Amazon.com Review

Norton SystemWorks 2.0 provides an integrated suite of software applications that cover almost every aspect of keeping your Mac running smoothly, as well fixing problems when they arise. This new version works in Mac OS X, providing protection for users of Apple's latest operating system.

The suite includes Norton Utilities 7.0, one of the best-known Mac disk utility packages, which offers a full range of disk- and file-maintenance functions. Use this program to recover badly damaged disks, fix minor disk and file damage, optimize your drive by defragmenting files and applications, and recover accidentally deleted files. If the worst happens and you find that you can't even start up from your Mac's hard drive, Norton SystemWorks 2.0 also works as a startup disk, giving you a chance to recover files and fix the damaged drive. Also included on the bootable CD is Alsoft Disk Warrior Recovery Edition, another powerful utility that has a great reputation for recovering files from hard drives that are severely damaged.

Norton AntiVirus 8.0 provides simple and comprehensive virus protection. Version 8.0 of the AntiVirus application not only protects you from a huge range of viruses, but will even scan e-mail attachments and file transfers as you download them, to prevent infected files from even reaching your Mac. The LiveUpdate feature keeps all the Norton applications and the essential virus definition files up-to-date by automatically checking for updates when you connect to the Internet, or at prescheduled times.

Dantz Retrospect Express makes backing up files an easy and logical process. Backing up your essential files is always advisable but often difficult to do effectively. Dantz Retrospect Express allows you to automate the process, backing up to removable media such as Zip or Jaz drives, CD-RW, another hard drive, or to an Internet archive with ease. The wide range of configuration options take some time to organize, but once this is done backing up becomes a single-click operation.

Finally, Aladdin Spring Cleaning allows you to keep your valuable disk space free by deleting unwanted and unused files, duplicate files, temporary Internet browser caches, and it even removes unnecessary code from some software applications.

Currently, some features of previous versions of Norton SystemWorks, such as Speed Disk, do not run on Mac OS X. However, by booting your Mac from the Norton SystemWorks 2.0 CD, all the features of Norton SystemWorks 1.0 are available and work just as well on disks with Mac OS X installed.

Users of Mac OS 8 or OS 9 should note that the Norton SystemWorks 2.0 package includes Norton SystemWorks 1.0 for operating systems older than Mac OS X, so if you already own this version and do not use Mac OS X, Norton SystemWorks 2.0 offers no new features for you.

Mac users looking for a total troubleshooting and maintenance package for their computer will find that Norton SystemWorks 2.0 provides a solution that is hard to beat. --Daniel Jardine, Amazon.co.uk ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not compatible with 10.3!!!!!
The box says OS X 10.1.5 OR HIGHER. Wrong..
Does not work for 10.3 and will not until about Feb. according to Symantec tech support

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a reliable utility
While Norton seemed to work fine in OS 9, I had major problems with it messing up my system 10.1 in OS X. Now, I will ONLY use Norton for the disk optimization utility. For general system maintenance, I use Alsoft DiskWarrior, and that has been excellent. My system has NEVER totally crashed since I began using DiskWarrior monthly. Of course, many other things have changed, like OS X being updated to the different 10.1 and 10.2 updates, so it's hard to say EXACTLY what was the culprit... but still, my gut feeling about what was going down was that Norton hosed my Mac, and since using DiskWarrior regularly, my Mac has never been hosed. So at this point, I'm never running Norton Systemworks' Disk Doctor function again.

1-0 out of 5 stars be careful
This software almost wiped out my disk on my Mac OS X completely when I ran Disk Doctor. Fortunately, it was saved by Alsoft's Diskwarrior 3.0.

1-0 out of 5 stars Some words about Symantec rebates
If you are thinking about buying norton software simply because they are free after rebates, then reconsider it. Although it's well known Symantec makes reliable softwares, When we talk about their rebates, they are liars. Yes, liars ┬ĘCthey really deserve this. Based on my personal experience, I even think theirs are worse than the notorious I/O Magic's (aka, Hi-Val, Digital research). I bought several Norton softwares during last December, and submitted the upgrade rebates right away with required items, Guess what, until today I got only one of them, and it has been almost 6 months. I guess they are testing my memory but unfortunately I kept a good record of every rebate I submitted. That's what we should do if we are going to buy Symantec softwares with rebates involved, although the best thing I would recommend is to avoid as long as you can.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money
I bought SystemWorks because I was new to the Mac and thought this package was a good buy because of the software that it included. I was wrong. None of the utilities worked well and it didn't work as advertized. Spring Cleaning (one of the utilities I thought would be useful) worked but it was an older version. To make matters worse, the rebate I was supposed to get came back stating that I didn't meet the deadline even though I sent it 2 months prior to the expiration date. I will never buy another Norton product! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Even free isn't worth it
This is the second Symantec product I've purchased over the last few years. After hours on the phone with Symantec "support" and more hours surfing their "award winning" support site (who gave them this award and what were they smoking?!), I vowed never again to own a Symantec product.(...)AntiVirus may be a fabulous virus detection, prevention, and elimination product once you get it installed and functioning correctly, but doing so takes an absurd amount of effort. There is a conflict with a standard Windows XP update, so you can't even install without removing that update, installing AV, then reinstalling the update. Once installation was complete, I couldn't activate it for no apparent reason ("Not a valid A8Key"). Turns out AV couldn't get to the Symantec servers, even though I could surf anywhere else I wanted to. No solution for opening ports or anything, you just have to call for phone support (limited hours, M-F only). After 30+ minutes on hold, I had to read the product key (24 alpha-numeric chars) then write down the activation key (34 alpha-numeric chars). Now it's supposedly activated, but it's causing issues with MS Outlook, LiveUpdate won't work, the icon disappears from the system tray, and I can't launch/configure the program once the icon is gone. Solution? Uninstall and reinstall Symantec Norton AntiVirus.

Avoid this product like the plague.

1-0 out of 5 stars Thx for the problems
I cant believe the amount of trouble and headaches i have been getting trying to use this product after the 15 day trial period. WHy is there a trial period for a product you have purchased. Neither amazon nor norton has been helpful in resolving the product code issue. They pawn the problem off on the other. I have been trying to return it but have ben unable. DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely frustrated
This is the most frustrating software I have ever used. I have been happy with Symantec products until now. Never had so much frustration loading a product. After following directions & deleting other programs, I finally gave up & loaded my Norton System Works from 2003. Was getting very concerned that I would not be protected as I waited until an update was due and the software kept giving me an error message, and would not load.

1-0 out of 5 stars Spent 4-5 hours on non-supported product
Last year 2003 and this year 2004, installation has NOT gone well. Last year I spent about 4 hours with uninstalls and with notices that I had a virus when I didn't. They never tell you you must uninstall the former versions before new products or you can have a mess on your hands. If you want support it's by email unless you want to pay more than you spent on the product for live support.
This is a letter I wrote to Norton today.
"I've been using Norton for 10 years and the last two years have been terrible experiences in installation hell. I simply am sick of it and I have uninstalled Norton for good and have bought PC cillin and it was a breeze to install. No one wants to spend 4-5 hours on installs and uninstalls with safe boots and printing out endless pages of information from the Knowledge base which don't solve one's problem. I'm pretty experienced in using a computer and Norton just isn't worth all that time. I know how to clean boot and move around the computer. I am so relieved to have the program off my computer now.

This note you sent as part of my "fix" made me FURIOUS: "Note: Symantec Store is only responsible for software that is downloaded from the Symantec Store Web site. If you purchased the Norton software from another location then please contact the site you purchased from for assistance regarding the re-download of the software.

I bought the program from Amazon.com - a CD. If you won't support your own products that are bought in the store then Norton shouldn't sell things they refuse to support. Like Amazon.com is going to give me support on virus installation...right.

Consider me a FORMER customer forever.

Andrea"

1-0 out of 5 stars The software is fine, Amazon is the problem
This is the 14 day trial!
it does not come with a product key, you can download the 14 day trial for free from Symantec.
I sent Amazon an email thinking for sure this was a mistake and they sent me a link to the Symantis website where i can buy the product key for another $69.00
This is a Scam!!!!!!!!!!!!
Get away from Amazon.com Now!!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's not like we had much choice !
Whether it's a pc or a mac, symantec always has a decent software package.

In the mac world, there isn't many utility packages to choose from.

BEWARE: I believe it was OS 8.6 and/or OS9 that would NOT work with systemworks 1.0. Could cause drive corruption.
(You needed systemworks 2.0)
I bought this package and gave it to the end user.
I warned him about only using it as directed on the package.
Well, naturally he used it with the wrong Mac OS and lost some data.
BUT THAT WAS NOT THE SOFTWARE'S FAULT !

A good, all around utility package.

Thumbs up !

2-0 out of 5 stars Norton who???
Version 1.0 is average at best and this is also only able to run in OS 9 or lower. It does not run natively in OS X, but they have come out with a 2.0 version. The 1.0 version does have good optimization and defragmenting properties, but the 2.0 version has included Alsoft's Disk Warrior. Makes one wonder why Symantec would share the spotlight with another software company. I know why but will remain silent at this time...

5-0 out of 5 stars How did I cope without Systemworks!!!
I bought Norton Systemworks after suspecting I had downloaded a virus on my Mac. I had never used the product (or any other like it) before, so I was pleased that it was user friendly and extremely efficient. I ran both Antivirus and Utilities (both included in the price) to check my system for bugs and general "bad things" and within 2 hours, my Mac was back to its old self.

I am impressed by the wealth and versatility of all the other programms that are included on the CD-ROM (like Aladdin Spring Clean and Dantz Retrospect). Similar to the flagship programmes, they are easy to use, easy to install and set-up, and most importantly they work well.

I would reccommend Norton Systemworks Macintosh for anybody who is having problems with their Mac, or for people who want that extra peice of mind. My only problem is that I wish I had bought it sooner, then my Mac might not have kept crashing orignally.

Fully deserves the 5 star award.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Norton: easy to use and effective.
SystemWorks for Macintosh combines Norton Utilities with Norton Anti-Virus, Aladin Clean Sweep, and Datz Retrospect. The Norton suite installs effortlessly (easier then NAV for PC in my experience), you install Clean Sweep and Retrospect seperately off the same disk. SystemWorks has the familiar Symantec features: control panels (the Norton products can all be accessed through a main panel), and live update. A new to me feature is that when (for example) you run "software update" NAV will detect it and ask you if you want to suspend auto-protect while you're installing software. I happen to like Norton products and have had good luck with them, this product for Mac is no exception. I think Norton SystemWorks is a must have for any Mac home user. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Spyless !!
All the bells and whistle's are here but it doesn't detect or remove much of anything just like all the other spyware programs I"ve tried. I think the best software for spyware to come is going to be from McAfee.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product
This product is the best of the lot. I was blown away at its flash interface and ease of use. Nice work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Performs As Expected
Although I had no SpyWare detected, the product does a quick scan and performs seamlessly without any glitches. The installation is easy for the novice--prompts are clear and easily understood.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Perfect, But Pretty Good
The software installs fairly easily, and it did remove a number of spyware programs. The on-line technical support is good, although the "helper" got befuddled when he could not solve my problem with recurrent pop-ups. I sent them diagnostic information so their software engineers could evaluate the problem. The software is better than Ad-Aware (which is free from lavasoft.com), but I am not yet convinced it is worth $25 plus shipping. The jury is still out . . .

1-0 out of 5 stars Buggy product, no support, bad move.
I recommend NOT buying this product. Its very crash prone, the company is a shell company based in the Philipines that will refuse to help you.

Bad risk, avoid! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this product if you enjoy reading English on your PC !
I just bought this software from Amazon and installed it this past weekend (5/15/04). At first, everything seemed fine. Then, this morning I was cleaning up the recycle bin, which is normally pretty straightforward, right? Well, McAfee prompted me to use it's 'shredder' utility. I thought 'why not?' ... and when the machine rebooted ... I could not read a thing. It apparently changed the system language on my machine. I've never had anything this ridiculous happen before. I've asked Amazon if I can return the software, but no matter what happens ... I will NEVER buy another McAfee product again. What garbage!!! I should've listened to the other reviews here, but I guess I learned the hard way.

I have installed and used 8.0 on two machines for several weeks now. Like all other programs you need to update it online after installation. It is working fine and no problems that some other reviews have shown. The quick clean lite portion works real well in getting old files out.

This box allows the user to put it on 2 seperate machines(...) WoW what a deal.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Product, Show Stopper Bug!
Been using Mcafee Virusscanners since almost day one of the product. There have been ups and downs with each one, and with v8.0 it is a big "down."

v7.03 was an excellent product. Ran great, no bugs. Got me through the horrors of MyDoom and several other attempted attacks but not one virus could find its way through the scanner.

v8.0 however is a different beast. The interface is actually very nice. At first it seems to be missing many of the features in v7.03 interface, but all of them are really there in one form or another, except the part that tells you how up-to-date (in days) your virus definitions are. I really was enjoying the new interface in v8.0.

...then the Big Bug!
The problem is the show stopping bug. Many users, including myself (on two seperate computers), are reporting to Mcafee through their forum that we can not send out emails with attachments over 500K. The email program timesout and it looks like an email server problem. Yet, it is Virusscan v8.0 that is the problem. Mcafee has confirmed this bug, since Oct 2003, yet they have not issued a patch for it in the past 6 months. They say one is coming in v8.1 but for those of us (and there are many) with the problem, the product becomes pretty much worthless.

I am very disappoint at the response rate in issuing a fix, and I do not recommend v8.0 until I see this "coming" patch. For now I have gone back to v7.03.

Hold off on buying this product until they patch it. If it fixes this issue as promised, I then will grant the product 5-stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars No problems! Works great!
After reading the many negative reviews I was leery to upgrade, to say the least. However, since the product was free after the rebates I decided to give it a chance, particularly since the Norton reviews were even worse. So far, I've had no trouble with the new program, which installed in minutes and appears to work well. I particularly like the automatic updates since I don't have to interrupt my work to download them as I did with VirusScan 7. I was also pleased that the McAfee firewall that came with 7 still works and integrated seamlessly with VirusScan 8 Pro. The uninstall program made no attempt to remove it before installation of 8, which was one of my concerns. While I agree that the Security Center is a shameless sales tool, it's easy to ignore. And McAfee is hardly the only software company who charges for technical support. In fact, you'll be hard pressed to find a software company that doesn't charge these days. Yes, it's ridiculous for us to have to pay when we have a problem with their software, but it seems yet another annoyance and rip off foisted on us by almost all of the software companies, so I see no reason to blame McAfee alone for what is now an industry-wide policy. I've been a McAfee fan for years and VirusScan Professional 8.0 gave me no reason to switch. It's a good program.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible company - avoid McAfee products like the plague
Pros:

-It can detect most viruses and updates are available almost every day

- It can be obtained free after mail-in rebates.

Cons:

- It won't always be able to delete/disinfect virus files that it detects

- Starting around a month before your update subscription ends, McAfee "Buy New Subscription" pop-ups appear, you click on the x to close and they disappear...... for 60 seconds. Then they reappear, you click on the x ..... a minute later it comes back. There are only two ways to stop these popups - go online with your credit card number to McAfee.com to resubscribe to their update service or uninstall the McAfee program. Customer service and tech support both refused to tell me how to disable these continuously reappearing and incredibly annoying pop-ups.

- Tech support is virtually non-existant, unless you call in to their $2.95/minute or $39.99/issue support lines. E-mails get canned, non-responsive answers. The FAQ section of their website has no responses to real questions and the "24/7" tech support chat system is always busy or non-functional - its unavailable 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

- Having registered a previous version of a McAfee product may prevent you from getting updates on subsequent versions that the user legitimately acquires. I bought both Viruscan Professional 8.0 and Personal Firewall Plus, after getting VS Home 7.0 (both were free after rebates - the only reason I purchased them) and when the auto update tries to give me the current update of my new programs when I go online, it tells me "You are not authorized to receive this service." An e-mail to customer support got me back a confirmation that I am properly registered for the two new programs and I should have no problems. I guess continuing to receive the "You are not authorized to receive this service" response when I try to update the virus database isn't a problem for McAfee. However, it is a damn big problem for me.

-Who knows what sort of spy-ware McAfee installs on your computer with its standard installation? A quick check with Windows Explorer reveals that their uninstallation procedure does not uninstall 100% of the components of the McAfee software you have installed, that is for sure.

Avoid this horribly run company and its products. Even though it's not costing me any more than tax and postage after the rebates to re-subscribe, I think that's still the opposite of a bargain and I regret my decision to stay with McAfee. In retrospect, I should have gone with either Norton or one of the several freeware antivirus programs. ... Read more
