3-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth The Price of Update
I have used Quicken for about 6 years now and love most of the program. However, the 2003 version is no improvement over 2002. The didn't fix many of the bugs and added a few new one. For example, you still can't edit your ESOP transaction once you enter them. One of the new bug is you can't resize the search results window. Also, Quicken has gone way overboard with advertising. The software in now basically ad-ware, which would be ok if they didn't sell it to you. Finally, the business functions are so cripple they're almost useless. You can't even chose the columns or entries on invoices.

1-0 out of 5 stars D**ned if you do...
Although all the previous reviews I've read about Quicken 2003 have been right on the money about this version of the program, no one has offered any solutions! After lots of research, I was able to get q03 to print from windows xp - open the printers folder, highlight your printer, right click and click on properties, click on the "advanced" tab on the top, click on "print processor", choose "winprint" and "raw" and click ok until everything is closed. Doing this enabled me to finally print reports and statements. Hope it works for you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Buggy Quicken 2003
I've used various versions of Quicken for well over ten years, upgrading just about every year. Quicken 2003 is a huge dissapointment. I download transactions from my financial institutions and then reconcile the online balances. For some inexplicable reason I periodically get the error message "The total of the previously cleared items in your register no longer matches with the ending balance of your prior statements." I very much suspect that Quicken 2003 has a bug in its reconciliation module and that this problem is not due to operator stupidity, as I never had this problem with past versions of the software. Technical support for the product is miserable.

1-0 out of 5 stars Got XP? Forget Quicken 2003!
If you're running Windows XP, Quicken 2003 isn't for you. Yes, the interface has grown clunky -- the mark of software that's piled on so many bells and whistles that it's become morbidly obese. But what good is any financial software if you can't print reports? With XP, you cannot. Quicken 2003 simply crashes and closes when you hit the print command.

"Windows XP is bad at processing 16-bit printing," a Quicken service rep told me today. His advice? Remove the latest and greatest HP printer drivers and install drivers for Windows 98. Of course, full-featured printing will suffer with most every other application on my computer, and XP poses serious obstacles to such a ploy since Win98 drivers are not certified for XP, but Intuit offers no other solution.

When I pointed out that I run a lot programs and that only Quicken won't print in XP, my exasperated tech rep sighed, "I know, I hear that a lot." Publicly, Intuit is clearly in denial. There's not a clue about XP printing problems to be found on Quicken's support site.

It's sad, really. Intuit once brought personal and business accounting into its full glory on the PC platform, but they've stumbled and fallen flat today. ...Unless you're one of the few still running Windows 98, forget this retro dinosaur.

1-0 out of 5 stars Trust me: Don't buy it! Don't install it! Don┬┐t use it!
I have been with Quicken since 3.0. I have loved the software and have been a strong advocate for it. Now that I have upgraded to Quicken Premier 2003, my attitude has complete changed. I have never seen such terribly written software before. This is purely pitiful.

I have recently upgraded from Quicken 2000 Deluxe and I have had nothing but trouble. First of all, of course, it couldn't convert my old data file. I had a ton of errors to sort through. Secondly, the interface constantly locks up on me (I am using XP). Thirdly, the interface is so obscure, you will find yourself running in circles just trying to accomplish what used to take minutes. The help is pitiful. The support is even worse. The interface is absolutely retched, extremely slow (I am running at 1.3 GHz) and riddled with bugs. Intuit is no longer interested in making good software.

I hate to sound so negative. I am not one who complains so much, but this software is more than a disappointment, it has been a complete waste of my time. Trust me, don't buy it, don't install it, and don't use it. You will be very sorry. Even if you are given it for fee. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

With checkbooks going the way of the fax machine, money-management programs are becoming an increasingly popular addition to personal software collections. Whether you're creating a monthly budget or planning a complex investment portfolio, Microsoft Money 2002 Deluxe offers a compelling solution for everyone from stockbrokers to soccer moms.

The first thing we noticed after launching Money 2002 Deluxe was how happy everyone in Microsoft land seemed. Images of beautiful people sitting around in loungewear floated across our screen, beckoning us to join the ranks of content Money users. Happily, we complied and began entering our personal finance information, including bank accounts, credit cards, monthly expenses, etc. While the setup wizard made getting started extremely easy, take note that many features require users to have a Microsoft Passport account. Without this account number, users are unable to access some of the cooler Web features available in Money 2002. Disabling this feature is complicated, and ignoring it is virtually impossible as you are constantly being asked to sign in to Passport.

That said, many of the new features that make Money a worthwhile upgrade revolve around better Web integration and online services. The new MoneySide bar follows you around as you surf the Web, providing you with access to your financial data as you shop, invest, or pay bills. You can also synchronize your Money data with MSN Money, which allows for up-to-date investing, banking, and financial planning information. Other improvements show up in the areas of report and chart creation, as well as the ability to send these reports via e-mail. Finally, a new Bill Setup and Edit feature offers a central location for tracking your bills and making electronic payments.

One of the great things about Money 2002 Deluxe is that you can use it as much or as little as you like. For example, if you just want to see how much a vacation will affect your monthly budget, the program offers a one-time expense feature to use during that month. If, on the other hand, you'd rather create a six-month plan to purchase a new SUV, Money 2002 will help you set up a budget to account for this expense over time.

Overall, Money 2002 Deluxe is a strong and dependable tool for managing your money, which can only lead to financial gains. --Gisele Toueg ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product for Personal Finances
I purchased Money 2002 Deluxe as an upgrade to the existing version I was using - Money 2001 Deluxe. The features in the 2002 version that was most helpful to me includes:
1. Being able to undo an action (e.g. especially for those times when you delete a transaction in error)
2. Having more printing options, especially in the "forecast" cash flow section. I've always found the older version had limited printing capabilities.
3. Being able to flag transactions for later follow-up or making notes, similar to to-do action items.
4. The home page is more customizable, so I could "see" at a glance my spending habits, to-do actions, cash flow, etc.
5. The Bills and Deposits section is much more improved - though it takes a bit of getting used to in the beginning.

The feature I didn't like is Microsoft integrating the money file with a Passport account. While it adds another level of security, i.e. having a password to access the money file, I think it is just Microsoft's way of pushing their Passport technology. Fortunately, Money can be used offline - so it's neither here nor there regarding the passport option. All in all, I think it's a great product.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Software I Own
I just balanced my checking account in 3 minutes so I felt compelled to put up a review proclaiming how great MS Money is.

First off, I was shocked to see that the overall rating for Money is so low. I tried to use Quicken Deluxe 2001 a while back and aside from hating the UI I just never felt that it worked very well. Things like balancing my account and paying bills online were awkward and I eventually gave up.

Money, on the other hand, has a beautiful, intuitive UI, makes balancing my accounts simple and sometimes automatic, and provides incredibly smooth online integration. The epay feature lets me pay all of my bills through money and they automatically get entered into my credit union's online bill pay system. Anytime something goes wrong, for example if I enter a date that's too early or if I haven't entered an address to send the bill, Money handles it smoothly.

I should note that my experience with MS Money is limited to entering and categorizing all of my transactions, electronic bill pay, and balancing my accounts so I can't comment on any of the reporting or budgeting features.

I noticed that a few of the negative reviews are from people that say they have a hard time managing their finances and it's not surprising these people would be let down. Money can't do everything for you and I spend a significant amount of time making sure everything is kept up to date. However, if you are willing to invest time to track your finances Money is definitely an application you should consider.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worse than you think
Being a MS Money user for the last seven years, I thought that the new version will improve my ability to track my personal finances, just as the previous versions did. Instead, I had to cope with the disappearance of my budget and, worst of all, an annoying Passport log in, which seems to have a serious security issue. Two days after installation and the first Passport log-in, I had two on-line charges on a credit card I've never used on the Internet!!!

Fortunately, I found my Money 2000 file backed up and restored normality by removing this threat from my system.

2-0 out of 5 stars More bugs than Windows XP.
Bought this when it first came out to replace Quicken (too slow).
More fool me - ghastly interface. More bugs than an ant hill and now it won't let me edit or view downloaded info and I've now got 78 items on one account needing 'previewing'.

I'd move the file back to Quicken but guess MS Money has now ballsed up my accounts so badly I'd be better off starting again.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
The only major thing I learned about money from Money 2002 Deluxe is that buying it is a waste of money. It is user unfriendly, has a confusing layout and the "automatic" retrieval of information from the internet worked for less than half the accounts I put in the software.
Another "fun" thing was that the first time I set up all my accounts, budget etc., the Money file was saved to a folder on the LAN network - even though I was not connected to it at the time. I should have realized this, of course, but I didn't. Next time I tried to access the file it was not found, neither on the network, nor on the hard drive.
Money 2002 Deluxe is good for two things:
Cardio exercise - because it will definitely raise your blood pressure and heart rate whenever you use it, and
It will make your wallet a lighter and more comfortable fit in your pocket.. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Functional - Do not be fooled by other reviews
I recently purchased a new iMac (made the switch from PC) and was distraught I would no longer be able to use Microsoft Money. I've been using it since 2000 and have had nothing but sucess.

After reading the mainly negative reviews ...my first inclination was to go out and buy a new program (Moneydance, Quicken 2003, or Virtual PC to continue using Money) to handle my finances. Since Quicken 2002 Deluxe came pre-installed on my iMac, I decided to give it a try.

I am pleasantly suprised at its capabilities. It is not quite as intuitive as I would like but I think that has something to do with the layers and layers of options Intuit has built into this program. The ability to handle several bank accounts, credit card accounts, investment accounts, retirement accounts, loans, assets and liabilities is all there. There are built in reports to view various categories or view your entire portfolio of accounts at once.

In response to some other reviews let me address some of their comments:

1) In order for Quicken to download statements automatically you must do two things. One - activate the account you have created in Quicken to access information online. Two - contact your bank and have them set up your account for this purpose. It is at this time they will give you a PIN to use. One reviewer mentioned they tried every PIN # they had to no avail. That is correct - your bank gives you a special one to use for Quicken downloads. Another option - if that is too much of a hassle - is to log onto your bank's website and export history using Quicken Web-Download. Either way same end result - one method is set up once and activated by clicking one button. The other way involves a couple of steps each time.

2) Dates all default to 2020 and cannot be changes was another reviewer's comments. This happened to me once. The system defaulted to 2020 when I tried entering a date. After I recorded it, I went back and edited the date to 2002. A one time pain in my experience as it now defaults to 2002.

Overall this program is adequate to manage your personal finances. It has several useful reporting and reconciling features and does allow internet banking downloads. So why not five stars? The graphics / presentation / layout leave a lot to be desired. If you are using OS X, Quicken is a huge disappointment compared to other programs. Another reason for losing a star is that this program is not intuitive and requires research to get tasks done; the PDF version of the manual is over 400 pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am addicted to Quicken
I have been using Quicken since it's early DOS versions. In my humble opinion, there is simply no better way to organize all of your finances. Most banks and credit card companies will allow you to download transactions directly into Quicken (no file download from the institution's web site, and then import into Quicken) -- I'm talking about knowing your recent credit card transactions within a day or two (in case you are not the type to enter them in right when you get home). Manage all your brokerage accounts, 401k, IRA, track your mortgage, car payment, etc. It is all there, and come tax time - you will be sitting pretty when you need to import your neatly categorized Quicken transactions into TurboTax or TaxCut.

You will not be disappointed, I highly recommend Quicken 2002 Deluxe or Suite.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Product Ended Up Costing More
Product was not full version as implied. In order to use it I had to call company and pay more money. Would never buy from here again.

2-0 out of 5 stars Umm ... it doesn't crash often.
I was a big fan of Quicken 5 years ago, but this version is abysmal. Features that are advertised on the box, but "discontinued", a user interface that takes some time to get used to, and a serious bug that I can't get anyone at Quicken to respond to. I created a 401k account, added two mutual funds, gave them both initial balances, then corrected the balances when I found my account information. The problem is that the updated amounts are correct in the register, but are not correct in any other reports. I can't get it to refresh the data in the reports without deleting the account. I give up. Going to try to find a copy of Quicken from the mid 90's.

1-0 out of 5 stars Glad they stopped selling it
Do not pay for this. This came preinstalled on my eMac. What a waste! It often quits unexpectedly! I was using Quicken Deluxe 99 on Windows 95 and I never had so many problems as I do with this version. The layout is unintuitive, and nearly unusable. It spawns a new window for every account. There is just so much that I can't do in this version that I could on the Windows version. Customization is one. Another is that the reports are limited to 64 columns, I had hundreds of columns QD99 under Win95. I could understand if the current Windows version had extra features but this is 4 years later! How Intuit could release such rubbish baffles me. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory C-Dilla malware/spyware. You don't want this.
Here's a quote from extremetech.com. (ExtremeTech &sister publication PC Magazine're industry leaders. You've probably heard of their most famous writer, John C. Dvorak.) (Note:Intuit-TurboTax-2002's C-Dilla wasn't different from other versions of C-Dilla. It just got lotsa attention because TurboTax *was* very popular software until C-Dilla became a part of it.)

From ET's article:
"Likely the biggest problem users have expressed, is the level at which the TurboTax licensing agreement is managed and protected with the SafeCast/C-Dilla technology. People believe C-Dilla infiltrates their system in a very insidious manner, and uses memory and resources even when TurboTax is not loaded. And some believe it has caused them serious compatibility problems with non-related CD writing operations. (PC Magazine and ExtremeTech will be conducting some tests next week to see if we can duplicate some of these problems). [....] or your customers still looking to exit TurboTax for good, the uninstaller at this link now fully removes components of SafeCast/C-Dilla that were previously mostly impossible to remove."

... If you're planning on using this product at work, forget it... your Info Technology manager will have a cow if he/she knows that you're installing destructive trojan/spyware (C-Dilla) on the company PCs. If you've already installed this software on a PC at work, let your IT manager know IMMEDIATELY, so he/she can take whatever steps are possible to remove C-Dilla.

In the 2002/2003 version of TurboTax, a great protest rose up from prominent computer-industry magazines and users, which led to Intuit/TurboTax somewhat apologizing, and offering a program that uninstalled C-Dilla after you'd uninstalled TurboTax2002. (The original uninstaller didn't remove C-Dilla.)

2004...does it have C-Dilla ? I don't know. It's not out yet. Approach with caution.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible, unworkable program-AVOID
If you want MORE STRESS with your tax preparation, just try using this worthless program.

Last year I tried to download Turbo Tax for California and the program just wouldn't run correctly so this year I bought the CD. It doesn't work either and Intuit's "help" is worthless. The state program refuses to import some of the data from the federal program, and won't let me input the data either. So Turbo Tax keeps telling me I owe money when in fact the state owes me a refund. This is after I had to, once again, download interminable files because the state edition was released before it was ready.

I will avoid this product in the future. It's a waste of time and money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Program works OK - but the hassle level is VERY high
First off, the program does what it needs to do - pulling in your federal tax info and completing your state taxes.

But the inconvenience level is high:

1> Product activation - it's not hard to do, but if you wind up buying a new computer/rebuilding your current computer and then having to refile taxes, you'll be stuck dealing with unhelpful Intuit employees who will want you to buy the product again.

2> Lots of updates required and the update download process is unreliable - took several tries to finally get all the downloads. I think it was 40+ files.

3> The big hassle of the rebates - I was pleasantly surprised to see that you could do the rebate online. But it turns out that it just prints a cover page (with a bar code, so it saves Intuit the work of entering your information). You still have to send everything in plus the cover page - you even have to fill out the regular rebate form, even though you just filled out everything online.

I've been a TurboTax user for the past 5 years, but I definitely will try another product for 2003.

4-0 out of 5 stars seamless interface with federal TurboTax
I found the TurboTax Premier worked well, and this state software was a seamless interface. I was not sure if I should install the State software before entering all my federal data, or afterward. I installed the TurboTax Premier (federal) software first, then installed the CA state software, then entered all the data following the interview method. Then both federal and state forms print out at the end (or e-file). Easy to use, and I expect to use it again next year.

1-0 out of 5 stars terrible
have to jump through rebates to obtain state product with deluxe. deluxe did not have necc coupon and had to waste 2 hours to finally talk to a person to figure out what to do next. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Rotten software, worse support
There's bad software, awful software, and "aw just stick a fork in me" rotten software. "Mycheck Writer..." by Elibrium falls under the third category.

Installation is painful. Operation gives repeated "...dll failed" errors. Installs a very fussy printer driver called "greatland" (from another company with competing check printing software), which will fail suddenly. Installation also places hundreds of awful fonts in your windows fonts directory, which are not removed through the uninstall process.

After painfully getting an install completed on my laptop in Aug '03, I was able to print using my inkjet for a few months. (No, you don't really need a laser printer and the MICR toner cartridge that they try to sell you. At least I didn't. Banks and businesses had no problems with my inkjet printed checks.)

Then out of the blue, it starts printing my checks without the routing/transit/account number line. Of course, after a few months of use with only limited trouble, I didn't notice. (My awful mistake, of course.) Suddenly, my checks are being returned to me with comments like "The document enclosed is not a legal banking instrument". Great.

I try re-printing the checks, but now the "greatland printer driver" is giving me errors to the effect of "print command received from illegal application. Contact technical support"

I'm on the horn with my bank now to get some regular checks printed. There's no way I'm going to waste my $24 or more on their technical support.

Good luck folks! If you find a simple check printing interface, please post!

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT RECOMMENDED It worked okay then.........
Was working fine with my HP laser and XP, simple record keeping. Then the darn thing started printing checks from 2 months ago instead of the one I wanted to print. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PROGRAM TO ANYONE. I had to go back and make sure the right check numbers were with the right checks because it was also changing check numbers on me. Tech supoort for $24.95, + per minute fees. Now that takes guts especially on a product that is only 3 months old. Shop around, trust me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't try to use this product with a 300 dpi laser printer..
It won't support lasers less than 600 dpi. No were is this disclosed. Didn't find out until I purchased an $80 MICR toner for my printer. Wow! I could have bought 6 boxs of check for the price of the MICR toner alone. Waste of money!

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't print in W2K. Lousy tech support
I bought it for win2000. Their print driver doesn't work - doesn't print at all. The company acknowledges the problem on the their web site and gives a "wonderful" recommendation: "Cancel all printing jobs and try again"!...? Their live tech support is [expensive] plus per minute charges. Email support answered in 24 hours and even offered call me. The guy was nice but his advise absolutely useless. After going through the routine of checking my printer's settings he sent a word file with 18 steps instructions. ... The file tells you how to uninstall and, then, reinstall the software. What a brilliant solution!... When I told them that it still didn't work, they sent an email saying, basically, that they know about the problem and have no idea what the hell is going on. Would never buy anything from this company and, hope, neither will you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Can't get Support for issues
Had problems getting the CheckDesigner to print checks properly, the check on the screen looks nothing like what comes out of the printer. Basically useless.
I use Quicken and Quickbooks, but now the checks come out fuzzy. There is a driver that MyChecks installs that intercepts the print job (Greatland Driver), and now only 1 in 3 checks prints correctly. That's not saving any money - wasting a lot of paper. I guess they think they can keep you buying their check paper because the software works so bad. A bit slimey don't you think? ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars QuickBooks Pro - Quick to end support.
QuickBooks 2001 is no longer supported. I assume that Intuit will drop support at the rate of one edition per year. It is more like leasing the software for 3 years, not buying it. Even the extra cost features became unusable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Use, NOT Easy to Set Up>from the QuickBooks Guru
People that are disappointed with the software usually have tried to set this up themselves without help. I have been a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor since inception of the program, and my MAIN job is FIRST to set up the program correctly. Once it is set up, it is easy to train most anyone to use most of the functions, especially in the 2002 Version.

Intuit Customer Service is minimal at best, I agree---but that is why you should call a CERTIFIED advisor in your area (but with the QB remote access, ANYplace is adaptable now) with an accounting background. It will save you time, and aggravation !

I have used every other accounting software package out there, and I really just recommend QBooks for most businesses. It's functionality, ease of use and reporting functions are GREAT!. I have all my clients up and running with deposits, checks, invoices, emailing statements, job profitabilities etc etc.within 2 hours WHEN it's been set up properly !

I have taken many clients off other software out there in the market that has cost them many lost hours, wasted money and MUCH frustration. Intuit has raised their prices, I agree---(something I am NEVER fond of) BUT it's STILL a big Bang for the Buck ...from someone that KNOWS the product very very well!

1-0 out of 5 stars Intuit needs to wake up!
Quickbooks seems to be very limited, 5 concurrent user limit regardless of how many copies you buy.

During the period of time I've tried to contact them through their E-commerce site, I have discovered that they have absolutely insulated themselves from the public... not a good sign.

The QB software can't be downloaded even from the Intuit site, yet requires post installation activation. In other words you have to wait till they get around to sending the CD to you, and then after getting it loaded you have to ask them for permission to use it. Upgrade your hardware and you could end up jumping through hoops of fire in order to get it working again.

After spending several hours over two days trying to access their E-commerce site, which cannot be accessed unless you set up your own system security to basically drop its trousers, I have come to the conclusion that Intuit is poorly equipped to service the business management and accounting needs of other companies if they manage their own site security, marketing and PR so poorly.

After all of this, they were unable to find my order to cancel it.

Do you want your small business accounting software to be writen by a company that can't find it long enough to pull it's thumb out?

I will not buy Intuit software again until such time as they return to the practices that built their reputation.
Customer support and access
Precise and accurate internal management of their company.
Proper E-commerce website security

1-0 out of 5 stars Forget about it!
Intuit: one of the worst customer service companies on the planet. I have had serious problems with my tech support plan, which I paid a lot of money for, over the past 6 months. It took hours of phone calls over months to finally get someone to do something. You know what they did after all that? Gave me one month of tech support for free! How wonderful! What an insult! 6 months of down time on their eSupport, I have purchased their products every year for 15 years, I spent endless hours trying to get this resolved, and they give me 1 month!

Also, when they say that with the Premier tech support plan that they GUARANTEE that you won't be on hold for more than 10 minutes, I was on hold for 45 minutes and finally had to hang up. I never did reach a tech support person. When I talked to them about it later, you know what I found out? "Guarantee" means nothing whatsoever. They wouldn't do anything for me.

So do I think you should buy this product? Not on your life! Seek a software company that cares at least a little bit about the people who are keeping them in business (their customers). ... Read more
