1-0 out of 5 stars PC DOS 2000 CD-ROM
According to the installation instructions in the User's Guide you must have a copy of DOS 3.3 or higher (THUS THIS IS AN UPGRADE). But, there is no indication in Amazon's advertisement or on the cover of the User's Guide that this is an upgrade. The first mention that it is an upgrade is on page xii of the User's Guide.

So if you don't already have a version of DOS, DON'T buy the CD-ROM.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best DOS yet
I'm a big DOS games enthusiast and I've found PC DOS 2000 to be hands down the best version of DOS I've used. The best features of PC DOS 2000 are the amount of free conventional memory you can get compared to older versions, as well as the inclusion of ramboost, which is an excellent automated memory manager. I built another pc just for this OS (dual booted with win 2000 with no problems). Windows 3.x runs great in PC DOS 2000. I've been able to run many games perfectly that I haven't been able to run well or at all in almost 10 years. No problems running hardcore memory hungry games like Ultima VII. If you like DOS and you're using an older version do yourself a favor and pick up a copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars IBM PC DOS 2000
If you're truly an old hand at computers, you may still have 5.25 floppy drives, 2400 baud modems, AST memory expansion cards and maybe even a few CGA video cards laying around. Do you remember RLL hard drives of less then 50 Megga bytes? How about LIM ver. 4.0? If you know about this stuff, you're probably also a big fan of the command line. If so, DOS is for you. And THIS DOS is probably the best out there, not to mention last.

Like most DOS OSs, (and unlike GUIs) PC DOS is fast, boots and loads/runs programs nearly instantly, and works quite well with Windows 3.x. PC DOS 2000 comes with plenty of utilities plus the REXX programming system, built-in Antiviral protection and good documentation. I recommend it highly! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but dated
MS-DOS. What more can you say? It's fast, stable and was the work horse of PC's for years. However, if you still use DOS (even sometimes) like I do you should try IBM's PC-DOS 2000. It's just as stable, a bit faster, uses less memory and it has been brought up to date. MS-DOS is good. You can't go wrong with it. But PC-DOS 2000 is better. If you're updating give it a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars MS-DOS 6.22, a MUST buy!
When I got my new version of MS-DOS I was suprised at all of the new features it had. If you like to work in DOS and have an older version, I highly recomend that you buy this product. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DOS still has a future!!
There is still a place for DOS in the computing world - older
systems, with limited resources, that are doing basic word
processing, database management, text-only Internet access,
and telemetry support - and PC DOS 2000 is the perfect OS
to keep these machines chugging along ... Y2K compliancy,
new programming, ease of use, and many utilities.

Just a comment on the Warning! review by Dr. Ronald Gibbons -
IBM makes it very clear that they do NOT recommend using
PC DOS 2000 with Win95 or Win98.

The following is quoted from IBM's FAQ page

"Can I run PC DOS 2000 with Windows 95 / Windows 98?"

"Unlike Windows 3.x which requires a separate operating
system (DOS), Windows 95 and Windows 98 have combined
DOS and Windows into an integrated product. It is not
recommended that you install PC DOS 2000 on a system
running Windows 95 or Windows 98."

2-0 out of 5 stars Warning!
The product MIGHT be good, but I never had the opportunity to use it. The program loaded witjout problem, but then I received a message indicating that PC DOS 2000 does not support the version of windows that I have loaded. I have Windows 95 and MS Office. No matter what I did I could not load thoses programs, nor could I return to DOS 6.0. In the end I had to reformat Drive C: and completely reload all of my software. There should have been a warning about which versions of software that PC DOS 2000 supports.

5-0 out of 5 stars DOS is not dead
PC-DOS 2000 is a minor upgrade to PC-DOS 7.0, the version that came out as Windows 95 was released. This version is Y2K compliant and supports the new Euro currency symbol. It comes with many features not associated with DOS such as pen support and PCMCIA support. It also comes with a GUI backup program, Stacker 4.0, IBM antivirus, REXX programming and a plethora of utilities. Runs on anything from an 8088 upwards. I use it on my laptop with Windows for Workgroups 3.11. Even though it's a 486 I find it faster than the Pentium laptops my friends have that are running Win9x or WinME. I credit the speed in part to PC-DOS 2000. After 17 years of tweaks and improvements to DOS, PC-DOS 2000 is honed for speed and minimal memory usage. And it's just about perfect. ... Read more
