systems like Sonic does, but better. Nice work Apple!

1-0 out of 5 stars A poorly conceived product
If you have a Mac, you really have no choice, this is all there is, and that's a shame. After using this program for the past month, I am considering buying a PC, and throwing away my Mac. It's that bad. Where Final Cut Pro shines, DVD Studio Pro [is not good]. If you do buy this software, be sure and buy Martin Sitter's excellent how-to book, as the slim provided manual tells you nothing. Martin Sitter's book will have you turning out DVD's in no time, provided you don't do something crazy like try to create a disc with subtitles.
This software is incredibly buggy. It crashes constantly. The Subtitle Editor (STE) is worse than useless, it is a crime against all of us who purchased this. Apple should be sued.
The STE uses non-drop-frame timecode, while the rest of the software demands you use dropframe (or else your audio won't synchronize properly). This leads to horrible build conflicts when chapter markers and subtitles are used together. (Unless you don't care if your audio is synced.)
Did I mention the crashes? The Apple DVD player is worthless, it won't even play commercial DVD's without crashing. Then there problems with DVD-9 layer breaks - I haven't tried building a DVD-9 yet, but I'm not looking forward to it, based on what I've read online. This program should not be sold as it is. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Non responsive program, try the free trial before buying.
I have the free trial from the ulead website, this software has really nice customization features for the menus, but other than that its no good. Whenever I finish setting up my dvd and try to burn it my computer freezes, I cant make an image of the dvd either. My computer is a Sony Vio 2.66 ghz with 512ddr ram so I'm almost positive its not my computer causing the program to be non responsive. Since there is a free trial available at ulead.com definately try it before you buy it or you will most likely be wasting a lot of money.

1-0 out of 5 stars I agree... Don't bother
This is the buggiest video software I've ever used!! I cannot get it to complete a project after spending a whole evening creating a nice menu. It constantly crashes when trying to test it. There are some serious problems with this software that Ulead has yet to fix, and I've been waiting for nearly a year now! When you talk to them about it, it's obvious that they don't know what they're doing. I wish I could get my $300 back - what a waste.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
For the price, this product is definitely not worth it. The help files included are a joke. I was having trouble with dropped frames, so I looked under dropped frames and it says "Displays the total number of frames that were dropped or lost during capture. " It doesn't say a thing regarding an explanation what causes dropped frames or how to resolve the issue. This software reminds me of the stuff you would find in the discount rack in a jewel case for ... at your local computer superstore...

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast and Flexible
I produced a Video CD within 2.5 hours with this software on my first go. My Video CD included 4 photo album slide shows (20 pictures each), 3 video clips, and 3 menus - all with background music. I can't believe how easy it was. The interface is simple to use. At first, I thought it may not be very flexible because of its simple interface but what it provides seems to be all that one needs. This is a great all-in-one application that replaces all my previous VCD authoring software, such as the Philips VCD toolkit, the endless media conversion tools, and the CD-R burning application.

4-0 out of 5 stars DVD Workshop - opinion on Ulead trial version
I've used the DVD Workshop Trial Edition for about 20 days now and it seems to be a great value...I've produced 2 DVDs with it from my home movies. It's highly customizable, allows video backgrounds for menu screens, supports background music, and makes setting chapter points a breeze. I've had a few problems with the Trial version and like many other Ulead customers I can't say their customer support is very good - I think they are overwhelmed. That's not to say the product is buggy, just that the few problems it has aren't intuitive to resolve. DVD MovieFactory, also from Ulead, is their entry level version of this product...I do plan to purchase DVD Workshop when my trial expires. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars THIS SOFTWARE IS GARBAGE!
I got this as bonus software on a Photo Explosion Deluxe package. I installed it, I made sure my photos were .jpgs, etc. I mean, I'm not stupid and I can read the simple instructions. It previewed on my computer just fine. I'm running XP-Home. Anyway, I can't burn the CD... it goes through the motions then it gives me one of 4 different reasons it won't burn. I called Tech Support. One guy was really rude, the next guy was good and said he'd send a new installation disk that day. Two weeks later, I got it. Uninstalled the program, reinstalled from the new disk, and OH BOY! A FIFTH ERROR MESSAGE. My computer is new, fast, and has an extra graphics card. 10GB hard drive, 512, the works. I am so sorry I got so excited about this worthless piece of software. BUY SOMETHING ELSE!

1-0 out of 5 stars Sort-of works
I got the 1.04 version with Photo Explosion. The CD slide show feature was the main reason I bought PE. I didn't realize at the time it was Bonus Software, and not PE that did this.

I've had mixed success. I have created a VCD using my Win ME system (128 MB RAM) with about 30 or so photos and music. OK there's not much you can do with the music, but I don't care, I just want to send photos around on CD, not do fancy, timed, multi-media presentations.

When I tried to make a CD with 130 photos (about 100 MB total project size), PhotoPlay wrote the slide show, then caused the OS to thrash about for memory for about 15 minutes, and aborted without writing the PC player software to the CD. (I could head the disk seeking, so I assume ME was doing a virtual memory dance)

I tried to write the same project using Win 2K Pro, SP 3, 256 MB RAM. It did even worse. It tried for 20+ minutes to format the show before giving up. Not a byte was written to the CD.

Keep in mind the FAQs on their web site indicate 500 photos and 700 MB CDs can be made.

I tried the same project, again, on a Win XP Pro system (don't know the RAM size) and it worked as expected.

Results: I can play the properly completed CDs on Win ME and XP systems. Smaller projects, 30 or so photos, play on Win 2K with no trouble. My bigger project (130 photos) does not play on Win 2K. It loads for a while, then puts up half a photo and locks up.

I have tried them on 5 different DVD players. Three work perfectly, two show the photos properly, but screw up the music.

My Samsung P421 player, for example, plays the music at double speed. (less expensive dvd player from a local store_)door buster special, plays the photos and music just fine. I am assuming the problem is with the player and not the CD since it works on more players than it fails on.

I have contacted tech support about my failed to write the CD issues, but have not had any response as yet (about 48 hours later).

This software would be fine for what I need, IF it worked properly. Approach with caution, especially if you run Win ME (my profound sympathy if you do), or Win 2K.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money!
I received this software as "bonus" with Photo Explosion Delux. It's terrible. Was easy to create the slideshow and it looked great on my computer. Tried it on 2 DVDs and it didn't play. Tried to re-record it on a CD-RW and it still didn't work! It did run on my husband's laptop, but out of 6 computers I tried it on at work it only was recognized on 1! Very frustrating software. SAVE YOU MONEY FOR SOMETHING BETTER.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it!
It wasn't long before I realized I just wasted (my money) on this near worthless software. No transitions effects/No ability to burn multiple albums to a VCD/Horrible music timimng!/No SVCD support/
Music drop outs during slideshow. Sorry but I can't recomend this
software to anyone!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible!
I just recently purchased this near worthless software and found out very quickly that I just wasted [my money]! The music timing is all up to you!(so why did I buy this program?) They give you a chart and you must arrange the number of pictures to fit the music or else your slides end in an awkward manner without music or overrun. Yes you can adjust the time for all the slides but it's in 1 second intervals and in a 50 picture show that's 50 seconds
a show you can be off by because you can't adjust each frame it's all or nothing. ... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Amatuer authoring
The program won't do motion menus, and it tells you when you start up that it wants to run with only a few colors instead of normal resolution so you know that it isn't very advanced. Then I have tried several different hardware configurations and I am using XP with several different codec settings and the dumb program keeps crashing, I'm not really into updating into the beta versions of software but I think you going to have to in order to get your moneys worth out of this program. I have gotten it to work with really common compression settings like Microsft DV AVI but nothing else though and really small movies, not large ones. I'd say it's more like $10 rather than $500.

1-0 out of 5 stars Crashiest program I've ever used!
The features supposedly supported by this program sound great, but the program crashes or errors out every time. A major disappointment for a piece of software this expensive.

Bottom line: There isn't any decent DVD authoring software yet that doesn't cost thousands of dollars. If you want to burn decent DVDs right now, use a Mac!

4-0 out of 5 stars a great product
