5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome. And, better yet, it even works.
This product does what is otherwise impossible: shrinks a partition without disturbing the data therein.
Also it works very fast! It takes just a minute or two to shrink or expand a partition.

It has always worked for me. If you wonder why you would need this software, don't worry about it. If you need it, you know it. And when you need it, this is the only program on earth that will do this work.
When you need it and it works it is AWESOME!

    Here's an example:
Say you have a teaching lab with 8 computers. You want to use Power Quest Drive Image to create a clone of the hard disk on computer #1 on CD. Then every Friday night after class you can restore the image on all 8 computers and Monday morning all your computers are fresh and ready, regardless of what last week's students did.

Computer #1 has a 100 GB hard drive in a single partition, but only 1GB is actually in use. The rest is free space. Since Drive Image backs up a partition at a time, you will need enough CDs to hold 100GB of compressed data, even though most of it will just be zeros. That might take you many CDs. What you need is a way to shrink the partition size down to just the 1GB in use. Conventional tools will not allow you to do this....they erase all the data in the partition if you shrink it. That kills you! That forces you to back up all the data to another hard drive, delete the partition, recreate the partition to the 1GB size, then format the partition, then reload the data from the spare hard drive, if possible, then create your Drive Image CD, and then go to through the whole process again to expand the partition back. This could take all day.

With Partition Magic, you just insert a diskette and about two minutes later you are done shrinking the partition to the needed size! Snap your image CD and then fire up Partition Magic again and in another two minutes the partition is back where it started! With this technology available doing it the old way makes about as much sense as using a Radio Shack cassette tape player for data storage on your IBM-PC instead of a hard drive.

The former owner of this program, Power Quest, was granted several patents on this technique. Check it out at www.uspto.gov - it's fascinating reading. Paraphrasing their words: obviously this function is not easy since it took 15 years from the introduction of the IBM-PC for someone to invent it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sorry! No Customer Support
This is a good product but forget about getting any available service packs from Scansoft and they won't help you. They also bury postings in the online help community if they are negative. The online knowledge help system is a joke. The company seems to be 'dead' to helping customers. I can see why Microtek scanner company dumped Scansoft to favor Abbey Fine Reader for bundled software. Wish I would have gone with Abbey instead. An important item with version 14 is the PDF tool. It is completely useless. You cannot get control of any fonts and the unicode or multinational font driver is 16 bit and won't do most of the characters. Trying any advertised acrobatics with a PDF is hopeless and security? none. Someone at Scansoft referred me to Digital River where it was bought via Scansoft online store to get help and Digital River simply ignores your request, and not only that their system retains email address use to buy it even if it changed and you cannot update it. They 'say' their response will go to dead email address. Looks like money rules to hell with the users. (This review is about the flagship OmniPage Pro 14 Office.)

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware of bugs and no free support
I want to add some more specifics to my review below. I bought Omnipage 12. It would not instal. Only after extensive searching on the internet did I find that it was incompatible - believe it or not - with the Windows XP start menu and also with all desktop backgrounds except the XP logo!

The problem could apparently be resolved by downloading service packs 1 & 2. So I changed to the new start menu and XP logo background and installation then was possible. But when I tried to get service packs 1 & 2, which can only be accessed by using the upgrade function within the program, nothing happened. An e-mail request to ScanSoft for help was ignored. No help was available on the users group either as no-one had found a solution.

But I persevered and tried to use Omnipage without the service packs. Then came the next unpleasant shock. I have an HP OfficeJet d135 four-in-one. Although listed by ScanSoft as a compatible scanner I found that this is only partly true. The shocking part was that Omnipage was not compatible - believe it or not again - with the automatic document handler on HP scanners! So I must feed in each page separately while it slowly scans them.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Omnipage users group is moribund or dead. I don't know if ScanSoft is blocking postings to the website because there were so many that were less than complimentary or whether users just gave up because there were no solutions.

Abbyy FineReader offers as complete a contrast as can be imagined. Free, unlimited technical assistance and a lively users group populated by a clearly contented group of users.

    So decide for yourself.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware of bugs and no free support
Beware of this product. It is buggy - see eg the users group at http://webboard.scansoft.com/ - and there is no free support, even for program bugs. Scansoft's attitude to known bugs is illustrated by the fact that there is a bug in both versions 11 and 12 which prevents many users from updating the program but despite a large number of postings to this effect on Scansoft's own website already referred to and e-mail notification to ScanSoft the bug remains. Abby FineReader apparently offers free support and a scanner that users say is better, for example, for OCR scanning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best !
You can't go wrong with this sofwtare, it's the best of its category. It blows away Abby and IRIS softwares technologies and capabilities. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars works for me!
I do some pretty arcane dictation with lots of technical vocabulary, and have found the system up to my demands. I have worked at training the system, and it keeps on improving. I do find some of the interfaces a bit awkward to work with compared to the system I use with my PC (Naturally Speaking Standard Edition), but then, I've worked with that system somewhat longer. If the recognition of iListen improves with use as well as Naturally Speaking has, I will change my rating to 5 stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars Be glad I didn't enter this with iListen
I purchased iListen about three years ago. I found that it might have been useful for verbal commands to control computer functions, but it was useless for dictation. I upgraded to version 1.2.1, patiently went through at least three, new "training" sessions, and still was unable to create useable text via verbal input. When iListen kept sending me e-mail solicitations, I offered to upgrade if they could demonstrate that they had improved accuracy. They replied, "Because there are so many variables, and everyone has a different definition of what is acceptable results, all sales of iListen software are final."

My definition of acceptable dictation was that accuracy was sufficient to permit replication upon proof reading. I would accept errors, but not so different from what I had said that I could not reconstruct my text from its translation. It never even came close. Perhaps my voice is incompatible with iListen, and maybe it will translate your speech accurately. In either case, remember, all sales are final. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the price!
I found this kit well worth the price. It supports most newer model phones. However, the features offered in the product depend on the model of your phone, so find out if your phone support the all the features.
Even though the product doesn't come with a detailed manual, you can always print it out online. I was able to transfer images and ringtones to my phone without any problems even without detailed instructions because the screens are pretty self explanatory.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful tool, but not quite universal
This kit supports most newer phones. It comes with two USB half-cords, and several phone half-cords. One USB cord is actually a serial converter, the other one is passive. The software is an all-in-one package, offering phonebook/ringtone/image/calendar sync and internet dialer, unlike FutureDial's Snap products. The software is well laid-out, however, not all phones support all sync functions. Also, some phones don't support two-way communication - you may be able to upload images, but you can't retrieve them. I gave the product only 3 stars for two reasons. First, the website doesn't mention that some information cannot be pulled from the phone - it can only be pushed to the phone. Second, the package I received had a defective serial converter USB cable - and after having to sit through three customer service reps, who may or may not know what they are doing, on a line that was busy for most of the day, I had to spend more money sending the cable in for exchange. The price is right for all the cables that you get, but there's free bitpim software out there that does the same, and more. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Internet Security for internet security
I suppose that I am concerned about internet security. Aside from those hilarious commercials (by Citibank, I think) of fraud (usually credit card theft), there is a fair amount of potential problems regarding what others see of my life from my internet usage. In addition, I think that my life would be extremely disrupted if I had my powerbook hit with any damaging/destructive viruses. (Thats why I recommend backup, backup, backup. But I digress...)

There are real problems "out there." But at the same time, I think balance and prudence are called for.

So, I continue to use the internet. I surf, and I send email. I purchase over the internet. And I "do" wireless.

But, I also set up passwords, and I use OS X's default firewall. And I think (without any real confirmation) that I am fairly safe from prying eyes...

With this all in mind, I looked at Symantec's Internet Security 3.0 with interest. This is a collection of three (plus) programs which helps with (surprise!) your internet security.

The three programs are AntiVirus, Personal Firewall, and Privacy Control. In addition (the plus, referenced above), Alladin iClean is included. I'll discuss AntiVirus more at the end of this review.

I was impressed with the detail in the enclosed user manual, plus I like that the manual is fully available as a postscript file (.pdf) which means its more referable when I'm on the road. The install was smooth and easy.

Personal Firewall seems to do a good job. At least, once started, I checked it against its self checks, and all reported adequate. I am no expert, but OS X has a firewall installed in 10.3 (under System Preferences / Sharing.) I don't know if one is better than the other; only than one comes installed with the system software, and one comes as part of Symantec's software suite. I haven't a good idea of how to tell the strengths of the firewalls themselves, so I compared preferences and options. In general both are similar in ease of set-up and usage. I like the access to the System Preferences, where as to get to Symantec's I am required to start the software application, so this is a minor downside.

Privacy Control was much less "obviously" useful. I use Safari's built in add-blocker, and I trust its privacy security with that "little lock" icon, I generally believe my data transfers to be safe. And I didn't see any benefit to Symantec's version, other than if you might be using an "older" or less capable internet browser.

I like the idea of Alladin iClean, in the ability to "scrub" data from browser records. And I might recommend this be part of a business or multi-use computer, where a general user account is enabled. However, I didn't see this as a benefit to the average home user.

Finally, Symantec's AntiVirus ran smoothly and efficiently. I believe its updates are as good as others (since I've read that most antivirus information is shared and there isn't a benefit of one type or another, as long as you are routinely running a check for viruses.) But once again, my current set-up and use seem to be part of the issue here. I signed up for a .mac account when I acquired my new powerbook, and as one of the benefits, I use Virex 7 (included as one of .mac's account benefits.) And so, I feel my money was much better spent on .mac, with Virex 7 included, rather than on Symantec's Internet Security 3.0 software.

This is a good set of software, and if you don't have a collection of programs similar, I highly recommend you consider the suite. However, weigh the price when you are deciding. I found the price a bit steep for what I got out of the software.

4-0 out of 5 stars This program IS NOT fully compatible with OS X Panther
The privacy controls are not compatible with OS X Panther. According to symantec's web page they are working on a patch. The rest of this program does run very smoothly and I have no problems. Have I been hacked? Im typing this on the computer that has the program install on it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars ACRONIS TRUE IMAGE 8.0 CAVEAT
According to the information on the box when you buy it some of the "Supported Hardware" follows:
    CD-R / CD-RW
    DVD-R / DVD-RW
    DVD+R / DVD+RW
I purchased the software, installed it (The installation went off without a hitch)and attempted to:
    A) Create a bootable DVD using the software and
    B) Image my drive for back-up
Well both A + B created error messages and would not perform the functions for which I purchased the software.I should mention that I have a brand new Dell desktop computer with a 120GB Maxtor internal HD, 2GB of RAM memory, a Plextor DVD burner and a Sony DVD ROM drive. In orther words this baby was born to Rock!I must stipulate that 99.99% of the software that I purchase works the first time right out of the box because I very carefully read the minimum system requirements, which OS the software supports and the supported hardware. If it does not work the first time right of the box then I return it and get a refund.Since this was the case here I did return the software to CompUSA and got a refund.I also e-mailed Acronis regarding the error messages. They did reply about two days later and the cause of the error messages was a bit of a shocker: "Acronis True Image 8.0 does not support DVD-R!"EVEN THOUGH IT STATES RIGHT ON THE BOX THAT IT DOES SUPPORT IT!My gut feeling is if Acronis screws up something this basic then what other flaws will I find in this program.I am a computer novice so the programs that I purchase must be bullit proof and when it comes to disk imaging I find there are no bullit proof programs.I am thinking of going with a simple file back up program that I can back-up to DVDs.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great BACKUP solution
Although I've been a big supporter and user of Norton (Symantec) products since way back to 1988, specialized utilities like disk imaging and partitioning have not been well implemented by Peter Norton. The developers at Acronis have disk imaging down. This application works beautifully and takes a "snapshot" of your entire hard drive in no time. This makes an excellent backup solution, so that you don't just end up backing up your "My Documents" folder (and all those mp3s and pictures you have).By taking a disk image, you capture all those little settings you have made, so that if anything goes wrong with your current hard drive, you can simply pop in a new hard drive, boot up to the rescue media boot CD that Acronis True Image can create for you and bingo! You're back in business. This is a top-notch piece of software and I would highly recommend it for expert or novice users alike.

1-0 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me
I installed this product and afterward got the blue screen of death.I emailed their support they were very responsive and helpfull. But it was becoming to much of a chore to fix, never got it to work.I ended up uninstalling it, had to run their uninstall then edit the registry to remove it there then fdisk the master boot record.I have used image cast at work for years imaging over a hundred computers. It installs and works a lot better.Only problem you have to buy a 10-user license at around 25.00 each.I couldn't recommend true image to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now that Symantec has destroyed Powerquest products...
Now that Symantec has bought Powerquest and succeeded in destroying their product line (PowerQuest Drive Image replaced with the inferior Norton Ghost, and Powerquest Partition Magic 8.x crippled with "activation" and other annoying anti-piracy measures), Acronis TrueImage becomes the best option out there.

I'm using an earlier release, not 8.0, but I can recommend it wholeheartedly. A great product, well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well designed and well working product
I tried both, norton ghost 9.0 and R-driveimage 2 first but those two did not work well at all. Ghost 9.0 could not see my external USB drive. R-driveimage 2 trialversion crashed a couple times.
Acronis trialversion worked right away. It can be used to image a drive while windows is running(!) and the bootable recovery CD worked right away. It could see all my drives. A good experience for a change! I recommend this productly strongly. ... Read more

    Amazon.com Review

Visual Studio .NET is Microsoft’s multi-faceted development tool, targeting both Windows and Web applications. This 2003 edition includes numerous small improvements as well as major new features like the Compact Framework, for applications that run on Pocket PC and other smart devices. It supports multiple languages, with the main ones being Visual Basic, C#, and C++. There is also a Java-like language called J#, although J# applications only work on Windows so this is not a true Java development tool. The Visual Studio .NET environment is truly integrated. It makes extensive use of docking and tabbed windows, and there are plenty of project wizards along with huge amounts of online help. Auto-completion and pop-up help eases the business of editing code.

Microsoft’s .NET tools are very different from their predecessors. Visual C++ can still compile standard Windows executables, but the other languages all target the .NET Framework, a runtime engine and class library that manages memory and enforces security. Framework applications perform well, since they are compiled to native code at runtime, but there is an overhead in terms of memory usage and the Framework runtime must be installed. In compensation, .NET brings many advantages. All the languages are fully object-oriented, the class library is rich, and XML support is fully integrated. ASP.NET is for web applications, and represents a large advance on the old ASP. Instead of script, ASP.NET supports any of the .NET languages, running on the server and just-in-time compiled to native code. There is a visual web page designer, and carefully designed applications support a wide range of browsers. New in this version of Visual Studio is Mobile Web Forms, which use adaptive rendering to support the browsers in mobile phones and PDAs. The database technology in Visual Studio is called ADO.NET, and uses a disconnected model that is ideal for laptops, smart devices, and wide area networks.

Visual Studio .NET Enterprise Architect 2003 is the top of the range. It’s the only version to include Visio, a drawing and modelling tool with integrated reverse-engineering and code-generation, though sadly not full round-tripping. There are also developer licenses for the key Microsoft server platforms, including Windows Server 2003, Exchange 2000 Server, Biztalk Server and SQL Server 2000. Another key component is the Visual SourceSafe code management system, which is especially important for team development, Application Center Test, for stress-testing web applications, and Enterprise Templates which let architects design and deploy best practices for project development. For those wondering whether to make the jump to .NET, this release is probably the right moment to go ahead. The technology is maturing, and the inclusion of the Compact Framework makes the package more compelling. The deep XML support on offer is essential for many enterprise applications and enables integration with other platforms. It’s still important to note the heavy system requirements, and that .NET applications do not run on Windows 95. In most cases, the higher productivity of .NET languages soon pays for any additional resources. --Tim Anderson, Amazon.co.uk ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Programming Suite
Microsoft Visual Studio.NET Enterprise Architecht enables programmers to take full advantage of the .NET platform. Visual Studio.NET allows programmers to utilize the newer .NET framework 1.1, which contains enhancements in security and performance.

This version of Visual Studio includes: Visual Basic.NET 2003, Visual C++.NET 2003, Visual C#.NET 2003, and Visual J#.NET 2003. Having access to all of the .NET languages means that you have the ability to code in whichever language is most appropriate to your project.

A few language enhancements have also been included in this version. One of the most useful is the ability to declare a variable inside a loop using VB.NET 2003. For example:

For each var1 as string in varArray
    'Do action
    Next

Microsoft also bundles a handful of useful utilities with this package. These utilities will enable you to monitor your applications, benchmark web services, obfuscate your code, and much more.

.NET has a slightly different syntax than earlier versions of the languages (ie version 6), so if you are new to .NET a reference book would be handy.

Visual Studio.NET 2003 is worth the upgrade.

If you are a developer using several Microsoft technologies, a MSDN subscription is very helpful. MSDN Universal subscriptions include Visual Studio Enterprise Architect, developer licenses for all Microsoft operating systems, developer licenses for all Microsoft server systems, Microsoft Office Professional Enterprise edition, and more. MSDN subscribers have access to support via managed newsgroups and phone support. ... Read more
