1-0 out of 5 stars Unnecessary
Sure, you can buy this software and protect your Mac, but the question is, "Why would you want to waste your money?" There has not yet been one virus written for the Macintosh. (That's right, not a single one.) And even if you download a Windows virus, it won't work, because Windows programs can't run on Macs. Also, Microsoft Word's macro system can deliver viruses, but these do not operate on the Mac, much as a Windows virus cannot operate on the Mac. Don't waste your money on a product that protects you from viruses that don't exist.

1-0 out of 5 stars Broken (Un)installation
I couldn't be more disappointed. I have installed it successfully twice in the past, but my latest effort has been nothing but disappointment. I have been working on this for a number of hours, and continually get stuck on the NAV Update, where it successfully retrieves the various update files, but can't apply the last "Virus Def" (or at least couldn't Process it in 8 hours...). Worse, is that the product refuses all attempts to uninstall itself either (Unknown errors...). So, I'm left with a newly built machine, with a non-functioning NAV which won't successfully install nor uninstall. I am quickly reaching a point where I will need to wipe this disk and reinstall OSX from stratch. An anti-virus program should not be written so poorly to have to require this...

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay Away
As a long-time satisfied NAV user on the PC side I decided to go with NAV 9 for mac with my new iBook. I have tried running the scan three times. The first two I cancelled after 3 hours without completion. The scan runs slowly but just about grinds to a halt when scanning the python files (.pyc,.pyo, etc.). I am now in the middle of my third try and after 2 1/2 hours it is still going. I think it is shameful that Symantec would release this product as compatible with Panther when it clearly is not. The suggestions I have gotten from Symantec tech support have been worthless! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Real Time Spyware and Adware Protection
I own McAfee Internet Security Suite 2004 but I purchased the stand alone version of this McAfee AntiSpyware 2005 program even though basically the same program is bundled as part of the "Privacy Service Program" with McAfee Internet Security Suite 2004 v6.0 . I did not want to use the Privacy Service program at all so I figured this would work best for me. I also decided could also easily use this as a stand alone program in the future along with another company's antivirus program such as Symantec's Norton Antivirus.

This McAfee Antispyware program is very simple to use and it seems to work well. You can open up the program's display properties anytime and monitor its activity and you will see it working as it scans web pages in real time as you browse using Internet Explorer. You can also schedule system wide scans and it has customizable controls so you can enable trusted spyware or adware programs not to be blocked. The biggest drawback is that it does not automatically detect and remove tracking cookies. Its main advantage is realtime scanning and blocking of spyware and adware. Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware (basic) are both free to download and work very well also however those programs do not auto update and they don't do essential real time scanning to stop the spyware before it infects your computer. Spybot does have an immunize feature that helps block a pre-set number of common spyware/adware programs but this list is static while McAfee's program uses dynamic scanning with the latest automatically updated spyware/adware detections.

I would recommend you use all three antispyware programs. Download Spybot and Ad-Aware for free and also install McAfee Antispyware 2005 for real time scanning. In this age of spyware, adware, trojan horses, tracking cookies etc. you can't be too safe. I would also recommend a good firewall like Zone Alarm 4.x or the even more feature rich Zone Alarm Pro 4.x ( Zone Alarm 4 with internet cookie, popup, and privacy controls) . Use a good Antivirus program such as McAfee 2004, Norton 2003, PC-Cillin 2004, or Kaspersky.

One more highly rated antispyware program you might want to look at is Webroot's SpySweeper which has all the realtime scanning features of McAfee along with tracking cookie detection. SpySweeper is a seasoned antispyware program known to have one of the highest spyware/adware/tracking-cookie detection rates among all the anti-spyware programs. Although the McAfee Antispyware 2005 is still relatively new to the antispyware game compared to other programs, I would expect this recently released McAfee software to continue to improve this year as this program auto-updates itself with more advanced features and enhanced spyware detections. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, best backup program by far..
After reading the reviews in here with much hesitancy I bought the program over the weekend, and before I opened it went out to the Symantec website to check hardware compatability (which you should do with any software product these days just to be sure.)
I had used a prior version of Ghost and it was a little quirky (but it did work fine, with high quality cdr's) but 2003 seems to have fixed alot of problems and has some great new improvements. I started out simple and went for a straight image to CDR's.. while not the fastest method it worked without a hitch.. It also works great with USB external drives as well..much faster than cd's even on USB 1.. I've got 3 computers backed up on an 80GB external.. awesome! It does have limited DVD support as a few people mentioned but DVD's are new and it will take a little time to catch up.. I think the reason most people are having problems is not reading the manual, it is a complex program but simple at the same time.. All the answers are there if you look for them, too many people are just used to installing a program and figuring it out as they go along.. If you've ever experienced a hard drive failure or system crash without a backup (as I have) you quickly learn how important backups are.. With Ghost 2003 regular backups are a snap, get a USB drive and along with CDR's you can have 2 sets just in case..

5-0 out of 5 stars Ghost 2003, best hard drive image maker yet.
The new Ghost 2003 supports USB 1.1, 2.0 and 1394 Firewire hard drives and cdrw and dvd-rw drives. You can create a single floppy disk that will let you save a image of your hard drive to a 2nd partition of your hard drive, a 2nd hard drive, cdrw drives ( will span multiple cdr & cdrw discs), dvd-r drive, external usb 1.1 & 2.0 hard drives and 1394 hard drives.

You can restore you saved image from the same single floppy disk.

Ghost will create a virtual partition and boot to pc dos to image your hard drive without the use of a floppy. Caution, if you cannot boot to your hard drive, you must create a bootable floppy or cdrom to restore your image.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can Ghost 2003 make a bootable drive across a network?
I'm using these discussions to help me decide on purchasing Ghost 2003. What I need to do is change the old hard drive on my Notebook by moving the O/S and installed programs to new bootable hard drive. I would like to "image" or "clone" the Notebook's old drive over my home network to a new hard drive that is installed in an external enclosure and connected to a PC by USB or Fire Wire. I hope to end up with the new drive being an exact bootable copy of the old drive and to then install it in the Notebook. My 5 stars assumes that I can do this. I know that Ghost can "image" across a network to/from USB and Fire Wire but is the final restored/cloned drive bootable? Has anyone done this or is Ghost capable of doing this?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Ghost!
Great Product!

I had to recover my computer after a fatal error with a ghost image and it worked flawlessly. As for the comment made in a previous review, Ghost does not back up the MBR (master boot record) on your hard drive. It only images the drive that you specify. It's not that the images didn't work but Ghost doesn't back up the MBR. If you ever need to restore the master boot record you can use a bootable floppy with the FDISK command on it and restore it with the FDISK /MBR command. This will restore the MBR from the back up copy that is on the hard drive. Over all very pleased with the product and I always keep a ghost image on hand just in case.

1-0 out of 5 stars not a backup program
It is misleading to call this a backup program. The program doesn't "backup" files, as is generally understood. It images the disk. Disk copy programs can be had for a lot less. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

PartitionMagic is a lot more these days than a simple partitioning tool for hard drives. In fact, PartitionMagic 8.0 can repartition your hard drive, set up multiple operating systems, and even perform scheduled backups to protect your data.

The core program, which can be run from Windows or in DOS mode directly from a boot floppy, enables you to change the size of existing partitions, create new partitions, merge two partitions into one, and more. This is all achieved in a logical and straightforward way, using a new group of wizards and a number of safety checks to make sure you do what you intended.

Any of the changes you make occur without disturbing any data you already have on your hard drive. The program can handle IDE and SCSI hard drives, and this version adds external drives linked to USB 2.0 or FireWire ports. However, you will now need quite a bit of memory on your PC to run the program--128 MB in Windows XP, for example.

BootMagic is bundled with PartitionMagic 8.0, and is a well-featured boot manager that enables you to install several different operating systems on your PC and switch between them at startup.

Overall, PartitionMagic is a safe and effective way to protect your data and improve the efficiency of your PC. --Simon Williams, Amazon.co.uk ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!
I don't know why I keep hearing all these negative reviews complaining that the software doesn't work under Windows XP. I just bought a new dell 8300 with a 120GB hard drive, running Windows XP Pro. I was on the verge of completely reformating my hard drive so I could properly partition it. I was annoyed that I would have to spend hours reinstalling drivers and software, and I knew that my computer would never be the same as when it arrived here. Luckily, I spoke to one of my friends and he recommended PartitionMagic 8.0. After looking into the product, I almost didn't buy it because of the negative reviews. However, I decided to go for it anyway and I got the product. After I installed it, I installed the upgrade patch from their website. After watching the flash tutorial and using some of the help files, I knew exactly what to do. The program took me step by step through the process, showing me the changes that would occur once I gave it the go ahead. So, I resized my C Drive to 20gb, added a 1.5GB primary partition in front of it for my swap file, and divided the remaining space into two logical drives around 43gb in size. Then I crossed my fingers, clicked okay and the program restarted the computer to make the changes. About 30 minutes later, the process was done and I had no problems with it at all. Now I happily have all the partitions I wanted and I can begin working with the computer. Shame on Microsoft for not having a built in utility that does all that Partition Magic can do. Anyway, I highly recommened this program if you want to partition your hard drive without losing any of the data on it! This is a must for Windows XP users. Eventually, I'll probably use this software to add Linux also.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great product for people with DISK EXPERIENCE!
I've had great luck with PartitionMagic 7.0 on both Windows 2000 and Windows XP Professional. But after reading several negative reviews of PartitionMagic 8.0 with XP, I was a little nervous about buying and using it on my new PC.

This product works! This past weekend I partitioned my brand new Dell PC (Dimension 8300) flawlessly. My new Dell has the 2 SATA drives with the Promise card configured for RAID-1 (hardware mirrored). And who wants a 120GB "C-drive"?

The product worked just as advertised!

The product will usually warn you if you are about to do something catastrophic, but it isn't completely "novice proof". The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars is that PowerQuest (or Symantec, or whomever owns it now) doesn't make the product easy to use for those wanting multiple booting options - which is one of the things they claim on the box.

Making a single PC run multiple operating systems booting from different partitions SHOULD be a challenge, and it is. This product will make multi-booting easier, but don't expect it to make it simple. If this is your goal - (1) do your homework before you begin, and (2) backup everything you can't afford to lose!

4-0 out of 5 stars just get the patches and it works wonders
My linux partition recently ran out of space, so I decided to resize my dos (Win XP) partition and add space to the linux partition. I got PM8.0, and at first was very distressed to find out that PM did not work, giving an Error 1513. The next morning, I called the software sales at the symantec site and asked about this error. They forwarded me to a tech line (free) who forwarded me to another tech line (not free). I talked with the guy, told him the problem, told him the link for the patch at their web site was broken (google "Error 1513 Partition Magic" to get to the symantec error listing with patches), and within a couple minutes, he sent me an updated link to the patch (for FREE). I installed the patch, and was able to resize the partitions without a hitch (no data lost). The fact that Microsoft changed file formats (giving Error 1513) is not something PM has any control over, and they have provided the patches...

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome. And better yet, it even works.
This product does what is otherwise impossible: shrinks a partition without disturbing the data therein.
Also it works very fast! It takes just a minute or two to shrink or expand a partition.
It has always worked for me. If you wonder why you would need this software, don't worry about it. If you need it, you know it. And when you need it, this is the only program on earth that will do this work.
When you need it and it works it is AWESOME!

Here's an example:
Say you have a teaching lab with 8 computers. You want to use Power Quest Drive Image to create a clone of the hard disk on computer #1 on CD. Then every Friday night after class you can restore the image on all 8 computers and Monday morning all your computers are fresh and ready, regardless of what last week's students did.

Computer #1 has a 100 GB hard drive in a single partition, but only 1GB is actually in use. The rest is free space. Since Drive Image backs up a partition at a time, you will need enough CDs to hold 100GB of compressed data, even though most of it will just be zeros. That might take you many CDs. What you need is a way to shrink the partition size down to just the 1GB in use. Conventional tools will not allow you to do this....they erase all the data in the partition if you shrink it. That kills you! That forces you to back up all the data to another hard drive, delete the partition, recreate the partition to the 1GB size, then format the partition, then reload the data from the spare hard drive, if possible, then create your Drive Image CD, and then go to through the whole process again to expand the partition back. This could take all day.

With Partition Magic, you just insert a diskette and about two minutes later you are done shrinking the partition to the needed size! Snap your image CD and then fire up Partition Magic again and in another two minutes the partition is back where it started! With this technology available doing it the old way makes about as much sense as using a Radio Shack cassette tape player for data storage on your IBM-PC instead of a hard drive.

The former owner of this program, Power Quest, was granted several patents on this technique. Check it out at www.uspto.gov - it's fascinating reading. Paraphrasing their words: obviously this function is not easy since it took 15 years from the introduction of the IBM-PC for someone to invent it.

1-0 out of 5 stars PartitionMagic 8.0
This has to be about the worst thing I ever did to my computer in all my cyber history. I have a dual-boot system--Mandrake Linux and Windows 2000--and I suddenly needed to expand my C drive in Win 2000 in order to install a new program.

I bought PowerQuest PartitionMagic for the purpose, and then spent a frustrating night--till after 4:00 a.m., trying to get it installed and working. First off, it destroyed the first mount point for my Linux. After I got that fixed, and after several more problems, it took more than two hours to analyze and reconfigure about 6 Gb on my 28 Gb E partition. Except it didn't finish. Rather, it gave me an exception dump to the floppy with instructions to contact PowerQuest Technical support. Except PowerQuest doesn't exist any more. Symantec claims to be handling it. But Symantec wanted to charge me another $30 for technical help, on top of the $70 I just paid for the program the night before. I finally talked them out of that, on grounds I just wanted to know how to back out of the whole thing without wreaking even more damage, but the "help" they offered wasn't any help at all. I now have a partially crippled system until I can get rid of the PartitionMagic and repair the damage it did. I am filing with Symantec for a refund, and I hope never to have to deal with anything from PowerQuest/Symantec again in my life.

The irony of it is that I had a copy of SystemCommander v.7, buried since about two years. Just didn't take the time to hunt for it. I have used SystemCommander successfully for years, through a progression of upgrades. It does in five minutes what PartitionMagic couldn't do in more than two hours. And it has a backup key which allows you to safely undo any problems or mistakes back to a previous condition. By contrast, PartitionMagic gives you a warning that once you hit the "Apply" button, you're stuck with it. And if anything goes wrong you have to go into the Registry to do a manual repair--with all the problems and hazards that entails. SC also handles every concievable OS, where I can't see that PQ handles more than the most common ones. And the README.TXT file for PQ lists a whole string of things it can't do even in Win 2000 and XP.

My advice to anyone thinking of buying PartitionMagic ---- Don't. Buy SystemCommander instead. It doesn't have as pretty an interface, and it sometimes makes you think the process through, but it does the job with speed and safety. And the Tech people are MUCH nicer to work with. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for businesses with multiple computers to back up!
There's not much to go by in the item description given here, so visit this page to find out more: http://www.dantz.com/en/products/win_business/index.dtml. The Dantz website says that "Retrospect Multi Server is designed for a business protecting three or more servers. It provides licenses to protect an unlimited number of networked servers, desktops, and notebooks."

This software is easy to set up and use, and reliable so you'll know that your backup isn't going to be corrupt when you restore. Lots of people find out the hard way that not having a backup of your computer can be devastating, and in a business environment losing files can be make or break! When I recommend software for my friends, and I sometimes end up doing it AFTER they've lost everything because they had no backup, I recommend Retrospect, and I use it in the non-profits I consult for, who can't afford to replace their archives. Although this software is for Windows, it backs up networked computers running other platforms like MacOS and Linux. Dantz has been around for a long time, and has a great reputation. PCWorld recently said "Retrospect Professional remains the cream of the crop in desktop backup software." You'll be glad you're protected if you end up needing to restore. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
PDF Converter 2 Professional is an awesome product! I have been using it for a few weeks and it leaves Acrobat in the dust. I creates PDF files much quicker and with a lot less set-up and hassle. Why hasn't somebody created a product like this before?

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Adobe!
Our company has searched high and low for an alternative to Acrobat because we didn't like Adobe's arrogant take-it-or-leave-it attitude about pricing. We couldn't find a product that offered the same functionality from a reputable company until this came along. This PDF Converter product offered the features that almost everyone in our company needed and was much less expensive than Acrobat. When we pilot tested it, everyone found it easy to use. Based on that decision alone we swapped out Acrobat for PDF Converter and saved about $100,000. Now I think I need a raise!

5-0 out of 5 stars PDF Create rocks!
PDF Create rocks! As a student, I don't have much money and couldn't afford to spend $300 for Acrobat. My teachers wanted papers sent to them electronically in PDFs so I had to go to the library every time I needed to turn something in and use their computer to create one. It was really inconvenient, plus I couldn't go to the library late at night because it wasn't open. One of the staff told me about this product that would create PDFs for $50 from ScanSoft. I bought it and figured I'd just return it if it didn't work out. After I installed it I found it was really easy to use and saved me from having to go back to the library to create PDF files. It's the best $50 I've ever spent. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work with damaged drives
This turned out to be more money down the pit. A 250GB WD drive with 3 partitions failed on me, and this product was unable to get more than a few tiny (3MB or less) files from it. Data Rescue X has big problems when it hits a "bad" sector, locking up for a very long time. Out of 140 video files of 50MB up to 1.5GB, only about 8 seconds of the first one was recovered after about 10 hours of processing. In that time the "time left" counter just kept on going up and up until it was into the millions of minutes time left. It just couldn't get past the first file. Very disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS PRODUCT if you have a corrupt drive-
Data Rescue turned out to be the only product that would recover my drive after Panther ruined it (FireWire 800 drive was corrupted)... Norton wouldn't work, Diskwarrior failed... Data Rescue rocks, plain and simple-

5-0 out of 5 stars Panther mauled my drive- Data Rescue saved me--
Everyone knows that Panther will maul your FireWire 800 drive (corrupts it)... Data Rescue was listed on several sites as being the only thing that worked.. I thought, "Ha! I'll try out Diskwarrior..." --But even Diskwarrior failed...

Data Rescue DID turn out to be the only thing that would work to get my files back.. Awesome, awesome product-- I can't believe it--

5-0 out of 5 stars Recovery Champ
I have used this product twice now and both times it has surpassed my expectations.. No other product works, and then, BAM! this one works, sees the drive and mounts it, sees all the files... It's a beautiful thing- thank you Prosoft-

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Product I've ever Used
I tried ALL other titles, trying to get my IBM drive to mount and be able to recover the files from it- Nothing worked (DiskWarrior, Norton, Drive 10, etc)... This was the only thing that worked--- AWESOME--saved my butt- ... Read more
