5-0 out of 5 stars A graduate level course on Wagner's "Ring"
When I was a graduate student in college, I took a two-semester course on the operas of Richard Wagner: the first semester was on his "other" operas and the second was on "Der Ring des Nibelungen". The second semester was spent in Germany, where we attended a performance of the complete "Ring" at Bayreuth (glorious!). Finding a copy of this Ring Disc ... was a real treasure (I must have bought the last one available, unfortunately, as it now available only as a used CD). This program really allows me to dig into the Ring once again, after so many years. It's a shame that the audio quality isn't any better, but 14.5 hours on one CDR is still remarkable. I recently purchased the new DVD set of the Ring, with Pierre Boulez (That's another review entirely!), and find the Ring Disc a helpful supplement. It is a shame that it seems to POP, but at the original ... list price, no wonder.

If you can find a copy, all you Wagner fans, buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent way to enjoy the Ring -- Incredible value too!
This CD is amazing in that it presents the entire Ring Cycle -- all 14 hours or so -- in very acceptable (albeit mono) sound on a single computer disk. The recording used is the famous one George Solti made with the leading Wagners singers from the late 1950s and early 60s that is considered one of the best recordings of these works. The software side of the disk is great, in that you can instantly choose the opera you want to go to, along with act and scene within the act. You can follow the operas in three ways (simultaneously if you want) -- there is a piano score, the libretto, and (very nice) a part of the screen that lists the leitmotifs that are being played. You can readily move through any part of the opera with a scroll bar, and there are lots of hyperlinks that take you to musical examples and some (almost a 100) very nice short essays on the Ring and its characters. This really is a great piece of software if you are interested in the Ring, and is a good value at...the list price..., and a truly unbelievable value at the [price] Amazon is now asking for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource
This CD-Rom is the best guide I've come across in 18 years of studying the Ring music dramas. The highly compressed music (14.5 hours on 1 CD!) is recorded in mono, but still sounds okay. The CD plays on my Windows 98 PC with no installation, no technical hassles at all. There are numerous hyperlinks so you can go to any section of the 4 operas in one click. Most impressive of all is the thorough cataloging of the leitmotifs. The commentary here is especially inciteful, illustrating how leitmotifs are developed and related to other leitmotifs, musically and dramatically. The explanation of the "love-curse" motif (usually mislabled the "renunciation motif) is particularly good.
I can't recommend this highly enough. (...)

5-0 out of 5 stars Hooray, I wish I could have bought this 10 years ago
The sound quality on this issue is pretty similar to that ofthe CDs, given that both are digitally remastered from original analogtapes. It would be well worth investing in higher quality computer speakers to take full advantage of the fine audio quality of this release. I have seen this package offered for sale only once outside of, and as I recall the retailer was asking a great deal more. The additional features of this issue make it very valuable for music study, the piano scores bought separately cost a fair sum. It is also very helpful to have the leitmotives (or as Wagner called them, Gedachnismotiven, meaning motives of memory) almost musically dissectable from the scores. All in all, this is one of the most attractive options available of acquiring the complete Ring. The Solti is not my favourite cycle, either as a whole or in part, but at this price, with all the extra features and conveniences, it would be very hard to give this set anything less than a full recommendation. Those who have already invested in other versions of this cycle on CD, including Solti's very popular recording, should not be too concerned about the costs of duplication. The extra and unique features of this issue make it well worth the outlay.

5-0 out of 5 stars A technological triumph!
If this disc is ever reissued, grab it! It is not an audio CD as described by Amazon. It is a CD-ROM with the entire Solti Ring in one disc (computer sound, of course). On video you get the score (piano reduction), the text, an English translation, and commentary. All the leitmotivs are marked, and you can stop anywhere and get all the instances of a leitmotivs, from first to last, and go to any point and hear any that you want. When they showed it to Solti, he was just amazed how much is on this one disc. (Issued with his approval.) This disc is hugely helpful if you want to get under the skin of the Ring and really get to know it. ... Read more

The word innovative can often be a hackneyed term to describeeye-catching software design. But in the case of eMedia's Blues Guitar Legends, the word is truly apt. The rock cognoscenti here at's music-softwareevaluation division are really starting to love eMedia's guitar instructionseries. Quite simply, we've seen nothing like their products before, andapparently we're in the majority, judging by the popularity of the Seattle-basedcompany's other titles, like Guitar Methods 1 and 2.

For those who want to learn blues-style guitar playing--which should be anyguitarist interested in the roots of pop music--you can do no better than BluesGuitar Legends Vol. 1. Picture buying an audio CD of 10 of the greatest bluessongs of all time, but instead of getting just the songs on disk, you alsoreceive a comprehensive, visually rich system for learning those songs. Throw incommon information about guitar tuning, song notation, and biographical data onthe artists, and you've got eMedia's Blues Guitar Legends.

Upon launching the program, a content window pops up with pictures of nine bluesartists--including Muddy Waters, B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, and Stevie RayVaughn--and one band, the Allman Brothers. Roll your mouse over the picture andhear a quick sample of a song, one of many little details we love about thisprogram. If you're just starting out, you can click on the Intro icon to get anoverview of the software, its icons, and their functions. Learn fingerpositions, how to read chord charts, and how to tune your guitar using thebuilt-in tuner. Go back to the content window and click on an artist to launch asong. Have your guitar ready, because now the fun begins.

As the song is playing, you'll view the heart of eMedia's system--the animatedfretboard--and the notation window containing the musical score of the guitarparts in the song. The animated fretboard is simply one of the coolest featuresyou'll find in instruction software. It's a top-down view of a guitar neck, withchord and finger patterns that change, or play, as the song plays. You canactually watch how the fingers slide, bend the string, and use vibrato. B.B.King's trademark butterfly tremolo technique is dutifully re-created, as is DuaneAllman's legendary slide style.

You can slow down the tempo of the song, loop sections, change between lead andchord parts, record yourself playing, and even sing along to the lyrics if youwant. Practically the only thing you can'tdo is stop to ask Muddy Waters a question, but with this software, you won'thave to. You'll be speaking his language soon enough.

Most of all, you'll have a lot of fun with Blues Guitar Legends. And you justmight spare yourself years of a hard-living, freight-train-catching bluesman'slifestyle. --John Bosch ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing!
There is simply no better way to learn these songs. You can isolate different sections of the music and loop them over and over (both the audio and the tab/notation). You can even slow it down. The animated fretboard is also very cool. It plays the notes in time with the music. It even bends the notes. I only wish they'd make more.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor user interface, technical problems
I spent about an hour getting this to work correctly. I am disappointed with the interface and the lack of lesson information. Not a bad product but there are better guitar programs for sure

4-0 out of 5 stars Great fun but not for beginners
This is a wonderful CDRom. The songs are mighty enjoyable, and eMedia lets you see exactly how the blues greats created the toe-tapping music that they did. But be warned: learning to play these songs using the eMedia system isn't for rank beginners. I'm a classical guitar player with over a decade of playing experience, and I had to slow the songs to less than half their speed to even have a fighting chance of keeping up. You're expected to already know some blues techniques and have some accessories (e.g. a glass slide). Eventually, I know I'll get the hang of these songs and have a great time. But it's gonna take practice, practice, practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Play blues like a pro
I picked up Blues Guitar Legend because of the great songs by Stevie Ray Vaughan and BB King. When I saw the animated fretboard I was blow away. Bends, slide and vibroto make this feature very cool. The multi speed option made learning the songs very easy. I highly recomend picking this one up. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good except for one obnoxious thing...
I bought this from EBay in January 2004, and from what I see today Amazon is offering an excellent price.

On first appearance, this software looks to be complciated to learn. The thing is, they packed it with more features than I personally would ever need. If you have the patience, you can really get some neat things out of the software. I played around with it, but eventually discarded the manual and started using it just like my old tape-drive 4-track recorder. Build-in metronome? Cool. Don't need it. Built-in effects? Might use it someday. Not today. So - you can get off the ground with the basic pretty quickly. One really neat thing is graphicly selecting regions that you want to punch in before hitting record. All in all, really good.

There are a couple of clunky thing about it that you can work around easily - if you try to record a track before selecting an input device, for example, that track isn't going to work again (so just deleted it and make a new one). Double-clicking a Cakewalk file from file explorer results in an error, so bring up the application first, then load the file. I haven't run into any really drastic bugs, but makes me wonder when I will.

Okay - my big beef - you have to pay extra to enable mixing down to MP3. I personally find it very obnoxious to buy a fully-featured, production piece of software - and then they want MORE MONEY - $30 - to enable what should be a standard feature. You can mix down to plenty of formats, sure, but let's face it, you'd expect MP3 to be a pretty standard format to use. I feel cheated and not respected as a customer of the product when the developers resort to this kind of money-grubbing.

Well, I was going to give 2 starts because of the MP3 thing, but to be fair, overall this is a really nice piece of software, so it deserves a balanced review. Happy recording!

2-0 out of 5 stars Powerful but hard
I bought the program, so that I could be able to record MIDI. I have an Casio WK-1800 keyboard, which I thought to connect to my computer. I connected the keyboard with a Yamaha UX-16 Midi in/Midi out to USB connector. I have gone through zillions of e-mails with support, and they don't seem to be able to make it work.

Otherwise, the program is a powerful workhorse, only if you spend hours and hours of figuring everything out. As an first-timer, I don't recommend this product. But as an professional, go for it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good value - if you have the patience
I bought this as a home recording novice. Whereas my prior home recording experience was limited to a microphone and an office tape recorder, my knowledge of desktop computers and how they operate is extensive. Novices be aware that Cakewalk has a steep learning curve with regard to troubleshooting. Don't expect to install and be recording right away. This is a very complex program and it seems the possibilities for conflicts with other software on the computer is endless. I can't imagine having to wrestle with this beast not having the computer knowledge that I have. For example, to avoid dropouts I have to set my soundcard and Cakewalk audio mode to ASIO. It will not record in the standard MME mode and to this day I have no idea why and have explored every possible soundcard conflict to no avail.

That being said - if you are up to a couple weeks of trying to defeat the beast, Cakewalk does provide a tool for you to make pro-quality digital recordings at a bargain price. You have unlimited tracks for audio and MIDI instruments. I only use the audio tracks to record guitar and bass compositions. The drum machine included in the software is kind of weak so I recommend getting a CD of professional drum loops. With a good drum loop I can record a bass line, rythm guitar track, and lead guitar track with sound quality that match any store-bought CD I own.

The options to tweak your sound are practically infinite. So you are limited only by time and your imagination.

If you think it will be too much of a hassle, I understand. Otherwise, if you have the courage and determination, you will eventually reap the rewards.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Jury is Still Out
After an apparently successful installation, the "Wave Profiler," module repeatedly crashed my machine. Installation of the patch offered by Cakewalk did not seem to be of any help.

At present, I am able to record MIDI. Due to the aforementioned problem with wave profiler, however, I am unable to record instruments through mic/line input.

I believe this software does have potential. Hopefully I will be able to realize it in the near future. This reveiew will be updated accordingly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cakewalk Home Studio just keep getting better and better!
Cakewalk products just keep getting better and better. Possibly the best all-around home studio recording software packages in it's (low!) price range. Cakewalk Home Studio 2004 includes a whole whack of goodies, including some very serious new tools for musicians. The best part is that Home Studio is nice and easy to use.

If you're a musician stepping into the world of digital recording, Cakewalk Home Studio gently eases you into a creative recording environment, providing you with everything you need to turn your computer into a powerful multitrack recording studio.

With lots of pro level features not found in most other recording software packages, Home Studio 2004 records up to 24-bit / 96 kHz audio and is designed to let you focus on the creative process of making music.

Home Studio also includes the great sounding EDIROL Virtual Sound Canvas DXi. With over 990 sounds and drum sets, this little 'extra' is actually a HUGE bonus with the software.

One of Home Studio's many pro-level features is support for multi-channel audio cards. This is great if you want to record more than one instrument or audio track at once - perfect for recording live bands with each musician recorded to a separate track.

Want to create some killer drum tracks? It's easy to 'paint' drum tracks with the simple 'click and drag' feature. You can record unlimited audio and MIDI tracks, mix with real-time audio and MIDI effects, and then burn your masterpiece to CD with Pyro Express CD maker and WAV ripper. Home Studio 2004 supports ACID-format, MP3, WAV, WMA and MIDI files.

For anyone wanting to enter the magical world of digital recording, this product is truly an excellent choice... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent software
I have used 4 different brands of video editing software around this price point. Pinnacle Studio 9 is the winner in most regards. I'd give Microsoft's movie maker a highly defeatured second place for being very easy to use but far less functional.

Pros of Studio:
- Very flexible
- High quality output
- Version 9 has been completely stable (hardware incompatibilities can cause problems though, as other reviews show, so check if you're compatible -- if you're not, the crashes are a royal pain as I've seen with other video software)
- Burn straight to DVD
- Create DVD scenes in your movie very easily
- Merges in photos effectively
- fades, wipes, effects are outstanding

- Limited number of tracks for audio/video -- (as with all sw at this pricepoint)
- No pans and fades for photos, only transitions
- No support for WMV format, which is much more compressed but lower quality

Overall, you can VERY easily go from your DV tape into Pinnacle, and then edit/cut/fade add music, etc, then burn to DVD with very professional results. The UI is intuitive and the results are great.

If you're interested in slightly simpler work and don't need great flexibility, the Microsoft movie maker (free with XP) is actually quite good too. As of my last use you can't burn to DVD though so need added software for that.

4-0 out of 5 stars Much Improved over Studio 8
Pinnacle Studio 9 is a vast improvement over previous versions There are a lot of nice features and its ease of use is currently unmatched. It is more stable and faster than ever before.

Studio 9 is easy to install. Basically, put in the requested disks, wait and you are done. Some systems may need to reboot afterwards but after that, you are ready to roll.

Capturing, editing and rendering are all simple to do and you can have a lot of fun doing so. Making cuts and edits were surprisingly simple and the effects that you can add are truly impressive. Rendering is still slow but it seem about 25% faster than Studio 7 or 8. An hour of video rendered for DVD took nearly 5.5 hours to render. That may be kind of slow compared to higher end systems but if you have the time, it is worth it. The end product looks very nice.

I capture with Pinnacles' AV/DV PCI card. It does a good job but if I capture video recorded on slower tape speeds, I sometimes have audio sync issues and I have yet to find out if it is the card or the software.

Pinnacle's support is fair but featues a great, mostly user supported, webboard. However, you may be scared from purchasing this software because of all of the issues people have.

This is a great program with a lot of good features and special effects. You will need to make sure you turn off all of those "cute" programs like screen savers, mouse enhancements, backgrounds and other memory resident programs to make sure you do not crash. You will be quite surprised as the stability of this version compared to past versions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best editor out there
Pinnacle has a winner here!!!!!! A full feature set of tools for the novice to the pro at your disposal. Starting with SMARTMOVIE: 3 step movie making, to the ability to color correct old distorted footage. This is a must have for anyone who is thinking about turning their Home Video's into memories they can cherish forever. Thanks Pinnacle!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars 9.12 has been rock solid
I will admit that when I bought this program as an upgrade to Studio 7 I was looking for DVD authoring mainly and disappointed by the crash crash crash of the interface even when patched to 9.08. The version in the box by the way was 9.04. I waited patiently (only 3 weeks) and then pinnacle came out with the update to take the product to 9.12. Since I've patched to 9.12 I have had no issues with Studio 9. It works as advertised. I mainly use it to make instructional video's, the two to five minute variety and it works nicely. Personally I'm thinking of upgrading to Liquid Edition 5.5. I think with the currently patched software, Studio 9 will not dissapoint 80 - 85% of the DV home user market. Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ignore the rest, buy it and patch it
patch 9.1.2

I have been a long time user of Pinnacle and they have had problems with the early version of their programs but I just purchased v.9 and patched it. Version 9 blows away version 8. Its MUCH faster and renders much faster. I bought the Porsche Fire wire device with it to do my old analog Hi-8 tapes. I have now completed several 2 hour videos and burned them to DVD with absolutely no problem. The program is GREAT. I can do anything I want to the video and it has not crashed yet (unlike V8). All of the problems of 8 are gone, no mismatching sound. It seems much faster. It only took me 7 hours to render and burn the 2 hour video (25 gig avi). Buy it and patch it. It really is a great program. It runs on my system which has a raid 0 setup on WD 8 meg ATA 100 driver. I have 1 gig of DDR PC 3200 ram and P P4 2.6MHZ 800 with htt. My video is a NVidea 5700 Ultra 128 mb. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great if you can get it to work...
I started with Studio DV (v 1.0?), after much tweaking was able to import DV, but not export DV to camcorder. Found out on the excellent Pinnacle support webboard (mostly disgruntled users) that my motherboard wasn't supported.. So after an upgrade I finally was able to get a project output to camcorder. Then I decided I wasn't going to hassle with it until DVD R technology was available.
Got a DVD+R/RW, and decided to purchase Studio 8 despite reading the webboard ... Was able to import and edit right away--very easy interface. Then the trouble, wasn't able to render. Decided to upgrade to Windows XP (from 98SE) and NTFS file system. Reinstalled (with 8.5.2 upgrade patch) and project rendered fine first try. Then burned to disc image--great! Then burned to DVD+R--great! Then tried to watch it--first menu popped up--I was in tears of joy! Then tried to move through the menu---"DISK UNPLAYABLE"... UGH.
There are scads of hints and tips and suggestions from other users on the support webboard to fix this and other issues (now I can't render), but the software is unstable and not ready for general consumer use. I may just use it for editing and output MPEG2/AVI, then find another program for DVD authoring. Bottom line is I've been trying to create a project for 4 months and all I have to show is a coaster and [money spent on] computer upgrades. I'm convinced Pinnacle is a front for the PC industry to drive upgrades...

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of features and easy to use
I had never used video editing software before, and read a lot of reviews, both user and "expert" before settling for Pinnacle Studio Version 8.
Curiously, the 10 digit serial number was printed backwards and it took a while to figure that out. Also it was on the CD sleeve, not on the back of the book where the on screen instructions told me to locate it.
After installing (a breeze) I watched the tutorial video and then made a couple of test movies. One on fresh video footage from my Samsung mini DV camcorder, the other was a compilation of AVI video clips my folks back in Old England have e-mailed to me and I have been saving them on my hard drive.
Both movies were easy to compile and fun to do. I easily added transition effects between scenes and titles, trimmed some scenes and then rendered the whole thing. I found rendering was slow, as many other reviewers have pointed out, but that was my only complaint.
I made one test movie on a CD using MPEG2 which played fine on my DVD player. The other was a compilation of 20 and 30 second AVI movie clips, which was also very easy to put together and played perfectly on my (older) DVD player. Movies can also be made in streaming fashion to display on a web site or in formats suitable for e-mailing. The many formats available is definitley one of its strong points.
This software was pretty easy to use, with nice features allowing a complete amateur like me to impress the hell out of my friends at first try!
I accomplished all of this without any prior experience with video editing software so I give my full approval.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pinnacle 8 RUINED MY LIFE.
First of all. Are you wondering if you should buy Pinnacle (8 or 9, the same thing)? Are you looking for a functional or at least friendly editing software? I can give you the answer!

Pinnacle made me cry, and I'm not joking or exagerating. It made me cry, when I lost my 43-min project when I'd just reached half of it... Also when I was doing the final render, and WITHOUT MY PERMISSION it'd just change the audio tracks, turn one song into another, repeat video files I didn't even include (sometimes I was just wating for it to include video files I hadn't even captured!), it goes wacko, crazy, mad,'s frustrating. Not to mention all those times where I just layed too much of my trust on it, didn't saved every single thing I did and it'd just crash and end itself.

Why oh why, did I EVER thouhgt of buying this? Please listen to me, listen to us all and don't make the same mistake we did. DIE PINNACLE.

1-0 out of 5 stars Would be good if it worked!
The good: Pinnacle Studio is packed with features and is quite easy to use.
The bad: It's JUNK. Full of bugs even with the latest updates. It's slow too. STAY AWAY from this product!
Version 9 is even worse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pinnacle Studio 8 Rocks!
Despite of all the other bad reviews Pinnacle Studio 8 is a fine product. I got the same advise from a DVD Support site. They advised me that Studio 8 can work with their DVD burners but only if I can make the application work. Good luck! I guess i am lucky because with Studio 8 my DVD movies are of superior quality to those other video programs such as Sonic My DVD or Sony MovieShaker. Also, Studio 8 is a more complete application because enables me to edit sound as MP3 files from Real One Player together in my videos. Therefore, Studio 8 offers a more integral interface with a sexy touch for the digital video lover. I am happy with Studio 8! ... Read more
