Amazon.com Review

Voice recognition software often conjures up images of StarTrek or 2001: A Space Odyssey, in which characters holdin-depth conversations and accomplish great tasks with their computers. DragonNaturallySpeaking 5.0 Preferred Edition takes talking to your computer out ofthose science fiction movies and into the world of everyday use. While recentversions of speech-to-text software have resulted in mistake-ridden documentsand overpriced products, NaturallySpeaking 5.0 offers the ability to createwell-written and edited documents, send e-mail, and surf the Web.

In addition to better accuracy, other improvements include the "training period"and vocabularies for teen, adult, and advanced users. After you have chosen theapplicable vocabulary, this training period gives the computer time to get toknow your voice patterns. Instead of a 45-minute training session (as in the 4.0version of this product), NaturallySpeaking 5.0 thankfully only requires up to10 minutes of preparation. The program even offers dictation pointers for thoseof us who enunciate poorly.

One obvious advantage to voice recognition technology is that your hands arefree to hold the telephone or twirl your hair while you dictate. For example, this review actually was written with the program and not with the keyboard--afeat that previously was impossible. The only problem was found when loud noisesoccurred during use (make sure to keep your kids or noisy officemates out of theroom).

While NaturallySpeaking 5.0 is not perfect, it is a vast improvement overearlier versions, as well as its competitors. So, while you can't tell yourcomputer to take out the trash, you can have it write your documents hands-free.Now, if only they would invent the transporter. --Madeleine J. Miller ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good product, requires a fast computer
Pros:
- for the most part, very accurate (for me the accuracy is about 90% initially, but the mistakes are usually close to the words I say)
- allows me to get my ideas down quickly
- Fun
- Improves speaking and thinking skills considerably

Cons:
-With my 300mHz processor/190megs RAM, I can only run a few applications with this program without the VR speed/accuracy decreasing considerably
-If I have the program running too long, the accuracy decreases
- Integration with MSWord is a little questionable; when you use the "correct that" command in MSWord to edit a block of text, sometimes it recognizes your command as "correct "that"" - in other words, understanding how commands function takes getting used to

Overall I am quite satisfied. The program takes getting used to, but when my hand problems make typing difficult for me, it makes an excellent substitute, and I know several people who type exclusively using this program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dragon is the Best on the Market
I have used Dragon Version 2.0 throughout my graduate studies and in my practice for several years now to write research papers, client reports, and articles for publishing. I found that my writing style was more conversational and easier for readers to follow when I dictate. Because of my academic training and practice, I found that my manual typing style was highly accurate and technically correct, but perhaps too much so. I lost a lot of my authorship personality in manual typing.

I have tried every voice recognition software available for consumers and Dragon is the best by far. Dragon performs better if you use a good microphone and headset and if you go through the audio setup wizard every time you use it. The wizard only takes seconds, but it improves the audio recognition function. Your voice is a little different in tone or volume on different days, and I have a suspicion that the computer resets the audio settings every time you reboot. It also performs best on faster computers. I have it loaded on my desktop and laptop and it only took 15-20 minutes to train at first.

Accuracy gets better the more you use it. The nice thing about Dragon is that you can train it on a new word and your pronunciation once, and it gets it down the first time. I tried out the other major software on the market and it took sometimes many tries to get it to correct a problem, and sometimes it never did.

The only headache I have had is that I just upgraded to a faster computer with Windows 2000 and it will not support anything less than Dragon Preferred Version 5.0. The manufacturer is having a hard time keeping up with demand. You can't get the new version in stores or on line, other than through Dragon direct. Amazon is even having a hard time getting it.

Happy dictating!

2-0 out of 5 stars Typing is faster
It does a fair job of recognizing simple text, but dictating an article out of, for example, the New York Times, stumps the program. Typing it, unfortunately, is much faster.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very buggy; works once you get it going.
I was very disappointed with the software product. Although the speech recognition capability was excellent, the program is wrought with bugs and is difficult to get started. In less you are using this application to work with Microsoft Word, you may have a difficult time.

I was especially disappointed to find out how long it takes to get started once you actually start to software. For example, when you click the mike on, sometimes it would be almost a full minute before the program would start to understand your speech. Sometimes I had to turn the microphone off and on a couple of times.

The software fascinates me and does impress me to a certain degree. It is truly amazing technology. However, there is much to be desired in terms of usability. I paid a lot of money for this software, and I expect it to conform to a certain standard.

I am going to try IBM ViaVoice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Good but the new version 7.0 is much better
The Dragon 5.0 is good but the new 7.0 version is EXCELLENT and is the way to go if you want to optimize your money.Dragon 7.0 is very accurate and has more speech capabilites. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good product
IBM hits the mark with this product. They also, somewhat amazingly, avoid most of the usual IBM mistakes. Easy set-up allows quick use of the application. Documentation is pretty good - although there are areas where more in-depth info is desired. Also, there are some elements in which audio and visual clues appear but no documentation explains what they are or why they are there - typical IBM in that respect. The enclosed microphone is my only complaint - poor quality. I use a high end mic and have very few recognition errors as a result. Spend some extra dough and invest in a decent mic.

Overall - a good product. I'd recommend it to a friend.

2-0 out of 5 stars No good on NT or W2000!
Beware! This product won't work with Windows NT or W2000! It only works with W98 or Me. If you have W2000 you must buy the Professional edition ... which doesn't seem to have any real additional features, it just costs ... more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Software!
I recently purchased this new ViaVoice advanced 9 edition. My first ViaVoice was the personal 8 edition which was a very good voice recognition software for the money. I upgraded to this version to see what better applications it has to offer. I have been pleasantly surprised with this new version. I am able to talk directly into instant messengers such as yahoo, msn, aol and also able to talk directly into fields such as the one I am filling out right now. You talk, it types. It really does work and if you like to send instant messages or spend more time doing other things than typing, then get this software. You will enjoy it.

Also the installation process was very easy. For those of you that already have a ViaVoice software and want to upgrade, the software does all the work, you don't have to re-teach your voice model because it upgrades it automatically with the new software.

I hope this was helpful in making your decision.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast and accurate!!
I was impressed on how easy this software sets up!
Within an hour of training it with my voice it got very accurate. However there are some words it had difficulty to get them at first. You have to keep correcting it within the first days so it can be well trained. Great product! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars No problem with Windows Me.
I got this version specifically for Windows Me and I have not had any problems so far. As expected there was some training required but once that was out of the way it was smooth sailing. Navigating the web is a bit tricky but I'm still in the learning process. This is the second voice package I've had and it is a few GIANT steps above the first one. I wonder what the "Pro" is like?

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad for ME
I personally don't recommend this product for WME users.

For my 600MHz computer running Windows ME, IBM included a notice in the box claimed performance issues while running with WME, as well as that important "direct dictation" feature for works other than word processing (ie using Excel/Outlook/IE4) will cause crashes. This made it not worth the price, and the risk of losing data.

However, it works exceptionally well for 600MHz running Windows 98 including 2nd Edition, for that I will give 4 stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT Windows NT or 2000 compatable
I don't need the features of ViaVoice Pro but guess what? IBM forces you to buy the pro version if you are going to use it on Windows 2000 or NT.

IBM's marketing department stated that the only reason that they crippled ViaVoice Advanced so it doesn't work on NT or 2000 is because if your using one of those operating systems, then you must be a "Pro". Nice assumption. ... Read more

This is a wonderful product! We have used it in schools to support the writing of students who have difficulty translating ideas to paper. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great program, good performance
Although is not 100% acurate (about 89%) it is amazing to see how well this program works, and you don't need an incredibly powerful computer to run it (altough the faster, the better). You need little time to train the program to your voice (with the 10 minutes basic training, the full 60 minutes training is advised) and best of all, is not limited to one user, many different people can use the program, you just have to train it for the different persons. There's no interference with background noises when using the headset with microphone

The drawbacks:

Sometimes misses when you teach new command words and you have to try several times. It seems that you can't use a second language, which would have been great ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Voice Pilot 3.0 from Tech Depot.
I purchased Voice Pilot 3.0 here on Amazon.com, who sent the order to a company called Tech Depot, a division of Office Depot. When my order arrived, I opened the box to find a card game called "Colin's Classic Cards." A fine program I'm sure, but hardly what I ordered. I called their customer service line, and I was told that it was a "pick error." They issued an RMA for the return and said they would overnight me the correct software, which they did. But, it turned out to be another copy of "Colin's Classic Cards." So, again I called customer service, and again I was told that it was a "pick error." They issued an RMA for the second return and again said they would overnight me the correct software, which they did. But, it turned out to be another copy of "Colin's Classic Cards." Are you starting to see a pattern here? So this time, when I called customer service, I just asked for a refund, you know, three strikes and all. I wish I could have given a better review of Voice Pilot 3.0 but I've yet to see it. Hope this helps.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works Surprisingly Well
When I decided to try a voice recognition program, I first bought IBM ViaVoice 10. It would not launch on my PC - turns out that if you have any sort of firewall (or related utility) installed on your computer, it will interfere with ViaVoice 10, which uses the TCP/IP protocol. (Earlier versions of ViaVoice apparently don't have this problem.) After returning ViaVoice, I tried Dragon NaturallySpeaking v. 6 (Essentials), which I'd heard was actually superior to version 7. My expectations were low, but I was pleasantly surprised. After five minutes of training, I achieved reasonably good results. After an hour of training, results were excellent - especially when the program was used in conjunction with MS Word 2002, as opposed to DragonPad. Does Dragon make mistakes? Sure. But they are easily corrected, and in most cases not much worse than the typos you might make if you're a poor typist (like me). Besides, dictating to your PC is fun - and a welcome change from typing. The program also comes with a full-featured, printed instruction manual written in plain English by somebody with a sense of humor! This is a real rarity in these days of "online help" documents apparently translated from Japanese. I recommend this program to anyone who has the patience to train it, and a willingness to put up with some errors.

2-0 out of 5 stars Promise Not Yet Fulfilled
I purchased this product for my 9-year-old daughter to make it easier for her to get started on her creative writing. She went through the required voice recognition training program. Once she began to dictate, the computer wrote gibberish. I had her train the program some more; it still wrote gibberish. In case the problem was her child's voice or problems with her reading skills during the training process, I signed on as a new reader and tried to train the program to recognize my voice. It did better than it did with my daughter, but it still made a lot of errors. I suppose this product might work if you're willing to invest a significant amount of time on voice recognition training, but it requires more than we have the time and patience for. This is NOT an "open the box and get started right away" type of product.

By the way, it's advertised as being compatible with Windows ME, but it didn't work on my daughter's computer (even though it had the minimum system requirements). I had to load it onto my newer Windows XP machine.

Perhaps this program works for those who are willing to put in the time it takes to develop accuracy in voice recognition, but for now I consider the technology to be a promise that has yet to be fulfilled.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred 6 is better than 7!
I was a satisfied user of version 6 (preferred) and thought I would be even happier with version 7. Bix mistake! As far as I am concerned, version 6 (preferred) is excellent.

I made the mistake of assuming the version 7 would upgrade the existing version 6 on my computer. It didn't. It installed version 7 in a different directory. Worse yet, error messages appeared. Reinstalling the program did not help. Uninstalling version 6 was no longer possible after version 7 was installed. Manually removing version 6 did not help. Fortunately I had a backup of my harddrive. I was able to return to the way things were before. I then uninstalled version 6 and it did a clean install a version 7. That solved the error messages. However, other problems with the new software remain.

I would have thought that some attention would be paid to grammatical structure when it would automatically insert a period or a comma. It does not insert comma's or periods in a very consistent way. This makes this new feature essentially useless.

Aside from this, unlike version 6, version 7 has caused some instability in my XP home edition system, leading to repeated crashes while executing "select that" and "correct that" commands. Fortunately, with Windows XP, the computer reboots after a crash. But you lose information in the process. My computer crashed three times while trying to write this section with Dragon version 7. I am now typing instead of dictating.

When doing a "correct that" command, new bugs became evident. It sometimes inserts the correction for the highlighted phrase into the middle of a previous word in a sentence. When I paused, it sometimes did not leave a space between the previous word and the next phrase. So some words remained connected likethis. Very irritating!

It would have been nice if there had been clear directions how to transfer custom words from the dictionary of version 6 to version 7. Now I have lost all the work I put into version 6. I subsequently put in hours of work inserting special terms into version 7's dictionary. However, with all the new problems associated with version 7, unless I find a solution I think I will go back to version 6, necessitating new work again.

Moral of the story as far as I am concerned: stay with version 6 (which worked fine for me) unless you are capable of dealing with a lot of frustration and able to resolve quirky issues like the ones I have run into.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing and easy = Amazingly easy! :-)
5 days ago I opened the package at 5:00 p.m. By 6:00 p.m. the program & mike/headphone had been installed, I had begun to train the computer by reading several short paragraphs and, hands-free, I created a document in WordPerfect. This was before I opened the manual. Since then, using the program, I have opened and closed programs, saved files, chatted on Yahoo, read and sent email, surfed the net, modified web pages and created handouts.

Initially it takes time - since it is best to correct as you go - but the more I use it, fewer corrections need to be made.
Every time that I use the program it gets smarter about how I speak. The Quick Reference card is clear, fairly comprehensive and easy to understand.

I was recently diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome and was told that my use of the computer would have to be extremely limited for some time to come. After researching the various voice-recognitions programs available I chose this one because it appeared to be no-frill and was reasonably priced. I figured that it would be a good place to start and that I could upgrade or go to another program if this did not work out for me. I am looking no further. Though I haven't finished the manual yet, using the computer is almost completely hands-free. Now I can use the computer more than I did before! What more could a gal ask? Next week I am thinking of asking it if it can do my windows.

I highly recommend this program. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Unlike the Proversion, IBM ViaVoice 8.0 Standard Edition only runs on Windows 9x and WindowsMe. And, just like its rivals, ViaVoice is a snap to install. You'll need amoderately well-specified PC to get the best of it--a 300 MHz Pentium with 64 to96 MB of RAM is recommended, although more of either won't go amiss.

Plug in the headset, adjust the sound levels, and read out a script to trainViaVoice. This takes a mere five minutes or so--a far cry from when trainingtook anything up to one hour. More training is a good idea, but we experiencedexcellent recognition accuracies from the word "go"--when you read out reportsand business-style letters, you can expect to get as many as 96 words right outof 100, which is remarkable. Correcting mistakes remains a simple task, and ismade a lot easier by the playback of what you actually said.

You can dictate into any application, but Microsoft Word 2000/97 can becontrolled by using "natural language controls." With the mic active, you simplyutter "dictate to Word" to get going--Word then is loaded, and you can begindictation. New to this release is the ability to control Microsoft InternetExplorer in this way. ViaVoice 8.0 is modeless, which means that you can mixdictated speech and commands in the same breath. All you have to do is pauseslightly in your flow of words, and ViaVoice will know that your next word is acommand instead of text.

ViaVoice 8.0 Standard Edition differs from the Professional Edition in a few keyareas; but, for basic dictation purposes, the Standard Edition would satisfy thevast majority of users. --Roger Gann ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive Voice Recognition
I've ordered the Advanced so that I can get more control, but the voice recognition cannot be better. I can pass paragraphs without an error.

4-0 out of 5 stars New meaning to the phrase: "Talk it out!"
I purchased this to help me dictate some reports. I was up and running with ViaVoice 8.0 Standard in less than an hour. Training the computer to recognize your voice patterns can be done in as little as 15 minutes, but after continued use of the software, I recommend that you read all six training exercises that are presented during the setup phase of ViaVoice. I found that accuracy improves when the program has more of a voice model from which to extrapolate words.

The headset included with the program is very well made and extremely sensitive to speech. Connecting it was no problem for me, and I was given a choice of using my computer's external speakers or the headset speaker to hear my dictation. This is a useful feature as you can hear what you read back in your own voice (or you can use "Woodrow," the program's own synthesized voice).

Overall, I would say this product is a good value, and I would recommend it to those who are looking for a good beginning to voice recognition programs. ... Read more
