5-0 out of 5 stars Great Database Application
Now that you've read the previous 0 star rating, (tab buttons - give me a break), realize that FileMaker 7 is a great database development platform.

Just a few of the upgrade's improvements:

No File Size Limit (that's a heck of a lot of recipies Bob). The days of needing to migrate when a file hits the 2 Gig file size wall are OVER. Your database can grow to fill the largest hard drive a computer can support.

Multiple data tables per file.

Improved browser support of buttons and scripts through instant web publishing feature.

Improved security.

And if one is really worried about lining up their "tab buttons" on layouts, FileMaker offers a free 30 day evaluation for download from their website.

In fact, the only negative comment I can make is that the Server version won't be available until this summer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Use
I've been using FileMaker Pro for many years. I used to use Microsoft Access, but FileMaker is much easier to setup and share your data. I highly recommend this software for both Mac and Windows users.

1-0 out of 5 stars Only for recipe or CD collections databases
I purchased and installed this FileMaker Developer product and ran into a brick wall, that precludes its use as a serious development tool. FileMaker Pro suffers from the same deficiencies. My real rating is 0 stars.

Filemaker does not use tab controls. It gets around this shortcoming by requiring that a separate layout be designed for each tab. Importantly this is not just for the information on the tab, BUT FOR THE WHOLE COTTON-PICKIN layout!!!

Then when a user clicks on the tab "button", a new layout is repainted over the old. Even though Filemaker provides the ability to copy a form, I have found that the repainted forms "jump" and give an entirely unsatisfactory visual experience. Like watching a web form flicker repaint over a slow dial up connection.

Filemaker appears to be a maintenance nightmare. If you have a layout with header information and with a five tab area, and you wish to change the header information (field width, color, etc.) you have to change it five times on each layout!

I thought the purpose of databases was to normalize information, that is to reduce redundancy in data storage. Filemaker may reduce this redunduncy, but it it adds it back in spades when it comes to application development!

The screen flicker caused by full screen repaints and the large number of forms required to accomodated simple tab displays makes this a no brainer. Filemaker is fine for your receipe or CD collection database, but forget about using it for serious development. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dual Platform
Previous produt from Filemaker (version 6Dev) is overall satisfactory.
Even if the way of building tabs might take some work, other improvements do largely compensate for this weakness. To avoid the "flicker" one has just to be precise to the pixel in the placement of the layout elements. And FM does offer tools to do so even in version 6!
Previous versions and information from Filemaker Inc. clearly state that the intaller is dual platform, Mac AND Windows on the same disk. So, unless amazon is marketing a special version this product should also work for Mac computers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have been using for 2 months now.
I have been using Filemaker 7 for Mac for 2 motnhs now. I am so happy with all the improvements they have made. Hands down this is the best database program (Mac or PC) ever made. A must buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great software!
This Filemaker is the best version yet! Highly recommended!

2-0 out of 5 stars Filemaker Pro 7
I ran out an got this immediately when it was announced because I like to get the latest software and have been using Filemaker for over 10 years.
Now I want to go back to 6.
For some reason 7 is SLOWER than 6. All functions hang before executing from performing a find to changing between layout views there is a noticeable lag before the desired screen comes up and when you asked for it. Additionally once you perform the function you find yourself waiting. Especially performing finds I am noticing that it takes a while for the program to give me results. Since I use this function constantly that's a major pain in the ass. In 6 the delay between when I hit the find button and the results coming up was non existant. Performing finds in 6 on the same machine was lightning fast. In 7 it is not.
Since I use this function more than any other and because there is also an increase in wait times on many other functions in the program , like creating a new record, sorting and everything else, I would not reccomend this upgrade.

Amazon.com Review

FileMaker Pro 6.0 makes data management for individuals and small groups engaging and almost fun. Installation and setup are both surprisingly quick and easy, and the templates and wizards will have most users frolicking with their new or imported databases in just a couple of hours. The interface and design tools are comfortable for Windows users of all levels of experience. The software is not designed for the lowest common denominator, though--advanced users will find FileMaker Pro's scripting language for queries and other tasks handy, if not all-powerful.

Data entry couldn't be easier. For some formats, it's as simple as dragging and dropping folder contents, so multimedia management, for example, becomes almost trivial. FileMaker Pro's data manipulation tools are more powerful than before, which means administrators would do well to limit users or train them carefully. Searches, the meat of the package, are simple enough for beginners but offer enough complexity to keep power users happy. One new timesaving search feature is the extend/constrain function: if a search returns too few or too many results, it takes just one step to expand or contract search parameters.

Web-style integration in FileMaker Pro 6.0 has taken a huge step forward from version 5.5; the look and feel of the desktop is almost seamlessly translated to intranet application. However, those with more than 10 potential FileMaker users should pick up the unlimited-use version of the software. FileMaker can import and export XML, so data can be manipulated and then easily shared with non-users via a Web browser.

While there might be more powerful data management packages available, for a wide range of uses and users, FileMaker Pro 6.0 is tough to beat. --Rob Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Filemaker Pro 6 is great!
This versatile program is easy to use and yet makes the tech types happy. For the price there is no comparison!

Tanya Milligan

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastically Versatile Program!
To even compare FileMaker Pro with Access is absurd.

While FileMaker is not on the order of MySQL or Oracle in terms of speed and power, it is far more flexible and far less expensive than anything else available in this workgroup class of applications for any Windows or Mac environment.

You can start small, with just one or two computers and grow your solution into a fully server-based and remotely managed application. And if you should happen to need to migrate to a "big iron" type Database someday, such as MySql, conversion tools are available that will automate large parts of such a migration - including scripting. There are also a large number of third-party plugins should any other functionality be required down the road.

Importing and exporting data is a snap in just about any format. As for sharing data, FileMaker is unmatched and even includes a small-scale web server function in addition to the "instant web publishing" function.

It's an absolutely wonderful tool for any serious IT person that isn't threatened by a program that most non-IT people can understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding. More than most people need.
I have worked with very large databses (greater than 500 tables in Oracle and SyBase) and very small ones. If you are looking for a db implementation for less than $50,000, your first product to evaluate should be Filemaker. It will probably do all (and more) than you need. Anyone who says that MS Access is easier or more reliable than Filemaker either works for Microsoft or has some other unhelpful bias. Ask users and/or developers to show you databases built in the two products and you will see an enormous difference. The Access ones are likely to be crude and require frequent redevelopment work. The Filemaker ones are likely to be clean, reliable and flexible.

If you don't need the huge power of the big guns (Oracle, SyBase, IBM), ignore Filemaker at your own risk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding product that empowers users and designers alike!
Greetings Amazon reviewers..

Now that you've read the Microsoft commercial below from:
"Reviewer: A software user from Stratford, CT USA"
Who probably, "needs a kick in the pants!"

Here's the truth, this product has the capabilities for implementing a client / server database network easier than anything currently on the market! And the client / server capabilities are built in! And it doesn't matter if it's based on the PC OR the MAC. Further, once designed and implemented, will work seamlessly with both platforms on the network. Additionally, after extensive research for an insurance client that I just completed designing a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) for, it was BY FAR the least expensive alternative, ESPECIALLY relative to Microsoft. In addition, it has the lowest overhead (computing hardware/software requirements) relative to anything of its capabilities on the market. You can reference these system requirements (along with features) at their web site that really gives a good deal of information. Note these minimum requirements below that most systems/owners can easily handle these days:
(compare these minimum requirements to the latest version of Microsoft's Access or any other database for that matter)

PC
· Intel Compatible 90 MHz Pentium or higher
· 32 MB of RAM (or more)
· Windows 98, Me, NT4 (SP6), 2000, XP

Mac
· Power Mac or higher
· 32 MB of RAM
· OS 8.6 - 9.22

Mac OS X
· Apple G3 or higher
· 128 MB of RAM
· OS X 10.1

The client I was designing for had older PCs using Windows 98SE. Obviously, I used the PC version of the software, which is very similar to the Mac version. If I had decided to implement a Microsoft "solution" it would have involved upgrading not only the hardware but the operating systems too. Then, the cost of the Access copies (licenses) certainly doesn't come cheap either if you haven't compared lately. FoxPro didn't fair any better, SQL Server worse. Especially in a client <==> server design paradigm!

Bottom line, a fully customized relational database designed, developed and deployed on a network in record time with minimal cost to the owner (no new hardware or operating systems) and working from initial installation to this day with minimal database administration. FULLY compatible with either PC or MACs on the network and future operating system upgrades on either platform. Personally, I'm pleased and I know a business that is extremely happy. Win-win situation..

One thing I found rather nice is you can download a 30-day free trial of the basic Filemaker Pro software at their web site to see if it meets your needs - certainly a nice gesture. (filemaker.com)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product but why not the same discount as for the PC
Amazon continues to charge more for the Mac version of products which also appear for the PC. I wish they would tell us why this is so.

5-0 out of 5 stars My most important software package
Our company has been using FileMaker since 1989. As it is the only database Ive ever used (other than a brief experiment with 4D) I really can't compare it with anything else. I'm here to tell you it will do the job you want to do.

I won't use technospeak in my review, as I am here for the novice users (and anyone who is reading a review to determine if this software is for them is probably a novice). FileMaker will keep track of all your company info. Even if you are a one-person company it will work for you. When you have 100 employees on the payroll, it will still work for you. If you have never designed a database before, you can do it.

Now, you WILL have to devote some time to learn the software, but if you are to be administrating a database, youre going to have to be doing some maintenance anyway. With FileMaker, you can begin using your database the first day, then add more features later on as you add more records and more users. I recommend learning FileMaker as opposed to hiring your project out to a developer for the simple fact that YOU know your business best and you will constantly be making changes as your business changes. My philosophy is that it is better for YOU to learn FileMaker than for a developer to learn your business.

Go ahead and get it. You will be able to make beautiful, efficient databases if you take the time to learn it. This product will do the job. I guarantee it. Contact me and I will help you.

4-0 out of 5 stars And it works with fine with Excel
An update to my earlier review: Filemaker works great with Excel (contrary to what an earlier reviewer guessed, apparently without testing). Last week I built a small Filemaker database to track contributors and potential contributors to a charitable group with which I work. Yesterday, I received an Excel spreadsheet from another member of the group, and it contained nearly 1,000 names, addresses, and phone numbers. Importing it was a snap: I simply used the "Import" function, choosing Excel as the file-type I wanted to import. Filemaker gave me a nice graphical interface to match Excel columns to fields in my database; it also gave me the chance to add a new field if necessary. Then a button click and the data imported cleanly and quickly, without any problems.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mac Users Yes, PC Users NO!!!!
First of all for Mac, users this is your only option for a good reliable, well known database, so I recommend it to them most of all. For PC users however, stay very far away, Microsoft Access has all the tools you need already. Based upon user experience, I think Microsoft Access is much easier, (read carefully now, before you judge my review). People say that FileMaker is the easiest database ever created, but they are dead wrong, they have never tried Access. Entering information into the database in FileMaker is like thorns in your finger, it is so difficult. I tried to enter the date for my music collection and it kept on giving me an error message that it should be done a particular way, I followed its instructions and still ended up with the same error. Creating reports is also painful, unlike Microsoft Access which uses a simple tabed interface you can immediately switch from tables to creating quries and beautiful reports. In FileMaker, the database uses some sort of Visual Basic interface to create reports, Access uses simple wizards to get you where you are going. Access is also more powerful in terms of integration with SQL, ODBC, other database server products so there is no conflict with your data. FileMaker is simple and too weak for users to spend upto $..., buy Access and you will never regret it. And with the integration between other MS Office products, you will be amazed. One of the features I love the most is the ability to create mail merge documents using database information from Access into Microsoft Word. Your able to easily convert a database from Access to Excel, vice versa easily. All of this would be a head ache in FileMaker. If you are on the Windows platform, certainly Access is the best way to go! ... Read more

--Rob Lightner

5-0 out of 5 stars OS X and Filemaker Great Combination
I had to upgrade to get OS X functionality. Filemaker is the best database program around-- for all-around functionality, ease of use, and rapid deployment. I use Filemaker to run my business from accounting, to tracking, to letterhead and faxes. Now that Filemaker is XML, it's a real contender to any commercial database program. You can also access just about any database with Filemaker, and has great import/export functionality. From the amount of time Filemaker can save the average business, I think it's a must in any efficient or multi-tasking office.

3-0 out of 5 stars IT'S GOOD, BUT IT'S NOT A MUST-HAVE UPGRADE
The strength of "FileMaker Pro 6 Upgrade" is marginally above that of its immediate predecessor, (the 5.5 version). That said, anybody who still feels at home with the 5.5 version should not see this new one as a must-have upgrade. The improvements do not worth the asking price.
Yes, there is an improved interface, as well as loading speed; but what else? Technical support is minimal; and it is very likely that you will need it. This is because, you may discover one or two hitches as soon as you start running the software.

5-0 out of 5 stars Faster FileMaker Pro
Version 6.0 speeds up FileMaker Pro -- it loads much, much faster -- almost instantly -- curing the major shortcoming of previous versions.

The only quirk I've found is that in both Windows XP Pro and Windows 98 SE, FM Pro 6 will not show a list of recently opened files from the Files drop down menu. It simply refuses when I click the check box in "Preferences" to show recently opened files. It responds by saying that it cannot perform this function in this installation of FileMaker Pro. Technical support was of no help whatsoever! All they could suggest was to do a reinstallation in Safe Mode -- which, of course, made no difference. Tech support seemed to be reading from a script or manual. The guy had no working knowledge of the software at all. And tech support policies are very limited -- free support for installation and then one free tech support call (not on a toll-free number). Pardon the generalization, but the software industry really, really stinks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Faster, smoother - a joy to use
I've been using FileMaker since version 3 -- and this new Version 6 retains its user-friendly interface and commands. But the big improvement is in speed - the speed with which the application launches and the speed at which database files open -- much, much faster than in version 5.0 (in Windows XP and in Windows 98)! Otherwise, I'm still exploring. The only frustration I've come upon is that this version of FileMaker does not include a list of recently opened files in the File Menu (the option to do this is greyed out). Instead you can access a list of recently opened files from an arrow next to the "Open File" icon -- only after you have already opened a document file. V-e-r-r-r-y strange.

I cannot fathom what some other reviewer meant when he refered to FileMaker's "draconian" upgrade policies. Does he expect them to give it away for free? The upgrade price -- especially with the $$ rebate that brings it down to $$-- is quite reasonable for a program of this power and sophistication. It's FileMaker's support policy that disappoints, but then again the entire software industry seems to have moved in this direction (free support for installation and getting started; one free support call thereafter). Fortunately with FileMaker Pro, you rarely need to call technical support, the program is that easy to learn and use. It actually comes with a printed manual!

3-0 out of 5 stars Five-star program, but WIN update software flawed
I loved (5-star) FileMaker Pro (FMP) 5.5 and was keen on updating to the latest 6.0 version. Unfortunately, installation of the update was clunky in that it required that FMP 5.5 remain in place. Reasonable enough for copyright protection, except that my system ended up with two identically named FMP.exe files that thoroughly confused the registry. [Later I found yet another 2+MB FMP.exe in the installation folder that hadn't been cleaned up.] Yes, you can remove FMP 5.5 after installing 6.0, in a different folder, but that's not really good practice. When you plunk down a hefty sum for an upgrade, you shouldn't have to make repeated calls to Tech Help to make it work. Moreover, perhaps because I keep my programs and data in hard drive partitions separate from the operating system (C:\drive) file association (where an .fp5 file shows its identity in an Explorer listing with the FMP icon) never worked -- so that files could not be started by double-clicking their name, but required opening with FMP's File|Open command.

Worse, an update patch (downloaded from FMP website) converting FMP 6.01 to 6.02 crashed repeatedly, 5 calls to Tech Help notwithstanding. I gave up, it still isn't working!

My recommendation is to call Tech before installing the upgrade and insisting that you want to > uninstall FMP 5.x < PRIOR TO installing 6.0. The solution is surprisingly simple. At this writing, it might be least troublesome to install FMP6 in the default program location (C:\Program Files) -- a kludgy solution indicative of hasty release without thorough testing. Too bad, for the program is great -- but I've wasted 2 days and still don't have file association working. Perhaps you ought to hang on to FMP 5.0 or 5.5 (unless you badly need XML) until the mud has settled.

1-0 out of 5 stars Draconian Policies
I have had terrible experiences with this company regarding their Draconian upgrade policies. I suggest you avoid this product and this company. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Take the technology of FileMaker Pro on the road, and bring it back homeagain with FileMaker Mobile. FileMaker Mobile lets you import information fromyour FileMaker Pro 5.0 databases to your Palm OS handheld, so that you're neverat a loss while on the road.

In order to run FileMaker Mobile, you must have FileMaker Pro installed on yourpersonal computer. FileMaker Mobile works only with FileMaker Pro 5v3. If youhave a version that's earlier than 5.0, you must upgrade it to use FileMakerMobile. If you have a version that's between 5.0 and 5.0v2, you can upgrade itfor free. FileMaker Mobile runs on any handheld device that runs Palm OS version3.1 or higher and has at least 2 MB of free memory.

Syncing your files on your handheld device and your desktop is quick and easywith FileMaker Mobile. When syncing files, any changes that are made on eitherthe handheld or desktop are recorded in both places. There's no need to worryabout losing changes in one place and not seeing them in another, as long as theuser conscientiously remembers to sync on a regular basis.

Don't let fears about the small surface area of your Palm OS device cause you toshy away from this extraordinary tool. There's no need to rewrite any templatesor databases on the Palm OS device. Use FileMaker on your desktop computer forall of those database design tasks. FileMaker Mobile uses a simple, streamlinedinterface and feature set that's suited specifically to the small screen andcompact nature of the handheld device.

Overall, FileMaker Mobile can prove to be a formidable tool for avid users ofFileMaker Pro. Anyone or any company that uses both FileMaker Pro and Palm OSdevices should take advantage of the freedom and mobility that this softwareprovides. --Kendra Hayden ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Lousy Product / Lousy Technical Support
There must be something than this better out there. Though it says it's compatible with Windows 95+, the download version doesn't install properly on Windows 98 and the technical support team is a joke. Once you get it installed, the Palm-side databases are limited in function.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I hoped that this mobile version of Filemaker would be up to the standards of Filemaker 5, but it fell far short. FM mobile allows you to transfer only 20 fields of your database. Furthermore, you can't transfer calculation fields and you can't use pop-up menus. There's probably more that can't be done, but I returned it before I could find out. FM Sync/JFile is a sync/database application that allows more fields and doesn't have the other limits of Filemaker mobile.

1-0 out of 5 stars A bit of a let-down
Filemaker Pro is a great product. It's power lies in its relational capabilities and its scripting and calculation capabilities. I have been able to generate solutions to data storage and data relationships that even take me by surprise. The capability and flexibility of the product to layout information is better than any other software I've used.

These are just some of the reasons that Filemaker Mobile is a dissapointment.

A new user of Filemaker Pro may start by building flat databases that are little more than lists of items. Pretty quickly, however, the power of the product becomes apparent, and the user will be using relationships, calculations and scripts. Filemaker Mobile gives you none of these capabilities, and if you buy it, you'll be stuck where you began: building flat databases that are little more than shopping lists. So if your happy to fork out for this product only to find that the only thing worth synchronising is the database that contains your CD collection (the first one you ever designed), then go for it. Serious users should forget all the great applications that you thought this product would be able to provide when you heard the product was to become available.

Filemaker PLEASE release a Palm product worthy of your moniker.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good DB solution for the mac
Filemaker Mobile was simply in the right place at the right time. While on the pc side, you can sync your palmos device with outlook, unless you buy Office 2001, you cannot do that on a mac with the provided software. Which didn't really matter, all our client records were in our filemaker database anyway. Filemaker mobile provided us with a way to take our contact infomation with us, versus manually imputing 900 records. Installation was simple, all it requires is that you specify what fields you want echoed on the mobile device. The next HotSync takes a bit longer, but worked well. 900 records of general contact infomation plus the app itself took up under 300k of memory.

On the negative side, apparently, updates only work one way. So if the main database has a change, and the palm has a change, you have to duplicate a record and then manually re-edit. One-way updates work fine, either way you pick, although you do have to specify which database is the correct one. Also, because of the size of the screen, records in list form are centered, in that the title of the field is cut off on the left side. Minor problem, but can make reading similarly titled fields difficult.

Altogether a nice application, with just minor issues. ... Read more
