5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome. And, better yet, it even works.
This product does what is otherwise impossible: shrinks a partition without disturbing the data therein.
Also it works very fast! It takes just a minute or two to shrink or expand a partition.

It has always worked for me. If you wonder why you would need this software, don't worry about it. If you need it, you know it. And when you need it, this is the only program on earth that will do this work.
When you need it and it works it is AWESOME!

    Here's an example:
Say you have a teaching lab with 8 computers. You want to use Power Quest Drive Image to create a clone of the hard disk on computer #1 on CD. Then every Friday night after class you can restore the image on all 8 computers and Monday morning all your computers are fresh and ready, regardless of what last week's students did.

Computer #1 has a 100 GB hard drive in a single partition, but only 1GB is actually in use. The rest is free space. Since Drive Image backs up a partition at a time, you will need enough CDs to hold 100GB of compressed data, even though most of it will just be zeros. That might take you many CDs. What you need is a way to shrink the partition size down to just the 1GB in use. Conventional tools will not allow you to do this....they erase all the data in the partition if you shrink it. That kills you! That forces you to back up all the data to another hard drive, delete the partition, recreate the partition to the 1GB size, then format the partition, then reload the data from the spare hard drive, if possible, then create your Drive Image CD, and then go to through the whole process again to expand the partition back. This could take all day.

With Partition Magic, you just insert a diskette and about two minutes later you are done shrinking the partition to the needed size! Snap your image CD and then fire up Partition Magic again and in another two minutes the partition is back where it started! With this technology available doing it the old way makes about as much sense as using a Radio Shack cassette tape player for data storage on your IBM-PC instead of a hard drive.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works!
This software is great. I have successfully tested Dos 6.22, Windows 3.0, several versions of Linux (Red Hat and Suse), Windows 95 and Windows NT.
I agree with other reviewers that it can be used for recreational purpouses. My case is about retro-ware and retro-gaming. I have to admit that sound emulation is a little tricky for some old games, but overall the product is excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 Rocks
This is one of the best emulation software out there in the market. It is so much EASYER to use than VMWare Workstation 4x. You dont have to set up the cd drives or the floppy drives. I think that this is a much better software for beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for creating CCNP or MCSE 2003 labs...
Awesome product, I was previously using Partition Magic 8.0, which works, but you have to reboot and go into your other operating systems. I can now seamlessly boot from one operating system to another, using my sniffer, tftp server, ftp server, protocol generator, etc. you see where I'm going. This along with some free utilities for generating UDP and TCP floods is a great addition for training. Highly recommended!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars I weighed the options.
I compared VMWare 4.0.5 and Virtual PC 2004 (VPC) side-by-side for a couple of weeks and ultimately decided on VPC for it's affordability, larger memory support, and standard S3 Trio video card emulation which greatly improved the guest OS graphics experience (especially for non-Microsoft OSes). I installed multiple instances of Linux (Redhat and Trustix) and they ran surprisingly well though obviously slower than on a dedicated machine. But, for setting-up a multi-network virtual lab where "how" it works was more important to me than "how fast" it was perfect. Using VPC I was easily able to setup a multi-network virtual lab with several routers, DHCP servers, and DNS servers to iron out some complex interaction scenarios.

MS virtual hardware support is not as robust as VMWare however as it seems that you are limited to emulating (4) IDE drives. This wasn't a serious hindrance to me but should be considered.

As of 3/5/2004 MS was offering a 45 day evaluation download from the VPC product page. I heartily recommend this product.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very cool!
I initially approached this product with one raised eyebrow, however after putting it through the works I can say I am quite pleased with it.

At 1/3 the cost of VMWare's product, this piece of software does the job nicely.

Its marketed mainly as being useful for business and training applications, however I'm willing the speculate that the majority of this product's use will simply be for fun "playgrounds". :-)

I pulled out my old OS/2 and Win 3.11 boxes that have been collecting dust and brought them to life on VPC. Very cool.

Didn't try Linux on it, but it's reported to work. I wouldn't want to run Linux day-to-day on it anyhow, I'll just stick to using partitions and allowing Linux to get full use of computer resources.

At the least, its very cool (and very fun!) to have DOS/Win3.11 under XP. I've now had a reason to break out all my old DOS/Win 3.11 games again. :-) ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars ACRONIS TRUE IMAGE 8.0 CAVEAT
According to the information on the box when you buy it some of the "Supported Hardware" follows:
    CD-R / CD-RW
    DVD-R / DVD-RW
    DVD+R / DVD+RW
I purchased the software, installed it (The installation went off without a hitch)and attempted to:
    A) Create a bootable DVD using the software and
    B) Image my drive for back-up
Well both A + B created error messages and would not perform the functions for which I purchased the software.I should mention that I have a brand new Dell desktop computer with a 120GB Maxtor internal HD, 2GB of RAM memory, a Plextor DVD burner and a Sony DVD ROM drive. In orther words this baby was born to Rock!I must stipulate that 99.99% of the software that I purchase works the first time right out of the box because I very carefully read the minimum system requirements, which OS the software supports and the supported hardware. If it does not work the first time right of the box then I return it and get a refund.Since this was the case here I did return the software to CompUSA and got a refund.I also e-mailed Acronis regarding the error messages. They did reply about two days later and the cause of the error messages was a bit of a shocker: "Acronis True Image 8.0 does not support DVD-R!"EVEN THOUGH IT STATES RIGHT ON THE BOX THAT IT DOES SUPPORT IT!My gut feeling is if Acronis screws up something this basic then what other flaws will I find in this program.I am a computer novice so the programs that I purchase must be bullit proof and when it comes to disk imaging I find there are no bullit proof programs.I am thinking of going with a simple file back up program that I can back-up to DVDs.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great BACKUP solution
Although I've been a big supporter and user of Norton (Symantec) products since way back to 1988, specialized utilities like disk imaging and partitioning have not been well implemented by Peter Norton. The developers at Acronis have disk imaging down. This application works beautifully and takes a "snapshot" of your entire hard drive in no time. This makes an excellent backup solution, so that you don't just end up backing up your "My Documents" folder (and all those mp3s and pictures you have).By taking a disk image, you capture all those little settings you have made, so that if anything goes wrong with your current hard drive, you can simply pop in a new hard drive, boot up to the rescue media boot CD that Acronis True Image can create for you and bingo! You're back in business. This is a top-notch piece of software and I would highly recommend it for expert or novice users alike.

1-0 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me
I installed this product and afterward got the blue screen of death.I emailed their support they were very responsive and helpfull. But it was becoming to much of a chore to fix, never got it to work.I ended up uninstalling it, had to run their uninstall then edit the registry to remove it there then fdisk the master boot record.I have used image cast at work for years imaging over a hundred computers. It installs and works a lot better.Only problem you have to buy a 10-user license at around 25.00 each.I couldn't recommend true image to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now that Symantec has destroyed Powerquest products...
Now that Symantec has bought Powerquest and succeeded in destroying their product line (PowerQuest Drive Image replaced with the inferior Norton Ghost, and Powerquest Partition Magic 8.x crippled with "activation" and other annoying anti-piracy measures), Acronis TrueImage becomes the best option out there.

I'm using an earlier release, not 8.0, but I can recommend it wholeheartedly. A great product, well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well designed and well working product
I tried both, norton ghost 9.0 and R-driveimage 2 first but those two did not work well at all. Ghost 9.0 could not see my external USB drive. R-driveimage 2 trialversion crashed a couple times.
Acronis trialversion worked right away. It can be used to image a drive while windows is running(!) and the bootable recovery CD worked right away. It could see all my drives. A good experience for a change! I recommend this productly strongly. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Symanted is the WORST IN SERVICE OUT THERE!!!!
I was not able to boot my G4 Laptop from my Norton System Works 3.0. According to the company website I had to get a new disk. I called for the first time this past Wednesday. After better than 30 minutes on hold I finally got a customer service person who told me I needed permission from TECH SUPPORT and that they were closing early sorry. On Thursday I called Tech Support and after 3 rude Tech Peopl finnally someone gave me an order number to give to the Customer Service people. It is now Friday and I have yet to get a Customer Service person on again.

There is no prompt for people who need a disk shipped. There is no Mac area choice so I have to go through the General Help menu. NO ONE COMES TO THE PHONE! I pity those that have to deal with this company.

They should turnt their anti-virus scan on themselves and eliminate the management structure of this company. A more detailed review of my experience can be found onmy blog... http://elitistmutt.blogspot.com/ ...

    Thank you,

1-0 out of 5 stars Even Symantec is giving up on this one!
Symantec had tons of problems with Norton Utilities 8, which is part of Systemwroks 3. It isn't compatible with OS X 10.3 and has many problems with earlier systems. See Macfixit, Macintouch, or other news sources for evidence. Now Symantec announced that they are discontinuing development of everything but antivirus and network security products for the Mac. Don't buy broken software from a company who refuses to fix it. Buy DiskWarrior instead. ... Read more

    Amazon.com Review

PartitionMagic is a lot more these days than a simple partitioning tool for hard drives. In fact, PartitionMagic 8.0 can repartition your hard drive, set up multiple operating systems, and even perform scheduled backups to protect your data.

The core program, which can be run from Windows or in DOS mode directly from a boot floppy, enables you to change the size of existing partitions, create new partitions, merge two partitions into one, and more. This is all achieved in a logical and straightforward way, using a new group of wizards and a number of safety checks to make sure you do what you intended.

Any of the changes you make occur without disturbing any data you already have on your hard drive. The program can handle IDE and SCSI hard drives, and this version adds external drives linked to USB 2.0 or FireWire ports. However, you will now need quite a bit of memory on your PC to run the program--128 MB in Windows XP, for example.

BootMagic is bundled with PartitionMagic 8.0, and is a well-featured boot manager that enables you to install several different operating systems on your PC and switch between them at startup.

Overall, PartitionMagic is a safe and effective way to protect your data and improve the efficiency of your PC. --Simon Williams, Amazon.co.uk ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!
I don't know why I keep hearing all these negative reviews complaining that the software doesn't work under Windows XP. I just bought a new dell 8300 with a 120GB hard drive, running Windows XP Pro. I was on the verge of completely reformating my hard drive so I could properly partition it. I was annoyed that I would have to spend hours reinstalling drivers and software, and I knew that my computer would never be the same as when it arrived here. Luckily, I spoke to one of my friends and he recommended PartitionMagic 8.0. After looking into the product, I almost didn't buy it because of the negative reviews. However, I decided to go for it anyway and I got the product. After I installed it, I installed the upgrade patch from their website. After watching the flash tutorial and using some of the help files, I knew exactly what to do. The program took me step by step through the process, showing me the changes that would occur once I gave it the go ahead. So, I resized my C Drive to 20gb, added a 1.5GB primary partition in front of it for my swap file, and divided the remaining space into two logical drives around 43gb in size. Then I crossed my fingers, clicked okay and the program restarted the computer to make the changes. About 30 minutes later, the process was done and I had no problems with it at all. Now I happily have all the partitions I wanted and I can begin working with the computer. Shame on Microsoft for not having a built in utility that does all that Partition Magic can do. Anyway, I highly recommened this program if you want to partition your hard drive without losing any of the data on it! This is a must for Windows XP users. Eventually, I'll probably use this software to add Linux also.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great product for people with DISK EXPERIENCE!
I've had great luck with PartitionMagic 7.0 on both Windows 2000 and Windows XP Professional. But after reading several negative reviews of PartitionMagic 8.0 with XP, I was a little nervous about buying and using it on my new PC.

This product works! This past weekend I partitioned my brand new Dell PC (Dimension 8300) flawlessly. My new Dell has the 2 SATA drives with the Promise card configured for RAID-1 (hardware mirrored). And who wants a 120GB "C-drive"?

The product worked just as advertised!

The product will usually warn you if you are about to do something catastrophic, but it isn't completely "novice proof". The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars is that PowerQuest (or Symantec, or whomever owns it now) doesn't make the product easy to use for those wanting multiple booting options - which is one of the things they claim on the box.

Making a single PC run multiple operating systems booting from different partitions SHOULD be a challenge, and it is. This product will make multi-booting easier, but don't expect it to make it simple. If this is your goal - (1) do your homework before you begin, and (2) backup everything you can't afford to lose!

4-0 out of 5 stars just get the patches and it works wonders
My linux partition recently ran out of space, so I decided to resize my dos (Win XP) partition and add space to the linux partition. I got PM8.0, and at first was very distressed to find out that PM did not work, giving an Error 1513. The next morning, I called the software sales at the symantec site and asked about this error. They forwarded me to a tech line (free) who forwarded me to another tech line (not free). I talked with the guy, told him the problem, told him the link for the patch at their web site was broken (google "Error 1513 Partition Magic" to get to the symantec error listing with patches), and within a couple minutes, he sent me an updated link to the patch (for FREE). I installed the patch, and was able to resize the partitions without a hitch (no data lost). The fact that Microsoft changed file formats (giving Error 1513) is not something PM has any control over, and they have provided the patches...

    1-0 out of 5 stars PartitionMagic 8.0
This has to be about the worst thing I ever did to my computer in all my cyber history. I have a dual-boot system--Mandrake Linux and Windows 2000--and I suddenly needed to expand my C drive in Win 2000 in order to install a new program.

I bought PowerQuest PartitionMagic for the purpose, and then spent a frustrating night--till after 4:00 a.m., trying to get it installed and working. First off, it destroyed the first mount point for my Linux. After I got that fixed, and after several more problems, it took more than two hours to analyze and reconfigure about 6 Gb on my 28 Gb E partition. Except it didn't finish. Rather, it gave me an exception dump to the floppy with instructions to contact PowerQuest Technical support. Except PowerQuest doesn't exist any more. Symantec claims to be handling it. But Symantec wanted to charge me another $30 for technical help, on top of the $70 I just paid for the program the night before. I finally talked them out of that, on grounds I just wanted to know how to back out of the whole thing without wreaking even more damage, but the "help" they offered wasn't any help at all. I now have a partially crippled system until I can get rid of the PartitionMagic and repair the damage it did. I am filing with Symantec for a refund, and I hope never to have to deal with anything from PowerQuest/Symantec again in my life.

The irony of it is that I had a copy of SystemCommander v.7, buried since about two years. Just didn't take the time to hunt for it. I have used SystemCommander successfully for years, through a progression of upgrades. It does in five minutes what PartitionMagic couldn't do in more than two hours. And it has a backup key which allows you to safely undo any problems or mistakes back to a previous condition. By contrast, PartitionMagic gives you a warning that once you hit the "Apply" button, you're stuck with it. And if anything goes wrong you have to go into the Registry to do a manual repair--with all the problems and hazards that entails. SC also handles every concievable OS, where I can't see that PQ handles more than the most common ones. And the README.TXT file for PQ lists a whole string of things it can't do even in Win 2000 and XP.

My advice to anyone thinking of buying PartitionMagic ---- Don't. Buy SystemCommander instead. It doesn't have as pretty an interface, and it sometimes makes you think the process through, but it does the job with speed and safety. And the Tech people are MUCH nicer to work with. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money - don't buy
I bought in order to organize my hard drive by creating a few logical partitions on a 120 gig drive. I had used an earlier version for my Win 98 machine and it worked fine.

This should be a relatively simple operation and one that the designers should have easily anticipated. In this era of large drives this has to be the primary reason for buying it. I am sure the software can do this, it is just not clear how.

I had the following problems. It would not recognize my cordless mouse so I had to tab through menus. Even then it would not allow me to cut 80 gig off my C drive and use it to create a D drive

It was a waste of money and it is too late to return it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Saved my PC
After comparing various partition software to help correct issues with my PC, I chose to use V-Com's Partition Commander 8.0. During the initial partioning of the hard drive, I suffered a system crash (NOT Partition Commander's fault). When the system was rebooted my 40GB hard drive was now 20GB. Customer support provided prompt e-mail support and I was able to save both the data and the hard drive space. They provided accurate and step-by-step responses that helped save my PC. When the emergency was over, the product worked as designed and properly repartitioned the drive. I am very happy about this product and did not experience any problems with this product or customer support.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good product
I purchased PC 8 as its blurb said it was capable of converting Dynamic disks to Basic disks. This it did OK, but when I attempted to repartition a drive with Win XP freshly installed, it crashed while attempting to verify the repartitioned disk. Have not been able to recover thus far-- very disappointing1

1-0 out of 5 stars not any good
The product installed ok. but after I added more memory to my C: drive,it would not let me boot up my OS. I call there tech suport
and after being on the phone for almost an hour, being put on hold at times they could not figure out the problem.I think I going to have to use the recovery disk which means I must start all over, It's just not worth it. I am asking for my money back just for all the time I have wasted with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Minor gripes
I purchased Partition Commander 8 not knowing what to expect. Actually have been quite pleased with it. It gave me the opportunity to install a new, larger harddrive, copy all of my first drive to the new one, partition both, experiment some, all without any loss of data or major problems. The only complaint that I have is that the manual doesn't explain some things as well as I would like and I have not accomplished a couple of things I hope to do. For one, I am running Windows XP and want to put Windows 98 and possibly Windows 95 in partitions for an unrelated project. I haven't installed either of them as of yet because it doesn't explain if it is going to an empty partition or is going to overwrite my present OS and files. I do have them copied to the second hard drive and will not lose them if it should, but could use some confirmation as to where it is going. All in all though, I am rating the program highly. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars It is cheap, but you get what you pay for.
I purchased disk commander to be installed on my Windows XP machines with NTFS partitions. The software immediatly will hide any non-booting partitions from Windows, that are not recoverabe via Windows XP.

Thus I lost a drive and all its data. Luckily, I had made boot disk number 2 and was able to get it back. Note, during this process, I ran out and bought Partition Magic that doesnt have these hokie issues.

ANyway, getting the drive back was not as easy as this sounds, since the software didnt tell me it was hiding a partition, it took me a day or so of panic to figure out what the software did.

I dont recommend this to anyone that are using Multiple NTFS partitions. In fact, I have 'circular filed' this app and now use partition magic.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's good, but it needs work...
I purchased System Commander 7 in hopes of studying (trying out) RedHat Linux 8 while running my normal WinXP. After the installation, the ride was a little bumpy; several restarts before the freezing stopped. After that, everything worked great for both RH8 and WinXP. Then I decided to run Norton Speed Disk on my WinXP partition (NTFS). After I finished, I rebooted and boom, the MBR was ruined. Apparently, Norton had moved a critical file belonging to SC7 and rendered my XP partition toast. I used the XP recovery utility with fixmbr and fixboot, but the partition would never boot again. I removed the partition, and made a new one... installing XP on top plus SC7. Now everything is working normal again. However, in the end I had data loss (most of what I recovered). Luckily, most of my files run off another independent drive.

All in all, I valued the chance to run Linux in dual boot with XP and just had to put up with the little quirks of SC7 that caused me problems. Number one rule, backup is HIGHLY recommended when using SC7 (and they are not kidding). :)

5-0 out of 5 stars This is great!
I have tried similar products, but this one can handle any kind of setup, old or new - EIDE or SCSI drives - and more. It has very good documentation and is easy to use. I am running four O/Ss on my machine and the partition manager is very reliable and easy to understand. If you are a tinkerer, like I am, you will love this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Veteran
This is another veteran of PC utilities although this one is not really a necessity unless you need to test other operating systems and only have one PC. It performs as advertised but configuring and installing the other OS's may not be as straighforward and easy for some.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get a clue.
This is a good product. I have seen negative reviews concerning this product on this site, but, unfortunately they are written by people who don't know what they're doing. Therefore the reviews are misleading, to say the least.
Referring to the two negative reviews I've seen: 1)If anyone ever decides to partition their hard drive without creating a backup first is asking for BIG trouble - sooner or later.
2)If you are trying to do ANYTHING with Windows 98, you need to wake up and smell the new millenium. GET A CLUE. Your inexperience has nothing to do with the quality of a product. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Virtual Drive
I bought this program to run my daughters games so she wouldn't scratch her cd's. This is Awesome...It works Great...All the games I loaded run fine. After reading others reviews I guess it's just in what you're trying to load. For a parent who wants to save $$$ and not replace cd's this works great for my house!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Suprise ending
Perhaps I don't read the fine print often enough, but I was surprised one day recently that what I purchased was essentially a subscription for a year to this service. I rebuilt my OS, installed the application, and found that updates were not available because I had purchased it over a year ago. This rendered most of my virtual CD's useless. As reported in other reviews, my experience is that farstone ignores requests for assistance. Bottom line: good product (worked well for a year), bad customer support, sneaky pricing structure.

1-0 out of 5 stars Problem with playing games from Virtual Image.
I bought this program from Amazon and I can't play my games while mounting a "Fake" cd into the virtual drive. I have this problem with my CD and I don't have the money to buy a new one. Anyway I barrowed a CD-om from my friend and created a Image using this program. Just like it says: Play any game from CD-ROM at hard drive speed. And it did't work it say insert your original cd and not a backup cd. What do I do wrong I don't get it. Please help me with this problem. I feel tricked about this program it does not fullfill what it said it would. Please E-mail me if you know where the problem is. I have tried "Intelligt copy" and "ordinary copy" and it still don't work.

1-0 out of 5 stars You are on your own with this one.
If it works for you, it's great. But if you have any problems you will never hear a word from FarStone support. I find this very irresponsible and I would recommend everyone to run away from Farstone products. Their web page crashes when you submit a bug report and they never return support emails. I've sent several now. My copy used to work, now it's dead and useless to me. Too bad FarStone isn't putting more budget into their support. They could have had a great product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Virtual Drive 7.0
Although Farstone claim that this software will run most games as virtual CD's (VCD's), I've found that it doesn't work as advertised. With several of my latest games,E.G. Enter the Matrix, IGI2 etc. either they will not run from VCD's, or they cannot be "built" as VCD's.

All attempts to get an answer from Farstone's tech support have gone unanwered. And attempts to E-mail Farstone get "bounced" by their server! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great idea especially for a laptop users
I read about this program before but it wasn't until I tried a demo copy that I realized how convenient this program is. This program is awesome, it allowed me to load games and apps software on my laptop without having to carry the disk. I haven't tried a dvd yet. If frees up your cd rom drive and saves power on laptops due to not having to run the cd rom drive. This program takes up little hd space and it shows up as and works like a actual drive. With this program you can have several extra cd rom drives on your computer. This program really works as promised and it works on xp, which I'm using even though it doesn't say. I installed and uninstalled the software and have no problems on my computer. This is one of those rare programs that no one knows about unless you own v-com software. Make sure you load this software first before you install any of the software you intend to use. It will not work on software thats already installed. Make sure you eject the disk that you are no longer using because it will continue to run, check your task manager it will show this. I highly recommend this program for pc's user's and especially laptop users who do not want to carry extra bulk and weight around.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful!
This is a very useful program, one of the best I've ever owned. If you're sick of programs that require the CD to be inserted before you can run them, this software is for you! I copied a 7-CD program to my computer (in compressed form, to save hard drive space), and now I can run the whole thing without loading a single CD. And this program was copy-protected! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars This is a demo version only
I purchased the software and tried to do the upgrade but it didn't work. When I reached the final screen that has the button "proceed" which must be clicked. This button was shaded so clicking on it does not work. I contacted the company "Acronis" by email and they said that I bought a "demo" copy and that is why the "proceed" button was shaded. My only interpretation is that shoppers will pay full price for a demo software that doesn't work instead of an official one. If you cannot buy the official copy on Amazon then where in the world will you be able to buy it? Is there an official copy anyway?

Save your money and sanity, look for other packages. I intend to return the software and explain what happened to Amazon customer support. ... Read more
