Dreamweaver UltraDev is an enhanced version of Macromedia'sleading Web-authoring tool. The standout additional feature is dynamiccontent, which is when pages have live links to databases or othertypes of server-side scripting. Most products of this type requireextensive manual coding, but UltraDev has an extensive library ofbuilt-in scripts, called Server Behaviors, that allow even moderatelysophisticated sites to be built with little or no code. Version 4 lookssimilar to its predecessor, but includes important changes that make itmore complete and easier to use.

One of the best new features is the split code and design view, whichlets you edit either the code or the visual design and see changesinstantly echoed between them. There is also built-in security, so youcan create login procedures and password-protected sites. Finally, theLive Objects wizards automatically create page elements to handlecommon tasks, such as a master/detail page set, or forms to insert andupdate records.

UltraDev supports three kinds of server-side scripting: Active ServerPages, JavaServer Pages, and Cold Fusion. Unfortunately, it does notsupport PHP, which is popular on Linux and Unix servers, althoughbecause UltraDev is extensible, there may be some third-party add-ins.The features for the three models are similar but not identical, although in every case there is excellent database support. Its greatstrength is that you can focus on designing your pages and let UltraDevhandle the data access code. You can even display live data at designtime, making it easier to get exactly the right appearance.

Everything in Dreamweaver is also in UltraDev, so this is the idealpackage for Web authors who need to add dynamic content with a minimumof fuss.

About Fireworks 4:

Fireworks is a dedicated Web graphics application. You can create bothvector and bit-map images, optimize them for Web pages, and addnumerous special effects for export direct to HTML.

The starting point is a familiar range of drawing and painting tools, such as shapes, lines, brushes, pens, and selection tools. In thedefault vector mode they create editable, scalable objects, and inbit-map mode they paint pixels. Fireworks supports layers andmasks--virtual overlaid surfaces that you can edit independently, enablingdesigners to achieve a wide range of effects. For example, you can varyopacity and blending to fine-tune the final appearance. Other Fireworkspanels include color, stroke, fill, and effects. There is also alibrary panel where you can store graphic elements for reuse.

A key feature for Web designers is optimization. Fireworks offersmaximum control over the critical tradeoff between quality and size. Atwo-up and four-up view lets you compare the quality of original andoptimized versions, using techniques such as reducing color depth andremoving unused colors. The software offers strong support for GIF,JPEG, and PNG image formats. Fireworks also lets you create animationthat is exported as an animated GIF. It will also generate JavaScriptto produce image rollovers and, in this new version, pop-up menus. There is great support for hotspots and slices, techniques for mappingor dividing an image to support HTML features. Integration withMacromedia's Dreamweaver 4 is better than ever in version 4 ofFireworks. Dreamweaver UltraDev 4/Fireworks Studio combines the twoproducts at a lower price. You can export to Dreamweaver--or launchFireworks directly from Dreamweaver--edit an image, and save it backwith all Fireworks-specific information preserved. --TimAnderson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply THE best web dev combination
DreamWeaver Rocks. Fireworks Rocks. Together they make for a spectacular web design/development combination.

Dreamweaver is packed with features for the beginner through advanced web developer; it's easy and intuitive to use. It may take you a while to learn all the capabilities, but with each successive feature you discover and master, the development process becomes easier and faster.

Fireworks is the best in class web graphics software. It integrates very well with DreamWeaver. Creating animated GIFs is a snap, as is image optimization (file compression), image map creation, and exploring full tables (HTML and all!) for use in DreamWeaver.

You simply cannot go wrong with this package. Photoshop still has its place, but if you focus exclusively on the web and don't need to do exquisite image editing this bundle is all you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome
I've been doing web development since 1996 and, to be honest, I fought tooth and nail against giving up Windows Notepad as my web development tool of choice. Microsoft FrontPage really ruined web development software for me and I pretty much vowed to avoid such applications in the future. Fortunately, my boss insisted that I use Dreamweaver and even sent me off to classes to learn the nuts and bolts. And now I'm hooked.

Dreamweaver is simply awesome and I can't imagine ever going back. Whether your a novice or professional, you'll come to love Dreamweaver's simple interface and ability to tackle otherwise tedious tasks -- such as Cascading Style Sheets, tables, layers -- with ease. Adding Flash, Shockwave or Java is as simple as it can possibly be. I took classes on Dreamweaver, but only because my boss insisted. The software is pretty easy to learn, though those with web development experience will have a fuller understanding (and respect) for the capabilities of the product.

The single most powerful part of Dreamweaver is the use of templates, which allow you to use the same look and feel across multiple pages and have all those pages updated when you make changes to the template. This alone will save you hours!

Another great thing about Dreamweaver is that creates clean HTML. This is something that any developer who has ever had to edit the HTML directly will respect -- especially if you've ever tried to make sense of FrontPage HTML nonsense.

Finally, the FTP application in Dreamweaver is outstanding. It keeps track of every page, graphic, link, etc. in your site and any change to any of them is cascaded through the entire site -- automatically updating links where necessary. With a simple click of a button your site is uploaded to your webserver.

There are so many features I haven't covered, but with the little I have this product is worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stupidly Discontinued!
Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4. They have turned this once great web design package into a hybrid cross of something that looks like Netscape/Flash and called it Dreamweaver MX 2004.

I used Dreamweaver MX 2004 for a month, uninstalled it and went back to Dreamweaver 4. It really is that terrible and the work space is terribly cluttered making it very hard to work within.

Bottom Line -- Get Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 instead if you can find it. Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 is a very good web design package that knocks Dreamweaver MX 2004 for ten. You will simply hate Dreamweaver MX 2004 when you install it on your system. I nearly barfed after a month of using that *new* completely hostile and non-user friendly piece of unstable and slow excuse for a web design software program.

Get this instead ... if you can find it...

5-0 out of 5 stars Review for Dreamweaver 5
-This review is for Dreamweaver 5- I absolutely love this software. I had Adobe Go Live but I never seemed to take to it like I did with Dreamweaver. Once it was installed within a day, I had made several webpages. As I continued to use it I learned more and more intuitively without needing much guidance from the manual. As a user you can create your webpages visually or in code mode, this makes it a great option for anyone no matter what your skill - it can be adjusted to suit your needs. You can learn and develop your webpage skills as much or as little as you like. You do not need to be intimidated by it's high price. You can learn it and the cost is well worth the output. ...
I don't have to look for anything else, I have hit paydirt with this program! If you are using Front Page or any other visual interface for ease, you know that you are trapped into a forced format, get this program and you will understand the freedom of control without fear!

1-0 out of 5 stars Easy for.... WHO?
I happened on this product today while looking for other things. I immediately had an urge to be a good citizen and warn others about this product. I suppose it would be EASY for someone who already knows how to program in Visual Basic. I don't. That's why I bought the program. I need EASY. I was very dissapointed and frustrated because there is a skill in communicating to others where you don't go over their head and that you don't talk down to them. This program assumes too much about users and we know what happens when we (ass)ume things :)

Instant.exe 2.0 is great for making simple programs, and some more advanced ones too. The reason I purchased this program was to delete my friends Counter-Strike CD key he stole from me, and I was sucessful. This might be a little difficult for people with zero computer or programing experinces.

4-0 out of 5 stars Remember VB 1.0?
I remember VB 1.0 I was project leader 12 years ago on a job that needed a GUI visualization front-end (the core was a telephony application to be written in C). I could have had the front-end custom written in Motif with Unix workstations, but that would have been prohibitively expensive.

VB had been on the market for just one week, and I knew it was ragged and not mature. But it did the job. And it was dirt cheap.

And so with Data Analyzer. Sure, it's ragged and immature (no cross-tabs in the grid, for example). But at less than 200 bucks a pop, it's BI for the masses. Will it do the job? Maybe 70% of it. Compared to zero for most business users currently, that's a quantum leap. And all this thin/thick client business? What does a business user care about the techie stuff? Am I going to see about installing en masse into my clent base? Absolutely!

Your point about Business Objects etc is well taken. I put BO into my last two clients. It's fabulously powerful. But it's also several thou per seat! The one to worry about is Crystal Analysis. In my view, this is direct competition. Especially when I can put DA onto a hundred desktops for about 6K with volume discounts.

I expect to see DA bundled eventually. Probably not into Office, more likely into the SQL Server bundle. This one is a stayer. If I were an ISV Partner, I'd be losing sleep.

2-0 out of 5 stars There are better products out there
Unfortunately I was pretty disappointed by Data Analyzer. I was looking for a better OLAP interface than Microsoft Excel and this isn't it.

The majority of the interface centers around bar charts (though pie charts and data grids are also available). On the bar charts it is possible to assign one measure to the length of the bar and another measure to the color of the bar. Data Analyzer then creates a color gradient in hopes of showing you "good" and "bad" using color. This is actually a pretty neat feature, but I found it to be little more than eye candy. Personally I believe there are better graphical representations of multidimensional data.

The product does include a "Business Center" tool that allows you to ask canned questions against the data. One of these questions returns a similarity analysis. Again, a very neat feature, but not enough to justify the package.

Overall, I think Excel will serve as a good OLAP interface for most users. Beyond that, products such as ProClarity and BusinessObjects offer much more in terms of an "advanced" OLAP client. ... Read more

Visual Studio .NET is a superb, next-generation development tool. At its heart is the .NET Framework, a runtime engine and class library that enables rapid application building for both Windows and Web applications. The runtime engine handles housekeeping tasks, like memory management, while also providing fine-grained security and version awareness. The class library reduces the code needed to build rich applications. Visual Studio .NET also provides a slick visual environment, with features like tabbed and docking windows, dynamic online help, and automatic code completion and hints.

The common runtime is language-neutral so, for example, Visual Basic programmers can use components written in C# and vice versa. Other languages, such as COBOL and FORTRAN, can plug into Visual Studio, and Microsoft provides a version of the Java language called J#.

Overall, Visual Studio .NET is a radical break from the past for Microsoft. C# is an entirely new language, aimed at C and C++ programmers looking for something safer and more productive. Visual Basic .NET is a new twist on the old Microsoft favorite, losing compatibility with earlier versions, but gaining full object orientation as well as access to all the .NET libraries. These two languages, along with J#, have full support for the visual design tools in Visual Studio .NET. Also included is JScript .NET, Microsoft's version of JavaScript, although this comes without a form designer. Visual C++ is similar to earlier versions and is the only compiler included that can build old-style Windows executables. With a compiler switch, it can also target .NET, making it particularly flexible.

Visual Studio .NET has two distinct form designers. Windows Forms are for traditional Windows applications, but managed by the common runtime. Web Forms are ASP.NET pages, which means they run on Web servers and work over the Internet. Microsoft has made designing and coding Windows Forms and Web Forms as similar as possible so that both types of applications can share components and much of the complexity of coding Web applications is kept hidden. Another key feature is Web services, which lets developers create an XML interface for an application so that it can be called across the Web or from any platform or language. XML support generally is strong, with a range of classes for parsing and transforming XML data. There is also a visual designer for XML Schema.

There are a few points against Visual Studio .NET. One is that, like earlier versions, it only creates applications that run on Windows. Web applications are a partial exception, in that they support cross-platform clients, but deployment requires a Windows Web server. Another factor is that, with its multiple compilers and mountains of documentation, Visual Studio .NET eats up gigabytes of disk space, and the IDE tends to be slow with less than around 384 MB RAM. Serious developers will take this in stride, but casual users could have difficulty. Fortunately, the applications created have more modest system requirements, although Windows 95 is not supported. Finally, developers coming from earlier editions face a lot of learning due to radical changes in both Visual Basic and ASP.

Despite these minor issues and a steep learning curve, Visual Studio .NET is an extremely versatile, sophisticated, and capable development tool. --Tim Anderson, ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Great Leap Forward
My apologies to Chairman Mao, but I've been using the beta version of VS.Net for several weeks now, and its advances are impressive. For VB programmers, there is a new, fully object-oriented version of the language that stands on an equal footing with C. For C++ programmers, there is C#, which combines the power of C with the RAD features of VB. It really is possible to knock out a Windows application in a morning! Finally, for Java programmers who are a bit frustrated with the quirks of that language, C# is a Java clone that is easy to learn, that has most of the power that Java left out, and that has a really spectacular IDE. I haven't raved about anything since VB3, but I'm raving about this.

4-0 out of 5 stars .NET - .GET
This studio is leagues beyond the last. Microsoft is easing the burden of developers by simplifying distributed application development using .NET. Sure, for instance, you can go in and manually write the low level COM interface connectors if you prefer to have the "stick shift" control and specific performance attributes etc., or you can rely on the built in functionality of .NET and speed the development process.

It seems that with this platform there is a bit of a learning curve even for the most experienced developers because of the great differences. But the online help is dynamic and useful when you get stuck on something.

Visual Basic is not Visual Basic now. They seemed to have completely renovated the way VB works.

The Common language Runtime (CLR) makes it possible to create solutions by interweaving any of the languages included with the studio. I believe there is a way to import 3rd party or future MS designed languages as well. So if one language is better at a specific task, then you can switch to it.

The integrated development environment (IDE) is meant to maximize developer productivity. In using it, I haven't experienced the contrary. I must mention that I do like the flexibility of working on web applications in .NET. You can use a grid layout like a form builder, or the flow layout like a web page editor.

I noticed a couple of funny things so far, but not worth mentioning. It takes some getting used to, but this is certainly worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally... a real IDE for Web developers!
Been using VS.NET since beta 2, and the final version is everything I've ever wanted. I was a former ASP script kiddie, but because of the outstanding object-oriented VB.NET, and even better C#, I can now code Web apps like a "real" developer. I can see Windows programmers asking, "Wait, you mean it wasn't always done that way?"

There are some minor annoyances, like the fact that VS.NET won't use Intellisense when you write code right on an ASP.NET page (come on MS, a code-behind file isn't necessary for three lines of code). It's also not terribly idiot-proof setting up remote debugging.

The greatest thing to me is that SQL Server's Enterprise manager is, in a matter of speaking, integrated into the environment, so you're not alt-tabing to see what the heck your DB looks like.

If you hate the state of Web development, you need this.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST IDE Out There
Absolutely fantastic - best programming experience out of anything else I've used. Surely beats the pants of any java IDE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pure C/C++ programmers will see a mediocre improvement
If you do pure C/C++ programming without COM, VB or C#, you won't see much of an improvement. Code profiling for performance measurements is gone, which was available in MSVC 6 (Microsoft Visual C++ 6). So if you get this software, you should get something like Rational Quantify for performance testing.

C# and .NET are the biggest additions to this environment over previous versions.

Our development environment went through a few upgrade pains. The VS .NET 2003 version fixed many usability problems found in VS .NET 2002. The UI is much better than MSVC 6.0. As with most compiler upgrades, certain C/C++ language features changed, which took us a little time to resolve (e.g. , __FILE__ and a few other things). I recommend a phase in approach when migrating to this new environment. Don't jump into this environment.

If you want to do real C/C++ programming, you need at least the professional edition. The Visual C++ .NET 2003 Standard edition doesn't do optimization, but the professional environment does do optimization. Sadly, you can't get just the C/C++ compiler. Fortunately, there are more optimization options in this compiler, and it has buffer security checks, which I have found useful a couple of times.

The HTML editor doesn't create 100% valid strict HTML 4.01, but it's a better HTML editor than MSVC 6. It also makes it easier to edit basic CSS.

I haven't used all of the nifty features of this environment, but it's a decent improvement over MSVC 6. It's way better than MetroWerks CodeWarrior 5, at least with regards to price (current CodeWarrior version is 8.0, but 5.0 had some stability issues when I used it). I can't compare it very well to Eclipse, since I haven't used it that often (I like Eclipse, which is freely available at CygWin is a little difficult to use at times, but the price is right (free).

Overall I recommend Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 Professional. If you're a casual C/C++ programmer, look elsewhere. This will probably be too pricey for you. If you're a professional programmer, you should consider getting this software. If you're a professional Windows programmer, you need this software because this is the future of Windows programming. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Neutral
If you plan on getting this program go to and get a free C++ compiler. Use it to compile DLL files for your games. Not being able to compile with Visual C++ that comes on the CD really makes hard to create you're own effects for games. Learn C++, download the free compiler and learn how to use the free compiler. Not all code will work automatically with Dev-C++ so you need to find you're own work arounds. It comes with the lates compiler which I think is GCC 3.6 (see gcc's website).

2-0 out of 5 stars ok for someone just getting into game design
this is an ok set for people looking to get into game design. you can get the book at your bookstore, and that's really the only thing worth anything in the box, and it's not even that great: just a bunch of anecdotes and short interview sections from some noteworthy people in the field. there's not really much time in any section to go in-depth, and the same is true with the software included. you can't save, or in the case of the visual C++ kit, you can't compile, which means you can write your code and just look at it.
my recomendation is this: if you want to program, get as much math as possible, way beyond calculus 3 (quaternion, non-linear, and matrix algebra are just some of the subjects you'll need), and get lots of good experience in C++, and a degree is the best way to go. if you want to go the art side, draw, draw, draw. go to an art school, and get a degree in the field. the Art Institutes, Savannah College of Art and Design and DigiPen Institute of Technology are just some of the noteworthy schools.
whatever you do, 4 year degrees are better than 2, and make sure it's accredited.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Computer Training Course
I purchased "Professor Teaches How To Create Web Pages" and loaded the CD's onto my harddrive and it worked great. The courses are informative and have good graphics. The full course of 10 Tutorials takes weeks to get through. Plenty of good information to help anyone get a good start at making web pages. Highly recommended!

1-0 out of 5 stars Professor Teaches How To Create Web Pages
Don't waste your money!!! After downloading this program onto my computer I was unable to open it. I contacted tech support who had me remove the program from my computer and go through various clean up procedures on my computer before redownloading it with no improvement. Second call I was requested to do a similar procedure, again, no luck. (I have had no problems with any other software, ever!). I placed 3 requests for help via their e-mail tech support, only received one reply for more information, which I supplied, never got an answer. Finally via telephone tech support admitted that this was a common problem and that they were working on a patch, just give them a few days. Well, after checking by phone several times as well as checking their web site, it has been over one month and still no patch!!! I was told by Individual Software that this software was not returnable but that I could exchange it for other software. Problem is, I don't need any other software, and certainly wouldn't want any from this company! One other thing, tech support works banker's hours so don't bother calling evenings, nights or weekends! The only thing this software is good for is as a set of ugly coasters! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Program, BAD INSTALLATION by flawed design.
~A) Software does not self-install -- no matter what you do(any kind of prayer beads don't even help!!!...I tried them all...)
~B) Customer service's automatic system gets back to you with info sooner than a warm body one does.
~C) I figured out the solution all by my lil ole self, and I am not even paid to do it!!!!!

___Listen, children, and you shall hear of
___yet another nightmare installing software...

Even my hubby who is technical support customer service guru, didn't get it figured out. But in defense of all those desktop jockeys -- they have so much information to remember that the basics are soon forgotten. ~~~So, here's a toast for all the softaware customer people in the trenches of day-to-day frustration, feeling unappreciated, and kicked like the dog. **Cheers!! [:]P ** "Thanks for all of the effort and attempts to help us non-technical users. And please try not to talk down to us so much and we will try to remember that you are only human as well."~~~

Simply put, use your computer to install it by -->

1.)Control Panel, select "Add/Remove Software" then,
2.)Select the "Add New Software", and finally
3.)The computer will do the rest and even come running back, wagging its tail, to that same installation screen to load all of the rest of the CDs for you too - what a dear thing it can be -- except when you are PULLING YOUR HAIR OUT over it!!!!

Happy software trails to all,
from The Lady Scorpio.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Training Opportunity!
My experience with "Professor Teaches.." was benefical and hassle-free. I was and am (I am still working my way through the tutorials) quite satisfied with the self-paced process of learning not only the basics of Microsoft Office components, but also aspects of their functioning I had little or no knowledge of. One CD is devoted to each component aspect of Microsoft Office. You can stop and start the session at will and when you begin agian you are at the point you just left off.

The information is presented in a straight fowrard, easy-to-comprehend manner. The interactive nature of this product allows the student to perform tasks associated with each topic.
I took the opportunity to take detailed notes as I went through each exercise, givng me a quick reference quick to use once I completed each lesson- so far I have completed the Microsoft Word and Outlook modules and am one-third of the way through the Excel module.

The only draw-back I experienced this product is that it worked best when installed as a program rather than used as a CD.

Also I think the edition I purchased had a lot of stuff I didn't really need like Office ME and 2000. Now I need to get the set with Frontpage and the other Web design programs.

Again, I found this product to be extremely satisfactory. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep it simple by buying the best
Borland C++ builder, makes coding easy.
Let me explain. You have a simple console program. You have transferred your concept from paper to a program. The C++ Buider has console project that you can create, to slot your .cpp file in, and then compile. Easy!
But you ask: 'What if I want to create a GUI that goes with the program?
Choosing a project with SDI (Single document Interface) or MDI (Multiple document interface) does not cause your simple concept in the .cpp program to get lost in all that code that was generated in creating that GUI, which can work as a MFC (Microsoft Foundation Class) Project. (Again a project type within Borland C++ Builder sets that up).
The GUI in the SDI or MDI package is pre-build, and shows only the code that will modify the way the software you develop behaves and runs, and avoids showing all the internal files, if you are happy with them as they are. This means that you only have to debug your own code and the limited amount of code you modified !
Where can I go with Borland C++ Builder as supposed to Visual Basic. NET or Visual C++ .Net ?
Borland C++ Builder combines the user friendliness of Visual Basic.Net with the power of Visual C++ .Net language. Like in Visual Basic.Net WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get), but C++ gives you the scope to make programs in the oldest and main developer language around. C++ builder also opens up the scope of creating applications in C++ that are not platform dependant, with the additional feature of making C applications, .dll files and Database driven applications, without generating much code to begin with. Happy Programming !
In addition Borland C++ Builder can be linked together with another persons C++ builder license and the program can be pooled and simultaneously debugged, compared to say Visual .Net packages, giving you a faster time to market, and makes it far easier to work to some sort of deadline.
Borland C++ Builder has stood the test of time. Its GUI's are fully integrated with any windows Operating System while it connects to all major Data vendors such as Oracle, Sql Server, MS Access, Informix, Sybase etc... .
If you are not short of resources, you can upgrade to an Enterprise Version of C++ Builder, which allows you to jump between Borland C++ Builder and Visual C++, (a more integrated approach to Windows Programming). ... Read more
