2-0 out of 5 stars Worked - barely
About five years ago I purchased Laplink Technical to move my files from my old laptop to my new Dell desktop computer. It worked perfectly the first time. This time I purchased PCMover to move my files from my old Dell (running ME) to my new Dell (running XP). After several days of struggles I did manage to get my files transferred, but not without a LOT of problems.

First of all, the software refused to recognize my Home Network linking my two Dell computers. I happily moved files back and forth between the computers using copy and paste so the network works perfectly. PCMover would not, under any circumstances, recognize the link, so I was forced to
use the enclosed USB cable - a slower way to transfer the files.

PCMover compressed the files before transfer but it is a resource HOG. I have a small program running that monitors my memory and PCMover drained the memory all the way down fast, then slowed the computer, then eventually crashed my old computer over, and over, and over again. I had to transfer 26gb of data and I had about 10-15 computer lockups and it took several days to move all the data.

Laplink...how can you let this product out the door like this? Eventually, I used my Home Network to move most of my files from the old computer to the new one so PCMover wouldn't have to do much work, and still it crashed my old computer. In the wee hours of the morning this morning I finally got PCMover to finished its task and now my new computer is running fine. I would have tried to use my old copy of Laplink Tech but I couldn't find the old software box, so that was why I bought PCMover thinking it would be an improvement over Laplink Tech and would be compatible with XP.

If I could have turned compression off I suspect the transfer would have gone well without crashing my old computer but this was NOT an option. Also, the sofware tries to be "cute" by referring to its operations in "moving van" terms. When the files are being transferred it's called "unloading the van". This is NOT funny when the process is crashing the computer.

My suggestions to Laplink - fix the bug that prevents the software from using the network connection, have the compression be an option, and don't try to be cute by using "moving van" terms. If you get the software it will eventually work and I hope your experience with it goes better than my experience. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Product is Total Crap
VPC installed just fine, but it was absolutely impossible to install either Windows 98 or 2000 even though system met all requirements.

1-0 out of 5 stars Extreemly Slow. Do not waste your money
First let me tell you my operating system:
iMac G4 800 Mhz with 512 Mb Ram

In Short:
Pros:
1- It is cool to have a windows operating system on your mac, and run windows applications on it.
2- multi operating systems
3- more stable than an actual PC

CONS:
1- EXTREEEEEEMLY Slow.
2- LIMITATIONS: most application will run tooo slow to even consider using them.

Description:
1- EXTREEEEEEMLY Slow. and I do not mean it is tolarable. nope, it is taking me 3 hours and still going, just to install my HP all in one 6100.
2- LIMITATIONS: you realy cannot run many applications, and I do not mean at the same time. Yes it is probably true that you can run almost any application that runs on a PC on the virtual PC, but not in a way that is usefull. I was able to install ALMOST every application that I can thin k of (sometimes they take ALOT of time to install), but when it is time to run them, they are sooooo slow, that I just give up.
let me give you a sense of how slow: to start explorer, it might take 1- 2 MINUTES, same for Word, anything that is not microsoft takes much longer it seems. Trying to run a trading software such as Harris Direct Marketspeed or Fidelity's active trader is not possible. These two applications would take around 15 minutes (versus < 1 minute in a pc with the same operating system and with a Pentium II ~ 400 MHz processor) that is if they even work at all. Opening "my computer" takes 10- 60 seconds depending if there is any other application working.

IN SUMMERY:
this is a great concept, but I DO NOT recommend this application AT ALL ......... UNLESS you have a 1.25 G3 mac with > 1GB RAM, THEN you COULD TRY IT AND TELL US, I think then it might be tolarable. Possibly with the next version supporting the G5 it will run at an exceptable level (this one does not run on a G5).

and PLEASE REMEMBER, if you DO NOT have WINDOWS 98, or above DO NOT PURCHASE THIS SOFTWARE, but purchase the one with operating system you want, since that will be much cheaper unless you want that OS for your PC.

1-0 out of 5 stars Virtual PC does not work on the G5
Virtual PC is not supported by the G5's. If you want to run dual operating systems, do not buy this product or the G5!

4-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work on G5
I was under the impression that this program allows you to use windows applications, but what it really does is allow you to run windows on your computer. In other words, you must buy a version of windows in addition to this product. So I had to pay $200 more for the windows program. I think it's too expensive for the value. It doesn't work on G5s. I don't like how when you open Windows, it does not allow your mouse to go outside the windows box so that you can resize the window to make it bigger.

It works well on my ibook, which has a G3. If you want to run windows on your computer, I highly recommend you to get the version with windows already on it, because you are going to have to buy windows anyway.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works well in Panther.
If you've been using previous versions of Virtual PC and upgraded to Panther to find that they weren't working, you will, unfortunately, need to upgrade to Virtual PC 6.
This is not an entirely bad thing. VPC6 has generally been more stable in my experience, and has added some great features. First and foremost, dock integration. VPC6 allows you to use a Start Menu in your dock, which can speed up the process of using the software -- just click, go to the program you want like you would in Windows, and then VPC will launch and start the program.
Also, it allows you to have currently running programs in your VPC session show up in the dock. You can retain these icons in the dock, or use them to force quit an app (although this doesn't work 100% of the time in my experience). Finally, running apps are now shown in the window that pops up when you do a command-option-escape. You can force quit them there if they hang, but again, I've had spotty results.
If you work in an environment such as web design, where you must see your site on all kinds of OS + browser combos, this is absolutely great. It beats having a PC around. However, for extremely processor-intensive tasks, you will need a PC. This is just an emulation, and when you get beyond casual use, you will find that it's underpowered for huge tasks. But for opening strange PC-specific files, tweaking the odd access database, or checking websites (especially if your bank refuses to work with Mac browsers), Virtual PC is great.
It will also easily grab your old VPC5 discs and import them into 6. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Product
Virtual PC runs at about one-tenth of the speed as a real PC, but for many applications this is fine. I use Virtual PC to run FreeBSD 4.8 and it runs very nicely on a Dual 1 GHz machine, and still okay on an 800 MHz PowerBook G4. The latest versions of Windows are still sluggish. This 6.1 update seems fine, but now litters the Users directory with empty Virtual PC Scripts folders and such. Get rid of them! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Even the most die-hard Mac user needs to use a Windows-based PC once in a while; there's just no getting around it. Short of buying a second computer, Connectix Virtual PC 5.0 is the ideal solution. This powerful emulation engine turns any Mac into a Windows PC, if only for the time that it's running, without the need for additional hardware. It also takes advantage of existing hardware, like tablets, mice, printers, and hard drives, and uses your existing network connections for connecting to the Internet. Most remarkable of all, it runs as if it were a Mac application, alongside other Mac apps, supporting full copy-and-paste and file-sharing functionality.

Virtual PC 5.0 offers full Mac OS X compatibility, supporting multiprocessor Macs, Windows XP Home and XP Professional, the ability to share removable media drives, an improved user interface, and other enhancements. Virtual PC also supports the installation of multiple guest operating systems, such as Windows 98, Windows 2000, and even Linux.

Because this is a software-only emulation package, its performance is directly tied to the speed of your machine. In our testing, we installed Virtual PC 5.0 on both a 400 MHz G3 PowerBook (Pizmo) with 640 MB RAM, and a 500 MHz dual-processor G4 with 1.5 GB RAM. Both machines were running OS X 10.1.4. As one would expect, Virtual PC 5.0 on the PowerBook was substantially slower, while the dual-processor G4 was fairly snappy. Virtual PC 5.0 itself performed as advertised, though, making this an ideal solution for someone who occasionally needs Windows compatibility.

Would we want to work full-time on this kind of Windows machine? No. But if we need to translate a document or test a Web site on the Windows version of Netscape, or perform some other Windows-specific task, this approach sure beats buying and maintaining additional hardware (assuming the hardware you've got has the necessary horsepower). --Mike Caputo ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Software I mean Great Great Great SOFTWARE.
I had an macintosh computer for 1 year running mac os 9. I had Roadrunner as for the internet. And when I purchased This Great Software Windows for MAC it was cool. Only thing was it was slow i mean very slow but i got a long with it ITS LIFE. WHEN YOU HAVE ROADRUNNER YOU HAVE IT AND IT HELPS OUT ALOT TOO

THIS IS GREAT GREAT SOFTWARE YOU SHOULD BUY IN MY OPINION ... COOL ... SOFTWARE

4-0 out of 5 stars Virtual PC 5.0 Windows XP
I have an "old" Power Mac G4 dual 1 GHZ processor with 1.5G of RAM installed. I am running the software under OSX. I do not believe that the OS 9 version supports dual processors.
The installation was a bit rough. I had to install and uninstall two times. The upgrade, v 5.04 is supposed to make this easier. I don't think you can install the update until you install the original version so any fixes seem useless if you first have to jump the install hurdle before updating.
Once things booted up, performance has been great. I would hesitate to wonder how well it would work with a slower processor. This version recognizes both processors.
I echo the comments about documentation. Connectix assumes too much. The second CD is used if you are prompted to insert your Windows CD. I guess it has a bunch of drivers.
I am waiting for a response from technical support regarding neccessity of using a firewall and antivirus. I run NIS on both the Mac and the virtual XP PC. I think it is needed, but NIS definitely bogs down the app. Still acceptable, but not as jawbreaking fast as the original install.
Another sore point I have with Connectix is technical support. You get one free incident response and then you are charged[...]after that. So my inability to initially install burned my response up and that response also applied to my email request.
They do have a forum, but I would have hoped for a little more support, maybe 30 days.
I would definitely respect the minimum system requirements listed. I am near the top as far as Mac performance and would wonder how well it would work with a G3 or a 500 MHZ G4.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lousy piece of software!!!! BEWARE!!!
I am a recent Mac convert. I have used Windows machines for many, many years. When I bought my IMac, I had heard about this program and was very excited...just think the best of both worlds, OS X and Windows XP Home. I plunked down my hard-earned ... and boy am I disappointed. THIS SOFTWARE IS BEYOND SLOW!!!! The documentation is lacking, the installation took several hours, and I now remember why I switched to a Mac in the first place. Believe me when I say, PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS SOFTWARE!!!! YOU WILL REGRET IT IF YOU DO. IT IS MUCH, MUCH TOO SLOW TO BE OF ANY USE.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money
I bought this program to run one Windows program for a Garmin GPS receiver. I have a newer model Imac with 1 gig of memory, so it's not short of resources. I was completely frustrated and finally gave up. To begin with, Connectix' documentation is very bad. You get to the installation instructions about 3/4ths of the way through the manual. They are incomplete and unclear. The onscreen instructions are just as bad: they don't even tell you to insert the second of the discs at the appropriate time. It was only after hours of trying things that I finally got Windows XP to run at all. And that's when I discovered how slowly it runs. I mean crawling, not walking, slow. It took forever to draw a map, print it, etc. I gave up; just loaded the map program on the wife's pc. You do the same and you'll save the money and effort. What a waste of both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
I think this is a great product that brings Windows XP to the mac with style. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Painfully slow
I installed it on my 12" powerbook (G4 867 w/640m) running panther. Installation was slow but painless. I bought it because I needed to access my company's site which uses Citrix for webmail & MS office apps. Citrix doesn't work on the Mac browser, ie or safari. Well, it doesn't work in Virtual PC either. I tried to allocate more memory, close all other Mac apps, started VPC from a clean boot-up & nothing. It would time-out, applets wouldn't start... all from just trying to run through ie. I'm disappointed. BTW, under "System" in the control panal in VPC/WinXP, I was runing a 686 540m processor. It seemed more like a 386 runing at 100mh.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too slow
Although I don't have the most current Macintosh, I do have a dual processor 500 mhz G4. I found that VPC ran far too slow to make it useful. I removed the software from my computer and purchased a laptop windows pc which worked very well. I would use caution in buying this product if you are expecting it to work quickly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Be careful of what you wish for!
My Windows laptop is going on the blink--has trouble powering up. I figured, it was time to get a new computer. I decided to go Mac and bought a new OS X mac -- no regrets on going Mac. I also bought this software as there are a couple of Windows programs that I need to run which do not have a Mac version. After about 10 tries, I was finally able to install the software. But when I tried to install applications (via Control Panel --> Add programs), all I got was a busy hour glass then cursor..no program install. When I tried to view the Win XP tutorial, my computer froze and I had to turn off the power switch of my Mac. I then uninstalled the Virtual PC 6 software. It would have been much better to have just used the money for this program for a used PC for the programs I still need to run. Not worth the time and aggravation. Be careful what you wish for.

3-0 out of 5 stars Works
Need to run Windows software on a Mac? Then buy Virtual PC. The software runs in 9 and X. Not all software will run "smoothly". If you need to run a small application, then Virtual PC is fine, but if you want to run something that is CPU intensive, like a game or anything that uses a lot of graphics then Virtual PC isn't the right way to go. In this case, buy or build a PC. I've had to run numerical analysis applications on Windows, so I tried Virtual PC. It was so sluggish, I couldn't get any work done. I had to resort to building a PC.

1-0 out of 5 stars Crashes alot and painfully slow
I've owned two copies of virtual pc and there have been no improvements despite connectix's claims of a better program. The only improvements I've seen are the improvements to the windows operating system. I have a G4 power mac 788mhz processor with 80gb of HD and over 1000 MB of RAM. The virtual pc causes the entire computer to shut down if I run two or more browser windows at the same time. I bought this program so I can run windows based software when there isn't a mac version available, but the hassles far outweigh the benefits and it will be to my advantage to just buy a pc and use it along with the mac. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
Upon installation, it did not work - only 1 OS would boot. Downloaded latest build, but still didn't work. Contacted support team. They created a new build & emailed it. At least they did so quickly. Been working OK since.
It works ok as a boot manager, but since it doesn't do everything I need it to as a parition manager, I still need Partition Magic. Kind of expensive for just a boot manager.

4-0 out of 5 stars Does What it Says
I bought my first computer 6 mos ago with XP preinstalled. Wanted to try out RED HAT 7.3 (ext3)and this was the only software I found that supported it. Great product!! The manual cost it a star. Better off reading the help files after you install. Examples on dual booting Windows and Linux would be helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars It sure beats PartitionMagic!
I needed software to partition and multi-boot a new box I just built with Windows XP (NTFS file system) and Mandrake Linux (ReiserFS file system). (I know you Linux purists are wincing, but I still need my Windows). Anyway, OS Selector did everything it said it would, plus it was really fast. I won't go back to PartitionMagic after using this slick software. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A very big disappointment!
One of my friends owns an older copy of the Macmillan distribution of Linux Mandrake, but he could not get it to work properly. I thought I would give Macmillan a chance so I decided to buy Linux for Windows. Linux for Windows (Linux Mandrake 7.2 in disguise) has proven to be a bust!! After rebooting my computer, the installation program would not start. I tried many different installation methods offered with Linux for Windows and none of them worked. I even changed the boot order in my BIOS and it still did not work. Creating a boot disk also did not work. Tech support is non-existant. My friend contacted Macmillan many times for tech support and he has not received any support what so ever(it has been over a year now and still now word!). If your looking for a worry free installation of Linux, I suggest going with SUSE LINUX 7.0 Personal Edition. Installation was a snap and for all the software it includes, it's a bargain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Penguin Power without the sacrifice
I've read of no really good reviews for this product and I have to say that it is one of the best ways to distribute Linux. Of all the reviews I've seen of this, I don't believe many people who've tried to install it (and had problems) didn't read the INSTRUCTIONS. Lnx4wiN should only be installed on systems with at least 350mhz (pII min) with at LEAST 64megs RAM. Read the instructions and this little distro can give you some real power if you're into programming and want to give Linux a try. If you make sure you follow all steps, you won't lose windows and will be able to find out if your system is a Linux machine. (Frankly, I run Win95(c) and Lnx4wiN on my 233mhz 64meg machine and it does fine *tweaked)

4-0 out of 5 stars Was an interesting way to try Linux
I tried this on a 466MHZ 32MB Ram system. It took over an hour to install and then ran so slow I thought I had botched it. It uninstalls in seconds which was a nice surprise! I then spent another hour reinstalling it, then just figured the 32MB Ram was the reason it ran so slow. It would not recognise the built-in modem, but when I attached an external it found it quickly. It was fun to experiment with and I was looking forward to my 128MB Ram upgrade arrival. When I installed it Windows immedietly liked running with 160MB Ram, but Linux will no longer boot. I will probably just delete it this time. I want to run Linux again but it will have to wait until I have a dedicated computer for it. From what other users say this CD and program(s) make it easy mess-up your computer.
