Amazon.com Review

If you want to secure your Mac from unwanted intruders without having toknow anything about firewalls, then Norton Personal Firewall 2001 is for you.Home users, particularly those with always-on Internet access such as ADSL, willfind this security package both simple to use and highly effective.

The most impressive feature of Norton Personal Firewall 2001 is its simplicity.Once you run the software installer and restart your Mac, you are protected fromall forms of unauthorized access from the Internet, and that's practically allthere is to it. In its default configuration, the firewall blocks all access toyour Mac by File Sharing over TCP/IP, Program Linking over TCP/IP, Web Sharing, and All Others. We found that setting all of these access types to Deny AllAccess caused some minor problems with services such as anonymous ftp. However, temporarily disabling Norton Personal Firewall 2001 only requires a single clickon the firewall control strip module. In addition, with the advanced preferencesin Norton Personal Firewall 2001 you can either list specific IP addresses, which are allowed access to your Mac, or list the IP addresses, which may nothave access.

Using Norton Personal Firewall 2001 for the first time, it is surprising to seejust how many attempts are made to access your computer without your permissionduring an average session on the Net. With Norton Personal Firewall 2001 inplace, you can be sure that nobody will get through without your knowledge.--Daniel Jardine ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars NPF Protects Your PowerMac
Once you have the set-up and preferences adjusted for Norton Personal Firewall 1.0, this software works quite well for PowerMacs, including PowerBooks, iMacs, iBooks, and Blue & White Macs with G3 and G4 hardware. However, if you are running Mac OS 9.1, there are some technical problems that you might encounter. Norton includes a written manual with this software, which is somewhat helpful.

There are still some Macintosh software application compatibility issues with NPF, especially with Mac OS 9.1. The "Temporarily disable Firewall protection" feature, which one may access by means of the Control Strip, is a great workaround if you cannot get Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, American Online, or instant messaging applications (for example) to open. You can set this feature for any amount of time, such as for one or two minutes, and then these applications should load fine. By checking the access history log, you can then use the set-up feature to allow certain IP adresses to have access in the future.

NPF access history logs all allowed and denied access attempts to your computer. You can save this log, and it would come in handy for documentation purposes of any unauthorized access. There is a self-test feature so you can make sure the firewall is working with your configurations and settings.

Firewall protection is now necessary for even the casual Mac user of the Internet because without a firewall someone could gain access to your computer. DSL and cable modem users also need this protection. As well, you can configure any IP addresses into the setup if you are doing any websharing or if you are on a LAN. When combined with NAV 7.0, you can feel more secure about using any online services or filesharing.

At this time, NPF 1.0 is not compatible with the Mac OS X system. An upgrade of NPF for OS X users is expected during the summer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Security for the rest of us!
You can either build a software firewall, or rebuild an old computer to make one. For those of us without that kind of time, Symantec has come up with a low cost solution that works... Personal Firewall.

Easy to install, and easier to use. Once you restart, you're fully protected. Plus, you can adjust the settings to suit your needs. No programming. No building. And a nice, small manual. (We all know Mac people hate manuals... that's why we're Mac people!) If you're using a DSL or Cable connection, you should have a Firewall. If you're on a network, you should have a Firewall. If you're on the web at all, you should have a Firewall.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a good choice for the Norton user.
I found this product easy to install. After installation a handy enable/disable icon appears on your control strip. You are allowed some customizing of operation and a log of access attempts is kept. Of course this product integrates well with other Symantec products (ie. SystemWorks). Overall if you are a home user running other Norton software this probably is the way to go. If you want a stand alone product it might be worth making a comparrison with Open Door Networks "Door Stop". ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Symantec's Norton Internet Security 2003 Professional Edition protects you and your business from online threats. This powerful suite keeps your PC safe from viruses and hackers with full versions of Norton AntiVirus Professional Edition and Norton Personal Firewall. You also get advanced utilities to safeguard your privacy and let you use the Internet more efficiently.

Norton Internet Security's 24-hour protection provides vital Internet security for dialup, DSL, and cable modem users. Ad blocking now stops even more banner ads, pop-up windows, pop-under windows, and other Web distractions. The new Web Cleanup feature deletes unneeded files left over from Internet sessions, while Connection Keep Alive helps prevent dialup Internet sessions from being interrupted.

Norton AntiVirus 2003 scans and cleans both incoming and outgoing e-mail, stopping viruses from infecting your computer or spreading to other computers. It removes viruses automatically, without interrupting your work. To prevent infections during real-time online chats, Norton AntiVirus now also detects viruses in instant-message attachments, including attachments you receive using MSN, Windows, AOL, and Yahoo! messaging services.

Norton Personal Firewall 2003 keeps hackers out and personal data in. Its robust defenses include intrusion detection, application control, and privacy protection--all in one easy-to-use program. Right out of the box, Norton Personal Firewall hides your PC on the Internet to keep hackers from seeing it. That action alone can prevent many attacks. In addition, Symantec's exclusive Norton Intrusion Detection feature thoroughly examines incoming Internet traffic and automatically blocks suspicious activities. Hackers also try to conduct malicious activity from within your PC, so Norton's Internet Access Control is included to stop spyware and Trojan horse programs masquerading as legitimate Internet applications on your PC from connecting to the Internet.

Norton Privacy Control prevents confidential information from being sent out without your knowledge, while Norton Spam Alert helps you keep junk mail out of your inbox by checking e-mail coming in via popular POP3 clients such as Microsoft Outlook Express, Eudora, and Netscape Messenger. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I using NIS w/o problem
Personal Firewall is a must have software (like Anti-virus) for today computer user. I using NIS in my PIII 750MHz Sony notebook w/ Win2K O/S, and Norton System Works 2003. I consider it as an upgrade from Norton Personal Firewall 2002 and everything is fine.
Installation process is smooth too, but the program can detect if McAfee's product (mine is VirusScan 7.0 installed) was installed. It will "warn" you to uninstall McAfee before going on. (I installed it anyway but ok) I don't use any software if it installation having problem at the first of the beginning to avoid trouble (like McAfee personal firewall at my another P4 2.4GHz + Win XP desktop, it screw up my home network setup too).
I didn't turn on the "Parental control" function, so no comment on this. I didn't configured the Spam Alert too... (I think I should but just too busy). Ad blocking is functioning, I guess... I don't visit such kind of websites much through...
The rest is just the same old wine as PFW, upgrade it from version 2002 to 2003 just because I feel the info & programs are more update...and price is right. If you have PFW 2002 installed and satisfy then no need to hurry for this, hope 2004 version have something excite.
Again I dislike the rebate "service" from Norton as I stated at the other reviews. Other stores / vendors' rebate handling already have improvement and do the right job...
I give this product 4 stars because :
1. McAfee Personal Firewall give me hard time, but Norton didn't.
2. Beside this 2 companies I hardly think of anyone will provide me a complete integrated utilities to use (Anti-virus + Personal Firewall + System Utilities). Many offer some but not all so simply limited choice. Using different vendors programs means expose ourself (users) in such a potential of incompatiable software issues that nobody will help us.
Also, add a router (they are so cheap today!!!) if you using boardband for internet access even you have only one computer. This will give you some hardware protection for additional safety.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good program, but don't skip the tutorial
I purchased 2003 in 2003. I tried to install it without removing all the programs from the 2002 version. I used the uninstall program, but Symantec made a change that wasn't in the manual that requires you to remove all previous version programs before installing 2003. I didn't read the tutorial that tells you of the change. It also tells you that you need Explorer 5.5 or higher. I was using Explorer 5 and later updated to Explorer 6. The first installation didn't work, but one-year later after I read the tutorial and made the Explorer upgrade it worked. I am using Windows 98se operating system. What prompted me to try again the second time was that the 2002 version I was using refused to allow me to use the firewall after a online update. It works great but the set-up instructions are difficult to follow. If I didn't have previous experience with the earlier version I would have had big problems. Symantec's support is hard to obtain on-line and you have to pay big bucks to get telephone support. Once you set it up properly it works great.

5-0 out of 5 stars No problem here
I have been using Norton Internet Security 2003 for just under a year now, I have had no problems what so ever. The fire wall has caught numerous problems in the past and I have had no ill effects on my internet access. It has caught numerous virus attacks via websites and email. With virus protection so critical now, I don't see any better product on the market. I liked it so much, I bought it for my wife's business.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mediasales2000
Just wanted to warn people not to buy from mediasales2000. I ordered a Norton Internet Security 2003 from them. Never got the CD. Wanted Norton Internet Security 2003 because heard there were problems with Norton Internet Security 2004. Got new computer with Antivirus on it. Think Norton is still good product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works beautifully on XP
My husband and I are both running Norton Internet Security 2003 on XP systems and neither of us has had any problem with it. When you first install this software, it guides you through the process to set it up the way you want it. You can easily reconfigure its many different features later if you change your mind. NIS warns you when something is accessing the internet, an excellent feature especially if you are always connected with a broadband service. It also alerts you if there is a potential attack on your computer and automatically blocks the attack. If there is an attack on your computer, it gives you details about the type of attack and the ISP# where the attack originated so that you can follow up if necessary.

Other features I like include ad blocking (you can block pop ups as well as many banner ads) and parental controls. Also, you can tell Norton about important information you may keep on your computer, such as credit card numbers and account information, that you want Norton to protect and not allow to be sent out. This comes with the antivirus software, also, so your computer is well protected.

Also, you can set Norton to auto update your antivirus and internet security features so that you are always best protected or you can choose to do it manually. The firewall is also easy to configure to your own liking. This software is pretty flexible and does a good job protecting my computers without having any difficulties with the XP operating system. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

In the good old days of computing--i.e., the early '90s--the only fearsthe average user had from hacker attacks were viruses passed from PC to PC viafloppy disks like a traditional cold. Now, with everyone hacking and coughing inthe same giant room of the World Wide Web, your system's become vulnerable toTrojan Horse attacks, back-door affronts, and the same plain old viruses thatare now much easier to catch.

So it's a good idea--especially if you have an always-on connection, such ascable access or DSL--to provide yourself with some protection. That's where Network ICE's BlackICE Defender comes in. This personal firewall, now in version2.1, is relatively inexpensive, easy to configure, and unobtrusive to your dailyuse. And, if you really want to find out who's after you, BlackICE contains thetools to allow you to attempt to trace your intruders back to the source.

Setup takes only a few minutes and then it's up and running at a default levelof protection, Cautious (it goes up to Nervous and then Paranoid, but the highersettings could interfere with your normal Web or home network activities). Youcan leave it alone, and it will record any attempts to probe or connect to yoursystem as well as alert you when the attempts occur. A visit to the Shield's UP!page at Gibson Research Corporation (www.grc.com), which simulates varioushacker attacks, showed that Cautious was more than enough to ward off evenstrong attempts to infiltrate.

Earlier versions of BlackICE met with complaints about thedifficult-to-understand interface. While 2.1 still contains some technical terms, it alsouses the advICE feature to open a Web site that explains each type of hackattempt, from innocent attempts to connect to a standard HTTP server to morecoercive SubSeven Trojan Horse attacks.

Unlike a lot of other firewalls, BlackICE keeps track of any information it canglean from intruders and stores it, allowing you to report serious offenders toyour ISP. You can also block or trust specific intruders, so you won't bebothered by other networked PCs that you know should have access to yoursystem.

While BlackICE isn't as easy to use as some other firewalls, it's much easierthan it used to be and it offers much more powerful tools for those users whowant to fight back against hackers. --J. Curtis ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DSL or Dial-up. Buy this puppy! It won't cause crashes!
I bought Black Ice Defender. I loaded Black Ice Defender in minutes. Black Ice Defender has run flawlessly on my system for many months. Why am I suggesting you buy it? Because I thought I was blowing my money, because I connect to the Internet using a slow Dial-Up account through Earthlink. I incorrectly thought that only DSL and Cable modems were prone to hackers' prying eyes - well I was wrong. Black Ice runs from the system tray. I disabled the audible tone so the icon flashes one of several meaningful security codes to signal anything from a minor concern to a major hacking attempt. I was astonished to find people trying to hack me the very first hour that I installed it! Talk about feeling violated!...Spend the [money]. Let Black Ice defend the information you have on your system. It has never once caused a crash or a slow down.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for dummies.
I've been a user of BlackICE Defender for quite some time now. I've used it for many network sercutiry jobs, and businesses in the past. In true tests I've proven to different companies the vulnerabilities of BlackICE vs. the competition.

One of the problems is that if you plan on buying this product and you belive you can just throw it onto your HDD, you will come up short with your home/office network. This product takes a bit of configuring with different ports and IP addresses. Once you've done all of this though, you have yourself a VERY good product that will not only block exploit from being run on your computer, it will simply terminate them and erase them in the progress due to it's application protection option.

BlackICE is worth every penny....if you know what you're doing with it.

1-0 out of 5 stars No Support
This product is worthless. It says plainly on their website that they offer NO phone support. That is danger number one. It locked up my computer all four times I tried to install it. I was unable to boot. It is hard to get web support when your computer will not boot. Avoid this software.

2-0 out of 5 stars RUN, HIDE, BUY SOMETHING ELSE
This is a case of tampering with a great product, and fouling it up.

The original Black Ice was wonderful. It operated quietly in the background, keeping bad guys at bay. Then they "upgraded it". They made it obtrusive and a nag, interrupting all normal computer use with nagging messages and questions. The problem is, if you set it at the highest security questions, you get nagging messages at every turn. Even if you want to open a game, offline, with broadband disconnected, you get a Black Ice pop-up.

To decrease the interruptions, you have to lower the level of security. Not a good trade-off.

Then the other day, it just went crazy and seized control of my computer, basically locking me out. No matter what I wanted to do, it shut me down. Kind of like the Matrix. I finally had to reboot and restart in safe mode to uninstall Black Ice. I've gone out and bought a new firewall program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great
As for the person with AOL, Black Ice shouldn't run with AOL. After all, AOL is constantly selling your info. anyway. Only YOU can stop that problem. I have been using Black Ice Defender for over two years now. I think this is the best firewall out there other than using a router to block ports. I have never been hacked and my PC runs 24/7. It is really easy to use and gives detailed info. on the attacks on your computer. The software even describes what the attacker is attempting to do! I highly recommend this software. It will prove to be a highly effective tool in keeping unwanted visitors out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Firewall / Proxy
Great security product from Microsoft. And it's also good web caching software.

Wizards make installation straight-forward. Lots of options that can be configured. The software can operate as either a Firewall or as Web Cache or both.

If you want to setup a VPN, there is a wizard that makes it a snap. Incredibly simple.

Requires Windows 2000 service pack 1 before installing. If you're running MS Proxy 2.0, this will import your previous settings.

Packet filtering options are great. Can configure certain events to send email, or simply log to the Win2000 Event log.

Can configure SMTP so that arriving email that contains specific types of attachments are rejected or delayed (for inspection). (For example, any email containing ".exe" or ".vbs" can be stopped.) Also, email from certain addresses or domains can be rejected. These SMTP filters may not be possible however if you install ISA Server on the same machine that runs MS Exchange. I haven't figured that one out for certain yet. I remember getting a warning message that if the SMTP filter is enabled, something regarding Exchange RPC ... ? ...

Lots of good features ! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Be aware of the lack of support
The software was working great until I could not update or delete found viruses. I had few problems installing the software on my new computer. I contacted live support few times and they would rather communicate by e-mails. I found their support department lacking the knowledge and patience. I still can not install the software. Be aware of the limited hours for live support.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Product - Works well.
This has kept my PC clean and free!!! It's caught several virus's coming in EMAIL attachments. Real-Time scan is quick and doesn't interfere with with ongoing work. I did have trouble when TREND Micro changed their scan engine at one point - they never notified me and I was unable to get pattern file updates until I went through a small procedure. It was no big deal but they should have notified me that they wer changing things. Also, the personal firewall stopped working (crashed) on NT 4.0.

After disabling it, the system was back to normal. Overall, I think Trend Micro puts out a good product - better than all other other choices out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars overall, a great antivirus program
I've tried norton systemworks and internet security 2003 not so long ago. I didn't have any troubles with it EXCEPT that it slows my computer down. Too much hard disk activity. I don't know but maybe most people don't have this problem with norton. I have an athlon 1900+ with 512mb 333mhz ddr.The slowdown really bothers me especially because i like to play games a lot so it requires that my computer be in top shape. When I used the trial version of pc-cillin, i didn't notice any slow down at all, unlike norton. I was satisfied. Updating was easy but so is norton's.
About the virus detection? Well the manual scan scans fast and the real-time scanner caught viruses that were attached to files i was downloading in kazaa. It caught the virus even though the file it was attached to was still being downloaded. When I was using norton, I didn't have any viruses for a long time. But I think that's when you should be at least concerned: when your antivirus doesn't seem to be detecting viruses for a while. Maybe you really don't have viruses at all but then again maybe your virus scanner isn't doing its job. PC-Cillin detected viruses and thats how I know it works.
A little personal downside of PC-Cillin is that I used to have some tiny joke programs that flips the screen upside down, insults the user or even opens the cdrom tray. I didn't know they were viruses until I used pccillin(norton didn't detect these programs as viruses). I looked at pccillins virus encyclopedia online and found out that that my joke programs were actually viruses, although harmless. Too bad now I can't use these little programs anymore without actually disabling PC Cillin. I dont want to disable pccillin because then you'll be unsafe from viruses.

I'd give this program 4.5 stars but it rounds off to 5. Damnit

4-0 out of 5 stars Know what you're doing!
I bought PC-cillin 2003 largely based on the glowing reviews on this site.I had used Norton on Windows 2000 for almost 2 years but had recently upgraded to Windows XP and after reading the reviews of the latest Norton on this site I got scared off.

PC-cillin was shipped very quickly. My initial installation on Windows XP had a problem with running Update and generated a cryptic error code. I couldn't find any documentation about this error code. I assumed that I had to reboot (is this true?) and after I rebooted I got the same error. However, magically the product then started to connect and update without any intervention!! So you can imagine how pleased I was to be up and running.

Soon, however, when I used Windows Explorer to go to my downloads directory my machine froze with CPU at 99%.I killed Explorer and tried again - same thing!Well, since I knew it had to be PC-cillin because this had never happened before, I started to think about why this was happening. Then, while poking around in the configuration screens it occurred to me that my downloads directory contains a number of very large ZIP files. So I figured out that PC-cillin was opening up every ZIP file and then checking each file for viruses! So I used the configuration tools to disable checking of ZIP files and rebooted again. This worked! Now I am up and running and the product already caught 3 viruses trying to come in through Eudora mail.

The lesson learned is you have to be persistent and understand the principals behind the virus checking. That way, if you get a severe problem you at least have a clue what to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great program - trouble with rebate
This program is terrific.Works seamlessly.

However, Amazon didn't include the all important PROOF-OF-PURCHASE seal in it's packaging. As such, I was rejected for the rebate until I called Trend-Micro.After finally talking with a very polite supervisor, he issued the rebate with no question. ...

Amazon.com Review

A firewall is a program designed to protect Internet-connected PCs from hacker attacks, and users of vulnerable PCs should invest in a good one. By a good one, we don't mean McAfee Firewall 3.0. There's a fine security program somewhere in this package, but it's buried deep beneath this utility's technical issues, a horrific tech support conundrum, and the embarrassing and wholly unprofessional errors in its documentation.

We tested McAfee Firewall in two configurations. The first consisted of a single Windows 98 SE computer connected directly to a cable modem. For the other, we installed McAfee Firewall on a Windows Me PC that served as an Internet-sharing gateway for a network of five computers, enabling them to access the Internet via a single cable modem connection.

The former installation went well. McAfee Firewall 3.0 installed uneventfully, detected the Internet connection, and prompted us to configure it to allow filtered Internet access to various programs. The latter, a more sophisticated setting, utterly baffled McAfee Firewall. It generated errors immediately when first activated and permanently blocked Internet access for the entire network.

Network Associates' technical support line urged us to visit a free Web site. Since our Internet connection was broken, we checked out the phone support options. They were available--via a 900 number with a $2.95 per minute charge. We can understand the need for Network Associates (and, in all fairness, its competitors) to charge for support time, but in a case where the Web site is inaccessible due to a company's own product, the company should provide an alternative.

We used our press credentials to get some answers, and Network Associates assured us that the errors we encountered were very rare. However, the representative couldn't appease our concerns with the tech support catch-22, nor could she assure us of a timely solution to another problem: parts of both the online and physical documentation were bewilderingly cobbled from earlier versions of McAfee Firewall, which had a different interface from Firewall 3.0. The docs refer to menus and dialogs that don't exist in this version, making them effectively useless. That's unforgivable in the case of such a complex, dynamically configurable product.

When it works, McAfee Firewall 3.0 is a secure shield between your PC and the Net at large. It passed the most stringent security tests at Steve Gibson's Web site (www.grc.com) without a hiccup. Getting to that point wasn't worth the hassle, though; until Network Associates irons out the kinks, we strongly suggest using a superior, proven firewall such as Norton Firewall or Zone Labs ZoneAlarm. --Joel Durham, Jr. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!
My wife bought version 2.1 of this horrid program because she wanted to protect our computer from Hacker attacks since we added a cable modem, which, along with its high-speed access, has an "always on" two-way link to the Internet that makes our computer vulnerable to such attacks. And on that front, it appears to have done its job. At least, we don't seem to have had any hacker attacks. But that's where the benefits end and the nightmares begin. You see, my wife also wanted to access her office Outlook e-mail from home, and it would not work on our computer. Her Techie at work told her it was probably the Firewall, and said she should turn it off. Turning off all filtering did not do the trick, so we tried to uninstall the application. No dice. The incorrectly named "Help" file said there should be a file labeled "uninstall CPD" in the program folder. No such file could be found. Their online support said their should be an uninstall Firewall option under the start menu, but it was not there. On top of that, the Help file warned that we should not use Windows' Remove Programs feature to uninstall because it could damage our system! Ultimately what we have then is a program that was designed to protect our system that has instead gummed up the works, and prevented our computer from doing something very basic and important, like reading office email at home! What's worse, because there is no uninstall function, and remove programs doesn't work (I ultimately tried it, fingers crossed), I feel like my computer has been taken hostage by McAfee! On top of all that, their customer service is a joke. In addition to the laughable help file, their web page is extremely confusing (just try and find the answer to my uninstall program problem, or even how to email Tech support!) AND you have to pay a fee for phone support, EVEN THOUGH IT'S THEIR OWN PRODUCT's FAULT!!

As you can see, I am frustrated. The irony in all of this is that McAfee sells another program called McAfee Uninstaller. I laughed a gloomy laugh when I saw that on their web site. Could it be that this program is designed to FORCE you to buy their other program to get rid of it?

Who knows, maybe tech support will finally get back to me with a solution, or maybe I will have reinstalled Windows by then, I don't know.

Bottom line: AVOID THIS PRODUCT. ... Read more
