5-0 out of 5 stars Best RAD tool on the market
I've always been keen on doing Windows programming rather than just stick with console programming using C++. MS Visual Basic 6.0 did allow me to do just that, but somehow it never got me going, especially with more complex functions.

Then, I heard of very good reviews of Delphi and started to get myself familiar with it. What an awesome programming language! Although Delphi 5 isn't the most popular RAD tool, but its definitely the best! The Professional version provides enough functionality to build good applications using components directly out of the box. The beauty of this IDE is also the fact that there are many, many more components which can be 'plugged' into your projects, and some without having to do much or any coding/recoding, which is just great. Some even come with source codes, so that you might build upon rather than rebuild from scratch. Reusable and open source code is one of Delphi's strong points.

No matter what version you might have, you could probably find some components off the web which are either freeware or shareware and is just as, or even better than some components which came with the package. All I can say is that Borland created a really awesome tool that's very easy to get used to. What about the bad points? As I'm not a professional, but rather a casual programmer, I found that compile, debugging times were just aweful compared to MS VB6. Same goes with JBuilder, just to mention it. The Run-time wasn't that great either, but who's to complain when you can drastically cut down on development time. Documentation was alright, and to tell you the truth, more books should be written about it. Goes to show that Delphi isn't mainstream compared to C++ or VB.

No one should spend lots of time doing basic coding of basic features of a program unless they have to, ESPECIALLY when it takes hundreds of lines to code in C++. If you want to be involved in RAD, the Borland's Delphi 5 is your best bet, guaranteed! You get the power of C, but the ease of VB. No point 'reinventing the wheel' like they all say. However, if you feel that C++ is your strength, go get Borland's C++ Builder which sticks with the concept of visual design just like Delphi. I'm was not a Borland fan in the beginning, but now I'm giving my full support for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best Windows development system
I've been programing Windows professionally since 3.1, using C, C++, Visual Basic, and even some Fortran. There is no question that Delphi is the best Windows development enironment currently available. It combines the speed of C++ with the flexibility of VB, while avoiding the complexity of C++ and the sloppy annoyances of VB. And it's easy to learn - not as easy as VB, but _way_ easier than C/C++. Plus Borland will soon release Kylix, the Linux version of Delphi, and for the first time it will be relatively easy to port Windows apps to Linux - if the app was developed with Delphi.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best IDE for Windows
Delphi has to be the best IDE for Windows, and certainly the best thing going for Pascal coding.

Borland Delphi 5 is amazingly responsive, and works well on average hardware, compiles quickly, and has many features.

A person can do in 100 lines of Delphi the same thing that takes 1000's lines in C++. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

The surest way to annoy a programmer is to state unequivocallythat one integrated development environment (IDE) or another is thebest of its kind. The fact is, they're all good in their respectiveways; the issue boils down to one of personal preferences andexperience rather than with characteristics of the IDEs themselves.

Borland C++Builder 5 Enterprise is a top-shelf IDE designed fordeveloping Windows applications, services, libraries, and othersoftware in ANSI C and C++. Its user interface is attractive, itsobject model is intelligent, and its feature set stacks up well againstall its competitors. It's a fine choice for Windows development work, particularly for projects that involve n-tier database connectivity, distributed applications, internationalization, Internet connectivity,or a combination of these.

This latest version of C++Builder incorporates improvements to itssupport of database connectivity, Internet applications, and ExtensibleMarkup Language (XML). The editor now features better to-do listmanagement and a variety of little interface improvements, includingprogrammable key mappings. There's support for multithreaded backgroundcompilation now. The Enterprise edition also, for the first time, includes support for team-based development work. You'll findversioning, code check-in and checkout, and integration with project- tracking suites like PVCS. Complaints in the developer community seemto center on Borland's compiler yielding executables that are slightlyless speedy (perhaps 5 or 10 percent slower) than the competingcompiler in Microsoft Visual C++ 6. In absolute terms, the speeddifference will hardly be noticeable in most applications. It'sprobably a worthwhile sacrifice if you prefer the Borland interface andtool set.

One of the most attractive features of the Enterprise edition is itsdatabase connectivity. This product comes with native drivers forOracle (including Oracle 8i), Sybase, Informix, Microsoft SQL Server(including SQL Server 7), IBM DB2, and InterBase databases, all ofwhich may be distributed as widely as you like under the C++Builderlicense without further royalty payments. The Enterprise edition alsoships with several specialized SQL development tools and extensivesupport for the development of multitier database applications. Forspeeding creation of such systems, this product comes with the MIDASDevelopment Kit, which includes support for database connectivity overlow-speed connections, client-side query formulation and datavalidation, and server-management operations.

The Enterprise package includes support for the Common Object RequestBrokerage Architecture (CORBA). It has facilities for generating theinterface stubs you need to share objects across processes, machines, and languages, and is a great way to integrate your Java componentswith the C++ code you write in C++Builder. You'll also want Enterprisefor internationalized projects. Its internationalization features arebetter than those of other versions of C++Builder and include supportfor simultaneous development and translation.

Borland C++Builder comes with a Companion Tools CD-ROM that contains aselection of third-party products that complement the IDE. Withcontents that include some nice interface objects and some developmentutilities (some fully functional, some meant to make you aware ofcommercial offerings), the CD-ROM is well worth perusal. This productalso ships with copies of Borland JBuilder 3 for Java development,Borland Delphi 4 for rapid creation of relatively simple Windowsapplications, and HoTMetaL Pro 5 for HTML and script development.

Overall, Borland C++Builder 5 Enterprise is one of the best C++ IDEsfor bigtime Microsoft Windows programming work. With its intelligentinterface and time-saving design rules, it's likely to reduce yourdevelopment time and give you more freedom to explore its advancedfeatures. --David Wall ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Its the IDE
As a Software Engineer, I got in touch with the IBM Visual Age series three years ago - IBM Visual Age for Smalltalk. SmallTalk was used (and is still in use) especially for server-client applications in the finance sector due to its strong object-oriented capabilities and its outstanding version management system.
However, IBM followed the SmallTalk IDE concept and made it even better: IBM Visual Age for Java.
Since I don't want to discuss Java features in this context, I focus on the IDE itself. I also will ignore the visual programming features - simply because it is rarely used in the industry. What is to say about such a complex application like this Integrated Development Environment?

1) Repository concept: The source code is structured into packages and classes/interfaces. Also the class itself is structured by its members, the fields and methods. The smallest unit stored in the version database is the method. Want to restore just the method getBestIDE() { return "IBM VA JAVA"; } from for 2 weeks ago? No problem, open the class in a dedicated class browser, double-click on the method, select the version tab and select it by last modification date. Any questions? Compare with JBuilder / file based version management systems.

2) All time consistency: Since the method of a class is the smallest unit of structured statements, it is compiled by the compiler immediately when you finish the edit and therefore kept consistent. If you insist of saving an obviously faulty method (syntax AND partly semantics), VA for Java tags the method and the class with a small icon as an error within the class hierarchy browser. Needless to say that you cannot execute it.

3) Industries best debugger: Set breakpoints wherever you want. Need conditions regarding the execution of a breakpoint? Simply add a Java Boolean condition statement: i.e. if you look for the 876th iteration of a loop with the index 'i', you will formulate "i == 876" in a dedicated field in the breakpoint-dialog, and the IBM debugger will pop up exactly when the index equals the given value. Already in debug-mode, you can evaluate each member and each parameter of the operation. Need to change source code while debugging WITHOUT re-compiling an restarting the whole project (and losing the object/application state)? No problem, make your source code changes in the debugger window and save them. The debugger jumps to the beginning of the method. Be careful, when you already executed a statement that has changed the state of the object and jump to the start of the method, you might encounter strange behavior. However, you can also assign primitive values to members while debugging. Even object creation and field-assignment is possible, though its usefulness is questionable.

4) Intuitive user interface: After a learning phase (especially when you come from a file-base IDE), you will find the IDE intuitive to use and you will not miss it.

Are there any shortcomings? Maybe the "workbench" concept might be confusing for newcomers. The workbench is just the central window for VA for Java, but behind the scenes there is a database that holds the compiled code of all the classes you have 'imported' from java files. Some developers feel loosing a degree of freedom when they have to import java or jar files into the workbench. The bottom line is that the IDE is capable of restoring the source code database even after a system crash without data integrity issues.

One last note: The enterprise version provides essentialy J2EE programming features beside other important features. That version of VA also provides a multi-user version magement ready to use for development teams - while the professional version of IMB Visual Age for Java is a standalone IDE.
