5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Video Editing
Reviewing a program like Media Edit Pro is a tough slog. Not because of any shortcomings of the program but because it was completely different from what I expected. Perhaps a brief description of the review process is in order. What I review is stuff that interests me, and I'm interested in Movies. So when I saw a press release for Media Edit Pro I thought "Hey, Here's a movie editor more robust than iMovie but cheaper than Final Cut Express, that's something I'd like to try." A couple of e-mails later and I had a copy. I installed Media Edit Pro (which is growing tiresome to type so I'll truncate the title to MEP in future references) with no problems. then I downloaded and installed the update. Still a problem free experience. Found some footage to play with and fired up the program to give MEP it's first test run. Big Problem.

The problem wasn't with the program, it just wasn't what I was expecting. I expected a simple but more robust movie editing program, I was wrong. The program is called Media Edit Pro for a reason and the reason is that MEP is not just a movie editing program (one assumes the author put more thought in the title than I did when I read it) but a full fledged media editing program (hence the text). That means pretty much any media you care to mess with. I only care to mess with video stuff so I'm sticking to the video side, but from the little I know about audio and stills it seems that MEP would be quite capable in that department. Let's hit the easy stufff right now, MEP includes plenty of effects and transitions and you do have complete titling control. But there's more to MEP than being just a beefier copy of iMovie, much more.

Say you want to pull off the effect from the beginning of Saving Private Ryan/ Gladiator. You remember that extra violent fog-o-war feeling. You can't do it with iMovie, it's just not possible out of the box. It's no big trick with MEP. To be honest there's not a lot you can't do to video footage with MEP. You can do titles any way you wish, move the audio around, add a single frame or a thousand, paint. Paint? Did I say paint, let's look back... It appears I did say paint. Well that's okay because you can paint directly on your video using the painting tools. It's a more useful feature than you might think. This might have you wondering "If I can paint, does this mean I can apply other image editing techniques to my movie?" Wonder no longer, the answer is yes. You want to mask the video? No problem. You want to apply an effect to just a region of the movie (you know a specific selected area)? Again no problem. Think of it, you can add cool effects to just, say, half the visible video. People familiar with imaging editing programs will be able to go nutso crazy with the included tools and mere mortals like I can still have a pants load of fun.

How powerful is MEP? I don't know. I know it can handle anything I can throw at it but I only have limited video editing experience. Could a super slick director take MEP to it's limits? I would bet the answer is yes. At least I think they could, you see MEP also includes brush editor to make your own brushes. These aren't just static brushes, these are special cool movie brushes. Even more intriguingly MEP includes something called RBscript. This is well beyond my ability to use but I suspect that in the right hands it could be a very powerful tool. With the ability to script stuff I conclude that MEP is limited more by the user than the program.

The last question to ponder: what do I give up if I ditch iMove and start using MEP? Well, MEP does everything iMovie does as well as plenty of other neat stuff I haven't mentioned (for example: you can set the dimensions of the movie). MEP offers a great deal of creative control and for those of you who don't want to shell for Final Cut Express but need more than iMovie this is the best alternative I've run across. MEP is very powerful, very original and very very cool. In addition to all the aforementioned goodness MEP includes a printed manual (becoming a rarity, but helpful with a program as original as MEP) and a very cool sticker.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use! Nothing I've ever seen
This software is the greatest. I can edit frame by frame or edit entire movies. I love the paint on movie feature--great for rotoscoping! Like I said before, it is nothing I've seen before. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Capably hosted by respected session guitarist and veteran instructor Ross Bolton, Voyetra Turtle Beach's Teach Me Guitar Deluxe won't teach you how to solo like Carlos Santana. The program instead distills the most important elements of beginning and intermediate rock guitar into bite-size bits that promote extensive hands-on practice and self-discovery. Like a Reader's Digest Condensed Book, it smartly conveys the flavor and styling of its subject matter without overwhelming the user, thus allowing aspiring players to begin the move from bumbling amateur to nimble-fingered virtuoso.

Starting with basic open chords and progressing sequentially through chord variations, power and movable chording, basic melody positioning, scales, picking techniques, and several standard blues and rock progressions, Teach Me Guitar Deluxe features 30-plus lessons amid a wide variety of compelling visual accompaniments. Students have access to such perks as animated fretboards, graphic fingering demonstrations, charts, and live-environment music videos featuring Bolton and his made-for-software band. While only four complete songs are offered, each is paired with an impressive tutorial that covers every note from the beginning of the introduction on through the verse, chorus, solo, and conclusion.

Fortunately, the program is designed to adapt to varying abilities. At any point during the proceedings, players may opt to loop and repeat a given passage, decrease or increase musical tempo without affecting the key, skip sections that seem too simplistic, or consult the enclosed chord dictionary booklet for more comprehensive fingering instructions. Teach Me Guitar Deluxe distinguishes itself from Voyetra's earlier Teach Me Guitar in several respects, the most notable of which is an electronic tuner that allows you to connect your axe to the computer's sound card for error-free digital setup. The package also includes a new audio-visual presentation of its printed chord dictionary, a hard-copy tablature pad, and a trio of guitar picks. Sadly, all three of the latter are equally thick and perhaps a bit too stiff for some.

Those who already know their basic chops and feel the need to move on to advanced soloing and phrasing are advised to check out Voyetra's more sophisticated Teach Me Rock Guitar or Teach Me Blues Guitar. Yet rookie and sophomore players wanting to supplement their learning curve with a grab bag of the essentials should find Teach Me Guitar Deluxe a helpful, enjoyable, and easily navigable instructional aid. --Gordon Goble ... 2-0 out of 5 stars All flash and no real learning!
I bought 2 CDROMs from this company, piano for my kid and guitar for myself. Neither does a very good job of teaching. This one is by far the worse of the two. My biggest problem is the lessons are very scattered. You are expected to go from point A to point D, skipping B and C. The playback on the songs isn't very flattering, as it is MIDI with no real guitar sounds. The instructor is straight out of the eighties with his big hair, so if anything I got a good laugh. ... Amazon.com Review

While there are plenty of at-home music-making programs to choose from these days, Magix Techno Music Maker has all the features and functions necessary for making your own videos to accompany your music.

The package is broadly aimed at beginners and experts alike. For those who are novices at digital home recording, the integral Song Wizard is constantly on hand to help you through the process. With a little nudge, the Song Wizard will show you how to use your mouse to select your musical instruments, to decide the length of a song, and to create and modify sounds and samples that will eventually go in the mix. Echo, reverb, timestretch, and pitchshift features are also available at the touch of a finger. The truly clever part comes when you press the Video button: a number of modules will appear, with small preview thumbnails to show what you're getting. Choose one of these and figures dance, screens go wild, and landscapes and cartoon characters do your most whimsical bidding. It's kind of like being Steven Spielberg without all the effort. Or money.

Extras include a rather splendid retro-style techno synthesizer, a similarly sassy hip-hop synth, a mixer, a copy function, and a kaleidoscope. And, when you're finally done with your Quincy Jones impression you can send your proud production to a friend via e-mail, or, remarkably, post it on the Magix Web site. --Sean Thomas ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars They must know something
Look... If you need software to CREATE music but have no skills with music production, instruments or stuff then this is your tool. It's easy, it's fun and it's cheap, I'm 16 and on a parental buget so cheap is good. Loop based music arrangements like that old Sonic Foundry Acid program but cheaper and easier. I can use mp3 files, CD files, MIDI files and even video. I can even create a website with the software. Created a song in under 5 minutes, I added video later and I can't say enough about it.

I am hooked... this almost makes it to easy.

The only thing that is lame is that the mp3 encoder is extra. no biggie. I say if your into music you need this program.

3-0 out of 5 stars read the insructions and clear your memory ...!!!!!!
If you are crashing....Music Maker Deluxe is my secret weapon, Music Maker Deluxe 2004 (MMD 2004) coupled with 2 other programs I currently use, are proving to be a winning combination for me. Those who have listened to the beats I am pounding out using MMD 2004 are astonished by the layered arrangements and effects this program gave me. Anyone out there who builds beats from scratch and limits their sampling would be impressed with this application. The virtual instruments are cool......bottom line!!!! Even the sampling savy "beat pirates" out there would enjoy this program. It works on my vaio buddy.....LOL The people that will have problems with this program don't read instructions and have too much porn saved to their hard-drive!!!!!!! I'm out

1-0 out of 5 stars This was a huge no no
This is not only (much like music maker generation 7) highly unstable but pretty useless on both my of my Sony Vaios (Computer Brand). Do not waste your money on this program it was a great disapointment because the crash ratio was higher them the running time.Even after cleaning my memory (as stated in the instructions)it crashed just as bad on both my Pentium 4 and my Athlon. Not only did it crash alot but the program effects broads, such as the guitar effects, need to be updated or done away with. They constintly errored out and most effects that was advertised on the box just plain out did not work. Stick with Sonic Foundry or final cut 4 both are alot better programs to work with.

1-0 out of 5 stars I do better using built-in Win apps and CD Burn software
I do better using the built-in Windows multimedia applications and the 'Nero' burner and wave editing software that was bundled with my CD burner. This was the MOST disappointing purchase I have ever made in my life. Nothing on the box even HINTS at the license agreement restrictions, which requires you to upgrade to a 'pro' (or 'royalty free') product if you don't want to include something similar to 'Created via MAGIX' in anything you publish, even the FREE stuff (either that or violate the license agreement), regardless of whether or not you use any of the samples. Further, I couldn't even load a simple MIDI file without the application CHANGING THE TEMPO and as well as all of the patch information in the process. So after converting the MIDI file to '.wav' format (using the windows application 'sndrec32' and the media player, like I usually do) I then added this track as #1, and started trying to add extra tracks, only to find out that the ONE feature that would have made this valuable was missing: NO 'per channel' graphic equalizers! And the "tone control" (not even a graphic EQ) had only 3 levels for bass, mid and treble! Even the free software that came with my CD Burner (namely, Nero Wave Editor) has a multi-band graphic EQ in it (and you can even change the frequencies for each band). So much for "effects". I was completely dissatisfied. I immediately uninstalled it and looked on the box for "money back guarantee" so I could return it. And you know what? There's no money back guarantee. (...).

1-0 out of 5 stars If you already have version 7, DON'T GET THIS
I am a frequent user of Music Maker 7 Deluxe, and it is better on so many levels than this its insane. I was very stoked to buy this product when I heard it had guitar modelling and all the great features in 7 enhanced. BUT, I bought it and realized they took out some of my favorite drum sounds, which worked the best for rock (I am a drummer who likes to make rock music in MM). In addition, there are tons of bugs, crashes, and other annoyances to worry about. The guitar modelling is difficult to use and doesn't really sound like guitar (although its better than what you had before.) The interface is also worse than before. I am very disappointed and pray to god that a patch comes out so my 60 bucks isn't wasted. I will do all my music making in version 7, and maybe use 2004 dlux as a 60-dollar compressor. I'm very ticked right now. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Voyetra's Teach Me Piano is an excellent choice for the beginning or intermediate piano student. With a slick, intuitive, and highly graphical interface and several dozen musically intelligent piano lessons, this CD-ROM makes it fun and easy to learn music with any MIDI-compatible keyboard or piano. A standout feature here is the highly effective interface, which sports a visual music room with the piano--and uses piano keys themselves to reach major program features. (Younger users should be able to learn to click on the right objects to get going.)The heart of this title features over 60 lessons, including the fundamentals of reading music and solid, beginning piano technique. You'll learn basic fingerings, scales, intervals, and the essentials of music notation. A library of some 75 songs--including traditional and folk tunes, with plenty of short classical pieces in a good range of difficulty--gives you something to practice. The best thing about the instruction has to be the videos that illustrate proper pianistic technique. A piano expert shows you all the correct positions and fingerings in real-time and full-motion video with sound. It's just the sort of thing that can lead to good habits for new players. As you go forward in the lessons here, you'll master playing in musical keys with up to three sharps or flats. The songbook feature breaks out your library of tunes, which you can work on separately outside of the lesson format. You can search for pieces by genre, composer, and level of difficulty.

With its focus on teaching piano from the ground up along with "real" music notation, this CD-ROM title will be a winner with any aspiring music student who's serious about learning the piano. Teach Me Piano has visual polish and plenty of musical expertise to offer anyone, whatever your age. --Rich Dragan ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Teach Me Piano
Having just purchased a used piano for my daughter, I decided to attempt to learn it also. At the age of 35, I didn't want to take beginning piano lessons so I purchased the above software, Teach Me Piano. When you consider the average cost of weekly piano lessons, this software really does pay for itself after a few lessons. I found it easy to use, however I would strongly recommend you only buy it if you have your computer relatively close to the piano in question. Laptop which you could sit on the piano would be preferable. The interactive portion of the lesson really requires a good quality microphone. You must be self-motivated to get anything out of this.

Obviously, installation woes. I expect it to be very buggy, it looks like it's made with some kind of demo-making SW rather than coded from scratch. Could not get it to work under Windows XP on an AMD setup (Athlon XP/Asus MB/Audigy), works fine so far under Windows XP on a P4 setup (Dell 8300 w/SB5.1). Looks like, as of 2004, most of the Piano Teaching SW programs out there that use a MIDI KB are obsolete, there's this one, Piano Suite, and eMedia Piano & Keyboard left? Those are both twice as expensive. Can somebody compare them? I see that the Piano Suite people are suppressing some bad reviews with their lawyers and it might be as old as this one (XP isn't mentioned in the OS list), and I see that the emedia one is the same company as a very well reviewed guitar program and is brand spanking new and modern (mentions OSX 10.2 in the mac version and XP for PC), but I haven't seen many reviews.
The consensus so far is, it works best on older OSs (98se ets.) might not work at all under XP or 2000 depending on your setup, and when it works, is pretty good. You know what? I'm gonna get the emedia one too and compare sometime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory piano lessons
I am in my mid thirties and I had never played a musical instrument in my entire life. Two weeks after installing the software I am well on my way to playing my first complete song by devoting about 45 minutes every day to the lessons. Great software, and it does work fine on Windows XP and the MIDI interface of a Sound Blaster card.

4-0 out of 5 stars Learning all over again
My husband took piano lessons when he was a kid - his mother made him. Sound familiar? Out of nowhere he starts talking about learning again so he purchases these cd's. He's really excited and is literally on the computer every night listening to the cd's and playing his portable piano. Okay, so how many times do I have to listen to 'The Entertainer' ring through the house (sigh)??? Well, he's actually gotten very good at playing, and he's moved on to some other songs (thank goodness!). My husband is not one who reads a lot so the cd's really are great. I would recommend this to anyone who would like to learn the piano all over again!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not compatible with Windows XP
Beware!! You cant use this program if you have or upgrade to Windows XP! Voyettra website states that ther is no patch or download available. But, they do recommend spending the extra 29.00 to upgrade to the "Deluxe" version so that you can use it in XP. This is from their website... "If you're using Windows XP we would recommend upgrading to "Teach Me Piano Deluxe" on our website:" Very poor customer support. I guess Ill be buying software from another company from now on. ...
