2-0 out of 5 stars Very, VERY S-L-O-W
This is by far the slowest partitioning program you could buy. I only have a 2 gigabyte hard drive and I divided it up into two parts and that took almost 2 hours. Anything that you tell it to do, it takes an extraordinary amount of time. I finally got tired of it and bought Partition Magic that takes only 30 minutes to do the same thing Partition Commander did. My Recommendation is to leave this program on the shelve and get Partition Magic that does the job in a reasonable amount of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another winner from V-Communications
I teach computer information systems for a living and I tell my students you can not partition a drive with data on it. I am also highly skeptical about any product that makes the claim that you can. V-Communications has changed all that with Partition Commander.

Partition Commander is easy to install, although I highly recommend that you back up you drive first. Also included is the undo feature, which resets your drive in the event you no longer desire Partition Commander installed.

There's a host of feature with this product, from working with drive larger than 8.4GB to working with any OS, I tested this with Windows 95, 98 and Windows NT and there were no errors or problems during the install, the undo feature worked great as well.

Also Partition Commander will reclaim unused disk space, which is always a plus. The cost is minimal and the users manual is very helpful. Overall V-Communications has made the technically complex very easy for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mutli-System worries are finally over!
You work for a company with DOS, Windows 3.1, Windows 95 version A, 95 OSR2, 98 1st and 2nd editions, Windows NT, Linux, OS/2 Warp installed on many pcs, you can't afford to buy several pcs to keep up, what do you do to solve this problem?

Well if you like me, you grab a copy of Deluxe System Command install it on one pc and have all those operating systems in one location. V-Communications is the expert when it comes to multiple operating system applications and Deluxe System Commander is the perfect example.

The application allows for multiple OS-es in one partition, over 100 different operating systems, universal mouse support, password security, file management and so much more. For the price and the convenience you have an unbeatable combination.

Couple all that with another of V-Communications products, Partition Commander, and you'll be the talk of the IS department. I found this product to safe and easy to install and use. As a computer instructor, this is one product that will certainly come in handy! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Whether you need to repartition your hard drive or prep a new drive, V Communications Partition Commander makes drive maintenance a point-and-click affair, offering automated drive partitioning and a host of functions not available through most operating systems. Partition Commander 6 adds a batch of new features, including impressive support for Windows 2000, Windows Me, and Linux.

Following the tradition of its predecessors, the newest Partition Commander is a robust application--a virtual Swiss Army knife of hard drive maintenance. Various features combine to form one of the most powerful hard drive tools available anywhere. Even the non-technical crowd will get almost as much out of Partition Commander as hard-core gurus, thanks to a platoon of nifty wizards that cover actions such as reclaiming wasted hard drive space and adding a second operating system to a PC.

Those are just a couple of Partition Commander's talents. Partition Commander allows users to go far beyond the simplistic drive prep procedures included with most operating systems, adeptly performing tasks that the others don't even acknowledge as possible. It can, for example, resize FAT16/32, NTFS, and Linux partitions without disrupting the data already stored on them, add or remove partitions on working hard drives, and convert file systems from FAT16 to FAT32, or FAT16/32 to NTFS--and, unlike Windows utilities, vice versa.

Although it's extremely rare for Partition Commander to cause data loss while working its magic (even through user error), users are cautioned to back up critical data before altering partitions. Nevertheless, V Communications added BackStep Wizard, which keeps track of drive changes and allows users to undo certain actions. Unfortunately, this feature is limited by the very nature of drive partitioning: it can't undo the most destructive actions like deleting an entire partition.

Partition Commander 6 includes System Commander Personal Edition, a menu-driven interface that simplifies booting computers with two or more operating systems. The one-two punch of Partition Commander, used to add a second OS, and V Communications System Commander, used to access it, demystifies multi-boot configurations to the point where nearly anyone can enjoy them.

A must-have for technophiles and an excellent tool for anyone faced with hard drive preparation, Partition Commander would be a bargain at double its price. --Joel Durham Jr. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The only one that works always
I've tried more partition tools than I can count including Partition Magic but none works like Partition Commander. It does exactly what is says it will do, nothing more, nothing less. When I'm doing somthing as dangerous as re-partitioning, I need a tools I can trust and Partition Commander is it.

Doug Fenwick, Technical Manager, Cubic Appl, Inc

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed blessing at best
I find it ok for all partitonoing tasks and resizing. It took me some time to read it thoroughly before proceeding carefully with the tasks. Not rich in graphics unlike Partition Magic, you had to be extremely careful with what you do. Delete the wrong partiton and there's no way to retrieve it back. So I reread the instructions over but was able to execute it successfully. The BIG downside is when trying to do multiple operating system as it claims to do but it fails miserably. Forget it! All it did was overide the main OS and I had to retrieve it back with Norton Ghost.
The main thing to remember is its limitations. Use this program ONLY for partitoning and resizing hard drive. It's a good price compared with Part. magic (double the cost). But when you want to add new OS, the choice is Partiton Magic.

1-0 out of 5 stars Partition Commander Version 8
Partition commander is not worth 10$ much less 50$. I am a advanced user, and have 8 years computer experience. I have two drives (Win XP), and wanted to partition to install Linux on C:. Well, needless to say after I got the partition set up (that went ok, but the system interface is clunky), and the process is extremely slow. After installing, the boot loader (system commander) took over and ruined my dual boot settings, and after trying to restore the previous MBR, it almost destroyed the contents of my D: drive. As far as being able to go back to a previous configuration, that is a joke, and does not work unless you just want to undo the very last thing in the menu before actually physically writing to the drive. I would not recommend this product to anyone. Stay clear of Partition Commander. I have used Partition Magic before and didn't have any problems. I would recommend that instead.

1-0 out of 5 stars Did in my hard drive.
I followed the instructions and I'm not a novice. This program hung on the last step in the procedure and rendered my data useless. Rewrote all the file names to garbage dot garbage and random file sizes up to impossible. All I can say is I'm glad I backed up and I'm upset losing a weeks worth of time just getting running again from trying to save lost data. I'll never have my computer back the way it was.

1-0 out of 5 stars Still trying to recover
I'm running Win ME and have a C and a D hard drive. I did back up the C drive because it has most all of the OS stuff and it was the only drive I wanted to partation. I tryed installing the software three time within Windows and it stopped at the point of retriving the system files. So I rebotted to DOS with the reboot disk I made and tried to just partation the C drive. It took all my files on the C drive and made one partation of which I couldn't get into, I could copy it to a free space on another drive so I picked D drive. I then had a partation on C drive that I couldn't get into and a copy on the D drive of the C partation of which I still couldn't get into and all the file on the D drive were now in their own partation of which I couldn't get into. I had to reformat both drives and restore the C drive from the backup and I'm still trying to restore what I had on the D drive ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for W98SE, don't ask it to move an NTFS XP partition
Do not use for Windows XP, Home or Pro. It works _GREAT_ in my experience for W98SE; excellent alternative to Norton Ghost for partition image management / archival & partition management. I don't know if it can handle MS-setup dual-boot arrangements (i.e. XP / W98SE boot choice), but I do know it got stuck looking for an NT operating system in the closing steps of moving my XP Pro's NTFS partition in the disk so I could expand it enough to defrag it (and then back up its image via DriveWorks). De-selecting some options I hadn't been aware of may have helped, I don't know. I had to reboot, and my XP Pro / W98SE (for backup duty) dual-boot machine became an unbootable steel-cased doorstop. I didn't lose any files though, and after reinstalling XP Pro & all my software, I am now able to write this while finding a replacement for this software. It's been _EXCELLENT_ for W98SE use for me for a couple years now, but it could _Not_ handle moving an XP-loaded NTFS partition at least with the default option selections.

3-0 out of 5 stars Driveworks is not that bad...
If you use Win Nt, 2K, XP with NTFS partition, you better not to try this driveworks. I tried it on my workstation that has an Adaptec RAID and Win Nt on it, and it didn't work.

But, this driveworks work fine on my laptop which has a Windows ME with FAT32 on it. I can resize the partition without destroying it, image the partition, and had succesfully restored the partition from that image.

So my complains:
- VCom, please make this product works with RAID card and better handling with NTFS
- It took almost 2 hours to make an image of 4GB partition!! (on a pentium III 750Mhz.. bleh)

Otherwise, this software might be worthful for anyone who use FAT/FAT32.

1-0 out of 5 stars Oh My [goodness!]
The Same (VERY CLOSE) thing happened to ME.

This is a joke it ruined my computer I acually broke a 69.95$ CD in half out of complete frustration.

I'm sure there will be a few people in the future who simply and luckily performed a simple partition with no IMPORTANT info on thier drive, and give it credit BUT PLEASE !! anyone whom this also happened to, PLEASE WRITE EVEN A 10 letter review and tell people what you think OH [please]. All my digital family photos and video of my 10 month old twins gone because of a bad interface and programing FOR 70$

BLAH! The better business bureau will get a complaint from me

2-0 out of 5 stars My truth told , What a waste of 3 days and 70$. A disgrace
Well here you have it,

3 Days of Frustration, failed solution after failed solution, and .... the death via slaying of a 70$ program. I purchased this say 4 months prior and from day one problems. To start with I have an All-in-Wonder Radeon video card, 200$+ , and I experienced a split screen problem with it no matter if you ran it from WINDOWS 2000 PRO or Booting from it. "The Manufacturers" web site stated that there was no fix for this problem. A split screen to me after spending 70 bucks was annoying but all together bearable and went on and partition my RAID array with it.

Now Dec. 28,01 I purchased a WD 80 GIG HD, and 2 more 60 Gig Maxtors to backup my 52 Gigs of MP3's as the took 2 years to compile. To make a long story short I had Win 2000 on my RAID and needed to remove it, install on the 80 Gig, and move Win 2000 and set up a "0+1" Stripe plus Span on the RAID.

Yada Yada and so on. This product has a built in recovery feature JUST in case a power failure occurs during an operation. No the power never went out, Just the 70$ CD costing no more than .03 cents to V Com Oh and the 40$ profit , trust me, no research and development went on here. I backed up my windows directory and partition my RAID and my new 80 Gig and ended up in a "insert recovery disk 2 .....blah blah you are now safe to restart" cycle for an hour.

Ok I could at this point go on for hours cursing, bottom line I , an intelligent (no arrogance intended) person had NO, NONE, NADA, Not a choice but toto reformat everything, fight with WIN 2000 to recognize my RAID as C:......... again BLAH

The interface had promise but the code hade no intention on making the previous work. A damned shame V Com

DO NOT. PLEASE DO NOT. By this unless you love and I mean LOVE stress

V Com should be ashamed

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Experience with Drive Works
I have just had a horrific experience with your product DriveWorks.

I run Windows 2000 and had decided that I needed a good program to back up my whole harddrive in the event of a crash. I found DriveWorks.

My problem started when I realized (after purchase) that nothing would load on my computer except AutoSave, so I installed it. In fact I installed and uninstalled it three times because everytime I installed it, it crashed my computer right before it would end the booting up process. I thought that this program was not the main reason I purchased the whole thing so I could live with it not working.

Since I was running Win2000 the instructions said the other programs would only work from the CD, so I rebooted with the floppy and went to the CD to try to run Image Commander to backup my harddrive. (Then I read that it would not backup straight to CD. Your box says, "This image is a compressed file that can be easily saved to a CD." I guess you just forgot to mention that you can only save it to CD AFTER you save it to a harddrive. What if you don't have enough space on your harddrive to put the backup file on???) After booting up with the CD it told me that the only way the program would backup FAT32 files was if it was installed on the harddrive, yet I couldn't install it because I was running Windows 2000. I was really beginning to believe I had purchased a joke. If only I had...

When I purchased the program I had also been looking for a disk partiting program like Partition Magic. Since I didn't find it at Office Max I was glad when DriveWorks had Partition Commander. I proceeded to open that program... finally a program that I could open! I wished I hadn't been able to. While looking at the options, never giving any command to actually do changes... my WHOLE harddrive got instantly deleted!!! There was no "Are you sure?" "All your data will be deleted" warnings or anything like it. It was just gone! The very thing I had feared had just happened to me, but the worse thing was that it was at the hands of the program I had purchased to help me prepare for such a catastrophe! I can't tell you the anger I felt.
Buy at own risk! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast, Efficient, Simple & Clean
Prior I used both the native defrag in windows and Norton Speed Disk. I had no problem with either program but noticed no improvement in the performance of my machine. I used the trial version of Perfect Disk for 4 days before buying it. I found the interface simple, clean and easy to use. Has a great scheduler built in. Its Microsoft certified for Windows 2000 a big seller in my opinion, give's me a secure feeling that my data isnt going to be messed up by defragging. But what really sold me is my system performance improved, it cut my boot time by 20 seconds. I highly recommend this software.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prior User of Norton SpeedDisk

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome. And, better yet, it even works
This product does what is otherwise impossible: shrinks a partition without disturbing the data therein. Also it works very fast! It takes just a minute or two to shrink or expand a partition.

It has always worked for me. If you wonder why you would need this software, don't worry about it. If you need it, believe me, you know it. And when you need it, this is the only program on earth that will do this work.

When you need it and it works it is AWESOME!

Here's an example:
Say you have a teaching lab with 8 computers. You want to use Power Quest Drive Image to create a clone of the hard disk on computer #1 on CD. Then every Friday night after class you can restore the image on all 8 computers and Monday morning all your computers are fresh and ready, regardless of what last week's students did.
Computer #1 has a 100 GB hard drive in a single partition, but only 1GB is actually in use. The rest is free space. Since Drive Image backs up a partition at a time, you will need enough CDs to hold 100GB of compressed data, even though most of it will just be zeros. That might take you many CDs. What you need is a way to shrink the partition size down to just the 1GB in use. Conventional tools will not allow you to do this....they erase all the data in the partition if you shrink it. That kills you! That forces you to back up all the data to another hard drive, delete the partition, recreate the partition to the 1GB size, then format the partition, then reload the data from the spare hard drive, if possible, then create your Drive Image CD, and then go to through the whole process again to expand the partition back. This could take all day.

With Partition Magic, you just insert a diskette and about two minutes later you are done shrinking the partition to the needed size! Snap your image CD and then fire up Partition Magic again and in another two minutes the partition is back where it started! With this technology available doing it the old way makes about as much sense as using a Radio Shack cassette tape player for data storage on your IBM-PC instead of a hard drive.

The former owner of this program, Power Quest, was granted several patents on this technique. Check it out at www.uspto.gov - it's fascinating reading. Paraphrasing their words: obviously this function is not easy since it took 15 years from the introduction of the IBM-PC for someone to invent it.

It was back in 1995 that PartitionMagic first appeared on thescene, at a time when the idea of partitioning a hard drive intoseveral logical drives was only of interest to IT professionals. Muchhas changed since then, and with hard drives reaching ever-increasingproportions, the use of partitions makes sense for all but the completenovice PC user. However, it's not just for organization of drive spacethat PartitionMagic is useful. Having separate partitions for backups,or for running multiple operating systems on a single machine, is agood idea, if not essential, and PartitionMagic is an ideal tool forassisting you in these tasks.

All the necessary tools are present, as they were in previousincarnations, including BootMagic, which allows you to manage multipleoperating systems and create and resize partitions without destroyingdata. However, a number of useful additions have found their way intothis new release. Most noticeable amongst them is support for bothWindows Me and Windows 2000. The interface has been cleaned up and isnow more intuitive, incorporating an Explorer-style tree view ofpartitions. A new wizard makes it simple to copy partitions, and younow have the ability to split FAT and FAT32 partitions. You can evenundelete partitions, provided that the previously allocated spacehasn't been overwritten.
