1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor documentation
This software package promises a lot bug has no documentation.
I purchased the standard package and tech support sent me training CD's (for a price!) that were for professional. The GUI's don't match so I couldn't follow the training. I also can not use this because CD7 software is not working properly and could not get any help tech support. Save your money and don't buy this.

2-0 out of 5 stars Was this program created in another language and translated
It would seem that this software would do for the beginning CAD user, but the training program (Supposedly "interactive" but not so on my Windows ME system. An enabling file "shimgw.dll" corrupted my operating sysytem so badly I had to do a reinstallation)... is full of "unclear and non-operable" instructions... at least for me! There is no free tech support! The terms used are strange to say the least. "Explode" means "Ungroup", etc. There are no manuals to purchase except on from the manufacturer for [money] which I'm hesistant to buy because it (too) may be full of the same "unclear and non-operable" instructions. I'm a new purchaser and may become more enthusiastic after this painful and time-consuming learning curve...

4-0 out of 5 stars TurboCAD 7 is great on features, poor on documentation
I had great hopes for TurboCAD 7, but was disappointed to find that the user manual was mostly dedicated to one 2D drawing, and how to use the included FloorPlan 3D features. IMSI advertises the software (including in the box illustrations) as being great for mechanical 3D drawings, but gives you precious little help in learning to use those functions, unless it is to draw floorplans, and 3D housing designs. If I'd wanted to buy FloorPlan 3D, I would have bought separate architectural design software.

Their excellent included training module is a come-on to BUY two more modules, locked on the CD. They take you part of the way there, and then you find yourself at a virtual toll booth.

I know the capabilities are there. I came to Amazon.com hoping to find books on TurboCAD 7, but there seem to be none available. If I ever learn to use the program's powerful features, I'll upgrade to the new version 8, now available. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars VAIO Users
This software came bundled with my VAIO (PCV RZ14G) but lacks a few functions that comes with this download... namely Dolby Prologic II. Instead, i've installed an Audigy sound card and bought a set of Logitech Z680 speakers (with Dolby Prologic II & DTS encoder). I have the latest drivers for my sound card installed and all my games sound flawless! Everything seems to work fine until you listen very closely to the background music on DVDs using PowerDVD. The voices coming from the center speaker are crystal but the background music faintly stutters and skips. I've downloaded updates from the Sonystyle website but unfortunately wasn't a fix for this. The Cyberlink PowerDVD website sadly wasn't much help either. I guess i'll just have to wait for a new patch from Cyberlink to solve this issue. ...P>To conclude though, feature rich and combined with user friendly interface easily makes this everyone's choice for playing DVDs on PCs. A must have for PC movie buffs! My VAIO came with a remote and works really well with PowerDVD btw!

3-0 out of 5 stars Excelent but there is a catch!
I was just to buy this DVD decoder after my friend showed me how cool it is. I watched several DVDs using this decoder. it realy is great great great . I wanted to buy is but one thing kept me away. That is the number of times you can install it. I read the comment above and then declined to do so. I wanted to contact the company regarding that , I mean if they have any written info about it but no contact address. If you are sure you don't need to install it more than 3 or 4 times...go for it you will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use great features!
Powerdvd which is the most popular dvd software and for good reason. The interface is great and simple to use. It is very stable and provides seamless naviagtion when you want to move through your dvd. It also has some great sound features (that some software dvd players don't) so that you can get the most out of your sound card and speakers. it has support for dolby surround, pro logic and all of those other ones. One other great feature is the paental controls that let you set exactly what each user can and cannot watch and password protect someone from changing it. The simple interface is also flexable letting you change certain functions and displays and is even skinable!

3-0 out of 5 stars Software Cheating
Power DVD XP standard is a nice program. But there is a catch. You can't install the program more than 4 or 5 times. I installed WindowsXP Last month. It won't boot.It locked up on booting. I reinstalled Couple of times. Each time I had to re install Power DVD XP 4.0. I could not install poer dvd. Because I exceeded the number of times that the the software can be installed. They should say before it is sold.

4-0 out of 5 stars It works for me
I have being using MSP 6.5 DC for the last six months with great results. It is definately not for the beginner but the features for the cost are excellent. The manual is a bit sparce so I would invest in the Video warriors book or "Getting results" to help get into the product. A very stable platform to edit on with easy to use video capture and basic output to DVD. If you want a full featured DVD program I suggest you capture and edit with MSP 6.5 DC then use Ulead DVD Workshop to burn DVD's.
If this company had a better manual and product support I would give it 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars liked the toy
Some say that it's a bit expensive but i don't think so. I'm not a professional but i think that it's user friendly and that means, time saving.
Allthough it doesn't have CG infinity, you still get instant playback. Transition effects and video filters are lower than the "pro" version.
The real time voice recording to the scenes is cool, full DV and MPEG-2 support increases the vision quality on TV monitors.
As i said i'm not a pro but, the way it makes you feel powerful; i am gona say i liked the toy.. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

If you're looking for a cheap and easy way to effectively transfer your video to DVD, Ulead's DVD MovieFactory is a software package worth looking into. The reasonably priced DVD MovieFactory provides a user-friendly interface that lets you go from digital video (DV) to DVD, VCD, or SVCD in three easy steps.

Upon launching DVD MovieFactory, you're presented with three authoring options to choose from: capturing video, authoring menus, or burning disc images. DVD MovieFactory can capture both digital and analog video to a hard drive using any IEEE 1394 capture card. But, DVD MovieFactory works best with digital camcorders because it can create scenes based on time-code information, thus providing greater accuracy when editing and trimming video.

The Video ToolBox lets you create movies by following a simple workflow of capturing video, editing video, and exporting video. This format facilitates and expedites the video capture process and enables you to concentrate on the creative side of things. As soon as the video capture is complete, you'll need to trim, arrange, and render your video work for file output. You can also output your project in various media formats, and perform batch conversions to MPEG format on finished video clips to reduce repetitive work.

Once the files have been rendered and created, you can start creating DVDs, VCDs, and SVCDs. Once again, Ulead provides an easy-to-follow wizard-type workflow that walks you through the DVD authoring process. Choose from an array of prefabricated menu templates, background images, and audio clips to create interactive scene menus for your DVD production. For greater personalization of the navigation menus, use your own images and music files. Before you burn your movies onto DVD, use the playback simulation to preview the video file and your navigation menus. DVD MovieFactory supports a number of video formats, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and QuickTime.

As a bonus, the Ulead Photo Express package is included with the DVD Movie Factory. This package includes a wide array of photo editing tools and photo sharing options such as e-mail and online sharing. You can even use templates to create your own CD labels and covers.

Ulead's DVD MovieFactory offers a nice DVD authoring application at a reasonable price. The easy-to-use wizard-type workflow lets you work quickly and effectively with your video content. The ability to create interactive menus and author DVDs with minimal headaches and eye-popping results make the DVD MovieFactory a bargain-basement steal. --Rich Ting ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best low-priced DVD authoring solution available...
Before I purchased this product, I was attempting to use Impression 2.1 and My DVD 3.0 to author DVD's using my HP DVD 100i DVD+RW recorder. Using these programs, I found the task of authoring DVD's to be difficult and almost impossible. However, after I found MovieFactory by Ulead, I have had ZERO problems authoring DVD's for home use. This program makes capturing, editing, and burning DVD's extremely easy and user-friendly. While I have not tried the VCD and SVCD authoring modules of the program, I have no reason to believe they would work any differently, as they use the same engine.

Bottom line, if you are using the equipment I am using and mentioned above, you MUST have this software to simplify your DVD authoring. Before purchasing this program, I was disheartened to say the least as the process was extremely cumbersome. Now, however, I am burning DVD's like crazy. This software makes it easy!

2-0 out of 5 stars Can't create DVDs over 4GB
I spent days trying to find why my program was crashing while creating a Image file to burn on DVD. I tried almost all available upgrades for Windows XP Professional, DirectX, etc, etc but this thing kept crashing. Finally, I found that it can't create files over 4GB on FAT32 disk drive. Which means that all blank DVDs you buy will have to have almost 0.5 GB wasted if you have to use this software.

Another major drawback I saw with this otherwise very friendly interface is, it creates TITLES and not CHAPTERS for each file you add to the list of video files to make DVD. The drawback with this is if you select a chapter from menu, it plays only that chapter and comes back to the parent menu. This gets really annoying and I am currently so frustrated that I am already looking to replace this [money ammount] software for which I fortunately paid only [money ammount] due to some rebates and coupons...

4-0 out of 5 stars Straight forward creation of DVD and SVCD disks
I'm two days into the thirty day free trial.

The download and install went smooth as silk. I got an immediate connection to my Canon Optura PI thru a previous Firewire board and imported my video.

I created an SVCD on my first try, burned it to CD-R and played it in my Apex 1500 ...DVD player. The quality was great! Far superior to VCD which has low resolution and all kinds of blocky compression artifacts. The SVCD was DVD quality. I created an XSVCD using MPEG2-High Quality files I created using DVD Factory, but I couldn't tell any difference from the SVCD output. ...P>Why not four stars? The program is really an amalgam of two programs, the Video Toolbox for capturing and trimming the video, and the DVD Factory for authoring menus and creating the disks. Once you go forward from editing to export, you can't go back without exiting and restarting the program. And while the Video Toolbox does remember what files you have on the timeline, you can't save the project by name and open a new one.

I needed help to understand how to set cut-in and cut-out points and to trim the video. Also there is a right-click menu to allow you to "join" separate "scenes" but it is not in the online manual and I couldn't figure it out. I have just created a 35 minute, 690 megabyte SVCD which will not play the final MPEG file. Is this a bug in DVD Factory? A problem with my player? Or a limitation of the SVCD format to a standard 650MB CD? Inquiring minds want to know.

There is no editing available beyond trimming and reordering your imported video clips, and no titleing. It would be useful to be able to create very simple titles to identify clips in an assemble edit, but for that, you will have to step up to a real editing program.

Download it and give it a try. ...SVCD is video for the masses, at least until DVD-R media and drives are the same price as CD-R.

Recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, but very limited.
If you are just getting into the often frustrating world of hobby video, this program will help you get started. However, you won't learn much in the process. Basically, you run a wizard, and a few hours later you've got a (S)VCD/DVD. The menu is somewhat customizable--you can add your own backgrounds and music--but leaves a lot to be desired.

The biggest problem I have with Movie Factory is it's built in encoder. It just takes way too long and the quality isn't always that great. There is also a problem with audio becoming async when converting DivX/XVid to MPEG2 with Movie Factory; just test burn to a DVD-RW first, so you won't end up with a bunch of expensive coasters. To be fair, this can be a problem with many other authoring programs, and is a pain to fix.

Personally, I prefer DVD-Lab, though it costs more and is a tad harder to use. For $80 you get an authoring program that is fairly easy to use, yet is capable of producing professional quality DVDs, complete with fully customizable menus. Similar programs can cost hundreds, even thousands of dollars and won't be nearly as easy to use.

It also lacks an encoder, so you would probably want to look into TMPEGnc Plus (another $30.00) or Flask MPEG (Free). Actually, it's not a bad idea to use TMPEGnc instead of Movie Factory's encoder. Both DVD-Lab and TMPEG have 30 day demos available.

Regardless of which authoring program and encoder you go with, you'll definitely want to download a copy of Virtual Dub. This is probably the most useful piece of software you will ever use for video editing. It's also free. You'll also want to bookmark dvdrhelp.com; if you can't find a solution to your problem there, it probably can't be solved.

4-0 out of 5 stars A little fussy, but otherwise quite nice
I'll concur with some of the bad reviews; Ulead's customer support is snotty at their very best, and that's after sitting on hold for a half hour. However, I'm rejecting some of the bad reviews largely because the posters don't seem to know what to do with the software. DVD MovieFactory is ideal *if* you capture the video somewhere else. If you have a digital capture card, use the application that came with it to do the capturing (I use Creative's DigitalVCR). MovieFactory will only import files that adhere to DVD standards, so you'll probably need to convert the file to a 720x480 Mpeg-2. Adobe Premiere 6.5's MainConcept plugin can do that. However, once all that is said and done, MovieFactory works very smoothly. You can set chapter points effortlessly, create detailed sub menus for chapters, and even have accompanying music to each and every menu. Definately try it out before purchasing it, but if you give it what it wants, I think you'll be happy. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Animated GIFs are the best way to catch someone's eye on the Web without slowing your page down to a crawl. Ulead's GIF Animator is a great tool to create these attention-grabbing designs.

While you can make an animated GIF using almost any graphics program, the features you need are often hidden away in a full image editing package. Because GIF Animator is designed just for working with animations, the tools are easy to find and use. The interface is easy to work, as it provides a filmstrip view of all the frames in your animation. You'll also see a list of all the objects across all the frames, so you can work across multiple frames, overlaying one object on another. From the main window, you can edit the images, produce intermediate frames automatically by tweening from one image to another, optimize the color palette to make the file smaller, and preview the final animation.

A simple set of editing tools lets you paint, erase, and add text. Excellent integration with programs like PhotoImpact, Photoshop, and Paint Shop Pro means you can work with layers in an image as objects inside GIF Animator, or update your images in another package and automatically see the changes in GIF Animator. There's a set of special effects and transitions, but you can also use Photoshop plug-ins and filters. You can work with video files as well as still images, and import and export a range of formats including Flash.

This is the latest version of a classic utility that's packed with features but still easy to use. If you need images that move, make them in GIF Animator. --Mary Branscombe ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good! but must buy Add-in for transition and filter effects
I am not a pro at all. I just wanted to play around a build my own animated emoticons/smileys.
This product is good, but if you want transition and filering effects (i.e. effects on your animations, instead of just a looping sequence of pictures) you have to buy an Add-in software called "F/X for GIF Animator" by the same firm Unlead.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!
This program is outstanding! I've been using it since I was probably 11... so you know it's pretty easy to use. It's easy but it has a great outcome... I make AIM buddy icons with it and they are really awesome. My friends BEG me to make them icons... all thanks to GIF Animator! Buy it now!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great product
Very intuitive product. I got what I needed to get done
quickly. Minimal learning curve, very enjoyable to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's better than ever
I got GIF Animator 5 as an upgrade to version 4. Wow, what an improvement, Ulead! I love the fact that you can animate objects within the program and not have to toggle back and forth with my image editor. Plus, the way it links with my image editor is awesome. Thanks, Ulead, for adding true color palettes so I can get my files down to very managable sizes. I am going to put aside Image Ready for now and have a hey day with this one.

2-0 out of 5 stars NEVER MIND the file size....
Over and over again I tried to slice the file size of finished animation - to no avail.
Yes - if you only used a postage stamp size image you might get by with being able to use it on your website with a halfway decent loading time.
We tried to use the gif animator in our gallery on several occasions - guranted, with high quality images of max filesize 12kb each (can't go any lower if anyone is to see any quality at all) and the finished, so called improved file size still was larger than any website page can carry - unless you want to wait for the 30-45 seconds for that single instance to load - no one does, not even at the best websites. So, we have another 'wonderful' program dusting away on our shelves. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars PowerDVD - Great
I downloaded alot of shareware programs looking for decent video screencapture. Nothing worked and it was a waste of time.
The basic version of PowerDVD came as the media player on my new computer so I looked into the full version. Should have done that first- the screencaptures I make now are crystal clear and the program is so easy to use, simple set up. The hardest part is deciding which captures to take. If you collect scenes from movies, as I do, this is definately worth looking into.

4-0 out of 5 stars Expensive...but good
Downloaded other software....big mistake. Trial the software and you'll appreciate it. Good value...so far

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
This came with my DVD drive and it is pretty cool. I had to get on-line to actually figure it out how to operate all of the buttons and I'm still learning the features but this is a great buy to view DVDs.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good product but paying for a download is a waste
I purchased the downloadable version of this product. It works excellently, exactly as advertised. The only problem is this: If I purchase something as a download I most likely am looking for instant gratification. In this case it took over 24 hours before I received the link location. I could have easily driven down to Best Buy to purchase it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Superior feature set, hobbled by poor software quality.
I'm a complete DVD-holic. So much so that I have tried just about every computer DVD solution out there, in the search for the Holy Grail of DVD Viewing. I currently run no less than 3 DVD viewing solutions on my machines: WinDVD 3, PowerDVD 4, and a Hollywood Plus (hardware-based). Despite the hype surrounding PowerDVD, and the impressive features touted for this latest version, it still has a way to go. Version 4.0 is easily the buggiest version of any DVD viewer I've ever tried (with the possible exception of some of the early H+ versions), and that is largely the reason why I have yet to get rid of my older solutions in favor of it. Here are just a few of its still-current problems that I've run into on my machine (P3-800, 512MB RAM, GeForce 2), off the top of my head:

- At random and for no apparent reason, will become extremely sluggish in responding to commands (e.g. a minute to respond to a single click). Closing and restarting it solves the problem.
- Loses sync between video/audio frequently, especially with frequent rewinds or FF's.
- On WinXP, it can't rewind faster than 1X or fast-forward higher than 2X, or it will stop responding. The rewinds/FFs are not at those actual speeds, either. Win9x also shows this problem, except that the user can regain control of the software eventually (though very slowly). This is probably the most annoying bug.
- Has some problems playing DVDs that other players handle fine (e.g. Tron Collector's Edition).
- With some titles, does not remember its previous "bookmark" when loading the DVD next time.
- Often causes problems with DirectX-using programs (e.g. games) being used concurrently or in the same boot-up session, sometimes serious enough to crash the machine.

So what's the bottom line? Feature-wise, this product has the potential to rule the market...it's unsurpassed in that aspect. However, that doesn't mean a whole lot if the software is buggy, and it is, very much so (at least still as of this writing). Buy if you like, but count on a good chunk of disappointment with it until Cyberlink patches it up (which they are generally slow to do). Until then, WinDVD 3 is a far more stable and solid choice, but comparatively lacking slightly in features. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Cool

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing !
The product is awesome, great video and audio quality; of course, compare to other products, I think PowerDVD is the only one choose I will buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars All Around Great DVD player
The product does exactly what it claims, and does it well: It plays DVDs. While the program is not absolutely perfect, it well deserves, the 5 stars rating I gave it.

Strong points:
The program is convenient. It supports Autoplay, meaning it can start up and play a DVD automatically as soon as you insert it into the drive. It also allows you to load up VOB files (DVDs that were extracted onto your harddrive) which few other DVD players I've encountered allowed you to do. CyberLink PowerDVD also allows you to emulate surround sound from a 2 speaker configuration, and the results were surprisingly good.

Weak point:
My only complaint with the program is that when you adjust the volume in the DVD player, it merely adjusts your entire system's volume, meaning making the DVD louder also makes any other sound coming from your computer louder. This results in, for example, very loud ICQ beeps if you get ICQed while watching a DVD. They should have normalized the sound in software, similar to how mp3 players adjust the gain in sounds in their equalizer features.

Conclusion:
Except for that one weakness, which I hope will be fixed in future releases, this is an excellent program for watching DVDs on your computer. ... Read more
