4-0 out of 5 stars Does the job. And does it well.
Quite frankly, Zone Alarm Pro 4 (ZAP) does the job. And does the job well. With customizable setting for programs and websites, and configurable popups to let you, the user, choose what exactly is and isn't allowed to access the internet, ZAP is essential.

Well, you might ask, "So what? A firewall is supposed to block things like that." Yes, that's true, but ZAP continually asks for permissions. Annoying? Hardly. It lets you know that it is doing the job. You can mark a popup to set it so that program can always access the internet, or you can let it access the internet for only that time, or vice versa. Think something is running in the background and slowing your computer by constantly connecting to the internet?

Chances are that is possible. It was for me. I had a lot of programs connecting to the internet that definitely should NOT have been doing so. Zone Alarm Pro 4 gave me that window and, without knowing what the program was, inspected it further. Long story short - it never happened again.

It keeps a continuous log and permission screen so you can examine/change anything. It keeps a running counter to let you know how many intrusions ZAP has blocked since the installation.

The only problem with ZAP is that it might be too confusing for those without any computer experience. However, it is a necessity and is a MUST. Security is vital.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nope nope nope
Product activation code is supposed to arrive within two-three business days by email. This took three weeks. And you MUST have it to run the software. After finally getting the code, we had many problems with the software BUT could not return it because by that time, the return period expired. If you have a home network, this is not a good choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Firewall Software
After experiencing extreme frustration with Norton Internet Security, I bought this product as a test. I reformatted my hard drive and installed all the factory default drivers and programs, along with Norton Antivirus and Zone Alarm Pro. I have not had a problem since.

When first connecting to the Internet you have to specify which programs you want to grant access to. What is very helpful in this software is that you can ask for more information and Zone Alarm will tell you what program is associated with the .exe attempting to gain access, along with a recommendation. Once you have your primary programs configured (and configuration is easy), everything else is seamless.

I am very very pleased with the ease of setup and integration of this software with my antivirus program. I would recommend this product any day over Norton's firewall or Internet security programs.

1-0 out of 5 stars I was ONCE a big fan of Zonealarm....
...but the latest versions seem to have gone the same way as Symantec's buggy bloatware. After years as a loyal paying customer, I have uninstalled ZA from all my computers. Agnitum's Outpost Firewall is what I'm using now - and it's been problem-free.

The last few versions of ZA have given me nothing but trouble. I couldn't see flash animations on my preferred homepage. I couldn't complete certain transactions online without turning ZA off, completely defeating its purpose. I couldn't read some websites at all, and others loaded slowly, excruciating slowly, even though I have cable and most pages load with lightning speed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Zone Alarm Pro 4 a hit
I purchased Zone Alarm Pro 4 after researching several of the firewall products out there. I was skeptical at first since I didn't really know much about Broderbund's line of products, but after using the product for several weeks I can say that I am extremely pleased with its performance, reliability, and ability to block unwanted users, content, etc. One of my other concerns was that it would conflict with my Norton Antivirus program, but it has not done so at all and has worked seamlessly with it.

The program has an easy to use interface, but comes with many options to suit the more advanced user as well. It will setup the most common programs that you use to access the internet automatically, and then ask permission for other programs that you want to use as well and allow them access to your server/internet connection. You also have the option of turning off all the messages and letting it block things on it's own, but I normally like to see what content it's taking care of.

It does a great job of blocking pop-up ads, and I have not seen one since I have installed the program. It also comes with several email features that I have not used, but may come in handy for others. Overall, it is a worthy product that comes at a cheaper price than some of the other options out there. You get a year of free upgrades, and you do have to register it online with Broderbund to get the upgrades. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Product is Total Crap
VPC installed just fine, but it was absolutely impossible to install either Windows 98 or 2000 even though system met all requirements.

1-0 out of 5 stars Extreemly Slow. Do not waste your money
First let me tell you my operating system:
iMac G4 800 Mhz with 512 Mb Ram

In Short:
Pros:
1- It is cool to have a windows operating system on your mac, and run windows applications on it.
2- multi operating systems
3- more stable than an actual PC

CONS:
1- EXTREEEEEEMLY Slow.
2- LIMITATIONS: most application will run tooo slow to even consider using them.

Description:
1- EXTREEEEEEMLY Slow. and I do not mean it is tolarable. nope, it is taking me 3 hours and still going, just to install my HP all in one 6100.
2- LIMITATIONS: you realy cannot run many applications, and I do not mean at the same time. Yes it is probably true that you can run almost any application that runs on a PC on the virtual PC, but not in a way that is usefull. I was able to install ALMOST every application that I can thin k of (sometimes they take ALOT of time to install), but when it is time to run them, they are sooooo slow, that I just give up.
let me give you a sense of how slow: to start explorer, it might take 1- 2 MINUTES, same for Word, anything that is not microsoft takes much longer it seems. Trying to run a trading software such as Harris Direct Marketspeed or Fidelity's active trader is not possible. These two applications would take around 15 minutes (versus < 1 minute in a pc with the same operating system and with a Pentium II ~ 400 MHz processor) that is if they even work at all. Opening "my computer" takes 10- 60 seconds depending if there is any other application working.

IN SUMMERY:
this is a great concept, but I DO NOT recommend this application AT ALL ......... UNLESS you have a 1.25 G3 mac with > 1GB RAM, THEN you COULD TRY IT AND TELL US, I think then it might be tolarable. Possibly with the next version supporting the G5 it will run at an exceptable level (this one does not run on a G5).

and PLEASE REMEMBER, if you DO NOT have WINDOWS 98, or above DO NOT PURCHASE THIS SOFTWARE, but purchase the one with operating system you want, since that will be much cheaper unless you want that OS for your PC.

1-0 out of 5 stars Virtual PC does not work on the G5
Virtual PC is not supported by the G5's. If you want to run dual operating systems, do not buy this product or the G5!

4-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work on G5
I was under the impression that this program allows you to use windows applications, but what it really does is allow you to run windows on your computer. In other words, you must buy a version of windows in addition to this product. So I had to pay $200 more for the windows program. I think it's too expensive for the value. It doesn't work on G5s. I don't like how when you open Windows, it does not allow your mouse to go outside the windows box so that you can resize the window to make it bigger.

It works well on my ibook, which has a G3. If you want to run windows on your computer, I highly recommend you to get the version with windows already on it, because you are going to have to buy windows anyway.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works well in Panther.
If you've been using previous versions of Virtual PC and upgraded to Panther to find that they weren't working, you will, unfortunately, need to upgrade to Virtual PC 6.
This is not an entirely bad thing. VPC6 has generally been more stable in my experience, and has added some great features. First and foremost, dock integration. VPC6 allows you to use a Start Menu in your dock, which can speed up the process of using the software -- just click, go to the program you want like you would in Windows, and then VPC will launch and start the program.
Also, it allows you to have currently running programs in your VPC session show up in the dock. You can retain these icons in the dock, or use them to force quit an app (although this doesn't work 100% of the time in my experience). Finally, running apps are now shown in the window that pops up when you do a command-option-escape. You can force quit them there if they hang, but again, I've had spotty results.
If you work in an environment such as web design, where you must see your site on all kinds of OS + browser combos, this is absolutely great. It beats having a PC around. However, for extremely processor-intensive tasks, you will need a PC. This is just an emulation, and when you get beyond casual use, you will find that it's underpowered for huge tasks. But for opening strange PC-specific files, tweaking the odd access database, or checking websites (especially if your bank refuses to work with Mac browsers), Virtual PC is great.
It will also easily grab your old VPC5 discs and import them into 6. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars It is cheap, but you get what you pay for.
I purchased disk commander to be installed on my Windows XP machines with NTFS partitions. The software immediatly will hide any non-booting partitions from Windows, that are not recoverabe via Windows XP.

Thus I lost a drive and all its data. Luckily, I had made boot disk number 2 and was able to get it back. Note, during this process, I ran out and bought Partition Magic that doesnt have these hokie issues.

ANyway, getting the drive back was not as easy as this sounds, since the software didnt tell me it was hiding a partition, it took me a day or so of panic to figure out what the software did.

I dont recommend this to anyone that are using Multiple NTFS partitions. In fact, I have 'circular filed' this app and now use partition magic.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's good, but it needs work...
I purchased System Commander 7 in hopes of studying (trying out) RedHat Linux 8 while running my normal WinXP. After the installation, the ride was a little bumpy; several restarts before the freezing stopped. After that, everything worked great for both RH8 and WinXP. Then I decided to run Norton Speed Disk on my WinXP partition (NTFS). After I finished, I rebooted and boom, the MBR was ruined. Apparently, Norton had moved a critical file belonging to SC7 and rendered my XP partition toast. I used the XP recovery utility with fixmbr and fixboot, but the partition would never boot again. I removed the partition, and made a new one... installing XP on top plus SC7. Now everything is working normal again. However, in the end I had data loss (most of what I recovered). Luckily, most of my files run off another independent drive.

All in all, I valued the chance to run Linux in dual boot with XP and just had to put up with the little quirks of SC7 that caused me problems. Number one rule, backup is HIGHLY recommended when using SC7 (and they are not kidding). :)

5-0 out of 5 stars This is great!
I have tried similar products, but this one can handle any kind of setup, old or new - EIDE or SCSI drives - and more. It has very good documentation and is easy to use. I am running four O/Ss on my machine and the partition manager is very reliable and easy to understand. If you are a tinkerer, like I am, you will love this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Veteran
This is another veteran of PC utilities although this one is not really a necessity unless you need to test other operating systems and only have one PC. It performs as advertised but configuring and installing the other OS's may not be as straighforward and easy for some.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get a clue.
This is a good product. I have seen negative reviews concerning this product on this site, but, unfortunately they are written by people who don't know what they're doing. Therefore the reviews are misleading, to say the least.
Referring to the two negative reviews I've seen: 1)If anyone ever decides to partition their hard drive without creating a backup first is asking for BIG trouble - sooner or later.
2)If you are trying to do ANYTHING with Windows 98, you need to wake up and smell the new millenium. GET A CLUE. Your inexperience has nothing to do with the quality of a product. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Effective and comprehensive ad blocker
Zeroads is excellent software. I have tried nearly every ad blocking and pop-up blocking software on the market before I settled on this one. Most ad and pop up blockers are limited to a few types of ads or only pop-ups. Zeroads uses low level network packet sniffing technology based on Microsoft's Layered Service Provider protocol to interercept and modify ad content before it gets to the computer. The result it that it blocks pop-ups, flash ads, gif ads, cookies, and nearly every other form of adware. The block lists are automatically updated weekly by the software. The installation is simple, the user interface is attractive and well designed, and the model is set it and forget it as everything is automated. Web surfing with Zeroads is not only "cleaner" but generally much faster. This program is addictive and I always run it on my laptop.

As a software developer I think an important factor to note is that the layered software protocol is a widely abused system protocol by many software companies and malware. Any search on McAffee forums, or Oracle both of which have software components that use the same protocol have had customers that have experienced incompatability with other Layered Software Protocol applications. Spyware and Malware such as webhancer often use this protocol both incorrectly and maliciously. The result it that when two such applications interact users can experience a severed net connection unless the offending application is removed. Zeroads does do a good job of detecting incompatabile LSP's and even alerting the user as to spyware that may have affected their network connection. Also I found FBM software's 24/7 tech support to be responsive and helpfull.

This program is an essential net surfing tool and I highly recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars It kept ruining my internet connection
I downloaded it from Amazon and from the beginning I had problems. I had windows 2000 at the time. Well I downloaded it and immediatly it destroyed my connection and couldn't get back on the internet for weeks. I removed it and was done with it. Well I upgraded to Windows XP and I tried downloading again but with a different type of internet connection. Well first off it is really hard to figure out, so someone who isn't technically savvy would have a really hard time deciding how to set everything at. And if I were to leave my computer sit just for a couple of minutes I would be thrown offline (this was due to Zero ads because when I removed it, I didn't have the problem anymore). Plus it didn't even block the ads it was awful, don't waste your time and money. I'm still searching for something that actually works and I haven't been able to find anything. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Big mistake
I had McAfee version 7 on my computer for one year. I updated to Version 8 according to their instructions and have had nothing but problems since.

Their technical support is all but non existent. Now I can't delete the software. It has an insert disk box popping up everytime the computer resarts, their shredder option has disappeared, I'm getting runtime script errors and I keep getting booted of my internet connection.

Their only technical support is through email, chat or $2.95 aminute on the phone. I have gotten no where with the first two options. I can't afford to spend $2.95 a minute on the third option.

They have apretty goood racket going. They sell you the product, don't take responsibility for it and then want to charge you to fix what they messed up.

1-0 out of 5 stars Never, never buy McAfee
The support is the worst you could ever concieveably imagine. The product is average, but it is the support that really makes this a one star. Imagine how much effort gets put into creating software if they're this lousy at communication.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just Trouble
I installed McAfee Virus Scan and developed intermittent problems with other software. It also occasionally prevented the printer from working and disabled Cookie Cop. I have since used AVG (free program) and Norton AntiVirus with no problems.

McAfee's support was terrible.

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS
I'm on my second day of trying to get this installed. It's the WORST experience I've ever had with software. It caused my computer to crash several times. First time I installed the Home Edition didn't appear. I had to uninstall/reinstall. Then the Firewall didn't appear. Had to do same thing. Then...on and on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mcafee virusScan professional edition 7.0
I has used it very good. It's protect to your computer against virus, spamkiller and everything... I love to spent it for a long time in my computer... Thank you for your McAfee virusScan and Amazon to introduction this production to everyone to install computer to protect them... ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced and not user friendly
I would highly recommend searching for a different product before buying this one. I am glad I got mine used for five bucks or I would be even more disappointed. This product is NOT user friendly for the computer novice...talk about confusing! I read the directions SEVERAL times and still didn't feel confident that I was doing the right thing. The instructions are of little to no help. I guess if you are selling your computer and want to erase everything before you do, then maybe this is the product for you... but, if you just don't want a few old e-mails or pictures or whatever on your computer, buy something else. The processes on the disk also take forever and a day so if you have limited time, don't try this program!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good dealer/timely shipping /got what i ordered
Good dealer/timely shipping /got what i ordered/Thanks for the excellent service. Keith

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth $50+
This product really doesn't do much at all. I purchased it for free after rebate, thinking it was one of wincleaner's suites. In reality, it is just a data removal solution, which you can get for around $20 or even free. A better use of money would be to buy Norton Systemworks, which sells for the same price (and often free after rebate), and includes everything available in this product in addition to hordes of other useful tools.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good idea, bad execution
The whole concept of data-destorying concept is very good...it is necessary to use such a program to destory important data. This program, however, represents a poor execution. For exmaple, when "zapping" a hard drive to remove previously-deleted files, it removes only the data, not the file name. In addition, the user interface is dated and unprofessional.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ease without the need to install
I was pleasently surprised by this product. One of its greatest features is that you can run it entirely off of CD - no installation is required. It has a number of features including the ability to delete files, to scramble that "empty" space on your hard drive, zap entirely hard drives, and it even comes with 5security settings and the ability to program your own security destruction code. My only complaint is that the instructions are printed on the cheap carboard that keeps the box's shape. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than that other suite
I'm extreamly pleased with Fix-it Utilities. I once purchased norton system utilities and I returned it the next day, V-com fix-it utilities actually does what norton said it would. I think the regestry utilities included are great. The reg cleaner, defragger worked well, and didnt cause any system errors like other products I've tried. I haven't switched to the antivirus from the product I use now, but even without the antivirus this suite of utilities is a bargain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good program
This is and excellent program but for money I would go for the systemsuite. It is the same with a lot more features, options and six trial programs for about the same price. I'm the proud owner of both programs and I highly recommend both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Norton
This program offers all of the features offered by Systemworks (anti-virus, disk defrag, windows maintenance, etc.), but has a Registry Fixer that catches registry errors that Systemworks misses (there are literally hundreds of them). It then lists them as green, yellow and red (depernding upon how critical they may be to your system) so that you can decide which to delete. It also offers a Registry Defrag feature (unavailable on Norton), to optimize registry performance. These two features alone justify the cost of the product.

While it does offer anti-virus protection, it does not include a firewall, anti-spam or spyware blocking. For these features, the best program is PC-cillin Internet Security 2004.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good product, however.
Personally I'd go the extra few bucks and buy the upgraded product from this company, their Systemsuite 5.0

It's easier than upgrading later.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much, much better than ....
I switched from the leading utility when a) they started to charge for anti-virus signature updates, and 2) the auto-update stopped working with no fixes available. The latter was, of course, critically important, especially since my children were not able to download updates manually. (Of course, it has always been possible to get the latest anti-virus signatures without the fee if you knew the trick, but I really resented the extra fee. It began to feel like buying their software was paying to get the right to pay more, and more, and more... )

The Fix-It utilities are much better. The defragmentation module is very fast, as is the disk integrity check. These are the most commonly run tasks.

In addition the Powerdesk utility included (and also sold separately)has itself won several awards for being superior to the Windows Explorer. The dual pane window makes moving files much easier and the preview pane is enormously helpful when file name are not sufficiently descriptive.

Highly recommended! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

If you're looking to maintain your personal computer, store Internet files, or download pictures and files without worrying about catching a deadly virus, you should look into Symantec's Norton SystemWorks 2002. This all-purpose suite features programs that will automatically perform virus checks, clean out unnecessary files, and optimize the performance of your computer.

Norton SystemWorks 2002 includes Norton AntiVirus, Norton Utilities, Norton CleanSweep, and GoBack. Norton SystemWorks 2002 is easy to install and easy to use. It also comes with an extensive user manual to help with any questions that you may have.

For those of you who already own earlier versions of Norton SystemWorks, there are several new features this year that may convince you to update your version. Norton SystemWorks 2002 has One-Button Checkup, which allows you to preschedule your updates with the stroke of a key, and the new Process Viewer to help you solve system problems by displaying all files that are running at any given time. Norton AntiVirus 2002 will now repair virus infections automatically and now has Script Blocking features. All of the classic features of Norton AntiVirus 2002 are all still there, including automatic updates whenever you connect to the Internet.

Norton SystemWorks 2002 is an excellent suite of products for the everyday user. For those of you who enjoy performing your own computer maintenance, you would still benefit from some of the features that protect you from what you may find on the Internet, and from what you may not know. Furthermore, Symantec's online technical support is superb. Symantec also offers a 60-day money-back guarantee if you're not satisfied. --Kendra Hayden ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great diagnostic suite!
Norton SystemWorks is the must have diagnostic suite for anyone wanting to keep their computer error free. The Antivirus protection program is top notch, protecting you and your friends against the new types of viruses that work via your e-mail program. Norton Antivirus also automatically updates itself through the internet, which is good for people who have a DSL or Cable connection. This feature doesn't work well with a dial-up connection, though.

Norton SystemWorks diagnostic programs are fast, efficient and trustworthy. Being a long time user of SystemWorks, I found that this version works much smoother than past versions. SystemWorks schedules itself to do weekly checkups automatically, which makes this the perfect diagnostic suite for the user who doesn't often run diagnostic programs.

As with all Norton programs, SystemWorks is easy to install and just as simple to use. The book that comes with the boxed disk - - which is what I have - - is easy to understand and does a decent job explaining how things work for the new user of Norton SystemWorks. If you've used Norton SystemWorks before, get the download; if you are new to SystemWorks, buy it boxed. All in all, it's a great diagnostic suite!

I am running Windows 98. Also, I went from SystemWorks 2000 to SystemWorks 2002 without a glitch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great software once again
This is my 3rd Norton Systemworks. Am I biased? You bet, but this is due to my good experiences with Norton's Systemworks.

This is the only Systemworks that will work with XP. I don't have XP,I have ME, but my boyfriend tried to use the 2001 product with XP and it won't even load.

FIXED PREVIOUS PROBLEM WITH NORTON SYSTEMWORK 2001
If you used Norton Systemworks 2001, many people received an error message upon loading that the uninstallation file was incomplete or some such message. It is the only reason I gave Norton Systemworks 2001 a lower grade, that nagging feeling that all was not well, despite its excellent functionality. Norton Systemworks 2002 takes that into consideration and corrects it.

SIMILAR INTERFACE TO NORTON SYSTEMWORKS 2001
The interface from 2001 is retained here. Its one button checkup interface is a winner and gives you a chance to clean up your computer easily. You can schedule this function as well.
Also extremely handy is the Antivirus (a must in today's computers) and the Speed disk. The speed disk orients your file on the computer to make things faster to run. I don't know whether it really runs that faster or not, but if you are going to defrag anyway, you might as well, do it optimized. I did notice Speed disk is not present on the XP computers and I don't know why.
Also essential is Clean Sweep. This little gem of a program cleans out all the space junk from web surfing. If you do this alot, this can add up to a sizeable chunk of memory. I run, the one button checkup, Clean Sweep and the virus check on a weekly basis. Occassionally, the One button check up then pushes me to use Speed disk or Disk Doctor. If you have crashes often due to introducing new software, the Hard Disk can get some errors on it and the Disk Doctor can fix this.

VIRUS CHECK ON EMAIL A LIFESAVER
Recently I saw the results of a virus at work. A co-workers lap top, stopped working. No idea why. Lots of lost work. Hours of recovery to do. Luckily, I kept my virus checker up to date at work and at home. Both this co-worker's files and another's had been snagged by my virus checker, at work and at home.
Invaluable is the email virus checker Norton puts on files coming in. Also invaluable is the year worth of updates Norton provides. Viruses are often new and if you keep up with your virus definitions, you will never get one. The live update function on this is a must. New virus definitions can get pushed onto your system whenever a new one gets out. This is the rage of all the corporate systems and can be had at home with this software.

EXTRA PLUS
Prior to installing Norton Systemworks 2002, I had some kind of weird interaction with Aventail communication software and Outlook. One would not work, if I rebooted with the other software present in the computer. I had to remove the Aventail each time and reinstall. Installing the 2002 software and running it made this crash go away. Now I don't know if 2001 was causing this or not, but the bottom line the problem went away and that is a good thing. Since it was an email problem and the Norton program puts the Antivirus catch in the email coming in, 2001 may have caused this problem.

ONLY ONE QUESTION TYPICAL OF ALL NORTON SYSTEMWORKS, THAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND: WHY IS DOES ONE BUTTON CHECKUP, NOT INCLUDE WINDOCTOR?
I think it would be handier if these two were incorporated.
Windoctor is grouped with Disk Doctor, but I have never had the 1 button check up send me there. I have had to go there seperately and check things out.
Whenever my computer has a problem, I tend to run one and then the other, and I have gotten problems found in both or one or the other. However, this is not a major thing and if you know enough to do this, it works. If you don't you might never get the full advantages of this software.

There is a lot more to Norton Systemworks 2002 than I am putting here. However, this is what I have used and cannot recommend it highly enough.

Below is a quick list:

Utilities:

1. Optimize performance: (Speed disk,Norton Optimization wizard)
2. Find and Fix Problems: (Norton System Doctor, Un-erase Wizard, Norton Disk Doctor, Norton Win Doctor)
3.System Maintenance: (System Information, Wipe Info, Image, Norton File compare)
4. Registry Management:(Norton Registry Editor, Norton Resistry Tracker)

Norton AntiVirus
1. Status
2. Scan for Viruses
3. Reports

Norton CleanSweep
1. Clean up: (Uninstall Wizard, Fast and Safe Clean up)
2. Internet Uninstall: (Internet Cache Cleanup, Cookie Cleanup, Plug in Cleanup, Active X Cleanup)
3. Programs: (Back up wizard, Restore wizard)

Extra Features
1. Symantec Security Check
2. Norton Web Services
3. Expertcity
4. XDrive Plus

Also, Live Up Date, Rescue and Options.

Lots of stuff here I don't even use, but I definitely feel this product is essential to keeping my computer running and well worth the money spent.

1-0 out of 5 stars SHOULD BE NUMBER 1 WORST SOFTWARE OF 2002
This package is dangerous for the casual user of a computer. The biggest problem is unstalling it, since Systemworks 2002 fights hard to remain a part of your system software.

If you are not extremely comfortable working in the registry, I would not buy this program since it loads an entry in every folder in Windows.

The Systemworks software has been sliding downhill since 1997/98 versions but this is the first one that causes more problems than it solves. I deleted it from three of my computers because of the time spent undoing problems caused by Systemworks.

The only positive note about the package is Cleansweep but that can be purchased separately.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a Nightmare!
I've wasted a minimum of 5 hours now trying to install this product... I've followed every tip on Symantec's site, from using symcln and on. I've installed and uninstalled 4 times. I had it working part-way for a couple of weeks, but LiveUpdate wouldn't work and I had to download all the virus definitions manually. Scheduler wouldn't work so I had to do all my updates and scans manually. Recently I tried to fix the problems by doing a clean re-install. It only made the problems worse. Strangely, it works just fine on my Win2000 machine but on the NT4.0 machine it is my worst nightmare. Beware....

5-0 out of 5 stars My system has never run better!
Since I have been using Norton SystemWorks my computer has never run better! The antivirus program is wonderful as always and in my book is the best protection you can get for your home computer. The other utilities included in SystemWorks are keeping everything else running smoothly. It's by far the simplest of this type of software I've ever used. The One Button Checkup is my favorite feature. A must have! ... Read more

Cars don't clean themselves, and neither do hard drives. NortonUtilities 2002 helps users keep their computers uncluttered and running smoothlywith only a small investment of time and energy. Utilities quickly and easilyfinds and repairs computer problems, and is scalable to the user's level ofexpertise.

It takes a bit of time to install and run Norton Utilities the first time, especially if the machine has been used for any length of time withoutmaintenance. Still, the manual and help functions are clear, and most users willhave it running invisibly in an afternoon or evening (novices should definitelyask for the aid of an experienced user). The program requires a bit ofadditional attention every week or so, as it discovers new problems and promptsfor authorization to repair them, but most of its work is unnoticeable.Repairing damaged files, defragmenting crowded drives, and monitoring systemperformance are the most widely useful utilities, but some users willparticularly appreciate tools like WipeInfo and the Registry Tracker. One ofNorton's great strengths is its scalability, which depends on the user's levelof expertise. Old hands can fiddle around under the hood to their heart'scontent, while novices can just start it up and watch it go.

If you own a previous version of Norton Utilities, you'll want to upgrade to the2002 version if you're running Windows XP; other Windows users can get alongjust fine waiting for more new features. For new users, Norton Utilities is agreat way to keep your computer happy, safe, and sound. --Rob Lightner ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Some words about Symantec rebates
If you are thinking about buying norton software simply because they are free after rebates, then reconsider it. Although it's well known Symantec makes reliable softwares, When we talk about their rebates, they are liars. Yes, liars ┬ĘCthey really deserve this. Based on my personal experience, I even think theirs are worse than the notorious I/O Magic's (aka, Hi-Val, Digital research). I bought several Norton softwares during last December, and submitted the upgrade rebates right away with required items, Guess what, until today I got only one of them, and it has been almost 6 months. I guess they are testing my memory but unfortunately I kept a good record of every rebate I submitted. That's what we should do if we are going to buy Symantec softwares with rebates involved, although the best thing I would recommend is to avoid as long as you can.

1-0 out of 5 stars A little surprised
I dont understand why anyone would by this particular product.Dont get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoy other Symantec products. However, most of the features of Norton Utility are also available in Window XP.Just click on start programs accessories and system tools and you will find a disk defrag and disk cleanup program.I find that the Norton Utilities would then be a waste of money.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Rush Job for XP
I have been a huge fan of the 2000 version of Norton Utilities, have recommended it to friends and family, and would never set up a friend's computer without also installing that utility.I never had any problems with it.However, upon installing Windows XP on my PC, I had to buy Norton Utilities 2002 (the 2000 version would not even install). Despite my understandably high expectations of this new release, my first impression was one of disappointment. After a month with it installed, I'm still disappointed, and it seems to me this piece of software was slapped together as quickly as possible to be available for XP.

Some of the features work OK, even though, as others have stated, there are fewer in this version than the previous release.Speed Disk - what have they done to that utility? It's slow, it doesn't appear to actually fully defragment your drives, and on top of it all, even the graphics are cheesy.I'm not sure I understand what's wrong with Disk Doctor, but it doesn't fully agree with XP, insofar as it won't seem toactually repair anything it may find wrong.

In short, Norton software generally is excellent, but this particular software release - where it relates to Windows XP - falls WAY below what should be Symantec's standards of quality and effectiveness.I'd recommend it for what it does have that XP lacks, but I do so only halfheartedly and suggest you don't get your hopes up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope for the nearly dead
I inherited a computer at work that has had several users, ran windows 95, and ran like molasses. I had a friend who used to be a IT exec come over to help me with upgrading to W98. He then ran Norton 2002 Utilities on it and now this machine runs better than it has in many years.
He then ran it on my home machine (2000 pro) and cleaned it up as well. It is running as well as it did when I installed W2000 pro a year ago.

Highly effective tool for multiple platforms.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money!!
This is a great program.I was always a McAfee user but after it kept slowing my system down, I switched to Norton and I couldn't be happier.
I really like all the tools that come with this program.I can optimize my PC, scan for obsolete files and many other things. This program is well worth the money. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Dont be fooled
Im a sucker for 'improvement' software. So when i ran accross this one i thought hey why not. What a disappointment. The interface is not as intuitive to what you expect from a typical windows program.I did not like it.I ended up unloading it hours later. If you want something new to play with and dont mind wasting money then go ahead and buy it.if you want something a little better then buy 'XP smoker' or 'Tuneup Utilities' both are much easier to use and has alot more features that you will use. ...
