4-0 out of 5 stars PocketMoney vs. Pocket Quicken
PocketMoney was the first software I purchased for my Palm IIIxe. It is easy to use, has a very friendly icon-based account list. Entering new transactions is very intuitive, very similar to Quicken on the desktop.

If you need to track your spending and only need to transfer data to your desktop on a rare basis, this is probably the best software for you.

However, you need to know that transferring data is fairly complex. If you are not comfortable using directories and subdirectories on your hard drive, you may want to consider Pocket Quicken instead.

Pocket Quicken has much better conduits (how data is transferred between your PDA and desktop). Everything is updated automatically, every time you hotsynch. Even though Pocket Quicken isn't as refined and easy to use as Pocket Money, it is still a very good program. But its weaknesses are more than made up for by the automated transfer of data.

But before you buy either product, go to Handmark's website for PocketMoney, and LandWare's website for Pocket Quicken. Download the 14-day free trial versions and play with them for a couple of weeks before you purchase the full version (here at Amazon.com)

4-0 out of 5 stars Second Best Personal Finance Software for PDAs
PocketMoney was the first software I purchased for my Palm IIIxe. Subsequent upgrades (free) made it seem like an even better deal. It has an excellent, icon-based account listing (better than Pocket Quicken). And entering transactions is also very intuitive with auto-completion, just like the desktop version of Quicken (also better than Pocket Quicken)

If you are looking for software to track expenses - an electronic checkbook register - and don't plan to make frequent transfers to Quicken or MS Money, this is the best program for you!

However, I never liked the way I had to import/export data manually to Quicken. It was a very tedious process to get information from the PDA to the desktop and vice versa. If you are not very computer literate, you may have serious problems with the process. If you need to keep your PDA and desktop versions of Quicken/MS Money up to date, then you ought to consider Pocket Quicken.

I recommend before you purchase, download the 14-day trial version of both programs from the websites and play with them ... ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Stay on the scene like a fax machine! If James Brown has a Palm organizer, you know he's using Mobile WinFax software to close business deals and hire lawyers. All he needs is a modem and a free telephone line to send and receive faxes from anywhere in the world. All the benefits of faxes--signatures, diagrams, and other personal touches--are included with all the convenience of e-mail. Store messages for future or repeated use, attach large files easily, and send to as many recipients as you can think of--all with only a few keystrokes.

You can import files from your main computer's WinFax PRO, or create your own on the fly--either way, professional-looking documents appear in your correspondents' machines. The software is remarkably intuitive and easy to use; you'll be faxing in minutes. Free yourself from dependence on stationary computers or fax machines--install Mobile WinFax, and make your organizer the hardest working Palm in show business. --Rob Lightner ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Caution! This product is discontinued by the publisher!
From [the website]:

"Mobile WinFax 1.0 has been discontinued - effective as of May 24th.

"Fee-based technical support will be available until June 30th, 2000. On-line technical support will be available until August 21st, 2000. There will be no replacement product."

As a Palm VII/VIIx user, I would strongly suggest wireless users try J2.com or other products available at rovenet.com, but there is no Symantec support for this product. (Which is completely typical for Symantec; see Norton CrashGuard and Norton Desktop under extinct-ware.) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Some good titles
It's a pretty good card. All of the titles are fairly easy to learn how to play.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Fun Bunch of Games!
I love a lot of the games on this card...I didn't expect to be hooked...but I am...I thought Atum was dorky when I saw it but I've spent many a late night connecting the little molecules...Checkers is fun but the Zire 71 I've been using it on chokes in any level higher than level 1 - it takes the computer awhile to compute its move in levels 2-5. I've enjoyed Mah Jong although the tiles are a little hard to read and some look alike and I've read elsewhere it isn't real Mah Jong, but I don't know the difference. :-) The casino games I've played briefly but they aren't as much fun. Pool is nice but you quickly learn to beat the Palm, even on more difficult levels. And of course, SimCity is cool and it is pretty expansive. I've never played it on a regular computer before, but it was really detailed (in my opinion) and was pretty fast....All in all, I think the card will keep you happily occupied during long waits at the bank, post office, and airports...

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Fun and a Good Deal, Too!
One of my favorite computer games is Shanghai: Second Dynasty. The version on this card is obviously derived form that version of Shanghai. It really looks beautiful with the green embossed tiger and dragon background. I miss the cool music and the fortune cookie, but you can't have everything. I would try putting together some nice Chinese music on mp3's to play in the background, if mp3's didn't use so much RAM. (As an aside, I appreciate that Activision and Landware don't call it Mah Jong. This is NOT Mah Jong! Stop calling this type of game Mah Jong!!! Mah Jong is completely different.) I tried SimCity and it seems to be fairly close to the full computer version, but I haven't really used it very much, yet. The Atum game is very addictive. It can also be very frustrating when it gives you a long string of the same atum. I have had a bit of difficulty using the backgammon game. It doesn't seem to work in a very intuitive way. The checkers is fine - if checkers is your thing - it works pretty much like I expected. I can't say how smart it is, since I'm not an expert. The chess is pretty basic. I bought a more specialized separate chess game that has a lot more features, but it cost half the price of this whole card. I'm not much for slot machines, poker or blackjack, so I won't comment on those. Ricochet is a very cool looking brick breaking game. It is very nicely done. The only thing I don't like is that the background is almost as dark colored as the bricks, so sometimes the bricks are hard to see and I'm using a Tungsten T that has a pretty nice screen. 9-Ball is a fairly decent pinball game. Pinball is the one type of game that just doesn't work well on a Palm. I've tried all the versions I can find and 9-ball is one of the best. But, that's not saying much. I guess the computing power required for really good pinball is still too much for Palm machines. Strangely, though, the Billiards game does work well. Surprisingly well! And it actually has good sound effects! Not bad! Okay. So, all together that's 12 games. Several really good ones, a couple so-so. I guess it's not such a bad deal. What I realy like is that it doesn't use up my precious RAM. Figuring in the value of a small SD card, the Palm Game Essentials Card is actually a pretty good deal! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Be Careful
This product has many wonderful maps to use with a COMPUTER but BEWARE you can't load the maps onto a GPS so unless you want to carry a laptop on your next hike - skip it. The product information is misleading by stating the program has the the ability to load maps to a "device" apparently this does not include a GPS so I ask what's the point? What a disappointment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too many CDs!
Which would you prefer? 17 different CDs to keep track of and constantly switch in and out of your computer, or 1 or 2 DVDs? This product may be good, but I made a mistake by not waiting until it came out on DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Topo
I bought this for desert and mountain 'off road' exploration and camping. In that capacity, I am completely satisfied with its seemless scrolling, map labelling and GPS downloading features. I can plan my routes, mark and print the highly detailed maps, and have it ready to go. Upon return, I can add small non-descript roads, trails, mine locations, etc that I find in the field via my GPS. I used to spend 20 to 30 dollars for paper topo's for outback trips. Now, I'll literally save hundreds with this software. And because this software doesn't require mega 3D computer capabilities, I actually installed this software in an old Pentium 1, with a 130 meg processer, and it works flawlessly! Now, I have put my old, and (formerly) no longer used computer to work in the garage for my trip planning. Something I couldn't do with the Regional State Series because of it's computer system requirements. The only potential drawback to this software is the lack of level 5 mapping. This software actually goes to 1:25,000 scale, but the only difference I can ascertain from pure 'level 5' is the missing gridlines and details. This system includes elevation cross section detail, and for my purposes, that makes up for any missing level 5 details. Comparatively, Delormes Atlas's are 1:150,000 scale, this software is full level 4 or 1:100,000 scale... and 1;25,000 as well, it's awesome. And if you really need to get closer, you can zoom the area you want. Overall, if you must have the level 5, which is 1:25,000 scale with level 5 detail, get the regional or state series sofware. But for the price, with 50 states of seemless 1:100,000 topo, and the system requirements, this software is exceptional. Tred Lightly! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars didn't work on handspring treo 600
This looked really fun, and the requirements said a palm os 5 device with an sd/mmc slot, but unfortunately, it didn't work on my treo 600 handheld. Each application would say "Error loading ARM code" when invoked. Also, it appears you need to cart the card around with you because you can't copy the applications onto your handheld, they have to stay on the card. :(

5-0 out of 5 stars Sonic is Back!
Who could imagine that my Palm could be so much fun! What was once my calendar and date book has now become a replacement for my GameBoy - thanks to the Sega Classics card. These games are just like the originals on GameGear. I recommend this product highly. It really helps time fly while waiting around airports.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great games, great value
These Sega titles are loads of fun with great gameplay, high-res color graphics, and sound effects for a PDA. The games are almost exact replicas of the original titles on Sega's Game Boy-like Game Gear (in fact, I believe they are ports using an emulator), then they will bring back some fond memories if you were a Game Gear fan. Even if you didn't play these on a Game Gear, these games are top notch for a PDA.

...

The games are:
Sonic the Hedgehog: original high-speed platform game
Shinobi: decent side scrolling fighting game
Super Columns: great Tetris-like puzzle game
Shining Force II: The Sword of Hajya: a role-playing game (adventure game kind of like Dungeons and Dragons but with more colorful characters)

If you have a Palm OS 5 device (like a Zire 71, Tungsten C, or Tungsten T) and like games, this is a must have. Note that this card does not work on Sony OS 5 devices, which use Memory Stick. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
If you wait in line all the time, or if you are at airports all the time, buy this card. It will occupy your time. Both games are identical to their physical counterparts and they are color as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Games
Both Monopoly and Scrabble work great. I have a color PalmOS PDA and love both of them. I was afraid that the screen size would limit the functionality, but that turned out not to be the case. In fact, I think it is easier than on my PC screen programs with 4 and 16 times the number of pixels -- superior design went into implementing it on the PDA version!

My son, 9 years old, also loves playing both. Of course, he sometimes hits the "accept word" (after spell-checker flags it) when he spells words wrong just to get high points (e.g., "XJQVY"), but he usually spells them right and this helps in his vocabulary and spelling.

Monopoly is just as easy and has helped my game playing tremendously. I am not thinking about going pro, but if I were, I would certainly have this game in my arsenal. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfectly adequate - I'm now a gambling fool
I was surprised at the number of negative reviews here for this Game Pak - I just received it as a gift and have been playing the games frequently over the last few days, and I'm pretty satisfied. The card installed and ran the games flawlessly, and the games themselves are simple but highly addictive and entertaining. (Apparently there is a memory leak in Zap!2016, but I'll admit I haven't played that one enough to notice. Hey, I have a slot machine to beat here.)

Let's face it - the Palm is not a high-end gaming platform, and even m505 owners should not expect a stupendous experience. The best games for this size screen are the simplest ones. Klondike is the same as always, with slightly nicer graphics but no scoring. Chroma is a nice three-in-one package of chess, checkers, and backgammon (great for 2-person games on long trips), Vegas Slots and Blackjack are faithful reproductions of their real-life counterparts and SimCity is very basic but contains the essence of the original (I imagine this one is much better in color).

I had none of the technical difficulties of the other reviewers, and I have no problem with the fact that this card is a) only 10% full, and b) thirty bucks. A collection of games like this probably pays the developers a small fraction of the retail price, and we should be supporting people like them if we want better games in the future. I wish they could find a way to selectively unlock the SD card though, so the saved games would also live in there and the memory footprint of the whole pak (er, minus the patches) would be zero.

Bottom line: It's a fine price to pay for a collection of fun, good-looking games. Not perfect, but still very much worth it.

3-0 out of 5 stars What i found about this card
First i have to say that i don't have this card, but i was thinking on buy one, what did stop me?, well first it says that have the game "zap 2016", that version of the game is only for 16 bits colored handhelds (i have a m500 handheld, as you know it is a grey, non colored handheld), after that i went to palm.com and try to find out a little more, and back there i saw all the games included on this card, i was dissapointed, it have really great games, like zap and simcity, but the others ones are not the kind of game i like the most, well, i also have to say that if you buy this card you will save money and you wont sacrifice any memory on your palm. Underneath it all it is a good product if you like casino's games, but be carefull, i didn't continue investigating about this card so i dont know if all the games will work on a non colored palm, maybe they will... or maybe not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good alternative
I think that this was a good choice, because you can erase games of your Palm and free space. Remember, Palm is not a toy. You will not have a Gameboy Advance in your hands if you purchase this Game Card. But I am sure that this can keep you entertained in your free time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Compilaton of Games
The majority of the games are absolutely great. There are few that are dated, but the card is definately worth the price. Great way to pass the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny...
This palmpack card is worth every penny. I bought it mainly for travelling. We live in Europe and do a lot of long drives so this definitely keep us entertained. My dad played chess from Naples to Austria. My husband is highly addicted to Simcity, he wouldn't give it up!? and I personally liked bubblet. This will keep you entertained for hours. It's definitely better than the games in our cell phones! :) ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Suite for Teachers...hmmm
I am a new teacher and very much into technology; I use my Treo 650 for everything else and decided...why not for work?I purchased and downloaded this software, thinking, this WILL make my life easier.
After previewing and using the software, I realized not too long after that something really important was missing. There was no place to capture or measure student grades!!!Very dissappointing...how can this package have an application to remember the names and schedules of other teachers, but no grading system?Very dissappointing...how can this package have application to note methods of discipline and no grading system?

I think the writers went into a great deal of detail without remembering to handle an essential basic...grading.

Teacher's P.E.T is cheaper and looks like it helps to grade, moitor student attendance and keep records of pertinent student info! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars AWEASOME! But one or two drawbacks.....
This thing is AWEASOME! I alwyas am in situations where people want to know how to define a word. This thing works PERFECTLY! It's also brand new so all the words I know are in it. Nothing is left out. It includes all of those dirty words for you people who have to have a dictionary w/them :-p.

For it's size and content i rate this thing 4 stars. Unfortunetly it could do w/some color for you people who have to have Color in everything, like me. It also includes no pictures but thats ok. It loads a little slow like all cards you slip into the expansion slot but yoru talking maybe 5 seconds to open the dic. or thes. which isn't really a big deal.

I highly recommend this thing, though if palm wanted it to get 5 stars, they have to work on color.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very functional and informative
this is the main reason why I went with a Palm handheld rather than with the Sony models, which have palpably better picture.

The only idiosyncrasy preventing me from awarding this little pack a five star rating is that it's rather slow, but this is expected.

Overall this is a fine product and it sure beats carrying an incomplete little pocket dictionary or a prodigious, bulky, complete edition of Merriam-Webster's tome. Oh, and there's also a thesaurus too, but I never use it, so it would have been better for users like myself if there were a separate card option that contained the dictionary only.

2-0 out of 5 stars Get the newer version!
Palm is now selling the 11th edition of Merriam Webster dictionary, and with rebate, the cost is less than this one. It might even be in color.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll never believe how often this comes in handy!!!
You'll never believe how often this comes in handy. I use this all the time to get the correct spelling of a word or to look up a definition. I got if for only occasional reference but ended up using it much, much more than I thought I would. It's so fast and easy! Definitely one to keep with you all the time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stopped working on me
I bought this and used it occasionally for a few months. After this I found it would not work anymore, any attempt to open either the dictionary or the thesaurus just gave me a blank screen followed by a return to the launcher. Attempts to get support faile to generate any response. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars German is a little lacking
I bought this card primarily for German, but was disappointed to find out that the German words are not listed with their gender. All German words have a gender (masculine, feminine and neuter) and you need to know the gender in order to use the proper article. In German the article is pretty important for effective communication. Other than that, the quantity of words and useful phrases is pretty good. I also like the functionality and navigability of the software.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product!
This is a great card. I've used it a number of times on business trips to Europe. It's so much easier than carrying a different dictionary for each country (i.e., one for Spain, one for France, etc.). Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Premium Provider, Great Data
This card is great! I don't know if you noticed, but the provider of the content on the card is Franklin Electronic Publishers, the leader in handheld translating software! I haven't seen any other products that can translate words not only from English to other languages and back, but between those other languages. This is a must buy for teachers, students, and travelers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Better products available on software
The content is not bad for this add-on card, but there are a lot of better alternatives out there. My favorite is Qvadis Lexica, for example, which has available translation options between English and Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese. The Qvadis user interface is superior, and you can add your own words and edit definitions on the go. It is software, not an SD card, but a better buy, in my opinion. This is the kind of program Palm should have included in this PalmPak card.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but could be better...
This works great for translating words, but I've had some trouble with complete sentences. With my knowledge of the language, you would need to know what order to put your words to make anyone understand you. Therefore, it's good for basic refesher or just looking up words, but not for real communication. It does give tenses, which is helpful. Overall, it was worth it, based on the other options out there. ... Read more
