Amazon.com Review

It's easy to become paranoid about online security, so learn about the problems and protect yourself with software like McAfee Internet Security 4.0. The package includes two key PC protection tools: McAfee VirusScan and a firewall (to let you decide what information leaves and enters your PC). VirusScan will look for and remove viruses, repair or quarantine infections, and automatically download updates for a year; it also protects you against viruses that use your e-mail address book to spread. The firewall hides your computer from hackers while you're online and warns you when programs are sending or receiving data so you can allow the ones that should be connecting--like your Web browser--and block others--like viruses. While the firewall keeps you secure and lets you block or unblock specific IP addresses, configuring options for individual applications are numerous.

There's a built-in security check that tells you whether the settings you've picked for the McAfee tools and other applications like Internet Explorer are secure enough, as well as a host of other security tools (some more useful than others). The filtering tools for blocking offensive content when children are surfing are easy for a determined kid to circumvent and you shouldn't let the tools that claim to protect personal information make you careless about what you type in where. Much more useful are the options to block cookies and to keep your PC online while you're doing a long download. You can also encrypt private files and folders with File Guardian to protect them from hackers, or anyone else who uses your PC.

McAfee Internet Security has more features than the average Internet user may need, with a friendly interface and plenty of tools to keep you safe online. --Mary Branscombe, Amazon.co.uk ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars McAfee Internet Security 4
I bought this as a replacement for Norton Internet Security-what a mistake. First, if you can get it running, it is far from user friendly. Too many screens, too many redundant features. Secondly on my PC (running WIN 98SE), the upgrade feature refused to work. The installshield refused to run. I had an IM session with cutomer support (a somewaht "creepy" experience), and did what they said, which was to delete the installshield folder on my PC and download a new version from MSFT which I did, and it did not solve the problem. So, I have run out of time to mess with this product anymore and am going back to Norton (which had its own issues) but at least ran well and allowed me to upgrade.

1-0 out of 5 stars worst product I've ever seen
how can this be a product considering competing companies such as norton and zonealarm?

1-0 out of 5 stars Save yourself the headache... don't install this!
I bought McAfee internet security so that I could combine three programs (zonealarm, windows washer, Norton Anti-Virus) into one - what a mistake! First of all, it glitched during installation on my XP computer. Once installed, it caused major problems with Internet Explorer and Explorer. In fact, until I told the firewall to filter nothing (no protection) I couldn't even log onto the web. Then, it caused my computer to no longer accept keyboard entry in explorer and internet explorer. Finally, I uninstalled the whole thing and problems were solved, although it did leave behind at least one startup file problem.

Also, the manual doesn't list any tech support phone, only web support. Once you get to the web (after installing the software!)it only gives you a 900 number for tech support - there is ZERO free support!

I really didn't want to give my money to Symantec (Norton), but their anti-virus program works flawlessly. Do yourself a favor and do not buy or install this product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save yourself, stick with Norton.
McAfee Virus Protection I rate highly, although not as highly as Norton AntiVirus for the sole reason that it's interface isn't as clean and doesn't always let you know what it's doing.

Personal Firewall; a decent product but again pretty "cranky" with setup and configuration.

Internet Security piece of it; IN MY OPINION, ONE OF THE WORST PIECES OF SOFWARE EVER WRITTEN. I was working with a client who bought it and was having issues with it; I got all pieces working, upgraded to the latest and greatest Internet Security from McAfee "live update" and then boom... no programs can access the Internet and I cannot find a way to put the "allowable" programs back. I take a look at the Internet Security audit files and it says something that the user chose not to allow the programs. That is incorrect.

I thought I simply needed to check the website for some directions. The support area has ALMOST NOTHING, but a really nice way to pay for additional support. I do computer setup and configuartion for a living, but I guarantee I will never use McAfee again. If you're a beginner, don't even bother... I'm still confused and I've been doing this for 20 years.

Buyer beware, if you've read all the other reviews and still sitting on the fence, don't do it. I would not use the Internet Security part of it if they paid me.

1-0 out of 5 stars I don't understand ...
... how the company that is #1 in corporate virus/security can make a product which is either: (1) too hard for the average to moderately skilled user to configure properly, or (2) crashes internet access and internet explorer with a combination of rather scary errors. After uninstalling McAfee Internet Security 4.0, all the errors went away.
I bought the program based on McAfee's reputation, and wrongly thought the other bad reviews were sour grapes, competitors, or incorrect installs/configurations. I was wrong. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Symantec's Norton Internet Security 2003 Professional Edition protects you and your business from online threats. This powerful suite keeps your PC safe from viruses and hackers with full versions of Norton AntiVirus Professional Edition and Norton Personal Firewall. You also get advanced utilities to safeguard your privacy and let you use the Internet more efficiently.

Norton Internet Security's 24-hour protection provides vital Internet security for dialup, DSL, and cable modem users. Ad blocking now stops even more banner ads, pop-up windows, pop-under windows, and other Web distractions. The new Web Cleanup feature deletes unneeded files left over from Internet sessions, while Connection Keep Alive helps prevent dialup Internet sessions from being interrupted.

Norton AntiVirus 2003 scans and cleans both incoming and outgoing e-mail, stopping viruses from infecting your computer or spreading to other computers. It removes viruses automatically, without interrupting your work. To prevent infections during real-time online chats, Norton AntiVirus now also detects viruses in instant-message attachments, including attachments you receive using MSN, Windows, AOL, and Yahoo! messaging services.

Norton Personal Firewall 2003 keeps hackers out and personal data in. Its robust defenses include intrusion detection, application control, and privacy protection--all in one easy-to-use program. Right out of the box, Norton Personal Firewall hides your PC on the Internet to keep hackers from seeing it. That action alone can prevent many attacks. In addition, Symantec's exclusive Norton Intrusion Detection feature thoroughly examines incoming Internet traffic and automatically blocks suspicious activities. Hackers also try to conduct malicious activity from within your PC, so Norton's Internet Access Control is included to stop spyware and Trojan horse programs masquerading as legitimate Internet applications on your PC from connecting to the Internet.

Norton Privacy Control prevents confidential information from being sent out without your knowledge, while Norton Spam Alert helps you keep junk mail out of your inbox by checking e-mail coming in via popular POP3 clients such as Microsoft Outlook Express, Eudora, and Netscape Messenger. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I using NIS w/o problem
Personal Firewall is a must have software (like Anti-virus) for today computer user. I using NIS in my PIII 750MHz Sony notebook w/ Win2K O/S, and Norton System Works 2003. I consider it as an upgrade from Norton Personal Firewall 2002 and everything is fine.
Installation process is smooth too, but the program can detect if McAfee's product (mine is VirusScan 7.0 installed) was installed. It will "warn" you to uninstall McAfee before going on. (I installed it anyway but ok) I don't use any software if it installation having problem at the first of the beginning to avoid trouble (like McAfee personal firewall at my another P4 2.4GHz + Win XP desktop, it screw up my home network setup too).
I didn't turn on the "Parental control" function, so no comment on this. I didn't configured the Spam Alert too... (I think I should but just too busy). Ad blocking is functioning, I guess... I don't visit such kind of websites much through...
The rest is just the same old wine as PFW, upgrade it from version 2002 to 2003 just because I feel the info & programs are more update...and price is right. If you have PFW 2002 installed and satisfy then no need to hurry for this, hope 2004 version have something excite.
Again I dislike the rebate "service" from Norton as I stated at the other reviews. Other stores / vendors' rebate handling already have improvement and do the right job...
I give this product 4 stars because :
1. McAfee Personal Firewall give me hard time, but Norton didn't.
2. Beside this 2 companies I hardly think of anyone will provide me a complete integrated utilities to use (Anti-virus + Personal Firewall + System Utilities). Many offer some but not all so simply limited choice. Using different vendors programs means expose ourself (users) in such a potential of incompatiable software issues that nobody will help us.
Also, add a router (they are so cheap today!!!) if you using boardband for internet access even you have only one computer. This will give you some hardware protection for additional safety.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good program, but don't skip the tutorial
I purchased 2003 in 2003. I tried to install it without removing all the programs from the 2002 version. I used the uninstall program, but Symantec made a change that wasn't in the manual that requires you to remove all previous version programs before installing 2003. I didn't read the tutorial that tells you of the change. It also tells you that you need Explorer 5.5 or higher. I was using Explorer 5 and later updated to Explorer 6. The first installation didn't work, but one-year later after I read the tutorial and made the Explorer upgrade it worked. I am using Windows 98se operating system. What prompted me to try again the second time was that the 2002 version I was using refused to allow me to use the firewall after a online update. It works great but the set-up instructions are difficult to follow. If I didn't have previous experience with the earlier version I would have had big problems. Symantec's support is hard to obtain on-line and you have to pay big bucks to get telephone support. Once you set it up properly it works great.

5-0 out of 5 stars No problem here
I have been using Norton Internet Security 2003 for just under a year now, I have had no problems what so ever. The fire wall has caught numerous problems in the past and I have had no ill effects on my internet access. It has caught numerous virus attacks via websites and email. With virus protection so critical now, I don't see any better product on the market. I liked it so much, I bought it for my wife's business.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mediasales2000
Just wanted to warn people not to buy from mediasales2000. I ordered a Norton Internet Security 2003 from them. Never got the CD. Wanted Norton Internet Security 2003 because heard there were problems with Norton Internet Security 2004. Got new computer with Antivirus on it. Think Norton is still good product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works beautifully on XP
My husband and I are both running Norton Internet Security 2003 on XP systems and neither of us has had any problem with it. When you first install this software, it guides you through the process to set it up the way you want it. You can easily reconfigure its many different features later if you change your mind. NIS warns you when something is accessing the internet, an excellent feature especially if you are always connected with a broadband service. It also alerts you if there is a potential attack on your computer and automatically blocks the attack. If there is an attack on your computer, it gives you details about the type of attack and the ISP# where the attack originated so that you can follow up if necessary.

Other features I like include ad blocking (you can block pop ups as well as many banner ads) and parental controls. Also, you can tell Norton about important information you may keep on your computer, such as credit card numbers and account information, that you want Norton to protect and not allow to be sent out. This comes with the antivirus software, also, so your computer is well protected.

Also, you can set Norton to auto update your antivirus and internet security features so that you are always best protected or you can choose to do it manually. The firewall is also easy to configure to your own liking. This software is pretty flexible and does a good job protecting my computers without having any difficulties with the XP operating system. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Firewall / Proxy
Great security product from Microsoft. And it's also good web caching software.

Wizards make installation straight-forward. Lots of options that can be configured. The software can operate as either a Firewall or as Web Cache or both.

If you want to setup a VPN, there is a wizard that makes it a snap. Incredibly simple.

Requires Windows 2000 service pack 1 before installing. If you're running MS Proxy 2.0, this will import your previous settings.

Packet filtering options are great. Can configure certain events to send email, or simply log to the Win2000 Event log.

Can configure SMTP so that arriving email that contains specific types of attachments are rejected or delayed (for inspection). (For example, any email containing ".exe" or ".vbs" can be stopped.) Also, email from certain addresses or domains can be rejected. These SMTP filters may not be possible however if you install ISA Server on the same machine that runs MS Exchange. I haven't figured that one out for certain yet. I remember getting a warning message that if the SMTP filter is enabled, something regarding Exchange RPC ... ? ...

Lots of good features ! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars increases your spam
we now know that exploits like webbugs etc are used in html to confirm "visiting a site." well in html email adding a webbug that includes your email address is a way to confirm the email address is live and valid and worse yet, that the email has been read. this exploit is now very common. Spamkiller actually does this not just for the mail you kill but even for mail it filters and you never read.

IE every message with a webbug returns a message to teh spammer that your account is live and that you read spam! You can not turn off this feature in either spamkiller 5.0 or 4.0. this is incredible!

use this product and you will be added to every spammer's list, not only as a live email address, but as someone who opens their spam mail (even if you don't!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best anti-virus suite I've ever tried
Most of these reviews are not fair, PCMagazine and PCWorld gave VirusScan and SpamKiller editor's choice and 5/5 stars respectively. I downloaded latest updates and works great. Seemlessly works with my outlook accounts and found infected files and spyware that I didn't know about!!

1-0 out of 5 stars STAY AWAY from this piece of JUNK
one reason for buying antivirus is for protection.
This software will NOT update. so you are left with outdated virus signature.

support is a JOKE.. aha.. what support? their knowlege base has ONE line of info, and it does not relate to update problems.

if you like throwing $$$ away.. go ahead. else, go with another product

if there is a ZERO Star.. i would have used it

2-0 out of 5 stars Bleeccccch
There are better and cheaper programs out there, keep looking.

Not stable, more complicated (than other programs) to set up for email, rotten customer support.

Before buying any McAffe security products go to their website under technical support FAQs and read the section on manual removal of the program. This is what I had to do.

I shifted to PC Cillin, and it was so easy to install I assumed I had missed something.

1-0 out of 5 stars AVOID THE SPAMKILLER PRODUCT!
(Zero star rating if possible)

If you have Outlook 2000, skip this product. It requires you have a MAPI e-mail account and not a POP3 account as most home computer users have. It seems to have a big history of crashes and unexplainable behavior. If you take the time to read the McAfee support board, you will see all the problems this product has.

Avoid! Run away from this one! Burning your money would provide more value for you. ... Read more
