3-0 out of 5 stars The famously broken bits are still broken.
Pointing out Word's faults is like pointing out the pyramids are crumbling--it may be true, but they're still going to be there. Still, Word's Master Document "feature" is still the surest way to document corruption. And you'd better track down the internet page that gives detailed instructions on the convoluted way you need to set up heading numbering if you want to keep your Word documents from corrupting.

And so on. I doubt anyone cares. Word is a fact of life, no matter if it's constantly falling to bits. The new version's XML support does give you a new path to recovering a corrupted document: saving to XML and then converting that file back to Word format has saved me some time on a couple of occasions.

We use Word because we have to. On those occasions when I don't have to, I use WordPerfect, because I like to actually produce things, not spend my time dealing with software problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Justified Upgrade for some, but not all
Word 2003 is more powerful than ever. Unfortunately, most of the new features are aimed primarily towards large business. As a result, many end-users simply won't need them (or be able to use them). The users who will benefit most from upgrading are corporate users or users purchasing bundles with new PCs.

Pros:

Instant Messaging support is now integrated with Office applications. However, only MSN messenger is used. Users who predominantly use Yahoo, trillian, jabber, or ICQ will not find any utility in this feature, without signing up for a messenger account.

The user interface has changed for the better, and matches the Windows XP interface better. Personally, I like it. Also, fonts are rendered better, and consequently documents will look better on laptops (no more jagged edges).

The Reading Layout feature splits the text into a two column format for easier reading (think newspaper).

If you have Microsoft Server and SharePoint services installed on your network, you can share and track changes to word documents. Nice feature, but requires a significant investment on server software.

When typing an hypertext link, word no longer reformats the font of the URL.

Cons:

Product activation, which requires network access.

All of the Office applications now have a blended help system that first checks help files online first, before getting local help files.

XML is useless for end users. Programmers who use Word to write XML will find that Word no longer tries to autocorrect much of the XML, but you will still have the annoying red underline on many of your XML tags because the spellchecker flags them as misspelled.

Still, I think it makes a worthy upgrade for 97/2000 users, but XP users will find the expense difficult to justify. More specifically, if you are an end user without a lot of Microsoft back end software installed on your network (Windows 2000/2003 Server, SharePoint services, etc.) I would think very carefully before upgrading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Keeps On Getting better
Word 2003 includes development tools that add dynamic features to documents making them powerful than ever. The power beneath all this is XML, allowing the user to embed components for updating data in documents such as stock quotes. Word 2003 offers simple, familiar yet improved features regular users are accustomed to. Majority of the features in Word 2003 are aimed primarily toward businesses and the Enterprise. But are still necessary for the average user because of the control over information across all the Office applications. Tools such as Information Rights Management (IRM), (this controls the flow of information to specific users), persons can be restricted on how they use your Office files; whether it's printing or sharing, very powerful! Reading view is an enhanced mode of print preview; documents are laid out in virtual pages reducing the need to print. The Task Pane is also improved by offering resources to look up information on a particular topic being typed; this is a feature across the core Office applications. Lots of other great features make Word 2003 a worthy upgrade.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just keeps getting better!
I was lucky enough to get Office 2003 before the official release date. Microsoft has done a nice job on the interface. Everything looks cleaner, and it will pop up useful sidebars on the righthand side (such as the clipbook for pasting items you have copied, help items, etc).

Another thing about the interface is that it meshes nicely with Windows XP themes. It will take a soft blue color when paired with Windows XP's default theme. All of the bars will be blue. This is nice on the eyes. The same goes with silver - everthing will match.

As for upgrading to 2003 from older versions... this is a tough call. If you have Word XP, I would be hard pressed to tell you to upgrade. Even Word 2000 does a fine job. I don't know if there are enough new bells and whistles in this to warrant upgrading. If you like to have the newest of everything however, this is the best word processor out there for PCs.

For those of you on a tight budget, thers is hope. As good as Microsoft Office products are, there is a FREE alternative. You may want to give OpenOffice 1.1 a download. It is completely free and open source, and most importantly, compatible with Microsoft documents (word, excel, etc). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great program
I absolutely love this program. Easy to install and fast. I have converted many documents to electrons using Paperport version #9 and I love it. It converts them to .pdf files quickly and automatically and they print as fast as any other documents. I am in the process of converting all my files from paper to electrons and this software is the most saytisfying I have purchased in quite a while. No installation problems (Win XP pro and a Pentium 4 - 2.8.). Absolutely love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good product, not perfect but improved over 6 & 6.
After reading all the negative review, I was going to pass on this version - that would have been a mistake. Installation on an XP Based Dell with HP7130 multi went quite smoothly. Loaded an update and rebooted - all were recognized and functioning quite smoothly. This was installed over Version 6.0 Paperport. While converting files from max to pdf was a bit of a problem - that was a one time (though fairly lengthy) procedure.
While it does create a default directory (which is differenet from the one I actually use) - in the options you can direct it to open up from where you left off. So I just directed it to my regular directory. The other one still is there but basically as an empty line.

Pros: PDF format is a big improvement of the max. Web capture to save my web pages in pdf files (either in color or B&W (save space).
Was considering buying a separate program to allow me to create pdf documents from MS Word. With this - you have a Paperport windows printer - that prints to a pdf format.
Only a couple of problems with system hanging up - vs. frequently on version 6.0.

Cons:
No serious ones so far - depending on my experience over the next 60-90 days the rating may go to either 3 or 5 stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars Paperport... a re-packaged dog called Pagis??
.
I first went the [Scansoft] Pagis route, putting thousands of business docs in their format, hoping to get better at using it and all the supposed features. I was dutifully getting each new version, adding the scarce patches, hoping that the next would fix some of it's many problems... but it never got much better.

I am coming to believe that after ScanSoft dumped all of the Pagis users to the wolves, they re-bagged it and called it PaperPort.

I say this because all the program problems are there, and the same poor customer support is back with it - problems are sometimes acknowledged but never really fixed. If all you do is store and search, it might be ok, but if you try to use other more advanced features, they often don't work.

Just enough is done to make it work, kind of, and that seems to be where it stands. If you look back at the horror stories of those who trusted Pagis, you might want to be careful that this situation, looking a lot like the one we Pagis users went through, doesn't turn out the same way.

I have a clean, modern system and a powerful machine, and it had problems with printing, scanning and keyword scans. Also, data was lost.

Deja Vue all over again... ;-(

With my last experience with Scansoft,I can't take that chance again, can you ??

4-0 out of 5 stars I think this software is great!
I scanned a decade worth of personal papers like tax returns and such into Paperport 9 Deluxe. I move around a lot and I am glad to turn all those papers into electrons. I have a HP All in One printer, the HP 5510. I have never had any problems with the software. It parks all your documents into thumbnails which are easy to view without opening them. The software is just basically like having a big file cabinet. The only two critisms I can make is one: saved web pages into PDF do not come out very good. The text in a saved web page looks sloppy. And for me the web capture capability does not scroll the page down to capture the whole page like it is supposed to. It always only captures the visible portion of what is on the monitor. Paperport is making me buy PDF Create when I shouldn't have to. (It better work better!) Secondly, I wish Paperport had some backup capability built in.

1-0 out of 5 stars Visioneer is trash
Great scanner, terrible software. Unfortunately, after the acnner works great for 6 months, the software stumbles and then errors and closes every time it is accessed. Visioneer is well aware of this and provides zero support for "older models" and requires customers to purchase new software. From what I have read on the web sites about Visioneer, the upgrades and new software fairs no better. Beware. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars works for me!
I do some pretty arcane dictation with lots of technical vocabulary, and have found the system up to my demands. I have worked at training the system, and it keeps on improving. I do find some of the interfaces a bit awkward to work with compared to the system I use with my PC (Naturally Speaking Standard Edition), but then, I've worked with that system somewhat longer. If the recognition of iListen improves with use as well as Naturally Speaking has, I will change my rating to 5 stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars Be glad I didn't enter this with iListen
I purchased iListen about three years ago. I found that it might have been useful for verbal commands to control computer functions, but it was useless for dictation. I upgraded to version 1.2.1, patiently went through at least three, new "training" sessions, and still was unable to create useable text via verbal input. When iListen kept sending me e-mail solicitations, I offered to upgrade if they could demonstrate that they had improved accuracy. They replied, "Because there are so many variables, and everyone has a different definition of what is acceptable results, all sales of iListen software are final."

My definition of acceptable dictation was that accuracy was sufficient to permit replication upon proof reading. I would accept errors, but not so different from what I had said that I could not reconstruct my text from its translation. It never even came close. Perhaps my voice is incompatible with iListen, and maybe it will translate your speech accurately. In either case, remember, all sales are final. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This is the only game in town for a general Mac utility
In an earlier review I lamented how Techtool had seemed degraded in its performance since its upgrade to vers. 4.0 and Mac OS X compatibility. I have since learned that Symantec, maker of Norton Utilities, has indeed decided to no longer upgrade their general utility program. (According to news reports, they will continue to upgrade their virus and Internet Security software.)

So what does this mean for Mac users? For one, DiskWarrior is a must have. As for Techtool, there's almost no choice - you have to have a general utility that's more powerful than Apple's rather weak First Aid. Here's hoping that Micromat comes up with a good update to Techtool and gets it back to the days of when it was arguably the best utility for the Mac.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Micromat's best effort
I've been using Macs and utility programs such as Techtool and Norton for about a decade now.

Through the years I would say that Norton Utilities and Techtool have traded back and forth in the top position as the best utility to own. As a fan of Techtool 3 I would say that Micromat had the better product for several years.

I can't say that now.

Running a B&W upgraded to a 500 MHz G4 with ample RAM I've yet to find Techtool 4.0.4 useful - under either Mac OS 10.2 or 10.3. My first major problem Techtool couldn't fix and I quickly purchased a copy of DiskWarrior which, although slow, fixed the problem. But DiskWarrior only fixes the disk directory. You need a broader utility such as Techtool or Norton for general errors.

Now I've got some new problems with my hard drives (I have three in my machine). Techtool says it found the errors and, if I want them fixed, I have to redo the test with the "repair on" button checked. Well, the button _was_ checked. Infuriating.

Overall, I'd say that Techtool 3 was a far better product. The interface seemed far more friendly and you knew that when you told the program to automatically fix errors that it would do so. Unfortunately, Vers. 3 isn't meant for OS X.

I'm giving Vers. 4 three stars, not because of what it has done, but because I assume it will earn its keep eventually - or perhaps they'll release an update to this version which will address these problems. In any case, you never can have too many disk repair utilities. Still, I think it's time to venture back to Norton to see what they've got cooking. It certainly can't be any less functional and helpful than this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Safe surfing for life?
I bought this software as I was getting more and more worried about the threat of viruses infecting my home PC. My workplace has always used McAfee and I had always found it very easy to use and we have had no problems with viruses so far. So I invested in McAfee at home. After a few niggles installing the Virus Scan and the Firewall Plus I must say I am very pleased. The software runs quietly on my PC, only alerting me if anything suspicious happens and the Firewall blocks tens of events entering my PC everyday. The Security Center has a full analysis of what exactly has been blocked from your PC so you can investigate further if you wish. If you value your PC, like me, you really do need to protect it and this software is a good place to start.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy McAfee - look elsewhere!
I purchased this McAfee Kit that included both Personal Firewall and VirusScan to run on my WinXp P4, 512 system from a physical store (one of those fantastic discount warehouses) The software NEVER worked!

I installed the software from the disk as instructed; however, as soon as I went online it started attempting to verify my subscription. This process never worked; no matter what actions I took the product never appeared on my online MyAccount page and therefore never functioned as designed.

I contacted the McAfee online help desk which quickly informed me that they would only be able to resolve this issue over the phone. To my surprise (disgust) this phone help service is a PAID service. That's right, you need to pull out your credit card and pay just to talk to a help desk associate in some far off land.As a sucker that I am, I paid for a block of time to attempt to resolve this installation issue. It was like throwing good money after bad. This support desk promised emails back and never sent. Then on subsequent calls they promised call backs; which also never happened. After spending $30 on support calls I gave up!

I have serious doubts about this company as they DO NOT STAND behind their products.I suggest you look elsewhere when looking to secure your computer.

Also, don't get lured in by the promised rebates. After 5 months I am still waiting!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware of McAfee Internet Security Suite 2005
I purchased Internet Suite 2005 as an upgrade to 2004 - which incedentally worked very well. The same can not be said for the 2005 version. I have never come across a piece of software that is so unready for general release. The un-install is flawed and losses all previous settings. The software is full of bugs and inconsistances for which I have been on the phone for approx 2 hrs to attempt to fix (insist tha McAfee phone you back to save the £1 per minute charge)- e.g. - parms lost on update, permissions issues for XP sub users, un-install of previous versions does not work correctly leaving bits of the previous version arround causing problems with the install and the update of your registration - result - product can potentially unregister itself at the end of life of the previous version. Shredder does not work correctly - script errors. One of their fix instructions is to turn off the firewall and download a fix - so putting your pc at risk while the download occurs! I could go on and on. I'm sure they will update and produce fixes but at present the product, in my view, posses a risk.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works fine, but
Works fine for me and I am not very computer literate. Much better than my Norton, which I couldn't get to work right and had to uninstall. [...] I was plunged into a Kafkaesque nightmare of paperwork after sending in what I thought was exactly what they wanted, and am about to give up and kiss the thrity bucks goodbye.

1-0 out of 5 stars Works until your run into a problem.
I would give them0 stars if it weren't because I don't have that choice.
I got their yearly subscription and used the product for more than a year without any major problem, except for minor annoyances.
Since the past week I am not able to verify my subscription because of a bug in their "subscription verify system".
The worst part is that their technical support is clueless and they will ask customers to do manual uninstalls and play around with the registry, which is really scary.
At this point I am considering removing the product, cancelling my subscription, and moving to another virus scanner and personal firewall.
Too bad that McAffee does not provide a better customer support, and for basic and necessary products such a virus scanner and firewall they should pay more attention , just having a chat support and a forum is not good enough if they are no effective. I don't think the paying service would help either. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the price!
I found this kit well worth the price. It supports most newer model phones. However, the features offered in the product depend on the model of your phone, so find out if your phone support the all the features.
Even though the product doesn't come with a detailed manual, you can always print it out online. I was able to transfer images and ringtones to my phone without any problems even without detailed instructions because the screens are pretty self explanatory.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful tool, but not quite universal
This kit supports most newer phones. It comes with two USB half-cords, and several phone half-cords. One USB cord is actually a serial converter, the other one is passive. The software is an all-in-one package, offering phonebook/ringtone/image/calendar sync and internet dialer, unlike FutureDial's Snap products. The software is well laid-out, however, not all phones support all sync functions. Also, some phones don't support two-way communication - you may be able to upload images, but you can't retrieve them. I gave the product only 3 stars for two reasons. First, the website doesn't mention that some information cannot be pulled from the phone - it can only be pushed to the phone. Second, the package I received had a defective serial converter USB cable - and after having to sit through three customer service reps, who may or may not know what they are doing, on a line that was busy for most of the day, I had to spend more money sending the cable in for exchange. The price is right for all the cables that you get, but there's free bitpim software out there that does the same, and more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great firewall for the price...
I bought this Firewall through the Zone Alarm web site and this firewall works well. The firewall will pop up a message window showing the serverity of the problem. For intrusion, a program requesting access and programs that have repeatly asked for access (On the popup you can allow, deny or permanently allow a program access).

(This program does not hog the system memory as some other products do...)

Another nice feature offered is a log of the instrusion and the IP address of the intruder. The program shows how many intrusions were blocked and how many attacks were serious.

Also, the tool allows users who are novices and advanced users to use the software effectively according to their experience.

In addition, the tool comes with a Firewall (made by CA) which works well.

Overall, this a great Firewall and I recommend this product to anyone. ... Read more
