1-0 out of 5 stars Unreliable
I didn't have any problems loading the software, but it isn't recording all of the chat sessions. The summary report says that there were 35 sessions, yet only 10-15 files are sent. It is incapable of properly recording ICQ chats, even though it claims it can. Information at the website indicates that there is a patch to "ungarble" ICQ chats, but when I attempted to load the patch I received a message that my software was already up to date. I wrote to tech support, got an auto response, but never heard from them again. Internet Explorer crashes constantly on each of the computers that I have installed this software on, and we weren't having that problem prior to installation. I am uninstalling it and looking for something else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Difficult to Work With For Any Parent
This software is very difficult to work with. Installation is especially difficult and the only way you can get help is if you pay almost $20 for a support call. I found the instructions very scant and after installing it, decided the hassles of getting it to run properly were not worth the trouble. I would try a number of the free downloads first available on CNET. Ended up uninstalling the software. Also, looked at all the reviews from USA Today and Reuters and they all say this software is either "clunky" or needs more patches.

1-0 out of 5 stars Problems Installing Software - Virus
I went to install Net Nanny Chat monitor following their installation instructions exactly. Unfortunately Net Nanny requires you to turn off any Internet security programs to install the software. After I installed the software and then restarted my computer per the installation instructions, I received a Windows message labeled "Windows NT Authority System." My PC then went into an endless restarting mode whereupon I lost total control of my PC. I contacted Net Nanny through phone and email and a tech support staff member responded by phone and told me that the Chat Monitor software makes the same RPC calls that triggers the Blaster Worm virus. Net Nanny attempted to provide me with minimal support to fix the problem but ultimately had me contact my manufacturer, Dell. I was very diligent in keeping my Virus definitions up to date and running them and had installed Microsoft security patches. I did not have the Virus before attempting to install this software as far as I know. ... Read more

I bought the Windows version. It works OK for a while, then stops initializing on startup, LEAVING THE INTERNET WIDE OPEN FOR YOUR KIDS. Intego tech support very, very poor. Only suggestion has been to uninstall/reinstall, which I have done many times. I've seen others with the Windows version having the same problem. Don't know about their Mac version, but I'm not impressed with Intego. ... Read more

I have used Guard Dog as bundeled in McAfee Office Utilites CD-Rom,(DiscClean Up,Defragmenting Hard Drive and etc.) if you have these same utiliteson your PC ( as part of Windows) then don't by this product, just get GuardDog, as they can cuase conflicts with existing programs and take up a lotof space( if you only have 32mb of RAM) and if PC is Y2K Compliant/Readyand you don't need E-Mail security(only works if the persons you send mailto have the same security program) then you don't need McAfee Office. Theversion of Guard Dog that is in this suite of utilitys is 2.0. I have usedwith some succes but do to some problems occuring in Windows I.E. causingme to have to reload my Ops system from the Mfg.Restore CD I have had toreinstall Guard Dog, because even when not reformating the hard drive Iloose parts or all of the program. I have had Inavlid Page fault happen inInternet Explorer after an Illegal Operation occured when during the checkup phase of Guard Dog wher you can clean up deleted programs so they can'tbe recovered, I got an Illegal Operation box on screen, I closed it out andwent on with the rest of the check up and reboot of my PC, but when I wentto go on the Internet after connecting I could surf do to an Invalid PageFault occured requiring reloading of the Ops system and IE 5.0 and upgradefrom MS web site. I contacted McAfee via thier web site and real time chatwith a Tech ansd was sent instructions on to load Guard Dog in safe modewhich I not done yet. 3-0 out of 5 stars It actually does work (for the most part)!
I have only have been using the program for about week, but have seen promising results. I usually receive approx. 30-40 pieces of spam a day. The SpamKiller 5.0 has actually filtered out most of the spam. If it does filter out something that is not spam, then the real e-mail can be easily retrieved and the sender's name could be added to a friends list to avoid future blocking. During the instillation process, the program only claimed to have noticed my seldom used Outlook Express mailbox and not my Outlook program, which I use for two POP3 accounts. The instructions are not much help with this issue, but the program somehow ended up working with Outlook in a Windows XP environment. Besides the confusing intructions, the other minor another annoyance is the McAfee Security Center that pushes the purchase of McAfee's newest virus scan--it will not recoginize an older verision that has been updated on a regular basis. (The Security Center can be easily ignored and it does not interfere with any programming.) Overall, the product does remove significant amounts spam in an unintrusive manner.

1-0 out of 5 stars kills spam, adds you to spamming list
we now know that exploits like webbugs etc are used in html to confirm "visiting a site." well in html email adding a webbug that includes your email address is a way to confirm the email address is live and valid and worse yet, that the email has been read. Spamkiller actually does this not just for the mail you kill but even for mail it filters and you never read.

IE every message with a webbug returns a message to teh spammer that your account is live and that you read spam! You can not turn off this feature in either spamkiller 5.0 or 4.0. this is incredible!

use this product and you will be added to every spammer's list, not only as a live email address, but as someone who opens their spam mail (even if you don't!)

1-0 out of 5 stars ReputationKiller
My subscription ran out on 4.0 so I went an purchased 5.0.
After installation what I learned is this: they completely redesigned and destroyed a perfectly excellent product, and it won't run smoothly unless you are running a Pentium 4 machine. As far as I'm concerned this was the only product I liked from their product line and now they've just killed it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Works If You're Willing To Be Patient
I recently downloaded the 30 day trial from McAfee for SpamKiller. I had a few minor problems in the beginning getting my email list set up so I wasn't filtering out family and friends. After reading the online help and following the directions (I use XP and full blown Outlook) I was able to filter out spam quite effectively. I have had no problems with the SpamKiller locking up my system or keeping me from getting email. I can understand the frustrations some previous posters have had but I have not had any major problems.

I would recommend this product for most people but please remember you may need to be patient when installing and setting it up for the first time

1-0 out of 5 stars Flat out doesn't work
It doesn't support Secure Sockets Layer, which is required for my ISP. They don't tell you that before buying. I wasted hours, working this out for myself, contacting tech support, and after I explained to them what the problem was, they found it in their knowledge base. "Based on the information you gave us the problem is that SpamKiller doesn't support SSL. Is there anything I can help you with?" "Yeah, how about a refund?" Nope, that is a different department. So, non-functional product (with my ISP, at least.) And they weren't very appologetic, or quick with the refund. And the address that the tech gave me for sending feedback doesn't function either. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

If you find yourself deleting most of the e-mails in your inbox without even reading them, iHateSpam may just be the program you need. Available for users of Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, this utility is great for personal users, but may not always be appropriate for business use.

iHateSpam takes only a few moments to install, but the setup process can be somewhat time-consuming. After installation, iHateSpam mines your Outlook contacts and any folders you choose to look for e-mail addresses you do not consider to be spam. It then creates a "friends" list so all the e-mails you do want to receive will be left untouched by the program. Conversely, iHateSpam also has an "enemies" list to which you can add unwanted e-mails that you receive and the sending addresses will be blocked by iHateSpam. You can also bounce an e-mail back to the sender, which includes a message saying that your addresses is unavailable, thus tricking the sender into deleting your e-mail address from their database.

While all of these features seem attractive in theory, we found that the program has some drawbacks in actual use. First, the setup process becomes redundant for the person who uses Outlook for business purposes. It is extremely difficult and time-consuming to manage a friends list when you receive and send e-mails to hundreds of coworkers and associates. Further, creating an enemies list becomes a delicate process as you do not want to inadvertently have a new customer or contact be labeled as an enemy, even though you have not received e-mail from them before.

All in all, iHateSpam would most likely work very well for someone who uses Outlook for personal e-mails only and who is merely trying to get rid of the junk so they can keep in touch with their friends and family. But for anyone who is already managing a wide database of contacts, it creates more trouble than it removes. --Kendra Hayden ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Some comments 1 year later
I used I Hate Spam! for a year and was quite satisfied with it, and it's a very good spam filter program. I wrote a very positive review some months ago for it, and it has certainly served me well. It was easy to configure and although I was only using it with Outlook Express, which doesn't have all the filter options compared to Outlook, it was still able to catch about 80% of the spam. I had also researched the other spam filter programs before buying this one, and it had very good reviews on Amazon, compared to McAfee's Spamkiller, which I'd already bought, but hadn't opened yet. So I returned it and exchanged it for I Hate Spam!

One nice feature of the program is it allows you to "bounce" unwanted emails back to their source. This sends a return email that looks like its from the main email router that your address is invalid, which hopefully causes it to be removed from the spammer's mailing list sometimes. I don't know how effective this really is, but they're a certain amount of satisfaction in bouncing their message back to them and clogging up their mailbox with unwanted messages too.

My only problem with it is that since I only have 128 megs of RAM with XP, after some months the spam filters got so large my email ran quite slow and my hard disk started thrashing a lot. I was surprised the combination of Outlook and I Hate Spam! had gotten that memory intensive, but the spam filters update regularly from the web, and after a while the filter database gets quite big, and every email gets compared against it, which takes some time.

Anyway, over the last several years my spam load has probably increased 10 times, to the point where I'm getting 10 times as much spam as actual email. That plus the memory issues I was experiencing meant my email downloads were taking a long time even though I only get 2-3 emails a day, and I was getting 20-30 spam messages. That's not much compared to several people I know who get 100 spam emails a day, but still, I finally decided to bite the bullet and change my email account name. You can usually do this through the webmail interface for your ISP. Mine is Earthlink, so I went to their Account Maintenance page, selected eMail, and went through the steps to change my email address. Now I get zero spam and no more viruses either, which were getting more and more frequent, since I'd gotten on probably dozens of spammer mailing lists. Recently I got on the ones for Viagra and was getting lots of those. Then I started getting the ones for penis enlargement products, which I suppose was only inevitable after getting on the Viagra lists. Oh well, that's modern life for you.

Anyway, it was at that point that I decided to change my email name. For some people this isn't practical for professional reasons or business reasons, but I'm retired so although I have about 100 correspondents, it's no big deal. I sent out a message to my entire distribution list that my email name was changing after four or five years, and to make a note of it. Of course, 3/4 of those people won't do that and will fail to put the new name in their address book, but oh well. Anyway, I recommend you do this too if you possibly can. At this point I don't even need I Hate Spam!, but I still run it anyway since it's so much faster now.

One last word of caution. I got all that spam because when I first got online about 5 years ago I not too wisely signed up at various webpages for various online information services such as electronic magazines, or information updates on various subjects I was interested in, and other free stuff, and after awhile, everybody and anybody had my email address. So be careful what you sign up for. Otherwise you'll have more email than you know what to do with.

Another way this happens is if someone you know gets one of those Outlook email viruses that sends emails out to everybody in your address book. Now you'll be getting emails forever with that virus in it since you'll be on the list of people to email. This is one reason why it's important to have an anti-virus program too in addition to a spamkiller.

Overall, a fine program, although if you take my recommendation to change your email name, you probably won't need a spam filter. :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Anti-Spam Program I have ever used
This is the best Anti-Spam program I have ever used. The McAfee SpamKiller ... It blocked out all the emails I wanted and was a pain to use. iHateSpam is easy to use, and it learns quickly on what you do and don't want. It even has an easy to use getting started section where you can add people to your Friends List and your Enemies List. If something gets blocked out, simply tell the program that it is not spam and you won't have to worry about it ever again. This program also has cool features which other programs do not have. One of those features is the "Bounce". That sends back an email to the sender saying that your email address does not exist. This could take you off of thier spam list! The other feature, is the "Report" That reports the sender to thier ISP, this does not always work as sometimes it is impossible to find this out. Overall an excellent program. I give it 5 out of 5 stars. It is well worth the ... price tag. You can get it for FREE now after rebates, that is a great deal. That is what I did. Do not be mislead by estimated shipping dates. It was estimated that I would get mine June 5th through June 26th. I got mine on May 13th!

1-0 out of 5 stars Only catches half the spam
This software only catches half the spam I get. When it misses emails with text such as "Banned government CD" I have to wonder if they guys are updating their software at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best One Yet!
As a small business owner, my inbox used to receive a constent flow of Spam, that is until I installed "I HATE SPAM".
I have tried other products before, but this one is easy to use, and does actually work.

1-0 out of 5 stars I Despise I Hate Spam!
I bought and installed I Hate Spam on Outlook Express. In spite of careful setting of filters, it continues to place good mail in 'Deleted' and put garbage in my 'Inbox'. But, that is not the worst of it!! I have uninstalled it from my computer and it CONTINUES to interfere with my email and delete my good mail. I CAN'T GET RID OF IT!!

I've tried about 10 spam-deleting programs and this one is hands-down the best. It will import your windows address book to its friends list and will import your mail settings automatically. The rules that it uses to detect spam are highly configurable so if it's acting in a way you don't like, you can change it. The rules that it comes with, however; are highly effective. Don't think you're going to have to tweak it to make it work.

We all know the Internet is coated with so much smut that itmakes Larry Flynt look almost virginal. In reality, the majority of thenastiness online is buried deeper than it used to be. But if you havekids and they have access to the Net, it's still a good idea to takesome precautionary steps, and one of the most important is usingblocking software such as Net Nanny. Version 4.0 of this program offersan easier interface than previous versions, and, as with previousiterations, it lets users view and edit its questionable sites list.

This affordable program keeps tabs on what comes into your system fromthe at-large Web, filtering out pornographic sites and images as wellas questionable words in chatrooms and newsgroups, hate literature, andeven bomb recipes. It's not a catchall solution--even with the moststringent of settings, some PG-13 and above material trickled through. And it doesn't take the place of parental guidance and education. Butit's a well-designed program that makes it easy for parents to keeptabs on the online activities of their children, in addition toprotecting personal information and limiting users' online time. Itsthick manual walks parents through the steps for configuring thesoftware and also offers a Safe Family Contract, encouraging parents totalk to their kids about why they're using Net Nanny.

Net Nanny 4.0 installs easily and begins running automatically after asystem reboot. The administrator sets up accounts (up to 12) for eachfamily member with a specific login name and password, and can easilychoose the filtering settings for each user, as well as scheduling thedays and times that each user is allowed online. Sites can be blockedfor individual users, or alternatively the administrator can create alist of only the sites he or she wants individual users to visit.

Net Nanny can be set to automatically update its database of filteredWeb sites (the list of blocked sites and phrases also makes niceshock-value reading), so as new sites are added to the list, the software iskept up to date. The administrator can also check out the log file, which tracks the sites, newsgroups, and chatrooms that users visit, andlogs information sent and received. The admin password is required todeactivate Net Nanny, view the log file, affect any changes to otherusers' settings, and even to uninstall the software.

While no filtering software is perfect--like other filtering software,Net Nanny sometimes blocks out the good with the bad, such as artisticsites--it's a flexible program that lets an administrator create uniquesets of online user rules with an easy-to-use interface. --J.Curtis ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Scheduling function not exactly foolproof.
Scheduling function not exactly foolproof.

I've experienced a variety of small issues using Net Nanny thus far (inability to use Norton Antivirus auto-updates, Win98 auto-updates, Outlook express issues, etc.) but I have to say the worst is the scheduling function.

We purchased NetNanny in part because of it's claimed ability to regulate access times to the internet via a scheduling function. This function allows you to set a schedule of time specific users can have access to the internet. The function works great. However we quickly noticed that simply changing the PC's time (via the clock on the taskbar) will bypass this feature. This renders this feature useless. I don't know of a child over the age of 8 that doesn't know how to change the PC's time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this!
Be warned: this product does not work with current versions of Netscape; the Company claims to have a fix, but aren't advertising it and won't send the patch out unless you go through a 20 or so step set of instructions involving your "FTP client" in the DOS function of your computer to get a download. Not what I was hoping to do. In any case, on principle I wouldn't buy from this type of company.

Although my software promised 30 days of free telephone technical support, they discontinued that without telling anyone in May.

On IE, the software works ok, although it's clunky. I haven't decided whether even to continue to use it if I could get them to send me the patch. But again, there's got to be a better company and a better way.

1-0 out of 5 stars Net Nanny 4.0
I purchased Net Nanny from my local Staples Store; I installed it and discovered that it is totally useless. I t would immediately block out any page that I had set as my home page.

The problems continued when I set the user settings. Being a parent of a pre-teen I wanted to control what my child was accessing but as an adult I didn't need to be protected from myself. The program would block me from accessing sites, even though my user profile was set to not block anything.

Signing in under my child's name I was able to see nude pictures within seconds. But then it started shutting down my browser for violations, even on sites like Yahoo.com, despite the fact that I had the program set not to shut down the browser upon a violation, just to block and warn.

The last straw came when the program started calling up my dial-up networking connection when I was working on non-net related programs, such as MS Word. Over and over the connect box would come up. I tried contacting customer support; their suggestions were juvenile and did not solve any, or even address several of the problems.

The box clearly states "Customer Satisfaction Guaranteed", I have not found this to be true. Staples return policy would not allow them to return my money, just replace with the same item, which I did and tried with the same results.

Net Nanny has ignored my repeated request for a refund by not replying to any of my e-mail requests sent to any of the address on their web site.

I'm now using CyberPatrol, which seems to work as promised, as for Net Nanny, my advice is to steer clear and try Cyber Sitter or CyberPatrol.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm sad
I'm very sad that this did not work. I heard a lot of hype about it and wasted my money. I did a simple search on google of word 'sex' , it returned me saveral pages and 3 links of sponsors, all porn sites. Needles to say I was able to browse their sponsors. I even updated the NN database, but same thing happen.

Other problem is that it is dragging the whole system down, I have cable ISP, it feels like I'm running modem connection. I did not like user name/password either. For big family that might be good, but for me I want it to work quitly in the back ground.

1-0 out of 5 stars I Can't Get It To Work
I have tried and tried to get this product to operate correctly. No matter the setting I choose, it is either too strict or too permissive. I've tried using both a self created list and the one provided by Net Nanny. I cannot get either to work right. I am very frustrated by it and have been forced to uninstall it three times in order to access my homepage (ESPN.com). If you have more patience, maybe your result will be different, but I cannot recommend this product. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars "spy"PC?
How can a software program completly hide it's self 100%? There is no way. If it is sending out e-mails a simple network sniffing program will catch it easly. All I can say is that I'm 15 y/o, really into computers, and put this kind of stuff on to my computer just for the challange of getting around it ;-) I find these kinds of programs lots of fun, theres ALWAYS a way to find them (hmm, my hard drive space just decreased by 200B! What? Network actvity and I'm not doing anything? Whoa! 20% of the CPU usage is not acounted for!) Anyway there is NO software that can replace a human (parent) monitering a childs computer activity. I highy recomend supervison over "stelth" loggin programs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of Cra* software. Reveled itself all of the time.
I installed this on two PCs on a network. One 2000 and one XP. MS messenger would bring up the panel. This was installed in stealth mode. The XP machine also revealed itself. I came home from an errand and my girlfriend asked " what in the he** do you think you are doing monitoring my stuff, trying to get my passwords?" Well it did not even log those and the logs are real hard to read. Uninstalled after one day. Also got me in real hot water. Guess it was my own fault for lack of trust.

Product was shipped fast, arrived as expected. Was a little shocked to see the 'Price after Rebate' = Free status today, but oh, well...

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Do It!
One thing that is not very clear with this software: In Windows XP, you have to have every account be an administrator account, which adds other dangers.

It seriously slowed down my computer, a Pentium 2 400MHZ with 384mb of RAM. Sometimes it is now unusable, it's so slow. It doesn't always email a log and it doesn't capture every keystroke, as claimed.

I dropped 39$ on this and after about 2 weeks, I'm giving up and looking for something else.

After making good Experience with Xelerate's PowerPDF I also bought spyPC to monitor my Children's Internet Use.
spyPC is able to log Chat Conversations, visited Websites, eMails and so on.
It's working invisible and proper for over 3 Months now.
I really enjoy using this Software. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Crashes While Cleaning
I own the PC version of this software and I have been very satisfied with the quality of the PC version however, this MAC version repeatedly crashes while cleaning. Currently, (6-30-04) Webroot does not have an update that fixes this problem. I am sure that they will make a patch but as for right now I would not buy this product until the bugs are worked out. I would easily rate the PC version a 4 or 5 for quality and I am disappointed that the MAC version does not work. ... Read more
