5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic time-saving marvel!
Quickeys 3 by Startly Technologies is a powerful utility to help the computer user create an endless variety of shortcuts that automate everyday, repetitive tasks, resulting in increased productivity.

Quickeys can:

* Launch and manage files, folders, servers and applications (ex. launch your documents folder, switch hard drives, copy or move a file automatically to another location for quick on-the-fly backups)
* Launch web addresses and automatically enter passwords (ex. Check e-mail accounts, review bank statements, pay bills online)
* Write automatic e-mails, documents and any other application requiring text entries(ex. Send an automatic reply to an e-mail, write an invoice,, automatically write your grocery list each month)
* Calculate formulas and mathematical data
* Select menu items including context-sensitive items
* Select items based on single, double, triple and right mouse clicks
* Launch apple script and UNIX commands
* Combine shortcuts you have created into single click power shortcuts.

Quickeys builds these shortcuts into the system interface and allows the user to:
* Create hot keys and key combinations to launch shortcuts
* Select shortcuts from a drop down menu on the menu bar
* Enable shortcuts by speech commands
* Launch shortcuts from the finder or only in specified applications (scope)
* Launch shortcuts based on a specified day or time
* Map any function or application to a key, dater, time or device.

The program does for the Operating System what the actions palette can do to automate steps in Photoshop.

Installing the program was as easy as dragging the icon into the Applications folder and launching the program. Quickeys comes with an indispensable 216 page user guide which requires some careful study before mastering the program, but if you give it some time at the beginning it will be worth your while. And if you are truly stuck, Startly Technologies offers a variety of support options including phone numbers, e-mail addresses and best of all, an online forum called "Quickeys Community" which is compromised of Quickeys users throughout the world. Best of all a link to the Community is built right into the Quickeys interface.

The Quickeys 3 interface operates similarly to that of the finder. Customizable icons are available on a special menu to help the user become comfortable with the variety of tasks.

I began the Quickeys learning process by creating a list of desired shortcuts I wanted to have automated and then approached the software to determine if they could be done. The first item I selected was to create a single shortcut that would launch Entourage, check for new e-mail, apply rules and spam filters, and move unwanted e-mail to the trash. I also wanted QuicKeys to log into my instant messaging accounts, and go online to check my bank balance... all with a simple one-time keyboard combination.

This is where I really became impressed with Quickeys. Not only did Quickeys launch Entourage, but the built-in added options of selecting drop down menu items allowed QuicKeys to retrieve new mail, apply the filters and dump my spam into the trash.

Quickeys also launched Yahoo Instant Messenger, logged into my account and hit the ok button and in a flash I was chatting withmom in Texas.

Finally Quickeys launched my Internet browser, typed in the address for my bank institution, added my user name and password in the proper fields and logged me into my bank account.

I was able to combine all three of these shortcuts together into a final single masterstroke. So now when I wake up in the morning, I hit a single key on my keyboard and have my morning coffee while Quickeys performs my morning computer ritual for me... and mom waits for me to wash the dishes and get back to my computer.

As I began to write this review I had noted that the more shortcuts I created the greater the number of keystrokes - and resulting key combinations - I had to memorize. I was going to suggest that the software developers create a way to have the list of shortcuts available in a drop down menu on the Finder's menu bar. But last night as I was digging deeper into this program, I discovered exactly that feature. You beat me to the punch guys.

2-0 out of 5 stars It really gave me a scare!
First off, it requires the removal of your existing anti-virus if you want to install the Panda anti-virus. I reluctantly removed Norton AV-2004 to try Panda. But, the real fun began when I had the utilities do a few things like defragment, which caused a complete lock-up of the system when the screen saver lighted up. Then, when doing a complete system scan using Panda, there was the same problem once again. It just wasn't worth the trouble. But the excitement began when I tried to reinstall Norton. Something wasn't right, and it took about an hour to figure out. IMHO, it just isn't worth it - too many bugs!

4-0 out of 5 stars It maintains what Operating System is unable to do
I have used System Mechanic and am impressed with the collection of tools it offeres. I have used its Optimizer for system performance and Memory and very impressed compared to other products that I have used for similar purpose. Its capability to fix registry problems and clear and locate junk files is very impressive. Disk fragmentation is awesomely quick(Better than windows, what a pitty!).I have not used its antivirus and fire wall because I am happy with avast and Zone Alarm Pro. The only weak section is removal and detection of spyware. It gave a clear signal of finding no spyware but AdAware detected one problem. If someone has used its antivirus and firewall features, please let me know of its capabilities.Overall I am satisfied and recommend it for everyone.

2-0 out of 5 stars Save your money for something that works, like Norton!
I tried this product to see if it was really great like some other reviewers had indicated. It is a strange set of programs. When I tried to use Turbo Tax 2003 Deluxe, my system locked up (it worked fine with Norton). Well, I still have to finish my taxes, so I uninstalled System Mechanic 4 Professional and re-installed Norton System Works and Personal Firewall. My system now works correctly as it always has been. There are several glitches in this product but the biggest one is that you have to do your updates before you register it. It will switch the user and serial number ID's before the updates and you will fail on trying to register. After using Norton products since 1993, this program looks like a dud. If you wonder if I goofed up the installation, well I don't think so because I have been in the computer business for over 10 years and have a B.S. Degree in Computer Science. "I ain't no dummy"! My advice is to stay with Norton and leave this product to the birds or McAfee.

4-0 out of 5 stars it's not perfect, neither is exploring mars!
i've taken symantec systemworks 2003 out of my computers, at home and work. over the years, i had noticed glitches in systemworks and the continual updates that eventually fixed the problems the application created. of course, the newest version always held the solution!

well, i took the chance of using system mechanic, v.3 and found it did exactly what i need: in far less diskspace, less memory overhead, and if you followed the easy-to-read warnings and instructions it was a NO-BRAINER system utility. it did exactly what you wanted and let you know what it was doing in simple terms...amazing, huh??

system mechanic 4 is on my home machine and it's been there since it came available. there have been NO PROBLEMS created by the application, nor has system mechanic failed to do what it promised. the professional version is going to be purchased within the next several weeks because i'm cautious before spending money on system utilities and carefully test it before buying multiple copies or licenses.

i gave the product four of five stars because the interface, though improved since v.3, is a bit clunky. for my money, i'd rate it 4.5 stars compared to 1.5 stars for symantecs systemworks. sometimes it takes some time and real effort to evaluate a program's worth and usability. if we can land spacecraft on mars, why can't we have a computer OS that really works? and, doesn't require system utilities in the first place!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware..Does not detect many spy-ware bugs
I won't tell you which ones of course, (for fear of injuring my self-esteem). I had previously purchased Spy-Sweeper V2 from WebRoot and found it did a marvelous job of detecting and eliminating all manner of adware and related bugs. I purchased SM4Pro to do some disk clean-up and decided to test its bug- remover function. I turned off SS V2 and visited several sites which I knew to be infested with all manner of nasties. I then launched SM4 to do it's thing, which it did in about 45 seconds (SS V2 takes anywhere from 7-8 minutes...that should've been clue 1) and it detected...ZERO, that's right zero bugs! Puzzled, I launched SS V2. 9 minutes later it rounded up all the usual suspects and disposed of them promptly! What's more, don't rely on it to "cover" your internet tracks. It won't do this with any manner of consistency, either. ... Read more

Migrating your stuff from your old PC to a new one is a daunting task, and often a source of bewilderment and frustration. Detto Technologies'IntelliMover is designed to make the process a simple, step-by-step procedurethat anyone can follow, even a staunch computer newbie. It achieves its goal, although it would be nice if it was designed to do more.

IntelliMover replicates the GUI and application settings from your old PC toyour new one through a graceful and friendly interface. Available with aparallel or USB cable, it's a complete migration package in one product. Theinstallation procedure includes an animated tour of the program, and it assumesthat you're ready to migrate: after installing, it launches right into itsstep-by-step transfer function. You can, however, cancel it and restart theprocess any time by launching the application from the Start menu.

Capable of transferring settings from old Windows operating systems to newerones, the process truly is as easy as Detto makes it out to be. It assumes thatyou've already installed the applications you intend to use on the new computer,as the software won't transfer entire programs, only files (such as Worddocuments, image files, everything in your My Documents folder, and so on) andsettings. During the step-by-step process, it searches the old computer foranything it's able to transfer, offers to update itself via the Internet in caseany patches have been released, and then instructs you to install the item andfollow the steps on the new computer. After the initial transfer is complete, you can run a drag-and-drop file transfer utility to pick up any files that theprocess might have missed.

In our tests, IntelliMover recognized most applications and games, but it didmiss a handful of them. It recognized and prepared to transfer settings forQuake III Arena, for instance, but not for more recent titles such asJedi Outcast. It also missed PowerStrip, a popular video customizationapplication, and Mozilla, a browser alternative to Internet Explorer andNetscape. Worse, it refuses to transfer entire applications, forcing you toinstall them before the move (probably for copyright concerns, but we see nological reason that it can't move applications instead of copying them). Thedocumentation is thin and sparse, and doesn't include a troubleshooting section, and although we didn't encounter any problems, that doesn't mean nobody will.

Regardless, IntelliMover is a simple and capable migration application thattakes the mystery out of moving your old files and settings to a new PC. It doesexactly what it's advertised to do, and it does it well. --Joel Durham,Jr. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More useful than Windows XP File Transfer Wizard
I transferred from a Pentium 2 Gateway 233 MHz to a Pentium 4 HP Pavilion 2.4 GHz. I first tried the Windows XP Transfer Wizard, but there are several drawbacks to this method: (1) I had to establish a Small Office Network (buy a router, use the Network Wizard, etc.), (2) XP Transfer Wizard does not transfer preferrences, settings, or data from applications such as Outlook Express (which means you loose your Address Book and all the old emails). On the positive side, Windows XP transfer wizard did a good job with my MP3 files; it took about 30 minutes to transfer about 1200 files. Also, it came loaded with the Windows XP operating system (so it is "free").

Intelli-Mover transfers settings and preferences, as well as data files. The program needed 2 hrs 39 minutes for the complete transfer of about 1 Gb. Here are a couple of advisories: (1) You need to have applications loaded on your new computer before you transfer; (2) You will need a floppy to create a Transfer Wizard on the old computer; (3) Be careful with the transferred data, namely, do not delete an application like Outlook Express and reload it after you have transferred: you will loose your Address Book. (5) Note, also, you have to turn off all anti-virus software during the transfer. (6) You should not get rid of your Old Monitor before transferring; a blind transfer is really not an easy task. (7) Finally, you have to check all your applications by starting them before you can really deem the transfer complete.

I hope this helps.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy or use this product
I recently upgraded from an HP running XP Home, to a custom built PC running XP Pro, and wanted to transfer files to my new PC in an efficient manner. Well, after spending approximately 10 hours installing programs on my new machine, and then running Detto (which took about 8 of the 10 hours), I have had MULTIPLE problems with my new PC, which worked perfectly before I ran Detto. I should have used that time to simply burn stuff to CD's instead. If you are thinking of purchasing this product - STOP! Do NOT do that. Instead, either burn stuff to CD's or get a "mirror" program instead. Save yourself the aggravation, and the money. It's just not worth it. Too bad Amazon doesn't let you give something ZERO stars, 'cause that's my real rating.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Use this product
This product trashed my new computer. I selected from intellimover's list only a few options for moving data, one of which was photos. The SW logic moved every .jpg, .bmp, and .gif file from the old to the new computer, which moved about 1GB of garbage, over 3000 gifs alone. Also, it created new folders and subfolders for all the "new" art. Thousands of tiny bits of art ("Welcome to your new (1997) Hewlett Packard"), scattered about hundreds of new folders and subfolders. My new Dell went from a clean machine to a cluttered mess in seconds! And to make matters worse, the only files I wanted, the photos, went to an obscure folder and my software couldn't find them! I had to move them all manually anyway. Also, it did not move my on-computer saved emails, my GPS map saved routes and areas, and a few other small items. For the hours of aggravated deleting I've had to do, 5-layers deep of folders with only 3 obsolete gifs in the bottom folder, I'd recommend avoiding this product and recording your data on a CD for manual transfer instead. I wish I had. It would have saved a lot of time and irritaion.

1-0 out of 5 stars Software is Poor for Transferring Data
IntelliMover , which is marketed by both Momorex and Detto Technologies, is a software product for transferring (migrating) data from the user's old PC to his/her new one. Unfortunately, it is a poor product that fails to deliver in my experience. Packaging and Websites by Memorex and Detto misleadingly promise that the software will transfer data quickly and easily from the user's old PC to his/her new one. In my experience, it failed miserably. I will never use the product again and recommend that no one buy it.

First, except perhaps in fine print hidden somewhere, Memorex and Detto fail clearly to inform the buyer on product packaging or its Websites, that the program does *not* transfer applications.

Second, during the transfer IntelliMover is supposed to move all files associated with each program from the old computer to the new one, including those that define the user's personal settings and customizations of said programs. However, in my experience the software did this for only some programs.

In sum, I recommend the PC users look elsewhere for solutions to transferring data from an old PC to a new one. Clearly, in my experience the manufacturer overstates what IntelliMover can deliver. In my opinion, the product is poor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked as designed & even transferred Outlook Express files!
Having read lots of online reviews here and at CNET on this software, plus asking a Microsoft Certifed Professional consultant who had used IntelliMover with Windows, I was a little worried. Several mentions in the reviews, plus the face to face review, mentioned problems with Outlook Express. The client works as a business consultant, and bought IntelliMover with their new Dell/WinXP laptop, to move files from an HP/Win98 tower. Emails being a crucial part of business documentation, the client needed to keep them all. Also the client wanted the exact same settings and preferences on the laptop.

Just in case, I exported the address book using the instructions in Outlook Express Help. I also saved the email files (I've forgotten the extension, something like WXT or WXB. The Personal Address Book extention is WAB). When given the chance to choose what to export, I went with the default: everything. My client is rather meticulous, had gone through and deleted unwanted files beforehand. But there was no problem. The Outlook files all transferred, and the client was able to open and read them.

I work with PCs at my job so I am fairly familiar with computers, connections, hierarchies, directories, settings, install wizards, etc. However I think with careful attention to the instructions, a person who does not care to go deeply into technical stuff could use this without problems.

You need to understand a bit about directories (if you know Windows Explorer, you'll do fine) and how to connect USB to USB or parallel to parallel. For the rest, you just need to know how to read, point and click as instructed. In using IntelliMover, you put in the CD and set up on the old computer, then put the CD in the new computer, set up and and connect them. It really took a little less time than Detto's predicted 90 minutes.

This was the first time I had used a transfer application. But with the benefit of user comments such as here on Amazon.com, as noted, and by going over the instructions a few times before actually hitting any keys, I didn't have a problem setting this up and getting it to work.

In the event, it went like a charm. As I said, the Outlook Express files migrated as well as all the other files, settings and preferences. The software interface was easy to use, the documentation - a colorful three-fold glossy brochure - was spare but concise and fairly well written. Really, the file transfer was the shortest part of the setup session -- setting up Windows on the laptop, hooking it up to broadband and setting up the Internet connection took way more time.

I saved the logfiles just in case but no hitches, and no problems reported as of a week later. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, excellent software
I've owned and used BlackIce for over 7 years now. In all it's upgrades, it has been a non-intrusive, easy to use and effective software product.
The honest truth about this software is: It does a fantastic job of logging internet intrusions and STOPPING them. There is no combination of intrusion attempts that can get past this product and I've tried over the years. The interface is easy to understand and quite minimal for a product of such stature. It also boasts an effective internal application protection feature, which I don't really use (because my computer isn't full of trojan, virus, or otherwise and I never install what I don't know). Of all the other reviews below, the reviewer from Petaluma, Ca is the honest and accurate one. My experiences with the product are similar to his experiences. Be warned that some people who like the FREE ZoneAlarm, make reviews for Blackice which simply are not true. There are security reviews, you can find on the internet, which fully test Blackice and find it's a very solid and strong product which has no equal.

2-0 out of 5 stars I used this before I discovered Linux
With Linux, you can do anything you can do with BlackIce and 5,000 things you can't. Worth a few days learning how to write filters to block out things.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Investment
This Software is not worth the money or the trouble. I had problems since day one when I installed this piece of junk. My start up programs would not load when the application protection feature is on. Even talking to the support people still haven't got the damn software to work the way is suppose to. Piece of advice. Do not purchase this piece of junk. Stick to Symantec there are far better with their software than what this people is. This BlackIce piece of junk it ain't worth the time or the money. This is the worst software I ever bought.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware this product!
I recently purchased this product. It did not function. repeated e-mails to the manufacturer got no response. Purchase at your own risk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Many Biased Opinions
I've used Blackice for a long time and I'm very satisfied. So many people get confused with the older versions of this software and the latest (3.6) and say that it can't filter outbound traffic. The latest version does do this very well. I've tried every internet firewall test i could find and blackice passed all of them 100%, including gibson research corporation's shields up! and leaktest. I did have to manually tweak the config file to get the thing to block ICMP pings, but it was easy. I especially like the interface, which is straightforward and doesn't use any flashy graphics to look good, it's just a piece of software that sits there and does its job. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Whether you need to recover from a hard-drive disaster or you just wantto make sure your Mac is running as smoothly as the day you bought it, NortonUtilities 6.0 for the Mac contains all the tools you'll need. Installation ofNorton Utilities 6.0 is quick and easy. If you bought the software to recover adamaged hard drive, the CD acts as a start-up disc, allowing you to recover yourdrive without damaging any missing data. Even if your drive is apparentlyworking fine, it pays to run Norton Utilities 6.0 from the CD to first check forproblems before installation.

Norton Utilities 6.0 consists of five main components to cover almost anymaintenance you will ever need to do on your Mac. Norton Disk Doctor scans yourdisk to find and repair damaged files and applications, as well as detectingphysical damage to areas of the disk itself. With Disk Doctor set toautomatically repair any damage it finds, keeping your disks error free is asimple task.

Speed Disk optimizes your disk performance by reuniting files that have becomefragmented and then moving them around on the disk to improve its performance.FileSaver and UnErase effectively work together to protect your files bytracking files that you delete, and scanning your disk for damage at start-up orshutdown. If you happen to delete a file that you later need to recover, UnErasecan often recover the file in its entirety. Finally, Volume Recover works inconjunction with FileSaver to recover disks that are either so badly damagedthat they cannot be read, or that have been accidentally initialized.

1-0 out of 5 stars Caution-Old Version
This is not the latest version and does not work with newer Macs!

4-0 out of 5 stars Booting from CD
The Norton Utilities 6.0 for Macintosh worked fine, but I was disappointed that it had to be run from the CD instead of installed. I hope a fully compatible OS X version will be coming soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mac OS X Life Saver!
For years Norton has made this easy-to-use utility collection for rescuing Macs in distress, and with version 6.0 they won't let you down. After playing with Mac OS X for a few weeks I added some old corrupt files to my computer and couldn't reboot. At first I had my doubts, but Norton came through and saved the day! Owning a copy of this program is the best insurance purchase for your Macintosh, it's like having your own IT Dept. ready to help you around the clock. Previous owners of the program will like the fact that it hasn't changed that much and yet has kept up with the times. Norton Utilities is a must have product for any basic software library for your Macintosh. I only wish that Apple would include a copy with every Mac shipped!

Great product. Easy and inexpensive upgrade from 4.0. Aided my upgrade from OS 8.6 to OS 9.1 immensely. 5 thumbs up

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for all Mac users
Having used version 4.0 for three years with excellent and invaluable help for optimizing my Mac 7200/120, I purchased v. 5.0 when I upgraded my computer to a current iMac DV+. Unfortunately, many features of the Norton Utilities 5.0 and 6.0 are not yet functional for iMacs, OS 9+ and G3, G4: boot from CD, therefore Optimizing using SpeedDisk is not available. Symantec's technical support site offers an abundance of information about their knowing of these deficiencies and they say they are working on solutions. Symantec says the same problems exist with version 6.0. Had I visited the Symantec site before purchasing, I would have waited for a fully functioning product. (3/8/01)
Since this initial experience, I have not attempted to use this software again. I am unaware of any patch or upgrade offered by Symantec to remedy this problem. The Apple Disk Doctor provided utilities have been sufficient. (9/8/01) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Data Lifesaver
With more than 1,000 viruses and worms being unleashed over the internet every day, anyone who has important documents, data or content on their PC needs to carry out some type of regular backup and disaster recovery program. Having used more than six different programs over the past five years we have found that Backup NOW! is one of the easiest to use and most versatile products we have found for our small business network and notebook computers. It really is two backup/recovery products in one package. Now we duplicate and backup our complete server and user systems every three months and do weekly and daily incremental backup. We've only had one near disaster with a worm infestation on one of our systems and were able to quickly recover all of the data. But the software really shows its value when people accidentally delete (rather than save) files they are working on. They don't have to start from scratch because BackupNOW! lets them bring back the specific file to the state it was the evening before. If your office is like ours and running on adreneline that feature alone is worth 3x the cost of the product. We like the fact that BackupNOW! saves to so many different types of media. On the office network we use DVD-RW because we can overwrite a thousand times and can randomly access the disc for recovery. On our notebooks we save to CD-R because the media works anywhere and costs almost nothing. But best of all the software simply works the way we like to work. That's one less thing we have to worry about in our business ! ... Read more
