Outstanding value compared to Adobe Premiere 6/6.5
I'm an amateur videographer and this software is perfect for me. I outgrew Ulead's VideoStudio program after a few months, but MSP 6.5 offers all the precise control and, more importantly, multitrack editing that more complex projects require. I run MSP 6.5 DC smoothly on a Dell Dimension 4100 Pentium III 866 w/384MB RAM and 16MB ATI Rage 128 Pro video board. I also have a second hard drive just for video footage; if you want your video editor to run smoothly, you need a dedicated drive to handle preview files.

LIKES: Instant Preview. Mulitiple tracks. Easy transition tweaking. (Few transitions are included, but they're the ones I'm most likley to use, not the whacky, distracting ones.) Device control is responsive and compatible with my Panasonic MiniDV camera. Ulead DVD plug-in included, although I don't have a DVD writer, just a CD-RW. Exports VideoCD and popular streaming file formats. Detailed help system.

DISLIKES: Batch capturing isn't very intuitive. (Adobe Premiere makes this easier, but considering it costs [price] more, I can live with this process very happily.) Also, you can't capture video without the audio. (Boo! C'mon, Ulead! Would it be THAT hard?) Like most software manuals, this one falls short; it seems to give about 70 percent of what you need, teaching you just enough to be dangerous. Finally, I expected the Production Library to be more of a "home base" like Premiere's Project window, but it's still helpful. I havent' messed with the Storyboard feature yet, but it looks useless. Ulead online tech support is slow to respond to queries.

SUMMARY: Spend four or five hours playing around with the program before you begin a serious project, and you should be fine. It's a lot fun, it's powerful, and it's a great bargain compared to the competition.

Pro without the price
I just got this for my bother and he loves it! I've been an avid user of Ulead MediaStudio Pro for some time now. It has served me extremely well and I often show it to others. But any software at the price is not an impulse purchase for most people, so some of my friends who would like to get into this stuff have not yet. Director's Cut is a great move! Looks easy to use, but it's not
At first glance this software looks easy to use: drag and drop your photos, and viola, you have a slideshow. But the software is not at all user friendly so you end up spending your whole time trying to figure it out. I spent my first 15 minutes just trying to find the browser button so I could upload some photos! Turns out it was a miniscule obscure button about the size of a fingernail sliver. The manual is useless because it tells you to consult the help section, and the help section is a copy of the manual. The "Create CD/DVD" part of the software is even more confusing. You end up resorting to clicking on everything in sight to see what happens, and then you have to wait and wait because the software is so slow. I started wondering if I was having problems with my mouse or computer, but no, it was the software.

If after all this work at least I had ended up with a decent slideshow, I would have given this a 3 star rating. But I wasn't able to get anything usable. There are tons of bugs in the audio, so that when you add backround music you end up erasing photos, eliminating the audio track of the videos, changing the times the photos are displayed, or the whole thing simply crashes.

On top of all of this, the software doesn't do what it advertises and what I bought it specifically to do: create presentations that can be copied onto a CD-Rom and seen on a computer. Turns out that in CD-Rom format you can copy the photos, but not the videos. And the sound tracks also don't copy as backround music but as separate tracks. Or at least that's what I think. I can't be sure because the playback software which automatically copies onto the CD-Rom is so incredibly confusing that I never did figure it out.

I have yet to try to make a copy of my presentation in VCD format for my DVD player. Maybe that will work out better, but I'm not holding my breathe.

I really regret having bought this, especially considering all the other options there are out there. Keep looking and buy some other software for your photo slideshows!

Pictures to CD & DVD
I was very dissapointed in this software. You can only aquire pictures from a digital camera or a scanner.I have several folders of pictures on my PC hard drive and I can't down load them into this program. 5 emails to Magix about this problem and so far they asked me to send them some of my pictures to look at "?". In there return emails not one gave me a way to down load from my hard drive. This would be a great program except for this one problem.

Terrible product!
I wish I had checked these reviews before I actually bought it. At first, the product seems easy to use. But adding music and aligning it with the photos is the first trouble. I have approximately 100 pictures in the slide show, which should not be too much for a video that I want to play on TV, but the software gets awfully slow. Saving the show resulted in an error message with a couple of hours of work lost.

I thought Magix was a brand name that I can trust. Be careful before you buy it!

Every Feature Has A Bug
This program is so full of bugs it's extremely frustating to use. Examples:

In addition to an upgrade, a separate CD burner patch is required to be downloaded to get a list of supported drives, with note that if your drive is not listed and not brand new, you're out of luck.

If you try to use the playback option while recording audio, i.e., dubbing your voice onto the track while watching the video as you record, you get a soundcard conflict. The only way to dub narration is to turn off the playback option so you can't see whats playing as you speak.

There are no options for volume, background music is too loud to hear narration.

In storyboard mode, the cursor sometimes gets out of sync with the preview, so you don't really know what clip you have selected.

Image editing gets mixed up, if you rotate an image, the next time you select it, it may preview rotated or not.

Rotated images used in the DVD menu don't retain the rotation.

The built in file explorer is difficult to navigate. If you open a directory containing MPG's, the explorer tries to scan through the entire file before displaying the file names. Gigabyte size files take forever.

If you listen/preview a music file with media player (external to this program), the program errors and terminates when you return to it, due to some soundcard driver conflict.

When you click around enough to get a music file selected in the file explorer to play/preview in this program, it sometimes goes into this buzzing mode, then inserts the music file into your project.

Sometimes when you select and drag a music file into your program, the built in windows file explorer jumps to the top of itself and imports a different file than what you selected.

Poor picture quality
After my recent vacation, I was excited to find this program and to share copies of my digital pictures with friends and family who could watch them on their TVs. The program had some nice features and seemed easy to use. Unfortunately, I spent too much time putting my slideshow together without testing the end result first. I was burnt not my cd's
I recently broght the software from target. when i upgraded to xp pro my Roxio no longer worked. not wanting to pay $50 for roxio i decided to go cheaper. I have now wasted more money on CD-R that the program has messed up. I will now have to go and buy a more expencive but much more reliable piece of software. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DON'T BUY THIS!!! IT SHOULD HAVE -50 STARS!

Burnt and Go is more like it
I to got burnt by this lousy software. The program crashes alot. I to feel like I just threw away good money. I wish instead of trying to save some money I would have went with the original software program I wanted, Sure Thing by Microvision.

"Boo-Hiss"
Ok...so I am somewhat of a rookie at burning CD's, however this software stinks. I have a brand spankin' new Dell with all the memory that any Grandma would cherish. Of course, my CD-RW drive is not supported by this software and I too rec'd the cold shoulder from customer service. They gave me absolutely no time line on updated drivers and also had the nerve to tell me that I had to go back and check their list periodically to see if my drive had been added. Wow! Now THAT made me feel like I was a priority...I will try to return to Best Buy today, if not I will throw it on the ground and stomp on it until I am breathless.....

Another Iomega Dud!
Disappointing software and even more disappointing customer service.
"Burn and Go" would not recognize my CD Burner. I emailed Iomega customer service and they said I should wait until they updated the drivers on their web site, then download them. They could not give me ETA when they would get around to updating my driver. They also could not authorize a refund, but they gave me an 800 phone number. When I phoned Iomega they said they would not authorize a refund because I didn't buy directly from Iomega.
Thank God the retailer where I purchased "Burn and Go" gave me a store credit after I showed them the e-mail and explained the circumstances.
Not the 1st time with problems with products from Iomega. No more Iomega products for me.

disappointing
Yeah, I know this is bottom-of-the-barrel stuff, but it's still disappointing. Seems to copy CDs well enough, but oddly, seems to have trouble copying material from my hard drive. I'd advise the humble consumer to spend a few more dollars and look elsewhere. ... Read more

Great software
After searching forever for software that i could use to copy photos and videos so i could watch them on my dvd player i came across this excellent software.After a little trial and error i got it to work perfect""It plays videos and makes slideshows very well.I could not be happier.

Sounds good on paper
I purchase this program hoping I can put together a photo slideshow as a farewell present for a coworker and also as a slideshow gift for my niece. I tried the trial version first. It has very easy menus and I was able to create my first slideshow in 20 minutes. It worked great in my home DVD. I decided to purchase the program the next day. After finalizing the DVD I decided to try out the slideshow at work. It didn't work in two DVD's at my work place. I tried at two other people DVD's, still nothing. I went back and I tried different setup menus. After wasting more than 25 CD's I decided to call the company. The technical support recommendation: purchase a similar DVD so my niece can play the slideshow!!!!! What a waste of time and money!! The program sounds good on paper, does not deliver. Of course it's not Toast, but...
it does everything it says it will do. The box I bought never mentioned it would burn or copy movie DVDs (I believe that is still illegal thanks to Hollywood), and clearly states that it would "Burn data DVDs, multi-session data VDs, audio CDs, erase CD-RW & create disc images."

I am happy with this software, and am happier to see a more affordable alternative to Toast...Toast may be a great program, but I never used more than half of its features. Just my opinion...

*Claims* to burn DVDs
...says it burns DVDs on the outside of the box. But after you open the box and install the software you find it's only data DVDs.

If you want to burn video DVDs (e.g. for a DVD player), you need UDF. This program doesn't support it, and acts like there's no such thing by not documenting it.

Everything this thing does is already part of OS X (e.g. burn data DVDs, audio CDs, erase CD-RWs & create disc images). If you teach yourself how to use the features of OS X to do the same tasks, then you've saved $30.

Dragon Burn may be worth a try. It's only $15 more, and it isn't a $100 feature-overkilled piece of software like Toast. Plus they have a trial version.

This MacBurn software adds no value, I think. If you still like MacBurn, good for you.

Not Toast... not even a cracker...
This product isn't nearly as good as Toast, and barely better than the burning provided by the OS for free.

If you want to do more than what the OS provides, spend the extra $50 for Toast.

MacBurn is a cost effective program for burning audio CDs, and data CDs and DVDs. It is easy to load, works great in OS X (10.2.6 but best in 10.3) and straight is forward to use with either selection or drag and drop features. System requirements include a CD or DVD burner compatible with OS X, 700 MB of free HD space for burning about 80 minutes of Audio to CD, and Disk Image (ISO and DMG) creation only for OS X 10.3 and greater.

The program does all that it is advertised to do which is burn data to DVDs, do multi-session data on a CD, burn audio CDs, erase a CD-RW and create disk images. Well, actually I have to take their word for the disk image part since I didn't actually do this part. Loading the program is very straight forward as is the instruction booklet. However when I had
questions as to what an ISO or DMG was I couldn't find an answer. Being a non-geek I'm not familiar with these terms. Naturally I went to the HELP menu to see if I could find a bit more information. It wasn't too much help. There was just a slight bit more information in the HELP menu than what was in the included instruction booklet and it did not define ISO or DMG.

The program operated just fine for copying data on the Mac format and I actually could do multiple sessions on one CD. That is a useful feature. One thing to note here is that the multiple session feature only works on the Mac format. It is not an option for PC or Mac/PC hybrid. Multiple sessions are not recommended for audio CDs either. It can be done but the instructions indicate that some strange things may happen and it is not recommended. I just took their word for that too. It is possible to mix an audio session with a data session on a CD which is another handy feature. For those using rewritable CDs and DVDs the program can erase data so the disk can be reused.

The program will locate the drive that can write the CD/DVD or if there are multiple drives you can make your choice in the box below the menu panel. Then choose either data or audio session. Below that is the format selection box and the title box. There are several choices here. I must say that I was not able to use the Mac/PC hybrid option and produce a CD that could be read on a PC. I could do it with the PC option, just not the hybrid option. The next box contains the files to be copied. They can be dragged and dropped into this area or selected with the "Add File" or "Add Folder" buttons. A nice feature is the bar on the bottom of the pane which tallies how much space will be used on the disk.

When the burn button is activated this box drops down for further instructions. The "Allow Additional Burns" box must be checked in order to do multiple sessions on one CD or DVD. FAR OUTPACES SIMILAR SOFTWARE
Have been looking for a product that is easy but powerful to work with multiple video files, do the edits, insert transition and effects, and implement near pinpoint timing of audio elements. This product does it all as represented and if I didn't stumble upon it at an incredibly low price, I wouldn't have investigated it at all. For those yearning for its limitations, the only suggestion would have been for the manufacturer to provide a video of putting together a sample edited video. Otherwise, one has to click on the icons to learn the parameters of offered features, but again the time involved to pursue it is small compared to the power and ease of the product. ... Read more

Excellent program, mediocre documentation
After installing this program, I was able to (fairly quickly) capture video and sound off of my camcorder, do some basic editing in the program, add music in the background, and save into a file to make a Video CD. I am now starting to play around with the titles, subtitles, and sound / video effects available in the program. I've created videos up to an hour long, and I haven't hit any bugs yet. Compared to other video editing packages reviewed here, this is quite an accomplishment.

The only reason I knock this down to four stars is that the documentation glosses over key areas, like how to output your work. For example, there are perhaps a dozen options related to outputing video to an MPEG file, but the manual only has *two lines* of text devoted to the subject (not including the page explaining how to upgrade your MPEG-2 encoder). I've ended up outputting video as DV-AVI and using TMPGEnc (freeware) to convert to MPEG. If Magix would plug the holes in the manual this would definitly be a 5-star program, esp. considering the price.

Buy this program!!!!!!!!!!!
I first passed on this program because of the price. I thought, it couldn't possably do much for [$$$]. After Tech-TV tested it, and recommended it, I downloaded the demo and was amazed how great it is. I have Movieshaker and it will only make a 9 min movie. I have Ulead and MGI, both crash on Xp often and capture is not always good. This program supports my DV-8 and sends it back to the camcorder over my firewire.
I found the manual to be helpful but I am not a beginner. Others have complained that it is not enough (I don't agree).

Buy at your own risk after reading this review
It sounds extreme, but in my opinion, this program is terrible. I got it for $$ and now I am trying to get my money back. In the reviews it sounds very good. I used it on a Window 2000 computer with 768 meg. of memory and an 80 gig hard drive with an AMD 1.3 ghz processor and a NVidia TNT2 32 meg. video card. My regular job is as a Computer Support Specialist and Programmer so I work with - many programs. Here's my experience that supports the poor rating I give the program...
= Right after the installation of the program, it automatically starts up the Video Deluxe program. When it did, immediately it came up with an "Error loading audiovis.dll" message. The program did continue to load. Twice when I subsequently started the program, that error message occurred. What effects it has in using the program I don't know.
= Twice when I exported a movie using QuickTime Movie Export with all default settings except sound set to 11k and Mono, the Video Deluxe froze up the computer an hour into the render. I gave up. (Note - I have 25+ other major software programs on this machine that I've used for a year and they work fine..
= When you are Exporting (rendering), which can take 9 hours like it did to an .AVI file, there is no dialog to Cancel it once it begins. When I did ESC to stop an export, the Video Deluxe froze up and in the Win 2k - Task Manager it said "Program not Responding" and I had to crash the program to stop it.
= The Help in the program is terrible. For instance, when I went to do an Export, a dialog popped up asking if I wanted to export a range or the whole movie. In Help, there is no data at all on how to set a Range. At times the Help came up in German, not English.
= I finally dug up some info that - inferred indirectly - on how to set a Range when I looked in help on info about the "Edit Menu". I used the info to set a Beginning Marker and End Marker per their directions. I even tested the settings by using Zoom to Range between Beginning and End markers, and the program - did - zoom to the range I setup. But then when I used the Edit Menu - Range Extract which Help says will delete everything in the video - except - the range, Video Deluxe did the opposite. It removed the range I wanted to keep instead and kept the rest of the movie.
I could go on about other things that were disappointing in the 3+ hours I wasted on the program (like how their Tutorial video is so distorted when it plays, you cannot even read it's screen examples).
My job is working with software 50-60 hours a week and the 3+ hours I spent repeatedly trying to use this program to perform the simple tasks I purchased it for, were wasted. The program might have been conceived of by a genius, but it was implemented by poor design and bugs.

This was so great, I upgraded!
I enjoyed learning how to use Magix' Video Deluxe in version 1 and liked it so much I bought version 2. Version 2 includes DVD menus and authoring, which version 1 does not. If you don't need DVD authoring - if you can make do with emailing your videos, posting them online, or sending back to your camera for VHS, this is an excellent program.

Lies! Lies! Lies!
I bought this software for one reason: It indicated that it could import lots of file types. Much to my horror I can't open anything! NOTHING! Not .mov files, not any .mpeg files, not .wm files, not .avi files. It keeps telling me "bad file type." After having numerous files custom rendered off an avid system I was able to open them with Adobe Premier but NOT with this program. I wanted to scream each time. Magix got my money but I will always remember the name "Magix" and never EVER buy another product from this quack company again. ... Read more

Total Burn
Installation is too nagging. If you have other software in that category, you may not be able to use it after installing total burn. Keep that in mind.

Once on, it's nice. I used their dvd maker to learn how to use Pinnacle Studio 8.
You can link avi's to make one big file, but it likes to keep the opening & ending fades. I'd use another program for that if you can. But I have had some good results with it.

Making Data dvd isn't bad, just have the right dvd for your burner. Sometimes it's an issue with cd burners, but that's so common any longer, most house brands work. DVD's are a bit different.
The make a label software is only good if you haven't anything else. If you Print Master or Shop, then you have a better program already.
Oh, Total doesn't like Avery's After Burner software. Just a tip.

Overall, for one package deal, it's worth thirty bucks, more or less.

Demo Nero instead.
I bought it because I trust the Broderbund name. It does not run on my Win98SE machine with a Sony DRU500 drive. It BSODs at the bootup of windows because a Broderbund/TotalBurn .VXD is incorrect for my system. Win98 users beware. Because I did not real research before purchasing, I only discovered the feature set after I'd boughten the package. This Totalburn package does not have the features a power user needs.

As a newbie home-movie creator, this is perfect for me
I have never used Movie editing software before, but I am computer savvy. I needed a Firewire card and editing software, and this product contained both at a price well below the cost of either item purchased alone. The firewire card went in without issue. And I was using the editing software withing 20 minutes. It was pretty intuitive: you load clips from your camcorder via the firewire and then drag them onto the story line and edit them, crop them, and pick transitions. I haven't tried anything more fancy than that. For my basic needs, this is perfect - and it appears to be extensible with plugins, if I decide that I need more at some point. ... Read more

Fatal Error After Installation (Windows XP System)
I just purchased this today. I have already decided to return the software. After I installed Digital Studio Vers. 2 and the included software for video editing (MovieShop 6 Select), I could not start MovieShop 6 Select. I got a dialog box informing me of a "Fatal Error" and "Cannot initiate. Please reinstall." I uninstalled and reinstalled twice, and it still gave me the same error message. I have Windows XP operating system and my computer exceeds the minimum system requirements for this software. All installation instructions were followed. Online technical support weren't helpful. Calling technical support (not toll-free) would require me to hold for about 25 minutes. Technical support email response time is 5 hours. I decided it's just not worth the time. ... Read more

Stay away from this piece of [garbage] at all costs...
Put nicely, Videosuite 3.0 is terrible. It took me a couple days to figure out how to bring in video (MGI is so smart that they don't include an instruction manual with the software). After I finally had to have a computer-expert friend come over and make the thing work, it made me want to cry. The process of puting clips together is basically impossible, and adding music...forget about it. All I wanted was a little program to help me get started in making skate videos. Usually, when software falls short, the effort itself is worth some praise, but Videowave III...holy crap. I repeat: avoid at all costs, except if you need a really expensive coaster. On second thought, it's so bad that it would probably make a terrible coaster too. I returned the thing a week after I made the mistake of buying it....

Good With the Right Hardware
I have used all of the versions of Video Wave and I even have Version 4.0. I've also used the Ulead products and the Home Video from Canon.

Video Wave III works, if your pc is configured for it. It has a limited number of video cards with which it works well. It doesn't seem to like AMD processors as much as it does Pentium III's.

The instructions are almost useless and you can get four very different sets of instructions from their technical support people if you call with the same question four times because the first three solutions made things worse.

I was able to turn out an acceptable industrial video (28 minutes) with it. There is no good way to add narration.

The learning curve is more in getting your hardware and the needed drivers from MGI and others to match the many settings you can make inside of Video Wave IIII than in actually using the software. The interface is good. And it can do many things very well.

It doesn't like Windows 98 2nd Edition or Windows 2000. I have to wipe it clean and reinstall it quite often. But, it is the best of what is out there at the advanced home video producer level.

I just tried to install 4.0 and it wouldn't install on a system which did the best job with 3.0. So, I'll be back in touch with their tech people. It took over 23 hours of actual back and forth with them to make 3.0 work acceptably.

Enjoyable, fun and easy.
Originally bought this to upgrade VideoWave SE that came with my Iomega Buz analog capture card. Unfortunately it was not compatible with the hardware. Well my analog camcorder died and I ugraded to a Sony digital 8 and a firewire card. Have been using 3.0 now for 4 months making home videos and the familiar interface from SE has been added plus. Haven't had time to dig too deep into this program but for making quick home movies, it is easy to use if you at least take a quick look at the instructions or use the packaged tutoring cd. The only problem I've had is when I plug the camera in or turn the camera on after the program is started, most of the time it does not recognise the camera is there. So, make sure your camera is plugged in and turned on before you open the program. Other than that I have not had any problems.

a good quality product
this product is great, with a few glitches. i like the interface once you get used to it. i noticed that after producing videos, transitions have a bit of a 'hiccup' when the transitions start and end. my system is custom built with 256 mb ram and an athlon 650, and a quantum fireball 7200 rpm hard drive, so i know its not the hardware. my biggest problems however, have to do with interfacing the computer with my jvc cam. the dv capture works perfectly, but exporting the finished product to the cam can prove troublesome. overall, however, i think the videos look great, the interface is flexible and you can do a lot with this program. i have pinnacle's studio DV and adobe premiere, but most of the work i do is done with videowave because its quick and simple. i would recommend this product for almost all home and semi professional uses.

This product is my saviour!
Before I bought this product I was using the aweful video capture software with the Voodoo 3 TV card. Not only does this software allow capture in MPEG1,2 and AVI but you can caputure just the sound, video, stills etc.

Then I found the editing functions. It took a while to get used to the new MGI interface (the same for MGIPhotosuite) but it is very intuitive.

To build a film and produce it is done with ease. You can have all the basic editing like trasnstions, captions, effects, add audio etc. This is for any would be producer but of course if you are a professional then stay clear as this is vey basic but very good! It satisfies all my needs for video capture and editng, has loads of options and is all at a good price! I just wish you could get rid of the annoying introduction at the start! ... Read more
