1-0 out of 5 stars Steer clear of this one
I don't generally write reviews for products I dislike, but I really have major problems with VID. I tried using it for about six months, believe it or not, because I've been doing a lot of ASP programming and this product was supposed to be the cats meow. NOT!

It does do some things well as far as ASP goes, but it has a way of filling up each directory of your website with additional files, whether you want them or not. Perhaps I'm misusing the program. I bought three books on the subject, tried the newsgroups and just accepted that I'll use it for what I can use it for and no more. I tried to get help in the Newsgroups and I soon discovered that it's the blind leading the blind. I'm convinced most people do not know how to use this program well and perhaps not many are using it either because the newsgroups are almost empty. If you don't believe me, check it out.

I ended up downloading a trial version of HomeSite and I'm sticking with it. It's also significantly less expensive. A truly magnificient program which really allows you to code webpages very fast. I've had the evaluation copy for 10 days and I'm much more productive with it after 10 days than I ever was with VID after six months! HomeSite is intuitive - VID is not.

VID is very bloated as well. It takes a long time to load. It feels bloated like there is 10 tons of overhead that you don't need. I don't like what VID does with my websites creating directories and hidden directories and multiple copies of files hidden all over the place. Just try cleaning up the files on your server some day and see what this program does with each project you create. There is no mention of why this is done or whether it can even be controlled by the user. It just does what it wants whether you like it or not. This application is the epitome of complexity.

This is a very, very BAD program in my opinion. Save yourself some trouble by at least downloading the trial version of HomeSite and see if it does what you want. I wish I had done that six months ago and saved myself a lot of headaches.

And no, I am not in anyway affiliated with HomeSite!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great program for web designers!
InterDev is a wonderful product with many features. With this product you do have to know some coding. If you don't then it may be a little tough. This has three features for showing you the page: One shows you the page and you can move things around or do whatever, one is the source code, amd one is what the page would look like in an actual web browser. If you are a beginner then I wouldn't get this one yet.

Dreamweaver UltraDev is an enhanced version of Macromedia'sleading Web-authoring tool. The standout additional feature is dynamiccontent, which is when pages have live links to databases or othertypes of server-side scripting. Most products of this type requireextensive manual coding, but UltraDev has an extensive library ofbuilt-in scripts, called Server Behaviors, that allow even moderatelysophisticated sites to be built with little or no code. Version 4 lookssimilar to its predecessor, but includes important changes that make itmore complete and easier to use.

One of the best new features is the split code and design view, whichlets you edit either the code or the visual design and see changesinstantly echoed between them. There is also built-in security, so youcan create login procedures and password-protected sites. Finally, theLive Objects wizards automatically create page elements to handlecommon tasks, such as a master/detail page set, or forms to insert andupdate records.

UltraDev supports three kinds of server-side scripting: Active ServerPages, JavaServer Pages, and Cold Fusion. Unfortunately, it does notsupport PHP, which is popular on Linux and Unix servers, althoughbecause UltraDev is extensible, there may be some third-party add-ins.The features for the three models are similar but not identical, although in every case there is excellent database support. Its greatstrength is that you can focus on designing your pages and let UltraDevhandle the data access code. You can even display live data at designtime, making it easier to get exactly the right appearance.

Everything in Dreamweaver is also in UltraDev, so this is the idealpackage for Web authors who need to add dynamic content with a minimumof fuss. --Tim Anderson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply THE best web dev combination
DreamWeaver Rocks. Fireworks Rocks. Together they make for a spectacular web design/development combination.

Dreamweaver is packed with features for the beginner through advanced web developer; it's easy and intuitive to use. It may take you a while to learn all the capabilities, but with each successive feature you discover and master, the development process becomes easier and faster.

Fireworks is the best in class web graphics software. It integrates very well with DreamWeaver. Creating animated GIFs is a snap, as is image optimization (file compression), image map creation, and exploring full tables (HTML and all!) for use in DreamWeaver.

You simply cannot go wrong with this package. Photoshop still has its place, but if you focus exclusively on the web and don't need to do exquisite image editing this bundle is all you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome
I've been doing web development since 1996 and, to be honest, I fought tooth and nail against giving up Windows Notepad as my web development tool of choice. Microsoft FrontPage really ruined web development software for me and I pretty much vowed to avoid such applications in the future. Fortunately, my boss insisted that I use Dreamweaver and even sent me off to classes to learn the nuts and bolts. And now I'm hooked.

Dreamweaver is simply awesome and I can't imagine ever going back. Whether your a novice or professional, you'll come to love Dreamweaver's simple interface and ability to tackle otherwise tedious tasks -- such as Cascading Style Sheets, tables, layers -- with ease. Adding Flash, Shockwave or Java is as simple as it can possibly be. I took classes on Dreamweaver, but only because my boss insisted. The software is pretty easy to learn, though those with web development experience will have a fuller understanding (and respect) for the capabilities of the product.

The single most powerful part of Dreamweaver is the use of templates, which allow you to use the same look and feel across multiple pages and have all those pages updated when you make changes to the template. This alone will save you hours!

Another great thing about Dreamweaver is that creates clean HTML. This is something that any developer who has ever had to edit the HTML directly will respect -- especially if you've ever tried to make sense of FrontPage HTML nonsense.

Finally, the FTP application in Dreamweaver is outstanding. It keeps track of every page, graphic, link, etc. in your site and any change to any of them is cascaded through the entire site -- automatically updating links where necessary. With a simple click of a button your site is uploaded to your webserver.

There are so many features I haven't covered, but with the little I have this product is worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stupidly Discontinued!
Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4. They have turned this once great web design package into a hybrid cross of something that looks like Netscape/Flash and called it Dreamweaver MX 2004.

I used Dreamweaver MX 2004 for a month, uninstalled it and went back to Dreamweaver 4. It really is that terrible and the work space is terribly cluttered making it very hard to work within.

Bottom Line -- Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 instead if you can find it. Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 is a very good web design package that knocks Dreamweaver MX 2004 for ten. You will simply hate Dreamweaver MX 2004 when you install it on your system. I nearly barfed after a month of using that *new* completely hostile and non-user friendly piece of unstable and slow excuse for a web design software program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review for Dreamweaver 5
-This review is for Dreamweaver 5- I absolutely love this software. I had Adobe Go Live but I never seemed to take to it like I did with Dreamweaver. Once it was installed within a day, I had made several webpages. As I continued to use it I learned more and more intuitively without needing much guidance from the manual. As a user you can create your webpages visually or in code mode, this makes it a great option for anyone no matter what your skill - it can be adjusted to suit your needs. You can learn and develop your webpage skills as much or as little as you like. You do not need to be intimidated by it's high price. You can learn it and the cost is well worth the output. ...
I don't have to look for anything else, I have hit paydirt with this program! If you are using Front Page or any other visual interface for ease, you know that you are trapped into a forced format, get this program and you will understand the freedom of control without fear!

Amazon.com Review

Probably the best midrange database development system on the market, Microsoft Visual FoxPro 7.0 Professional Edition takes the ease-of-use and gentle learning curve that are characteristic of Microsoft Access and combines them with the scalability and feature-richness of Microsoft SQL Server 2000. The result is an eminently refined database development system, ideal for projects that aren't performance intensive.

FoxPro disproves the notion that database development and administration are black sciences, comprehensible only to specialists. This database suite demonstrates that you can do meaningful database work in an environment that can be figured out intuitively. The operative word is meaningful. FoxPro is not a friendly-but-feeble database management system you can use only to manage your recipes. Despite its friendly interface, it's a serious database tool.

The traditional way to use FoxPro is to develop a database on a server machine, then compile client applications--which rely on the freely distributable FoxPro runtime environment--to make queries against that server. That's still a good solution, but version 7.0 includes an object linking and embedding (OLE) database provider, with which you can expose FoxPro databases to non-FoxPro client applications. You can also increase your range of client compatibility by choosing to serve your data from Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Edition (MSDE), which ships with this product. Taking the MSDE path also makes future upgrades to the full version of SQL Server easier. It's straightforward to connect FoxPro databases with Internet Information Services (IIS) sites, which means FoxPro can serve as your Web site's back end. So, even though FoxPro isn't technically part of Microsoft's .NET architectural initiative, this new version is a lot more network-centric than any of its ancestors.

A lot of thought--and many years of customer feedback--have clearly gone into the design of this product. It's hard to imagine how the process of setting up a database could be made easier, since all you need to do is use simple menu commands to create a new project and populate it with databases, tables, queries, and the other elements of a useful application. To create a table, for example, you can choose to use a wizard that presents you with some typical tables--contacts, invoices, products, and so on--and the fields each kind of table typically contains. You can then choose to include in your table all or some of an example table's fields, supplement those fields with fields of your own making, and start collecting data.

The most immediately obvious new user-interface feature is IntelliSense, a longtime feature of other Microsoft products. IntelliSense will automatically complete function names and do syntactical grunt work for you as you type code. You can turn off IntelliSense, or modify its behavior, if you find it intrusive. Other interface changes include dockable windows and toolbars, and a couple of new ways to navigate around large code passages. There's also a new Object Browser tool you can use to examine and refer to the COM objects in your application's environment.

If you prefer to work with code and a command line, FoxPro has your number, as well. You can type commands and arguments that create databases, tables, relationships, views, reports, and queries, to say nothing of full-fledged business applications. The FoxPro language, like its graphical user interface, has been expanded and refined over the years. Microsoft has added more than 50 new commands, functions, and system variables to the language since its last release. Many of the more interesting ones--like XMLUPDATEGRAM() for sending database change notifications--have to do with importing and exporting data in Extensible Markup Language (XML). It's also now possible to monitor and react to events thrown by non-FoxPro COM objects.

Further improvements in FoxPro 7.0 include support for Web services (with which you can advertise your application's capabilities on a network) and Active Accessibility, which is Microsoft's set of hooks for devices and software that help handicapped people. There's also a copy of InstallShield Express included here, which enables you to create deployment packages that install the required files and make the needed settings on computers that will run your applications.

You wouldn't use FoxPro to store values for a performance-intensive software application, and it's a bit too costly to replace quick-and-dirty Access for simple database work. But for medium-size organizations that need to make it easier for people to share data, FoxPro's power and elegance promises to enable insiders to solve database problems with a minimum of outside consulting expense. --David Wall ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Most powerfull mid-sized database language available
VFP has always been a very good choice to handle data in a fast development cycle business world, but VFP7 brings many UI improvements that make it even easier to get things done fast and get new developers up to speed. The addition of VB-like intellisense reduces the F1 trips to check for syntax. The new strong typing will help reduce run-time errors as they should be caught by the compiler. VFP handles up to 2G of data per table, and can have as many tables in a database as you like. It also handles multiple user connections very well. You don't have the restrictions of some databases like ACCESS. When your data get too big, you can easily move to any ODBC SQL server (MSSQL, Oricle,...). VFP scales and integrates with SQL very easily. VFP7 adds on to its ability to be a fast processor of data for asp pages, the ability to integrate with SOAP for real-time messaging.

This is a great product for windows based data intensive development. I would suggest that anyone considering which language to use seriously consider VFP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not revolutionary, but solid advancements make it Necessary!
A lot of the enhancements to VFP7 are not necessarily noticed by those who don't lift the hood. Yes, the Intellisense is great and the ability to do XML transactions over the web is great, but don't forget about the ability to write/use web services (part of .Net), the fact you can create/run VFP6 apps without recompiling (try that with .Net). You can now do Event Binding to COM/ActiveX objects (3rd party controls), it has strong data typing (oh yes), it can "implement interfaces" like java, it has "database container events", it is OLE DB accessible by other apps (not just ODBC), it uses Installshield for installations, etc.

Visual Foxpro extends the VFP legacy of not leaving current developers behind while embracing the best of the newest technologies and wrapping them in the fastest database engine on Earth.

I use Visual Basic, C, Java, and Visual Foxpro - VFP allows me to build the most feature-rich, fast applications in the least amount of time which is crucial for any consultant!

5-0 out of 5 stars GET IT!! NOW
With all the fuzz round .NET quite a lot of developers seem to forget that desktop applications are still widely used. Well, with VFP one can create desktop apps that connect to the web just as easy. Either through the use of the browser or with web services, supply and consume XML webservices like a breeze and the web is your network.
Use just half the amount of lines you need in .NET to get things done and deploy your apps faster then a pure .NET developer can think of.
Get it, or even better get the latest and the best, VFP8.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Database You'll Ever Need
With Foxpro, you don't need ADO, recordsets, complicated SQL syntactical nightmares. It scales to incredible sizes, provides multi-user DB access right out of the box, has no overbearing customer facing run time licenses, and saves you big bucks. It connects smoothly to SQL server and Oracle. It exports data to Excel Spreadsheets with a single line of code. It's string handling is fast and efficient, and the environment focuses developers on data first. Version 7 has a few good enhancements like CursorToXML and .dll creation that make it worthwhile. The Intellisense is great if you don't already know the language.
I get more done with Foxpro in twenty minutes than most VB programmers do in a week!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Necessarily the Best Version Yet
The vest version yet??? Bull Hockey!!! This product has been generally available for less than a month. How could anyone know whether it is the "Best Version Yet". Some people just get carried away, or maybe they work for Microsoft.

Visual FoxPro is a powerful, flexible, and robust language for developing data base applications. Far superior to its competition. ....

But this upgrade is little more than an enhanced maintenance release. There are an even dozen useful language improvements -- most of which should have been incorporated into the language years ago.

There are some new development interface features that may aid development speed. Most of these (i.e. IntelliSense) have been available for years from third parties -- usually free.

This release falls far short of a major upgrade to the language. Bill Gates must need the money. I would wait for Version 8.0 if I had the choice. ... Read more

NuSphere Pro Advantage is precisely the same as NuSphere PHPEd Advantage, with one important difference: the version of MySQL that ships with NuSphere Pro Advantage is a NuSphere product called Enhanced MySQL, which is to say it performs faster and offers programmers greater flexibility in query design than standard MySQL.

Enhanced MySQL allows query designers to "atomize" sets of queries in such a way that the Enhanced MySQL engine--NuSphere calls it Gemini--treats them collectively as one unit. With atomization, either all of the queries in a unit are executed, or none of them are. It's a way to prevent your tables from becoming corrupted due to a crash in the middle of an execution cycle. Similarly, individual transactions are insulated from the effects of other transactions. Enhanced MySQL also--very significantly--supports explicit COMMIT and ROLLBACK commands. These allow programmers to specify when sets of queries go ahead, and when they get repealed.

Enhanced MySQL is the same product that ships with NuSphere MySQL Advantage. It's altogether better suited to applications that involve high transaction loads, and gives exclusively commercial database products--those from Oracle, Microsoft, Sybase, and others--a real challenge, particularly when you consider bang for the buck.

In addition to Enhanced MySQL, this package comes with a suite of tools and servers--installed simultaneously, if you like--that together make up a complete development and operating environment for dynamic Web sites. Included withNuSphere Pro Advantage is PHPEd, NuSphere's elegant IDE for PHP, MySQL, and various client-side languages such as JavaScript and HTML. It features an editor with context-sensitive function help and colored syntax highlighting. Tightly integrated with MySQL, the environment allows you to browse tables and their contents, and test SQL queries without switching to a different application.

The package also includes PHP, version 4.0.6. Naturally, this kit comes with a PHP interpreter. This is the actual run-time environment that reads, validates, and executes PHP scripts (those written in PHPEd and elsewhere). As a server-side scripting language, PHP is similar in function to Microsoft's Active Server Pages (ASP) and Sun's JavaServer Pages (JSP). It's particularly potent when paired with a MySQL database like the one included here.

NuSphere Pro Advantage also comes with Perl, version 5.6.1. Perl, like PHP, can be used to generate Web pages based on form submissions and query results. Its text-manipulation facilities are probably better than PHP's, but the question of which you use is largely a matter of personal taste.

Finally, users will also get Apache, version 1.3.20. The Apache Web server makes your applications available to all browsers by responding to HTTP requests. This kit ships with the mod_perl module for running Perl scripts and the mod_ssl module for providing Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption of communications.

As is typical of NuSphere products, PHPEd Advantage comes with a set of commercially available books instead of a custom-produced manual. It's a good strategy that keeps NuSphere from having to reinvent the wheel, particularly considering that the books are all generally respected ones:

  • PHP Pocket Reference
  • Apache Pocket Reference
  • Perl 5 Pocket Reference, Third Edition
  • MySQL/PHP Database Applications

The "advantage" in this product's name refers to a subscription service that comes with the CD-ROM in the box. Every quarter for a year, NuSphere ships its registered users an update disk with the latest stable versions of the four packages, plus additional goodies of their choosing. You get technical support, too: Web and e-mail support for a year.

NuSphere Pro Advantage is the product for you if you want the PHPEd software development environment and also require the enhanced performance and transaction management capabilities of Enhanced MySQL. It's the costliest of NuSphere's line, but it's also the best, and it costs far less than some of the database servers with which it competes. --David Wall ... Read more

About Fireworks 4:

Fireworks is a dedicated Web graphics application. You can create bothvector and bit-map images, optimize them for Web pages, and addnumerous special effects for export direct to HTML.

The starting point is a familiar range of drawing and painting tools, such as shapes, lines, brushes, pens, and selection tools. In thedefault vector mode they create editable, scalable objects, and inbit-map mode they paint pixels. Fireworks supports layers andmasks--virtual overlaid surfaces that you can edit independently, enablingdesigners to achieve a wide range of effects. For example, you can varyopacity and blending to fine-tune the final appearance. Other Fireworkspanels include color, stroke, fill, and effects. There is also alibrary panel where you can store graphic elements for reuse.

A key feature for Web designers is optimization. Fireworks offersmaximum control over the critical tradeoff between quality and size. Atwo-up and four-up view lets you compare the quality of original andoptimized versions, using techniques such as reducing color depth andremoving unused colors. The software offers strong support for GIF,JPEG, and PNG image formats. Fireworks also lets you create animationthat is exported as an animated GIF. It will also generate JavaScriptto produce image rollovers and, in this new version, pop-up menus. There is great support for hotspots and slices, techniques for mappingor dividing an image to support HTML features. Integration withMacromedia's Dreamweaver 4 is better than ever in version 4 ofFireworks. Dreamweaver UltraDev 4/Fireworks Studio combines the twoproducts at a lower price. You can export to Dreamweaver--or launchFireworks directly from Dreamweaver--edit an image, and save it backwith all Fireworks-specific information preserved. --TimAnderson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Approach Millennium Edition 9.5, the friendly database.
Lotus Approach 9.5 is by far, the easiest, yet awesomely powerful database available for novices, exprienced users and developers of 'lightweight' applications. What I like most about this product is; it's extremely easy to use graphical interface, superb report generating capabilities and most of all, its ability to read data created in other 'heavy duty' databases such as Access, Foxpro, Notes, Dbase and DB2.

This new version increases Approach's ability to work more closely with other database formats and it improves its ability to extract very specific and difficult to retrieve data.

If you have a burning need to access and customize that important data sitting in your company's hellish, propitiatory database program or you have tons of 'stuff' that needs cataloging. This software is for you! It will make you look like a big time programer but without the need to know a single word of code! ...

Amazon.com Review

PHPEd is NuSphere's answer to the slick IDEs of the big publishers. Designed to work with several languages--HTML, JavaScript, SQL, and especially PHP--the environment works well. Its easy-to-understand interface simplifies the creation of Web applications with HTML and JavaScript on the client side, PHP as the scripting language in the middle, and a MySQL database at the back end.

PHPEd's editor has prime importance. It's clever and uncluttered, and makes three key improvements on the capabilities of a basic editor: syntax highlighting, variable listing, and real-time syntax help. This last feature is especially helpful, as each time you enter a function name the editor will unobtrusively open up a small reference window that contains a one-line syntax guide for the function. You see what the mandatory and optional arguments are, what data types the arguments must be, and what data type the function returns.

The editor is nice, but its features alone probably won't motivate many programmers to pay for PHPEd. Integrated FTP for management of remote files is nice, too, but similarly, not enough to make someone buy. What might tip the balance is the first key appeal of this IDE, its debugger. With the PHPEd debugger you can add variables to a watch list and monitor their values as they change during step-by-step execution of a PHP script. You can also hover your mouse pointer over a variable name during stepped execution and see its value in a pop-up window. In addition to step-by-step execution, PHPEd allows you to establish breakpoints in your code.

The second big attraction of this kit is its ability to integrate closely with MySQL databases. Once you open a connection to a MySQL database from within PHPEd (the database can be local or on a remote server), you can easily browse the contents of the database as you formulate your programming strategy. Then, when you're ready to start writing PHP code that actually manipulates the database, you can test your SQL sentences in a convenient window.

PHPEd is not the extent of this package, however. It ships with a set of Web servers and language interpreters that together make up the back end for which PHPEd will help you write applications:

  • PHP 4.0.6. It's particularly potent when paired with a MySQL database.
  • MySQL 3.23.41. An open-source relational database management system (RDBMS) that's widely used, meticulously maintained, and easily manipulated with PHP. It supports standard SQL-92, and should be familiar to anyone who has done SQL work.
  • Perl 5.6.1. Perl, like PHP, can be used to generate Web pages based on form submissions and query results. Its text-manipulation facilities are probably better than PHP's, but the question of which you use is largely a matter of personal taste.
  • Apache 1.3.20.
The "advantage" in this product's name refers to a subscription service that comes in addition to the CD-ROM. Every quarter for a year, NuSphere ships its registered users an update disk that contains the latest versions of the four packages. You get support, too: Web and e-mail support for a year.

Overall, PHPEd Advantage does its job well. It establishes a solid back-end environment for Web development, and provides a good IDE for writing software. The whole solution is reasonably priced. It's a great choice if you work with PHP and MySQL. --David Wall ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Recent Win32 VB Convert
I recently decided not to upgrade my Microsoft VB6 development toolset to the latest .NET product. Basically driven by cost. I then decided to look for an IDE that could deliver similar functionality and decided upon Nusphere PHPed. This is fine product although I do not give 5 stars as I have found the debugger a little temperamental at times. In time I know this product will mature and become a valuable asset.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality PHP development tools
I was a very happy user of NuSphere MySQL when I decided to purchase PHPEd Advantage. I do consulting work for web site developers, and prefer PHP to ASP or CF.

I wanted more than a PHP debugger, which I got, but I am most happy with the debugger. It is very capable, and integrated into the editor and class browser. It compares very well to Visual C++, but I haven't used Visual .NET to compare.

Web publishing is with FTP. I have heard that the new version supports WebDAV and CVS archiving, but I haven't tried it yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional Developers Tools for PHP
Powerful, flexible product. While its integrated debugger is the best I've used, it's not the only reason to buy. The editor does a good job with HTML, PHP, Perl and Javascript. The tool incorporates push-button publishing to remote sites, manages projects, provides a class browser, and is an on-line linter.

Especially nice is its direct connection to MySQL, with SQL statement checking builtin. Direct preview of PHP pages using the (integrated Apache).

Equivalent to Microsoft Visual XXX but for PHP.

Client requires windoze, but servers can be linux/unix. Frequent updates (three functionality upgrades since June). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best x-platform, client-server application development tool
This latest version of 4D really helps keep it up with the competition, but in terms of turning out applications for small and large numbers of users quickly, it's got to be one of the best tools on the market, especially in a mixed PC/Mac environment.

Rather than being a RAD tool with a database engine bolted on, 4D is a completely integrated, database application development tool containing everything needed to create everything from single-user to large multi-user client-server systems. There's also an ODBC driver available for 4D server and 4D can act as a client to SQL and ODBC backends such as Oracle, MS SQL Server, Sybase, etc.

The new webserver in 4D 6.5 now makes it far easier to produce intranet/internet applications than ever before, and it makes it far easier to let web designers do all the design work.

The productivity increases with this latest version keep it well up with the competition, plus the engine speed improvements and additional internet features are an even bigger bonus. Add to that the interface improvements and loads of other new features and it's got to be the best value product ACI have ever released.

4D is a great tool for any sized application from single user to 150+ with the added benefit of having even more users connecting via the webserver, all in one box. It's even got a proper machine code compiler.

This package has everything you need to get started with 4D development as it comes with the compiler, plus the most popular plug-ins from ACI. ... Read more
