There are real problems "out there." But at the same time, I think balance and prudence are called for. So, I continue to use the internet. I surf, and I send email. I purchase over the internet. And I "do" wireless. But, I also set up passwords, and I use OS X's default firewall. And I think (without any real confirmation) that I am fairly safe from prying eyes... With this all in mind, I looked at Symantec's Internet Security 3.0 with interest. This is a collection of three (plus) programs which helps with (surprise!) your internet security. The three programs are AntiVirus, Personal Firewall, and Privacy Control. In addition (the plus, referenced above), Alladin iClean is included. I'll discuss AntiVirus more at the end of this review. I was impressed with the detail in the enclosed user manual, plus I like that the manual is fully available as a postscript file (.pdf) which means its more referable when I'm on the road. The install was smooth and easy. Personal Firewall seems to do a good job. At least, once started, I checked it against its self checks, and all reported adequate. I am no expert, but OS X has a firewall installed in 10.3 (under System Preferences / Sharing.) I don't know if one is better than the other; only than one comes installed with the system software, and one comes as part of Symantec's software suite. I haven't a good idea of how to tell the strengths of the firewalls themselves, so I compared preferences and options. In general both are similar in ease of set-up and usage. I like the access to the System Preferences, where as to get to Symantec's I am required to start the software application, so this is a minor downside. Privacy Control was much less "obviously" useful. I use Safari's built in add-blocker, and I trust its privacy security with that "little lock" icon, I generally believe my data transfers to be safe. And I didn't see any benefit to Symantec's version, other than if you might be using an "older" or less capable internet browser. I like the idea of Alladin iClean, in the ability to "scrub" data from browser records. And I might recommend this be part of a business or multi-use computer, where a general user account is enabled. However, I didn't see this as a benefit to the average home user. Finally, Symantec's AntiVirus ran smoothly and efficiently. I believe its updates are as good as others (since I've read that most antivirus information is shared and there isn't a benefit of one type or another, as long as you are routinely running a check for viruses.) But once again, my current set-up and use seem to be part of the issue here. I signed up for a .mac account when I acquired my new powerbook, and as one of the benefits, I use Virex 7 (included as one of .mac's account benefits.) And so, I feel my money was much better spent on .mac, with Virex 7 included, rather than on Symantec's Internet Security 3.0 software. This is a good set of software, and if you don't have a collection of programs similar, I highly recommend you consider the suite. However, weigh the price when you are deciding. I found the price a bit steep for what I got out of the software.

The tool is very well execute. Although you may miss some of Microsoft's ease-of-use features, it is well organized and, at many things, better than MS frontpage. It also comes with a real manual instead of the lame manual-let that MSFP comes with (plan on paying another $40+ for a decent MSFP manual if you buy that tool.) I've come across a few crashes but overall, the tool is quite stable for a *.0 rev. I purchased this tool in order to create a school website that would be hosted on a server without MSFP extensions. I liked it so much that I switched my home page to it and have no plans to ever use MSFP again. If you want more power with a tad less ease of use than MSFP and at a much better price, this is the tool get. Marc
Namo is the best of both worlds.

This McAfee Antispyware program is very simple to use and it seems to work well. You can open up the program's display properties anytime and monitor its activity and you will see it working as it scans web pages in real time as you browse using Internet Explorer. You can also schedule system wide scans and it has customizable controls so you can enable trusted spyware or adware programs not to be blocked. The biggest drawback is that it does not automatically detect and remove tracking cookies. Its main advantage is realtime scanning and blocking of spyware and adware. Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware (basic) are both free to download and work very well also however those programs do not auto update and they don't do essential real time scanning to stop the spyware before it infects your computer. Spybot does have an immunize feature that helps block a pre-set number of common spyware/adware programs but this list is static while McAfee's program uses dynamic scanning with the latest automatically updated spyware/adware detections. I would recommend you use all three antispyware programs. Download Spybot and Ad-Aware for free and also install McAfee Antispyware 2005 for real time scanning. In this age of spyware, adware, trojan horses, tracking cookies etc. you can't be too safe. I would also recommend a good firewall like Zone Alarm 4.x or the even more feature rich Zone Alarm Pro 4.x ( Zone Alarm 4 with internet cookie, popup, and privacy controls) . Use a good Antivirus program such as McAfee 2004, Norton 2003, PC-Cillin 2004, or Kaspersky. One more highly rated antispyware program you might want to look at is Webroot's SpySweeper which has all the realtime scanning features of McAfee along with tracking cookie detection. SpySweeper is a seasoned antispyware program known to have one of the highest spyware/adware/tracking-cookie detection rates among all the anti-spyware programs. Although the McAfee Antispyware 2005 is still relatively new to the antispyware game compared to other programs, I would expect this recently released McAfee software to continue to improve this year as this program auto-updates itself with more advanced features and enhanced spyware detections. ... Training this software takes quite a long time; a few hours if you want to get maximum performance. I actually wouldn't mind so much, except that you need to retrain it every time you buy a new microphone or work in an environment with a different sound level. For me, this has meant having to train the software several times. Reading the provided material so the software can sample your voice is actually kind of fun, but after you've done it a few times, it is exceptionally tedious. The headphones which come with the software are adequate, but I've heard you can get better recognition with a higher quality set. My biggest complaint about the software is that it consumes a tremendous amount of system resources on your computer. I can not be running any other programs at the same time, or it crashes. I am using a computer with a 1.40 GHz Centrino processor with 512MB of RAM. Even when I am running only IBM ViaVoice and MS Word, I clearly run into performance issues. After a while my computer starts to bog down and I have to restart it. Another complaint is that it types with unusual quirks which it seems it would have been easy for IBM to have prevented. For example, it often fails to capitalize the first word in a sentence, especially when dictating in chat software. And for some reason, when you dictate for a passage to be in quotation marks, it leaves a space between the quotation marks and the words inside the quote. And sometimes, for some words, it is impossible to get the software to recognize that you are dictating a word, and not issuing a command. IBM's ViaVoice is considerably cheaper than the competition. Unfortunately, I have no idea if the higher price of the competing products is justified by being a higher-quality product. ViaVoice is probably adequate for most casual dictating needs. If you've never used dictation software before, it's really impressive the way it can usually understand what you're saying. The more you use it, the better it gets at recognizing what you are saying, and the better you will get to at enunciating in a way it can understand. After a few months of casual usage, I would say my software is hitting 90 to 95% accuracy. The bottom line is, for the price, this is pretty good software (though I sure do wish it was more stable). If you use dictation a lot and know that the competing products are better quality, they would be worth the price. But for a casual user, this software is fine. ... Read more

1) Spy Sweeper v2.6 or 3.0 by Webroot Software * * - These antispywares use real time scanning of system memory to detect spyware before it invades your system. I have used all the above Antispyware and at this point in time Spy Sweeper seems to do the best job at detecting and removing Spyware/Adware/Tracking cookies and it has the most extensive set of options. The interface is simple and effective and allows you to customize it exactly to your needs. Choose to protect your Internet Explorer 6 browser homepage from adware changes, block tracking cookies, schedule system scans, enable automatic detections updates, allow it to ignore detecting friendly softwares or automatically delete malware. You can even highlight the discovered spyware and click on an information link which connects to Webroot's spyware database to tell you more details about each of the bad software pests that were detected on your computer. I have found Spy Sweeper to detect more spyware and more spyware traces left on your system than any of the others I have tried. After running Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D and even deleting the spyware they found from my computer Spy Sweeper still was able to detect numerous pests and traces of them left behind that the others missed. The only drawback is that Spy Sweeper takes much longer to do a complete scan of your entire system than the others but it does to do a better job scanning and detecting. I found Spy Sweeper to have very little negative impact on my overall system speed or performance. On my a Pentium 3, 1Ghz notebook computer I am using a combination of Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware (free version), SpySweeper, and McAfee Antispyware 2005, McAfee Antivirus 2004, and Zone Alarm Pro 4.5 firewall all at the same time with the McAfee Antispyware and Spy Sweeper programs both scanning system memory and executable programs in real-time for spyware. The McAfee Antispyware program is brand new and with its current release version 1.0 does not detect tracking cookies. However, I really like the McAfee program's simple interface, its auto-updating features and its seamless integration with McAfee Antivirus 2004 and the McAfee Security Center. The McAfee Antispyware also works great as a stand alone antispyware product when coupled with any other company's antivirus software. Although at the time of this review the other antispyware programs do in fact seem to have somewhat better detection rates for the more common spywares, adwares & tracking cookies, during a recent scan of my notebook computer the McAfee Antispyware 2005 was able to detect and completely remove one very bad piece of spyware/adware that all of the other programs had completely missed. Spybot S&D is an excellent free program (donation-ware). It is in fact rated #1 by many top security software experts and it has some very nice customizable features such as its "immunize" and "teatimer" settings which protect spyware from making changes to your computer registry or system settings. You could disagree about which is the best of the free spyware programs. Spybot S&D has an edge in preventing spyware infestations with its array of customizable features and its ability to warn you of potential weaknesses in your system security but Ad-Aware provides more frequent updates and seems to do a slightly better job at detecting spyware and adware during its full system scans. Since both Spybot and Ad-Aware (free version) are completely free you should download and use both of them. If you really like the free version of Ad-Aware you might consider purchasing one of the more complete Ad-Aware paid for full featured versions (Ad-Aware Plus or the most advanced Ad-Aware Pro) which include automatic updating and real time scanning. This was a very close race among the top five and each one of these highly rated antispyware programs can be very effective in preventing various forms of spyware from infecting your computer but at this point in time I have to give five stars and the winning trophy for the best stand alone antispyware program to Webroot's Spy Sweeper.
But I did some research and decided to take a chance on Spy Sweeper. For $30 it was a lot cheaper than a new computer or an expensive tech repair. To my astonishment, the program found 103 cookies? in about 10 minutes, and in another 15 minutes, and after rebooting, my PC was good as new. As long as it continues to sweep, Spy Sweeper rules!

To give this product a fair review, it needs to be repesented correctly on this site as not being the latest version for Mac. If I am wrong about this, I will correct it in a further review very soon.
Training the program is a long process, and the fact that I cannot use it now is ridiculous. I consider myself a mac expert, and use many programs. I have never been more frustrated with a program than I am with this one. Support is poor, and updaters are few-and don't help. Save your money and more importantly your time-don't buy this program.. ... Read more

And sometimes it opens and sometimes it doesn't. Mainly doesn't. Then I find this...via Google.. Problem: After launching Dragon or ViaVoice and clicking a link in one of the menus, the system locks up or freezes. Other symptoms include Dragon NaturallySpeaking's Select-and-Say or ViaVoice's dictation and commands fail in Microsoft Office XP applications, such as Word and Microsoft Outlook. Cause: Microsoft Office XP's "Alternate User Input" installs a background process called CTFMON.exe which can interfere with Dragon or ViaVoice. The following information was taken from the Microsoft website: "...Ctfmon.exe monitors the active windows and provides text input service support for speech recognition, handwriting recognition, keyboard, translation, and other alternative user input technologies...." And you can get NO, repeat, NO, help from ScanSoft. DO NOT BUY!
ViaVoice version 10 however has been a nightmare. I still have not been able to install it on a Win2K-SP4 computer. I am a fairly advanced computer programmer/systems person with 20+ years of experience. Support is virtually non-existent from Scansoft. My 30 days of free support from IBM where I purchased the product has not been honored. All support has to come from Scansoft. Great features, if you can access them. I am seriously thinking of demanding my money back. Washington State has some very consumer friendly laws regarding "Fitness for Purpose", one more reason I am grateful to live in the Northwest.

It actually works quite well. The key is to spend time at the beginning to train it to your voice and to correct each error. Now its not going to be like Star Wars (Scotty: "A keyboard, how quaint.") but it works and has greatly reduced my Carpal Tunnel wrist pain.
