Amazon.com Review

Based on their best-selling C++ tutorial, Deitel and Deitel's C++Interactive Training Course repackages their comprehensive tour of C and C++into several dozen simple and digestible online lessons. While someelectronics books suffer when translated into hypertext, this CD-ROM versionactually makes the material more accessible for any beginning or intermediateC/C++ programmer.

The online viewer (which uses Java) organizes the original book's informationinto sections that cover basic and advanced topics, first in C and then inC++. Not only will you learn the fundamentals but chapters on using objectsand C++ templates show off advanced features too. With hypertext links to allsample code, programming tips, and hundreds of exercises, this electronicversion takes a rather dense printed book and makes it more streamlined.

The electronic version lets the reader choose what makes the most sense. Nolonger is the reader confronted with dozens of quotes from historicalfigures, for instance, as in the printed book. Here, you can get thismaterial via a button if you want it and safely ignore it otherwise.

A winning feature here is that each programming example is made available ina window so that you can cut and paste code into your own projects. You caneven run the sample code automatically from within the viewer and examine theoutput. Naturally, you can search and cross-reference topics via extensivehypertext links. In all, the C++ Interactive Training Course makes anexcellent choice for anyone who wants to learn C/C++ in an engaging,well-planned, and thorough online tutorial. --Richard Dragan ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars 5+ year old Pre-standardized C++? No thanks!
I bought this product thinking it would just be a quick intro to C++. It is a full course in C & C++, but written in 1997! The authors assume you have full access to development tools on a Unix machine to test the code, and the Java interface is very [poor] (program interface goes blank if another window covers it, difficult to recover from at first). You'd think they'd do the interface in C++ if they're such wizards.

Add to that they (obviously) do not take into account any of the advances in either the language, operating systems or the hardware over the last 5+ years and you've got a fairly useles (for learning, anyhow) product.

Keep away unless you really want to throw money away (might I suggest a worthy charity instead?), or just want it for historical reasons!

Amazon.com Review

Mentor sallies forth with a noble idea--provide a central utility forassembling scattered help and documentation files into a coherent help systemfor a piece of software--but fails to provide enough value to keep developersaway from proven ways of doing this work. When it comes down to it, Mentor islittle more than a file-management utility that generates index files. It'sawkward to learn and use.

Installation of Mentor went well--which is good, because we weren't able to getthrough to the Chilliware support site. The product runs under all Linuxdistributions that are based on the 2.2.x kernel. We installed under Red HatLinux 7.1 and had no compatibility problems.

As is the case with integrated development environments (IDEs) for softwareitself, the work you do in Mentor is grouped into projects. You create a newproject and use a three-paned window to manage what it contains. Essentially, you have one file tree on the left, containing all the files Mentor can seelocally and on the network. You have a second file tree in the middle pane, representing the files you've copied from the general file system into thecurrent project. The rightmost pane is a fairly crude text editor with which youcan modify the text and HTML files you've added to the project.

You might expect such a specialized program to perform its duties with a cleverinterface, optimized for the job. No such luck with Mentor. Even the process offile management is clunky. You can't drag and drop files: neither from thegeneral file system into the project nor among folders in the project. Gettingfiles to go into specific project folders is a tedious, multistep task. To get afile out of one project folder and into another, you apparently have to removethe file from the project completely, then re-add it to the folder you want.Mentor's user interface is a pain in small software projects; it's not at allsuitable for big documentation jobs.

The process of generating index files isn't all that automated either. Usersspend a lot of time in Mentor's text editor, inserting headers and taggingkeywords. This process is painful. And, irony of ironies, the user help systemfor Mentor is pretty bad. You'll spend a lot of time trying to figure out theprogram's conventions and techniques on your own. Though the results can be ofgood quality, help systems of equivalent quality can be built with a plain HTMLor text editor in combination with a general-purpose file manager.--DavidWall ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Visual Studio .NET is Microsoft’s multi-faceted development tool, targeting both Windows and Web applications. This 2003 edition includes numerous small improvements as well as major new features like the Compact Framework, for applications that run on Pocket PC and other smart devices. It supports multiple languages, with the main ones being Visual Basic, C#, and C++. There is also a Java-like language called J#, although J# applications only work on Windows so this is not a true Java development tool. The Visual Studio .NET environment is truly integrated. It makes extensive use of docking and tabbed windows, and there are plenty of project wizards along with huge amounts of online help. Auto-completion and pop-up help eases the business of editing code.

Microsoft’s .NET tools are very different from their predecessors. Visual C++ can still compile standard Windows executables, but the other languages all target the .NET Framework, a runtime engine and class library that manages memory and enforces security. Framework applications perform well, since they are compiled to native code at runtime, but there is an overhead in terms of memory usage and the Framework runtime must be installed. In compensation, .NET brings many advantages. All the languages are fully object-oriented, the class library is rich, and XML support is fully integrated. ASP.NET is for web applications, and represents a large advance on the old ASP. Instead of script, ASP.NET supports any of the .NET languages, running on the server and just-in-time compiled to native code. There is a visual web page designer, and carefully designed applications support a wide range of browsers. New in this version of Visual Studio is Mobile Web Forms, which use adaptive rendering to support the browsers in mobile phones and PDAs. The database technology in Visual Studio is called ADO.NET, and uses a disconnected model that is ideal for laptops, smart devices, and wide area networks.

Visual Studio .NET Enterprise Architect 2003 is the top of the range. It’s the only version to include Visio, a drawing and modelling tool with integrated reverse-engineering and code-generation, though sadly not full round-tripping. There are also developer licenses for the key Microsoft server platforms, including Windows Server 2003, Exchange 2000 Server, Biztalk Server and SQL Server 2000. Another key component is the Visual SourceSafe code management system, which is especially important for team development, Application Center Test, for stress-testing web applications, and Enterprise Templates which let architects design and deploy best practices for project development. For those wondering whether to make the jump to .NET, this release is probably the right moment to go ahead. The technology is maturing, and the inclusion of the Compact Framework makes the package more compelling. The deep XML support on offer is essential for many enterprise applications and enables integration with other platforms. It’s still important to note the heavy system requirements, and that .NET applications do not run on Windows 95. In most cases, the higher productivity of .NET languages soon pays for any additional resources. --Tim Anderson, Amazon.co.uk ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Visual Studio.NET 2003 Enterprise Architect
Microsoft Visual Studio.NET Enterprise Architecht enables programmers to take full advantage of the .NET platform. Visual Studio.NET allows programmers to utilize the newer .NET framework 1.1, which contains enhancements in security and performance.
This version of Visual Studio includes: Visual Basic.NET 2003, Visual C++.NET 2003, Visual C#.NET 2003, and Visual J#.NET 2003. Having access to all of the .NET languages means that you have the ability to code in whichever language is most appropriate to your project.

A few language enhancements have also been included in this version. One of the most useful is the ability to declare a variable inside a loop using VB.NET 2003. For example:

For each var1 as string in varArray
'Do action
Next

Microsoft also bundles a handful of useful utilities with this package. These utilities will enable you to monitor your applications, benchmark web services, obfuscate your code, and much more.

.NET has a slightly different syntax than earlier versions of the languages (ie version 6), so if you are new to .NET a reference book would be handy.

Visual Studio.NET 2003 is worth the upgrade.

If you are a developer using several Microsoft technologies, a MSDN subscription is very helpful. MSDN Universal subscriptions include Visual Studio Enterprise Architect, developer licenses for all Microsoft operating systems, developer licenses for all Microsoft server systems, Microsoft Office Professional Enterprise edition, and more. MSDN subscribers have access to support via managed newsgroups and phone support. ... Read more

Dreamweaver UltraDev is an enhanced version of Macromedia'sleading Web-authoring tool. The standout additional feature is dynamiccontent, which is when pages have live links to databases or othertypes of server-side scripting. Most products of this type requireextensive manual coding, but UltraDev has an extensive library ofbuilt-in scripts, called Server Behaviors, that allow even moderatelysophisticated sites to be built with little or no code. Version 4 lookssimilar to its predecessor, but includes important changes that make itmore complete and easier to use.

One of the best new features is the split code and design view, whichlets you edit either the code or the visual design and see changesinstantly echoed between them. There is also built-in security, so youcan create login procedures and password-protected sites. Finally, theLive Objects wizards automatically create page elements to handlecommon tasks, such as a master/detail page set, or forms to insert andupdate records.

UltraDev supports three kinds of server-side scripting: Active ServerPages, JavaServer Pages, and Cold Fusion. Unfortunately, it does notsupport PHP, which is popular on Linux and Unix servers, althoughbecause UltraDev is extensible, there may be some third-party add-ins.The features for the three models are similar but not identical, although in every case there is excellent database support. Its greatstrength is that you can focus on designing your pages and let UltraDevhandle the data access code. You can even display live data at designtime, making it easier to get exactly the right appearance.

Everything in Dreamweaver is also in UltraDev, so this is the idealpackage for Web authors who need to add dynamic content with a minimumof fuss. --Tim Anderson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply THE best web dev combination
DreamWeaver Rocks. Fireworks Rocks. Together they make for a spectacular web design/development combination.

Dreamweaver is packed with features for the beginner through advanced web developer; it's easy and intuitive to use. It may take you a while to learn all the capabilities, but with each successive feature you discover and master, the development process becomes easier and faster.

Fireworks is the best in class web graphics software. It integrates very well with DreamWeaver. Creating animated GIFs is a snap, as is image optimization (file compression), image map creation, and exploring full tables (HTML and all!) for use in DreamWeaver.

You simply cannot go wrong with this package. Photoshop still has its place, but if you focus exclusively on the web and don't need to do exquisite image editing this bundle is all you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome
I've been doing web development since 1996 and, to be honest, I fought tooth and nail against giving up Windows Notepad as my web development tool of choice. Microsoft FrontPage really ruined web development software for me and I pretty much vowed to avoid such applications in the future. Fortunately, my boss insisted that I use Dreamweaver and even sent me off to classes to learn the nuts and bolts. And now I'm hooked.

Dreamweaver is simply awesome and I can't imagine ever going back. Whether your a novice or professional, you'll come to love Dreamweaver's simple interface and ability to tackle otherwise tedious tasks -- such as Cascading Style Sheets, tables, layers -- with ease. Adding Flash, Shockwave or Java is as simple as it can possibly be. I took classes on Dreamweaver, but only because my boss insisted. The software is pretty easy to learn, though those with web development experience will have a fuller understanding (and respect) for the capabilities of the product.

The single most powerful part of Dreamweaver is the use of templates, which allow you to use the same look and feel across multiple pages and have all those pages updated when you make changes to the template. This alone will save you hours!

Another great thing about Dreamweaver is that creates clean HTML. This is something that any developer who has ever had to edit the HTML directly will respect -- especially if you've ever tried to make sense of FrontPage HTML nonsense.

Finally, the FTP application in Dreamweaver is outstanding. It keeps track of every page, graphic, link, etc. in your site and any change to any of them is cascaded through the entire site -- automatically updating links where necessary. With a simple click of a button your site is uploaded to your webserver.

There are so many features I haven't covered, but with the little I have this product is worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stupidly Discontinued!
Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4. They have turned this once great web design package into a hybrid cross of something that looks like Netscape/Flash and called it Dreamweaver MX 2004.

I used Dreamweaver MX 2004 for a month, uninstalled it and went back to Dreamweaver 4. It really is that terrible and the work space is terribly cluttered making it very hard to work within.

Bottom Line -- Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 instead if you can find it. Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 is a very good web design package that knocks Dreamweaver MX 2004 for ten. You will simply hate Dreamweaver MX 2004 when you install it on your system. I nearly barfed after a month of using that *new* completely hostile and non-user friendly piece of unstable and slow excuse for a web design software program.

Get this instead ... if you can find it...

5-0 out of 5 stars Review for Dreamweaver 5
-This review is for Dreamweaver 5- I absolutely love this software. I had Adobe Go Live but I never seemed to take to it like I did with Dreamweaver. Once it was installed within a day, I had made several webpages. As I continued to use it I learned more and more intuitively without needing much guidance from the manual. As a user you can create your webpages visually or in code mode, this makes it a great option for anyone no matter what your skill - it can be adjusted to suit your needs. You can learn and develop your webpage skills as much or as little as you like. You do not need to be intimidated by it's high price. You can learn it and the cost is well worth the output. ...
I don't have to look for anything else, I have hit paydirt with this program! If you are using Front Page or any other visual interface for ease, you know that you are trapped into a forced format, get this program and you will understand the freedom of control without fear!
