Borland's C++ 5.0 Programming Starter Kit is a virtual compendium of Cand C++ resources. The package is designed for anyone with between no C orC++ knowledge to an advanced-basic to intermediate level of programmingunderstanding. Better yet, each component ties in with the others, making this avery useful package for getting a full education in the wonders of C++ in a step-by-step fashion.

In your first step, tackle the hard-copy book Sams Teach Yourself C in 24Hours, 2nd Edition, by Tony Zhang. By completing each one-hour lesson, andthen subsequently performing the task using the C compiler CD, you'll be off toa great start toward C proficiency. The topics begin with "What is C?" and gothrough a variety of functions, characters, constants, variables, and more. You'll also learn to troubleshoot and debug your programs, discover pointers andarrays, and declare functions. Zhang wraps it all up with compiling your code, the nuts and bolts process of making your program a program. You'll also havethe e-book C Primer Plus, by Stephen Prata, available to consult, whichworks as a great reference to complement your study of C.

Next you can turn your attention to the two other e-books that are included: theconversational The Complete Idiot's Guide to C++ Sourcecode, by PaulSnaith, and reference-style C++ How To. The Idiot's Guide providesa lot of direction in the way of examples, but you'll find a scant amount ofactual exercises for the student. You'll find that in C++ How To, whichis arranged to support the learning that you've already done with 24Hours, in that it's logically organized into topics: language topics, datastructures, algorithms, memory management, and input/output. Each chapter beginswith a list of "How do I ..." questions that allow for easy access.

But this package isn't truly about the documentation: it's about actuallyworking with the languages. Borland provides you with a C++ compiler (which, asall C++ compilers do, works to compile both C++ and C programs). What this meansfor you is that you can see the programs that you generate throughout your questfor C++ knowledge come to fruition in the DOS environment.

And once you're ready to develop the hard-hitting questions and think about theissues surrounding the use of C and C++ in the real world, you can use thesecond disc's collection from Dr. Dobb's Journal, which spans from January 1988 to June 2000. This searchable resource allows you to referencearticles from these issues, plus the Dr. Dobb's Sourcebook Series andpreviously unpublished source code, and also lets you copy code into yourprojects. --Emilie Dirks ... Visual C++ .NET is the most flexible of Microsoft's languages. The compiler primarily targets native-code Windows executables, but a switch also enables compilation to MSIL (Microsoft intermediate language). This managed code runs on the .NET Framework's common language runtime, with full access to the Framework's class library.

Developers can include both managed and unmanaged code in the same project: the compiler does the necessary internal translation automatically. This feature is particularly valuable for those with existing applications that cannot be ported all at once to the .NET platform.

The Visual C++ .NET product consists of an IDE, class libraries, compiler, and tools. The compiler in the Standard edition is nonoptimizing, so professional developers may prefer Visual Studio .NET Professional or higher. The key libraries are the MFC (Microsoft Foundation Classes), which wrap the Windows API, and the ATL (Active Template Library), for efficient development of COM or ActiveX components. In addition, the bundled .NET Framework SDK has command-line compilers for Visual Basic, JScript, and Visual C#, and you can also compile C# from the IDE. Despite its managed extensions, Visual C++ .NET does not support the Windows Forms designer or the Web Forms designer, although there is a visual dialog editor for native Windows applications.

The two big changes in Visual C++ .NET, when compared to Visual C++ 6.0, are support for the .NET Framework and a brand-new IDE. There are minor updates to MFC and ATL, and the ability to do COM programming using attributes is a strong feature. The Standard C++ Library is updated in this version, with improved standards compliance for those building portable applications, although Visual C++ .NET is still not the best in this respect. On the other hand, it excels as a tool for building Windows applications and components, where its huge flexibility compensates for the lack of a visual form designer.

The Visual C++ IDE is outstanding, although you need to double the minimum system requirements for good performance, and note that it does not run on Windows 98 or Me. Online help is now fully integrated into the main workspace, wizards have been streamlined, and the XML designer will be useful even to those not working with the .NET Framework. --Tim Anderson, Amazon.co.uk ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great IDE - watch out for Standard version though
I've been using Visual Studio .NET (the full package) for a while at work, and it's been working very well. The debugger is great, the IDE is much nicer than any other I've used, and IntelliSense is very handy to have.

If you're considering buying this 'Standard version', take note of the difference between it and the version that comes with 'Professional' Visual Studio package:

VC++.NET Standard does NOT come with an optimising compiler. This is the *learning edition* - you're permitted to distribute apps you write with it, but you can't use the /Ox compiler switches to generate optimised code.

Note that you may be still able to compile (and optimise) the code you've written in the VC++.NET IDE with the free Borland C++ compiler or with GCC, as long as you're not using MFC or ATL.

5-0 out of 5 stars Answer to the Question?
Visual C++ .Net is a Upgrade of sorts to Visual C++ 6 it has added features and the .net framework If you plan to go with a book that is made for visual c++ 6 i would go with visual c++ 6 because the book is
product specific. Iwould suggest ditching the book Grabbing Visual C +++.net and getting C++ Primer a book that will teach you to program c++ and not just to use Microsoft version 6 of the IDE.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great if you just want to tinker.
Note after spending a good bit of time with this software, I felt compelled to rewrite my review.

I use Visual Studio as an editor when I write code for Linux/Unix, and also to develop native XP/2000 device drivers and windows application code.

This version is basically an upgrade of Visual C++ 6, with .NET, managed classes, and better template and ANSI standards adherence. Any problems you had with STL are resolved with this version. Note, on some code you will get some errors on code that compiled without warning under VC6, due to a stricter compiler.

Unfortunately, there are some negatives. The biggest is a rewrite of the Visual Studio IDE. The Visual Studio C++ class wizard is gone. Yes. Gone. You will have to spend time (and a large amount of it) to relearn how to add events, message handlers, and otherwise get up to speed with the VB-ish property window.

What would take me five minutes (drag and drop of an ActiveX control) ended up taking several hours of sifting through the help files.

This version is basically the academic version, with some crippled functionality. This version will not allow you to generate optimized code (/Ox switches are disabled), and some other functionality has been removed.

Also, you will want to have at least 512 MB, or it will crawl. I keep reverting back to Visual Studio C++ because of the .NET's lethargy. Luckily, unlike previous versions of Visual C++, the two versions can coexist on your system peacefully.

Further, if you intend to do any .NET development, you may be somewhat disappointed as .NET support is primarily focused on C# and VB. There are no examples for C++ using .NET assemblies, etc.

Hello. I was planning to buy Visual C++ 6 a while back but then Microsoft came out with Visual C++.NET. I bought the book Visual C++ 6 for Dummies and that is when Microsoft switched. I was hoping that someone who has Vusyal C++.NET or someone who is knowledgable about this subject could help me out. Is Visual C++.NET just an upgraded verison of C++ 6? Would C++ 6 for Dummies still work with C++.NET? I do not know where else I could get an anwser for this. If anyone knows where I could ask my question, that would be great too. Amazon.com Review

Visual Studio .NET is a superb, next-generation development tool. At its heart is the .NET Framework, a runtime engine and class library that enables rapid application building for both Windows and Web applications. The runtime engine handles housekeeping, like memory management, while also providing fine-grained security and version awareness. The class library reduces the code needed to build rich applications. Visual Studio also provides a slick visual environment, with features like tabbed and docking windows, dynamic online help, and automatic code completion and hints.

Visual Studio .NET's common runtime is language-neutral so, for example, Visual Basic programmers can use components written in C# and vice versa. Other languages, such as COBOL and FORTRAN, can plug into Visual Studio, and Microsoft provides a version of the Java language called J#. These two languages, along with J#, have full support for the visual design tools in Visual Studio .NET. Also included is JScript .NET, Microsoft's version of JavaScript, although this comes without a form designer. Visual C++ is more similar to earlier versions, and is the only compiler included that can build old-style Windows executables. With a compiler switch, it can also target .NET, making it particularly flexible.

The Enterprise Architect edition has source-code management with Visual SourceSafe, performance testing, and analysis tools. It also includes developer versions of many of Microsoft's server products, including SQL Server, Commerce Server, Exchange Server, and the Windows 2000 Advanced Server operating system. These are licensed for development only, but even so, it is a rich range of products. Finally, there is the ability to use enterprise templates. New in Visual Studio .NET, these are sophisticated skeleton projects that assist organizations in maintaining consistent best practices, and this edition, Enterprise Architect, can create them from scratch.

Another benefit of Enterprise Architect is the inclusion of Visio, an advanced drawing package that has the ability to model databases or even complete applications. This includes code generation and reasonable support for UML, which is the de facto industry standard. Finally, Enterprise Architect includes BizTalk Server, which is able to manage business processes and integrate applications between trading partners.

Overall, Visual Studio .NET is a radical break from the past for Microsoft. C# is an entirely new language, aimed at C and C++ programmers looking for something safer and more productive. Visual Basic .NET is a new twist on the old Microsoft favorite, losing compatibility with earlier versions, but gaining full object orientation as well as access to all the .NET libraries.

There are a few points against Visual Studio .NET. One is that, like earlier versions, it only creates applications that run on Windows. Web applications are a partial exception, in that they support cross-platform clients, but deployment requires a Windows Web server. Another factor is, with its multiple compilers and mountains of documentation, Visual Studio .NET eats up gigabytes of disk space, and the IDE tends to be slow with less than around 384 MB RAM. Serious developers will take this in stride, but casual users could have difficulty. Fortunately, the applications created have more modest system requirements, although Windows 95 is not supported. Finally, developers coming from earlier editions face a lot of learning, with radical changes in both Visual Basic and ASP.

Despite these minor issues and a steep learning curve, Visual Studio .NET is an extremely versatile, sophisticated, and capable development tool. --Tim Anderson, Amazon.co.uk ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Though this product's name tends to indicate that it's purely a database tool, NuSphere MySQL is really a suite of four open-source software packages--proven, popular, and well-supported ones--that work together to run interactive, dynamic Internet sites. This package is comprised of the MySQL relational database management system (RDBMS), interpreters for the Perl and PHP languages, and the Apache Web server. It's far from just a straight CD-ROM distribution of publicly available software, though. NuSphere has done a great job of automating the packages' installation processes--this suite installs on both Windows and Linux--so the four utilities interoperate smoothly. You can also install any or all of the suite's components manually, or compile from the included source code.

The big boys of databases--Oracle, Sybase, Microsoft, and others--would like you to believe that only their big, expensive RDBMS products are good enough to handle your data. It's just not true. Most of the time you'll find that MySQL, an open-source RDBMS that's widely used and meticulously maintained, is entirely adequate for storing, retrieving, and reporting on your pieces of data. It supports standard structured query language (SQL, as defined in the SQL-92 specification), and should be familiar to anyone who's done SQL work in any environment before. MySQL has been tested extensively and has been found to stack up well against commercial database products, particularly with small- to mid-size data stores and moderate transaction loads. The point: unless you have unusually tough requirements (such as an astronomical transaction load, a need to store epic quantities of data, or a need for a feature that's available only in commercial RDBMSes), MySQL can do what you want reliably and speedily. It's a well-built RDBMS that does everything most applications require. Its appeal is enhanced by the programming languages and tools that have grown up around it. This kit includes version 3.23.41.

PHP (the letters come from the German for "Hypertext Preprocessor") is similar in function to Microsoft's Active Server Pages (ASP) and Sun's JavaServer Pages (JSP) scripting languages. PHP code is embedded in documents that are to be sent out by a Web server, and is interpreted before the page is served. That means you can use PHP (version 4.0.6 is part of the NuSphere product) to do database lookups (the language has a set of commands specifically for connecting to MySQL databases). PHP can format the results of the lookups as HTML, which the Web server would then send to the requesting browser. You can set up HTML forms to be submitted to PHP scripts, as well, which means you can use HTML, PHP, and MySQL together to create complete user interfaces for your databases.

If you prefer using Perl (Practical Extraction and Report Language) to PHP or require its more extensive text-manipulation capabilities, this kit provides you with Perl 5.6.1. Like PHP, Perl has modules (included here) that make it easy to query MySQL databases and use the results in your applications. Perl, like PHP, can be used to generate Web pages based on query results. Perl has a gigantic following, and as a result you'll find hundreds of books, mailing lists, chat rooms, sample-code libraries, and experts on it. It's a pretty consistent and easy-to-understand language, too, so learning is relatively easy.

Tying it all together: Apache, the popular, refined, and extensible open-source Web server. Apache (version 1.3.20 included here) serves HTML pages, of course, but also makes Perl and PHP scripts available to users on the network. It's reliable and customizable.

There's documentation, too. Three commercially available books (all from O'Reilly & Associates, and with plenty of detail) ship as part of this package:

  • PHP Pocket Reference
  • Apache Pocket Reference
  • Perl 5 Pocket Reference, Third Edition: Programming Tools

Partly because the four software packages in this kit are so great, and partly because NuSphere's installation routine solves so many configuration hassles, NuSphere MySQL represents a great value. Don't hesitate to buy it if you need to bring up a Web server in a hurry. --David Wall ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! Super easy.
I love NuSphere. NuSphere MySQL was a snap to install. I was able to host a web page pretty much right at the start (after I got used to the directory structure and some of the features).

This was perfect for a beginner like me. Perl, apache, php and mysql work right from the start. This setup is perfect for learning Web Development and administration. I've wanted to learn Apache and php for a while, and NuSphere definitely kicks you right into it. The nice thing is you don't even need to be connected to the net to start learning. This package comes with pocket reference guides to Perl, apache, and php. Plus the big book on MySQL.

A good knowledge of Linux/Unix and command lines well is needed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worthy
Save your money. Not even as good as freeware.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hard to configure
I tried this software and couldn't create a simple database with out reading a lot and wasn't easy to configure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Web development platform and database
Lots of good stuff in this box. Good documentation. THe headliner is the NuSphere database: it is just like MySQL except it has real row-locking so it isn't SLO when multiple users are beating on it, and it has auto-crash recovery, so my beeper doesn't go off.

Install is sweet, and works remotely for headless installs. Full webserver middleware stack (Apache, nusphere MySQL, Perl and PHP) installs on Linux and windoze, even on virgen systems. If you've ever tried to get bugzilla up under windoze, you'll like this: it comes with a multi-platform bugzilla for free.

Some dba tools in the bundle, some apache stuff, but I haven't tried it. For me, its the database stupid.

Nice support but telephone is extra, you have to use email.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product, great price
I purchased NuSphere MySQL directly from NuSphere after reading reviews on the internet. I first used it on Windows and was very happy. It installs very quickly with just one or two clicks, and I had a web server, database, and development environment all running. Much better than Microsoft PWS with FrontPage, and much faster.

I recently switched to Linux for my website development, and was happy to see that it worked just as well. All the same tools, fast one-click install, although the user interface was easier under Windows.

Very good organization of the files, too, making for easy backups.

Last month I purchased NuSphere PHPed, and it works very well with the NuSphere MySQL, but is more for professional developers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't pay for this
You can get the JBuilder 6 Personal for free when you get the book Learn Java with JBuilder6 by Zukowski from amazon for less than fourty bucks, or you can download it free from Borland's website.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good IDE, but not much use for serious development
I've used jBuilder3 for many years (and JB2 before that), so I'm familiar with Borland's Java products. I do single-station development, and decided it was time for a more stable IDE (JB3 crashes a couple times per day on large projects) and I also wanted to use JDK 1.3.1 so I got JBuilder6.

Well...Borland seems to want to make a much more agressive split between hobbyist and professional. Some of the more useful features I have gotten used to in JB3 are reserverd for Professional or Enterprise. I was extremely surprised to find that I can't even deploy applications or applets through JB6!! (you have to do it manually via Sun's jar tool at the DOS command line, which is a real pain) Also, some of the layouts that I have used for small parts of applications (e.g. XYLayout) have likewise been removed to Prof or Ent. This means a lot of retro-coding on my part. As I have just started using it, I'm not sure what else I'll run into, but I'm concerned.

So...is it a good IDE feature-wise? Yes, and I've used others such as IBM's Visual Java. The code-insight is useful, the ability to use different JDKs works nicely, and there are other nice touches that any IDE should have. I would just make sure that you check the feature matrix on Borland's website VERY CAREFULLY to make sure the features you expect to be present are actually there.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Java IDE (for now)
I don't know if I'd buy this from Amazon, Borland usually makes the Personal edition free after a while. I've been using JBuilder since 4.0 and though it's not perfect it is currently the best Java IDE around.
On Windows and Linux it's been very stable. If there are problems with stability (as the previous user indicates) I would suspect the OS X JDK. I'm not a really big fan of thier new installation hoops either.
The modal screens problem does suck but after programming some Java GUI I can see why it's this way and I'm sure Borland will fix it when the JDK allows them to.
Why do I like it?
it compiles FAST
the debugger very nice
the "find definition" feature is super nice
when I want the ide to be able to do something there's usually iether a way to do it or an add-on from a third party that does it (mobileset from borland, mousewheel support on the second CD in the box).

Why don't I like it?
the editor should be able to fold, and I'd really like to see macro support (it doesn't seem like they've done much with the editor since JB4).
Installation can be a pain (esp. on Linux), the new license stuff does seem really invasive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top notch Java Development
Borland JBuilder 6 is a solid development tool. While the Personal edition is just a base level tool, it gives you a chance to test drive JBuilder and upgrade to the Pro or Enterprise version. I've run it on Linux and Windows 2000 without any hitches. I've not heard of any problems with the Mac OSX, except for the other reviewer here. I do know that supporting OSX was a personal vision of JBuilder's chief architect, so if there are any problems, I'm sure they are being addressed. After all, JBuilder is written in 100% Java and Java code is Java code. If JBuilder runs fine on Solaris, Linux, Windoze, etc, it should run on Mac OSX as long as the JVM is good..

If you can do without the CD, download JBuilder personal for free (beer) on Borland's website.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of promise, little return
I bought the JBuilder 6 Personal version (Win,Linux and OSX) and installed it on a Mac running OS X (B & W 350, 704mb RAM). This is my first experience with a Borland product and it has been very bad.

I wish that I had never bought it.
GRIPE 1
You can't just install it from disk, even with the supplied security keys. You have to CONTACT Borland to get another encrypted key that you then have to use to finish the install.
I asked why I had to contact Borland to get yet another key and they told me that they wanted to make sure that I did not STEAL their product.

GRIPE 2
JBuilder (now that it is finally running), constantly crashes my machine and I know 2 other OS X users with new G 4's that are having the same problem. Borland is no help at all. Once they found out I was using a Mac I started getting the cold sholder.

GRIPE 3
Almost all of the builder screens are modal. This really causes a problem when you are trying to follow steps in the help section but need to use one of the wizard builders. Once you open the wizard, you can no longer access the help screens until you close the wizard.

GRIPE 4
While using the help screen I noticed that most everytime I clicked on the help screen the code that I had written on the "page" would revert back to the welcome code supplied with JBuilder. Once I clicked back on the page with my code on it, it would revert back to my code and the welcome code would vanish.
ALSO, the help window would revert back to the main help page, but when I clicked on the already open help page again, it would suddenly revert back to the help page I was on.

THIS RELEASE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED BETA AT BEST!!!!
THIS RELEASE SHOULD NOT BE USED IN A SERIOUS PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT UNTIL BORLAND GETS ITS ACT TOGETHER!!!! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

NuSphere MySQL Advantage is a suite of four open-source software packages--proven, popular, and well-supported ones--that work together to run interactive, dynamic Internet sites. Far from just a straight CD-ROM distribution of publicly available software, NuSphere has done a great job of automating the packages' installation processes (the suite installs under both Windows and Linux) so the four utilities interoperate smoothly. You can also install any or all of the suite's components manually, or compile from the included source code.

The "advantage" in this product's name refers to a subscription service that comes in addition to the CD-ROM. Every quarter for a year, NuSphere ships its registered users an update disk that contains the latest stable versions of the four packages, plus additional goodies of their choosing. You get technical support, too: Web and e-mail support for a year. A similar NuSphere product--NuSphere MySQL--consists of the same base CD-ROM, but without the update subscription and tech support.

The lesser product also lacks the enhancements that NuSphere has made to the generic MySQL distribution. Their improved product--it's called Enhanced MySQL--allows row-level locking and therefore greater transaction loads. The enhancements also make it easier to recover from crashes and to better protect your data from unwanted access. NuSphere's modifications to the core MySQL make it more suitable for big database jobs.

But is MySQL any good? Experience says it's excellent. The big boys of databases--Oracle, Sybase, Microsoft, and others--would like you to believe that only their big, expensive RDBMS products are good enough to handle your data. It's just not true. Most of the time, you'll find that MySQL--Enhanced MySQL, particularly--is entirely adequate for storing, retrieving, and reporting on your pieces of data. It supports standard Structured Query Language (SQL), and should be familiar to anyone who has done SQL work in any environment before. MySQL has been tested extensively, and has been found to stack up well against commercial database products, particularly with small- to mid-size data stores and moderate transaction loads. So, unless you have unusually tough requirements (such as an astronomical transaction load or a need for a feature that's available only in commercial RDBMSes), MySQL can do what you want reliably and speedily. It's a well-built RDBMS that does everything most applications require, enhanced by the programming languages and tools that have grown up around it. This kit includes version 3.23.41.

PHP is similar in function to Microsoft's Active Server Pages (ASP) and Sun's JavaServer Pages (JSP) scripting languages. PHP code is embedded in documents that are to be sent out by a Web server, and is interpreted before the page gets served. That means you can use PHP (version 4.0.6 is part of the NuSphere product) to do database lookups; the language has a set of commands specifically for connecting to MySQL databases. PHP can format the results of the lookups as HTML, which the Web server would then send to the requesting browser. You can set up HTML forms to be submitted to PHP scripts as well, which means you can use HTML, PHP, and MySQL together to create complete user interfaces for your databases.

If you prefer Perl to PHP or require its more extensive text-manipulation capabilities, this kit provides you with Perl 5.6.1. Like PHP, Perl has modules that make it easy to query MySQL databases and use the results in your applications. Perl, like PHP, can be used to generate Web pages based on query results.

What ties all this together is Apache, the popular, refined, and extensible open-source Web server. Apache (version 1.3.20 here) serves HTML pages, of course, but also makes Perl and PHP scripts available to users on the network. It's reliable and customizable.

There's documentation, too. Three commercially available books (all from O'Reilly & Associates, and with plenty of detail) ship as part of this package:

  • Apache Pocket Reference
  • Perl 5 Pocket Reference, Third Edition
  • MySQL/PHP Database Applications

Partly because the four software packages in this kit are so great, and partly because NuSphere's installation routine solves so many configuration hassles, NuSphere MySQL Advantage is a great value. Don't hesitate to buy it if you need to bring up a Web server in a hurry, require some help with the process, and plan to maintain it over time.

Last month I purchased NuSphere PHPed, and it works very well with the NuSphere MySQL, but is more for professional developers. ... Read more
