4-0 out of 5 stars Hard to believe Linux could be this easy!
Trying to pick a Linux distribution can be a bit hard. You can go with the most popular (RedHat) or the most featured (SuSIE) or you can look for one that's best taloried to what you want.

At the core, all Linux distrubtions have the same OS kernal (well some may have slightly different versions) and even come with a lot of the same core third-party applications (Squid Proxy Server, MySQL Server, Apache Web Server, etc...). I choice Calderas eServer distrubtion because it is taloried for web developers/administrators.

The install is super easy, you can boot right off the CD-ROM and do a complete install on a fresh hard drive (or as a partion) in less than an hour (amazing since Windows 2000 Server takes about 2.5 hours to install). The install process is very intuitive and 100% painless, Caldera's Linux detected 100% of my hardware and found appropriate drivers, all I had to do was click the "Next" button.

Once the Install was complete, I booted the system and was very pleased to find all the server apps I needed (MySQL, Squid Proxy Server, Apache, Tomcat JSP Server) all setup with default configurations and ready to go. You even get a web-based Admin tool that lets you configure all of these servers in one central place. I did have one or two ruff-spots, but since I didn't pay a penny for the OS .... I was able to buy a good book on getting started with OpenLinux.

Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great to have!
This product enables you to install and configure in relaxed environment. You just sit back and relax, rest are taken care by the installer, which is powerful.

You will recover the cost of the product with Visual age license itself. Webadmin is easy. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Linux is quickly moving from being an alternative operating system to anindustry powerhouse, but few Windows users who want to experiment with the OS are willing to put up with the installation hassles and incompatibilityproblems it currently presents. Linux for Windows is an attempt to let thecurious have their cake and eat it, too, by providing a way for MandrakeSoft'sLinux-Mandrake 7.2 and Windows to peacefully coexist on the same hard drivewithout requiring Linux to reside on a separate partition.

It's a good thing this software comes with a thick instruction manual, becausenone of the installation options are straightforward. The first involves settingthe operating system up in its own hard drive partition, just like any otherLinux installation, but, since this product is advertised as a Linux releasedesigned to get along with Windows, we installed it in our existing Windowspartition. There are some drawbacks to doing this, in that Linux runs much moreslowly than it would if installed in a dedicated partition, and if Windows isuninstalled, Linux is lost as well. You'll definitely want a fast computer withplenty of memory to get the most out of the operating system, as the 400 MHzPentium II test system with 64 MB of RAM we tried it on was barely adequate.

The Linux for Windows CD is bootable, and that's the easiest way to install thesoftware if you know how to change the PC's boot order. Otherwise, when the CDis loaded in Windows, users are presented with the option to create a bootdiskette. Either way, the boot CD or diskette is used to launch DrakX for theactual installation. DrakX is a graphical wizard that guided us step-by-stepthrough the installation procedure, and the manual has information on nearlyevery option. It is possible to delete everything on your hard drive if thewrong option is selected, so pay close attention during every step.

Once installed, we had no trouble running Linux, aside from its operatingextremely slowly during our first session. Subsequent sessions ran much moresmoothly and booted faster, so give it a few tries if you experience similarproblems. Our only real gripe is that the boot menu that let us choose whetherwe wanted to boot Linux or Windows defaulted to Linux, and there was no way tochange things so that Windows was the default operating system. If you can dealwith that and the relatively high system requirements, Linux for Windows is anexcellent way for the timorous to experience and experiment with Linux withoutlosing Windows functionality. However, power users will want to opt for a Linuxdistribution that sits on its own partition. --T. Byrl Baker ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I DIDN'T GET WHAT I DIDN'T PAY FOR!
Very easy to install, assuming you have a bootable CDROM system. If not, your problems are just beginning. Mine installed in 10-15 minutes. However, the system would not boot up. I spent many hours online searching for help and downloading over 40 pages of info. To date, my linux OS still doesn't run! I suggest that if you are serious about using linux as an OS, ask around to see if anyone near you has any experience with it. Then, see if their version of linux works on your machine before purchasing it. There are many different distributors and versions of linux and most new users have problems! TEST THE WATERS BEFORE DIVING IN!

1-0 out of 5 stars Computer Geek
From a extreme computer user I would not recommend this product for anyone that wants to get into Linux. Linux can be a little difficult when you have been a long time windows user. To get the most out of linux you have use linux the way it was meant to be used. There is plently of info on the net, than go download Mandrake Linux for free. It makes it easy to partition your hard drive or install onto a seperate one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works well for dual booting...
I decided to purchase this software as a lazy way to get Linux functionality on my home laptop. I didn't want to hassle with trying to setup all the disks and everything. I installed this software on a Gateway 9100XL laptop (PII 300, 128 MB RAM). Install went perfect and I now have a dual-booting Windows 98SE/Linux machine.

The install didn't require any real intervention on my part (other than to choose a couple of hardware options).

2-0 out of 5 stars Wasn't as convenient as made out to be.
Not only was there a number of inconsistencies between the installation manual and the actual installation process, making you feel like you might be doing something wrong throughout the entire things, but if you install it on any drive except for your C drive (Or first partition, whichever) the bootloader can't find windows. I suppose if you wanted to use a boot disk for Windows it would be okay, but that's not quite what I had in mind when I bought it. I don't recommend this product at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Linux install
I am a die hard windows user. I have decided that I MUST learn to use Linux. Linux has some features that are very useful to people with home networks.

I do not agree with the person that wrote the LONG story about why he did not like this product and all of his install problems. First of all, IF YOU WILL READ THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE YOU INSTALL the install will go very well. I installed and had NO PROBLEMS. However, I did take time to read the book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excels in ease of use but still a long way to go...
I am a linux enthusiast and have been trying out new linux distributions as they come out for the past 3 years. Needless to say, linux's 2.4 kernel has made some dramatic improvments and so has KDE 3.

While RedHat is suited better for enterprise users, Mandrake and SuSe try to adapt their packaging for the average home user. SuSe 8.0 has to be the "easiest" linux distribution out there now by virtue of its great system configuration tools and streamlined installation. While Mandrake 8.2 has good configuration tools, it lacks the friendliness and wide scope of SuSE Linux.

Two features that caught my eye in this distro are:

1. Mandrake's utility for configuring Samba file sharing and browsing, and
2. Mandrake's font installer. Unattractive, out-of-the-box fonts typically plague Linux distributions, so a good font installer is a must. In tests, the Mandrake font utility was much easier to use than the KDE-based utilities that come with Red Hat and SuSE.

Overall, Mandrake 8.2 has taken some great steps. However, if you are looking for a replacement for Windows, SuSe 8.0 is a better option.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Linux yet.
I've been using Linux for about two years and Mandrake 8.2 is the best I've seen yet. Here is what you get with Mandrake 8.2.

Easy to setup with Mandrake's graphical installer drakx. Includes great packages such as cups print server, proftpd, postfix, Star Office 6, Real Player, kamera, chat, and scanner software.

You can choose from 11 desktops including Gnome and KDE. You get games, multimedia, development, and a large assortment of extra printer drivers, and special Mandrake configuration tools to get up and running pretty easy and painless.

I had Mandrake 8.2 installed in about 30 minutes, and it was near painless. It was the easiest install of any Linux distribution I have ever done.

So if you are sick of Windows, and are looking for something else try Mandrake 8.2. Even old Linux hands can enjoy 8.2.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but needs work
Linux in general has many awesome features, including efficient a high command line, great networking capabilities, security, and (in my opinion) the best file system (i.e., disk format) around. Being Linux, those are all here.

This distribution is designed to be user friendly, both in installation and everyday use, and it mostly lives up to that. Included are some form of all the most common program types for a home PC -- word processors, web browsers, mp3 players, etc. Further, the user interfaces have all been set up with a very attractive appearance. Unfortunately, some of the office software is lacking in feature that were added after this distro was release and is a little buggy.

However, there are some short commings. My biggest complaint is that the C/C++ compilers don't work out of the box -- I had to change several links by hand to gcc 3.x work, and I've never gotten gcc 2.96.x to work at all, and it still will not compile all programs. While compilers may not be desirable on production servers for security reasons, they may be needed on other systems. If you are a tinkerer / programmer, a student learning C++, or just want to compile software from trusted web-sites, be prepared for a fight. I never had this problem with Red Hat, and I think any software included should work as some as its installed. This is a major problem the guys at Mandrake Soft need to work on.

Likewise, the version of Java, though functional, is out dated, and should have been at release time, and is not even Sun Java but a thrid party version. It only good up to Java 1.2 so that many Java 2 features simply don't work.

Other than that, the only major problem has been printing. That always seems to be a difficult thing to set up in Linux. The Printerdrake program solves most of the problem, and makes the original setup easy -- I've done a lot of printing here. However, its also buggy and breaks easily -- I've lost my printing capabilities several times and getting them back has often been a major and stressful chore -- currently I have no printing and am now at a loss what to do. This may be a dangerour switch if printing is am important use for your PC. Note, though, that creating PDF files is very easy and does not require Acrobat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Customer support?
I've been running linux on my machines for several years, and mandrake is by far the best distribution that is available for those who are new to the linux experience.

A lot of these reviews complain about customer service. I, for one, have never even thought to call someone for help with linux. If you want customer service, then perhaps Linux isn't for you. There are billions of places on the internet to find the answers to your questions without calling some poor geek in California who just started learning the OS and asking him your obfuscated questions and expect to get a clear, concise, fix everything that's wrong with your installation response.

OK. that was a long sentence...my point is...Don't expect customer service, and don't bother those poor people. Get on the internet and search google for the answers to your woes. That's what Linux users do ;-) I've also always thought that http://krnlpanic.com was a good place for some common answers too

Happy Linux'ing!

Amazon.com Review

Windows 2000 Server provides the ease of administration, reliability, and scalability needed by any business. This edition is bundled with the new Internet Information Server (IIS) 5.0 and contains built-in support for up to four CPUs. With a wide variety of new server technologies and tools, this new OS raises the bar for powering applications with Intel hardware, both on and off the Web.

While Windows NT 4.0 certainly won points for ease of administration and a wide range of tools for Web applications, Windows 2000 marks a significant increase in reliability and performance. For one thing, Microsoft has worked hard to reduce the need to reboot this operating system, and with support for plug-and-play, you can change hardware and software settings while keeping your server online.

The technology behind Windows 2000 offers new integration of cutting-edge technologies for today's multitiered Web applications. Under Windows NT, various server-side features were spread out among different tools. Windows 2000 integrates transaction and resource management, message queuing, and distributed objects into its new COM+ standard. The powers of COM+ and the new emphasis on reliability and scalability add up to a Web platform you can entrust with more and more of your business.

Of course, ease of administration is still a strength. Windows 2000 offers both browser-based and stand-alone tools for simplifying Web, software, and hardware administration. A significant new technology here is the Active Directory standard (based in part on LDAP), which can simplify maintaining corporate directories. (For instance, phone numbers for your entire organization can now be stored in a single place.) With some planning, Windows 2000 is ready to reduce your administration TCO, with support for such features as pushing software installations to clients. New policy-based administration makes it a snap to manage accounts and security settings.

Whether you are new to Windows or upgrading from NT, Windows 2000 offers a truly compelling array of technologies and tools for getting more reliability and performance out of Windows and the Intel platform. It's a server-side solution that can do serious work for any business organization--for both its corporate intranet and Internet presence. --Richard Dragan ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As easy as Windows, and more powerful
Mandrake Linux installs effortlessly. When you need to install new sotfware onto your machine, this task is also effortless. I'm a first time linux user, and I was outright shocked at how easy the whole procedure was. People say, "sure, but Windows is easy, too." But, Windows crashes. Windows doesn't have a webserver right out of the box. Windows doesn't have enormous libraries of FREE software to install. Windows doesn't run fast on older machines. Linux does all these things and more, and the Mandrake team has put together the tools that make it easy enough for the average person to switch over with no hassle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Want to try linux? Then this is for you.
I'm a long time MS user (dos 2.? and up) and i finally decided i couldn't deal with another lackluster OS(XP). So i started researching Linux. Mandrake seemed to be getting great reviews for new users... and they were right.

The install only took me a half an hour and it detected all my hardware without a hitch. The only peice of hardware i own that wasn't linux friendly was a winmodem that came bundled with my Dell Dimension Desktop. But i've already found some online sources to help me with that problem (at the installers suggestion).

The OS comes fully loaded with an MS compatible office suit and all the tools i need to scan, edit photos, play multimedia, and burn cd's. I beleive the pro-suite boasts a full 7 CD's full of applications for whatever your heart desires. It has everything from internet chat programs (icq/aim/yahoo compatible) to applications for developing your own programs. The firewall is a big plus since i'm switching to a cable modem and i'll constantly be online. It has a bunch of window managers (gnome, kde, sawfish, etc.) and it even installed a graphical LILO that let's me choose which OS i want to run, since i'm still dual booting with Windows ME. But hopefully after i get my feet wet in the linux world, i will eventually be able to stop using that. Plus it's very multiuser friendly and supports true type fonts... the list just goes on and on and on.

I would definately recommend this product to any desktop users considering switching to linux. I've been blown away by this product, especially if your hardware can't keep up with the rigorous demands of XP... my 800mhz pc feels top of the line again when i'm running linux.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mandrake is the best distro for the Masses
Linux Mandrake is simply the easiest and best desktop linux solution that anyone can use. Mandrake provides cutting edge software and excellent support and community options. I highly recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply amazing!
If you are looking for a good, stable, alternative operating system, then Mandrake is for you! I installed it to dual boot with Windows XP Home Edition on my new Custom Compaq (P4 1.7GHz, 256MB Ram, Dual-20GB Drives, CD-RW) and everything worked without a hitch.

Well, thats not entirely true actually, seeing as I had a PCTEL Winmodem installed on the computer (it came with it) the modem was not properly recognized. However, it was a quick fix when I got a download from Jan's PCTEL Resources (PCTEL and more winmodem drivers available at www.linmodems.org)!

The included StarOffice, AbiWord, and KOffice are excellent Microsoft-Compatible office suties that I use every day. The games included are also very good and provide hours of time-wasting-fun! There is an excellent CD Ripping utility provided, Grip, and XMMS is one of the best media players out there (A clone of the popular WinAMP).

The distro (distribution) comes loaded with window managers and themes, which is wonderful! I personally use KDE 2.2.22, but it comes with Gnome, IceWM, Enlightenment, Black Box, and many more, so if you don't like the default theme, you can very easily switch at login!

I have my Mandrake Linux setup on a 4.65GB (and it only uses 2GB of it!) partition on my secondary drive and I kept Windows XP on its original partition of 17GB (the other partition on the drive is for Compaq OS restore files). I have LILO (Graphical) configured to load Windows XP as the default but with the touch of a button I can boot right into Linux, depending on what kind of a mood I am in!!!

Overall, Mandrake Linux 8.1 is the perfect alternative OS for everyone, in fact, I like it so much that I've been using it much more often than windows! In fact, I'm writing this review on it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Piece of cake!
As a long-time Red Hat user, I have to admit that Mandrake packs a strong punch. The installation process is the best I've seen: so easy to navigate and choose options, very predictable and generally humane. The default configuration is good. Gotta love those goofy penguin icons! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the virus formerly known as Windows 98
I bought the OEM version years ago with a hard drive. Super easy to install, nearly intuitive to run, and - most importantly - crashes went from at least two per week with W98 to less than semiannual with W2K, running on an Intel Seattle-PII350-256MB ECCSDRAM rig. I would never go back, but keep W98-2e on a crumbling old Thinkpad for obsolete equipment drivers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very solid distribution
Mandrake 7.0 was the first Linux distribution to recognize all of my hardware right out of the box. I've used all of the major distributions -- Mandrake since 6.0. Mandrake has really grown up in 7.0 and is no longer just "RedHat with features". I recommend this to anyone from a user new to Linux to an experience Linux user.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give it a try!
I found the Linux Mandrake to be a wonderful operating system even for the beginner. The installation was easier than Windows 98 and took half the time to install. The Mandrake comes loaded with hundreds of applications including Sun's Star Office which to me now is a must have. (I could write a whole other review about Star Office.) For the Linux newbee I would suggest to know what componets you have in your computer and cross reference them with the Mandrake web site to see if they are supported. Also read the documentation before you install and if you can afford it, give Linux its own hard drive. However if you don't have the luxuary of having a second hard drive, Linux Mandrake can prove to be a good neighbor with Windows. I would recommend this OS to anyone who is willing to learn and wants to try something new. I have tried other flavors of Linux and so far the Mandrake has proved to be my favorite.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful OS but needs work
Linux-Mandrake 7.0 is arcaic now, (Red Hat Linux 7.3 and Linux-Mandrake 8.2 are much better) I couldn't get on the internet with this version. Upside: 7.0 is fast on arcaic computers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Forget the techincal support
If you're buying this box for the support or buying support from Mandrake, then forget it. I couldn't even get the installation disk to boot (something to do with Mandrake having problems with a DVD ROM, despite the fact that every other Linux distribution disk I tried worked), and a request for support only led to a rather dense suggestion and then a referral of my problem to "level 3 support". The latter never responded, not once, not to say "your problem is progressing", not even a "your problem is too hard". Of course "level 3 support" is /dev/null.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible, Just Terrible.
I bought Linux with high exceptations, however when I got home and tried to install it took several hours and when I got to the X - Windows config screen in the DRAKX installer my system froze and would have to reinstall Lynux all over again. On the third time I got the config to work, but found myself at the UNIX command line. Having absolutly no experience with UNIX I was confused. After trying a few things about the only thing I could do was to log on and access a help file. Big Deal.

(ignore my earlier review.)
I found I had made a slight mis-configeration in the setup program, which is why I didn't work. Now of course Linux is my operating system and it is working quite nicely, The problem above was all human error and failure to read the instructions. After reading the manual I discovered what I did wrong and corrected it. ... Read more
