Amazon.com Review

They say that breaking up is hard to do, but if you've got Partition Magic 5.0 on your side, you can slice and dice your hard drives easily and painlessly. You'll need to start from DOS or Windows, but you can add as many different operating systems as you like once you've got the partitions set correctly.

The job of partitioning is made simple enough that it's sure to drive some computer techs out of business; with the simple point-and-click wizards and well-written online hints, those who know enough to want to partition can do it themselves. The preview feature is excellent, permitting you to examine the changes you're ordering before you make them permanent. This should eliminate the boneheaded mistakes that tired or stressed-out users inevitably make--and that are so devastating in low-level operations like these.

One important caveat: Partition Magic 5.0 won't work on every system. Since you're monkeying with some of the deepest elements of your machine, some configurations will return errors or simply not allow installation. This is unpredictable, but PowerQuest is constantly working on patches and upgrades (such as the promised Windows 2000 version).

On most systems, though, the software is a thing of beauty--you can cut big, fat 32 GB drives down to size; create, resize, and merge partitions on the fly; easily move applications between partitions; and convert between file systems without losing data. Whether you want to add a new OS or just maximize your hard drive space, Partition Magic 5.0 is the safest, easiest answer to your breakup problems. --Rob Lightner ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but be careful...
I purchased this software package because of: 1.The customer reviews, and 2.I wanted to partition my new 45 gig hard drive (I thought it would speed up the processor speed).

The instructions are not user friendly, I had to muddle through the process of setting up my partitions. Once the software started, it too SEVERAL hours to complete the process. This information was not in the book, but on a supplement insert I happen to read while waiting for the process to complete (needless to say I stopped waiting and left my computer on by itself to do its work).

Once the program was in place the partitions were competed the way I set them up, but the program caused problems with other software I previously installed and those I installed after Partition Magic. For example, my internet connection program would not work and tech support ran out of alternatives to solve the problem.

I was lucky to have Power Quest "Second Chance" included with my computer so after I uninstalled Partition Magic, I revereted to the second chance program to restore my system before installing PM. Everything worked after the uninstallation and restoration.

As an unexpected bonus though, the partitions were still in place and my computer system works the way I wanted it to, but I don't notice any faster processing speeds.

Good program but you may need more than an intermediate knowledge of home computer systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure magic - it saves time and finger-crossing!
The greatest thing since sliced bread resliced my hard drive to perfection! All my partitions are FAT 32 under Windows 98. Yes, I've used FDISK before to do repartitioning and, believe me, it feels so much better when you don't have to hope and pray that you backed up everything correctly on your old partition. (I still back up old partitions, of course, but now I'm not anywhere near as nervous as I was before.) I was particularly in need of partitioning because I didn't leave enough temp space on my C: drive.

It's especially nice to have PartitionMagic around when you've first unpacked a new hard drive and don't know if you've partitioned the disk into useful enough portions. This is truly a must-have!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not entirely stable... and reliable?
PM 5 isn't something to run away from, but it's most certainly not a bang for your buck. If partitioning a HD makes you nauseous, you better download the trial version to see how it works. If partitioning is something you start your day with, PM's the first thing you should think about. It partitions on the fly, no doubt to that, but it also uses terms and concepts that may be a little unfamiliar to untrained eye/ear. Not everyone will feel comfortable using it... If you know what you're doing, take it... if not, don't try this at home. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have program for serious computer users
I've used Partition Magic since version 3.0. It is a phenominal program that allows hard drive repartitioning "on-the-fly" and easy booting into different operating systems. I have a PC-DOS/Win3.1 partition and a Win98SE partition on the same hard drive. I have also had a Linux partition on the drive. You can resize partitions and convert from fat 16 to fat32 and back. Boot Magic (and the previous Boot Manager) are great to allow for easy booting into any OS that you have on your drive. Partition Magic has never given my a problem. I have never lost data. If you want to have more than one OS on your computer or to try out a new OS or upgrade, then this program is a must have. Highly reccommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does not work on Windows ME
The first message i got when loading this software was...

"Partiotion Magic does not work on the current version of windows that is installed. Please install one of the Operating Systems that are listed in the Help File."

Wait till a new release comes out that is compatible with all new operating systems from MS. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars REVIEW OF SYSTEM COMMANDER 2000
Just when V Communications has produced one of the best software applications on the market with System Commander Deluxe, they go a top the product with their latest software System Commander 2000. Believe me this is better than before.

I found this application much easier to install, mainly because it comes on cd rom. Also included in a "Restart Disk" which is labeled DISK2, DISK1 is created as an option during the installation, I recommend you create DISK1.

The setup wizard is extremely user friendly and easy to configure. In fact changes to the Startup Menu are also very easy and like System Commander Deluxe you can have over 100 OS es in the menu, NO other product even comes close to matching the power of this application.

Finally as an added bonus, Turbo Linux Workstation 4.0 was included in the package I received. V Communications has done it again and they have improved on an already great software application. I can hardly wait to see what they come up with next.

1-0 out of 5 stars System Commander has serious RAM problems
I own the System Commander 2000 version and it is not all its cracked up to be. When partitions grow too large the software can't resize the partitions. I have tried to resize partitions greater than 3.5 GB only to have the software tell me it needs more RAM. I have added more RAM, now I have 768 MB and the problem still persists. The problem isn't a need for RAM but in the software's proper access of RAM.

VCOM knows about the problem but has quietly hidden it. They readily admit the problem still exists in the new version, SC7, but are doing nothing for customers who own previous version to my knowledge.

My advice don't buy this product until they have fixed the RAM error in their product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of promises--little performance
I attempted to use this product for a dual boot of Windows ME and Windows XP (RC2). It did not work.

I thought that since XP was in beta SC2000 couldn't support it yet (despite claims on v-com's web site), so I set up a dual boot of Windows ME and RedHat Linux 7.1. It did not work.

I sent two emails to their tech support. The response (in broken english) was "that right. does not work with..."

I would have been better off flushing the ... down the ... (I could have saved four hours)

1-0 out of 5 stars Not recommanded
This application caused me more headache. I finally put it away and decide not to use it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best
I've used System Commander since the beginning. It is awesome. It makes everything very easy, but it also provides power when you need it. ... Read more

Virtual Drive emulates a CD drive, enabling you to create up to 23 file CD-ROM drives. Up to 1,000 CD-ROM cabinets can be created and run from any of the file CD-ROM drives. Once you build a Virtual Drive icon, you no longer need to physically switch to a CD-ROM drive, so the startup time of actual CD-ROM drives is eliminated. 2-0 out of 5 stars It's great . . . when it works
Got this for Christmas, and so far it's been a dud. I'm mostly disappointed with Farstone, but a little with .... too (the latest version is version 7, but here they are still selling version 6 at full price without any sign of 7 in the search results).

Turns out that Virtual Drive isn't any more sophisticated at handling copy protection than any hacker on a newsgroup. In other words, a given version may not work with newer software. In my case, 2 of the main discs I wanted to create virtual versions of (Madden 2001 and Black and White) wouldn't work in Virtual form.

I sent a lengthy e-mail to Farstone Technical Support outlining the things that I had tried to get it to work, and their response consisted of a list of things to try that was almost exactly everything that I told them I had tried already. The only solution I hadn't tried was downloading the demo copy of Version 7. I'm trying it now, but I'm not confident that even if it works I'll be willing to shell out another [amt] or so for another version of something I just bought.

What I found most annoying was that everywhere I looked on the Farstone website (even in the e-mail from their TS dept.) it's made very clear that they are always working to maintain compatibiltiy with new software and maintaining a list of software that doesn't work with the current version of VD. However, nowhere on their site could I actually find such a list; I guess sharing it with potential customers might hurt sales.

I may still use it for older games that don't have the same level of copy protection, but first I have to determine whether or not to even keep it on my computer at all. Ever since I installed it, I'm getting random crashes (blue screens of death, reboots, etc.), especially when the virtual drive manager is trying to launch at startup.

All in all, not the best utility I've ever bought.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's so good!
After I bought it and I check FarStone Website and find out there
is latest Version6.11a!So I send a email to support to ask for
uograding,he told me I need to download the trial version6.11a then inupt the serial number during the installation! Now I have
got the full Ver6.11a!And before long, when I try to install it
on Windows XP,it runs!cool!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good
I notice Virtual Drive from PC home magazine.By the instruction,I downloaded it to try.Oh!perfect software. It can support Data-CD¡¢Audio-CD¡¢DVD-ROM¡¢Video-CD¡¢Photo-CD¡¢Mixed Mode-CD,then I bought a box version. Now there is no boring yawpand don't worry about my physical cd-rom.I introduced the software to my friends, they enjoyed it too.And they say thanks for letting them know the such good software.Rating some comments here in order to make many man see the software and thanks FarStone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Virtual Drive
Virtual Drive is the best software product I have ever used on my notebook computer. It saves me so much time. I don't have to shuffle CD's; everything is at my fingertips. This is great when on a business trip. ... Read more
