Microsoft Money has helped individuals organize and streamline their financial dealings for a half-decade. The latest iteration, Money 2003, may be the most impressive upgrade in some time, with several new amenities designed to make your personal status even clearer, and your decisions and future planning even easier.

Before you invest in Microsoft Money 2003 Deluxe, you should ask yourself if you really need it. If you're fortunate enough to have a simple financial environment with few delinquent payments, and if you've already arranged a comprehensive investment and online banking routine, you may find it redundant and superfluous. However, if you're constantly asking yourself where your latest paycheck went or simply don't know how to best make your money work for you, the program may well seem indispensable.

Sporting a wealth of online and offline tools, numerous instructional videos, and a series of supportive verbal prompts, Money 2003 is much more than just a simple debt and asset tracker. After a little familiarization and an hour or two with its excellent Setup Assistant, you'll soon be banking and paying bills from one convenient online interface, initiating and managing your investments, intelligently forecasting future expenditures and savings, and accurately estimating your taxes. The 2003 edition also allows you to research investments, initiate stock reminders and alerts, track equity and index options, and even customize interfaces.

Furthermore, Money 2003 Deluxe features several intriguing additional perks not found in the Standard edition. Microsoft has also included one year of complimentary online bill payments through MSN, a variety of sophisticated portfolio management and tax tools, and much more. Potential customers should be advised that many of the program's services are functional only if you have an Internet connection and a Microsoft Passport. Fortunately, the latter is free of charge.

Microsoft Money 2003 is a broad offline and online financial planner and record-keeper that will make quick work of any and all budgetary issues. Its slick presentation may even make the usually laborious job of managing personal finances downright enjoyable. --Gordon Goble ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a good product
I upgraded from Money 2001 and this really worth the change. Now your accounts are in a more intelligent interface and you can see quickly your last puts.
The investment section is also the best part. Now you can arrange many details and see exactly what do you want from your stocks and investments. The only deception is that it's too slow to download quotes and sometimes the software gets halted.
The planner are a little simple and need a little customization but in general they are good and useful.
If you need to have control of your money, to see how you owe, what you have and how does the flow of your money goes you must try a financial software and Money is a good shot.
If you are happy with Money 2002, don't upgrade. And if you are with Quicken 2003, stay where you are.

4-0 out of 5 stars A wise solution for budgetting!
To be honest I spend money as I look at it, but MS Money takes care of that. A wonderful solution that provides informative tutorials on how to budget ones self more efficiently. Money has evolved over the years into an enormous resource for helping users get their financial investments together. The application is becoming more and more integrated allowing users to take care of such task as paying bills online, buying a car, house or any other type of household activity concerning how you spend money. It organises the users investments. It's also a wonderful budgetting tool, comparing itself to Quicken. But the thing about Money 2003, is the interface, it's more pleasing to look at and based on my observation more easier to use based on it's intuitive wizards. I really recommend you purchase money if you don't have it. I implore users. If you are a Quicken user, stick with it, I think Quicken is more powerful than Money regardless of the many bells and whistles it has. If you are new to the budgetting software I try Money because of the ease of use, but for long time Quicken users stick with what you use to.
Should you upgrade?
If you recently spent money buying Money 2002, don't worry to upgrade to it yet, wait six month's to a year, their is really no reason to rush but if you are still using a previous version of Money prior to version 2002 it's a worthy upgrade. For version 2002 users the reason why I don't recommend you upgrade is because of Microsoft's unpredictable upgrade cycle just as you might purchase this new version of Money, news about Money 2004 start's circulating, I don't want you to make any mistakes wasting your money, here.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot of harsh reviews for a great product
I've been using Microsoft Money 2002 for quite awhile and I really liked it. I decided to upgrade to Money 2003 and its even better. If you're wondering what Money can do for you, let me tell you. It can automatically download your transactions from your bank and credit cards so you can easily reconcile your accounts. When your bank (like mine, BofA) won't let Money auto-download it offers a manual download that works the same. Money can help you create budgets where you can easily track expenses. It can help you create a debt reduction plan so you know exactly how much you need to send in order to get out of debt by a certain date. You can keep track of all upcoming bills. I'm not sure I could live without it now that I've used it for so long.

2-0 out of 5 stars Online quotes just stopped working
After using Money 2003 for a year the online stock quote update function just stopped working. No warnings, no message, no nothing. After searching the web and reading the fine print I discovered that it will stop working 1 year from the date of registration or first use. Typical MS tactics. I am going to pick up a copy of Quicken.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful software, has its downsides.
After using Money for some years (previously Money 99 FS) upgraded to 2003 Deluxe. It would not read my previous money file saying it was corrupted. After countless hours with support (they did continuously keep me updated) they said the upgrade was not supported. They even looked at my 99 file and couldnt find a reason why it wouldn't read in 2003. Anyways, I did the upgrade the hard way - export/import. Currently everything seems to work good.

One botheration which another reviewer pointed out is that the shares purchased should be rounded to 3 decimal places instead of six. It always messes up the sale if you have partial purchases like DRIP etc. ... Read more

Every detail in the new tax laws is included in the program, so users have the opportunity to receive every new tax break to which they are entitled. The program asks simple questions, automatically selects and completes the necessary forms, and double-checks the return like a personal accountant. You can then print the return and mail it in, or file it electronically to get the refund faster. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Former TurboTax User Prefers TaxCut
TaxCut is great! Never any problems. Intuitively easy to use.
I was burned by Turbo Tax two years in a row. They didn't have all the forms I needed and the electronic filing didn't work. I wound up having to hire H&R Block to do my taxes. I tried to get the "guaranteed" refund from TurboTax, but nobody answered the phone number they gave you to request the refund. TurboTax was a big ripoff. Buy TaxCut instead--you'll be much happier.

1-0 out of 5 stars Taxcut Quality has taken a nosedive.
I have used Taxcut at least 6 years now. I used Turbo Tax Deluxe once between tax years and returned back to Taxcut because it was a better price. This year I was ripped off. I should have gone with Turbo Tax. Not only did the software crash on XP, but it crashed at the end of my "Interview" of entering in all my information. Locked up every time I got to this point. There were also a few points along the way where data was lost for charitable contributions and a couple of other worksheets. In all I think I had at least 4 quirks to work around in the software. I did eventually figure out the lockup problem and got my taxes finished. Then after downloading the CA State and e-filing I spent another $45. I could have paid a tax guy to just do all my taxes in the long run. Taxcut will never get my business again. I am going to Turbotax next year.

1-0 out of 5 stars I should have known better...
I do not do this too often, I usually try to remain positive. At this moment I am looking at my tax return that was returned to me by the IRS. I should have known that there might have been something wrong when the program asked me to find specific answers to my questions on the IRS web site. I use tax programs to help me file, given that I do not know all the current tax laws, I did not expect the program to ask me to find the answers to my own questions.

Taxcut took me twice as long to file then when I use Turbo Tax. Errors were hard to correct and manual corrections would void your ability to file electronicaly. A full day went into preparing my taxes and now I will have to spend another day redoing my taxes with Turbo Tax. I do not think I will ever use Taxcut again.

I would like to close this review on a positive note, but I can only say that I am positive that I will not use H&R's products again.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
I used TaxCut for 2000 and had no problems, so I bought it again for 2001 and I have had nothing but problems with this year's program, I had to redo my taxes at least six or seven times because the program will not correct mistakes by the interview process -- and if you try to manually correct a mistake on the form, it warns you that you will NOT be allowed to e-file if you do that. The problem turned out to be "user error" but I interpret that as NOT "user friendly." The instructions were very vague and hard to understand. I finally had to complete my taxes on a paper form 1040 using the IRS's easy to understand instructions and then I was able to transfer that information into the program. In addition, the program also refused to allow me to e-file, stating that I was required by my state to file my state return electronically at the same time I filed my federal return (definitely NOT true!), and that I had to go back & purchase their state software program in order to complete that section. I had downloaded their update yesterday using the "update" button provided at the beginning of the interview -- however, when the program repeatedly refused to allow me to e-file until I bought their state program I realized that there had to be an error in their software. So I downloaded an update today using the "tools" button at the top of the screen - this time it was definitely a MUCH larger download and once the download was complete, the program finally allowed me to file!! What should have been a simple process took me two days and a LOT of aggravation to complete. Next year I'm getting TurboTax!

1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of junk
The program crashed all the time. Tech support was a joke. I tried the product on several computers and set it up different a couple of time. Same results everytime, it crashed. Spend the extra 5 bucks and buy turbo Tax. I still can't beleive I bought this garbage, never again. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I threw it away and reinstalled my old version from 1994
The title basically says it. I experienced major hiccups in this program, some that I couldn't fix (like trying to reconcile my statements but finding automatic enteries like my paycheck showed up in my register but not in the reconcile deposits list...that one can't be solved...) I didn't want to integrate everything.. i just wanted to keep accurate track of a few accounts. I REALLY dislike the ads that solicit me at the bottom of the screeen...."No I don't want to find out how to save more money on my mortgage by clicking there... I'll turn on my tv if i want commercials... and you want to charge me 70$ for the viewing rights?" save yourself the hassle and stress and stick with your old program... at least you know already how to handle it when it goes haywire. I even got a manual with the old 1994 program. Something I learned I'd have to purchase seperately for this new quicken 2001. I bought this to get me away from my computer. Having been a personal computer user since 1982 I am not impressed that this is what we've progressed to 20 years later. If however you love spending hours monkeying with poorly designed computer software you'll love this!

2-0 out of 5 stars buggy
Lost my data a few times with this one. Since I know my way around a hard drive, I've been able to recover. Wouldn't buy this one but what choices do you have....MS Money. Same ballgame.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice program, but...
This is a wonderful program which performs MOST everything I require...BUT, there are (as is usual) occasional bugs or problems (like all software) and Customer Service at Intuit is probably one of the least responsive I have ever seen. Usually this isn't a problem (as I said, it's a very good program), but even a small bug in your accounting program can have severe consequences, and without a decent Customer Service Dept. you can end up with a financial disaster unless you pay close attention.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I have used quicen deluxe and Quick books products since 95 and have loved them. I made the horible mistake of upgrading to Home and Business. After a week I have not had any success integrating my online bank accounts or brokerage accounts. Intuit has cluttered the interface with pay for services that you do not need. This software seems to be driven from the marketing department and not the engineering department. I am dissatisfied.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unpleasantness
    1. The manual is a shill for spending more money on web services you don't need. It is among the most vague things I've ever tried to use.

    2. There are obvious glitches in the file management tools. This frightens me -- this is my livelihood, after all, and not some game. The IRS will not let me blame Quicken if I make a major mistake.

    3. Very disappointing, grinding experience on the learning curve. Extremely un-inutive, Intuit. ... Read more

TaxCut Platinum takes the guesswork out of preparing your taxes, and turns tax time into a pain-free, logical, educational, and simplified experience.

It seemed like TaxCut Platinum was easier to use this year than ever.Navigating through taxable income, deductions, and penalties is far less tedious than it used to be. With TaxCut Platinum you can easily enter your W-2 information (and depending on your employer, some W-2s can be automatically populated), view educational videos on current tax law, and take an interview to see if you qualify for a specific section. TaxCut Platinum also lets you skip any steps with which you are already familiar, and easily return to any section of the form.

As is standard with most of these programs, you must purchase state tax software separately from the federal program. However, TaxCut Platinum includes rebate coupons for your state program and electronic filing fees. Once you have installed your state program, all the information you have already entered into your federal return will be automatically read by the state program. Once you've finished with both returns you can choose the format in which you want to file them: by mail or electronically. TaxCut Platinum will walk you through either process with printing and mailing instructions and electronic filing guidelines.

New features this year include Retirement Savings Enhancer, 9-Year Tax Preview, Home Office Assistant, and Portfolio Manager. Improvements have been made to the Error Check and Entry Manager features. TaxCut Platinum also includes professional tax advice from H&R Block.

While enjoyable is certainly not the first adjective that comes to mind when preparing your tax return, TaxCut Platinum certainly makes the process more than bearable. --Kendra Hayden ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I made the switch from TurboTax to TaxCut because of Intuit's copy-protection schemes that treat me like a criminal and make we worry about not having access to my return in the future. I figured TaxCut would be the same as TurboTax or maybe a little better since I never loved TurboTax. However, I found it to be worse. First the good points, it did import my dad from Quicken and last years return fairly well. Now the bad:
1. It had an annoying inconsistency in entering dates. Sometimes it insisted you use 2-digits etc. I think software should be smart enough to figure out the different ways people enter dates, rather than force people enter dates one way.
2. The platinum upgrade is worthless. I got it for the "capital gains assisteant" but that turned out to be nothing more than having you enter you information on multiple screens (interveiew style) rather than one. If you go with TaxCut save the 10 bucks and go with the deluxe or standard editions.
3. It did some to know how to handle my Employee Stock Purchase Plan. It did not ask me about the discount I bought the stock at (which is taxed differently I believe than the capital gains). Since I sold at a loss this did not worry me.
4. It had me enter information many times when it seemed like it should have been smarter. I think I enter my address 4 times - why can't the program figure out that I am not moving?

I am hoping that Intuit treats their customers better so I can go back to TurboTax next year. If not, I am not sure what I will do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very user friendly tax software
I have used TaxCut for several years now, and really appreciate its convenience and ease of use. The software works like an interview - you answer a list of questions, and when you are done, your tax return is complete. It picks up the data from prior year returns done on TaxCut, so if you use the program year after year, it gets progressively easier and less time-consuming to prepare your taxes. Clear explanations are provided for every entry, potential problem areas are flagged, and your return is compared with average taxpayer returns in your income bracket so you can see if your deductions etc. are out of line with the norm. The state program for my state is also very simple to use. In my opinion, using TaxCut is far simpler and less stressful than either doing taxes by hand or using a tax preparer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't use Tax Cut if you have to file an Oregon State return
Last year I used Turbo Tax and was able to file my state return electronically. This year I switched to Tax Cut and it doesn't support E-filing the Oregon State return. Now, at the last minute, I have to print and file a manual return. This will add about 2 months to the time it takes to get a refund. Next year it's back to Turbo Tax, no matter how bad it is, it's better than Tax Cut.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing; about as good as TurboTax was 2-3 years ago
I switched to TaxCut from TurboTax because reviews said it was as good as TurboTax but without TurboTax's copy protection scheme. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. Entering Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP) transactions was much more difficult than last year's TurboTax. The capital gains wizard was almost no help. The online instructions and help were much less helpful, and the help had a much poorer index.

Overall, I would say TaxCut 2003 is about as good as TurboTax was 2-3 years ago. But it is not nearly as easy to use as TurboTax was last year. As much as I dislike TurboTax's copy protection scheme, I will go back to TurboTax next year.

2-0 out of 5 stars Does not live up to TurboTax Deluxe
Since this is my first year of trying to file US Income Taxes _myself_, I picked TaxCut since I didn't like the TurboTax registration annoyance. I later hat the opportunity to enter my Federal and my California Tax Info on a friend's computer with TurboTax Deluxe and thus was able to compare the Interview process.

My tax situation was very easy except for 3 issues:
1. I had to pay tax due in 2002 for my 2001 State Tax Return
2. I collected foreign dividends, interest and captital gains
3. I payed foreign taxes (on those foreign dividends and
interests) and thus filed form 1116.

So what happend:
1. Knowing on where and how to enter the fact that I payed state
taxes, was a major hassle with TaxCut. The interview process
asked about it at one point, but then you were left alone
to figure out on which of the following screens you had
to enter this information, so that it would properly carry
over to the State tax program. There was nothing in the FAQ,
in any of the help sections or on the website. It took
two emails with customer support to get an answer to this

TurboTax explicitely asked that question in its interview
process and had my enter the amount right away.

2. Neither program provides any support for dealing with foreign
currencies, so you're on your own with the conversion.

3. Form 1116 was another nightmare with TaxCut, which basically
left you to filling out the forms / worksheets by yourself.
TurboTax made it much more easier.

Other issues:
- Changes in the Federal Data did not always carry over
properly to the State Return (i.e. when I deleted info
about Estimated Taxes payed). I only noticed this
when comparing the figures with TurboTax
- I bought the "Platinum" version, but I didn't see any
practical benefit.

At the end of the day both programs calculated the same
figures, however TurboTax' interview progress was much clearer

and mad me much more comfortable.

If TurboTax didn't have that awkward registration scheme I would never use TaxCut again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid and User Friendly, Great for Straightforward Situation
BOTTOM LINE: Quicken Lawyer Wills ('QLW') is a great, low-cost alternative to hiring a lawyer to prepare your will, which will run you a minimum of several hundred dollars. It takes just minutes to prepare a will, but its legal manual/support resources are extensive enough for those that want to spend much more time understanding the what/why behind their document.

QLW is published by Nolo Press, a well established publisher of self-help legal books. When creating a will, the software creates all of the legal language for you - you do not write a single word of legalese - and docs are tailored to each state's requirements. To get information from you and have you make decisions about the content/structure of your documents, QLW follows the typical "interview" format - easy to use and informative along the way. My wife and I each created wills in literally 20 minutes (but you probably have to put a bit of forethought into it, especially if you are married).

- Ease of use: idiot-proof interview format
- Legal help: good offline manual, good resources at Nolo website
- Clear execution information: tells you exactly how to execute the will
- Address book: enter a person's info (i.e. you spouse) and don't need to enter again in other parts of same doc
- Ease of use for married people: prepare one spouse's will and QLW has a function to flip the names to create the other spouse's will without starting from scratch

COMPETITORS: Kiplinger and Broderbund also publish estate planning software but I've had a chance to look at them (pre-installed on my computer when I bought it) and I'd stick with Quicken.

GET A LAWYER IF: While QLW functions well as an advisor, guiding you through the specific provisions within a will, it has its limits and is candid enough to admit it during the interviews/tutorials. Get a lawyer for situations like: you expect to owe federal estate taxes ($1.5 million limit in 2003 and going up rapidly), you own a small business or you expect to have a messy family situation upon death (i.e. an ex-spouse or children that don't get along) or live in a community property state.

THINK ABOUT QUICKEN LAWYER PERSONAL: If you have the sense to prepare a will and are in a life situation to start preparing a will, you probably could stand to have a few other basic estate planning documents like a living will/healthcare directive and a power of attorney (especially if you're married). So for a few bucks more, I might check out Quicken Lawyer Personal instead which will do all of this plus prepare a will for you (see my review of Quicken Lawyer Personal for more info). ... Whether you work from home or run a small business, Microsoft Money 2003 Deluxe & Business helps you keep track of your income and expenses. A full-featured, easy-to-use financial management solution, Money 2003 has a complete set of personal and business finance tools to keep you in the game.

Installation is simple as a wizard takes you step-by-step through the process. If you're upgrading, the steps are fewer and more easily traversed. Want to switch from Quicken? Money 2003 can do that, too, with a handy file converter. Audio and video help is readily available as well, making the experience even easier for first-timers.

As for features, few things have changed from Money 2002, making upgrading less of a necessity and more of an option. With a new portfolio-customization toolbar and portfolio highlight and analysis reports, most of the added features for personal finance management are aimed at investors. A new online research center is also included, giving you fast access to tools and information such as company reports, earning estimates, market reports, quotes, news, and charts.

On the business side, Money now has payroll support powered by PayCycle, making paydays a little simpler. Some new tax features allow you to get a better handle on things with side-by-side comparisons, capital gains scenarios, and loss carryover features.

What Money continues to do best though is Web integration. Whether you're downloading bank statements, checking stock prices, or paying your bills, all of it can be accessed right in Money. As an additional incentive to take advantage of its Web features, Microsoft has thrown in one year of their online bill paying service, one free online tax preparation and filing, an Equifax credit report, and a consultation with a financial planner.

Money 2003 Deluxe & Business is a great software package for managing your personal and business finances and goals on your Windows PC. While there are only a few reasons for upgrading from 2002, Microsoft continues to give you more bang for your buck. --Josh Goldman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MUCH Better Than Quicken
Let me first say that I have been a diehard Quicken user for the better part of 9 years, and I am not a particular fan of Microsoft. But I have to give credit where credit is due. I decided to try Microsoft Money because Quicken's interface has recently become so cluttered with advertisements and nonsense that it has become almost impossible to navigate. In addition, my experience with Quicken Deluxe 2003 has been so incredibly bad (support, bugs, crashes, etc.) that I had to try some alternative.

At first I was going to buy Microsoft Money Deluxe 2003. But, for just a little extra, I decided to try the Deluxe & Business version instead. I have a small internet side business and I thought this would be a perfect fit.

First, let me address the home portion of the program:
This is an incredible step-up from the equivalent version of Quicken. The interface is simple, the program is not "buggy", and the online help is more than comprehensive enough to get you through even the toughest of problems. Because I was already using the 2003 version of Quicken, I was not able to automatically transfer my Quicken file, so I cannot comment on how that particular feature works. But I can certainly tell you that setting up all of my accounts from scratch (and I have quite a few) was more than simple. All of the online banking features worked flawlessly, and I was up and running in about 3 hours - start to finish. And with much less frustration than with Quicken.

As for the business portion of the program:
This area is, admittedly, not very advanced. It is good for very small side businesses (such as mine), but for anything more comprehensive, you may want to look elsewhere. I think the problem with marketing these two features together is that a lot of people may be expecting too much out of the business portion of the program, so they tend to write-off the whole thing. This program is intended only for the very smalest home business owner. If you are looking for anything more comprehensive than that, my advice would be to invest in the standard or deluxe versions of Micrsoft Money for your personal finances, and look elsewhere for a more comprehensive accounting program for your business finances. But if you decide to go the frugal route, expect to get what you pay for.

In conclusion, Microsoft Money is, in my estimation, 10x easier to use than Quicken and is laid out in a much nicer fashion. In addition, there are no bugs that I could find, whereas Quicken was giving me constant problems (browser conflicts, lock-ups, etc.) Take it from a long time Quicken user - It's not too late to switch. Go buy Microsoft Money today.

1-0 out of 5 stars save your money, buy a different program
Frustrating program, frustrating help system. Most features do not work. Worthless for business.

2-0 out of 5 stars Money 2003 Deluxe& Business weak for business
I purchased Money 2003 Deluxe & Business to include my wife's self-employed service business. The regular 'home' part of the program is fairly good and has lots of feature. The business part lacks quite a bit in several areas. The invoice designer wouldn't save a modified version on my Win 98 machine but works on Win Me on my notebook. Modification are rather limited. Certain fields have to stay in a certain frames within the Invoice. Worse, payment of invoices doesn't allow to enter a check number. When a payment is received and put into an account it becomes divorced from the invoice. The invoice shows having been paid but it is no longer associated with the actual payment entry. Makes it very hard to look and and figure out when problems arise. Also the business reports are almost un customizable except in a few minor things. Very frustrating. Accounts can't be designated as business accounts, distinguished from home accounts. Also 'project' information can not be put on invoices. Fields (such as customer name) are limited in size. Some Businesses have more than 20 or so characters in their name!
Anyway, it looks like we will be buying the Quicken equivalent. From the 'tour' of the Quicken site at least we can enter a check number against an invoice!

3-0 out of 5 stars Quicken vs. Money: and the winner is...
Well, I don't either program wins on all counts. I tried both and experienced frustrations with each. In the end, I stuck with Quicken only because Money couldn't import my Quicken data as promised.

Both just seem too hard to learn. I am a computer wiz and found them both hard to use -- I can't imagine others trying to get the hang of it. They really need to stop adding features and focus on the usability of the programs. But overall, I would have to say Money did have a cleaner interface that was easier to master.

However, both really fail at invoicing. They both claim you can create custom invoices, but the customization is extremely limited and messes things up so much that you eventually just end up using the defaults.

So why did I stick with Quicken? Well, Money guarantees that it can import your information from Quicken, but it failed to import my data. Microsoft technical support tried a few simple solutions, but then told me "tough luck." I wan't about to reenter a years worth of info, so I retreated back to Quicken since Money wasn't that much better to make it worth my while.

1-0 out of 5 stars Product not as promised
As a new treasurer for simple homeowners association, I purchased this product to manage the homeowner's fees and to keep track of association bills. I decided to try Money Business 2003 because it advertises that you can create or modify the invoice templates to taper to your business. (I wanted to change the fields from hours to months and quantity to rate... a simple request) No matter how I tried to modify an invoice it would not save. It appears this function does not work, I have read all the help areas, went to the website and all information states you need to click on modify a template to save. A "modify button" does not exist anywhere on the program. In order to get technical assistance from MS you have to pay ...So, I say forget this and buy a copy of Quicken. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars beware - the rebate - they won't send the rebate to you
I sent in all of my documentation for the rebate so that this would be free after rebate (as advertised everywhere). They sent me a postcard saying that they needed my receipt. I don't know if they don't take the Amazon shipping receipts or if they just don't want to issue rebates. I think that's what they count on to give so much "free" software away - not issuing $$ back to purchasers. This was the first time I've purchased tax software and I won't buy this product again - ever.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great
I find that this product makes Mass Tax so much more enjoyable. I don`t like doing taxes but using this product makes them fun.

1-0 out of 5 stars Many bugs in Turbo Tax state
I have used Turbo Tax for many years, but this is the last. The NJ state version has many calculation errors and bugs. Technical support says it unable to help, as the calculations are to complicated for them to understand. The program rounds up figures when importing from federal program. Beware of this program, especially if you paid excess UE & DI. Many other errors. No fix available. Avoid this product.

The online people know nothing and the phone support is closed except during daytime business hours.SO BUY THIS PRODUCT AT YOUR OWN RISK BUT BE WARNED IT DOES NOT WORK AND IS NOT SUPPORTED!

Intuit has fallen vey very far. You can not even tab through screens anymore but must constantly point and click with the mouse. Customer support is also almost nonexistant. 1-0 out of 5 stars Intuit pulls the wool over...
I upgraded to 2005 because it was "required" to continue electronic bill pay. The upgrade was a disaster so I had to call Tech help...which is when I eventually discovered Intuit had switched the electronic payment service company.I was appalled that they would be so underhanded.I had been working with Checkfree (the company that processed e-payments) for 9 yrs (first directly then through Quicken),was very satisfied with their service and had no intentions of leaving them.Long story short...I am done with Quicken and their electronic billpay!! This switch, without the customer's knowledge, sounds a lot like the "slamming" the phone companies used to do.Bottom line is, I may be looking at MS Money to track finances.I never thought Quicken was easy to use...certainly not pun ;-))

1-0 out of 5 stars More wasted money
Every year they hit you for upgrades. My last upgrade was 2003 and I eventually uninstalled it and went back to 2002 which I was using until last week. This upgrade is no different than 2003 and the user interface "Bites".The only reason I upgraded was because they threatened to stop honoring my electronic transactions unless I upgraded. What kind of BS is that.If MS Money wasn't so difficult to use I switch in a heart beat. This is my last upgrade, after this I'm using my banks web site for all my banking needs. The quicken product has really gone down hill and all they want is to get is many dollars out of you as they can.

In fact it is just more trouble than its worth. I bought Quicken 2005 because of the promised " Better Backup and Archiving".If I can find out if this piece of junk can be converted to M S MONEY I will be leaving Quicken for good. 2-0 out of 5 stars "Multi-user"??
I have a small business where 3 people need access to Invoices, POs and inventory. It seems, If you want to do anything of any impotence, you have to go to single user mode. For example; importing customers, anything with inventory, anything with vendors. All anyone can do in multi-user mode is create invoices and POs. It was a waist of money for us as we still find ourselves in single user mode most of the time. Oh, and the there are tuns of "OK" buttons to press. Every time you tell it to do something, expect to press at least 2 "OK" buttons before it will do it. Don't tell me "QB is now ready to..." do something, JUST DO IT. All in all, it's pretty much the same thing as the QB Pro. If you are like us, and need more people to access information, I suggest upgrading to something else. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great product, lousy company--never got refund for state
I give Turbo Tax 5 stars and Intuit 1 star, averaging to 3 stars.

I've used Mac'N'Tax (the Turbo Tax predecessor that Intuit bought out) and Turbo Tax since the late-80's--so that's a lot of returns. The product has worked very well for me, with only a few complaints. The ability to roll forward your tax information year after year is one of the compelling features of Turbo Tax--once you set up a depreciation, or have credits that carry forward, Turbo Tax populates this information in next year's return.

However, I have found Intuit to have become less friendly and more work to deal with as the year's have gone by. If you end up needing technical support your entire experience with the product will probably be soured. In 2003 even though the "Deluxe" product advertised that it came with a free state product, you had to pay to download and then send in the voucher to get your money refunded. Quite annoying, but the real kicker is that the refund never came and Intuit was pretty much unresponsive to my attempts to follow up.

I will probably continue using Turbo Tax because the product is solid (at least for me...I see others have had issues), and because once you've got your tax information in for one year, the next year and the next year after that you keep reaping benefits. I just wish some other company would buy the product from Intuit so I could quit dealing with them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now if they'd stop charging a premium for Mac users.
Regarding the C-Dilla issue... this is the statement from Intuit, makers of TurboTax. Keep in mind, it was never in the Mac software anyway.

"In response to customer feedback, we have removed the technology from TurboTax 2003 products. In addition, Intuit is changing its policy and updating the TurboTax software license agreement, enabling customers to use TurboTax software to install, prepare, file and print multiple returns for themselves and their family from multiple computers."

I've always found TurboTax to be a very good product. If this C-Dilla issue proves to have been resolved, it may be again. However, their insistance that they need to charge a 25% premium for the Mac version is just foolish.

5-0 out of 5 stars saves my sanity every year!
I have been using TurboTax (formerly MacInTax) for 6 years now, and it gets better every year. Beginning last year, I did the electronic filing and I couldn't have been happier with the results. Philosophical arguments notwithstanding regarding doing this electronically, I did get an e-mail response from Quicken saying everything went through and 2 days later a response from the IRS that they had received my return. I always used to put off filing my taxes until the last possible moment because I dreaded reading all the details and filling out the complicated boxes with the vague instructions. It's not something you want to get wrong. I have never had a tax preparer do my taxes for me - I've always done my own since I was 17, but procrastination has always been my enemy, even when I had a juicy refund coming to me.

TurboTax takes the chore and bore out of the process. Each aspect of the software has little checks to make sure you're doing everything correctly. I was able to import my data from previous returns to save loads of time filling out stuff that doesn't change from year to year as a rule.

The software takes you dialogue by dialogue asking you questions like "do you own any stocks?" and if not, you skip the all the related questions so you don't have to muddle through things that don't apply to you. Everything is in concise categories.

Anytime you have a question, you can click on the help button for specific, context-sensitive information. The major sections have built-in QuickTime videos of professional tax experts explaining the latest tax laws and what the IRS is looking for, etc. etc.

When you're about all done, it does an error check and automatically goes through everything on your return and will tell you if anything on your return contains errors or otherwise will raise a red flag with the IRS and make you more vulnerable to an audit.

After filing my taxes with Turbo Tax, I got my refund deposited into my bank account electronically within 6 days. For those who are not expecting refunds, but rather have to send payment to the IRS, you can set up your payment so that it gets sent at the last possible moment on April 15, even if you file much earlier.

When you first install the software, it first checks with Intuit's servers for any updates and allows you to download State Tax software for free (if applicable). Fortunately, there are no state income taxes in Texas (yea for us!).

I am using a nearly 6-year-old Mac running (albeit slowly) Panther (10.3.3) and the software ran like a champ.

1-0 out of 5 stars Updates a nightmare, no customer support
I've used Turbotax ever since the MacInTax years, and the software was always easy to use and update--until now. Using an iMac with OS 9.2.2 and Turbotax Deluxe 2003, over a 56K modem the update that promises to take "just a few minutes" actually takes about 120 of them, that is, if something does not crash on you first. The updates would apparently install successfully but the program kept telling me, "You've never checked for updates"--and refused to let me fill out form 4652 for Depreciation based on that. After attempting the download at least three or four times, I ordered the "update on CD". It took 10 days to arrive. After installing it, the same error message appeared again. Also, apparently the "update" does not put obsolete files into the trash. Therefore, finally after several 'Update" attempts I ended up with several folders and did not know which files were up to date or which files my program was pointing to. So I spent several hours going through all the folders manually comparing file creation dates. This enabled me to finally complete form 4652 but after finishing the State return, I once again received an error message, "You've never checked for updates". All I've spent the last three weeks doing is checking for updates!

The State return was very disappointing also, because, if you need to quit in the middle, the software cannot remember where you left off--so you may have to click through literally tens of screens to get back to where you were.

Intuit's online "support" was a pointless waste of hours and hours of even more time. With this year's product being so unsatisfactory, I simply could not justify sending Intuit a single penny more to get it working. I shouldn't have to. I began my tax return at the end of February. Now it is April 13 and I still have not got this garbage product running.

Next year I won't mind spending hundreds of dollars more to take my taxes to an accountant. Time is money too, and life is way too short to waste any of it trying to fix a product that ought to have been debugged and finished BEFORE it was shipped.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't expect to import '02 TaxCut data!
Despite assurances from TurboTax customer service that I could import data from last year's TaxCut (ever try to manually enter years of depreciation?), I found that he forgot to mention the details. You have to find a PC computer with PC TurboTax, import the TaxCut data, then transfer that file into your Mac for use. Just a slight omission!

Now after having no other choice but to also purchase '03 TaxCut, I can honestly say I'll never buy an Intuit product again... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great educational product, no substitute for a lawyer though
I used this product to practice writing up my will, my living trust and estate planning documents. It has very good online help, and explains the terminologies, includes checklists, and answers a lot of legal questions. This product will save you time with a real lawyer (who charges by the hour), in that you don't have to ask the real basic questions, since you've already been tutored. The will generated is perfectly legal, but I would advice using a lawyer for more complicated documents. The checklists and the instructions to give to your executor are great, because you can list all of the details you'd want someone to know about in case you are gone.

As others have stated, there was no promised rebate coupon in the box.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid, User Friendly, Great for Straightforward Situations
BOTTOM LINE: Quicken Lawyer Personal ('QLP') is a great, low-cost alternative to hiring a lawyer to prepare your basic estate planning document, which will run you a minimum of several hundred dollars. It takes just minutes to prepare a will, but its legal manual/support resources are extensive enough for those that want to spend much more time understanding the what/why behind their documents.

QLP is published by Nolo Press, a well established publisher of self-help legal books. QLP begins by walking you through a number of typical life-stage situations (i.e. young w/ no kids, married w/ kids, etc.) and comes up with a list of suggested documents and along the way explains why you might need each of these documents. When creating a particular document, the software writes all of the legal language for you - you do not write a single word of legalese - and docs are tailored to each state's requirements. To get information from you and have you make decisions about the content/structure of your documents, QLP follows the typical "interview" format - easy to use and informative along the way. My wife and I each created wills, healthcare directives and powers of attorney in about an hour or two.

- Ease of use: idiot-proof interview format
- Legal help: good offline manual, good resources at Nolo website
- Clear execution information: tells you exactly what each document needs to be put into effect (some need notarization, some need just witnesses)
- Address book: enter a person's info (i.e. your spouse) and don't need to enter again in other parts of same doc or other docs

QLP is primarily estate planning software. It has a few of the most important ancillary documents (Child Care Agreement, Limited POA for Finances), but Kiplinger's Home Attorney and Broderbund's Family Attorney have a full complement of general use form documents. However, if you look through these lists, most are either not really necessary (Trip Permission Slip you can write yourself on scrap of paper or school gives it to you) or are better left to professionals unless you know exactly what you are doing (i.e. residential real estate sales contract and home services contract - too much legalese in there to just print, drop your name in and sign!?).

COMPETITORS: As mentioned above, Kiplinger's Home Attorney and Broderbund's Family Attorney have a more extensive list of docs (many of which you'll never need IMHO). Home Attorney came preloaded on my computer so had a chance to try it -- not nearly as user friendly, kind of clunky and actually makes you edit the document to enter your name, county, etc - this scares me. Don't have Family Attorney so can't comment on its ease of use, sorry. If you really need a ton of general use forms, get Home Attorney or Family Attorney - otherwise stick with Quicken.

GET A LAWYER IF: While QLP functions well as an advisor, telling you when you might need certain documents or even specific provisions within documents, it has its limits and is candid enough to admit it during the interviews/tutorials. Get a lawyer for situations like: you expect to owe federal estate taxes ($1.5 million limit in 2003 and going up rapidly), you own a small business or you expect to have a messy family situation upon death (i.e. an ex-spouse or children that don't get along) or live in a community property state.

1-0 out of 5 stars No support?
I bought this software a few months ago but didn't get around installing it until today. When I tried to register the software I got the message that the software is no longer supported! I was asked to call an 800 number to get a discount on an upgrade. This is the first time I ever ran across a name-brand software package that discontinues support before the software is even one year old! While I may still use the software I found it appalling that the publisher of this software dares to force customers to pay for an "upgrade" immediately upon installation of software that they just purchased.

1-0 out of 5 stars Support ended after just a year and a half????
I am an owner of Quicken Lawyer 2002 Personal Deluxe. I had to reinstall the software when my computer quit. I bought a new one and installed QLP2002. When I went to use the automatic web update of the software, I was informed that "This version is no longer supported, and Web Update is not available... we recommend that you upgrade... for only $29.99. It is an outrage that Nolo has revoked patches they had previously made available. The lack of any support is the reason I will NEVER purchase another Quicken Lawyer product.

1-0 out of 5 stars No long-term support?
I am an owner of Quicken Lawyer 2002 Personal Deluxe, which according to Amazon is just ONE VERSION BACK from this one. When my computer went south last week, I bought a new one and installed QLP2002. When I went to use the automatic web update of the software, I was informed that "This version is no longer supported, and Web Update is not available... we recommend that you upgrade... for only $29.99."

While, yes, I'm sure that legal things do change, they do not change that much, and I find it reprehensible that Nolo has revoked patches they had previously made available. Imagine any other manufacturer doing that -- "sorry, Office 2000 is no longer supported, so you can't download the patches we previously made available to you. Either use Office 2000 with none of the bugs corrected, or pay $400 for Office 2003." Ridiculous. So, while I did like the software, the lack of any longer-term support is a real turn-off for me. ... Isn't money supposed to make our lives easier? Quicken 2003 Premier takes that thought to heart and streamlines financial tasks as simple as recording bills paid or as complex as devising retirement strategies. New users will quickly be exploring their accounts online and checking out options for excising debt and investing wisely, while upgraders will find the new interface even cleaner and more intuitive than before.

The Web-based system is simple to understand at a glance, easy to customize, and fully integrated with Internet Explorer--so users can quickly find financial information online from banks, brokerages, and This makes most banking and investment account record keeping trivially easy, though of course not all institutions are Web compatible yet. Simple planning of investments, retirement, and debt reduction is just as easy, using the templates and wizards easily available from the software's start page.

More adventurous users will find a wealth of online resources enabling them to automate tasks related to investments, but should take great care when setting up such assistance. Some of the advanced features are difficult for novices to understand; they are well-advised to consult with professional financial planners before committing resources on their own.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worse than junk
Buying this software was the worst financial decision I have ever made. My accounts are so messed up by now that I'm on the verge of starting over, thus losing nearly ten years of historical data. With Quicken 2000 my account balances were reconciled to the absolute penny. I always knew where my finances, but now I don't trust anything I see.

I wish I'd never laid eyes on this software.

2-0 out of 5 stars Problems with Quicken 2003 H&B
I have been a Quicken user for many years, and have never seen a product as unstable as Quicken 2003. Bank accounts that were solidly in balance somehow becomes "out-of-balance" and Quicken forces me to put an adjustment entry that is not needed. This then forces it out of balance, although Quicken says it is balanced. Huh? Also, the Backup utility somehow stopped working and stopped allowing me to create a backup file. I get all sorts of errors now. Maybe the other reviewers are right. I probably should switch to MS Money. Arrrgh!

1-0 out of 5 stars Too much, too little.
As a previous user of quicken basic and quickbooks, Premier version has just added lots of additional, unnessary and irritating options. Advertising for more of quickens features are displayed on every menu, screen and report/graph. Quicken basic has all the good fundamentals for the average guy or small business even, and if someone outgrows basic move right to Quickbooks Pro. Forget about messing with these useless features that add no value just cost.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Monumental Pain
I've spent the last three evenings trying to get accounts properly set-up. I've had a horrendous time importing my brokerage data even though it download all of it from my broker. It doesn't create reports, tells me the data for my stocks are unavailable because the symbol is wrong yet, though the symbol is corrected, it remembers the incorrect one! Nothing to do but delete and re-enter.

I've already uninstalled and re-installed the program twice because it doesn't completely erase transactions that are incorrectly entered. Further it doesn't integrate my paychecks properly. After entering year-to-date information and latest paychecks it determined I've earned $-342. from my job! I know I'm not paid nearly what I'm worth but jeez.... It came to this conclusion DESPITE the fact that I cross-checked each entered paycheck and they were entered correctly. And heaven forbid you're a wage earner with different statements every 2 weeks, Quicken likes to assume all your paychecks will be the same. Your company changes its pay schedule? You're screwed. It will demand a statement on dates which are no longer valid. Have a taxable benefit from your company that isn't listed in your pay? No way to enter it!

It doesn't import TurboTax 2002 data either!

This has been a terrible disappointment. For what I paid, $$. I feel I've been completely ripped-off. The online help is a joke. I hope MS Money is better than this.

1-0 out of 5 stars Quicken 2003 is a disaster!
I have had Quicken for 15 years and just upgraded to 2003 version. I have had nothing but problems with it. I just purchased a new computer and have tried to backup my quicken files on a floppy and a cd without any success. Though my original backup is there, I have tried to transfer and copy the
data without any success. It will not allow me to get that infomation. I have lost precious time in what used to be a simple procedure. There is no helpful technical support. I do not recommend this version at all and as soon as I can get out of it, I will go back to an earlier version. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME
I am incredibly disappointed with Quicken. I am a first time quicken user and was expecting far more from this software. In fact, it seems to me to be the poorest software i have ever seen. When you open the box, there is no instruction manual. The program is slow and crashes continually. The screen and options are redundant and set up in no logical way, giving you the feeling, as you are fooling around, hitting every button (because there is no instruction manual so you are on your own), that there are about 50,000 things quicken can do for you, where really there are only about 8. Preferences and customize options are annoying, and for anyone adept at computers, this program will drive you nuts because it is so rigid -- there are so few options for REALLY customizing quicken to satisfy your needs -- and my needs are the most basic -- i am still a student!!!!!!!!! I wish i had never bought quicken and just set up a spreadsheet on excel for my finances. you can do more on excel than you can do on quicken, and make all the same charts, and do what you want without waiting 8 years for the program to respond every time you push a button and without having to go through a rigamarole to set up loan accounts. use your time learning how to use excel's beginner and advanced features, NOT quicken's useless ones!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A quicken user since version 2.0
I've used Quicken since 1994 when I bought my first computer and Quick 2.0 came preinstalled. Since then I've tried MS-Money twice. I keep going back to Quicken. It's intuitive, logical and makes reconciling the check book a breeze. I admit that my finaces are fairly simple and others may need the deluxe or small business versions of the program, but I think for the average person the basic program is perfect. I don't upgrade every year. I don't think there's a need to. I moved from version 2.0 to Quicken 98 to the current version. The program is very stable. I haven't had problems with bugs or crashes in any version. I recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Intuit does not stand behind its product anymore
Having been a Quicken user for many years I upgraded to Quicken 2001 for the internet downloading features. Be very careful if you do this! Although the regular banking seems OK, the investment price history updating puts in the WRONG NUMBERS. Mine even added security prices for the year 2003! All the software support options are charged for at ~$10/query.

Intuit has hit on a good way of making money: write a sloppy product, don't test it and charge your customers for finding the problems. Oh, and make yourselves very difficult to contact.

Check out the forums on the Quicken web site to get a flavour for what to expect if you are seriously considering a purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Suite of Products For Home
All three of these items have proven very useful for home use. I have been a Quicken user for years, and the 2001 edition is well worth the purchase. Turbo Tax Deluxe is worth the extra cost over standard Turbo Tax because one electronic filing and one individual state filing is included. You have to pay additional money in the standard package for those features. Plus, in the deluxe version there is great and useful tax information and assistance. The Family Lawyer is also well worth the investment. My wife and I saved the expense of hiring a lawyer to draft our wills, plus we were able to develop a few other legalese forms for childcare and the like. No telling how much money that saved us. This suite is worth dishing out a few bucks to have in your office.

3-0 out of 5 stars Quicken Basic is very basic
The Basic version of Quicken 2001 appears to be a tickler only. This version was purchased for the simple task of printing checks (due to my poor handwriting), but there is insufficient flexibility in formatting the print to (1)change the memo, and (2)align the fields on my checks. I am sure that with Quicken check forms it would do better, but that should have been mentioned in the specifications. The Help instructions seem to be written for a different version of Quicken, as they mention course and fine print-field adjustments that were not available on the Basic version of 2001. E-mail help, which is now fairly standard at other software publishers, is not (yet) available. ... Read more
