Amazon.com Review

Probably the best midrange database development system on the market, Microsoft Visual FoxPro 7.0 Professional Edition takes the ease-of-use and gentle learning curve that are characteristic of Microsoft Access and combines them with the scalability and feature-richness of Microsoft SQL Server 2000. The result is an eminently refined database development system, ideal for projects that aren't performance intensive.

FoxPro disproves the notion that database development and administration are black sciences, comprehensible only to specialists. This database suite demonstrates that you can do meaningful database work in an environment that can be figured out intuitively. The operative word is meaningful. FoxPro is not a friendly-but-feeble database management system you can use only to manage your recipes. Despite its friendly interface, it's a serious database tool.

The traditional way to use FoxPro is to develop a database on a server machine, then compile client applications--which rely on the freely distributable FoxPro runtime environment--to make queries against that server. That's still a good solution, but version 7.0 includes an object linking and embedding (OLE) database provider, with which you can expose FoxPro databases to non-FoxPro client applications. You can also increase your range of client compatibility by choosing to serve your data from Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Edition (MSDE), which ships with this product. Taking the MSDE path also makes future upgrades to the full version of SQL Server easier. It's straightforward to connect FoxPro databases with Internet Information Services (IIS) sites, which means FoxPro can serve as your Web site's back end. So, even though FoxPro isn't technically part of Microsoft's .NET architectural initiative, this new version is a lot more network-centric than any of its ancestors.

A lot of thought--and many years of customer feedback--have clearly gone into the design of this product. It's hard to imagine how the process of setting up a database could be made easier, since all you need to do is use simple menu commands to create a new project and populate it with databases, tables, queries, and the other elements of a useful application. To create a table, for example, you can choose to use a wizard that presents you with some typical tables--contacts, invoices, products, and so on--and the fields each kind of table typically contains. You can then choose to include in your table all or some of an example table's fields, supplement those fields with fields of your own making, and start collecting data.

The most immediately obvious new user-interface feature is IntelliSense, a longtime feature of other Microsoft products. IntelliSense will automatically complete function names and do syntactical grunt work for you as you type code. You can turn off IntelliSense, or modify its behavior, if you find it intrusive. Other interface changes include dockable windows and toolbars, and a couple of new ways to navigate around large code passages. There's also a new Object Browser tool you can use to examine and refer to the COM objects in your application's environment.

If you prefer to work with code and a command line, FoxPro has your number, as well. You can type commands and arguments that create databases, tables, relationships, views, reports, and queries, to say nothing of full-fledged business applications. The FoxPro language, like its graphical user interface, has been expanded and refined over the years. Microsoft has added more than 50 new commands, functions, and system variables to the language since its last release. Many of the more interesting ones--like XMLUPDATEGRAM() for sending database change notifications--have to do with importing and exporting data in Extensible Markup Language (XML). It's also now possible to monitor and react to events thrown by non-FoxPro COM objects.

Further improvements in FoxPro 7.0 include support for Web services (with which you can advertise your application's capabilities on a network) and Active Accessibility, which is Microsoft's set of hooks for devices and software that help handicapped people. There's also a copy of InstallShield Express included here, which enables you to create deployment packages that install the required files and make the needed settings on computers that will run your applications.

You wouldn't use FoxPro to store values for a performance-intensive software application, and it's a bit too costly to replace quick-and-dirty Access for simple database work. But for medium-size organizations that need to make it easier for people to share data, FoxPro's power and elegance promises to enable insiders to solve database problems with a minimum of outside consulting expense. --David Wall ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best yet!
I have been working in FoxPro and Visual FoxPro for 7 years now. With each upgrade, FoxPro has only gotten better. With Web Service, IntelliSense, XML, and OLE DB, this is the best yet! I've only been working with for a few days now, but I can't wait to find out what lies in store for me. It's a programmer's dream come true.

5-0 out of 5 stars VFP web rocks!!
VFP has always been about speed and now this version makes it extremely easy to put that database and string processing speed to use in VFP mtdlls and XML Web Services. For rapidly developing web apps, compare the speed, robustness, and scalability of VFP 7 to anything out there(yes, Oracle too) at a fraction of the price of other solutions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Must have for VFP Developers
Although serious VFP developers invariably upgrade with each new version I'd upgrade to version 7 just for the intellisense feature alone. Other development languages have had this for years and it was sorely missed from FoxPro. To me, intellisense alone is worth the price of this upgrade not even mentioning the other other improvements and new features such as XMLToCursor, CursorToXML, OLEDB provider, and much more. Intellisense doesn't cure world hunger I know but I love it! What a time saver. Should of been in VFP long ago. Also the very first beta was astonishingly stable for a pre-release which is a good sign. If you develop with Visual FoxPro at all this is one version upgrade you will not want to wait getting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a must have for the serious database developer.
Having been an early Beta Tester for VFP7 I must say that I am extremely pleased with its performance and its enhancements from previous versions.

An excellent improvement on a very mature and stable OOP database development language, it is well at ease using its native data engine as well as working asa front end or middle tier for any other DBMS, from SQL Server to Oracle to MySQL.

It finally brings Intellisense and an OLEDB Provider!

Visual FoxPro is the only Microsoft development language that can play in any tier of an N-Tier system.

It works well with all the current technologies, MTS, COM, COM+, ADO, XML, ActiveX, etc.

Well worth your adding it to your programmer's toolset!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fox is back
VFP 7.0 has dramatically improved its IDE, including an awesome data driven implementation of Intellisense that is completely customizable, making it one of the best available. But thats not all, improved speed, stability, and XML support, along with the long list of language enhancements suggested by VFP users add up to make this one of the most powerful and easy to use Database tools available. ... Amazon.com Review

FileMaker Pro 6.0 makes data management for individuals and small groups engaging and almost fun. Installation and setup are both surprisingly quick and easy, and the templates and wizards will have most users frolicking with their new or imported databases in just a couple of hours. The interface and design tools are comfortable for Windows users of all levels of experience. The software is not designed for the lowest common denominator, though--advanced users will find FileMaker Pro's scripting language for queries and other tasks handy, if not all-powerful.

Data entry couldn't be easier. For some formats, it's as simple as dragging and dropping folder contents, so multimedia management, for example, becomes almost trivial. FileMaker Pro's data manipulation tools are more powerful than before, which means administrators would do well to limit users or train them carefully. Searches, the meat of the package, are simple enough for beginners but offer enough complexity to keep power users happy. One new timesaving search feature is the extend/constrain function: if a search returns too few or too many results, it takes just one step to expand or contract search parameters.

Web-style integration in FileMaker Pro 6.0 has taken a huge step forward from version 5.5; the look and feel of the desktop is almost seamlessly translated to intranet application. However, those with more than 10 potential FileMaker users should pick up the unlimited-use version of the software. FileMaker can import and export XML, so data can be manipulated and then easily shared with non-users via a Web browser.

While there might be more powerful data management packages available, for a wide range of uses and users, FileMaker Pro 6.0 is tough to beat. --Rob Lightner

5-0 out of 5 stars OS X and Filemaker Great Combination
I had to upgrade to get OS X functionality. Filemaker is the best database program around-- for all-around functionality, ease of use, and rapid deployment. I use Filemaker to run my business from accounting, to tracking, to letterhead and faxes. Now that Filemaker is XML, it's a real contender to any commercial database program. You can also access just about any database with Filemaker, and has great import/export functionality. From the amount of time Filemaker can save the average business, I think it's a must in any efficient or multi-tasking office.

3-0 out of 5 stars IT'S GOOD, BUT IT'S NOT A MUST-HAVE UPGRADE
The strength of "FileMaker Pro 6 Upgrade" is marginally above that of its immediate predecessor, (the 5.5 version). That said, anybody who still feels at home with the 5.5 version should not see this new one as a must-have upgrade. The improvements do not worth the asking price.
Yes, there is an improved interface, as well as loading speed; but what else? Technical support is minimal; and it is very likely that you will need it. This is because, you may discover one or two hitches as soon as you start running the software.

5-0 out of 5 stars Faster FileMaker Pro
Version 6.0 speeds up FileMaker Pro -- it loads much, much faster -- almost instantly -- curing the major shortcoming of previous versions.

The only quirk I've found is that in both Windows XP Pro and Windows 98 SE, FM Pro 6 will not show a list of recently opened files from the Files drop down menu. It simply refuses when I click the check box in "Preferences" to show recently opened files. It responds by saying that it cannot perform this function in this installation of FileMaker Pro. Technical support was of no help whatsoever! All they could suggest was to do a reinstallation in Safe Mode -- which, of course, made no difference. Tech support seemed to be reading from a script or manual. The guy had no working knowledge of the software at all. And tech support policies are very limited -- free support for installation and then one free tech support call (not on a toll-free number). Pardon the generalization, but the software industry really, really stinks. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Deceptive Claims
The big book inside the box is NOT the "Teach Yourself..." text. It is the manual for the C++ 4.5 complier for 16 bit applications in Windows 1.0. (Does ANYONE still use Windows 1.0?!) The "Teach Yourself..." text is available online for free, at least in its 21 day version (by the same author).

You will probably be unsuccessful choking down object oriented programming in a new language in 14 days. I understand 6 weeks is average. I took about 5 weeks. I already had experience with some older programming languages (BASIC, Fortran, DB, Korn), and I'm fairly adept at these sorts of things.

Although the documentation says you'll be able to produce stand-alone programs with the "Learn to Program with Borland C++ Builder 1.0" (not the same as "Borland C++ Builder 1.0"), I wasn't able to find a way to do that. Attempting to run an .exe compiled with this builder will result in the error message, "This program must be run within the C++ Builder environment," which means must first launch C++ Builder.

The "Teach Yourself..." text briefly discusses GDI's, which are the classes that you might use to, say, to draw a graph. The Builder apparently has these components available, but with little or no documentation. They certainly weren't in any usable form. Trying to access their properties was a joke. For instance, I had to guess at the correct usage of TCanvas (a bit like a virtual sheet of paper) based on discussions I gleaned from the Internet. I kept guessing wrong until I gave up.

This package is useful for DOS programmers and anyone wanting to write DOS-box programs for use under Windows. However, those wanting to do more are better advised to buy the C++ Builder 6 personal edition for about the same price. Then either buy a good [...] book or find the "Teach Yourself..." book online for free.

I am about to buy the Builder 6 and RMA the Turbo C++ suite back to Borland for a refund. (Hint: It will probably take you longer than the 30 day return period to figure out what this package won't do for you.)

... Never again will I trust any software with turbines.

5-0 out of 5 stars First time owner of C++...long time programmer.
This product is very no nonsense. For anyone who grew up programming in DOS, this is THE product. I wrote my first class object 45 mins after opening the package. Borland could have been a bit more verbose in project organization in DOS, but it's everything a 16 bit/DOS programmer dreams of. Documentation, very good... product examples, programs, etc., spectacular. Ease of installation, a snap! This is a MUST for anyone supporting clients still in DOS, and I know dozens here in Juneau.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why buy this?
Why buy the TC++ Suite? Depends on your needs, as a game programmer I make a lot of 'test' apps, menu systems, map editors, and debuggers; and I really don't want to waiste my time making this stuff work in wondows, when it works twice as fast in DOS. So, if you need to make apps that work in DOS the TC++ 3.0 and 4.5 are right for you. If you just want to learn C++ and Windows, I say buy the C++ Builder 5 or VC++ 6, and don't waiste your money on something you will only use for three months and then put away in a closet, never to be used again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Turbo Ok
This is a 7 year old product. Why not buy C++Builder 5.0 Standard for the same price, also made by Borland ? It has a powerful RAD Environment, Great debugger, and supports WIn 95, Win 98, Win NT and Win 2000 . ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Faster, smoother - a joy to use
I've been using FileMaker since version 3 -- and this new Version 6 retains its user-friendly interface and commands. But the big improvement is in speed - the speed with which the application launches and the speed at which database files open -- much, much faster than in version 5.0 (in Windows XP and in Windows 98)! Otherwise, I'm still exploring. The only frustration I've come upon is that this version of FileMaker does not include a list of recently opened files in the File Menu (the option to do this is greyed out). Instead you can access a list of recently opened files from an arrow next to the "Open File" icon -- only after you have already opened a document file. V-e-r-r-r-y strange.

I cannot fathom what some other reviewer meant when he refered to FileMaker's "draconian" upgrade policies. Does he expect them to give it away for free? The upgrade price -- especially with the $$ rebate that brings it down to $$-- is quite reasonable for a program of this power and sophistication. It's FileMaker's support policy that disappoints, but then again the entire software industry seems to have moved in this direction (free support for installation and getting started; one free support call thereafter). Fortunately with FileMaker Pro, you rarely need to call technical support, the program is that easy to learn and use. It actually comes with a printed manual!

3-0 out of 5 stars Five-star program, but WIN update software flawed
I loved (5-star) FileMaker Pro (FMP) 5.5 and was keen on updating to the latest 6.0 version. Unfortunately, installation of the update was clunky in that it required that FMP 5.5 remain in place. Reasonable enough for copyright protection, except that my system ended up with two identically named FMP.exe files that thoroughly confused the registry. [Later I found yet another 2+MB FMP.exe in the installation folder that hadn't been cleaned up.] Yes, you can remove FMP 5.5 after installing 6.0, in a different folder, but that's not really good practice. When you plunk down a hefty sum for an upgrade, you shouldn't have to make repeated calls to Tech Help to make it work. Moreover, perhaps because I keep my programs and data in hard drive partitions separate from the operating system (C:\drive) file association (where an .fp5 file shows its identity in an Explorer listing with the FMP icon) never worked -- so that files could not be started by double-clicking their name, but required opening with FMP's File|Open command.

Worse, an update patch (downloaded from FMP website) converting FMP 6.01 to 6.02 crashed repeatedly, 5 calls to Tech Help notwithstanding. I gave up, it still isn't working!

My recommendation is to call Tech before installing the upgrade and insisting that you want to > uninstall FMP 5.x < PRIOR TO installing 6.0. The solution is surprisingly simple. At this writing, it might be least troublesome to install FMP6 in the default program location (C:\Program Files) -- a kludgy solution indicative of hasty release without thorough testing. Too bad, for the program is great -- but I've wasted 2 days and still don't have file association working. Perhaps you ought to hang on to FMP 5.0 or 5.5 (unless you badly need XML) until the mud has settled.
