Whether you connect to the Internet by using a modem or network card,McAfee Firewall offers a safe and secure personal firewall for your personalcomputer. Designed to let you monitor all incoming and outgoing network trafficwith minimal fuss, this unobtrusive and simple-to-use utility can guarantee thesafety of your system, especially now that more users are connecting to theInternet around the clock with DSL and cable modems.

McAfee Firewall sits between your system and the Internet. After installation, you can answer a wizard-guided "interview" that configures your firewall'sbehavior, along with the programs that will be permitted to work on the Web.Better yet, as individual applications attempt to access the network, the McAfeeFirewall will prompt you without interrupting your normal work. After anordinary session of computer use, this utility had discovered our browser, mailclient, and FTP utility, and we weren't bothered with any more warningmessages.

Behind the scenes, McAfee Firewall logs every attempt at network access, savingthe last 100 messages. By using its console-like utility, you can view networkactivity for every program that's running currently. This application gives youfine-grained control of protocols besides basic TCP/IP, with such acronyms asARP, DCHP, ICMP, NetBIOS, RIP, and PPTP. Although you might not have heard ofthem, several of these protocols can be used in denial-of-service and otherkinds of attacks.

A handy online help page documents the well-known types of security threats.(Chances are that you'll be surprised at the variety of ways there are todisrupt your system.) Don't worry, however; by checking the "Log UnknownTraffic" option in McAfee Firewall and regularly reviewing your log, you candetect any suspicious activity. In all, this low-cost utility can deliver peaceof mind and solid security in an application that doesn't get in the way of youreveryday Web browsing. --Rich Dragan ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't use software you don't understand
I have purchased and used McAfee Firewall without any problems at all. I can install it, I can uninstall it, it hasn't caused any problems with any of the programs either I or my husband run (including, but not limited to, an HP scanner, digital camera, printer, nomad jukebox, MS office, chemdraw, adobe photoshop, illustrator, acrobat, etc.). I can access our email information through Arizona State University's IMAP system, a notoriously difficult task, as well as the library and other services available to graduate students, without a hitch. Bottom line is, you have to be able to configure options if you want to use McAfee. If you want something to install and not worry about, Norton is a better option; on the other hand, that means you usually can't configure their products for special use situations, such as school servers. McAfee is a great program because it allows the user to determine what it does and does not do. It allows the user to decide what should acess which inforamtion, and when. Of cousre, that means you need to know what it is saying when you get a notice, and you need to know how to configure it. If you want to be able to determine how much information goes to who, this is the program you want. If you want a blanket protection you don't have to mess around with ever, this is *not* for you. My only complaint is that I wish it were *more* technical in the information it presents in the alerts; I have to bend over backwards to find the technical details I want.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT LET IT NEAR YOUR PC
Had I only read the reviews here before buying the "Office Suite". I updated my Windows 2000 Pro notebook, and it did not even install. Next, I thought it would install on my wife's new Windows XP notebook. There, it screwed up something in the networking software and prohibits us from using the modem to access the Internet. Nobody has been able to help us fix this, and the McAfee support is virtually non-existent.
This is a trap: How much time (=money) is it worth to you to deal with these people and install and uninstall and fix their software's problems?

1-0 out of 5 stars The user reviews tell a story...
I just wish I had read the reviews before installing this product.

I installed this product when I realised that my DSL connection had to a number of trojan horses on my system and a slew of hacker attacks. I downloaded a 'free' 30-days trial version and installed this. I had a tough time having it installed properly to work with my DSL....and THEN the nightmares began.

A few days into the trial, annoying pop-up windows start appearing every so often asking if you'd want to purchase it! (Why the hell do you call it a "30-day" evaluation??). It irritated me so much that I decided to uninstall the program. And I did the "mistake" of using the Windows 'Add/Remove Program" to install this. That screwed up my Network and Dial up connections, got all kinds of winsock error. I'm still stuck and now I'm told I'll have to uninstall and re-install the network drivers.

Just don't buy (or even try) this product!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Impossible to Uninstall!
I must agree with everyone else. I got this program with Mcafee Office 2000. It is impossible to Uninstall this program properly. There is no Uninstall_cpd file at all. If I remove it through Windows control panel, it screws up my network connection and I must reinstall Windows to get it back. I am about to go through this again for the last time. I am throwing the whole Office Suite in the trash!

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware!
My wife bought this program because she wanted to protect our computer from Hacker attacks since we added a cable modem, which, along with its high-speed access, has an "always on" two-way link to the Internet that makes our computer vulnerable to such attacks. And on that front, it appears to have done its job. At least, we don't seem to have had any hacker attacks. But that's where the benefits end and the nightmares begin. You see, my wife also wanted to access her office Outlook e-mail from home, and it would not work on our computer. Her Techie at work told her it was probably the Firewall, and said she should turn it off. Turning off all filtering did not do the trick, so we tried to uninstall the application. No dice. The incorrectly named "Help" file said there should be a file labeled "uninstall CPD" in the program folder. No such file could be found. Their online support said their should be an uninstall Firewall option under the start menu, but it was not there. On top of that, the Help file warned that we should not use Windows' Remove Programs feature to uninstall because it could damage our system! Ultimately what we have then is a program that was designed to protect our system that has instead gummed up the works, and prevented our computer from doing something very basic and important, like reading office email at home! What's worse, because there is no uninstall function, and remove programs doesn't work (I ultimately tried it, fingers crossed), I feel like my computer has been taken hostage by McAfee! On top of all that, their customer service is a joke. In addition to the laughable help file, their web page is extremely confusing (just try and find the answer to my uninstall program problem, or even how to email Tech support!) AND you have to pay a fee for phone support, EVEN THOUGH IT'S THEIR OWN PRODUCT's FAULT!!

As you can see, I am frustrated. The irony in all of this is that McAfee sells another program called McAfee Uninstaller. I laughed a gloomy laugh when I saw that on their web site. Could it be that this program is designed to FORCE you to buy their other program to get rid of it?

Who knows, maybe tech support will finally get back to me with a solution, or maybe I will have reinstalled Windows by then, I don't know.

Bottom line: AVOID THIS PRODUCT. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Useful Reason To Start Using Linux
For beginning Linux users, this firewall lets you make use of Linux ASAP. Because it has the RedHat distribution, there are plenty of useful resources to draw from. As you learn more by digging into the console or xwindows (bypassing the Web interface), you'll find the full powered, multy-usage Linux OS. In other words, this product lets you build, without it becoming obsolete too soon. Having some experience with firewalls on NT, I found the Netmax stuff wasn't too difficult to conquer. Customer support has been good so-far. I'm itching to try the Webserver too! Good product for a Linux newbie. Only drawback: a couple bugs which should not be.

2-0 out of 5 stars For new netadmins only
Netmax Firewall is fine if you are a new network administrator (allowing it to protect you from your own worst enemy: yourself), or if your boss feels better with something in a box that says "Firewall" on it. And it's definitely way too much for home users who don't have a dedicated firewall server.

There's a nice-looking but sometimes confusing web interface that lets you configure NAT (Network Address Translation) with one or more ethernet cards, and configure the firewall too. It can also let you monitor what your LAN users are doing, what websites they are visiting.

But Netmax's simplicity becomes its worst feature as you start to learn more about network administration. In the end, you find out that you could just as easily have used RedHat and ipchains and gained more versatility, and then ftp'd some network monitoring tools if you want to watch how your users are using your net connection.

In the end, Netmax becomes just a "more expensive than RedHat" RedHat distribution. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Norton Internet Security 2001 3.0 contains three of Norton's renowned security software tools: Firewall, AntiVirus, and Privacy Control.

Norton Personal Firewall (NPF) 2001 is a hybrid package, combining firewall functionality with privacy controls, running under Windows 95, 98, 2000, and Me, as well as NT Workstation 4.0. At its heart, NPF is a rules-based interactive "learning" firewall, supporting both inbound and outbound filtering. The firewall itself will block ActiveX controls and Java applets, as well as more basic TCP/IP attacks, and has special built-in rules designed to block hack attacks from notorious programs such as the BackOrifice Trojan, or other intrusive spyware.

The big problem with firewalls is their unbelievable complexity--configuring one makes rocket science look easy. However, Symantec has gone a long way toward hiding all the complexities of a firewall behind a simple front end: users can simply choose between low, medium, or high levels of protection. But if you do want to tweak, you can still drill down to fine-tune NPF's security configuration. If you spend a lot of time online, sooner or later you'll need firewall protection and Norton Personal Firewall is arguably the best on the market.

Competition between antivirus software vendors is particularly fierce but many publications rate Norton AntiVirus as one of the best. The best is even better with Norton AntiVirus 2001, which incorporates a number of significant new features and improvements, both in the accuracy of its detection capabilities and in its usability. The new SmartScan virus scanning engine, for example, is faster than its predecessor, though it can still take its time: tested on a P200 notebook it took 23 minutes to scan some 21,000 files. This sort of job can be scheduled to take place during the night, and time isn't a problem.By default, Norton AntiVirus is configured aggressively, with nearly all the scanning options enabled. For example, it has heuristics turned on by default and its manual scanner checks every file, not just files with specific extensions. Though these settings may increase the performance hit, they also provide more reliable protection. You can easily configure the program to scan only specific types of files, but most users are better served by trading off some performance for such thorough protection.

The key to successful virus detection is keeping your virus definition files up-to-date, hence the much appreciated revamping of the old LiveUpdate (LU) feature. Not only are update files much smaller in size, but LiveUpdate will automatically update all the Norton products installed on your PC in one go. If you have a permanent Internet connection, you can configure LU to update automatically, in the background. It can also be set to update whenever you're online. There's now a worldwide network of LU servers, so updating should also be faster and smoother. And if the worst happens and you can't boot your PC because of a virus infection, you can actually boot from the Norton AntiVirus CD-ROM and clean it up from there--a neat trick.

Despite Norton AntiVirus 2001's lengthy scan time and mild system performance hit, it provides just about the easiest and most thorough virus protection on the market. Combine that with superior firewall functionality and privacy control, and you get a product that provides solid defense against even the most threatening intruders. --Roger Gann ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One in a million!
NIS 2001 3.0 is probably the best edition I've seen. It has an easy user interface and it has protected from countless viruses. It also helps me prevent hungry neophyte port probing teenagers with bad attitudes. It is definitely a must have for /Kazaa users. If you plan on getting a security program for your home pc, make this the one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Cable Modems.
I have been using Norton internet security version 3.0 for the past three months. The program consists of three main software applications: a firewall protection, protecting confidential information, and internet security.
It took me an hour to configure the software due to various applications accessing the internet. But once I was able to set the software I have been able to keep various intruders from my computer.
This software has tools that safeguard your information not only from the internet but also from yourself.I especially like the firewall since it enables me to choose the ports. Also the automatic updates help keep the software up to date.Another good item that I found was the set-up with your corporate VPN.
I gave the software four stars because the user interface is not comfortable.

Have fun keeping people out of your computer.

5-0 out of 5 stars NIS is for the average consumer
I like NIS very much.Though I love Black Ice also, I have
NIS running on several of the PCs I use because I like the idea of having virus protection and firewall/network security in
the same package. It is becoming easier and easier to configure, and I believe that it has gottento the place where the average consumer can deal with it well.If you are a real dunce about computers you may want to get the help of a friend
when you install it, just so that you feel more confident, but this product is steadily improving.

4-0 out of 5 stars Trouble with Windows ME
Well, let's see... I've been a major Norton software fan since the late 60's... okay at least since I bought my 286 many years ago. Now I have a 1.4GHz Pentium III running Windows ME, and I'm getting errors and lockups all over the place. I don't think I should blame Norton for this one as I think it's an "ME" issue, but turning off Norton often solves the problems. So, my advice? If you've got Windows ME, don't mix it with Norton Internet Security 2001.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great, if you like Blue screens
Complaints about "unexpected kernal mode trap" error are unresolved. Run both programs and watch the blue screens arrive. Check out their site for this error report from others. There solution is there is no solution and has not been one for about six months now. Also there support must have blue screen problems, they don't reply. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Symantec's Norton Internet Security 2003 Professional Edition protects you and your business from online threats. This powerful suite keeps your PC safe from viruses and hackers with full versions of Norton AntiVirus Professional Edition and Norton Personal Firewall. You also get advanced utilities to safeguard your privacy and let you use the Internet more efficiently.

Norton Internet Security's 24-hour protection provides vital Internet security for dialup, DSL, and cable modem users. Ad blocking now stops even more banner ads, pop-up windows, pop-under windows, and other Web distractions. The new Web Cleanup feature deletes unneeded files left over from Internet sessions, while Connection Keep Alive helps prevent dialup Internet sessions from being interrupted.

Norton AntiVirus 2003 scans and cleans both incoming and outgoing e-mail, stopping viruses from infecting your computer or spreading to other computers. It removes viruses automatically, without interrupting your work. To prevent infections during real-time online chats, Norton AntiVirus now also detects viruses in instant-message attachments, including attachments you receive using MSN, Windows, AOL, and Yahoo! messaging services.

Norton Personal Firewall 2003 keeps hackers out and personal data in. Its robust defenses include intrusion detection, application control, and privacy protection--all in one easy-to-use program. Right out of the box, Norton Personal Firewall hides your PC on the Internet to keep hackers from seeing it. That action alone can prevent many attacks. In addition, Symantec's exclusive Norton Intrusion Detection feature thoroughly examines incoming Internet traffic and automatically blocks suspicious activities. Hackers also try to conduct malicious activity from within your PC, so Norton's Internet Access Control is included to stop spyware and Trojan horse programs masquerading as legitimate Internet applications on your PC from connecting to the Internet.

Norton Privacy Control prevents confidential information from being sent out without your knowledge, while Norton Spam Alert helps you keep junk mail out of your inbox by checking e-mail coming in via popular POP3 clients such as Microsoft Outlook Express, Eudora, and Netscape Messenger.
