3-0 out of 5 stars No Terminal Services In This Edition
Be forewarned if you are wanting to use this as an application server. The Terminal Services included in this edition are limited to two users and will NOT run in Application Mode. Microsoft claims this limited for security purposes, but you can do this on their full blown product, so I think it is more for $ purposes (they want more). As far as the product goes, the value is pretty good. You get an Exchange server, POP3 mail connector (this distributes email from a POP3 account to the proper Exchange account), fax sharing software, and Outlook 2003. Most things can be done through the Wizard driven interface, which can be a hinderance if you are trying to customize the product. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Internet Security for internet security
I suppose that I am concerned about internet security. Aside from those hilarious commercials (by Citibank, I think) of fraud (usually credit card theft), there is a fair amount of potential problems regarding what others see of my life from my internet usage. In addition, I think that my life would be extremely disrupted if I had my powerbook hit with any damaging/destructive viruses. (Thats why I recommend backup, backup, backup. But I digress...)

There are real problems "out there." But at the same time, I think balance and prudence are called for.

So, I continue to use the internet. I surf, and I send email. I purchase over the internet. And I "do" wireless.

But, I also set up passwords, and I use OS X's default firewall. And I think (without any real confirmation) that I am fairly safe from prying eyes...

With this all in mind, I looked at Symantec's Internet Security 3.0 with interest. This is a collection of three (plus) programs which helps with (surprise!) your internet security.

The three programs are AntiVirus, Personal Firewall, and Privacy Control. In addition (the plus, referenced above), Alladin iClean is included. I'll discuss AntiVirus more at the end of this review.

I was impressed with the detail in the enclosed user manual, plus I like that the manual is fully available as a postscript file (.pdf) which means its more referable when I'm on the road. The install was smooth and easy.

Personal Firewall seems to do a good job. At least, once started, I checked it against its self checks, and all reported adequate. I am no expert, but OS X has a firewall installed in 10.3 (under System Preferences / Sharing.) I don't know if one is better than the other; only than one comes installed with the system software, and one comes as part of Symantec's software suite. I haven't a good idea of how to tell the strengths of the firewalls themselves, so I compared preferences and options. In general both are similar in ease of set-up and usage. I like the access to the System Preferences, where as to get to Symantec's I am required to start the software application, so this is a minor downside.

Privacy Control was much less "obviously" useful. I use Safari's built in add-blocker, and I trust its privacy security with that "little lock" icon, I generally believe my data transfers to be safe. And I didn't see any benefit to Symantec's version, other than if you might be using an "older" or less capable internet browser.

I like the idea of Alladin iClean, in the ability to "scrub" data from browser records. And I might recommend this be part of a business or multi-use computer, where a general user account is enabled. However, I didn't see this as a benefit to the average home user.

Finally, Symantec's AntiVirus ran smoothly and efficiently. I believe its updates are as good as others (since I've read that most antivirus information is shared and there isn't a benefit of one type or another, as long as you are routinely running a check for viruses.) But once again, my current set-up and use seem to be part of the issue here. I signed up for a .mac account when I acquired my new powerbook, and as one of the benefits, I use Virex 7 (included as one of .mac's account benefits.) And so, I feel my money was much better spent on .mac, with Virex 7 included, rather than on Symantec's Internet Security 3.0 software.

This is a good set of software, and if you don't have a collection of programs similar, I highly recommend you consider the suite. However, weigh the price when you are deciding. I found the price a bit steep for what I got out of the software.

4-0 out of 5 stars This program IS NOT fully compatible with OS X Panther
The privacy controls are not compatible with OS X Panther. According to symantec's web page they are working on a patch. The rest of this program does run very smoothly and I have no problems. Have I been hacked? Im typing this on the computer that has the program install on it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS JUNK
I wonder how this junk came to be listed at Amazon. The program installs spy-ware as well as other ad supported programs. Most importantly, Namo does not do its job. It is alot easier to build a website using Dreamweaver or Frontpage. Just dont buy this. If you are thinking about it, then go download the trial version of it and see if you still want it. This is a junk. The worst product I've ever bought at amazon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent web authoring tool
WebEditor is a fine tool bundled with good utilities and very good content such as themes that are better than MSFrontpage. If you are more than a beginner when it comes to web authoring or are a quick learner, this is an excellent product at a great price. If you are a novice or want a simple tool to throw up webpages then MSfrontpage *hosted on a server with MSFrontpage server extensions* is an easier tool to use. If you don't have a server with MSFP extensions, then this is a better tool then MSFP which is not too flexible without the extensions.

The tool is very well execute. Although you may miss some of Microsoft's ease-of-use features, it is well organized and, at many things, better than MS frontpage. It also comes with a real manual instead of the lame manual-let that MSFP comes with (plan on paying another $40+ for a decent MSFP manual if you buy that tool.)

I've come across a few crashes but overall, the tool is quite stable for a *.0 rev.

I purchased this tool in order to create a school website that would be hosted on a server without MSFP extensions. I liked it so much that I switched my home page to it and have no plans to ever use MSFP again.

If you want more power with a tad less ease of use than MSFP and at a much better price, this is the tool get.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have
I have Front Page and Macromedia and both have some major issues.
If you used any of these, Front Page has uploading problems and will not allow you to use MP3 files. Plus you can spot a front page site a mile away (boring).
Macromedia is too hard to use and not user friendly at all.

Namo is the best of both worlds.
-It's easy to use and has allot of great looking templates and utilities. I switched my website file to Namo easily and loving it!
I highly recommend it. ******!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great tool with so many free utilities
I just bought this product to make a simple website out of it. As soon as I launched it, I found out all the powerful features this webeditor included, and I had to continue build my website to be more professional looking. With the WebBoard, I am now able to keep in touch in my family back where I am from. This is just a great product.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very high quality product
I have created a number of sites using this product. They look very professional, even thought I am not a professional web developer. Well, that is the whole point! It is easy to install, easy to create web sites using site wizard, easy to choose themes, easy to CHANGE themes, has a wysiwyg editor, easy site upload and sync. I was able to easily define the site structure. It easily picks up files in the folder hierarchy, created by other applications ~ like jAlbum that I used to create photo albums. It has never crashed on me so far. I have used WebEditor 5.5 and upgraded to 6.0. Version 6.0 has scripting tool and excellent web-board. I have hosted some silly family forums there too. It also comes bundled with a number of powerful utilities. Checkout their website for detailed feature list. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Real Time Spyware and Adware Protection
I own McAfee Internet Security Suite 2004 but I purchased the stand alone version of this McAfee AntiSpyware 2005 program even though basically the same program is bundled as part of the "Privacy Service Program" with McAfee Internet Security Suite 2004 v6.0 . I did not want to use the Privacy Service program at all so I figured this would work best for me. I also decided could also easily use this as a stand alone program in the future along with another company's antivirus program such as Symantec's Norton Antivirus.

This McAfee Antispyware program is very simple to use and it seems to work well. You can open up the program's display properties anytime and monitor its activity and you will see it working as it scans web pages in real time as you browse using Internet Explorer. You can also schedule system wide scans and it has customizable controls so you can enable trusted spyware or adware programs not to be blocked. The biggest drawback is that it does not automatically detect and remove tracking cookies. Its main advantage is realtime scanning and blocking of spyware and adware. Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware (basic) are both free to download and work very well also however those programs do not auto update and they don't do essential real time scanning to stop the spyware before it infects your computer. Spybot does have an immunize feature that helps block a pre-set number of common spyware/adware programs but this list is static while McAfee's program uses dynamic scanning with the latest automatically updated spyware/adware detections.

I would recommend you use all three antispyware programs. Download Spybot and Ad-Aware for free and also install McAfee Antispyware 2005 for real time scanning. In this age of spyware, adware, trojan horses, tracking cookies etc. you can't be too safe. I would also recommend a good firewall like Zone Alarm 4.x or the even more feature rich Zone Alarm Pro 4.x ( Zone Alarm 4 with internet cookie, popup, and privacy controls) . Use a good Antivirus program such as McAfee 2004, Norton 2003, PC-Cillin 2004, or Kaspersky.

One more highly rated antispyware program you might want to look at is Webroot's SpySweeper which has all the realtime scanning features of McAfee along with tracking cookie detection. SpySweeper is a seasoned antispyware program known to have one of the highest spyware/adware/tracking-cookie detection rates among all the anti-spyware programs. Although the McAfee Antispyware 2005 is still relatively new to the antispyware game compared to other programs, I would expect this recently released McAfee software to continue to improve this year as this program auto-updates itself with more advanced features and enhanced spyware detections. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Good recognition, but very unstable program
This is my first experience with dictation software, so I don't have anything to compare it to. All I can do is offer observations of how it has worked for me.

Training this software takes quite a long time; a few hours if you want to get maximum performance. I actually wouldn't mind so much, except that you need to retrain it every time you buy a new microphone or work in an environment with a different sound level. For me, this has meant having to train the software several times. Reading the provided material so the software can sample your voice is actually kind of fun, but after you've done it a few times, it is exceptionally tedious.

The headphones which come with the software are adequate, but I've heard you can get better recognition with a higher quality set.

My biggest complaint about the software is that it consumes a tremendous amount of system resources on your computer. I can not be running any other programs at the same time, or it crashes. I am using a computer with a 1.40 GHz Centrino processor with 512MB of RAM. Even when I am running only IBM ViaVoice and MS Word, I clearly run into performance issues. After a while my computer starts to bog down and I have to restart it.

Another complaint is that it types with unusual quirks which it seems it would have been easy for IBM to have prevented. For example, it often fails to capitalize the first word in a sentence, especially when dictating in chat software. And for some reason, when you dictate for a passage to be in quotation marks, it leaves a space between the quotation marks and the words inside the quote. And sometimes, for some words, it is impossible to get the software to recognize that you are dictating a word, and not issuing a command.

IBM's ViaVoice is considerably cheaper than the competition. Unfortunately, I have no idea if the higher price of the competing products is justified by being a higher-quality product. ViaVoice is probably adequate for most casual dictating needs. If you've never used dictation software before, it's really impressive the way it can usually understand what you're saying. The more you use it, the better it gets at recognizing what you are saying, and the better you will get to at enunciating in a way it can understand. After a few months of casual usage, I would say my software is hitting 90 to 95% accuracy.

The bottom line is, for the price, this is pretty good software (though I sure do wish it was more stable). If you use dictation a lot and know that the competing products are better quality, they would be worth the price. But for a casual user, this software is fine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spy Sweeper is The Best Antispyware You Can Buy
My Top Five Rated Anti-spywares:

1) Spy Sweeper v2.6 or 3.0 by Webroot Software *
2) Ad-Aware by Lavasoft v6.0 (paid full versions) *
3) Ad-Aware by Lavasoft v6.0 (free version)
4) Spybot Search & Destroy v1.3 (free, donation-ware) by Safer-Networking-org
5) McAfee Antispyware 2005 v1.0 * ( newly released but already highly rated and moving up fast)

* - These antispywares use real time scanning of system memory to detect spyware before it invades your system.

I have used all the above Antispyware and at this point in time Spy Sweeper seems to do the best job at detecting and removing Spyware/Adware/Tracking cookies and it has the most extensive set of options. The interface is simple and effective and allows you to customize it exactly to your needs. Choose to protect your Internet Explorer 6 browser homepage from adware changes, block tracking cookies, schedule system scans, enable automatic detections updates, allow it to ignore detecting friendly softwares or automatically delete malware. You can even highlight the discovered spyware and click on an information link which connects to Webroot's spyware database to tell you more details about each of the bad software pests that were detected on your computer. I have found Spy Sweeper to detect more spyware and more spyware traces left on your system than any of the others I have tried. After running Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D and even deleting the spyware they found from my computer Spy Sweeper still was able to detect numerous pests and traces of them left behind that the others missed. The only drawback is that Spy Sweeper takes much longer to do a complete scan of your entire system than the others but it does to do a better job scanning and detecting.

I found Spy Sweeper to have very little negative impact on my overall system speed or performance. On my a Pentium 3, 1Ghz notebook computer I am using a combination of Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware (free version), SpySweeper, and McAfee Antispyware 2005, McAfee Antivirus 2004, and Zone Alarm Pro 4.5 firewall all at the same time with the McAfee Antispyware and Spy Sweeper programs both scanning system memory and executable programs in real-time for spyware. The McAfee Antispyware program is brand new and with its current release version 1.0 does not detect tracking cookies. However, I really like the McAfee program's simple interface, its auto-updating features and its seamless integration with McAfee Antivirus 2004 and the McAfee Security Center. The McAfee Antispyware also works great as a stand alone antispyware product when coupled with any other company's antivirus software. Although at the time of this review the other antispyware programs do in fact seem to have somewhat better detection rates for the more common spywares, adwares & tracking cookies, during a recent scan of my notebook computer the McAfee Antispyware 2005 was able to detect and completely remove one very bad piece of spyware/adware that all of the other programs had completely missed.

Spybot S&D is an excellent free program (donation-ware). It is in fact rated #1 by many top security software experts and it has some very nice customizable features such as its "immunize" and "teatimer" settings which protect spyware from making changes to your computer registry or system settings. You could disagree about which is the best of the free spyware programs. Spybot S&D has an edge in preventing spyware infestations with its array of customizable features and its ability to warn you of potential weaknesses in your system security but Ad-Aware provides more frequent updates and seems to do a slightly better job at detecting spyware and adware during its full system scans. Since both Spybot and Ad-Aware (free version) are completely free you should download and use both of them. If you really like the free version of Ad-Aware you might consider purchasing one of the more complete Ad-Aware paid for full featured versions (Ad-Aware Plus or the most advanced Ad-Aware Pro) which include automatic updating and real time scanning.

This was a very close race among the top five and each one of these highly rated antispyware programs can be very effective in preventing various forms of spyware from infecting your computer but at this point in time I have to give five stars and the winning trophy for the best stand alone antispyware program to Webroot's Spy Sweeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest software ever!
My computer was a disaster riddled with spyware. Probably because of Kazaa. I thought it was a simple virus which I found with Norton, and until now I had never heard of spyware. My computer still was slow as heck and barely moving on the internet after the virus was quarantined. I thought the computer was toast.

But I did some research and decided to take a chance on Spy Sweeper. For $30 it was a lot cheaper than a new computer or an expensive tech repair. To my astonishment, the program found 103 cookies? in about 10 minutes, and in another 15 minutes, and after rebooting, my PC was good as new.

As long as it continues to sweep, Spy Sweeper rules!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product
So far this product has worked very well and seems to have done it's job for the most part. After buying PC Cillin Internet Security 2004(very good also), I still had some issues that remained unresolved. A trojan horse virus and tons of spy and adware along with a host of other "trash" was still comandeering my machine. The PC Cillin removed the lot of and still protects my machine, however Spy Sweeper was the icing on the cake. This program, once installed detected just about every removable piece of "ware" on my machine and only hiccuped once. I've ran it several times and each time it finds at least one more hidden item.
The only two scares I had were 1) on initial install, it seemed to want to install itself twice. Either way, the program was successful in doing that. 2) I had that nasty Gain/Gator spy/ad ware on my machine and it attached itself to my clock. Sweeper got extremely bogged down and appeared to lock up my machine when it located this one. Rather than freak out and slam the product, I waited about 15 minutes while it worked it's way through that mess. The initial scan took over 1 1/2, however when it was complete, Sweeper found over 2500 pieces of internet garbage and quarantined them. My machine is now running around 95% of it's original efficiency after the installation of these two products and the net is also much faster. I'm no guru, but I do my homework before buying anything. Many hours were spent researching this product and it's compatibility with PC Cillin and other programs I've installed. Thumbs up guys. If you can ever find us the person responsible for the spy/ad garbage, let me know...I want his head for a door knocker.

2-0 out of 5 stars Slow on the Computer & Even Slower Support
It does slow up the computer even in the low priority mode. Their support people I do not think exist as I have written twice with no response. I know it is a "cheap" program but when they offer support I expect them to give it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Did not get the job done
I bought two licenses of Spy Sweeper for my two computers. On my Windows 2000 box, Spy Sweeper found lots of stuff, so I told it to remove everything it found. The software needed a reboot to remove one thing, so I rebooted. When the computer came back up, I could not connect to the Internet. I e-mailed Webroot support. That was a week ago. I have not gotten a reply. I e-mailed the symptoms of the problem to Dell, and they diagnosed the problem as TCP/IP registry corruption. Maybe that wasn't Spy Sweeper, but it does a lot with the registry. I ran Spy Sweeper on my daughter's computer as well, and, again it found lots of stuff, which I removed. However, the main spyware/adware that caused me to buy Spy Sweeper was Adtomi, which I had been unable to eradicate (it manages to keep getting itself into startup areas). Spy Sweeper was not successful in getting rid of it either. I will be testing out Webroot's 30-day money-back guarantee policy tomorrow. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Wrong Product for panther
I can't get the microphone to even record. I think this version is incompatible with Panther, or I may have a faulty product. I am a very experienced Mac user and actually read manuals and web sites for support. It's possible that the correct product is actually IBM ViaVoice for Mac X USB, v. 3. It's a $30 upgrade from this version. Neither Scansoft nor Amazon makes this clear from looking at this page!

To give this product a fair review, it needs to be repesented correctly on this site as not being the latest version for Mac.

If I am wrong about this, I will correct it in a further review very soon.

Due to a spinal cord injury, my hands do not work. Obviously, typing is difficult, especially extended word processing. I use my computer 8-10 hours/day for work, email, etc., and frequently need to type more than a few lines. So, Viavoice seems to be the obvious choice for me. I have owned viavoice and each upgrade since the first version. Despite updates, this program has never worked well on OS X. On a few occasions I have gotten it to operate briefly, but usually it crashes, fails to open, does not respond, or dissappoints me in some other way.

Training the program is a long process, and the fact that I cannot use it now is ridiculous. I consider myself a mac expert, and use many programs. I have never been more frustrated with a program than I am with this one. Support is poor, and updaters are few-and don't help.

Save your money and more importantly your time-don't buy this program.. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I see on this site that most people did not like this product. Well, I did. At first it was a dissapointment, but after I did lots of voice testing and corrections, it was great. No hands are needed and it is relitivley fast. Great Buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Crashes, crashes, crashes - DO NOT BUY
Installed ViaVoice 10 in Windows XP Pro...

And sometimes it opens and sometimes it doesn't. Mainly doesn't.

Then I find this...via Google..

Problem:

After launching Dragon or ViaVoice and clicking a link in one of the menus, the system locks up or freezes. Other symptoms include Dragon NaturallySpeaking's Select-and-Say or ViaVoice's dictation and commands fail in Microsoft Office XP applications, such as Word and Microsoft Outlook.

Cause:

Microsoft Office XP's "Alternate User Input" installs a background process called CTFMON.exe which can interfere with Dragon or ViaVoice. The following information was taken from the Microsoft website:

"...Ctfmon.exe monitors the active windows and provides text input service support for speech recognition, handwriting recognition, keyboard, translation, and other alternative user input technologies...."

And you can get NO, repeat, NO, help from ScanSoft.

DO NOT BUY!

2-0 out of 5 stars do not buy it if you have mcafee internet security soft ware
IBM viavoice usbpro has major conflict issues with mcafee internet security suite(6.)Ibm redirects you to scansoft that has a lousy support which is charged to your credit card after the first free query;their online knowledge database is sparse and the tech personell seem to be reading their answers from algorhythms with background knowledge barely above the average customer's; Mcafee has a more extensive online database but no free tech support phone calls; problems of conflict between the softwares were related to TCP/IP port (viavoice apparently works through an open port) and to speech engine conflicts;none could resolve these issues;such issues in my opinion can only be resolved by interdisciplinary programmers;short of this the choice is one software verses the other

2-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Support - Many Installation Problems
An earlier ViaVoice installation 3 years ago went fine and the product was pretty useful and accurate enough for my purposes.

ViaVoice version 10 however has been a nightmare. I still have not been able to install it on a Win2K-SP4 computer. I am a fairly advanced computer programmer/systems person with 20+ years of experience.

Support is virtually non-existent from Scansoft. My 30 days of free support from IBM where I purchased the product has not been honored. All support has to come from Scansoft.

Great features, if you can access them. I am seriously thinking of demanding my money back. Washington State has some very consumer friendly laws regarding "Fitness for Purpose", one more reason I am grateful to live in the Northwest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Incompatible with Word 2003
I have used ViaVoice Ver10 Pro USB for a little over a year with great results. On a fast computer system it keeps up with you almost no matter the speed of your speaking. It does occassionally crash. There seems to be a problem with it writing back to memory. IBM was unable to find the problem. It had done this on other computers as well. I've used it with MS Office XP Pro on my old computer. I upgraded to a new computer with MS Office Small Business Ed 2003 only to find that ViaVoice is not compatible with the components. I spent $9.95 in tech support only to be told that! They said that they plan to put that info on their website(Scansoft is now the tech support for this product). To date they haven't. Guess, they want to sell as many copies as possible before they make a patch. Anyway, if you're planning to use this with Office 2003 or higher it will not work and tech support will do nothing to help you except take your money.
Update: 5/5/2004: I contacted ScanSoft to find out if they are making a patch to make it compatable with Word 2003. Their standard answer is "We're working on it." If you go to their website you will find that they still haven't put in a disclaimer that it doesn't work with all Word editions. It just says that it does work with Word. I wonder how many refunds they are giving out for false advertising? I'm also surprised that the major PC magazines haven't picked up on this. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Getting Pretty Good
I thought that voice recognition software had finally reached the point where I would buy it. Based on my research IBM seemed to be the best. The Standard version really is all you need for dictation of reports, articles, letters, etc. Email will require a more advanced version.

It actually works quite well. The key is to spend time at the beginning to train it to your voice and to correct each error. Now its not going to be like Star Wars (Scotty: "A keyboard, how quaint.") but it works and has greatly reduced my Carpal Tunnel wrist pain.

Not quite 5 stars, I am a tough critic, but worth the money and I am using it daily in my work. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Nagging Bugs from CS Not Fixed In CS2
Very disappointing release!I have been a GoLive user for going on two years now and after a long waiting period, CS2 is finally upon us.Unfortunately, CS2 did not herald the bug fixes and core improvements so many GoLive users have been waited for.

The most glaring problem is that GoLive CS2 still does not have a history feature.Even ridiculously simple functions like previewing your in-development pages make it impossible to revert to a previous state and undue any mistakes.Perform a find/replace and again, once you commit to the replace you cannot back out of this change and revert to an earlier state.

What is the point of previewing your webpage if you can't go back and correct a mistake? It is this kind of blatant oversight that damns GoLive to being a subpar program that just doesn't feel as intuitive or polished as other Adobe products.

There have been a number of improvements (such as an advanced CSS library) but small tweaks cannot make you overlook the fact that at its core, GoLive CS2 is a buggy and fundamentally broken product that fails to deliver on every level.

Another poor showing. When will Adobe get this right? Not worth the money as a stand alone product and certainly not worth upgrading from CS. ... Read more
